«The Tethered» umfasst 48 Kreise in Anlehnung an die Gründung Israels im Jahre 1948. Intime Momente des Krieges – ikonische, kollektive genauso wie persönliche – werden durch Wiederholung und Gegenüberstellung präsentiert. Aus 12 Jahren ihrer persönlichen Video-Dokumentation extrahiert Alshaibis Video Elemente aus den vertrauten «News» – der plumpen Darstellung bedeutungsloser Konflikte – und entwickelt daraus ein Werk des Widerstandes. «The Tethered» untersucht das Gewöhnliche und Aussergewöhnliche im alltäglichen Leben der Palästinenser in den besetzten Gebieten und im historischen Palästina genauso wie die israelischen Besatzertruppen in ihrem Kampf um Macht und Kontrolle. Die Installation orchestriert eine humanistische Neubewertung der oft ignorierten und marginalisierten Not des palästinensischen Volkes.
«The Tethered» consists of 48 circles, a nod to the birth of Israel in 1948. Intimate moments of war are visually captured and presented through repetition and juxtaposition – struggles of the iconic, the collective, and the personal. Based on 12 years of her own personal video documentation, Alshaibi’s video extracts components from familiar «news» – the crude depiction of meaningless conflict – turning them into a work of resistance. «The Tethered» re-examines the ordinary and extraordinary daily life of Palestinians living in the Occupied Territories and historical Palestine, as well as the Israeli occupying forces in their fight for power and control. The installation orchestrates a humanistic reconsideration of the often ignored and marginalised plight of the Palestinian people.
Ein italienisches Städtchen liegt auf einem scheinbar weit entfernten Hügel gleich einem architektonischen Modell vor uns. Klänge suggerieren plötzlich Nähe und nehmen uns das Gefühl der Distanz. Orte und Handlungen erscheinen in Miniatur und werden animiert vom An- und Abschalten des Lichts im Raum. Das Pfeifen des Windes und die Geräusche des Städtchens heben sich, während eine dem Gesange entzogene Arie durch Licht und Landschaft hallt.
Sama Alshaibi Sama Alshaibis (Palästina/Irak) Werke wurden weltweit ausgestellt, so etwa an der 55. Biennale in Venedig, an der Honolulu Biennial, im Museum of Modern Art in New York, am Arab World Institute in Paris, am Instants Video Festival sowie am Thessaloniki Film Festival. Ihre Monographie «Sand Rushes In» wurde 2015 von der Aperture Foundation publiziert, zudem erhielt sie 2014/15 das «Fulbright Scholars Fellowship to Palestine». Sama Alshaibi wird von der Ayyam Gallery vertreten und hat eine ausserordentliche Professur für Fotografie und Videokunst an der University of Arizona.

Sama Alshaibi The works of Palestinian-Iraqi artist Sama Alshaibi have been featured in prominent venues, including the 55th Venice Biennale, Honolulu Biennial, MoMA (NYC), Arab World Institute (Paris), Instants Video Festival, and Thessaloniki Film Festival. Her monograph «Sand Rushes In» was published by the Aperture Foundation in 2015 and she was awarded a Fulbright Scholars Fellowship to Palestine (2014– 2015). She is represented by Ayyam Gallery and is Associate Professor of Photography/Video Art at University of Arizona.
Flatform Flatform wurde 2007 gegründet und ist heute in Mailand und Berlin stationiert. Arbeiten von Flatform wurden in diversen Museen und Instituionen weltweit gezeigt – darunter im Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, im Centre Pompidou in Paris oder dem Garage Centre of the Arts in Moskau. Videoarbeiten von Flatform wurden zudem an Filmfestivals wie dem IFF Rotterdem, den Internationalen Filmfestspielen in Venedig, den Internationalen Kurzfilmtagen Oberhausen oder dem Nouveau Cinéma in Montréal gezeigt.
