A Filipino mother together with her son, daughter and two grand children arrived at the Hong Kong International airport last June 13, night. They were forced to sleep at Chek Lap Kok because of their eagerness to solve a family conflict. According to the mother, she (and her daughter) hasn’t seen her daughter in Hong Kong for the past few years. Her daughter (Miss Y) is a Hong Kong resident, married to a Western man and they are living in a 3 story residential house at Shouson Hill around Aberdeen area.

“Tumuloy lang kami sa bahay ng anak ko ng sumunod na araw(June 14), bilang ina nasasabik akong makita siya at ang kanyang pamilya which was moved to a feeling of deprivation pagkatapos ng mga naranasan namin sa kanyang pamamahay for 2 days,” mother Flora (not her real name) was relating to Kabayan Star with teary eyes. The family, including the 2 kids, left the elegant house after they were not fed well and even received rudeness from their own family, Miss Y. “Bago kami nag flight papunta dito sa Hong Kong, nasabi na sa akin ng ate ko na huwag na kaming magpunta dahil hindi kami puwedeng tumuloy sa kanilang

bahay. The family who were just waiting for the day of their flight going back to the Philippines spent their nights at Tsim Sha Tsui Park and Deep Water Bay beach kiosk. Three nights before their flight to the Philippines, a Filipino family living around Wellington Street around Central has generously accommodated them.

“Nais naming iparating sa lahat na sana kahit nagiging moderno ang ating mundo ay mapapanatili pa rin ang mga “Filipino family values” sana hindi tayo magbabago. Kami’y nagpapasalamat sa mga nakatulong sa amin sa iba’t ibang paraan lalo na sa pamilya ni Mr. Noel Sanorjo na kumupkop sa amin,” the brother said.

The family had bites after sleeping at a park and beach.

A child’s hand was jammed on an elevator door last month which caused a big cut to the young palm. The mother didn’t realize her daughter’s hand was caught by the elevator’s door when it was opening. According to the mother, her 3 years old daughter may have held the door when they were going out from the lift which she hasn’t been aware because she was pulling their luggage. “Mabuti nalang napatingin ako ulit sa pinto and I was really scared looking at my daughter’s hand stuck between the door of the lift. I have to pull it, at bumuka ang sugat nito kaya lumabas ang laman nito. I was relieved na it was just a cut, although I was very sorry na naexperience ito ng anak ko. Nagpapasalamat talaga ako na hindi ito very serious,” the mother said.

The family is hoping that their sister Miss Y would have time to attend counseling and be able to cope up of whatever dilemma she is under going.

Almost every month, accidents on lift doors are being treated at hospitals in Hong Kong. It has also been reported that a domestic helper was terminated because her child’s fingers were stuck on an elevator’s door. Lesson is…be more careful and sensible when entering or going out from elevators or lift with the children you are taking care. Above: This was taken 10 years ago inside an MTR. Ma’am Flora sited at the middle of her two daughters who were still in good terms.

A team of scientists that flew to the Australian Outback to recover a Japanese space capsule hoped that it contains the first-ever asteroid samples that could provide clues into the creation of the solar system.

The Hayabusa explorer returned to Earth after a seven-year journey. It was the first time a spacecraft successfully landed on an asteroid and returned to Earth. Two helicopters were taking scientists to the capsule’s landing site in the Woomera Prohibited Area, a remote military zone 300 miles (485 kilometers) northwest of the South Australian state capital of Adelaide.

It could take many hours to retrieve the capsule and collect samples, which will then be taken to Japan for study. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency launched the spacecraft in 2003 toward an asteroid called Itokawa. After taking photo images from all angles of the 1,640-foot (500-meter) long asteroid, Hayabusa landed on it twice in late 2005. The Japanese space agency said the aim of the $200 million project was to understand the origin and evolution of the solar system, as well as paving the way for future sample return missions.

from 45 government delegates from 40 countries that include the Philippines. The survey found mercury in all of the 58 hair test participants. Local green group EcoWaste Coalition explained that the amount of mercury in hair provides an estimate of methylmercury in the body. The survey found mercury levels between 93 ug/kg and 2956 ug/kg. More than one-third of the samples exceeded the US National Research Council mercury reference dose of 1000 ug/kg. It also noted that average mercury levels in people from developing and transition countries were twice the levels measured in delegates from developed countries. It added that fish consumption is the main way people are exposed to methylmercury, which is toxic to human health. Mercury is released to the

environment from many sources like mining activities, mercury-containing products and devices, product manufacturing sites, metal refining and recycling, cement kilns, waste dumps and incinerators, contaminated sites, and crematoria etc. “The survey illustrates the need to tackle the mercury

problem because mercury is present in all of us and it shouldn’t be a part of our bodies! To eliminate all sources of mercury, I and the Swedish government want an effective global legally binding instrument on mercury in place soon,” Andreas Carlgren, Swedish Environment Minister, one of the hair test participants said.

Deli meat danger Eating hot dogs, bacon, sausage or deli meats increases the chance of heart disease by 42 percent, researchers said in a recent report. Eating processed meat is also linked to a 19 percent higher risk of Type 2 diabetes, said the study, which appeared in the journal Circulation. There was no higher risk of heart disease or diabetes among people that ate unprocessed red meat such as beef or lamb. Most healthy eating guidelines already recommended limited meat consumption, but until now “studies have shown mixed results for relationships between meat consumption and cardiovascular diseases and diabetes,” said Renata Micha, the lead author of the study. “Most prior studies also did not separately consider the health effects of eating unprocessed red versus processed meats,” said Micha, a research fellow in the department of epidemiology at the

Harvard School of Public Health. The team reached their conclusions by studying information from 1,600 reports from around the world involving some 1.2 million people. On average, each 50 gram daily serving of processed meat (one to two slices of deli meats, or one hot dog) was associated with the higher heart disease and diabetes risk. Lifestyle factors associated with eating unprocessed red meats and processed meats “were similar, but only processed meats were linked to higher risk,” said report co-author Dariush Mozaffarian, assistant professor in the department of epidemiology at HSPH. While unprocessed red and processed meats contained similar average amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol, researchers found that processed meats “contained, on average, four times more sodium and 50 percent more nitrate preservatives,” said Micha. “This suggests that

differences in salt and preservatives, rather than fats, might explain the higher risk of heart disease and diabetes seen with processed meats.” In order to decrease heart attack and diabetes risk, it would be best to avoid processed meats such as bacon, salami, sausages, hot dogs and processed deli meats. “Based on our findings, eating one serving per week or less would be associated with relatively small risk,” said Micha. Single Asian carp found at Chicago An Asian carp was found 6 miles from Lake Michigan for the first time. Officials of the area said they need more information to determine the significance of the find. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources are finding out of the threat the carp have given them which would depend if how far the Asian carp accessed the Great Lakes.

A 20-pound Asian carp was caught in Lake Calumet on C h i c a g o ’ s S o u t h S i d e, a b o u t s i x m i l e s d o w n s t r e a m o f Lake Michigan by commercial fishermen.

The environmental groups also said that the discovery leaves no doubt that other Asian carp have breached barriers designed to prevent them from migrating from the Mississippi River system to the Great Lakes. Thereby, they found it as

proof for the government to act faster. Scientists and fishermen fear that if the carp become established in the lakes, they could starve out popular sport species and ruin the region’s $7 billion fishing

industry. Asian Carp can grow to 4 feet and 100 pounds and eat up to 40 percent of their body weight daily.

Pauline Dimson Last month, may nabasa akong health news tungkol sa colon.

Understanding menstruation cramp/pain Professor Vasco, Japan Haemodynamics (HK) Research Institute

Primary Dysmenorrhea A woman’s monthly cycle can come with some discomfort. The most common system is experiencing pain or cramps in the lower abdomen usually during the first two to three days of the period. It is called primary dysmenorrhea (literally means “difficult monthly flow”). While some women’s symptoms are relatively mild, others experience extreme pain accompanied with headaches, nausea, vomiting and lower back pain. But if the pain is so severe as to limit normal activities, or require medication, it may be a system of endometriosis). While painful menstruation is common among females, it is the leading cause of lost time from school and work among women in their teens and 20s. Menstrual cramps are not the same as the discomfort felt during premenstrual syndrome (PMS), although the symptoms of both disorders can sometimes be experienced as a continual process. Many women suffer from both PMS and menstrual cramps. (see my previous article on PMS)

Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more menstrual pain.

This type of cramping may begin within six months to a year following menarche (the beginning of menstruation), the time when a girl starts having menstrual periods. Causes of Dysmenorrhea During each month, the inner lining of the uterus builds up in preparation for a possible pregnancy. After ovulation, if the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, no pregnancy will result and the existing lining of the uterus is no longer required. The woman’s estrogen and progesterone hormone levels decline, and the lining of the uterus becomes swollen and is eventually discarded as the menstrual flow and is replaced by a new lining in the next period cycle.

They are 100% natural and there is no preservative or medicine’s side effects. For more information, please visit our shop at Worldwide Plaza, Central, Hong Kong or call us at 8208-8847. Prevention To help prevent constipation: • Eat a high-fiber diet. Choose lots of high-fiber foods, including fruits, vegetables, beans and whole-grain cereals and breads. Aim to consume 20 to 35 grams of fiber daily. Experiment to see if particular fruits or vegetables have a laxative effect for you. Remember to add fiber to your diet gradually to help reduce gas and bloating. • Limit low-fiber foods. Foods that are high in fat and sugar and those that tend to be low in fiber content, such as ice cream, cheese and processed foods, may cause or aggravate constipation. • Drink plenty of liquids. The exact amount of water and other fluids you should drink each day varies and depends on your age, sex, health, activity level and other factors. Limit caffeine intake, which can worsen symptoms of constipation by causing dehydration. • Exercise regularly. Engage in regular physical exercise, such as walking, biking or swimming, to help stimulate intestinal function. Getting at least 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week is recommended. • Heed nature’s call. Don’t ignore the urge to have a bowel movement. The longer you delay, the more water is absorbed from your stool and the harder it becomes. • Try fiber supplements. Health products such as RICA Ecolon Sweet Fiber can help keep stools soft and regular. Be sure to drink plenty of water or other fluids every day. • Be careful about introducing stimulant laxatives. Habitual use of agents such as Correctol and Dulcolax can make your colon dependent on them and may require increasing dosages until your intestine ceases to function properly. For occasional relief try a saline laxative such as milk of magnesia, which draws water into the colon to lubricate the stool. Avoid giving children laxatives without a doctor’s approval.

Fox was previously engaged to Green, 36, whom she has been dating for several years. The two appeared together in an online video protesting California school budget cuts earlier this year. Fox can next be seen in the film “Jonah Hex.”

While many thought it would never happen, ex screen love team and reallife couple Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion reunited on national television on a special two-part episode of the Megastar’s talk show ‘Sharon.’ But instead of tension, fun filled the set as KC watched her parents side by side on the couch catching up on each other while audiences, mostly die-hard Sharon-Gabby fans since the 80’s, had the blast seeing to two together again. Joining in as guest co host was Sharon’s best friend and KC godmother Zsa Zsa Padilla.

Sharon and Gabby mostly kept quiet, so KC initiated the talk by sharing stories about her parents. KC revealed that while shooting a movie back in the early 80’s, Sharon and Gabby would talk using twoway radios and used the code ’10-20’ for ‘I love you.’ A few years later, KC would be born at the time 10:20. Toni Gonzaga in talks with ABS-CBN bosses over ‘The Buzz’ offer Toni Gonzaga has confirmed that her camp and the management of ABS-CBN are now discussing the possibility of her replacing Kris Aquino on “The Buzz.” When asked about the progress of the negotiations, however, Gonzaga declined to give additional details. “Ngayon kasi parang hindi pa namin puwedeng sabihin lahat. Ako kasi it’s not yet over until it’s over. Marami pang puwedeng mangyari, maraming pwedeng mabago. So, may mga pag-uusap,” she said. And since there is no announcement yet from the management, she said she does not want to assume anything. “Dito sa industriyang ito lahat ng gagawin mo may pressure, whether it be pupunta ka sa isang show, may gagawin ka, kahit ano… pelikula, hosting. Pero right now, hindi pa

Meron pang ilang weeks si Ate Kris,” she said. Just the same, Gonzaga said it would be an honor for her to work again with Boy Abunda, Aquino’s co-host on “The Buzz” and “SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon.” “It’s always a pleasure to work with Tito Boy. Siguro it’s an honor na rin for me kasi being with someone in the business noong bago pa lang ako, siya ‘yong nag-interview sa akin. Ang dami kong natutunan sa kanya,” she said She went on to describe Abunda as “very professional” and someone who “doesn’t steal the limelight from you.” “Hinahayaan ka niyang mag-

shine in your own way and he pushes you, tinutulungan ka niya kapag kasama ka niya sa isang hosting stint. Hindi niya pinaparamdam sa ‘yo ‘yong status niya, ‘yung capabilities niya as a host. Ang mas pinaparamdam niya sa ‘yo ‘yong maging comfortable ka sa kanya and this is something na I will always treasure,” she said.

Willie Revillame spends free time playing golf, says daughter Amid criticisms, comedian and television host Willie Revillame is taking life in stride. This was the pronouncement of Revillame’s daughter, Meryll Soriano, on his dad’s respite from public life. “Panay ang bakasyon ni Daddy, kung saan-saan,” informed Soriano. “Panay ang golf niya. Wiling-wili siya sa golf,” she said chuckling as if punning on his father’s name. On whether Revillame would still return to ABS-CBN and resume

Is it true that the “Wowowee’s” on-leave host will move to a new TV station? “Hindi pa rin po namin napapag-usapan ‘yan. Hindi po ako nagtatanong sa kanya,” Soriano said. Revillame’s contract with ABSCBN still holds true until September of next year.

Filipinos are known of their great love of music. OFWs in Hong Kong prove this description to Filipinos! Every choir group in every church is amazing! Why? Could you imagine a helper who is working hard 6 days a week and yet is very cheerful while rendering their songs during their worship!

This group is a picture of every choir group in the Filipino community in Hong Kong. A happy heart who is always ready to sing for the Glory of our Almighty. Rafael is 8 years old, umiinom siya ng Chlorella Ai na best seller ng RICA International Food Supplements. His mom, Ms. Rowena Madayag has been working in Hong Kong and just like any mothers in Hong Kong dahil malayo sa pamilya worried siya sa anak na si Rafael na lagging matamlay at ayaw magaral. Subalit na confirm naman ng kanyang teacher na it was his own effort.

“Maria Chlowella” is named after the food supplement of RICA International Ltd. “Chlorella A1”. Ang mommy ni Chlowella ay diabetic and she was taking insulin before pregnancy. OFW of the MONTH “I learned to be patient and strong” Estelita Estefa, 71

For 29 years of working in Hong Kong, she hasn’t been married, she stayed single. Though she is alone, you could see a smile in her face which has been her tip of staying young.

Miss Estefa has been working for 29 years in Hong Kong as Domestic Helper. In her first employer she worked for 9 years. For long years of working overseas, she learned to be very independent, patient and strong. Most helpers, she may be Filipino, Indonesian or Thai, don’t want to work with other helper. According to some helpers, having a colleague in one house would give you difficulty because of individual differences. But for Miss Estefa, it has not been a problem on her side and that she was not affected. “Tatlo kami dati sa bahay dahil 2 ang alaga naming mga bata at

nakatira kami sa residential house. Naranasan ko ring nag-alaga ng bagong panganak na baby kaya nagpuyat din ako noon, talagang magdamag na pag-aaruga na pinagtiisan dahil parte yon ng aking trabaho bilang yaya, ate Estelita said. Ma. Teresa, 48

“Ang pagtatrabaho sa malayong lugar ay makakapagbigay ng stress sa atin, but, I only did my job.

INSPIRATIONAL THOUGHTS The Mystery of Life ~ Helen Steiner Rice ~

We walk in a world that is strange and unknown And in the midst of the crowd we still feel alone, We question our purpose, our part and our place In this vast land of mystery suspended in space, We probe and explore and try hard to explain The tumult of thoughts that our minds entertain . . . But all of our probing and complex explanations Of man’s inner feelings

and fears and frustrations Still leaves us engulfed in the “mystery of life” With all of its struggles and suffering and strife, Unable to fathom what tomorrow will bring-But there is one truth, to which we can cling, For while life’s a mystery we can’t understand The “great giver of life” is holding our hand And safe in His care there is no need for seeing For “in Him we live and move and have our being”.

JULY 2010 VOL. XiV NO. 92

Aries Mar 21-Apr 20 You are spirited and enthusiastic this month, dear Aries, feeling personally on top of your game. You are reinventing yourself, and while this fact doesn’t always go over well with a partner, it’s something you have to do. You could be seeing a partner as holding you back from discovering yourself. Some of you could be feeling lonely, whether you are partnered or not. However, your enthusiasm for self-discovery is undeniable. Family matters are in the spotlight in July. Changes in the organization of your home or with family members may be in order mid-month. Something has to change.

Taurus Apr 21-MAY 21 Pressure in a romance (or with children for some of you) is definitely easing this month, and you’re super-charged and ready to enjoy yourself, dear Taurus. Important conversations and communications occur in July that require special attention. Some of you have decided to begin new studies and to hone your skills. It’s a good time for these matters, particularly since August brings whirlwind energy and stamina for working through projects. While family matters are certainly more comfortable than they were earlier in the year, more adjustments and changes are in order.

Gemini May 22-Jun 21 Finances are not without concern for you this month, dear Gemini, but there is excellent energy with you for making a fresh start. A new budget or plan is in order. Luckily, good advice is easy to find now. Many of you will be redecorating and reorganizing your homes in July. It’s also a strong month for entertaining and peace-making with family. Challenges in your love life or with children that you first faced some months ago resurface in the last week of July. You are required to take action and bring more structure and reality to your life.

Cancer Jun 22-Jul 22 A Solar Eclipse occurs in your sign on July 11th. Before the eclipse is an excellent period for review, meditation, and any kind of purging activity that rids you of things that no longer serve you well. From the 11th, you shift gears. It’s all about you and your attitude now, and it’s time to reinvent yourself. As you make changes to how you approach the world, you will find that you attract different experiences and people into your life. Finances are very strong this month. People are supportive and offering good, objective advice.

Jul 23-Aug 22

Rest is in order for the first three weeks of July, dear Leo. You’re not exactly putting everything on hold, but you are taking more time for yourself to recharge. You may be talking ahead of yourself now, about things that you are not quite certain about. Financial worries that may have been plaguing you are lessened considerably. You’re feeling significantly more confident about your moneymaking abilities this month.

Virgo Aug 23- Sep 23 July should be a strong month for you, dear Virgo. Making new connections, or cementing existing ones, is in store. The 11th is a great time for making a wish and coming up with an exciting new long-term plan or idea for the future. From the 10th, your charm and personal appeal skyrockets. A new look or manner is likely to be very successful now. If you want others to see things from your perspective, this is an ideal time. You have energy to spare and have few problems asserting your desires and needs.

Libra Sep 24- Oct 23 Career matters are powerful this month, dear Libra. Changes in goals, plans, and priorities may be necessary. Taking the lead or receiving more attention might initially feel uncomfortable, but as soon as you begin to believe in yourself and have confidence in your abilities, others will return the respect. From November 2009 to April 2010, issues of independence and security surfaced, bringing some tension and indecisiveness to your life. These matters re-emerge now and demand more attention.

Scorpio Oct 24- Nov 22 You are feeling quite enthusiastic and hopeful this month, dear Scorpio. Around the 11th, events are such that you see your life from a whole new -- and more positive -- perspective. Your career is growing and some shuffling around is likely now as priorities change. Make a point of spending time with friends or of being involved in group settings this month, if this doesn’t happen naturally. New ideas and inspiration can be found through your networking efforts. Work is busy but sometimes stressful.

Sagittarius Nov 23-Dec 21 Energy levels continue to be strong for you this month, dear Sagittarius. Events are such, however, that tame some of the wild optimism you have been feeling. This is designed to get you on a more realistic track. Challenging or perplexing decisions may need to be made with regards to your social relationships or with children. Financial new beginnings may be in store for you in July. Circumstances require that you rethink your financial strategies. Debts and loans, financial backing, or a partner’s income are part of the picture.

Capricorn Dec 22- Jan 20 Getting your love life into order is a strong theme this month, dear Capricorn. Before the 11th, take the time to get in touch with your relationship needs so that when the eclipse in your partnership sector arrives on the 11th, you are ready to make a fresh start. Complicated decisions are likely in July revolving around learning and education. Some of you will be deciding whether a project or idea is worth pursuing any longer. A strong focus on career goals, along with the re-emergence of increased responsibilities and work loads, are in focus from the 21st.

Aquarius Jan 21- Feb 19 Work and love are strong themes for you this month, dear Aquarius. You are very busy taking care of day-to-day affairs, work projects, and health matters. You are called upon to deal with the details and practical side of everyday life, to become more organized, and to take charge of your routines. It’s time to formulate some clear goals and plans that get you back on track physically and mentally. Very good energy is with you regarding a partnership. While a little more patience is necessary, you are willing to listen and give support.

Pisces Feb 20- Mar 20 July is a good month for leisurely activities as well as work, dear Pisces. A lighter, less burdened feeling is with you this month, and more joy found in the work you do. You are finding your inner muse, and making a fresh start on a creative level. Some of you will experience a new beginning in a romance. Although your love life is likely to be changeable, good things are happening and others are finding you especially easy to be around. The harder lessons you have been learning about relationships and from others in recent years are wrapped up this month.
