This half term seems to have flown by and we are now in the midst of the public exams for Year 11 and 13. We are extremely proud of the maturity and commitment that all of our students have shown when approaching this important milestone in their education career. Thank you to all of our excellent teachers, support staff, parents and carers that have supported these students during this crucial time.

I’m sure you will see throughout this bulletin all of the fantastic enrichment opportunities that have taken place during this half term. Our challenge & enrichment team have led some fantastic visits to the National History Museum, The London Dungeons, Oxford University to name a few. Our Duke of Edinburgh students have also experienced some fantastic expeditions and managed to pass their certifications with flying colours! It’s excellent to see so many educational visits taking place, after being unable to run them these last academic years.

The half term break will be a great opportunity to get ready for the learning ahead. Please ensure that your child has all of the appropriate equipment to be ready for learning and is dressed in accordance with our Uniform policy, which available on our website. If you have any concerns or issues regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact your child's Year Progress Leader, who will be more than happy to help with any issues. Can I also take this time to remind you that it’s essential that all students arrive at school on time each morning. Students need to be through the gate by 8.35am, ready to line up for 8.40am. Being punctual and ready for the take is essential for a good start of a day of learning.

As you will be aware, Year 10 also has important Pre-Public Examinations approaching during the last half term. Please do check out our excellent Revision Resources page on our website, which features a RVHS Revision microsite made by the members of our teaching staff. Year 10 have also been taken through this microsite and have had a go at most of our RVHS Revision techniques during the last two Personal Development sessions. Please note that all students can always access work from previous lessons / revision materials by clicking on the materials section on their subject Google classroom pages.

We look forward to some exciting events in our final half term of the year. We are particularly excited to run our Sports day ‘as normal’ for the first time in a number of years. We are also looking forward to celebrating some of our wonderful students during their end of year celebration assemblies & rewards events. The Challenge & Enrichment showcase for Years 7, 8 and 9 will also be a particular highlight!

Enjoy the extra day's holiday in lieu of the Jubilee and have fun at any planned 'Golden Jubilee’ festivities with friends, families and local communities. We have a great school community here, and one, I am always proud to represent.

It was fun this afternoon, planting some trees around the school site as part of the Queen's Green Canopy'. Thank you to Lynne Dyson and Simon Hearn for your support. We will be holding commemorative assemblies in the first week back.

Year 7 Five half terms down and we're now into the final stretch. As we start to look at the Year 6 transition process, it's hard to believe that we were doing this a year ago! moving forward however, I feel that I need to make you aware of the expectations for next half term.

Uniform, I am aware that they are growing taller almost every second (I can feel myself getting shorter). We do still expect the standards of uniform to remain the same. If there are any issues with this, please let me know and we can sort things out. If you have some uniform that no longer fits and is in relatively good condition, please feel free to donate it to the school and we can use it in the future.

The behaviour on the Astro is improving but I do need to take the opportunity to point out that the year group need to behave whilst they are on it. No slide tackles etc. Although the weather is heating up that does not mean that they should not bring in water pistols, or punch holes in the lids of bottles and spray them at each other. Jumpers do not need to be worn but blazers do, On a very positive front, having the opportunity to make pizzas with students who excelled in our motivation to learn competition, has to be one of the highlights of my year.

I look forward to seeing everyone back in school next half term for the final stretch!

Year 8 We have come to the end of another half term and what an amazing half term it has been. Being blessed with some incredible weather, some not so good weather and filled with amazing opportunities.

Last week there was the Greenwich trip that Ms Harris led. She fed back how perfectly behaved the students were and how proud they made the Roding Valley community. Please keep your eyes peeled at RVHS social media for any photographs that were taken on the day.

Our Year Progress Leader's student of the half term goes to Kirill Ismailov for being so welcoming and supportive to new students.

This week the PE department has been getting times and dates for district sports and Sports day! These are both the best day of the year and definitely something as many year 8's need to get involved in!

Year 9 Wow... Another half term done and dusted and wasn't it a busy one.

I would like to start by congratulating our year 9 students who have successfully completed their expedition component of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. It was lovely to be a part of this achievement last week and to see the hard work and determination pay off when they finished their two-day assessment expedition through the beautiful Chelmsford countryside. A massive well done to all of the students involved and I look forward to seeing them finishing their Physical, Skill & Volunteering component of the award, to receive their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. Bring on the Silver DofE award in year 10!

I had the pleasure of taking 20 Year 9 students to the London Dungeon today which provided me with a fantastic opportunity to continue building those positive relationships with our wonderful year 9 pupils. All the students that attended were well behaved, courteous and represented RVHS wonderfully.

Last week, Ms Pinches had the pleasure of taking a group of Year 9 students to the British museum. Reports were that all students had an enjoyable time and loved the opportunity to visit a museum whilst being able to wonder through central London. I would like to thank Ms Pinches for organising all of the Challenge & Enrichments trips this year, and I look forward to more student's being able to access these wonderful trips and visits in the future.

I would like to remind our Year 9 parents and carers about the opportunity to purchase the English literacy packs on offer from the English department. Please do refer to the email from Mrs Routledge outlining what is included in this package as well as the prices. Payments can be made via ParentPay. We are in the very fortunate position to be running two ski trips next year, and we have had some spaces become available on both of them. We will be skiing in Andorra during February half term, and USA in the Easter holidays, 2023. If you are at all interested in either of these wonderful opportunities, please do get in touch with me.

When we return from the half term break on Monday 6th June, all year 9 students will receive a new timetable, which will include their GCSE option subjects. Based on my conversations over the past week or so with many of our Year 9's, our students are very excited about starting these subjects, and I do hope that all our students put their best foot forward and start their new GCSE's by being the best versions of themselves. The new timetable will also include your child's new form groups. The new forms have been put together to ensure our Personal Development curriculum can be delivered effectively and that each and every student in year 9 are able to access quality first teaching during our wonderful careers, personal development and character & culture provision during period 1 lessons across the week.

As we return after the break, and the weather warms up, I wanted to remind all parents and students that blazers must continue to be worn at all times. Also, as our year 9's continue to grow at alarmingly fast rates, many of our PE skorts and tartan skirts are becoming too short. Can you please check your daughters skirt and skort length over the half term break to ensure they meet our uniform expectations.

Have a restful and enjoyable break and I look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 6th June; ready to hit the ground running!

Year 11 We are all really proud of the serious and focussed way that year 11 students are approaching their GCSE examinations. A huge well done to you all!

In other news -the year book is on its way and some of you may have noticed that it has popped up on ParentPay, I will send out a notice as soon as it is available to purchase. These will be given out on the 29th June 2022 before the leavers assembly, they will also be available to collect on GCSE results day.

Our Year 8 students had an amazing time at The Royal Observatory in Greenwich learning about space.

Our Year 9 students went on a fantastic day out to the Royal Institute and learnt all about magnets and motors.

Our Year 7s went to London Zoo, they saw lots of animals and did a workshop on adaptations and evolution.

Bronze Duke Of Edinburgh Award Our Year 9 Bronze DofE Groups had a fantastic time camping overnight at Essex Outdoors Danbury with their expedition finishing at Hylands Park.

We have 8 student's work being exhibited at this local event. If you are able to visit, please do leave a comment in the book!

Recently we approached Loughton Library and asked them if they wanted us to display artwork on a very empty, very dull wall at the end of the study area.

We're pleased to say that we've now filled this space with examples of past GCSE work to really liven up the room.

If you do happen to go into the library between now and summer, please do speak to the librarians and tell them how nice it looks with all of the work displayed!

Year 10 Science Our Year 10 students had a lot of fun in their science class with Miss Hodges this week dissecting fish eyes.

Year 8 Drama Blap! Bloop! Bleep! Sapphire, Ecehavin and Eylul have taken the prop homework to light speed for the Y8 sci-fi melodrama assessment

Congratulations to Isabelle Davenport in Year 8 who has been growing her hair to donate to the Little Princess Trust, so far she has raised £160.

Year 10 Science Year 10’s had fun in Miss Hodges’ class learning how to describe and draw neurones.

Well done to all the participants of the Queen's jubilee cupcake competition winners. They made and decorated delicious cupcakes.

On Monday 23rd May, 11 students from Year 12 were invited to come to The University of Oxford - New College. They had an incredibly informative and exciting presentation from one of the tutors, followed by a tour with 2 lovely student ambassadors.

The students were able to ask the student ambassadors about their experience at Oxford, the application process and what their favourite things about the university were. We were shown around New College, which included a croquet lawn and a wine cellar for students (how very Oxford!).

Last week 15 Year 9 students had the opportunity to spend the day exploring the British Museum.

This was a wonderful chance to explore the history curriculum but outside of the classroom.

Some of the top tips about the application process to Oxford was:  When writing a personal statement make sure to include 80% Super-Curricular (reading, podcasts, research etc.) and 20% Extra-Curricular (what you do in your spare time to prove you’re not a complete robot)  Make sure to have fun with the interview, this is not a stressful moment but more an opportunity to have a discussion with someone who is an expert in your subject  Choose a subject that you are truly passionate about - if you’re doing it for ‘career’ or ‘money’ than that will show through in your interview  Be confident in yourself, Oxford is not full of ‘posh toffs’ like everyone thinks. Majority of students actually come from state-funded secondary schools!

On Thursday 26th May, a group of 20 Year 9 students had the chance to visit the popular attraction, the London Dungeon.

Students were welcomed by the Lift Jester, descended into the dungeons only to meet Jack the Ripper and Guy Fawkes. A wonderful day to see some of their History lessons in action.

Thank you to Ms Edwards and Ms Stone for accompanying them out into London. Such a fun day!

In England, a Free School Meal (FSM) is a statutory benefit available to school aged children from families who receive other qualifying benefits and who have been through the relevant registration process. Recently, the process of applying for Free School Meals at Roding Valley High School has changed to an online application in order to improve speed and reduce the burden of paperwork for parents. It is important that parents register their children for free school meals if they are entitled as the school receives additional funding known as the Pupil Premium to support the children’s learning. The use of the pupil premium is personalised to meet the needs of the children who are entitled to support, such as 1-1 tuition, additional LSA support and intervention groups, access to school visits, Learning Mentor, speech and language assistants, Family Support and counselling.

Over the last term I have had the pleasure of going on two opportunities to learn more about the law and life at university. I discovered both the Cambridge Sixth Form Law Conference and the Queen Mary's Pathway to Law programme through the advert on the Sixth Form weekly bulletin.

Both the opportunities allowed me to solidify my choice to study law at university next year. The Cambridge Sixth Form Law Conference was amazing we were invited to sit in lectures by some of the world’s best academics on all aspects of the law taught at Cambridge. This allowed me to understand how teaching would be presented in the form of lectures and tutorials to me as a student at a top Russell Group University. As well as this by being allowed to stay at St Catherine's college it allowed me to develop an understanding of the social skills that need to be developed in order to make new friends and socialise to be able to understand the jump from Sixth form here at Roding valley to University. The few days also consisted of advice on how to write a personal statement as well as interactions with current and past students who similarly shared the same goals of becoming a lawyer.

Through the Pathways to Law program with Queen Mary's university. They similarly gave taster lectures on Tort and Contract law. This again allowed my understanding of teaching in a Russell Group University to be developed. They put an importance on using the 15 hours of contact time you get with the professors by lectures and tutorials. After that Queen Mary's University explained that to achieve in your degree self-study is the most vital aspect of the education. After the lectures the current students gave a wonderful tour of the campus and explained parts of the history as well as the future plans for the university.

Finally, the Queen Marys team educated us through lectures from the widening participation officer about budgeting tips as well as how to cope on a student budget then the Law admissions manger encouraged going to open days, reading and gaining work experience to enhance your personal statement. Overall the Sixth Form bulletin has aided me hugely in helping me aid and choose my path for university and I personally could not recommend it further to any students or parents questioning whether to read and engage with it.

Explore together: Ask your child to show you their favourite websites and apps and what they do on them. Listen, show interest and encourage them to teach you the basics of the site or app.

Chat about online safety little and often: Young people are likely to want to explore new apps and websites this month, whether that is for learning or for fun. Take this opportunity to talk to them about how to stay safe on these new services, and in general. Ask if anything ever worries them while they are online. Make sure they know that if they ever feel worried, they can get help by talking to you or another adult they trust.

Help your child identify trusted adults who can help them if they are worried: This includes you and other adults at home, as well as adults from wider family, school or other support services who they are able to contact at this time. Encourage them to draw a picture or write a list of their trusted adults.

Be non-judgemental: Explain that you would never blame them for anything that might happen online, and you will always give them calm, loving support.

Talk about how their online actions can affect others: If your child is engaging with others online, remind them to consider how someone else might feel before they post or share something. If they are considering sharing a photo/video of somebody else, they should always ask permission first.

Parental controls: Make use of the parental controls available on your home broadband and any internet enabled device in your home. You can find out more about how to use parental controls by visiting your broadband provider’s website.

Direct your child to age appropriate information about relationships and sex: It’s natural for young people to start exploring their sexual feelings online and adolescents are more inclined to take risks. It’s important to understand this and to talk to your child in a positive way. Thinkuknow, Brook, The Mix and Childline all provide age appropriate information about relationships and sex that you can signpost your child to.

Make sure they know about CEOP: Young people can report a concern about grooming or sexual abuse to CEOP at www.ceop.police.uk/safety-centre/ and get support from a specialist Child Protection Advisor.

Support your child with Thinkuknow websites The age appropriate Thinkuknow websites are a great way to start and continue chats about online safety.

Classroom How to Log on to Google Classroom?

Students can log into their Gmail using their school email address and their password. Their school email will be the year they started at RVHS started plus their first initial and surname @rodingvalley.net (example- 19plarkin@rodingvalley.net).

Once your child has have logged in, they will need to click on the google apps button and then select ‘Google Classroom’ Your child will then be able to see all of the classes they belong to.

They will then need to click on the class they want to use resources for and take a look at everything that their class teacher has posted for them to work on. They will be able to download items and make comments on them. Teachers will be regularly posting new work on their Google Classrooms.

What to Do if your child is a Missing a Subject their Google Classroom?

If your child is missing a Google Classroom for one of their subjects, they will need to click on the addition symbol, followed by ‘Join Class’ and then enter the Class Code for their missing subject.

Class Codes are available from their subject teacher.

Top Tips for Our Students  Students must keep up to date with their lessons by using Google Classroom every day.  Use their workbooks to complete the work shown on their Google Classroom.  Don’t slack on presentation! Keep their notes in order of the lessons on the Google Classroom.  Year 11 and 13 Students: There will be revision materials available on Google Classroom.

Please use them.

What is DODDLE? Doddle provides students with access to thousands of engaging, formative resources and guides students through the curriculum.

Doddle Progress automatically tracks student attainment in key curriculum skills. Parents can see student attainment and progress through our easy-to-use Doddle Parent feature.

Skills within Doddle are rated as red, amber or green. These ratings give a clear indication of how much progress a child has made and highlight the weaker areas to be targeted with revision.

Each student has a personal Doddle account where they can access their homework to-do lists and families can view the work their child has been assigned.

These accounts enable parents to view their child's results and encourage them to better their scores by using Doddle's revision resources.

What is Seneca?

Seneca is a free home learning & revision platform that is very popular with our students. It is based on cognitive science, has adaptive learning and can be accessed by our students via their phones!

What Content is available to our Students through Seneca?

Seneca has resources available for KS3, KS4 and KS5 students that has been supplied to them from AQA, OCR, EdExcel Pearson and IGCSE. Our students will be able to access content designed for each of their subjects and also for their specific courses.

There is so much to choose from.

Some areas are even linked to the Exam Boards Course Specifications.

How to Access Seneca?

Students will need to go to https://www.senecalearning.com/, click try for free and create a log in with their school email address.

Once Logged in Once they are logged in, students are able to search for different subject areas and learn about their chosen topic. At the end of each subject presentation there will be a quiz on the presentation This Online tool will enable our students to stay on top of their home learning.
