This week I have been lucky enough to attend two wonderful events that typify what Roding Valley High School is all about. On Thursday of last week I, along with many other staff, students and parents, attended the Art and Photography Exhibition. Mr Tisdale and his team of staff had worked tirelessly in the days leading up to it to put on an exhibition of real quality and we were certainly not disappointed. There was so much variety on offer - paintings, sculpture, photographs and textiles. We clearly have some highly talented students and this was a true celebration of what they can achieve. It was great to speak to so many students and their proud parents and to be able to see the progress that the artists have made during their GCSE courses. I would just like to say a hearty congratulations to all those students who were exhibiting work, many for the first time in public, as well as thanking the staff for all of their hard work in supporting the individuals to produce such memorable pieces. We were then treated to a further evening of celebration with the English Challenge and Enrichment evening on Monday. I was delighted to see so many parents and staff coming into the School Hall at 6.30pm and I must confess that since this was my first experience of this event I didn't really know what to expect. I needn't have been concerned as the English Faculty put on a tremendous show. Ms Atkinson co-ordinated the event very effectively and really brought out the best in the students. There was a very wide range of English work on display to peruse with stories, poems, games and presentations. The formal part of the evening comprised a number of students reading their own poems followed by a superb performance of a play based on the Grimms' Fairy Tales. This had been written and performed by the Lower School students themselves and there was drama and comedy in good measure. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the show and it really was an excellent demonstration of what Roding Valley High School students can do when they work hard and throw themselves into their studies.
