To ensure your business continues to grow, education planning is vital for keeping your team motivated and inspired. Irene Meikle, Head of Education, has a few top tips: Start the year by dividing your team into groups and give each group a project: • Identify new trends, the newest tools or technologies • Identify who your key competitors are and why they pose a threat • Evaluate past education and think about what is needed to meet objectives. Then bring the teams back together and discuss the findings – this should lead to a conversation about how your salon can stay at the forefront and education can fit with what’s going to help your salon develop.

NEW YEAR

NEW ATTITUDE Call The KMS Academy on 020 7218 4000 to find out how you can revamp your business in 2012!

Nick Wood, Managing Director, shares his SMART approach to help you hit your targets for the year ahead: Specific – targets must be specific and easily understood Measurable – you must be able to quantify success Attributable – who is responsible for making actions happen? Realistic – make sure targets can be achieved Time – what is your deadline? Use this checklist when you are considering your objectives and goals for the year and make sure they fit each criteria.

Human Resources Director, Ian Hicks has a five point strategy to help you and your team move forward together: • Set up a meeting to talk about business and create a monthly theme for your team to focus on. • Design posters to capture the spirit of the theme and display them in communal areas as reminders. • Create prompts to keep your key messages ‘sticky’, such as mugs and pens. • Plan special January one-on-one meetings that will make your staff members feel really important, make sure they know your objectives and how they fit into the salon development.

Team REVIVAL

A New Year marks the perfect moment to refresh your salon interior! It’s a new season, your clients are beginning to think about spring and their hair is most probably in need of some TLC. Wow them with a New Year refresh, change your cushion covers to a bright colour, change the sweets that you offer to something fruity, offer smoothies instead of coffees, buy your team brightly coloured name badges …these small things make a big difference!

Color Zoom Challenge in Miami A Fantastic Win for the UK! Goldwell’s Annual Color Zoom Global Finale took place in party city Miami. The 3-day South Beach spectacular was not only an inspirational and educational festival of colour, it was also a whole lot of fun … especially so for the UK who celebrated another UK Global Winner!

Saturday 15th October After touching down at Miami International Airport, the UK contingency were whisked off to the impressive Gansevoort Hotel in South Beach where they would stay for the next 3 days. That evening the Goldwell UK team hosted a glamorous cocktail party to welcome their guests to Miami, and to allow them to meet and greet the UK finalists – Lisa Whiteman from WebsterWhiteman in London (Partner Colorist), Lucy Keadell from Elements in Teddington (Creative Colorist), and Ingrida Azarionok from Lexingtons in London (New Talent Colorist). Neil Barton, Global Creative Colorist winner 2010, from Neil Barton Salon in Livingston, also attended the party to pass his advice to the UK finalists for the live finals the following day.

Sunday 16th October It was an early start for the national finalists as the live competition began at 8am in the landmark Miami Convention Centre. The competition had a live viewing format to allow attendees from each country to support their finalists and watch them recreating their winning looks. Finalists were given 3 hours to reproduce the colour creation that won their place at the Global Event, before each category was judged by an International Judging Panel, including the UK’s very own multi-award winning Shane Bennett from Northern Ireland. Shane is a Color Zoom expert after he worked on the trend collection in 2007. Following an exciting day came an even more exciting evening, as the Global Finale took place in the Miami Convention Centre. The event room was draped in black with an enormous video screen to showcase the finalists as they kicked off the event with a catwalk of models from the afternoon’s competition …

World famous celebrity hairdresser Nick Arrojo, who recently joined Goldwell as a US Ambassador, showcased a variety of creative looks to demonstrate simple yet stunning editorial looks. His creative use of contrasting colour gave us a new twist on this year’s dip-dye trend, with a nod to what will be in vogue next season. The Color Zoom trend for 2012 was then premiered. A beautiful catwalk show brought the new FasciNature trend to life, with colour and styling inspired by the world’s greatest designer – Mother Nature. In a collection that captures the imagination, natureinspired hair is beautifully influenced by plants, sea creatures, insects and the patterns from nature, to create a colourful trend full of interesting textures, shimmering tones and fascinating shapes to set the trend for Color Zoom 2012. The show closed with amazing, awe-inspiring avant-garde interpretations.

HOW TO ACHIEVE THE PERFECT IMAGE FOR

Firstly decide what the pictures are to be used for, this will give you a starting point for your shoot. In this case the purpose is the Goldwell Color Zoom competition - keep this in mind at all times and don’t lose sight of your objectives. Understanding the brief and the rules is the most important detail. Competition Photography: Read the rules twice, work out what the Judges are looking for and try and assess what has won in the past. Keep focused, stay in budget and do what you do best. This is not the time to experiment!

Start at the end and work backwards! Grab some tear sheets, create a ‘mood or story board’ and make sure everybody is on the same wavelength … take your time, look in fashion not hair magazines as these are more directional and will be more predictive about what is going to happen next season or the one after. Storyboards are essential: These communicate the ideas in your head. Putting one together makes you think about all the aspects of the Shoot. They make you do your research, which can’t be bad! If you have your Shoot planned, collect ideas and images well in advance, it helps.

Plan the look of your shoot with your Photographer and Team Always keep it simple and understated – this way the images are more likely to succeed. If you want to create a winning image, use everyone involved to bring it together. After all, if you are paying for a Photographer, Stylist and Make-up Artist, then let them use their expertise to guide you. Team Work • Share ideas, but keep a rein on what brief everyone is working to. • Photographers are your most important asset and a good Model can make or break the Shoot. (Hire a professional model if you can – it pays) • Make-up is not for amateurs or beauticians (photographic make up is very specialised and really good ones are hard to find!) • As for the clothes, a good session stylist is really important as they not only supply the clothes but help to create the look of the shoot.

Shoot Day Models If you are using a professional model, make sure you confirm everything with the agency especially fees and agreed travel fees ... this will avoid any costs ending up higher than expected. Models are often late - remember it’s your time that you’re paying for so make sure they can’t turn round and say “I didn’t know where I was going” if it’s in writing then you can sort it out with the agency! Equipment Take everything you need with you - products, electrical equipment, gowns, towels, grips, pins etc. If you don’t take it, it may ruin your day so check and double check! During the shoot Keep aware of what is happening in front of camera, most photographers now shoot on digital systems so you can see exactly what the photographer sees. It’s your responsibility to make sure that every hair is perfect so keep on your toes and make sure that nothing goes astray. Retouch Once you have selected your final images they will be retouched to achieve the perfect finish. Remember retouch varies dramatically in cost, the sky being the limit! This is why you should try and make sure that everything is as perfect as possible on the day ... extra retouching can prove very expensive!

Apply these simple rules and you can’t go wrong! Speak to your sales representative about our Color Zoom Photo Shoot Days

This was an amazing project to be a part of as I could be really creative and help a fantastic charity. It is very rewarding to make something you love and get a great response from the audience. The money raised will be a huge help to children in East Africa Shane Bennett

Goldwell Ambassador Shane Bennett brought haute couture to Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland. Along with Irish fashion designer Geraldine Connon they put on a stunning fashion show in aid of Save the Children’s East Africa Appeal. 17 models strutted down the catwalk for two packed shows that used stories to entertain and inspire the audience. The stories, depicted through fashion, were the romance of 1950s London, Gaga Dolls and Ladies Day. The show finale, entitled Tsarina, featured strong striking looks with the models wearing sensational ball gowns and dramatic wigs. The fashion show was a huge success, raising an amazing £20,000.
