Welcome

30th November 2024

Message from Sarah ChesworthHead of Secondary

This event provides a valuable chance to explore the curriculum and discover how each subject is taught and learnt.

The transition from Primary to Secondary can sometimes leave parents feeling uncertain and uninformed. At KTJ Secondary, we focus on teaching students to manage their time effectively and to take charge of their own learning journey. However, we understand that parents want to remain engaged and well-informed about their child’s experience.

Our Meet the Department Day is designed to bridge this gap, offering Form 1 (Year 7) to Form 3 (Year 9) parents the opportunity to connect with our teachers and gain insight into what a typical day looks like for their child at KTJ. This event provides a valuable chance to explore the curriculum and discover how each subject is taught and learnt.

We hope you enjoy this opportunity to delve into the world of KTJ Secondary and feel more connected to your child’s educational journey.

Curriculum

At KTJ, our well-mapped curriculum goes beyond academic excellence, embedding vital cross-curricular skills that prepare students for the complexities of a rapidly changing world. Through a holistic approach, we integrate global citizenship, fostering an understanding of diverse cultures and international issues, alongside intercultural learning, which encourages empathy, collaboration, and respect across cultural boundaries. Digital skills are seamlessly woven throughout the curriculum, equipping students with the technological proficiency required to navigate and thrive in a digital-first future. These skills are not taught in isolation but are carefully interlinked with subject content, ensuring students develop a broad and balanced skill set that extends beyond the classroom. Our departments can't wait to tell you all about it!

Teaching and Learning

We are committed to embracing more interactive teaching and learning practices, moving away from traditional lecture-style instruction. Research consistently shows that active learning methods significantly enhance student outcomes. A study by Freeman et al. (2014) found that students in active learning environments scored 6% higher on assessments and were 1.5 times less likely to fail compared to those in traditional lecture settings. To support our staff in adopting these impactful methods, we have integrated Tom Sherrington’s Learning WalkThrus into our professional development programme. This evidence-based framework provides clear, practical strategies for interactive teaching, focusing on techniques such as questioning, feedback, and structured collaborative activities. By equipping our teachers with these tools, we ensure that lessons are not only engaging but also foster deeper understanding and critical thinking among students.

Message from Rachel EasawAssistant Head of Secondary

As students approach the critical stage of selecting their IGCSE subject choices, it is essential to make informed choices that align with their interests, strengths, and future aspirations. Form 1 (Year 7) to Form 3 (Year 9) students should consider their academic strengths, areas of interest, and long-term career goals when choosing their IGCSE subjects. Some subjects may be prerequisites for further studies, so it is important to research university or college requirements early.

Our subject teachers are available to provide detailed insights into the curriculum and expectations for each subject. Parents will have opportunities to speak to Subject Leads on IGCSE subject choices during today’s event. Students will also have opportunities to attend designed panel talks and taster lessons in Term 2 to provide a clear understanding of the IGCSE programme and subject requirements.

We wish to encourage students to maintain a balanced workload by selecting a combination of subjects that challenge them without causing unnecessary stress.

Our goal is to empower students with the knowledge and support their need to succeed in their IGCSE journey.
