Legislators reflect on area’s concerns By Constance Dwyer Within a packed room at the Millbury VFW, 7 Blackstone Valley legislators gathered to answer a series of questions presented by the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce Chairman, William Kerrissey. It was their regularly-scheduled breakfast meeting on February 13th at 7:30 a.m. Whittier Farms prepared the ample breakfast and the Chamber co-sponsor was Salmon Health & Retirement. The legislators, sworn in at the State House in November, 2014 were: Senators Michael Moore and Ryan Fattman and Representatives John Fernades, Paul Frost, Kevin Kuros, Joseph McKenna and David Muradian. Ms. Kathleen Polanowicz, District Director and General Counsel, represented Congressman James McGovern. Executive Director Jeanne Hebert aptly commented that “The legislators want to hear from you to help them do their job better.” One of the hot potato questions dealt with the minimum wage which in-

creased to $1.00 an hour on January 1st, 2015. Sen. Mike Moore said the increase was to help people “get off welfare.” Sen. Ryan Fattman admitted openly that he opposed the minimum wage increase because he believes that it “damages small businesses.” He believes the “earned income tax credit” is a better route. Rep. John Fernandes of Milford, an attorney for 32 years,

“We need more trained workers, that in the next 10 years there will be 10,000 unfillable manufacturing vacancies” - Rep. Ryan Fattman

said he had a meeting recently with the Milford Chamber of Commerce regarding electricity prices and the shocking increase in the electric rate in November of 2014. He also said that

we need to focus on “driving down the unemployment rate.” Rep. Kevin Kuros of Uxbridge has spent four years on the Economic Development & Emerging Technology Committee and said “two out of three jobs nationally are created by small business.” He also voted against the minimum wage increase because of “its impact on small business and their ability to hire.” Another question centered on development along the Rte 146 corridor. Rep. Joe McKenna acknowledged that the Blackstone Valley has “a lot of land along 146 and that Sutton & Douglas are in that corridor, adding that there is a need for both infrastructure and engaging Town officials.” He is aware that there is “local resistance to economic development.” Yet, homeowners see their property taxes go up “year after year.” Rep. Dave Muradian gave a challenge to the members of the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce by inviting them to become “more active in the dialog.” He hopes continued on page 6
