15th Annual BVCC Home & Business Expo

Free CPR Course sponsored by Uxbridge Rotary The Rotary Club of Uxbridge has announced plans to sponsor the first in a series of CPR Classes that will be given by the Uxbridge Fire Department free of charge for local residents of the Blackstone Valley.

CPR Instruction will be given by Uxbridge Fire Department EMTs under the guidance of Fire Chief, William Kessler and Deputy Fire Chief, Tom Dion. The training will take place at the Uxbridge Fire Department located at 25 South Main Street, Uxbridge. If you are interested in attending this CPR Class, please call the Fire Department at 508-278-2787 to register. Class size is limited and space will be reserved on a first come, first served basis.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique that is useful in many emergencies, including heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped. According to the American Heart Association, the difference between doing something and doing nothing could save someone's life. When a heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage within a few minutes and a person can die within eight to ten minutes. CPR can keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until more definitive medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm.

Community Care, is an employment and recovery community for individuals who have a history of mental illness that reside in the Blackstone Valley. The Pancake Breakfast is the community’s biggest fundraiser and gives the public the opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal while helping a worthwhile project. Breakfast to help benefit developmentally disabled Russell and Kelly Trottier will present a Charity Breakfast Fundraiser, taking place at the Knights of Columbus Hall 77 Prescott Rd. Whitinsville on Saturday, March 2nd.

In recent years, our society, particularly here in the Blackstone Valley, has made great strides in helping children and adults with developmental disabilities to become truly part of our community. Many are becoming productive citizens helping to support themselves and live independently. None of this would have happened without the caring and commitment of leaders in our communities who have supported education, research and support services.

The Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress (MDSC) and the Criterion Early Learning Center of Whitinsville strive to support and enable kids and adults alike to be a part of the everyday communities in which they live. The Trottier’s would like to invite you to participate in a breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, March 2 from 8 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Participation might include attending, making a donation, and/or offering something as a raffle prize. Proceeds from the breakfast and raffles will be split between the two organizations.

On a very personal level, the Trottier’s know what these organizations do for the Blackstone Valley. Their son, Colin was diagnosed with Down syndrome 10 days after birth. “My wife and I were saddened and disappointed at first. We know we need to be our child’s biggest advocates, and realize that even we can make a difference within this community. These organizations have played a vital role in Colin’s development. There are a number of other families in our area who need our help and would greatly appreciate your support.”

On March 2nd, The Trottier’s will be hosting their first annual breakfast fundraiser. Trottier says, “Admission is free, although we will welcome donations of any amount. A group of dedicated volunteers will be serving breakfast and selling raffles tickets. The Mumford Council #365 Knights of Columbus of Whitinsville has generously donated the council hall at 77 Prescott Road. In order to put on this event, we are seeking donated food and raffle items. Any food or raffle item donations would be much appreciated, however modest the amount. Your generosity will go a long way in helping our family and friends with developmental disabilities to be active members of the Blackstone Valley community. In return for your generosity, the name of your company will appear on our event signs, t-shirts and advertisements.”

Uxbridge Community Gardens Gears Up For Spring The deadline for submitting an application for a 2013 Community Garden is March 8th. Plans are well under way for a second season of the highly successful program. “We have filled nearly all of the open garden spaces in the areas that were worked last year”, noted Barbara Hall, UCG Chairman. “Our intention is to plow, harrow and stake out another row of gardens, bringing the number of available plots to 80 for the coming spring.”

Any Uxbridge resident who would like a garden for 2013 may download an application and release form from the UCG page on the Town of Uxbridge web site. Applications can also be picked up at the Uxbridge Town Hall, the Uxbridge Public Library or the Uxbridge Senior Center. Completed applications, release forms and payment should be mailed to the UCG at Uxbridge Town Hall, 21 South Main Street, Uxbridge, MA 01569 by March 8th. The cost of Community Garden space is $20 for one 20’x30’ plot and $40 for a double (40’x 30’) plot.

Gardeners who had UCG plots in 2012 should remit their payment by the March 8 deadline in order to insure the renewal of their garden space.

Gardeners new to the program will be contacted in late March with garden plot assignments and addi-

tional information. The official Opening Day for the UCG this season is Saturday, April 20.

Volunteers for the People First Food Pantry tripled their UCG space in the fall in order to grow and donate a greater quantity of fresh garden produce for the Pantry this year. If you would like to work in the Pantry garden, or would like to help by starting seeds of tomatoes, peppers or other crops for the Pantry, please email uxbridgecommunitygardens@charter.net as soon as possible.

UCG was designated an official Committee of the Town of Uxbridge by the Uxbridge Fall Town Meeting in November 2012. The Community Gardens are totally organic; the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides is strictly prohibited.

Funding for UCG is provided solely by community sponsors and private donors. The UCG are operated by volunteers and by the gardeners themselves, who participate in several Work Days throughout the season. For more information refer to the Ground Rules and Organic Gardening Guidelines on the UCG page of the town web site.

The Blackstone River Coalition (BRC) is in need of volunteer waterquality monitors in the Worcester area to help sample Tatnuck Brook, Beaver Brook, Tilly Brook, Sewall Brook, O’Hara Brook, the Middle River, Flint Pond, and Leesville Pond. These sites occur within the headwaters region of the Blackstone River watershed.

The BRC recruits and trains citizen volunteers to participate in the Blackstone River Coalition watershedwide volunteer water quality monitoring program. The goal of this long-running program is to gather information about the current status of, and longterm changes in, the health of the Blackstone River watershed. This information helps policy makers, state officials, and concerned citizens in their actions to make the Blackstone River cleaner.

Cats should be brought in a carrier between 11:00 AM and Noon. Dogs, on a leash, can be brought from Noon to 1:00 P.M. The cost is $15 (cash only). Uxbridge municipal employees participate in discrimination prevention training Municipal government supervisors from Uxbridge participated in a fourday Discrimination Prevention Trainthe-Trainer seminar, held October 1718 and 24-25 at the Free Public Library in Northborough. The Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA), Uxbridge’s property and casualty insurance provider, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Commission against Discrimination (MCAD), offered the training free of charge to the participating communities as a membership benefit.

The comprehensive training was designed to provide MIIA members with a model discrimination prevention training curriculum and the skills they need to effectively train their municipal managers, supervisors and line staff.

The course covered disparate treatment, sexual and other forms of discriminatory harassment, reasonable accommodation, and employees’ responsibilities to address discrimination.

Becky Shuster, Director of Training for the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination said, “By offering a top-notch train-the-trainer program to municipalities’ senior managers and personnel administrators, MIIA is playing an invaluable role in preventing and addressing discrimination across the Commonwealth. The course graduates will have tremendous impact as they deliver training to their towns’ employees for years to come.�

During the interactive training, participants experienced a model municipal discrimination prevention training pro-

gram, had an opportunity to deliver segments of the curriculum, and received feedback from experienced trainers. Participants learned how to roll out the program in their own communities, including how to tailor the curriculum, liability issues, and practical strategies for implementation. “Although we have not had reported incidents here in Uxbridge, we feel it is important to get out in front of the issue and provide our employees with such crucial information,� said Uxbridge Town Manager Sean Hendricks. “We appreciate having the train-the-trainer format with MIIA so that we can offer this important curriculum to our busy staff members here at a convenient location.�

As a prerequisite, Uxbridge supervisors also participated in a half-day training focusing on Preventing and Addressing Workplace Discrimination held October 1 at the Marlborough Courtyard Marriott. Through this training, participants learned about prevention of and appropriate response to issues of potential discrimination, including discriminatory harassment, as well as the importance of developing an internal policy and communicating it to all employees. The training session explored situations that should trigger the duty to investigate, and how to ensure discrimination laws are enforced throughout the workplace. “Reducing a community’s risk takes many forms, including preventing discrimination,� said Stanley J. Corcoran, Executive Vice President, MIIA,

“Because of the diverse nature of their workforces and their responsibility to the taxpayers, cities and towns are particularly interested in staying on top of the latest of laws and court actions relative to discrimination. MIIA’s training session gives them those updates and reinforces existing regulations thus reducing the risk of an expensive lawsuit.�

Massachusetts employers, including municipalities, cannot discriminate against current or prospective employees based on race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, criminal record (inquiries only), handicap (disability), mental illness, retaliation, sexual harassment, sexual orientation, genetics, and active military. Upon completion of these and other MIIA risk- and loss-prevention programs, participating communities are eligible to receive insurance premium credits through the MIIA Rewards Programs thereby reducing property and casualty insurance costs.

Animal Disaster Team Celebrates 10 Years of Service The Central Massachusetts Disaster Animal Response Team (CMDART, Inc. ) is celebrating its 10th year of service to the 65 towns and cities of Central Massachusetts by hosting a special celebration event from 3-7, March 24th, at the Sterling First Church, Meetinghouse Rd, Sterling.

The event will feature special guest speakers, who will offer the public and responders some tips about how to manage animals at stressful times. The program will also present an overview of the past 10 years of service, visions

of the future for disaster services, an appreciation ceremony for volunteers and contributors, a children’s presentation, and a dinner. Animal control, Emergency Management, state, and other animal disaster organizations will be among the special guests.

Included in the presentation will be a formal thanks to contributors who have supported the mission over the past 10 years. We recently received a large equipment grant from the Central Region Homeland Security Advisory Council to aid public safety prepared-

“Whether it be providing emergency animal sheltering near human sheltering sites or equipment and emotional support following a fire, animal disaster services in New England are growing”, according to JoAnn Griffin, President and Team Director for CMDART. The 10th annual celebration is a petfriendly event. Only well-mannered pets without aggression will be allowed. You must RSVP yourself and your pet if you plan to attend with your animal. The event is being sponsored in part by contributions from the Pet Rock Festival Committee, the Dunleavy family of Douglas, and from contributions from individuals who will attend. The fee is $10 in advance and $13 at door.

In light of recent, broad spectrum storms that have affected Massachusetts, the Central Massachusetts Disaster Animal Response Team, Inc. (CMDART), will be ramping up training to increase the number of trained animal disaster responders.

“Recent storms have compromised so many communities that it makes it difficult to insure the number of responders needed to cover the area, “ said JoAnn Griffin, President and Team Director for CMDART. “Many nonprofit organizations are facing a shortage of volunteers because of work demands and illness. But when you run a disaster team and a critical need is there, you have to be able to respond.

We have to increase the number of our dedicated volunteers.”

Those interested in joining the team to help out at various levels, should contact membership@cmdart.org or visit the website at www.cmdart.org at the volunteer page. To sign up for an Introductory course that offers an overview of the team and its service requirements, contact the registrar at training@cmdart.org. Courses will be offered in those communities, or regions, with the most registration and interest. CMDART aids municipalities which seek to comply with the Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards Act (PETS ACT). This law, established in October 2006, requires local and state emergency preparedness authorities to include household pets and service animals in their evacuation plans. Animals affected by disasters can include small and large animals such as pets livestock and exotics.

Band with local ties to open for Johnny Winter Spare Parts Band will be opening for four time Grammy Nominee, Three time Grammy Winner, Rock Legend, and Blues Hall of Fame member Johnny Winter, for the third time on Friday, March 22nd at Mill Street Brews in Southbridge.

Spare Parts Band is a Contemporary Blues / Rock band based in Southbridge and features two Uxbridge residents.

Spare Parts Band formed in 2008 with Bass player Paul Douglas of Mendon Street as one of three founding members. In 2012, Keyboard player, Mike Benedict, of Hazel Street, joined the band.

Jim LaFlamme (Southbridge) on Lead Guitar / Lead Vocals and Jack Santimaw (Oxford) on Drums are the other two original members. In 2011 they were joined by Dave Hamelin (Belchertown) on Guitar / Lead Vocals / Harp.

Quest for the Eastern Cougar presentation "# ! "

The cougar one roamed free and wild throughout the Northeast until the late 1800’s when they were practically eradicated. Local wildlife officials declare them extinct, yet there have been sightings as recent as last spring when a 140 lb. male was struck and killed in Milford, CT. Robert Tougias, a nature author and wildlife expert, will discuss the history and future of the Eastern Cougar in a slide presentation at the Uxbridge Library on Thursday, April 4th at 7 pm and debate the issue of reintroducing cougars back into our woodlands.

Claflin Hill season continues in March with two great concerts jnacki has engaged a number of the finest operatic voices in New England to appear with the orchestra for this “highlights” program, including Baritone David Murray, who has appeared frequently with Claflin Hill over the past decade, and was also a star of the former Boston Academy of Music Opera company.

Family symphony concert . . . .

The annual Claflin Hill “Family Symphony Concert” will take place on Sunday afternoon, March 24th at 3:00 p.m. at Milford Town Hall.

A growing perennial favorite, this concert is designed to be accessible for families with young children, with a one-hour program of shorter selections.

This concert event also features an “Instrument Petting Zoo” before and after the concert, where audience members get to try out the various orchestral instruments with the assistance of CHSO musicians.

This season’s Family Concert is entitled “Gypsy Whimsy”, and features

The Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra, based in Milford, continues its’ 2012-13 concert schedule in March with two exciting and diverse program concepts. chso symphony series . . . .

The Claflin Hill Symphony presents “A Night at the Opera” on Saturday evening, March 9th at 7:30 p.m. in the Milford Town Hall Grand Ballroom.

CHSO Guest Conductor Thomas Hojnacki makes his annual appearance on the Claflin Hill podium, directing an evening of opera highlights and favorites, which includes favorite selections from Mozart’s operas, “Marriage of Figaro”, “Cosi fan Tutte,” and “The Magic Flute,” as well as Rossini’s ever popular “The Barber of Seville.” The “Barber of Seville” aria “Largo al Factotum” – which was made famous in the Bugs Bunny cartoon series, which will be included!

The entire second half of the program will be devoted to the second act of Guiseppe Verdi’s “La Traviata.” Ho-

music inspired by gypsy dance and culture from Eastern Europe. The concert will present a special guest soloist – thirteen year old Ian Mitchell on accordion, who will perform the Brahms Hungarian Dance No. 5 with the CHSO. Young Mitchell studies accordion with CHSO Musician, Emil Badae, and has recently won several regional competitions in accordion performance.

The Metrowest Youth Symphony Orchestra, (MetYSO), under the direction of Paul Surapine, will also perform in a “Side by Side” performance with the CHSO – their mentor orchestra.

The Board of MetYSO recently voted to merge into Claflin Hill, a change which will be completed by the end of the season, and become known henceforth as the Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies.

Other selections on the program will include the Gypsy Dance from the opera, “Carmen,” Georges Enesco’s “Roumanian Rhapsody No. 1” and

music from the Disney movie, “Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

Bicycle Recyle Event A Bicycle Recycle Event will take place in Uxbridge on March 16th. From 9 am to 1 pm at Saint Mary Church, located at 77 Mendon St., Uxbridge No Cost to drop off bicycle, any bike is a good bike, old/new, adult or kids.

Proceeds will go to Lynne Wood, a breast cancer survivor.

USS Corona Blood Drive Everyday, countless lives are in need of a blood transfusion. Everyday, people aren’t getting that blood transfusion. There are not enough donors for the amount of lives that need blood.

Every pint that is donated saves three lives. Working with the Red Cross, the USS Corona, the local chapter of the International Federation of Trekkers, is active in the community by giving back through charity work and community service, much like the Enterprise did under the lead of Kirk and Picard.

2013‘s Valentine’s Day Film: Safe Haven Submitted by Jacleen Charbonneau This past Valentine’s Day premiered one of Nicholas Sparks’ best movies yet: Safe Haven.

Based off of his book with the same name, this romantic film attracted couples with its thrilling storyline, sappy romance, and light-hearted humor. Who knew that feel-good humor and thrill could mesh so well together?

Katie, a woman with a rough past played by Julianne Hough, escapes to peaceful and serene Southport to start life over again with a clean slate.

Upon her arrival, she unexpectedly meets a gentle family man, played by Josh Duhamel, who eventually causes her to feel comfortable in trusting

others again. However, despite her fortunate circumstances in her new hometown, her past continues to haunt her, resulting in constant emotional chaos with herself, as well as with others. As time passes on, Katie begins to finally let go of her old self, but audiences will be surprised with a shocking twist that makes this film gripping and unforgettable.

Safe Haven ranked top in box office during opening weekend, and is frequently being compared to Dear John, another well done Sparks film and novel, by many. This general audience, according to RottenTomatoes.com, rated the emotional film 70% out of 100% despite its harsh critics, who marked it one star out of five for follow-

Safe Haven is an excellent film that will surely fill the theater with tears. If watched with a new set of eyes, without much comparison of the film to the novel, this film could even become a twotime movie trip. With Hough and Duhamel’s chemistry, one can clearly see a strong woman with a tough past starting to heal as her heart begins to trust again.

Museum of Work & Culture Appeal / Raffle announced The Museum of Work & Culture is now conducting its 2013 Annual Appeal and Raffle.

This is the Museum’s most important fundraiser of the year. It enables the Museum to offer educational programs to hundreds of students each year; to present quality exhibits to the community and to visitors from near and far and, to continue to serve as an important regional resource. The price of the raffle tickets are: $2 each, 3 for $5 or a sheet of 9 tickets for $15. Additional donations

are welcome. The Goal for this year’s appeal is $36,000.

I unfortunately had to be surrendered by my previous owner due to not getting the individual attention I crave so much. I lived in a household with 2 young boys under 10 and my 2 siblings but I showed signs of jealously to both. I am the type that likes a quiet environment but I may like to befriend another mellow dog like myself. I take some time to warm up to strangers and would make a great watch dog with my perky ears I can hear just about everything, especially my dog food bag being opened. I just LOVE food but I do need to be on a hypoallergenic diet. I know, it’s ironic, I am just about the most hypoallergenic dog as they come and my skin is sensitive to certain foods and products. Writers Group to meet at Uxbridge Library Whitinsville Library return to the Uxbridge Free Public Library to regale us with his new title, on Monday, March 25th at 7pm.

In 2007, a tattered life raft with three men were battered by the relentless 70foot waves during a tremendous storm in the Gulf Stream. Three other vessels were also caught, and only 6 survived. Four Coast Guardsmen risked their lives trying to rescue the badly injured, exhausted sailors, prompting the largest and most intense rescue in Coast Guard history. The program will include slides of the storm and actual footage of that rescue which promised to keep the audience on the edge of their seats!

Meet One Book One Community

The Uxbridge Free Public Library will offer a monthly Writers Group beginning Wednesday, March 20th at 7:00 p.m.

This group welcomes members of all levels of experience across a wide variety of genres. Writers can share short excerpts from their original work, receive tips on the writing life, explore publishing opportunities, and hear feedback from fellow writers.

Participants will also be given the option of a monthly writing challenge that will explore different forms such as short story, memoir, and poetry.

Social Library will host an Impressionist-style pastel painting adult art workshop, Monet’s Mirror, with award-winning pastel painter, Gregory John Maichack.

Come and produce your own unique pastel painting as Maichack shares his water garden photos taken on site at Monet’s home studio in Giverny, France. This pastel painting workshop serves sheer beginners to advanced adult artists and is free and open to the public. Registration is required due to limited seating.

This project is supported in part from a grant from the Northbridge Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

THINK SPRING...The young at Heart group will be taking a bus trip to the Boston flower show on Wed, March 13th. It's a perfect way to get out of the "winter doldrums"! It's really amazing the amount of seals you see.... they spend the winter in the waters right around Cuttyhunk and March is the perfect time to see them!

School News Great Backyard Bird Count at WCS

Students in the Whitinsville Christian School aftercare program, along with a kindergarten and a second grade class, recently took part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, occurring from February 15-18 and led by the Cornell Ornithology Lab and the National Audubon Society.

Metacomet Land Trust of Franklin, donated three birdfeeders and birdseed, enabling these students to take part in this exciting event. The bird count is a citizen scientist project in which people all over the world take note of the number of birds that come to their feeders on set days and submit the data to scientists at the Cornell Ornithology Lab and the Audubon Society. The scientists then use the data to get an understanding of how well bird populations are doing. The feeders were filled and hung in visible locations, and activities were made available that helped the students become more familiar with the birds who might be coming to the feeders.

STuDEnTS ConTRibuTE - The preschool and elementary students at Whitinsville Christian School recently completed a collection for the northbridge Food Pantry, resulting in approximately 1,000 food items being donated and delivered to the Pantry on February 15th. On February 8, 2010 Precious Ones opened its door with 7 children and 4 staff members. Today, just after celebrating 3 years in business, Precious Ones has recently enrolled its 70th child! The growth of the business, considering the struggling economy, has been nothing short of astonishing.

Owners Jeff and Deb May attribute the success of their Christian based group day care center to three things.

First, a dedicated and caring group of certified teachers and assistants. Dawn Ison, the Center Director says “I’m blessed and inspired to work with such a capable, committed, and loving team”. Precious Ones now employ 14 staff.

Finally, a belief in God’s providence. Jeff, who is also a Pastor says, “I believe God has His hand of blessing over Precious Ones.” The center provides teaching in Christian principles including a Monday morning chapel, music, crafts, fine and gross motor activities as well as age-appropriate cognitive, language, and social skills.

Not one to rest on past success, the Mays are looking to expand the business by opening another infant room in April, and plan on continuing to grow the summer program and the schoolaged after school program which they launched in September.

Despite excitement of a growing business, the May’s have not lost sight of what is most valuable. Deb says, “It seems like just yesterday that we opened and now just 3 years later we have infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children”. Jeff adds, “The families we serve are looking for something different—something personal, loving, and very special. We are an extension of the home and we absolutely love the families and children at Precious Ones.” It’s all about the kids.

Uxbridge Public Schools are spotlighting the music department by hosting the 6th annual Music and Meatballs dinner concert on March 12th (snow date March 13th) in the Whitin Middle School cafetorium. Seating will open at 5:30PM and the dinner and concert will begin promptly at 6:00 PM. This fund-raising event will feature the McCloskey Middle School and Uxbridge High School Jazz Bands and the “Spartones”- the a capella vocal group from Uxbridge High School.

The Music and Meatballs dinner concert is a ticketed event with a limited

first-served basis. It is recommended that you get your order in soon! Any remaining tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and senior citizens.

There is a $25.00 maximum cost per family and toddlers will eat for free.

The menu for the evening is: Salad, Bread sticks, Ziti (with or without sauce) and meatballs. Coffee, Fruit punch and water will be available.

Desserts will also be served. In addition, there will be several baskets raffled off during the evening. Raffle tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00

Employability Workshop offered to local youths NEW this SPRING, the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation is offering a youth Employability Workshop for high school students over April vacation. Starting Tuesday, April 16th through Thursday, April 18th from 8:30am to 12:30pm at the Milford Federal Credit Union, students will prepare and practice sharpening their Employability skills and learn techniques for landing a job this summer and after high school graduation. The program will cover such topics as identifying natural strengths and talents and

how to communicate them through form applications, resumes and cover letters. Students will then practice interview techniques both face-to-face and over the phone, the follow-up process and the best tools to use when hunting for a job effectively without losing motivation. Finally, topics on work place etiquette, time management, setting long-term goals, and financial literacy will wrap up the last class. Q.C.C. opens new wing on main campus On January 25th, Quinsigamond Community College officially opened the newly renovated North Wing on its main campus at 670 West Boylston Street, Worcester. In response to overcrowded conditions as well as sobering statistics on students entering college with less-than adequate math skills, QCC President Gail Carberry saw an opportunity to further her vision to “shorten the distance” making higher education possible for all and feed the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education pipeline with innovative mathematics programming through the strategic and timely renovation of this space. Today, the North Wing houses seven state-ofthe-art developmental math labs and classrooms consisting of a new Math Education Center, general purpose classrooms and TRIO Student Support Services space.

The North Wing was originally a chapel for Assumption College, complete with museum quality, 15’ x 5’ stained glass windows, until QCC purchased the property in the early 60’s, using it as office and storage space.

Once the decision was made to renovate, Pfeiffer Richardson Architects from Boston took over the design with lead architect and President, Preston Richardson at the helm. Construction took approximately one year under the direction of Emilio Licciardi, President of Federal Construction in Lynnfield.

At the well-attended dedication ceremony, QCC President Gail Carberry welcomed attendees and thanked QCC Foundation partners, local and state officials in attendance including Congressman James McGovern, State Senator Michael Moore, State Rep. James O’Day and MA Commissioner of Higher Education, Richard Freeland for their efforts on behalf of her vision as well as QCC math faculty for their dedication to the critical task of improving math competency. As a vital component of STEM education, mathematics is the base that fuels other STEM disciplines. These disciplines, in turn become sought-after, high paying jobs that support the economy.

CAuGHT in THE MiDDLE - Recently every Frederick W. Hartnett Middle School 7th grade student (142 total) was treated to a special day marking the mid-point of the school year, or the middle of the school year, by celebrating their status of being the "middle child." The day started with a commitment to service as 7th grade students and staff volunteered their time at the elementary school where they started in District 6 years ago. (Students either attended

John F. Kennedy Elementary School in blackstone or Millville Elementary in Millville.) The second half of the day saw seventh grade students spend the day learning about the high school and spending time with blackstone Millville Regional High School juniors and seniors. The 7th graders were treated to lunch with the Superintendent of Schools, Ms. Kimberly b. Shaver-Hood.

Jack and the Beanstalk Production at U.H.S.

“Hearts of Kindness” in Uxbridge Schools The Uxbridge Public Schools and The Coalition for a Community of Caring sponsored, “Hearts of Kindness.” for the 2nd year. Over 150 felt hearts were created and decorated by youth in Uxbridge. Collection boxes were set up in the schools and Town library. youth reflected on their lives and wrote down an act of kindness they did for someone else and tucked it inside the heart. The hearts were then strung along the Town Common as a Valentine’s Day “Thankyou” back to the community for helping to take care of them.

Research has shown that completing intentional Acts of Kindness increases happiness and feelings of belonging.

This leads people to be more helpful, kinder to others, able to think more clearly, and positively influence others.

This project is one of many that The Coalition sponsors to help promote the Uxbridge School’s Community of Caring Program, who’s core values of Respect, Responsibility, Trust, Caring, and Family, empower people to be responsible and caring members of their community. The Coalition brings together local service agencies, faith

Think you know the story of Jack and the Beanstalk? Tired of the same old portrayal of Jack as the tragic hero with no consideration of his ineptitude?

Well 11 student actors at Whitinsville Christian School will be challenging those views as they perform the original play Jacks in a Beanstalk. The play is written and directed by WCS senior Annika Schultz and will be performed on March 9th at 7pm in the Krull Memorial Auditorium.

The play demonstrates how one story can be interpreted many ways, as two friends debate the heroism (or not) in the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. A child witnessing this debate believes the story is real, creating three drastically different versions of the classic story.

The play is the culmination of months of hard work on Annika’s senior capstone project at Whitinsville Christian High School.

Annika has already written a number of one-act plays and this is her first full length production. In the fall she will be going to Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts to study Creative Writing and Theatre and hopes to pursue her dream of becoming a playwright.

Boucher Energy announces new Aeroseal Technology The new technology is used to seal air duct leaks, saving consumers an estimated 25 to 40 percent in heating and cooling costs. The new technology allows Boucher Energy Systems technicians to quickly pinpoint and seal air duct leaks. Boucher Energy Systems Inc., a certified Aeroseal contractor, is the first to address the sealing technology locally.

Fattman reports on Welfare Assistance

by Ryan Fattman Recently, the House of Representatives took up a supplemental budget for the current fiscal year. During the near eight hour debate, a great deal of discussion initiated over a further amendment I filed. My amendment sought to bring accountability to the gross abuses exposed at the Department of Transitional Assistance with welfare benefits: • The DTA lost track of 47,087 households receiving welfare benefits • 19,000 EBT beneficiaries were unable to be located to a tune of $91 million in taxpayer dollars.

• Since 2010, $53 million in food stamp and welfare payments were overpaid to “ineligible recipients.”

The DTA’s consistent failures in oversight of these above-mentioned welfare programs proved the idiom that “someone was asleep at the switch.” I proposed allowing the watch dogs of Beacon Hill, including the Inspector General, State Auditor and Attorney General, to create an oversight action plan to address fraud, abuse and overpayment of benefits by April 1, 2013, and to be implemented no later than 45 days later.

The amendment received more bipartisan support than any other amendment proposed during debate, with 14 Democrats and 29 Republicans, voting in favor. While my amendment did not pass, it received the attention and support of many media and blog outlets.

More importantly, it received the support and attention of some of my constituents who urged me to write this letter.

Everyday, I hear from the people I represent on Beacon Hill. More often than not, I find myself speaking to a constituent who just lost their job, and is applying for temporary assistance for the first time in their life to help them get back on their feet.

Temporary welfare assistance, like EBT, can be a helpful tool. However, it can also be the source for great frustration amongst a public sick and tired of reading headlines of abuse. I am frustrated as well.

Despite the fact my amendment did not pass, you have my commitment to continue to fight for accountability at the DTA and to end EBT abuse. Last year, I was proud to co-sponsor the amendment which stopped EBT cards from being used for lottery tickets, tobacco products, alcohol, jewelry, cruises, and tattoos. This legislative session I’ve filed two bills that will aid this effort, first, requiring a photo identification on EBT cards, exempting those who are disabled and unable to do their own shopping. And second, an annual re-application process for EBT benefits as opposed to the watered down, automatic renewal that currently occurs. Both bills have received bipartisan co-sponsorships, and I am optimistic about their prospects of becoming law.

Sports Shorts Stolte enters prestigious RACE 101 as youngest in his class Our Lady of the Valley 8th grader hoping RaCe 101 helps find speedy success

“We focus on our own needs and goals at the school,” said Stolte. “Everyone takes something different from the course, and I can’t wait to go back next month.”

RACE 101 is located in Denver, North Carolina, and students travel there three times during the year for in-class sessions. The rest of the program is taught online and through experiences at the race track.

Daniel Stolte returned home from the prestigious RACE 101 school in North Carolina after completing the first weekend with the class of 2013 just in time to return to Our Lady of the Valley School as an 8th grader.

Stolte was one of just eight racers across North America chosen to attend the program designed for aspiring race car drivers in North Carolina.

The curriculum includes technical components along with marketing and public relations skills – all vital areas to achieving success in racing.

“I am super excited for this school and what it can offer for me,” says Daniel. “All of this information will get me to where I need to be in my racing career.”

Stolte started racing at six years old in quarter midgets. He achieved success competing in the same class that launched the careers of NASCAR greats Jeff Gordon and Joey Logano. In 2012 Stolte moved up to high powered Legends cars where he earned Rookie of the year honors.

He is younger than his seven classmates at RACE 101, but the school is designed to cater to racers of various ages and experience levels.

Hikers enjoy Sutton’s Purgatory Chasm Brisk, beautiful day draws people to chasm Despite the chilly temps, 50 people, including cub scouts from Douglas, turned out recently for an invigorating, two-hour guided hike through the woods of Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton. Susan Thomas, Project Assistant with the Blackstone River Watershed Association (BRWA) explained the history of the reservation before leading the adventuresome hikers along Charlie’s Loop where they learned about the plants and wildlife living there ranging from chestnut oaks and elephant-ear lichen, to red foxes and pileated woodpeckers. The crowd experienced the classic smell of the wintergreen plant and played detective with animal tracks seen in the snow. A highlight of the outing were the frozen cascades at Little Purgatory where Ms. Thomas discussed glacial potholes and encouraged the hikers to return in the summer to experience the emerald beauty of this spot on a hot summer day.

On the return trip, the hikers paralleled the Chasm and learned about past and current theories of the Chasm’s geologic formation. Examples of the Chasm’s rocks and minerals were on display back at the visitor center along with hot drinks and cookies. This past December two Blackstone Valley Pop Warner cheerleading teams competed on two different days (Dec. 4 & Dec 6) at the National Pop Warner Cheerleading Competition. The Pee Wee team, Large Level 3, consisted of 30 cheerleaders, ages 10-12. They placed 6th. The second team, the Midget Team, Medium Level 2, with 20 cheerleaders, ages 13-15, placed 2nd. Most of the kids are from Uxbridge and Northbridge.

Both teams had to compete in 3 competitions and place either 1stor 2nd to move on before making it to Nationals. For Central Mass., both teams placed 1st; New England Qualifiers, both teams placed 1st and New England Regional, Pee Wee placed 1stand Midgets, 2nd place.

Once the teams qualified for Nationals, they had 3 weeks to raise over $40,000 to send 60 cheerleaders and coaches to Orlando, Florida.

They came up short of that lofty goal, but some parents generously paid the cheerleaders’ airfare.

Illness, unfortunately, struck the Pee Wee team with the flu when they arrived and half the team was sick with fevers the day of the competition. However, with their “We can Do It!” spirit, “Not one of them quit and all 30 competed that day,” according to Pee Wee’s Head Coach Michelle Ciliberto. The Midget’s Head Coach is Melissa Bettencourt.

Since BVPW’s first season in 2006, 4 teams have gone to the Nationals.

For those ages 5-15 interested in taking part in the future, sign-up schedule is on Sunday, March 3, from 4:30-7:30 pm at the Polish Hall, 167 Mendon St., Uxbridge.

The most precious gift you have may not be evident to you That is, we have a unique gift of a modifiable body to suit our needs. For quite some time now I have been calling exercise a gift. We can mold our body to suit our needs. Where in nature does this happen...only in humans.

When someone gives you a gift, it's meant to enhance your life somehow. you would not think of not opening your gift, you in fact want to enjoy it.

The gift of exercise then escapes the majority of people, rather than use it to improve ones life and health, many choose to not accept their gift. They choose to let their body's wither away slowly without activating their gift.

They chose to live a life based on chronological years, rather than a biological modifiable health driven life.

Why were we given this modifiable body; my guess is so that as we traverse the life we choose or as we face what's ahead of us down unknown roads we will have the ability to adjust our body's to best suit our challenges. This is the miracle of exercise. yes, a big comment, but very appropriate if you want to really think about it.

Guided Winter Hike at River Bend Farm Join the Blackstone River Watershed Association on Saturday, March 23rd from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm as Ranger Chuck Arning of the National Park Service leads us on a hike at River Bend Farm in Uxbridge. The program is entitled "A Changed Landscape Indians, Irish & Immigrants, So How Does Climate Change Fit In? - A Walk through the Blackstone River & Canal Heritage State Park. " After giving an introduction at the River Bend Visitor Center, Ranger Chuck will guide participants through the varied landscape, with Goat Hill Lock or Look-out Rock as possible destinations. Along the way, you will see and talk about the changes this area has experienced and relate it to its changing nature as you talk about climate change.

So what exercise is best? I'm jumping right into it without a lot of explanations.

Simply stated, Their are two modalities of exercise that working together will help you achieve optimum health .

I see people all the time with no real focus, just going thru the motions.

The real purpose of PROGRESSIVE STRENGTH TRAINING, and that's what it should be, progressive, and structured, is to strengthen the body head to toe. A healthy strong body does so many wonderful things, and allows you to do so much more with your life, Remember this, strength trainings purpose is to give you a strong solid muscular base of which to work from.

Translation, you should build your

body and strength levels several plateaus higher than your present state. you need to work on that issue alone, before, or along side with Aerobics training.

If you jump around from exercise to exercise, with no plan, no progression you will not build your body nearly close as you can with proper strength training.

Once you have reached a sound strong body developed from progression of strength training, then you can develop your maintenance plan of exercise. And then you can focus on your aerobics conditioning. As we age, muscle building becomes empirical, for years of neglect has severely compromised ones muscle tissue. No one is

immune to this malady. One only needs to visit nursing homes and assisted living facilities to see muscle devastation, and it's consequences. Minds as sharp as a tack, but with weak, frail body's, that should never have happened....

They are prisoners within their own body's. So sad.

We are all so lucky to have this modifiable body, but you need to open and use this fine gift of nature.

Consider for a moment, that your body and muscles were not adaptable. you would be sick and injured constantly. you would not be able to function in your daily lives.

Broken bones, muscle, ligament and tendon tares would render you non functioning.

For instance if some of my friends and myself were in the local supermarket where we worked and an unfamiliar employee passed by wearing a jacket and tie, one of us might ask: “Who the heck was that? If the occasion warranted it, the reply could be something like: “Oh him? That’s the new Big Cheese”. As I say, that

The Big Cheese on Display not being as crowded as it normally is, I had a little more freedom to look around. I again spotted the sign and for some reason decided to read it. By the time I finished the short, descriptive narrative, I was not only amazed; I was astounded. The short description was telling about an event that was forthcoming in the market the next December. The affair involves “dissecting” the “largest cheese ever shipped to the United States”. That was when I realized that the sign I was reading was attached to a crate that actually held the monstrous delicacy.

According to what I read, the “Big Cheese” is Provolone, and was made by the Auricchio cheese making company, which is the “largest producer of provolone in Italy”. The “chunk” at Mazzaro’s weighs in at 1100 lbs, is at least twelve feet long (in its present

location twelve feet high) and well over a foot thick. Encased in wax to preserve it as well as keep it firm, it had already aged two years before it arrived at Mazzaro’s direct from Italy. It will add another year of curing before being cut up in December 2013. The trip from the “old country” is a story in its self. VERy CAREFULLy its journey begins with a truck ride from where it has been curing, to a commercial harbor where it is even more carefully loaded into the hold of a ship.

Staff members at Mazzaro’s informed me that it is shipped by boat verses air for two major reasons: The first is the astronomical cost of air freight, and secondly, fear that jostling around in the stratosphere might cause the cheese to break even though it is protected some what in the crate it is shipped in.

Also, of course there is no big rush to get it to St. Petersburg. It won’t be cut up until December next after another year of curing. The ship arrives in New Jersey, and then comes the second trip by truck, going south to Florida (again - very carefully). It arrives at its final destination in around three weeks after leaving Italy. At that point, the cheese is loaded onto furniture dollies and brought into the store. There it is raised by a chain fall to a vertical position just outside the entrance to the cheese and wine cellar where it will remain until cutting time. What an amazing sight.

I’ll bet all those that come out for the occasion can’t wait to taste what is certainly a novelty.

Another interesting piece of information I garnered chatting with employees in the store, is that once the cheese is cut up, it most likely will be all sold

within a week or so! This is more than just a guess or a hope: The store has done this type of celebration in the past, and that is just about how long the cheese lasted. Just that statement alone reveals the incredible popularity the market enjoys. I have never been in the rather small structure that houses all the goodies, that it wasn’t crowded with patrons purchasing their favorites.

Shelves in the store are loaded with countless items including countless imported goodies (oils, pasta, cold cuts, and of course some of the finest wine and cheese to be found anywhere).

Also available fresh made on the premises pastries and pastas. Also available are high quality meat cuts, coffees, dairy items, delicatessen items and much more. The small building is literally crammed full of gourmet Italian cuisine, and also items from other European countries.

From what we have observed in just about all our visits, the areas that are the most popular are the deli counter, the bakery and the coffee shop.

Normally there is a wait of I would estimate 20-30 minutes to get what you came after at the deli. The coffee shop is equally crowded. However, it doesn’t seem to turn away many customers.

It often seems like just one big family meeting at the market. People stand around and chat while waiting.

Anyway, getting back to the 1100 lb Big Cheese, I wonder what Mazzaro’s will do next year for an encore. I mean, just how big can cheeses grow? We’ll see…

expression could be applied just about any place in society where hierarchy was evident. Of course the military had their own system of authority recognition. I will pass on those as most of their names wouldn’t be printable here.

Although the term “big cheese” may have gone its way as a means of recognizing those with authority, it still is in our vocabulary. Recently the words “Big Cheese” took on new meaning for us, in a way I would never have expected: Literally! Peg and I were shopping in our favorite “Italian food specialist’s market” Mazzaro’s in St. Petersburg Florida, when we passed a small sign that gave information about some kind of cheese that was – or would be – for sale. Being moved along by the usual crowd of shoppers, neither of us paid much attention to what it was trying to tell us, until a later trip.
