Survey will confirm community needs “There is no better way for an organization to plan for the future than to listen to its customers,” commented Deb Hinkle, Director of the Uxbridge Free Public Library. “So as a first step in our comprehensive Long Range Plan process we are asking everyone who has an opinion about what a library should be to tell us what they think.”

A short survey has been designed to ask community members of all ages for help in determining the goals for the Uxbridge Library over the next five years. There are several ways to participate; take the survey online at www.uxbridgelibrary.org. at the Uxbridge Free Public Library or Uxbridge Senior Center.

The survey period begins on September 1st and continues throughout the month of September to allow everyone a chance to be heard. It takes just a few minutes to answer the questions and the survey is completely anonymous. So tell us

what you really think!

A Long Range Plan is required periodically by the state of Massachusetts in order for a public library to be eligible for funds through the Library Services, Technology Act and the MA Public Library Construction Program. “Even if a Plan were not required, as a forwardthinking organization we want to know where we’re going and what steps it will take to get there,” said Barbara Hall, a library trustee, who is involved in the planning process. “We hope that our survey will begin to answer some of those important questions and that many members of the community will weigh in with their thoughts and suggestions.”

Recycle for Music Day On Saturday, September 8th the Uxbridge Friends of Music will hold its annual “Recycle for Music Day” at Saint Mary’s Church, 77 Mendon Street, in Uxbridge. Bring your cell phones, electronic items and appliances for electronic recycling!

Uniquely Uxbridge Day September 1st

By Travis Ann DoRosario On Saturday, September 1st, Uxbridge will be celebrating the Sixth Annual Uniquely Uxbridge Day, on the Town Common and Pout Pond. This day is to enjoy all the things that make Uxbridge a great community to live in! Part of what makes Uxbridge a fabulous community is how we support others in need. In 2016, we announced the creation of the UU Scholarship Fund. For the past two years, we were able to present graduating Uxbridge residents with monetary gifts towards their education. We hope to be able to continue this tradition.

The day starts at 9:00 a.m. on the Town Common. Admission is free, so come down, do some shopping, visit with the local crafters and artisans, and have the

kids take part in the Kidz Korner activities! The perennial favorite; pie eating contest will return at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Face painting and skill games are some of the fun activities that kids can enjoy in our Kidz Zone, on the North End of the Common.

This year, the crafter and vendor fair features some of the top local artisans in the area. If you want to get a start on your holiday shopping, now is the time!

Hand-blown glass, crochet items, handmade jewelry, doll clothes, primitives, wood décor, skin and personal care items are just a few of the crafters you will find. You will also be able to meet local business owners that focus on multimedia, performing arts, fitness, massage and of course, food.

After 3:00 p.m. head down to Pout Pond

for a gathering! Another perennial favorite, the cardboard boat race launches at 3:15 p.m. this year, you don’t want to miss it! Then sit back, enjoy the view, grab a bite to eat, and take part in a game of volleyball or tug of war. Raffles winners will be announced at 4:30 p.m.

Admission to the Pond will be free at that time. Uxbridge is a great town with many fantastic businesses, people and places to visit. Please come out on Saturday, September 1st and support our local families and our unique town.

Outlining the Northbridge Fitzpatrick looks forward to a new school year School Building Project Dear Editor,

Put your sandals, sneakers, and slippers away – the new school year is on the horizon. Stretch, smile and squeal if you must, but wait no longer to shop for your child’s back to school wardrobe and shape your "welcome back to school" pep talk; eager students will soon return to classrooms across the region. As Massachusetts makes the transition to the priorities of a new Commissioner of Education, the new school year presents new vistas every day, creating entirely new areas of inspiration and discovery for our students and those who lead them.

A productive school year requires the contributions of a supportive school

committee, talented teachers, devoted staff, and perceptive taxpayers who actively sustain the school system’s mission to plan, shape, and achieve student-earned success.

At the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District in Upton, we are in the midst of preparing the District’s annual report, which informs area citizens of our most recent activities and accomplishments. Consistent with past practice we shall highlight one of our graduates in this document.

This year's celebrant is a recent culinary arts grad whose circuitous journey included multiple detours with new information guiding each next step and her subsequent career plan. This student’s story displays an unrelenting

willingness to experiment until getting it right. In today's constantly changing economy, it illustrates an attribute of adaption we recognize as a twenty-first century soft skill. Like our student, school leaders, teachers, and students alike are encouraged to constantly challenge themselves while accepting any missteps along the journey.

With a willingness to adapt and evolve with changing times, Massachusetts school leaders have made our school systems the gold standard for the nation. I encourage both parents and teachers to recognize you have the ability to make a difference. May the new school year give you every opportunity to make that a reality.

By Joseph Strazzulla This is the first in a three part series outlining the process that the Town of Northbridge has undertaken in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) in planning and designing a new PreK-5 elementary school building. On June 27th the MSBA approved the project, promising $47 million in grant money to Northbridge.

Part I – Defining the Need The Northbridge School Building Committee has completed its design work on a $100 million dollar elementary school project. The project looks to build a new school building on the existing W.E. Balmer site that will house students from Prekindergarten through 5th grade. With help from Owners Project Manager Joel Seeley, the design team from Dore &

Whittier and Construction Managers Fontaine Brothers, the Committee has completed their Schematic Design which has already been approved by the MSBA, who promises a reimbursement of $47 million.

Back in 2009, the Town of Northbridge began submitting “Statements of Interest” to the MSBA in hopes of being accepted into the core reimbursement program for new school construction, renovation, or renovation/addition. The most recent submission was received and approved by the MSBA and the School Building Committee began the Feasibility Phase of the project in the Spring of 2016.

The initial design went through more than ten versions. The MSBA’s approval granted the town an opportunity to consider combining Northbridge Elementary, W. E. Balmer, and grade 5 from the middle school. Ultimately, after considering many of the possible combinations, the building committee agreed on a final design that combined all three options. School building committee Chairman Joe Strazzulla said “It was a long and detailed process. We held community forums to get feedback and in the end this design is the best solution for the needs of the students and our town”.

The new design aims to replace two rapidly deteriorating buildings. “There is no question that both Northbridge Elementary and Balmer have deficiencies that need to be addressed” said Dr. Catherine Stickney, Superintendent of the Northbridge Public Schools. “We have worked closely with our community to make sure we have addressed the educational needs of our students in this design” she said.

Of the greatest concerns are the physical space restrictions and lack of accessibility that both schools face. Northbridge’s two elementary schools are undersized according to the MSBA’s guidelines. As part of the agreement the town must increase its overall square footage to meet those MSBA guidelines.

“Our traditional spaces are limiting as we try to incorporate student collaboration and 21st century learning opportunities” said Stickney. Both buildings have aging mechanical systems and technology that exists is not sufficient to keep up with the growing needs.

Last summer, the committee held open “Educational Visioning” sessions where teachers, parents, staff, committee members, and even students participated in developing a vision for this new school.

One important takeaway was that there would be cost savings in the long run by combining the two schools. “The MSBA gave us the opportunity to address two buildings at once while also bringing the 5th grade back to the elementary level where it belongs” said Strazzulla. When asked about the proposed PreK-5 building Strazzulla answered “Passing up the opportunity to apply this reimbursement rate to one building would be irresponsible, if we were to just address Balmer we would be left with the same problems at Northbridge Elementary, this option is by far the best option”. Work underway at Dog Park

By Travis Ann DoRosario Recently on a 3 Acre parcel atop of Sutton Street in Uxbridge, a small crowd of 30 people gathered to celebrate the Official groundbreaking of the Uxbridge Dog Park. guests included our four-legged friends as well who were eager to check out the future home of their new digs.

If you have been to the center of Uxbridge, you have probably noticed a large red thermometer for the Uxbridge Dog Park standing on the town common. Every few weeks, getting a new layer of paint, inching its way up to the goal of $25,000. Well, the goal was reached and the construction has begun on the project that is four years in the dreaming.

One of the many comments the Dog Park Committee often hear is "Isn't a dog park just a fenced-in yard"? Short answer is “ohhh nooooo”.

The Town of Uxbridge received a grant in the amount of $20,500 from the Stanton Foundation which allowed us to move forward with the design portion of the project. Berkshire Design group of Northampton, was awarded this contract and the results have been spectacular. It has been a year-long process to do a site analysis, survey the land and then come up with a design with features that were within the budget, as well as meeting the needs of what the committee was were

looking for. Once, the plan was finalized, the project was sent out to bid.

Numerous submissions came in for the project. Precise Paving, Inc. of Brimfield was awarded the contract to tackle this dream. The Uxbridge Dog Park Committee received nearly $200, 000 in grant money towards the construction costs for the project from the Stanton Foundation, and the work began within a few days. There will be paved walkways along the perimeter, benches, play mounds, shade structures, and a spacious parking area. For a committee that has been actively holding spaghetti dinners, paint parties, motorcycle runs, halloween parties, and selling commemorative bricks for the past few years, this groundbreaking ceremony truly hit the full range of emotions.

This entire process has required a great deal of fundraising, education, planning and effort, but the ultimate reward will be that the Blackstone Valley will have a special place where dogs and their families can run play and socialize. For this park to not only be beautiful, but amazing, they need motivated people to join their efforts. It is our hope that someone reading this will find the motivation to join this project and achieve this dream coming to fruition in the Blackstone Valley. The Whitin Community Center is pleased to announce that registration is open and underway for the 2018 UniBank greenway Challenge, the popular multi-segment competition now in its 18th year. The event will be held on Saturday, September 29th and will feature eight challenging segments which will take participants from the start line at Lincoln Woods State Park, North Parking Lot in Lincoln, RI through the Blackstone Valley to the finish line at the Whitin Community Center’s Whitin Park in Whitinsville, MA some 56 miles later. There will be 3 running segments (one a trail run), two paddling segments (one river and one lake course), two street bike rides, and a mountain bike segment. Teams can compete in the following categories: Individual Participant (Male or Female), 2 Person Team (Male, Female & Co-Ed), 3-4 Person Team (Male, Female & Co-Ed), and 5-8 Person Team (Male, Female, Co-Ed & Corporate).

The mission of the UniBank greenway Challenge is to promote the recreational quality of life in the Blackstone River Valley. A program of the Whitin Community Center, presented by UniBank and supported by other partner organizations, the greenway Challenge supports the development of new programs, purchase of additional equipment, and facility renovations for the members and guests of the Whitin Community Center (WCC). The WCC is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals and families and to building a strong community in the Blackstone Valley.

Each year, the greenway Challenge athletes run, paddle and bike on a course designed to bring them through one of the most beautiful and historic regions of New England, the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor located between Worcester, MA and Pawtucket, RI. Caregivers support group Friends of the Poor Walk announced offered at Senior Center The Uxbridge Senior Center, located at 36 South Main Street in Uxbridge, is proud to make available a new caregiver support group for those caring for a loved one with a diagnosis of dementia. Support groups are confidential meetings for caregivers of persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. You can learn more about the disease and meet others going through similar situations.

Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 12th from 1:00 pm-2:00 pm at the Senior Center. This group is free and open to all who are interested in receiving vital education about managing dementia care and aide in reducing stress and assist caregivers to cope. Our speaker will be Julie McMurray from the Alzheimer’s Association who will present Alzheimer’s Association Support & Services. This presentation is a brief overview about the disease, including risk factors and services that are available through the Alzheimer’s Association.

The group will conduct monthly Caregiver Support meetings, the second Wednesday of every month from 1:00 pm-2:00 pm starting in September. Speakers will be scheduled randomly throughout the year. The goals of the group will focus on creating a safe, supportive, confidential, and encouraging environment; educate and

inform; promote development of problem solving skills; encourage members to maintain their own physical and emotional health and respect individual differences.

Lisa Bernard, LSW, Director of the Uxbridge Senior Center and Terry Murray, Volunteer and Former Caregiver will be co-facilitating this group. Lisa and Terry have personal and professional experience working with persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia and also assisting their caregivers.

Connect to the great outdoors as they read short nature books as a group, followed by a fun outdoor activity. They conclude with a simple craft that relates to the stories they have read. The park interpreter will give background for each image, and will be available for questions & conversation. Saturday, September 1st & 15th at 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Takes place at the Pavilion near the entrance to the chasm. All necessary materials will be provided. Feel free to bring your own coloring books, tools, or other visual art projects too! An additional “kid’s table” will be set aside for small children. Wet weather will cancel.

• Skull Science: Many things can be learned about how an animal lives just by looking at its skull. At this educational and interactive display, find clues in skulls and bones about how different creatures survive & learn what it takes to call Purgatory Chasm your home. • Time Traveler Tour: Step back in time as you stroll to historic structures and geologic features at Purgatory Chasm. You will discover evidence of ancient glaciers, uncover relics from Sutton’s earlier days, and can marvel at the craftsmanship of Purgatory Chasm’s staff from years that have long since passed. Monday, September 17th at 3:00-3:30 p.m.

• A Walk in the Park: Hiking trails are the heart of the park system and they provide great places for you to get into shape. New educators welcomed to Administrative Team Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Frank Tiano, is pleased to announce two new hires to the Uxbridge administrative team: Ms. Wendy Phillips, who has been chosen to be the next Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Accountability for the District, and Ms. Carla Squier, who will be the Assistant Principal at the Taft Early Learning Center.

“We are excited to welcome two quality educators and leaders to our district,” Dr. Tiano said. “They are both eager and excited to start, and I know that our students, staff, and entire community will benefit from their expertise and energy.”

Ms. Phillips was chosen from a strong pool of 30 applicants to replace the outgoing Director of Curriculum, Dr. Rich Drolet, and is quite eager to get started in Uxbridge. She will be joining Uxbridge from the Wakefield (MA) Public School District where she has been the 5-12 Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator for the past four years. Prior to that position, Ms. Phillips served in a variety of teaching and leadership positions in the Newburyport and Lowell Public School Districts, as well as serving as an Adjunct Professor at North Shore Community College.

BVAA Season begins

Ms. Phillips earned her Bachelor of Science with distinction from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and her Master of Education from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. She is currently working toward her Certificate of Advanced graduate Study in Educational Leadership at Salem State University.

Ms. Squier was chosen as finalist for the recently created Taft Assistant Principal position by Principal Marla Sirois and a team of Taft educators. She comes to Uxbridge with a diverse skill set and five years of leadership experience, most recently as a Special Education Team Chair for the Walpole School District. Ms. Squier holds a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Our Lady of the Elms and earned her Master of Science in Education from Simmons College. She also has completed the Advanced Training Program (applied behavior analysis) at Northeastern University.

“We appreciate the efforts of our screening committees, faculty members, and stakeholders who contributed to the process of bringing these two candidates to Uxbridge,” Dr. Tiano said. “I’m excited to begin working with them.”

In the Alternatives Community gallery they have their 2nd annual open painting show. The opening reception is September 7th, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Come see the eclectic mix of styles and enjoy the company of friends, wine and munchies.

This show will be followed by their Annual Fall show, Alternatives annual Tapestry Show then a Holiday Marketplace for one of a kind gift giving. Presently there is a large selection of cards available.

Their monthly meetings will provide plenty of inspiration for members and the public is welcome to come as well. September will feature, JoAnne Naugher for a class on using Alcohol Inks. No experience necessary, these inks do as they please and provide vivid abstract patterns. In October Adria Arch from the golden Paint and Medium Com-

pany will demo and give samples of their products. Carolyn Letvin will provide a hands on demonstration on Palm Press printing, in November. A members only Christmas Party will fill the December slot.

Their Annual Photo Show will be in January, so photo buffs keep your eye out for that once in a life time shot. They plan to keep the gallery open on Saturdays for public viewing, and there is always some form of art activity to participate in.

Outside the gallery they will be at the Hopedale Day in the Park, September 15th from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. They will have a 2nd annual Sunflower Show at the Booklover's gourmet, 55 E.Main St, Webster.

The opening reception is September 8th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. They have shows at the Milford Local Access TV Studio, and The Hunter’s grill.

They are partners in the Small Stones Art Festival. Submission deadline for this show is September 11th. It is open to all fine art painters and photographers.

Divorce Support Group begins session The DivorceCare Recovery Support group program is for men and women struggling through separation and divorce. The program offers support from knowledgeable leaders and interaction with others going through the same experiences.

Each meeting includes time for making some new friends, refreshments, and a video, followed by small group discussion. Weekly topics include What’s Happening to Me, Facing Your Anger, Depression, Financial Survival, Loneliness, and KidCare.

The DivorceCare program is free, non-denominational, and open to all.

Meetings of the group begin Tuesday, September 4th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Pleasant Street Church, 25 Cross Street, Whitinsville. The program continues for 13 weeks, and participants can begin attending at any time. Paul Reddy, Sr., 86 Paul Lawrence Reddy, Sr., 86, a former resident of Framingham for 25 years, died on August 13th, 2018, in hospice care at Framingham Union Hospital. He was born on Staten Island on August 29th, 1931, the son of Raymond and Edith (Reardon), natives of Staten Island. He is survived by two sons, Paul Lawrence Reddy, Jr. of Natick and Liam Anthony Reddy of Uxbridge. He was very proud of his two sons and they meant the world to him. Paul and Liam loved their Father and faithfully visited him at home or often at the hospital or nursing home and were completely devoted to him. He also leaves his former wife and best friend, Connie (Reddy) Dwyer of Oxford and her husband, Jim, who was like a brother to him.

Paul had been a professional licensor for the Dept. of Mental Health in January 1975 for 10 years until DMH was merged with the Dept. of Mental Retardation in 1986. He worked for the Commonwealth from 1975 to 2001 and retired at the age of 70 after 25 years of dedicated service.

Paul was a 25-year parishioner of St.

Paul Lawrence Reddy, Sr. Bridget’s Church in Framingham and was a devout Catholic with a special devotion to Our Lord, His Blessed Mother, St. Theresa of the Child Jesus and St. Francis. He was happy to give his time and devotion to the church and his friend, Msgr. Francis Strahan. He was a lector, Eucharistic Minister, teacher in the RCIA program, “Chauffeur a Parishioner,” taught CCD, and was President of the Legion of Mary.

He was selfless and a compassionate Father and friend. He had a special friendship with Jimmy Hall of Framingham with whom he taught RCIA and

Jimmy took Holy Communion to Paul every week at the Oak Knoll Nursing Home in Framingham where Paul resided this past year.

Paul holds two degrees from St. Bonaventure’s University, NY, (Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy (1954) & Master of Arts in History (1963), and taught both subjects at St. Bonaventure’s. He also holds a Master’s in Religious Education from Catholic University, Washington, DC. (1971) where he completed the coursework in Religious Education for a Ph.D. He taught Theology at Siena College in Loudonville, NY. He was also Dean of Men at Siena (1965-1968). Because of his closeness to the Friars, he always said “I am a Franciscan at heart.”

Due to declining health in 2016, Paul resided with Connie and her husband Jim in Uxbridge and was a parishioner at St. Mary’s Church, Uxbridge, where he taught in the RCIA program, along with Dwain Robbins who became a soul mate. Dwain brought Holy Communion to Paul every week when he was homebound.

Besides his two sons and former wife, Paul is survived by three brothers, Dr. Fr. Reginald Reddy, a retired physics professor from Siena College, NY, Robert Reddy of OK, and John Reddy of NY. He was predeceased by two brothers, Fr. David Reddy, OFM, a missionary in Chile who is buried there and Richard Reddy formerly of E. Lyme, CT & Jacksonville, FL. Mass was held at St. Bridget’s Church, in Framingham. Uxbridge Library Book and Bake Sale Sept. 22 Due to the timing of Columbus Day Weekend this year, The Friends of the Uxbridge Free Public Library will be holding their annual fall Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, September 22nd. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., bargain hunters will find gently used books, movies, and books on tape for unbelievably low prices as well as delicious baked goods for sale.

This popular event is one of the main fundraisers sponsored by the Friends group and helps to finance programs and projects for the town library.

Everything from biographies to fiction to romance novels as well as DVD

movies for kids and adults will be up for grabs.

Come and fill a Friends’ book bag to the top or pick out an item or two; great deals will be had by all. The Friends are also looking for item donations for the event in order to make the sale another huge success.

TLC, Inc. focuses on conservation Tetreault Land Conservation, Inc. is a federally recognized (501 c) public charity, actively pursuing donations to protect local sensitive environmental land in Douglas and Uxbridge. Its purpose, as developed with consultation with Merritt and Veronica Tetreault, is the conservation, preservation, maintenance and protection of undeveloped and/or ecologically significant lands in the Blackstone Valley.

For the initial phase, Tetreault Land Conservation, Inc. is currently focusing on the natural areas surrounding Yew Street and White Court. This rural, undeveloped land of trees, fields, wetlands, and streams contain an ecologically sensitive area, containing endangered species in the National Heritage Program.

Steve Pierangeli, a Founding Director of TLC, informs us that the wetlands, tributaries, brooks and streams that

begin in, as well as transverse, this small geographic area, have a direct and significant impact on the nationally recognized Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor. These tributaries are directly fed from the headwaters creating Laurel Brook, an important source water for the Blackstone River Heritage Corridor. Pete Tetreault was acutely aware of the significance of this undeveloped land and its overall ecological impact on the surrounding area, as well as the Blackstone Valley Heritage Corridor.

TLC is working with the Tetreault Family to pursue land donations which will permanently secure Pete’s legacy.

Landscape Gardening Lecture Series to begin in North Grafton For Central Massachusetts home gardeners looking to take their knowledge and skills to the next level, the Massachusetts Master gardener Association (MMgA) has announced a new fall session of its popular Home Horticulture Series of educational lectures: the program will run on Wednesday evenings September thru November at Brigham Hill Community Farm, North grafton. Children invited to DAR contest Northbridge Cub Scout Pack to register girls Northbridge Cub Scout Pack 150 is smaller groups called “Dens,” made up welcome as tag-alongs, this major “Imagining I Was There Reprised” excited to announce that, for the first of 4 to 10 scouts and based on age/ change will finally allow girls to Hear ye, hear ye! Attention all young patrons of the Uxbridge Free Public Library from pre-K to grade 5! A colonial coloring contest is being co-sponsored by the Deborah Wheelock Chapter, DAR, to remember the 231st anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States on September 17th, 1787. Deb Hinkle, library director, described last year’s participation in the first-time collaborative outreach project with the Uxbridge DAR chapter as ‘a huge success’.

Budding young artists are invited once again to come to the children’s room from September 10th to 29th to draw or color scenes depicting colonial life in 18th century America.

Specifically on September 17th, as decreed by Congress in 2004, the US Constitution has been studied in all public schools. A drawing/coloring contest is a creative, fun way to introduce the youngest citizens to the document that underpins American democracy and its unique system of govern-

This change will allow for Pack 150 to be recognized as a “Family Pack.”

Coffee Break’s Fall season begins on Thursday, September 6th, at Fairlawn Church and is held each Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Coffee Break offers women in the Blackstone Valley an opportunity to read and discuss the Bible, share questions and concerns, and develop new friendships. Fall/Winter Servicesbegin at historic Meeting House On Sunday, September 30th at 2:00 p.m., the Fall/Winter season of ecumenical services will begin at the historic Meeting House at 197 Elm Street in Blackstone. Matthew Nordquist, Pastor of Student and Young Adult Ministries at Valley Chapel, A Church of the Nazarene in Uxbridge, Mass., will serve as guest pastor. Pastor Matt grew up in Millville and is a graduate of Blackstone-Millville Regional High School where he played basketball and baseball. In 2017, Matt graduated from Cedarville University where he received a Bachelors of Arts in Biblical Studies, while minoring in Youth Ministry and greek. In June of 2018, he received his District License in the Church of the Nazarene.

Music for the service will be under the direction of John Staples of Blackstone. Special musical selections will be performed by members of the Valley Chapel Youth Band.

WCC celebrates “fresh Cookbook” fundraiser The Whitin Community Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to enhancing the health and well-being of individuals and families and to building a strong community in the Blackstone Valley, has been selected as a benefiting non-profit of the “fresh Cookbook” fundraiser at Uxbridge Hannaford for the month of September.

The fresh Cookbook was released in July 2018 and contains the best fresh Magazine recipes that Hannaford customers have enjoyed for years. These recipes are perfect for everyday cooking and special occasions. The cookbook contains delicious recipes and a little "frosting on the cake" for local communities. Every fresh Cookbook purchased in September generates a $5 donation to support the critical work of the Whitin Community Center. Uxbridge Lions plan Fall Car Show What better way to usher in the fall than to spend the day admiring amazing autos at a super local location? The Uxbridge Lions will try its hand at hosting a car show on Saturday, September 22nd from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Valley Chapel, 14 Hunter Road in Uxbridge.

All car classes are welcome from antique to muscle to foreign cars and trucks. Hopefully, motorcycles will stop by, too. Registration fee for every category is only $10.00. Admission for the public is free. Uxbridge Senior Center honors local Eagle Scout The Uxbridge Senior Center honored Stephen Oncay last month, in recognition of him building a storage shed for the center. The shed was part of Stephen’s Eagle Scout service project for Whitinsville Scout Troop #155. Through this requirement, Stephen learned and gained valuable project management and leadership experience. He submitted plot plans and permits to build the shed. As well as laid the blocks and constructed the building.

The Senior Center will benefit by Stephen’s service by providing extra storage space for the center to house their snow blower, grill and other various big items. Service to others is an important part of the Scout Oath “…to help other people at all times.” Young men strive to achieve the coveted Eagle Scout rank by applying character, citizenship, and Scouting values in their daily lives.

The Uxbridge Senior Center would like to personally thank Stephen for his contribution and wish him good luck on his college pursuit at WPI.

The 12th Annual Thanks To Yanks Tribute 9/11 Dinner is now open for registration. This free dinner on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Milford is only open to military members, veterans, first responders, and families. This non-political event is to simply say "Thank You" for the sacrifices they make to ensure our freedoms and safety while remembering the heroes and victims of 9/11/01. The first tribute dinner hosted 120 guests and has continued to grow each year with over 450 guests in 2017.

This special free tribute dinner recognizes all military members, veterans, first responders and their families, including Blue and gold Star families. Registration is required for the event as seating will be limited and can be done at www. thankstoyanks.org.

Saint Peter Parish in Northbridge to host Alpha Program St. Peter Parish will offer the Alpha program on Monday evenings this fall, from September 10th to November 19th.

Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that freely explore the basics of the Christian faith. Each session includes a light meal, a short presentation on some aspect of the Christian faith, and a discussion where participants can share their thoughts through informal conversation on the topic.

senior corner Douglas Woman raises Alzheimer’s Awareness Jennifer Ashworth of Douglas will participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Worcester County Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sunday, September 23rd at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester.

Jennifer Ashworth is walking to honor her mother who is living with the disease and to remember her dad who was her mother’s primary caregiver until 2015 when he passed. When her mother was first diagnosed, she turned to the Alzheimer’s Assn. website for education.

“Everyone associated with the Alzheimer’s Association was so helpful and had great energy and enthusiasm,” said Ashworth. “No matter where people are in their journey with Alzheimer’s...you will end the day with a full heart.”

Jennifer participated in the Worcester Walk to End Alzheimer's for the first time in 2017. She recalls being a part of the Promise garden Ceremony and being surrounded by people at every stage of the Alzheimer's journey. "No matter where people are in their journey with Alzheimer's," says Ashworth,” whether you are fighting it yourself, a caregiver, remembering a loved one who has passed from dementia, or just there to support the cause in general, you will have a great experience and end the day with a full heart."

Mendon Pitch League is seeking players for the Fall & Spring sessions.

Teams(3 people), full time individuals, and substitutes are welcome. All ages.

They play at the Mendon Senior Center (62 Providence Street) on Thursdays at 7:00 p.m. They start the first Thursday evening in October.

It is a social league with a banquet for each session. Dues are $5 per person

per night. Regulars pay for their subs.

Celebrating the Past and Future of USC With lots of reasons to celebrate, the Uxbridge Elderly Connection, the friends of the Uxbridge Senior Center fundraising arm, is throwing a shindig on Saturday, October 6th, at 4:00 p.m., at the VFW Post on Route 16 in Uxbridge. On the menu is the local favorite porketta with all the trimmings. Vegetarian alternative will be available. Tickets for the dinner priced at $20, will go on sale September 1st, and will be available at the senior center at 36 S. Main Street and from Uxbridge Elderly Connection members. Tables seat eight so it would be a good idea to reserve that table for friends and family to ensure that you can enjoy the festivities together. For information call 508-278-8622.

The celebration element will focus on the service of past senior center directors Mary Rice and Marsha Petrillo recognizing their years of dedication and innovation and to welcome and offer support to newly appointed Director of Counsel on Aging Lisa Bernard. Also to be honored will be Lorraine Nedoroscik, one of the moving forces to establish the senior center in this town.

No fundraising festivity can be complete without door prizes to delight and gift basket sales to fill the coffers. The Uxbridge Elderly Connection supports the senior center’s mission in many ways by providing improvements to the facility, promoting social events, supplementing transportation needs and more. Bereavement Counseling – Are you dealing with the loss of a loved one, losing a job, or your home or just need to talk to someone? Call and make an appointment to talk to their bereavement counselor who is available for all ages by appointment. All sessions are

RMV NEAR ME Transactions are: license renewals (for licensed drivers younger than age 75 and if you do not need an eye test), registration renewals, change of address, duplicate license or registration, and how to report a lost or stolen disability placard and how to request a replacement. With the new changes at the RMV, those who want a Real ID will have to go to the registry. They can assist you as far as getting ready online, but you will still have to go in person to complete the transaction. If you are getting a standard ID or driver’s license, they can help you do this online, unless your photo or vision test need to be updated. All persons will need to now bring in their birth certificate or a valid US Passport. If you need assistance with one of the above transactions, please call 508-278-8622 to schedule an appointment with gail, Outreach Coordinator. Azrael Acres Horse Farm is a hidden gem Tucked away in the hills of Uxbridge, Massachusetts is a hidden gem, Azrael Acres Horse Farm, home to 25 horses, and the Perini Family. Upon entering the gravel driveway off of Williams Street, drive slowly, you will find a myriad of farm life including chickens, roosters, cats, Annie the farm rescue hound, who has settled into farm dog life and happy to greet visitors (especially if you have a treat); you may even be greeted by Diamond Dave, the resident cow!

Faith and Louis Perini have owned and raised their family on the 90+ acre horse farm for 27 years, creating a beautiful spot for horse enthusiasts in the area. The farm is home to horses ranging from beginner lesson horses, to local competition mounts, to retirees spending their days grazing on the many grass pastures available on the property.

Azrael Acres provides lessons for beginner to intermediate riders on a number of safe and experienced farm owned horses and ponies, as well as boarding for local horse owners. In addition, Azrael Acres is host to eight horse shows throughout the summer season. The shows allow young riders, adult amateurs and local trainers the ability to compete both in Hunt-

During 2018 the farm proudly hosted a number of clinics with impressive clinicians from around the country including 4 Star Eventing and Olympic short list/alternate for the United States Eventing Team, Allison Springer and Elisa Wallace. Clinics are open to riders and auditors wishing to learn more from some of our country’s most knowledgeable equestrians.

Local Uxbridge teacher, Linda Hall Simonds, began taking her 9 year old daughter to the farm Spring 2018 for lessons with one of the instructors and had this to say about their experience: “My daughter has always been fascinated by horses. When she inquired about horseback riding lessons, I reached out to Savannah at Azrael Acres. I had done some research on equine therapy and the benefits it offers children with anxiety.

My daughter has enjoyed learning to care for the horse, building a sense of purpose and responsibility. She has learned that her calm words and calm body can give positive direction to an animal much bigger than herself. The joyful interactions that take place during her lessons have encouraged her and promoted a sense of

positive self-perception, an area where she struggles. After leaving her lessons, my daughter has expressed feeling emotionally refreshed and energized.

We are so grateful for not only the riding lessons, but the life lessons this activity encourages.”

Arts Program are once again hosting a series of fundraising dinners to benefit several charitable organizations and causes. The monthly dinners are held in the student-run Three Seasons Restaurant located on the BVT campus at 65 Pleasant Street in Upton.

Each all-you-can-eat dinner is held on a Thursday evening and consists of a themed buffet, dessert, and beverage.

Industrial Clubs of America (VICA), SkillsUSA was founded in 1965. It is a national organization that supports career and technical education. Students compete at the district, state, and national level in their technical areas and leadership events.

Helping to create Renewable Energy Norfolk County Agricultural High School students celebrated the creation of renewable energy on their campus in Walpole with the addition of a new 50-foot wind turbine.

Entirely assembled by the students and staff, the wind turbine, funded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, is now generating and feeding clean energy throughout the Jacob Morganelli

campus. This is a big step for the new Environmental Science program at the school.

Aggie students are helping set an example for others to pursue the use of clean energy.

business review UMass now offering Boston Children’s Ophthalmology

Suzanne Johnston, MD UMass Memorial Medical Center’s (UMass Memorial) Department of Ophthalmology announces a collaboration with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Department of Ophthalmology to offer pediatric ophthalmology services for children in Central Massachusetts. This service, which opened to new patients last month, is the first of its kind to be offered at the UMass Memorial Eye Center and addresses a critical need in the community.

Suzanne Johnston, MD, a board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist, will be the first Boston Children’s ophthalmologist to see patients and perform surgeries at Hahnemann Eye Center. Dr. Johnston will provide evaluation, diagnosis and treatment for a full range of eye conditions that affect children, including eye misalignment problems.

“Convenient, closer to home access to expert eye care will make a huge difference in the lives of families and their children in this area,” said Shlomit Schaal, MD, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at UMass Memorial.

“We are fortunate to have a physician with the credentials of Dr. Johnston on board pioneering this service at the Medical Center. I am grateful to Dr. David Hunter and his team at Boston Children’s Hospital for supporting this collaboration.”

Dr. Hunter, chief of Ophthalmology at Boston Children’s Hospital, worked with Dr. Schaal to initiate the collaborative effort. “We are delighted to be able to build this bridge across institutions to provide the expertise of Boston Children’s pediatric ophthalmologists to the Central Massachusetts community,” said Dr. Hunter.

“I am very excited for this opportunity to engage with children in Central Massachusetts and help them address any medical condition that could negatively impact their vision,” Dr. Johnston shared. “It is important for families to identify these problems early to head off any potential longterm damage in the future. After visit-

ing with the leadership at the UMass Memorial Eye Center I was very impressed with the organizational commitment to the cause of pediatric eye care.”

Service dog “Cullen� is a special lifelong, lifesaving friend

By Ann Marie Montello With humans, a person has to die in order to note their wonderful, caring, and productive life. Obituaries many times state facts about people that no one ever knew, even people who knew them for decades. I always questioned this and believed that we need to honor people while still on the earth.

As a result, I tell my adult children how much they mean to me and how proud I am of all that they have accomplished for themselves and for others. I also tell friends too and so glad that I did last year, in a long email, before my best friend passed. Knowing that you mean that much to someone makes your day better, even if it did not appear to be a good one initially. Also, don't we remember nice things said to us by someone we know as well as those we do not know? To honor Cullen, my service dog, age nine years, alive and healthy, I decided to write this. People sometimes don't notice, or even are aware that their dog does so many things for them on a daily basis. Cullen, being a service dog, has been trained to do many things for me. As important, he has done miraculous acts on his own, for others. For all the dog lovers around, I wanted to honor him as he is nine years of age, and has accomplished more service in those years than many humans. Dogs are amazing creatures and I have noticed that many never get the credit they truly deserve.

Most know that even un-trained dogs save lives of those they love.

Cullen is a 68 pound almond goldendoodle from Ohio. The kennel I purchased him from used a special breeder out there for their goldendoodles.

Mom was an apricot standard poodle and dad a white golden retriever. I was lucky that I saw pictures of his folks. I took him home from the kennel when he was 12 weeks of age. Cullen was not trained by a service dog facility or would have cost $25,000 dollars.

He was just a regular dog that had the intelligence and personality of two popular breeds. Plus I wanted a mixed breed for several reasons. Having dealt with a service dog center out of state, I learned that some are dishonest. I lost over eight thousand dollars with one.

Never got what was promised and could not get my money returned even with an attorney, as they claimed bankruptcy. That too was a lie. Now, I am not saying that all service dog centers are crooks. I am just saying to do your homework before going to one.

So this little fluff ball had such a personality that people would mention to me that he is like a human, not a dog. I looked and looked for a dog trainer who specialized in dogs for diabetes.

Well good luck. There were none back then locally. I did find a couple on the West coast! Luckily I found a military/police dog trainer from the Western part of the state, who said he would try to train for blood sugar detection and did. After all, he trained hundreds of dogs to detect other things.

At first, I took him to a puppy kindergarten class which he passed like a pro at 16 weeks. He attained his Canine good Citizen certification a little over a year of age. He passed that class with

flying colors. Living with me, a type I diabetic, who had lows and highs daily, was the best way to train. So I was trained how to train this puppy to detect scents. I still used a local trainer that I felt would help with skills like alerting me to the cell phone and sounds I could not hear. I can't always hear my insulin pump alarms so Cullen alerts me always. His trainer also taught him that if I wake up in the middle of the night due to a low sugar, to get my bottle of glucose tablets and bring them onto the bed. That was fun to learn. In a practice, Cullen did not see the bottle of glucose tabs on the kitchen counter but noticed the bottle of ketchup. He carried it upstairs, on his own, and gave it to me. He was still praised for the going and bringing act. Soon he learned what glucose tabs smelled like.

One day, still in training, we were in a grocery store and Cullen knew he had to walk besides my carriage and not pull, which he always did. One day, he

started to pull me toward one isle and my "no, heel" command meant zilch.

So I walked quickly away in another direction, and he calmed down.

Wouldn't you know, five minutes later he did the same thing. So I figured he thinks he knows the man at the end of the aisle so I decided to go in that direction. He gracefully went up to this gentleman and gave him his paw! I apologized and said to this man that Cullen may have thought he recognized him but did not have my heart in those words. The man asked me what he is in training for as his vest read "Service Dog in training". I told him he detects low blood sugars and alerts me to them and also is a hearing dog since I can't hear many sounds I need to, like on my insulin pump, and my cell phone. I mentioned that he is learning to alert me to those sounds. This gentleman was astounded as he said he was a diabetic having a bad low sugar episode and candies were not working! Wow was I glad young Cullen did this! I gave him some glucose tablets and we stayed with him until he felt well. Of course he did not want me to call an ambulance, so I knew that if in fifteen minutes he was not feeling better, I told him I would call. He agreed. He became quite happy when he realized he was ok and was very grateful for Cullen!

On another occasion, at school where I taught, Cullen stayed close to or under my desk all period. One day he left his area and walked over to the other end of the classroom and went to one of my students.

I thought it odd that he did this as he also gave her a paw and laid by her feet for the remainder of the class. I quietly asked her if she was ok or did she feel sick or something as I knew she was not diabetic. She told me that all was well and she felt fine. Class ended and it was the last period of the day. It kept me wondering what was going on but when a good student tells you that she is fine, you tend to believe her. Next day she ran up to the desk when she came to class and told me something that she could not believe. So I listened.

That day that Cullen stayed with her and gave her his paw and that "look", when she got home she had a grand mal

seizure. So Cullen smelled her different chemistry smell and across the room it diffused! We cannot smell this stuff but animals can. There are cats out there that recognize sugar lows! Some do this naturally. Truly amazing Wouldn't you say? He also was trained to pick things up from the floor when I drop something. He does a great job with this but is not fond of plastic water bottles. Can you blame him with that crunchy sound? Credit cards are a challenge sometimes too. If a pencil rolls off the counter he can be resting, but will jump up and fetch it and bring it to me. He loves doing itl This was very helpful when my vertigo was with me. Now that is cured so Cullen doesn't get to do this much. So yes, I do drop something once in a while, as he loves the praise when he gives it to me or whoever dropped it.

So chemistry is chemistry. When Cullen smells a different chemistry in someone, he knows trouble is on the way. It does not end here. One day in a library, he wanted to go to the far end of it for whatever reason, instead of staying by me. He is always well-behaved so I knew again, 1 better follow. A young woman had her head down on the desk and he went right over and put his head on her lap. I asked her if she was ok. She asked me what he does and I told her. She told me she has PTSD and was about to have an attack. Also, she said she is having a dog trained to help as we speak. So she did not have the attack and I was so happy! Cullen's nose is rarely wrong. So he works for PTSD victims also, not being trained for it. people with PTSD, especially vets, need dogs like Cullen. Any breed trained can work for a person with PTSD. Actually, a dog is the best medicine for many.

I won't bore you with anymore stories but there are more. He saves my life each and every day with his alerts. He is better than my glucose sensor I wear 24/7. It is ten minutes behind my true blood sugar and his alert is right on the money. I love this dog for so many reasons. I had to write this now, as he is older and can't live forever. When he passes, a big part of my life, love and happiness will pass too. He does not judge anyone by race, color, creed or political views. Dogs are not Democrat or Republican. He loves and respects all. Wouldn't the world be a better place if humans behaved as such?

As a Special Educator, now retired, I can't even begin to tell you how many students he has helped just with his love. I can't tell you how many teachers came into my office each week to see Cullen, especially if having a bad day.

He cheered everyone up and still does.

Cullen plays and chews bones and has an open toy chest for his toys he loves to play with. He runs in the woods with his pal, Raven, my younger labradoodle and they even tease one another like dogs do. Pray that I have him for many years to come. I have had many dogs in my life, until their old age and passing.

Never have I had one like Cullen.

sports shorts Uxbridge Cal Ripken 10U World Series Adventure Whitinsville Fish and Game Club to host Annual Field Day The Uxbridge Baseball Association is proud to announce the results of the Cal Ripken 10U 2018 World Series held in Vincennes, Indiana.

Teams included Lexington Kentucky, West Palm Beach Florida, Pearl City Hawaii, South Bend Indiana, Riley Indiana, Vincennes, Indiana, and Vincennes Indian Host Team, Kennewick, Washington, West Fargo North Dakota, Johnstown Pennsylvania, Mobile Alabama, and Uxbridge, MA, which represented all of New England. Uxbridge had two challenging losses to Lexington Kentucky and South Bend Indiana to start off the Series.

Uxbridge stormed back with four straight victories starting with a resounding 13 to 3 win over Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Then a rain delay had Uxbridge play at 10:00 p.m. game against Vincennes, Indiana that ended with Uxbridge prevailing 6 to 3 to get Uxbridge right back into the Series.

Uxbridge then captured a 3 to 2 victory against the powerhouse West Palm Beach Florida that propelled Uxbridge into the winner’s bracket and seeded them 2nd in their respected division.

Next up was West Fargo North Dakota that succumbed to Uxbridge 2-1 in

Memorial Motorcycle Run The 6th Annual Christopher Joseph Mitrano Motorcycle Run will take place on Sat., Sept. 15th at the VFW Post 1385, 16 Cross Road in Uxbridge.

Uxbridge lost to Pearl City Hawaii (who went on to capture the 2018 10U Cal Ripken World Series) in the final 4.

The team was crowned with 3rd place medals on the field and became the 3rd ranked team in all of the United States with their remarkable performance.

The team was honored for their accomplishment at the Uxbridge Board of Selectmen’s meeting on August 27th and will be on the field at Fenway Park

on September 14th when the Red Sox take on the New York Mets.

High Hoops wraps up 2018 Summer Clinics Many kids from all over the Blackstone Valley area participated in a highly anticipated High Hoops Summer Basketball Clinic at the Hab this year. The kids had tons of fun and it was a great experience for everyone.

The clinic was run by Basketball Directors Dean Hirtle and Dave Aldrich. "Our clinic is designed for boys and girls in grades PreK-8th and focuses on teaching the kids the fundamentals of the game of basketball". "Throughout the week each player is taught the proper techniques to develop their skills to be better basketball players". "We play games, run stations, focus on fun-

damentals, and have competitions each day" said Hirtle. "All the kids and our coaches did a fantastic job and we are very excited about growing this program again next year".

Each participant received many takeaways from the program.

Coaches evaluations were conducted for each player to give them the feedback and confidence they need to become better players. They also received a High Hoops T-shirt, certificate of accomplishment and a High Hoops plaque. Many kids left the clinic inspired and enthusiastic about their overall experience. When asking the kids what was their favorite part of the program,

many replied "everything".

Parents and relatives were all invited to a fun awards ceremony that took place on the last day.

The kids were asked to work with their coaches and create a skit to be preformed during the clinics "Showtime" event which was held at the awards ceremony on the last day and was a ton of fun.

High Hoops continues to support youth sports including exercise, heath and fineness and they strive to keep kids active in the local community.
