Representative Peterson honored at annual chamber meeting By Constance Dwyer Instead of its traditional annual breakfast awards meeting, the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce (BVCC) hosted a dinner meeting at the Pleasant Valley Country Club in Sutton. The room was packed in recognition of state Rep. George N. Peterson’s retirement after 20 years of service as a legislator in the Blackstone Valley. State Rep. David Muradian, his successor, presented him with a proclamation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Rep. Peterson was introduced by Scott Rossiter, Chairman of Lampin Corporation and a SCORE counselor, and since he and George both were classmates at Grafton High School, a lot of teasing took place. Rep. Peterson’s wife, Diana, was also present, and when he expressed his appreciation to everyone, he also acknowl-

edged that his wife’s ongoing support was an integral part of his effectiveness as a legislator. The keynote speaker was Andrea Jung, President and CEO of Grameen America and co-founder and Chairman of Venly. The executive gave Venly its name based on the way our Venn diagram brings together talented recent graduates and returning veterans to help their local businesses and community institutions with a user friendly service. Hence the name Venly for comingling hi-touch and hi-tech. Grameen America is a non-profit micro-finance bank begun by Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammed Yunus. Its focus is to assist poverty-stricken women and give them seed money to start small businesses. Ms. Jung’s impressive credentials also include her having spent 13 years as Avon’s first female Chair and CEO until 2012. and General Electric. Her talk was not the usual format of a speaker standing solo and addressing a crowd but, instead, President & CEO Jeannie Hebert of the BVCC interacted with her in a one-on-one sit-down interview. Ms. Jung stressed how Venley “is all about businesses growing and helping the Chamber here in the Blackstone Valley and helping entrepreneurs…a private-public partnership on local, state and federal (levels).” She cited Whole Foods as an example of a business that “gives back to community life through its Whole Foods Foundation.” One of the questions posed to Ms. Jung by President & CEO Jeannie Hebert was on balancing home life with work responsibilities. Ms. Jung said when her daughter was 10 she had to make a decision whether she’d attend a White House ceremony to which then President George Bush had invited her. “I did not go because my daughter
would have remembered if I had gone.” The Chamber’s award recipients were recognized at the annual meeting. Three of the recipients are Blackstone Valley residents. The Preservation Leadership Award was given by Evan Malone, Ph.D. to National Park Service Ranger Chuck Arning. “Ranger Chuck,” as he is affectionately called, is well known for his stories of the Blackstone Valley as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Because of a previous commitment to be in the Bahamas, Donna Williams of the Blackstone Valley National Heritage Corridor could not attend to receive the Gerry Gaudette Extra Mile Award presented by Lee Gaudette, president of Gaudette Insurance Agency and the son of the late Gerry Gaudette. Ms. Williams is well known for her tireless work for the Blackstone River and the Blackstone Valley and is among others who just celebrated the

recent bill passed to establish the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. The third award, entitled the Cornerstone, was presented by Mark Coblitz to Blackstone Valley resident Vince Osterman of the Milford Regional Medical Center and Milford Regional of the Blackstone Valley. His foresight, in 2009, in acquiring 92 acres for the Osterman Commerce Park, allowed Milford Regional to break ground in 2014 for a 23,600 square-feet structure, opening its doors to patients the following October. The park and facility are a major catalyst for growth and expansion of the Blackstone region. Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman Joseph Deliso gave a brief Chairman’s report and announced the election of officers.
