BSTRA National Trails Day Recently the 24th annual National Trails Day was celebrated by The Bay State Trail Riders Association, Inc. (BSTRA). With a great turnout of equestrian participants and volunteers at the event held out of the Greenbriar Recreation Area of Hodges Village Dam in Oxford, National Trails Day 2016 was a wonderful success raising in excess of $13,000 for BSTRA to put into community trail improvement projects. The celebration was a beautiful 6 ½ mile marked trail ride through the park for equestrians, offering riders wooded trails and open fields, as well as scenic water views. But BSTRA’s National Trails Day Fundraiser Ride, sponsored by Paresky Flitt & Company, isn’t just about taking your horse for a nice ride in the park – it’s a day to raise money and give back to the community. Many of the participants went out and collected donations on their “National Trails Day Sponsor Papers” and submit-

ted them to BSTRA at the event. Awards were given to the top eight participants who brought in the most in donations, as well as awards to two additional runner ups. The top participants were: Lynn Paresky of Douglas; Becky Kalagher of Douglas; Donna Johnson of Bellingham; Sue Quirk of Blackstone; Karen Parlin of N. Grafton; Jeremy and Tristen Weeks (father and son) of S. Grafton; Carolyn and Justin Weeks (mother and son) of S. Grafton; and Chris Podles of Douglas. Runner Ups were Rita Cardinal of Douglas and Rose Zariczny of Woonsocket. The awards were donated by various product sponsors who support BSTRA with its National Trails Day Fundraiser. Adding to the proceeds collected from the event was a tremendous raffle of items donated by businesses helping BSTRA raise money for trails. Supporting the community trail syscontinued on page 6

Caffrey retires from Uxbridge Library after 27 years By Constance reedy Dwyer “If I were to rate my experience at the Uxbridge Library on a scale from 1 to 10, I’d give a 20,” smiled Senior Librarian Technician Carol Caffrey as she reflected on her 27 and a half years. When she started her job in January of 1989, her two children were then in grade school in the Uxbridge school system; now, they are adults, daughter Jennifer Pinto in Middleboro and son, Michael, in Uxbridge, with children of their own. Her retirement provides extra time for Carol to spend with her grandchildren: Benjamin Pinto and Michael and Teagan Caffrey. Carol started at the Uxbridge Library as a part-timer and eventually became a full-time hire. During her 27 and a half years, she’s never had a summer off. She’s worked for several different Library Directors, including the newly appointed Director Ann Thomas “who is

doing an excellent job.” She adapted well to the different management styles and said they all “tried their best to hold up the values and purpose of the trustees.” Previous Directors include longtime Librarian Susan Stanovich, and Debbie Young, who served twice as Acting Director, along with being the Children’s Librarian, and Jane Grantiano, four years. She could not compliment the trustees enough since they make sure they “meet the needs of the public as well as employees, and are a conscientious group. They care about the well being of the library and the town and know how to listen.” “The Uxbridge Library,” she continued, “is a tremendous resource. We can find answers for what you need and it’s free. Our business is service and you, the public, come first before anything else. Carol Caffrey “Service is our mantra at the Uxbridge Public Library. We want to treat everyone with service and kindness.” Many readers were accustomed to often seeing Carol at the front desk with her trademark smile and cheerfulness. Asked how it was for her in dealing with the

public, she only had positive comments. “I treated everyone royally whether a millionaire or a pauper. If, by chance, someone happen to come in grouchy, I still treated them well and found they left feeling better. Who knows what kind of day that person might have had.” On May 23, the Board of Trustees held a reception for Carol where she was able to greet the public she has come to know so well over the years. She was given a special gift, her favorite painting of the library done by Sue Dion, “now sitting in my family room; I look at it every day, and I feel so honored.” Her last day at work was June 10 and she said working locally was a big advantage for her in raising her family with her husband, Michael. Besides helping out with her three grandchildren which she views as a “luxury of extra time,” she will enjoy the R & R. “I’ll see what the next chapter in the book of life holds for me.”

25th Annual Company Open Charity Outing Tournament to benefit local youth programs Celebrating its 25th year, the Blissful Meadows Annual “Company Open” Golf Tournament will take place on Friday, September 16th, to raise funds benefiting local youth education and sports programs. This tournament began 25 years ago, as an event in which local companies could compete against each other for the title of the best company golf team or “Company Open Champion”. Each year, the winning team’s name is engraved on the Company Open trophy displayed in Blissful Meadow’s Meadowview Tavern. Eventually evolving into a youth charity event, the “Company Open” has raised over a quarter of a million dollars for local youth programs in the Uxbridge, Douglas, Northbridge and Blackstone Valley Tech Schools, as well as local youth sports programs. Participants return year after year for the fun, friendly atmosphere, beautiful autumn course conditions, great prizes and knowledge that 100% of the proceeds are benefiting our youth. New participants are encouraged to signup early as this event usually sells out. The cost of this event is $500 per team, and this includes green fees, golf car, prize money, continental breakfast, boxed lunch and steak dinner. Registration is at 9 a.m. and golf begins at 10 a.m. Guests are welcome to join for the steak dinner, raffles & auctions for $25 per person.
