Fire Station design gets green light

Uxbridge will soon begin the Design Development phase for their new 14,365 square foot Center Fire Station.

Boston-based Architecture firm Donham & Sweeney (D&S) recently completed a feasibility study which included a space needs analysis, a program, and concept designs for the new station.

D&S finished the Schematic Designs for the project last month.

The architecture firm designed the Center Fire Station to be prominently located, and included five apparatus bays which will allow for a two-way flow of traffic in and out of the station.

As Schematic Designs are refined by

the Architect, the Town will acquire an Owner’s Representative in preparation for the next few phases of the project which includes Design Development and Construction. Construction is expected to start in early 2016 and be completed in 2017.

Part of what makes Uxbridge a fabulous community is how they support others in need. In past years, Uniquely Uxbridge Day has contributed to the Fire Victim Fund of 2013, and made generous donations to our local Fire and Police Departments in 2014. In 2015, they announced the creation of the UU Legacy Fund. As in the past, all of the monies raised are given directly back, 100%, into the community, our community. The UU Legacy Fund will do that as well, by providing a Scholarship for a deserving Uxbridge resident. Stay tuned for more information on this excited venture.

The day starts at 10 a.m. in the Town Common. Come down, do some shopping, visit with the local crafters and artisans, and have the kids take part in the Kidz Korner activities. Along with face painting, balloon animals, games and prizes for the kids and more. Drop off a canned good and receive one (1) free raffle ticket!

The Uxbridge Parents for Safe Graduation 2016 will be holding its annual Community Yard/Bake Sale on Saturday, Sept 19th from 8 am-2 pm at St. Mary's Church in Uxbridge.

Downtown Douglas abuzz with excitement Dear Editor,

Downtown Douglas was abuzz with excitement at the end of July. The Farmer's market was in full swing and attracted crowds of citizens to its annual Recycling Day. People arrived with used technology and left with fresh produce and lemonade. Across the street,

the library steps were adorned with books being "sold" for a donation to the Friends of the Library. Inside, prominent regional author Clementine Bihiga shared the story of her memoir, "Happily Broken," and signed copies for patrons. From nine to noon, the downtown district was alive with civic engagement. It was a beautiful sight to

see, and for it we would like to thank all of those who came from Douglas and surrounding towns. Let's continue to build our civic community in the Blackstone Valley through events like these.

Deborah Wheelock Chapter DAR welcomes guests There may not be anything to cheer about with our beloved Red Sox this season, but cries of “Play Ball” will reverberate in the Simeon Wheelock House on Sunday, September 13th from 2 to 4 PM. Rick Elliott, an author from Cumberland RI, will speak on the ‘magical, courageous, and inspiring life’ of Clem Labine, a local boy who played major league baseball in Brooklyn, NY and who was instrumental in breaking the color barrier against Negro players in the 1950s. Mr. Elliott

will tell tales about Clem’s remarkable life on the field and in the Civil Rights movement and show some of his baseball memorabilia. Clem Labine: Always a Dodger, will be available for purchase and personalized autographing.

St. Patrick’s Fall Festival

This great festival will take place on Sunday, September 13th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the parish park on Cross Street in Whitinsville. This is a change from the previous years, in hopes more people will be able to participate and attend on a Sunday. Each year the parish comes together in spirit of support and community building.

The festival will go on rain or shine!

Travaline Unsung Heroine

Kathleen ‘Kate’ Travaline of Uxbridge was recently honored as a member of the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women’s 2015 class of Unsung Heroines. Representative Kevin J. Kuros (R-Uxbridge) recommended Ms. Travaline for this recognition because of her outstanding contribution to the Uxbridge Education Foundation for over a decade. Ms. Travaline was honored with the other Unsung Heroines for her outstanding contributions to Uxbridge in a ceremony in the Great Hall at the State House in Boston.

The Uxbridge Education Foundation, which Ms. Travaline has been the President of the past eight years, has raised over $100,000 dollars which is used to provide grants to teachers and scholarships to students. Through her efforts she has been able to impact the Uxbridge Community tremendously supplying teachers with necessary resources and allowing students to succeed after their graduation from Uxbridge High School.

The Unsung Heroines are women who don’t make the news, but make the difference. They are the women who use their time, talent and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others and make a difference in their neighborhoods, cities and towns. They are mentors, volunteers and innovators who do what needs to be done without expectations of recognition or gratitude. These women are the glue that keeps a community together and every community is better because of their contribution.

The ceremony included a program emceed by the MCSW Chair, Victoria A. Budson, acknowledging each of the 2015 Unsung Heroines followed by a group photograph and a Just Desserts reception. Ms. Travaline is pictured here being presented with a citation from the House of Representatives by Representative Kevin J. Kuros.

The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women is an independent state agency that was legislatively created in 1998 to advance women of the Commonwealth to full equality in all areas of life and to promote their rights and opportunities. The MCSW provides a permanent, effective voice for the women of Massachusetts.

Elster named WCC Executive Director

The Whitin Community Center (WCC) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that it has unanimously chosen Heather Elster as the new Executive Director.

Heather has worked for the WCC for over 8 years and has had much experience with many facets of the Center, located at 60 Main Street. She began as Director of Marketing and Development, was then promoted to Vice President of Operations and most recently to Chief Operating Officer and Interim Director following the resignation of Kevin Fusco.

Heather is well known to the Blackstone Valley community having previously been employed at the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce as Manager of Membership Services and Programs & Events Director. Prior to that Ms. Elster began her professional career at American Management Systems, a technology and software management consulting firm based in Virginia. Throughout her career, Heather has been responsible for team building, financial oversight, risk management, and performance analysis. She is a willing and active participant in community service events throughout the Blackstone Valley, especially in Sutton where she resides with her husband and three sons. She and her husband, Mike, have produced the annual Sutton “Kicks for Charity” Soccer Tournament for the past 10 years.

W. Robert Knapik, Chairman of the Whitin Community Center Board of Trustees, states, “Heather’s management experience, community involvement, and contributions to the WCC make her the ideal person to guide the center into its next phase. We look forward to her continued leadership.”

The Uxbridge Farmers Market is having a great second season hosted on the grounds of the The Haywagon at 504B West Hartford Avenue in Uxbridge. N. Uxbridge Italian American Club gifts Pout Pond a new security system

The Pout Pond Rec. Committee wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude for the recent gift of a new security system at Pout Pond.

They are truly grateful for the generosity of the members of the North Uxbridge Italian American Club whom have been part of the landscape of Uxbridge for many years. Without their generosity the protection of visitors would not have been realized for quite some time.

Newly installed and now up and running, this, state of the art, security system will operate 24/7 (year round) and can be viewed on and off site. Cameras mounted on the beach house view 180 degrees and have zoom capability if needed by police. The camera on a telephone pole views all cars as they enter and exit the parking lot with a special feature to view license plates.

Information is then saved for approximately 45 days.

This new security system is similar to what is now operating at the Town Hall and Police Station.

Future plans include add-ons to the partially renovated historic Capron Mill cottage located at the north side of the pond as well as key trail spots to monitor unlawful ATV traffic.

A new updated security system was on the Pout Pond wish list for years at the encouragement of town resident, former Ashland Police Chief and Pout Pond Rec. Committee member Tom

Kinder who spearheaded the initiative.

Other financial demands took precedent, e.g., weed control, summer employees, etc. With Tom usually at the pond daily in the summer he felt that a security system was essential in order to protect visitors especially in today’s world.

Since Pout Pond is open to the public year round, up until now it has been difficult to account for who shows up at the town beach. The primary concern is to assure that all visitors are safe year round. The second priority is to protect the facility from vandalism.

Pout Pond similar to other isolated

town beaches, is victim to illegal dumping, illegal fishing, fires set, etc. But, with a survey of other Massachusetts municipal beaches most, now have security systems in order to assure their visitors that there is an added level of oversight. Trash can be picked up and graffiti can be painted over but a negative occurrence experienced by a visitor is hard to make right. Hopefully, this new security system will discourage such an event.

Divorce Support Group begins new session Sept 8th The DivorceCare Recovery Support Group begins a new weekly session on Tuesday, September 8. This program is for men and women struggling through separation and divorce. The program offers support from knowledgeable leaders and interaction with others going through the same experiences.

Each meeting includes time for making some new friends, refreshments, and a video, followed by small group discussion. Weekly topics include What’s Happening to Me, Facing Your Anger, Depression, Financial Survival, Loneliness, and KidCare.

The DivorceCare program is free, non-denominational, and open to all.

Meetings of the group begin Tuesday, September 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Pleasant Street Church, 25 Cross Street, Whitinsville. The program continues for 13 weeks, and participants can begin attending at any time. Since the Pout Pond Rec. Committee has been active at Pout Pond there have been very few issues that have required police intervention. But, it’s at least nice to know that there are more tools to assist law enforcement in the event there is a need. A number of the North Uxbridge Italian American Club members were Pout Pond fans in their youth. That affinity with Pout Pond has lasted a lifetime with the hope to help pass on happy summer memories to new fans and all visitors young and not so young.

Douglas Cable Access programming notes This month on Public Channel 191, they are showing a new program by the Douglas Fire Dept. about their resident volunteer programs and explorer programs for high school age kids interested in helping out or a possible career in firefighting. Run by Lt. Jim Kaufman, the program discusses details of the

programs as well as how they are helpful to the dept. and the town in general.

On Sunday, September 20th, the Fall/Winter season of ecumenical services will begin at the historic Meeting House at 197 Elm Street in Blackstone.

Reverend Josh Howard, Pastor to Youth and Families at Valley Chapel, A Church of the Nazarene in Uxbridge, will serve as guest pastor. This is the second in a series of ecumenical services being sponsored by the East Blackstone Quaker Meeting House & Cemetery Historical Association, Inc. The service will commence at 2 p.m.

Rev. Howard has served as Youth Pastor at Valley Chapel since October 2006. He also preaches regularly at Valley Chapel, as well as at various camps and retreats. He and his wife, Kerrie, have two young daughters.

Music for the service will be under the direction of John Staples of Blackstone. Special musical selections will be performed.

The Association is also sponsoring a Dine-Out Fundraiser to be held on the same day. Friends of the Meeting House can contribute to this cause by dining at the Roast House located at 3

The Blackstone Valley United Methodist Church in Whitinsville will host a clothing swap on Saturday, September 12th, from 9 am-11 am.

Donations of gently used men's, women's and kid's clothing, shoes and accessories are accepted.

You don't have to donate to take something home and you don't have to take something in order to donate.

Everything is free and open to the public. Donations can be dropped off the night before, between 6-7pm or the morning of the swap. Southwick’s Zoo plans Harvest Festival

Southwick’s Zoo is turning 50 this year and they’re commemorating this milestone all season long with special monthly events. The next anniversary event is Harvest Festival on Sat., Sept.

12th. This event, taking place during the zoo’s normal hours of 10 am-5 pm, will celebrate the bounty of fall with a variety of fun family activities.

The event will include a Farmer’s Market featuring Shamrock Hives Farm, Trolley Crossing Farm, Elzires Acre Goat Milk Soap, and other local vendors. Visitors will be able to purchase fresh, locally grown produce, potted flowers, flower arrangements, handmade quilts, soaps, and more.

Southwick’s Zoo will also be offering horse drawn wagon rides as part of the fall fun, and guests of all ages can also look forward to face painting and a performance by the Puppet Brigade.

The Stockwell Brothers will be providing musical entertainment during the day within the zoo. This bluegrass band, featuring Bruce, Barry and Alan Stockwell, has performed alongside

artists including Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, and Earl Scruggs, as well as contemporary musicians like MaryChapin Carpenter, Jonathan Edwards and Asleep At the Wheel.

This is the perfect event for families looking for a unique autumn activity.

Many of the zoo’s animals also tend to be much more active once the weather cools down, making for an exciting zoo experience. Harvest Festival is sure to delight visitors both young and old.

A special tribute dinner is being planned to recognize all military members, veterans and their families, including Blue and Gold Star families while also remembering the heroes and victims of 9/11/01. This non- political event is to simply say "Thank You", for your service and sacrifices. Blackstone Valley Art Assn. News The Blackstone Valley Art Association is set to begin a new and exciting year. The first Annual Pleinair Event will take place September 45-6, at Daniel's Farmstead on Mendon St., in Blackstone. There will be a workshop on the 4th lead by David Lussier. The following day artists will be out and about the Valley painting.

On Sunday there will be an art show of the completed work.The farm will also be hosting their weekly farmer's market and the Claflin Symphony will perform their Patriotic concert. Ironstone School turns 100

The South Uxbridge Community Association will host an open house on Saturday, September 19th at the Ironstone School to commemorate its 100th year anniversary. Exhibits and historical information will be available and refreshments served. All are invited.

Douglas Library Book Group to meet The next meeting of the Douglas Library Book Group will be discussing Isaac’s Storm by Eric Larson on Tuesday, September 8th at 6:30 PM. This meeting will mark the 115th anniversary of the hurricane that killed over 6,000 people in Galveston, Texas. Larson’s book chronicles meteorologist Isaac Cline’s telegrams, letters, and reports as well as testimonies from other sources to tell the story of the fatal miscalculations in the face of the storm that led to such a disaster.

Mette Family to perform at St. Mary’s Church When the Mette family pulls into a church, it is usually not what people are expecting. Eight people step out of the vehicle, and people are naturally struck with curiosity. “Often they think that we are lost or on a vacation until we tell them that we travel full-time sharing the gospel through music,” Michael James Mette, a Catholic musician and speaker, recounted. The Mette family has adapted to a lifestyle which has taken them from coast to coast, traveling through 41 states in the past 18 months.

“People always ask if the kids sing on stage with me,” explained Michael. “I think they are envisioning some sort of Catholic Partridge family. It’s not really that style of music. It’s not meant to be liturgical music, it’s meant to draw people into an experience,” Michael said of his alternative rock. “I try to provide an environment for people to experience God in a new way.”

The evening concerts incorporate lights and video to supplement the music and the family’s testimony.

Michael describes his music as “passionate like a Friday night and reverent like a Sunday morning.”

The six children join Michael and his wife Michelle on the road not to perform, but to preserve the family unity.

“Before we traveled together I felt constantly torn between my vocation as a father and my occupation as a musician” Michael stated. “Traveling together has alleviated that tension.”

His wife, Michelle, agrees. “Michael gets to be home for bedtimes each night, and I don’t have to spend time in carpool lines. This was the natural next

step for us.”

Michael’s latest album “Arts + Humanity” reflects this integrated lifestyle. The music sounds modern, while the lyrics delve into the timeless riches of the faith. “I try to write with a sacramental imagination,” Michael said.

Songs like “Jesus Prayer” reflect an intimate, vulnerable spirituality, while “The Beat Goes On” is positively pop.

The Mette Family will perform at St. Mary’s Church located at 77 Mendon St. in Uxbridge. The event will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 9th from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Michael James Mette is a Catholic musician and speaker from St. Louis, Missouri. He has toured nationally with his family since May 2013. patients who are nearing the end of life.

The blankets are placed on beds to provide comfort to the patients, and later often become a keepsake for families.

Blackstone River’s ongoing restoration continues with “GO!” Program Congressman James McGovern headlined a panel of government speakers gathered at the scenic Blackstone Gorge State Park in Blackstone, to help the Blackstone River Coalition (BRC) celebrate the many successes of its "Campaign for a Fishable/Swimmable Blackstone". Addressing a crowd of 75 river advocates, McGovern stressed the value of working together to promote sound land use throughout the Blackstone River watershed. He emphasized that a healthy Blackstone is great for families and for our economy, expressing his confidence that the economy will grow again through our

collective protection of this natural resource, just as it did during the industrial revolution when the river's power was harnessed for mills and factories.

Matthew Sisk, Deputy Commissioner for the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation began his remarks to the crowd by identifying himself as a member of Trout Unlimited, a Scout, and an avid Outdoorsman.

He touted the role his agency has played in both combatting invasive Asian water chestnut in Rice City Pond in Uxbridge, and serving as a national model in developing the Blackstone Greenway, which, when completed,

will connect Blackstone, Millville, Uxbridge and Worcester to Woonsocket, Providence & Pawtucket, all the way to the Narragansett Bay. Lisa Primiano, Chief of the R.I. Department of Environmental Management’s Planning and Development Division, spoke of the great value of voluntary efforts to round out limited state and federal resources as we all embark on an exciting new chapter of the Blackstone's restoration. She said RIDEM hopes to be back in the short term to celebrate some new accomplishments.

Meghan Kish, the Superintendent for the newly created Blackstone Valley National Park, which includes the river and its tributaries, stated, “Although the final park boundaries are not known, the river is the backbone of the National Park and it's an incredible opportunity that has been handed to us to create a new model for incorporating a river

into a national park”.

The Speaking portion of Sunday's Celebration finished with Charlene Cutler, Executive Director of the Blackstone Heritage Corridor, Inc. She announced the Corridor's "GO!" Program, slated for the month of September, which will offer the public 109 opportunities to explore the Blackstone Valley including biking, paddling, hiking, and much more. The "GO!" Program is being promoted as an economic tool to connect people with many vibrant businesses throughout the 25 communities in the Valley.

Tom Bik of the Metacomet Land Trust and Blackstone Selectman Bob Dubois each addressed the crowd at the start of the Celebration event explaining how the bi-state park at the Blackstone Gorge was made possible through the vision and dedicated efforts of the Land Trust and towns to protect this unique resource from development. offered guided hikes of the trails that run along the river leading to breathtaking views of the dramatic hemlockwooded cliffs.

Also participating in the Celebration were Mass Audubon, Audubon Society of Rhode Island, Blackstone Headwaters Coalition, Blackstone River Watershed Association, Blackstone River Watershed Council/Friends of the Blackstone, Save the Bay, Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, RiverzEdge Arts, Worcester Tree Initiative and The Greenway Challenge. These grassroots organizations provided educational materials as well as fun kid activities.

Wonderful, river-based music was provided by William Monroe & Lee Aver, while Seaside Johnny’s made delicious food available to all.

Peter Coffin, BRC Coordinator, captivated the crowd with a historical journey on the Blackstone River utilizing a 50' mural of the river and its tributaries crafted by Riverzedge Arts in Woonsocket and laid out along the Gorge's boat ramp. He wove together a story of fish and people, dams and factories, conservation and water quality, showing everyone that the Blackstone's ongoing restoration will always require an understanding and appreciation of how this mighty river has existed over the centuries.

Womens Bible Study at Fairlawn

Coffee Break, a non-denominational community Bible study for women, will begin its Fall season with a study of the Book of Acts, Chapters 1-12, entitled “Be Dynamic: Experience the Power of God’s People.” The Fall season begins on Thurs., Sept. 10, at Fairlawn Church.

Christians as described in the Book of Acts were a dynamic people in a dynamic church and what they said and did changed their world. These studies will help participants understand: The ministry of the Spirit in the church, how to be an effective witness for Christ, how to turn persecution into blessing, and how to understand and solve problems. Refreshments and quality child care are provided with a loving nursery for infants up to age 2 and a story hour that your 3- to 5-year olds won’t want to miss!

Coffee Break is held each Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. and offers women in the Blackstone Valley an opportunity to read and discuss the Bible, share questions and concerns, and develop new friendships. Each lesson is independent, so if you can’t attend every week, you won’t feel “lost.” There’s no “homework” required, and no previous Bible knowledge is necessary. Study guides are provided free of charge.

Chivalry alive and well in Uxbridge Dear Editor, Chivalry is not dead! It is such a wonderful experience to be part of a community where people are willing to get involved and help. We would like to thank a few local heroes who stepped up to help our daughter. Recently she had car trouble right in the middle of the intersection in the center of town. Two Uxbridge Water Department workers jumped in without hesitation to help secure her vehicle and encourage her in a stressful time.

They waited with her until the police arrived, then Officer McDonald, Nick and Jim pushed her car out of traffic and waited with her until the tow truck arrived. Being a damsel in distress is never good; but being rescued by local heroes certainly is. Random acts of kindness like this, prove chivalry is not dead! Thank you to our heroes.

VBS students help those in need Dear Editor, The ecumenical Vacation Bible School was held July 13-17 at the Village Congregational Church in Whitinsville. The joys of VBS were many. One of the joys was knowing children were learning about God's love. Another joy was seeing the fun and cooperation between the 97 children at VBS and the 82 volunteers helping, encouraging and caring for the children.

The VBS children came from 18 churches including churches in Northbridge and from other towns. We welcome children from any town and from any church. Generous children and their parents brought their offering for the Peace of Bread Christmas Fund which will enable parents to give Christmas gifts to their children and for children to give Christmas gifts to their parents.

The VBS children also brought badly needed diapers and baby wipes for the Department of Children and Families. In addition, over 300 canned and boxed food items were donated to the NAC Food Pantry.

The VBS week was filled with Bible activities, singing, outreach projects, crafts, science experiments, recreation, sacred dance, bells, worship and refreshments.

We would like to thank everyone who donated or participated in anyway to make our week so awesome. We pray that God will continue to bless the children and the volunteers.

Representative David Muradian (RGrafton) joined Governor Charlie Baker, Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito, Senate President Stan Rosenberg, and other colleagues in front of the Grand Staircase at the State House in Boston to witness the signing of a bill that will increase the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

The EITC is a refundable tax credit for low to moderate income working individuals and families-particularly those with children. The new law increases the current Massachusetts EITC amount by 50%, which is 23% of the Federal EITC. This extends the maximum state credit from $951 to $1,459, making as much as $500 available in additional support to those who are eligible.

“I was proud to stand with Governor Baker to support this important law,” stated Rep. Muradian. “Over 400,000 low-income families in the Commonwealth will benefit from this important legislation. It will go a long way toward supporting hard-working Massachusetts citizens who need a little help making ends meet.”

Young honored for dedication

On Thursday, August 20th, Massachusetts State Representative Kevin J. Kuros (R-Uxbridge) presented a citation on behalf of the House of Representatives to Debra Young on the event of her retirement after 38 dedicated years of service to the patrons of the Uxbridge Public Library. Debra has had a significant impact on the Uxbridge Library throughout her years of service and will be greatly missed by the entire community.

Milford Regional has a particular need for volunteers to serve as emergency department visitor escorts. In this role, volunteers escort visitors from the emergency room lobby to see their family member who is a patient. Each shift is three hours, and shifts are available late morning, afternoon, evening and night any day of the week. This role is ideal for anyone looking to add steps to their day as it entails a lot of walking. Mr. MacDonald Andrews, Douglas resident and Raytheon Engineering Fellow, recently presented Maria with "The Big Check!" The Raytheon MathMovesU contest is designed to encourage students to show how "math puts the passion in their action." Maria did her project on how math is helpful in a veterinary career, a career field she hopes to pursue in the future. She will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship to attend a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) summer camp, and Douglas Middle School will also receive a matching donation of $1,000 to spend on STEM-related initiatives.

Maria was given a gift bag of prizes and two kits from Raytheon. Mrs. Jessica Findlay, Maria's math teacher, also provided encouragement and support for Maria to enter the contest.

My School Color Run to help Douglas Schools

Run, walk, or jog for a great cause!

The Douglas PTO in partnership with the Douglas Athletic Booster Club, Middle School PTO, and Middle School Student Council is hosting its first-ever My School Color Run at Soldier’s Field on Mechanic Street in Douglas.

The event will take place on Sunday, September 27th, to raise funds for the Douglas Public Schools. Participants can opt to do the 5K race or the 1-mile family walk, where they will be doused with food-safe colored powder before the race begins and then splashed with liquid color along the route. There will also be a special toddler run for ages 18 months-4 years prior to the race start.

K-9 Unit receives Over-heat Detector/Alarm

The Worcester County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce it is the recent recipient of a $2000 grant award

by Massachusetts Vest-a-Dog, providing two over-heat detector/alarm sys-

tems to the Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit.

The heat alarm systems are equipped to send an alert should the interior temperature of a vehicle exceed a preset limit, notifying the K-9 handler via a

Burton visits local athletes Steve Burton from WBZ TV channel 4 visited the High Hoops Summer League at the Hab in Uxbridge. He spent about 2 hours watching a few games while talking to the kids, signing autographs and taking pictures with many kids and parents. Steve is a huge

High Hoops program for the past 4 years. Dave's son Nicolas DeNorscia plays for the Grafton Heat Boys 5th/6th Grade team on Friday nights and is coached by his dad (Dave DeNorscia) as well as Nick Hirtle who is his assistant coach. Nick Hirtle is the son of Dean Hirtle from Uxbridge. Nick has been helping his dad run the High Hoops LLC program from the start and does a lot of volunteering working with kids. Nick said, "I love basketball and really enjoy working with the kids and doing something that I really love to do". "My dad has always been great getting other kids involved in helping out with the program and everyone enjoys working with the kids."

Steve Burton has always been a huge supporter of youth sports and appreciates everything that Hirtle is doing with his High Hoops program for kids. He tweeted out the night following his visit to the Hab that "Hirtle is doing great things for these kids."

Sunshine Club has a new parking spot for trips The Sunshine Club of the Douglas Senior Center now has a new parking spot for all of the trips. From now on the trips will originate from the WalMart parking lot in Whitinsville.

From November 16-19 the group will be going to the Lancaster Amish country for 4 days. The cost of $489.00 includes 2 shows: "The Miracle of Christmas" at the Sight and Sound Theatre and "A Christmas Story" at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre plus a backroads tour of the countryside, a visit to The National Christmas Museum, and a stop in Hershey. In addition to the dinner theatre, there will be a buffet dinner at Shady Maple and a family style all you

can eat dinner at Hershey Farm. Also in November, there is a trip to see "The Addams Family" musical on Sat, November 7 in Manchester, NH. For $82.00 enjoy the show, a buffet lunch at the Puritan Back Room, and all gratuities.

~Society ~ Greater Milford Community Chorus begins Fall Season

The Greater Milford Community Chorus will begin its Fall Season on September 9th. Rehearsals are held each Wednesday from 7:15 – 9:30 pm at the Memorial Hall Cultural Center, 30 School Street, Milford. New members will be welcomed 9/9, 9/16 and 9/23. Whether you sing soprano, alto, tenor or bass, they need you! Come sit in on a rehearsal on those dates to see if the GMCC is right for you!

Performances dates for this season are Dec. 5th & 6th and will be held in the auditorium at Milford High School, 31 West Fountain Street, Milford.

While auditions are not required, a rudimentary understanding of music and a willingness to work to benefit the sound is required. Chorus members come from many towns in the Greater Milford area. The chorus is under the

direction of Dan Zabinski of Uxbridge.

Membership fee is $25 for the season.

Time to uproot some Perennial Farming Myths

By Tim Buzby As California descends further into its worst drought in recorded history, Golden Staters are looking for someone to blame. Many city-dwellers have pointed fingers at the State's farmers and ranchers. But they're blaming the victims. As Governor Jerry Brown put it, "[a]gricultural water users… have borne much of the brunt of the drought to date… with significantly reduced water allocations and thousands of farmworkers laid off."

This misconception is only the latest in a long history of myths about American agriculture. It's time to plow under these myths and plant some seeds of truth about our nation's farmers.

Myth: Big corporations have taken over the industry.

The idea that most farms today are run by big business is a head scratcher.

Data from the Census Bureau show that 97 percent of the 2.1 million farms in operation in the United States are family owned. In total, 88 percent are small family farms.

• Myth: All farmers are rich.

Data from the USDA show that farm households make roughly the same income as the median American household. But that money mostly comes from off-farm sources -- such as a second job, Social Security, investment income and the like. The USDA reports that 70 percent of farm families have a second job. Clearly, these farmers are farming because they like the work, not because it's fattening their bank accounts.

• Myth: Farmers don't care about the environment.

No other industry on the planet depends more on a clean, sustainable environment than farming.

Farmers today are producing more with less. According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, farmers produce 262 percent more food with 2 per-

cent fewer inputs, such as energy, seeds, fertilizer, feed, compared with 1950.

Farmers have also cut back drastically on chemicals. Between 1980 and 2007, they reduced their use of pesticides by 20 percent.

• Myth: Food costs too much.

By any measure, food today is less expensive in America than ever before, thanks largely to the incredible increase in farm productivity over the years. As a result, American families spend a smaller share of their income on food, just 6.7 percent, less than families in any other country in the world. By comparison, families in France and Japan devote roughly 14 percent of their income to food.

• Myth: Farming is in decline.

Even though farming represents a small share of the job market, the farming industry remains a significant share of

the economy. Agriculture and agriculture-related industries accounted for $776 billion in GDP in 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Farm productivity has nearly doubled since 1980.

This economic strength is particularly important in America's rural communities. There, farming has been a crucial job creator, providing steady employment during the recession and creating new jobs in the years since.

What's more, U.S. agriculture is only going to grow. By 2023, agriculture exports are projected to be close to $175 billion, a roughly 25 percent increase from last year's numbers.

That's a future we can all benefit from. But to get there, farmers and ranchers need a little support in their home states and in Congress. And that support starts with a better understanding of who these Americans really are.

Today's farmers are producing more with less, making food more affordable, helping to protect the environment, and providing crucial jobs for rural communities. And they're doing it out of a love of farming.

Holistic health takes into account a philosophy to nurture and nourish the entire being: the Body, the Mind, and the Spirit. If we ignore any of these areas – we lack wholeness. The one ingredient that affects all three areas is our ability to love and accept ourselves exactly as we are. This is difficult for most people to do because we’ve been conditioned to look at our flaws and what “is wrong with us”.

This kind of perception is the most unloving and never produces the kind of energy for healing to occur. One of the most daily is to love and accept yourself exactly as you are. I was first introduced to this concept by Louise Hay and it’s become one of the fundamentally most profound practices I do and teach my clients to do in order to break free from criticism, judgement and fear that all of humanity has generationally suffered from.

We will never flourish into wholeness while we place our value and worth on anything outside of ourselves. There is the divine in each one of us and in order to heal it takes showing up for yourself and loving yourself unconditionally. As we do this, over time true shifts begin to occur as you experience what unconditional love and acceptance can do.

National report profiles Valley Tech

A new report from one of the nation's top education reform organizations highlights Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (Valley Tech) as a leading example of "what it takes to prepare students for the demands of college and 21st century careers."

The report entitled "Best of Both Worlds: How Massachusetts Vocational Schools Are Preparing Students for College and Careers" was released last month, by Achieve, an independent, nonprofit education reform organization leading the effort to make college and career readiness a priority across the country so that students graduating from high school are academically prepared for postsecondary success. The brief includes profiles of four Massachusetts school systems, including Valley Tech, which is credited as a key player in the transformation of the state's vocational technical schools from "places where struggling students could escape academic rigor" to systems that have successfully combined "full vocational curriculum with college-ready academic standards."

"The schools profiled in these briefs illustrate the meaningful role that states can play in ensuring that all students have access to rigorous academic learning content aligned to college and career real-world expectations," Alissa Peltzman, Vice President of State Policy and Implementation Support at Achieve, said in a recent press release.

"Achieve applauds these schools' efforts to help all students graduate from high school ready for their next steps."

In announcing the report’s release, Achieve credited David Ferreira, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators (MAVA), with citing Valley Tech and other highlighted schools as " 'the Cadillac model of the CTE world,' due to the way they integrate real-world learning, foster caring relationships, and focus on continuous improvement in service of student success."

Research on Valley Tech was conducted by Katie Bayerl, a writer, teacher, and editorial consultant specializing in helping schools and nonprofit organizations tell their stories.

Bayerl’s research included tours of Valley Tech’s vocational technical shops and academic programs; analysis of school statistics, curriculum, and schedules; and extensive interviews with students, teachers, and administrators.

"The team at Achieve is thrilled with the final report," Bayerl said. "For my part, I am still inspired by my visit to Valley Tech."

This money is part of $5 million in funding that Governor Baker recently restored to the budget. Blackstone Valley Tech kicks off new school year with cookout Where's there's smoke, there's fire, and sometimes burgers and hot dogs to go with it. Such was the case at Blackstone Valley Tech when incoming students and their families joined BVT staff and returning students for a Freshmen & New Student Barbecue. The popular annual event provides students and families the chance to get to know their new school and one another in a stress-free environment. Gathered on Valley Tech's front lawn with hundreds of other parents and guardians, Neil and Colleen Thomas of Milford said that their son, Cameron, is a junior in the Culinary Arts department and will soon be joined by his younger brother, Trevor, who is among 310 incoming freshmen.

"We're blown away by the school," Neil Thomas commented. "The students want to be here and the teachers want to be here. It's a great atmosphere. We're really looking forward to having both boys here."

Although their summer vacation was quickly winding down, many BVT sophomores, juniors, and seniors spent the afternoon at the annual cookout and drew on their own experiences to provide helpful tips to incoming students and parents.

Dental Assisting senior Chanell DaSilva of Grafton took the opportunity to let new students know about her programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s affordable customized mouth guards.

Following the annual barbecue, freshmen and new students returned to BVT for orientation. The first day of school for all grades took place August 17. Since 1997, BVT has voluntarily operated under an extended school year calendar of 193 teaching-days.

Thirty-four gymnasts from the McKeon Dance & Gymnastics Center in Hopedale traveled to Virginia to compete at the AAU Junior Olympic National Championships, which was held at the Boo Williams Sport Complex in Hampton, VA. Competitors from all over the US participated in the two day gymnastics portion of the week long event.

The McKeon club picked up 8 first place All Around Champion placements and first place Team Awards for their Level 4 and Xcel Bronze Teams.

Nursing Scholarship available for BSN Students

The Worcester District Medical Society Alliance is accepting applications for a BSN scholarship. Up to $2000 will be awarded to a student that has completed one year of a BSN or RN to BSN nursing program and is currently attending an accredited nursing program. Jim Darling has expert advice on Cesspools & Septic Tanks Story and photo by Constance Dwyer When you drive on Quaker Highway in Uxbridge, you’ll see a big sign that says, “Call Jim,” referring to Jim Darling whose office is located there; next door to his family home at 404 Quaker Highway where his Mother, Esther Darling, now in her 90s, still resides. If you are a homeowner or business owner with a cesspool or septic system, you can be sure you will find any potential problem resolved when you “Call Jim.” Jim Darling’s experience dates back to his Uxbridge High School days when he would work with his Dad every day after school. Jim is a 1967 graduate of Uxbridge High School.

It was in 1955 that his late Dad, John Darling, started the business and regularly said to son Jim, “All set to go.”

Upon his Dad’s retirement in 1987, Jim took over the business and is still ready to go 24/7, admitting “I am a workaholic.” His average day starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 7 p.m. although the hours are extended if there is a serious problem that needs to be solved. He tells his customers to “Call anytime” but his wife, Joyce, does remind him that he “works too hard,” but Jim says, “I do as much as I can and never stop. It’s a 11 to 12 hour day, 6 days a week, but I want to be there for anyone who needs me 24/7.”

With 48 years’ experience pumping and cleaning cesspools and septic tanks, he says, with his special smile, “People are happy to see me” because they know I generally can solve their problem in one day. “Problems are at the top of my list,” Jim adds.

Jim’s year-round service covers built up and offers reasonable prices. He has

Title 5 Certifications and is professionally licensed. Jim also can “dig up covers,” but if a customer wants to do the digging, “It doesn’t hurt my feelings,” he acknowledged with his pleasant smile. Most of his jobs are “maintenance” and he encourages his customers to keep their systems on a regular maintenance schedule to avoid unnecessary headaches and additional expenses.

Generally, cesspools and septic tanks can be cleaned every 3 years but he says, “I have a better idea if a tank needs to be pumped when I look at it.”

Jim said some of his customers prefer a pumping schedule every year, others choose 3 years and some go as long as 5 years.

Area resident named “Top 12 Individuals Who Made A Difference” Carla Kenney, LMHC, is a leading therapist in Central Massachusetts in the treatment of OCD and related disorders. GoLocalWorcester named her as one of the top 12 individuals who made a difference in Central Massachusetts in 2012 and she has been continuing to make a difference in the lives of many people affected by mental illness. Carla has worked in various settings such as hospitals, group homes, intensive treatment programs and schools in addition to working independently as a licensed behavior therapist at Cedar Associates in Worcester. Carla is affiliated with Massachusetts General Hospital and is a professional member of the International Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Foundation (www. iocdf.org). personal goal, is that people are getting help. They are learning what specific help they need and where to find it.

They are also connecting with others who have OCD and expert clinicians.

Someone can have this illness and see a therapist for years without successfully reducing their obsessional thinking and rituals and that is a problem. OCD can be treated effectively and symptoms can be well managed with the proper treatment. Apple Tree Arts Completion Campaign Chairs Apple Tree Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Barlow and Joanne Dufresne as cochairs of the nonprofit community school of the arts’ Completion Campaign to support the renovation of the Grafton Town House into a community performance arts center. The co-chairs will collaborate with Apple Tree Arts’ board of directors and major capital campaign committee on fundraising to complete the restoration of the townowned, 19th century building in which the school is the major tenant. Mr. Barlow has been the Director of Advancement at Worcester Art Museum and was Executive Director for 10 years of WICN Public Radio, a provider of NPR news and jazz. Ms. Dufresne was a Finance Budget Analyst at National Grid for 15 years and has provided financial consultant services to Apple Tree Arts for many

years. The total project cost to restore the Grafton Town House is $6.5 million, of which $4.5 million has come from a variety of sources including Community Preservation Act funds, town reserves and funds secured by

Apple Tree Arts from state and private grants and individual donors.

Construction now is underway to make the building fully accessible, allow for assembly use and meet the mandated requirements of the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board. The scope of the work includes a new addition to the back of the building to house the full service elevator and a fire-safe egress stairwell. Other improvements include: sprinklers, fire alarm/life safety systems, HVAC and electrical service upgrades, rebuilding of interior staircases and toilet rooms will be added and rebuilt. Prior projects have included replacement of the roof, restoration of fire escapes, exterior work to repair the portico roof and windows and improvements to make the first floor accessible.

The $2 million required for the Completion Campaign will allow Apple Tree Arts to finish the build-out of the second and third floors. Eight soundproof instruction and practice studios will be created, classrooms will be constructed and furnished, new administrative offices will be built, appliances purchased for a break room and a 150-seat performing arts center will be created in the Great Hall.

Additionally, exterior brickwork will be repointed; all windows restored and exterior trim work will be repaired and painted.

Meet the 2027 USA World Cup Soccer Champions

The team has upcoming tournaments in Northbridge and in Haverhill. The head coach Dan Walton of Uxbridge was “very happy with all the hard work that each player has put forth.” “ The girls work very hard in very hot and humid weather and really push one another to do their best.” “ After the practices, they joke around and they have all made many friends with their new team mates.” Coach Walton has had a lot of help from Coach Thierry Mann of Douglas and other local coaches.

The whole project is one of a few things that are free in life. All the coaching and field training time is at no cost to the families. The only costs are the shirts and the tournament fees which are split between the team. The team limits their weekly practices to the original team members to assure enough coaching staff on hand. They do however have free open group training run by professional youth soccer coaches throughout the summer. If your daughter is interested in attending, all

There is a local group of 7 and 8 year old girls who play for their respective town and club teams in the fall, winter and spring. Come summer, when most players take the time off and enjoy a vacation, these young girls work hard and hone their skills by training, scrimmaging and entering New England tournaments throughout the summer.

This is a group of young athletes from Millbury, Auburn, Worcester, Uxbridge and Douglas. The team self-named “Central Mass All Star Dynamites,” were put together by volunteer coaches and parents. The players will be playing with and against each other for the next ten years, they might as well be friends and share their soccer passion together.

It seems as though their hard work is paying off. The Dynamites have defeated local U10 town teams early in the year and had their first tournament at University of Rhode Island Campus in the “Goals 4 Rams” tournament. They went undefeated by beating Cape Cod Crusaders, Brazil Coneticut and a local central Mass team. They outscored

High Hoops holds first year of camp

Many kids from all over the Blackstone Valley Area participated in a highly anticipated High Hoops Summer Basketball Camp at the Hab in July. The kids had so much fun and it was a great experience for everyone.

The camp was run by Tony Cordani, Boys Varsity Basketball Coach of Hopedale High School. Coach Cordani has over 25 years of coaching experience and is one of the top coaches in Central Mass. "Coach Cordani is in his first year working with High Hoops LLC and we are very excited to have him on our staff" said Dean Hirtle, Basketball Director of High Hoops LLC. "Our camp is designed for boys and girls in grades K-7th and focuses on teaching the kids the fundamentals of the game". "Throughout the week each player is taught the proper techniques to develop their skills to be better basketball players". "We play games, run stations, focus on fundamentals, and have competitions each day" said Hirtle. "All the kids and our coaches did a fantastic job and we are very excited about growing our camp next year."

Each participant received many takeaways from camp. Coaches evaluations were conducted for each player to give them the feedback and confidence they need to become better players. They also received a High Hoops Basketball, Camp T-shirt, Certificate of accomplishment and a High Hoops summer camp plaque. Many kids left the camp inspired and enthusiastic about their overall experience. When asking the kids what was their favorite part of camp, many replied "everything."

Parents and relatives were all invited to a fun awards ceremony that took place on the last day of camp. The kids were asked to work with their coaches and create a skit to be preformed during the camps "Showtime" event which was held at the awards ceremony.
