Wreaths Across America welcomed Superintendent Michael Baldassarre and Taft Early Learning Center Principal Mark LaBossiere are pleased to share that Taft second-grade students recently participated in the Wreaths Across America initiative to honor Veterans. Last month, second-grade students lined up in front of the Taft school entrance waving small American Flags as police and fire escorted a truck filled with wreaths to honor Uxbridge Veterans, made its way around the school parking lot. Participating students interacted with volunteers from the truck and were able to touch wreaths while learning about the importance of the Wreaths Across America initiative. After departing from Taft Early Learning Center, the truck went on to deliver 74 boxes of wreaths, which were placed at 1,000 Veterans' gravesites at St. Mary's cemetery. In return, Taft second-graders colored paper wreaths to be sent to local veterans and active military service members.

"We are so thrilled our students were able to experience this special event," said Principal LaBossiere. "Our hope is that students recognize and learn about the meaning behind the wreaths and the value of honoring those who serve our country and community." Uxbridge Select Board Member John Wise was in attendance and added, "Watching all the children waving American Flags and chanting 'USA' was so wonderful to see. It made me proud of Uxbridge and our school District." ABOUT WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The organization’s mission is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at thousands of Veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond.

Holy Cross Rowing honors Rett Last month the Holy Cross Women’s Rowing Team held their Love-the-Fight-a-Thon at Our Lady of the Valley School in Uxbridge at The G.R.A.C.E. Center. The events ran from 6:00 a.m. Friday, December 15th through 8:00 p.m. Sunday, December 17th. These amazing women coordinated and plan this event on their own to honor the memory of Grace Rett, Holy Cross rower and beloved OLV alum, to commemorate her 62 hour 3 second continuous indoor rowing world record she set, and to raise money for Our Lady of Valley School. The Holy Cross Rowing team was joined by rowers from Marianapolis Prep, Cross Fit Final

Grace Rett, a 2014 graduate of Our Lady of the Valley passed unexpectedly while on a rowing trip with her Holy Cross team in Florida in January of 2019. The G.R.A.C.E. center known as the Grace Rett Athletic Complex and Education, represents all that was important to her. After 62 Hours $43,254 was raised and 754,251 miles where rowed. MRMC receives National Recognition Milford Regional Medical Center was recognized as a 2023 top teaching hospital in the nation by the Leapfrog Group. The hospital also received a Grade “A” in patient safety from Leapfrog for the eleventh consecutive time. The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization focused on healthcare safety and quality. Recognition from the nonprofit organization is one of the most prestigious honors hospitals across the country can earn. TOP TEACHING HOSPITAL DISTINCTION Milford Regional is one of only two hospitals in Massachusetts, five in New England and 74 across the country, to receive the coveted Top Teaching Hospital honor from Leapfrog. Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and one hospital in Connecticut, Maine and Rhode Island were among the others honored in New England. Milford Regional serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School in Worcester. To qualify for a top distinction from Leapfrog, hospitals must rank highest among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses the quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance including infection rates, practices for safe surgery, maternity care and preventing medication errors. “Teaching is an instrumental component of sustaining Milford Regional’s

clinical excellence and that’s why this national recognition of our academic efforts has significant meaning to us,” said Milford Regional Medical Center President and CEO Edward J. Kelly. “Our strong partnership with the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School continues to generate some of the best and brightest clinicians in the region.” LEAPFROG AWARDS MRMC WITH GRADE “A” FOR PATIENT SAFETY For the eleventh consecutive time, Milford Regional received an “A” for Patient Safety, a distinction recognizing the hospital’s achievements in protecting patients from accidents, injuries, errors and infections. The Leapfrog group’s patient safety grading comes out twice annually. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 30 national performance measures from the Centers for

"$

Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and other supplemental data sources. Together, those performance measures produce a single letter grade representing a hospital’s overall performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors. “Continuing to receive the highest safety grade underscores Milford Regional’s meticulous patient safety standards as we remain committed to advance our patient-centered mission with dignity, compassion and respect,” said Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Bert Thurlo-Walsh. Milford Regional Medical Center is a full-service, community and regional teaching hospital located in Milford, Mass. and serves patients from more than 20 towns in Central Massachusetts.

Hatred & Bigotry has no place in our town or anywhere To the editor:

zen who called upon all of us to oppose antisemitism. These symbols of hatred serve to intimidate each of us, because they symbolize taking away the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Within the past two months there have been NSC 131 flyers thrown on lawns. This group promotes White supremacy and antisemitism, bigotry against all LGBTQ+ persons, and a “brotherhood” standing in opposition to immigrants. The group was founded in Massachusetts and is most active in the New England area. 2. This calls for a response to promote our Town as a community where not only is everyone tolerated, but is wel-

We would like to draw attention to acts of hatred and bigotry which have occurred in Uxbridge, and to discuss appropriate responses. 1. Recently there have been multiple incidents of messages that people of certain skin color, gender, sexual orientation, or ethnic background are not welcome in Uxbridge. Symbols of pride month in June were torn down or publicly mocked. Pride month is not only a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community but is a voice for liberty and justice for ALL. come to live and work here, to be part of our changing and thriving Town. The Select Board has been asked to make a statement that stands against the recent acts of bigotry we have noted. We applaud the Board’s detailed and robust discussion and its plans to create a welcoming package for new citizens (see meetings of 11/13 and 11/27). We applaud the ongoing efforts of the Town Manager and other officials to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in Town government. However, this does not adequately address the present problem. By not making a formal and explicit statement, the acts of hatred can be seen as acceptable and within the realm of normal activity. * 3. What can be done? Contact the Select Board members urging them to

explicitly take a clear stand against bigotry and hatred in this Town. Talk to friends and family about the incidents noted. We did not ask that these problems be placed at our doorstep, but we can’t ignore them. Have you been affected by discrimination based on your religion, gender, sexual orientation or skin color? Do you know anyone who has? What feelings and responses came up for you? What do you think should be done to respond? In short, keep the conversation going. Silence and avoidance allow hatred and bigotry to continue. Reasonable people come to reasonable conclusions, and our strength is in community and dialogue. Sample of Statement: The Select Board of Uxbridge firmly endorses the rights of all persons, regardless of skin color,

gender, sexual orientation, or ethnic origin, to live peacefully in the Town. The only statements or activities not welcome here are ones which promote hatred and bigotry against any Uxbridge citizen. Linwood Mill residents thank local Veterans

UMass offering $5,000 scholarships

Recently Linwood Mill residents rallied together to support Veterans at Peabody Properties' sites: Bedford Green, Howard House, and Pleasant Street Apartments. Responding to the residents' generosity, Jacquie Cope, RSC, highlighted the most needed items were cleaning and personal care products. Linwood Mill residents delivered boxes of these essential items and crafted heartfelt "Thank You for Your Service" notes, personally signing each one for the 134 Veteran units across the properties.

The University of Massachusetts has announced that the top 10 percent of the Commonwealth’s future community college graduates will receive a minimum of $5,000 per year above federal and private financial aid if they enroll at one of the four nationally ranked UMass campuses in Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth and Lowell. The Community College Advantage Scholarship

(CCAS) is designed to incentivize highly talented community college students to finish their associate degree at one of the Commonwealth’s 15 community colleges, and then complete their bachelor’s degree at UMass. Douglas PTO partners with WPI to host free STEM event The Douglas Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) recently partnered with the WPI Pre-Collegiate Outreach Program (POP) to provide a free STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) event to Douglas students in grades K-5. Engineering Ambassadors from the WPI POP program gave an educational presentation on fire protection engineering and led a hands on activity. After students learned about the importance of fire protection engineering, they were given the task of creating their own fire protection device to pro-

tect a chocolate bar from the heat of a hair dryer. Students collaborated with one another and used different items such as cardboard, cotton balls and aluminum foil to engineer their own chocolate protection prototype. Students were then able to test their device to see if their engineering designs were successful in protecting the chocolate from the heat of the dryer much like fire protection engineers test their prototypes for the fire service. The PTO would like to thank the WPI Engineering Ambassadors for this unforgettable and educational event!

The public is also encouraged to attend the closing reception, which will include the announcement of the three People’s Choice Awards, on Friday, February 23, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibit will end right after the closing ceremony. Organizations we support are serving more people now than during the pandemic, with some seeing visits to their pantries this holiday season more than double compared to last year,” says ATG Integrated Marketing Manager Sarah Harrington, who leads the Haulin’ 4 Hunger program. With support from employees and

business partners like UniBank, Haulin’ 4 Hunger has continued to help meet increased demand local food pantries are facing. This holiday season, donations were made to Boys & Girls Club of Worcester, Friendly House, Jeremiah’s Inn, Marlborough Community Cupboard, South Worcester Neighborhood Center, St. Anne’s Human Services and Veterans, Inc.

Rep. Soter maintains perfect voting record State Representative Michael Soter, R-Bellingham, maintained a perfect voting record in 2023, participating in all 70 roll call votes recorded in the House of Representatives between February 1, 2023, and November 15, 2023. Representative Soter compiled a 100% attendance record this year by casting votes on several major policy initiatives during the first half of the 2023-2024 legislative session, including a comprehensive tax relief package that is expected to provide taxpayers with $561 million in savings this fiscal year and an estimated $1.02 billion in savings once the changes are fully implemented in 2026. Signed into law on October 4, 2023, as Chapter 50 of the Acts of 2023, An Act to improve the Commonwealth’s competitiveness, affordability and equity, the bill: • Doubles the Senior Circuit Breaker tax credit from $1,200 to $2,400, indexed to inflation, to assist nearly 100,000 seniors with their housing costs; • Eliminates the estate tax for all estates valued under $2 million and allows for a uniform credit of $99,600, effective January 1, 2023; • Combines the child and dependent tax credits into one while eliminating the existing cap and increasing the credit from $180 to $310 in FY23 and to $440 in FY24, which will benefit over 565,000 families; • Increases the rental deduction cap from $3,000 to $4,000, which will assist approximately 800,000 renters; • Raises the Earned Income Tax Credit from 30% to 40% of the federal credit, which will benefit approximately 400,000 taxpayers earning less than $60,000; • Allows municipalities to provide up to $2,000 in property tax reductions for older residents participating in the senior

work-off program, which is currently capped at $1,500; and • Reduces the tax on short-term capital gains from 12% to 8.5%. On November 15, Representative Soter joined with his colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass a long-term care oversight bill that will provide enhanced protections for patients as well as expanded training provisions for the industry’s workforce to help address persistent staffing shortages at nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. He also cast a vote against salary transparency legislation on October 4 which would require most employers to disclose the salary range for open positions on job postings, citing the potential negative cost implications for smaller businesses. On October 18, Representative Soter voted against a House-sponsored gun bill, saying it will do nothing to reduce crime and will instead have a negative impact on lawful gun owners in the Commonwealth. He also questioned how much the bill will cost to implement and noted that it was strongly opposed not only by the Gun Owners Action League, but also by the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, whose members voted unanimously to oppose the bill. Representative Soter also voted against a supplemental budget proposal on November 8 to allocate $250 million in additional funding to the state’s emergency shelter system to help pay for the recent influx of migrants seeking shelter in Mass. He cited the lack of a plan by the Healey-Driscoll Administration to stem the flow of migrants, which has pushed the state’s emergency shelter assistance program to its limits and created a strain on municipal finances as cities and towns struggle to house and educate these new arrivals. During floor debate on the bill, Representative Soter supported an amendment to prospectively limit future emergency housing services to individuals who have been residents of the Commonwealth for at least one year and can provide documented proof of residency. He/she said this is a reasonable policy change that will help ensure that long-term residents do not lose out on housing assistance to individuals who are newly arrived from out of state, but the amendment failed to pass. In 2023, Rep. Soter was also recorded in support of several supplemental spending & bond proposals, including bills that: • Provide universal free school meals for all students; • Allow municipalities to continue the use of remote and hybrid meetings, as well as reduced quorum requirements; • Authorize a one-year extension of outdoor dining options for restaurants; and • Provide $175 million in additional municipal grant funding to support several transportation-related initiatives. Rep. Soter represents the 8th Worcester District. He currently serves on the Committees on Financial Services, Revenue, Cannabis Policy, and Labor and Workforce Development.

The Uxbridge Senior Center hosted our annual Christmas gathering with all our friends on Thursday, December 14th. This event was sponsored by the Uxbridge Elderly Connection which is the Senior Center’s major fundraising organization. Tommy Rull was back to entertain us. We all enjoy his music and appreciate his enthusiasm. Everyone received Hannaford’s gift cards from the Uxbridge Elderly Connection and received hand towels and dish cloths from the Uxbridge Knitting Group. A special donut treat was also provided by our Activities Coordinator, Sally Selvidge. Those that attended were served a delicious ham lunch, including all the fixings, cooked by our own chef, Pat Ordway. Hannaford’s Market donated the dinner rolls and the holiday pie. We appreciate their ongoing support and contributions. We also received a visit from State Rep Mike Soter who helped us serve the lunch. We also had a special visit from Santa, aka Russel Wise. Thank you for making our party very special! Thank you to all our staff and volunteers for making this celebration such a success! The Uxbridge Senior Center wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happiest New Year for 2024! If you are interested in attending the Center or hearing about all our programs and services, please reach out to Lisa Bernard, Director, at 508-278-8622. The Center is located at 36 South Main Street in Uxbridge.
