Dog Park planning unleashed Story & Photo by Constance Reddy Dwyer At a recent meeting at the Uxbridge Police Station with Officer Josiah Morrissette and Uxbridge resident Cindy Scott, plans for a Dog Park in Uxbridge were discussed with great enthusiasm. “A small group of us, as volunteers, discussed a dog park here almost 3 years ago and we went before Town Meeting, the Board of Selectmen and Planning Board to show our plans and gain the support we needed,” said Cindy. “It actually began in 2013 when Laura Hamel started a Facebook group, ‘Uxbridge Dog Park.’ A small group of interested people began meeting on a regular basis. We did a lot of research, visited other dog parks, reached out to other towns that had dog parks for their experience and suggestions and we met with Town leaders for advice.” She further

added that it wasn’t until a year ago when the group met Officer Josiah Morrissette, that, “things really started to move forward more quickly with our goal.” Officer Morrissette was also working on bringing a dog park to Uxbridge and was planning to submit a grant request to the Stanton Foundation. Officer Morrissette, the grant writer for the Police Department, used his skills in obtaining funding for the dog park. What began in Mendon in 1975 will continue on Saturday, October 8th as the Mendon Lions present the 41st annual Country Fair at The Blessing Barn on Rte.16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event has changed little over the years with country music throughout the day, dairy animals on display, crafters and vendors displaying their wares, free wagon rides and great food. Just as it was set-up to do over 40 years ago, the country fair continues to offer nonprofit groups a free booth to raise funds for their causes. Thousands of dollars have been raised by these groups over the years. This year's stage entertainment features "The Villanaires" singing those great memory songs of the 50's and 60's. Other features of the fair include the pumpkinlaunching competition and Kids Fair with magic shows, face painting, pie-eat-

The menu includes hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and pepper subs, meatball sandwiches, french fries and fried dough. Ice cream and watermelon will also be available along with cold drinks and coffee. The Mendon Lions Club thanks the major sponsors including Charles River Bank, Imperial Cars, Dean Bank, Custom Alarm, Worldband Computer Consultants, Willowbrook Restaurant, Tinio Corporation, Milford Federal Savings and Eastern Security Safe. Admission to the fair is free to all. Parking is available for a donation to the Mendon Boy Scouts. All proceeds realized will go to The Mass Lions Eye Research Fund and community projects. request to the Stanton Foundation. Our group became a Committee once we were approved for the grant and we are now in the process of raising our portion of the required 10% of construction money. Right now, that’s about $17,000. We have some great volunteers but are always looking for more.” This grant covers 100% of the funds needed for the design phase of the project. The grant will cover 90% of the construction costs with the expectation that the remaining 10% will be contributed by the town. To this end, the first fundraiser for the “Uxbridge Dog Park” is planned for Sunday, October 23rd, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a popular spaghetti dinner at the Uxbridge VFW, located at 16 Cross St., in Uxbridge. Tickets are $15 per person or $30 for a family up to 4. For more details, check out dogparkcommittee@uxbridge-ma.gov, or online continued on page 16
