Fire Station nears completion by Susan franz Everyone driving through downtown uxbridge has watched with interest the tremendous progress on our new Fire station. the station is now in its final construction phase and thoughts are turning to recruiting new on-call members and the opportunities the new station will provide to improve service. One such potential opportunity is to expand recruiting for on-call EMs personnel outside of the town’s borders to cover second ambulance call shifts. the additional housing space in the station can be used by out of town EMs personnel who are covering a per diem shift. the extra space also lets on-call fire personnel stay closer to the equipment during harsh weather events. the uxbridge Fire department is experiencing the same issue of almost every department across the country with on-call fire fighters: the need for new members. they are currently undergoing a recruitment campaign. On-call fire fighter candidates complete a four-month training program

during evenings and weekends. the Massachusetts Fire academy sponsors the training program free of charge and teaches recruits in fire fighting methods, safety and equipment usage, and professional procedures for incident response. recruits who successfully complete the program will be nationally certified as fire fighters. since the uxbridge Fire department will provide the personal protective equipment necessary for the program, the only investment for a candidate is time and transportation to attend the classes. it is a great opportunity to learn a new skill, serve your community, and join the dedicated and hardworking team red who daily protect our health, safety, and homes. the uxbridge Fire department is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes all inquiries about becoming an on-call fire fighter. if you would like an application, a tour of the facilities, or if you have any questions, please contact terri russell at 508-278-2787 or email: trussell@ uxbridge-ma. gov.
