Voters reject additional pot shops and grow facilities By Christine Beauchaine The Town of Uxbridge held it’s fall town meeting on October 22nd Article one, if approved would have transferred money to the town’s stabilization fund. However, due to recent personnel changes in the treasurer and account’s offices, the town was unable to certify free cash and this article was passed over. Article seven, which involved paying bills from prior fiscal years was also passed over. Voters agreed to transfer the McCloskey School property to the board of selectmen. This property is no longer being used by the town as a school. The board of selectmen will develop a plan for reusing or selling the property. However, residents voted against the sale of a town owned property on Millville Road. Voters agreed to replace a fire department vehicle used for fire inspections, a machine used for clearing snow from sidewalks and a dump truck used by the DPW. Residents elected not to amend zoning bylaws which would have allowed more marijuana retail establishments. Currently, the bylaw allows for three. The amendment would have increased that number to six. A zoning bylaw amendment to increase the amount of marijuana cultivators also failed to pass. Caroline’s Cannabis, Uxbridge’s first (and right now, only) retail

marijuana shop opened in March and appears to be thriving. However, some voters expressed concerns on social media about diluting business. In addition to the marijuana related bylaws, voters also failed to approve a wetlands bylaw sponsored by the conservation commission. The regular town meeting concluded and at approximately 10:00 p.m, the special town meeting convened. Voters discussed and approved amendments to create a multi -town mixed commerce district (MTMC). Voters also approved money for water infrastructure improvements at the Blackstone Street well field and the Route 16 Water Loop. A motion to rejoin the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project failed. The special town meeting concluded at 11:17 p.m. NORTHBRIDge VOTeRS APPROVe HISTORIC DISTRICT Northbridge also held its fall town meeting on the same evening. Among other issues discussed, voters in that town, approved the creation of a historic district in downtown Whitinsville. The area will include several properties which are currently either owned by the town or by non-profits. Approval of this bylaw will help garner support from the National Parks Service as part of the Blackstone River Valley National Historic Park.
