DeToma ran Marathon to help homeless families John DeToma of Uxbridge trained hard to run the Boston Marathon on April 15th. DeToma’s goal was even bigger than completing 26.2 miles, he raised funds in support of FamilyAid Boston, a local nonprofit that empowers parents and caregivers facing homelessness. This nonprofit set out to secure and sustain housing and build strong foundations for their children’s futures. John DeToma ran the Boston Marathon in 5:04:34 and raised $11,030 for FamilyAid Boston.

This is DeToma’s sixth marathon. He really wanted to run Boston this year, and he feels lucky that he had the chance to run on the FamilyAid Boston’s team. “I was looking for someone to give me a chance and FamilyAid Boston did just that.

Massachusetts saw the largest growth in family homelessness in the country last year, a dramatic 17% increase.

Boston now has the third highest num-

ber of people in families experiencing homelessness (3,653) on any given night. This number includes more than 2,000 children.

Over the past year FamilyAid Boston provided over 1,570 parents and children with shelter, housing, and support services needed to return to stable housing. Families who are placed in housing by FamilyAid Boston have a 99% success rate of remaining housed a year later.

Through the John Hancock Marathon Nonprofit Program, and the dedication and support of FamilyAid Boston’s Marathon team, FamilyAid Boston hopes to raise more than $100,000 to create lasting solutions to the family homelessness crisis in our community.

Veterans to honor 75th Anniversary of Bomber Crash The Uxbridge Veterans will celebrate the 75th anniversary and memorial service of the B-24 Liberator Bomber Crash on Sunday May 19th at the crash site off Chamberlain Road at 12 noon.

On May 18th, 1944, three B-24 Liberator bombers were changing formation over Uxbridge while flying at 10,000 feet. One of the B-24 Liberators collided with another cutting off its tail section and putting it into a downward spiral spin nose first into the ground killing 5 of 7 crewman instantly. A huge fireball erupted causing a large forest fire and filling the sky with thick black smoke which could be seen for miles.

Two of the seven airman were able to parachute to safety into the wooded area off High Street.

Killed in the crash were 2nd Lt.

Every year they have several residents who were witnesses to the crash share their experiences with them. They have also had family members from the airman onboard that day attend the event over the years, and were honored that they still hold a service to honor their family members.

Lasell Field can be a source of pride again Dear Editor: I have been associated with Northbridge High School, and more specifically, Lasell Field for 54 of the last 58 years. Four of those years as a player, 50 as a coach, and the four lost years I was away at college.

Lasell Field has always been a source of pride in town, especially in the early years with our grass surface and our cinder track. We hosted Football Jamborees at the beginning of many seasons as our field was considered one of the best fields in Central Mass. In the 1960’s, we hosted track meets on our cinder surface and people would come from all over Central Mass for our track. In 1996 we celebrated 100 years of Northbridge High School Football and the addition of lights for night

games was another source of pride.

Over the years, the field held up pretty good, but use of the field consisted only of football. In the 1980’s, soccer was added and years later, lacrosse.

Field hockey also uses the field especially for night games. With increased programs, and multiple teams in each program, over use was inevitable.

Increased field space was never addressed and play continued on our one game field.

I remember after the lights were added, many of our opponents spoke highly of the Friday night atmosphere.

But what was always a sense of pride in our field and our programs, has now become an embarrassing situation. I find myself apologizing to my opponents for our poor field conditions, and

I am sure coaches in other programs do the same. What is also embarrassing is having to cancel home games due to poor field conditions which is a reality we now face.

An attempt was made four or five years ago to make a temporary fix to the field. Sod was placed down the middle of the field costing the town between $30,000-35,000. Obviously this was money wasted as the condition of the field is worse than ever and,

again “overuse” was not addressed. It is said that one turf field is equal to having four grass fields based on use.

As a former Softball coach at NHS for 17 years, I understand a concern for losing the present field. I also realize it is a much easier solution to relocate one program as opposed to five programs. I was the coach during two of the most successful teams in softball history at Northbridge and can say that we continue to have pride in the Softball program. I was also part of a group of parents who constructed the infield and built the dugouts so I know first hand how a group of people can create the

same atmosphere.

I can assure you that the football team will not use poor field conditions as an excuse to not put out a competitive product because we pride ourselves on our approach. But it sure would be nice to have pride in our home field once again.

Armenian history a learning tool for this generation Dear Editor, April 24th, 2019 was certainly a sacred day, as it marked the 104th commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. Our Armenian history is well documented, save for a select few who seem to think that having a revisionist’s view of history somehow changes it. It will never be forgotten that on April 24th, 1915, most Armenian doctors, educators, writers, intellectuals, lawyers and community leaders were rounded up and viciously killed, or forced into death marches. This massacre left over 1.5 million Armenian dead from the actions of Young Turk Government members.

Genocide across the world has had a profound effect, and there is no doubt that this was a horrific incident, encased in a horrid part of history. Unspeakable crimes, committed by undeserving-to-mention individuals, and by a community and government who still to this day overwhelmingly denies this history.

We must recognize the happenings of 104 years ago.

Wounds heal, but scars certainly remain. The healing process truly begins when all involved take responsibility for their

role. We will never be able to change what happened, but we can all help with continuing to educate, so that history never repeats itself.

Armenian-Americans and human rights supporters must continue to teach individuals of this history, and show pride in the Armenian heritage. We must take time to reflect and remember all of our family and friends whose lives were taken away from them. There is no mistake that we have a dark cloud hanging over our heritage due to horrific actions from others. However, we also have a ray of sunshine shining through, and that is our successes and survival.

The Armenian diaspora, although heartbreaking in its impetus, has given Armenian people a new opportunity. This opportunity gives us the chance to prove that we, and our culture, will survive and flourish everywhere that we live, throughout this great world.

Garden Club Plant Sale

Radishes, Squashes and Beans – Oh, My! Once again the Uxbridge Community Gardens has made hundreds of packets of free seeds available to Valley residents at the Uxbridge Public Library.

Stop by to browse the exciting varieties of vegetables and flowers, both common and unusual. Make this the year that you grow something different, perhaps some “Salad Rose” radish or the fascinating curved and ribbed “Armenian” Cucumber. Plan to brighten up the kitchen table in July with a colorful bouquet of Zinneas or twine some “Heavenly Blue” Morning Glories on your garden fence.

The free seeds are donated by Ocean State Job Lot to the URI Community Outreach program. From there they are distributed to non-profit groups who request them in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The seeds currently available at the library were organized and presented by members of the Uxbridge Community Gardens. They coordinated the orders for various groups in Uxbridge including the People First Food Pantry, Public Library, Quaker Meetinghouse Association and several others.

If you’ve run out of space or sunlight in your home garden, consider joining the Community Gardens as they launch the eighth season at their sunny location on Sutton Street. There is still space available for the 2019 season and a 20’x25’ garden can be had for $20 per year. Trash responsibly program expanded to protect storm drains The month of May has a little more meaning this year in the Blackstone River Valley. By way of Gubernatorial Proclamations issued in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island, the month of May has been declared Storm Drain Awareness Month.

In the middle of planning for spring cleanup season, Bonnie Combs, marketing director at the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor (BHC), sought out to file Gubernatorial Proclamation requests to both states to declare the month of May as Storm Drain Awareness Month.

By mid-April she learned in the same week that both were reviewed and approved, fulfilling a long-term goal to create awareness about the role storm drains play in carrying litter and harmful pollutants to the waterways of the bi-state Blackstone River Watershed, and eventually to the bay and ocean.

“In 2015, BHC launched ‘Trash Responsibly,’ a program to create awareness about the impact litter has on our natural resources here in the Blackstone River Valley,” Combs explained. She is the organization’s marketing director and also manages the Trash Responsibly program. Combs works with the 25 communities of the National Heritage Corridor to plan and coordinate cleanup and recycling events, and over the years she has brought awareness to fishing line and Styrofoam

recycling programs. This year she decided was the year for storm drains.

When planning the Blackstone River WatershedWide Cleanup with the Blackstone River Watershed Association and Blackstone River Watershed Council/Friends of Blackstone this year, Combs suggested they offer an “Adopt-aStorm Drain” option so that volunteers could pick their level of commitment. “It was a way to introduce the concept and the photos of dirty storm drains on the flyer sure got people’s attention.”

For the first year of the Storm Drain Awareness Month campaign, Combs hopes that people will choose to adopt a storm drain on their street, in their neighborhood, in their town, or even where they work or go to school. “I’d love to see people choose a storm drain that they see often and pledge to keep it clean of litter and debris and be mindful of harmful pollutants that find their way to the drains,” Combs shared. “I’m hoping once people make the connection between what lands on the grates of the storm drains and how it and other pollutants wash down and end up in our rivers, streams and oceans, that they’ll want to help prevent that from happening. It will help protect local wildlife, improve water quality and eventually help prevent the spread of what is known as Plastic Ocean.”

For anyone looking to actively engage in the

storm drain awareness campaign, Combs suggests selecting a storm drain and using the Google Maps feature to determine the GPS coordinates. “I’d love to receive photos and map info to track participation and support. I’d really like to see how far this campaign spreads and how much of an impact it can make.”

With the help of volunteers from BHC’s Volunteers-In-Parks program, educational programs are planned for Storm Drain Awareness Month utilizing the Enviroscape table-top watershed model, a hands-on, interactive activity that demonstrates the sources and effects of water pollution. “We have volunteers who are trained to present this program to school and community groups,” Combs explained. For anyone looking to learn more about the Enviroscape and receive training, a Volunteer Skills Workshop has been scheduled for Monday, May 6th at 6:30 p.m. at the Blackstone Heritage Corridor office, 670 Linwood Avenue, Whitinsville, MA. This storm drain awareness initiative was inspired by a particular storm drain she recalls walking by on the way to a meeting a few years ago to discuss plans for a recycling event. “It was a double-wide storm drain and it was covered with litter,” she remarked. “It was at a busy crosswalk and it was also stenciled in English and Spanish with the message ‘Keep It Clean – Protect Your Water.’ I snapped a photo and that image has stuck with me all these years.”

One year later, at an Earth Day cleanup, the Blackstone River Watershed Association was giving away “Dwayne the Storm Drain” coloring books produced by the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) and Combs

brought a copy back to the office to add her to research. She later connected with MWRA’s School Program Coordinator and received shipments of the book for her own environmental programming. Earlier this spring, “Dwayne the Storm Drain” books were brought to the Green Team students at Taft Elementary School in Uxbridge, MA, for a reading and discussion about pollutants that impact water quality and how the students could help by adopting a storm drain in their neighborhood.

A couple of years ago, Combs also worked with the Blackstone River Watershed Association to borrow storm drain stencils for a volunteer project with a local church group looking to do community service. “I had contacted the Uxbridge Department of Public Works about stenciling a storm drain near my office that fed right into the Mumford River and they were very supportive,” Combs recalls. “The project was very eye-opening for many after we did the stenciling, we cleaned up the area where litter had washed into the river.”

After volunteering one year with Save the Bay on a storm drain marking project in Woonsocket, RI, which involved the application of round discs above the storm drain with epoxy glue, Combs received a box of the same discs from the Blackstone River Coalition and used them for a “Kids Trash Responsibly” program in Blackstone, MA, and Millville, MA. This year, Combs requested that the organization’s annual application for the Narragansett Bay Commission’s Earth Day Grant be focused on storm drain marking supplies to help bring the program to more communities. In early April, BHC received word the grant was approved.

When seeking the proclamation request in Massachusetts, Combs reached out to State Representative David Muradian, who once helped her acquire one for Save the Frogs Day which is April 30th every year. In 2016, Combs had participated in Roger Williams Park Zoo’s citizen science project for monitoring frogs and worked with Rep. Muradian that spring on acquiring the Gubernatorial Proclamation. In Rhode Island, she reached out to Senator Joshua Miller on the matter, who introduced a Senate Resolution declaring May as Storm Drain Awareness Month. Combs also worked with the Rhode Island Governor’s office on a Gubernatorial Proclamation.

Town clean-up a success To the Editor, The Board of Health would like to thank all those who participated in the Uxbridge Town-wide Clean-up Event held on Saturday, April 6th. The event was sponsored by the Board of Health and the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. This year, more than 140 volunteers participated, making this our biggest cleanup event to date. Volunteers were assigned to over 90 streets in town and did a fabulous job.

This was an important event that brought together volunteers from diverse backgrounds. Green Teams from Uxbridge Public Schools, Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts, neighborhood groups, local businesses, students including members of the Uxbridge High School field hockey team, municipal officials, and local families and residents from surrounding communities and Rhode Island joined in to pick up trash along town streets. It was especially encouraging to see many young people who may be participating in their first community service activity.

We would like to extend our thanks to Bonnie Combs and the Blackstone Heritage Corridor for help coordinating this event. A special thanks to Premeer Real Estate and Think Local Printing for donating t-shirts for the event and to Tom Berkowitz Trucking for donating a dumpster. We would also like to thank Koopman Lumber, Hannaford Supermarkets, Uxbridge House of Pizza, Papa Gino’s, Jumbo Donuts and Dunkin’ Donuts at Lackey Dam Road for their donations. Lastly, this event would not have been possible without

the assistance of the Uxbridge Department of Public Works who graciously agreed to pick up bags from over 90 streets in town.

BHC to host Corridor Chats Event includes paddle on Hopedale Pond and Parklands Bird Walk Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor (BHC) is hosting its next Corridor Chats event on Thursday, May 2nd at the historic Little Red Shop Museum (12 Hopedale Street, Hopedale) from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The free event will include an optional paddle at Hopedale Pond departing at 3:00 p.m. and a guided bird walk in the Hopedale Parklands departing at 4:30 p.m. The paddle is being offered by BHC’s Blackstone Valley Paddle Club, a volunteer-led program now in its 19th year, and the bird walk is being offered

by BHC’s volunteer Birding Ambassadors.

BHC launched its first Corridor Chats event in March at the Hearthside House Museum in Lincoln, RI, and is a program designed to create a networking opportunity for those interested in learning more about the National Heritage Corridor and develop relationships for programming, volunteering, and more. According to Bonnie Combs,

Marketing Director at BHC, the event will move around the Corridor every other month and as a result it brings different people together to explore and learn more about the history, the culture, the people and the places that inspired the Congressional designation of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor.

“There were some exciting connections made at the first Corridor Chats event,” noted Bonnie Combs, Marketing Director at Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor. “In addition to bringing people to some historic sites that they’ve never visited before, we also have the great pleasure of meeting new people who are interested in learning more about the work we do

preserving and promoting the natural, historical, cultural and recreational resources throughout the 25 communities of the Blackstone River Valley.”

It’s also an opportunity for people to engage with BHC’s Executive Director, Devon Kurtz, along with BHC staff and volunteers from the Volunteers-InParks program.

Equipment drive to benefit youth in the DR Senior Kelly Heney, of Douglas, has known for a while that she wanted to do something impactful to leave her mark at Marianapolis. She decided to combine her love of softball and her Dominican heritage to collect softball and baseball equipment to be donated to local youth sports in the Dominican Republic.

“I wanted to do something that was a little bit different and would make more of a personal impact,” Kelly said.

Kelly’s mother Carlixta is originally from the Dominican Republic. Through family members, Carlixta was connected with Frank Medina of Club Deportivo y Cultural Los Saludables, INC in Santo Domingo. The organization aims to keep local youth off of the dangerous streets through participation in sports.

In the late fall, Kelly began collecting equipment at Marianapolis. To cover the cost to ship the items, she held bake sales. As captain of the softball team this year, Kelly wanted to get her team involved as a way to bond before the season began.

“One of the biggest reasons I wanted to do this was my team,” she said. “I feel like the softball team hasn’t had as many traditions in the past and I thought it would be nice to instill some traditions before I graduate.”

In the end, Kelly was able to fill four large boxes with equipment which included more than 20 bats, 25 gloves, two sets of catcher’s equipment, helmets, cleats, and sneakers. Over March break, Kelly, her mother, and brother Philip ’21 traveled to the Dominican Republic to visit family, but also to ensure that the equipment was delivered.

“It was hard to see the fields they play on and their conditions,” Kelly said.

“As a softball player you go to a certain field and think oh this field isn’t great, but their baseball fields are complete dirt and have barbed wire on top of the walls. Sometimes you don’t realize how lucky your life is compared to somebody else.”

She also explained that the hardest part was that there wasn’t enough equipment to give something to every child. “All of the boys were so excited to get the stuff,” she said. “It was worth it just to see their faces.”

Kelly hopes that this tradition will continue with the softball team after she graduates. “I would love to thank those who helped me make this possible, especially those who donated, my team, and my family. I feel it’s important to give credit, especially to the Marianapolis community, since I had a lot of help making this possible,” she said.

Marianapolis Preparatory School is a coeducational, Catholic boarding and day school offering college preparation for students from the United Sates and 20 foreign countries. Established in 1926, Marianapolis is one of the oldest independent Catholic schools in New England.

BVT Students to compete at Auto Show

Lions host May 4th Shredding Event Ridding the world of unnecessary documents securely and recycling that paper efficiently is the goal of the semiannual Shred Event sponsored by the Uxbridge Lions Club. This spring it will be held on Saturday, May 4th from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the VFW parking lot on Route 16 in Uxbridge. Pellegrino Trucking will be on hand to shred on site and On Site Computers will certify hard drive destruction and dispose of small electronic devices. These services will be performed for $5 per copy paper sized box of paper items and for hard drive destruction and small electronic devices as well.

Other spring activities include scholarship awards to Uxbridge High School seniors and a donation to UHS drama program, contributions to local students for summer camp at Clara Barton Camp for children with diabetes and partnerships for community members needing assistance for hearing aids or with vision concerns. Further, the Lions support the Uxbridge Baseball Association, the Uxbridge Elderly Connection and Senior Center and Beautify Uxbridge. Funds raised this year also

After being named the best in the Commonwealth, Blackstone Valley Tech Automotive Technology seniors Nick Uhlman and Aidan Luetkemeyer, both from Upton, went to New York City to compete in the 2019 National Automotive Technology Competition last month.

Held against the backdrop of the New York International Auto Show, this competition brings together the nation’s best high school automotive technicians to test their skills, measure their knowledge, and challenge their ability to diagnose and repair vehicles. Designed to be relevant in the real world, this competition reflects the knowledge and skills that are in demand for success in today’s technologically advanced automotive industry.

The Cat Fanciers’ Federation, in conjunction with the non-profit club "Purrfect Feline Friends," will hold it's annual “Swing Into Spring” all breed cat show on Saturday and Sunday, May 4th-5th, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. each day at the Saint Joseph Parish Hall, 1303 Mendon Road, in Cumberland, RI (follow the long driveway to hall in back).

The Purrfect Feline Friends club is a Rhode Island branch of the Cat Fanciers’ Federation which features household pets, particularly those that have been rescued or have an unknown background.

Many breeds of felines will be shown and will compete for "purrfection" in four different rings. Categories include Championship, Grand and Master Grand Championship, a kitten division, and household pet.

Fontaine earns rank of Eagle Scout

History revisited at Wheelock House The snow had piled so high at the Simeon Wheelock House for the past two years that March meetings had to be cancelled. Thankfully this year, the third week of March arrived with no ‘weather issue’ so the Deborah Wheelock Chapter, DAR, meeting on Wednesday the 20th, the first day of spring, proceeded as scheduled.

One main objective of the Daughters of the American Revolution is education. Annually, an essay contest is sponsored for students from grades 5 through 12. Members were pleased to welcome a winner of the American History essay contest from the 5th grade at the Whitin School. McKenna Savage, daughter of John and Deanna Savage, read her essay on the 2018-19 topic: “Women’s Suffrage - 100th Anniversary”. Looking at history from a 21st century perspective, it was startling to be reminded that at one time “criminals, the insane, idiots, and women” were denied the right to vote by many state legislatures! Ms. Savage received a framed certificate and Men of Iron, a biography of sailors serving on the USS Constitution during the War of 1812 and memento of the 100th anniversary of that historic time for which Massachusetts DAR had raised funds for research and publication.

Professor John Ambacher of Framingham State University was the evening’s speaker. He has done extensive research on the Civil War and a relative who was a member of the 98th Regiment from Pennsylvania. Photos from the earliest days of photography were displayed, including fascinating family pictures and those of other 98th Regiment members sent to him by the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Prof. Ambacher concluded his remarks

with a reminder that “asking questions and recording interviews with older family members” is critical to ensure captured of each generation’s history.

Massimo Fontaine of Boy Scout Troop 316 in Douglas, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony held March 23rd at St. Denis Church. Douglas Boy Scout Troop 316 was formed in 2014 and Massimo, age 16, is the first scout from his troop to achieve the Eagle Scout rank, which is scouting's highest honor.

Massachusetts State Representative Joseph McKenna was in attendance to present Massimo with an official commendation and to give a speech.

In order to become an Eagle Scout, Massimo had to earn 21 merit badges, participate as a leader in his troop, and complete a service project. In September 2018 Massimo and a crew made up of Troop 316 scouts and other friends and family built a bridge and cleared a trail on the Leon Mosczynski conservation land on Manchaug Street in Douglas.

By Mendon Street Kitchen removing all their plastic water bottles from the café, we are playing our part in reducing 1500 plastic bottles being used every single second in the United States. This type of impact on our natu-

ral environment will have an ever lasting impact on all species living on this plantet, including us humans. Nearly 70 percent of all plastic water bottles never get properly recycled and end up in our oceans. The plastic never goes away and only breaks down into smaller pieces that get ingested by marine animals, which has affected over 270 different marine species and makes its way up the food chain.

With this being said, all of us individually have the power to make a difference in the community around us. We at Mendon Street Kitchen take this to heart by “Leaving this world, a better place than how you found it.” (from Sarah Maas). There are many environmental benefits to aluminum can water as alterna-

tive to plastic. The aluminum can be recycled indefinitely into other aluminum products without using other new materials with the progress taking as little as 60 days. Aluminum gets recycled more often than any other beverage container, which includes plastic, glass and cartons. The water in the aluminum can gets cold quicker and will last longer with the cold temperature.

“Legacy of Courage” Awards presented at Safe Homes Gala Worcester County’s only peer-led LGBTQ and teen program recognizes key supporters. Open Sky Community Services is pleased to announce the 2019 recipients of the People of Courage Awards to be awarded at the 2019 Annual Safe Homes Gala scheduled for May 3rd at the AC Marriott in Worcester. The 2019 theme is “Legacy of Courage,” with all of the awardees demonstrating the willingness to stand up in support of respect, recognition, and inclusion for LGBTQ+ communities in Central Massachusetts.

This year, the award recipient for the Public Service Award is Jordan Evans, Vice Chairwoman of the Charlton Public Library Board of Trustees, who also serves as a town constable and is a Dudley-Charlton Education Foundation board member.Using her personal experience of coming out as transgender, Evans has become a sought-after advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. As part of the “Yes on 3 Campaign,” she was instrumental in having the Charlton Board of Selectmen and Library Board adopt resolutions formally joining the coalition to uphold transgender public accommodations.

2019’s Young Adult Award recipient is Tatalia Hamilton. A peer leader at Safe Homes since 2015, Hamilton is a tremendous asset to the Safe Homes community as she regularly runs groups focusing on topics such as racism, beauty standards in our society, and coming out.

The Worcester Historical Museum is the recipient of the 2019 Corporate Award. The museum has been the recip-

ient of a $15,000 grant for a project on the history of the LGBTQ+ community in Worcester County. This program includes the collection of oral histories, the creation of an LGBTQ+ archive, and educational programming to complement an exhibit on Gay Worcester. The exhibition will run at the museum from April-October 2019.

Michael Patrick Lyons, teacher and administrator for the Worcester Public Schools is the recipient of the 2019 Volunteer Award. Whether volunteering for a cause or serving on a nonprofit board, Lyons has successfully brought diverse groups of people together to suppor the causes he believes in and raised millions of dollars in the process.

He has been recognized with the Thomas S. Green Public Service Award, Hometown Hero Award for the City of Worcester and many others. In addition to numerous boards and committees, Lyons also serves as a corporator for Open Sky Community Services.

Worcester native Rushelle Frazier is 2019’s Social Justice Advocacy and Action Award recipient. Rushelle was a field organizer with the “Yes on 3 Campaign” and in 2018 was the coGrand Marshall of the Worcester Pride Parade. Frazier is currently a New England field organizer for Amnesty International.

Safe Homes is an Open Sky Community Services program providing a drop-in center and peer-led services and supports for LGBTQ+ youth ages 1423. Safe Homes relies on donations and grants for all of the program’s funding.

Program on Indigenous Ceremonial Stone Structures Metacomet Land Trust will hold its Annual Meeting on Sunday, May 19th, with a business meeting and silent auction starting at 1:00 p.m. and a program starting at 2:00 p.m. The event will be held at Nipmuc Regional High School, 90 Pleasant Street in Upton at the school’s Professional Development Center on the 2nd Floor.

Let the Landscape Speak will delve into the characteristics and possible meanings behind the Indigenous Ceremonial Stone Landscape that surrounds us in New England. Often hidden in plain sight in our forests and fields, these enigmatic stone structures can be remnants of a network built by Indigenous Americans for ceremonial and other purposes. Doug Harris, Deputy Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Narragansett Indian Tribal Historic Preservation Office, has

been Tribally certified in the identification of ceremonial stone features for 16 years. Harris will present an illustrated talk showing the various types of Indigenous ceremonial stone features found in the region. Ample time will be allowed for questions.

Doug Harris is a veteran of more than 20 years of training and service to the cultural resource mission of the Narragansett Indian Tribal Historic Preservation Office (NITHPO). Under the leadership of current Medicine Man Tribal Historic Preservation Officer John Brown and the history, culture and policy training of Narragansett hereditary Elder Medicine Man Lloyd “Running Wolf” Wilcox and Elder Medicine Woman Dr. Ella Sekatau, Harris is adept as a protector of those cultural resources that are of significance to the Narragansett tradition.

Doug and his office work on the protection of Indigenous ceremonial stone landscape in the Northeast with three other federally recognized Tribes: the Wampanoag of Gayhead-Aquinnah; the Mohegan; and the Western Mashantucket Pequot. All these Tribes are part of a larger group called USET (United South and Eastern Tribes) that is comprised of 27 federally-recognized Tribes from Maine to Texas. Doug has been doing this work for over 20 years.

The event is free and open to the public. ValleyCAST has announces the winners of the 7th Annual Art Palette Contest. For the seventh year, artists of all ages transformed an ordinary wooden palette into unique works of art as part of the Art Palette Contest organized by ValleyCAST in collaboration with the Artist Palette Fine Art Studio.

This year, sixty-one local artists submitted palettes for consideration and visitors to the Spaulding R. Aldrich Heritage Gallery voted for their favorites. The finished palettes, includ-

ing the winners displaying their ribbons, were viewed until April 26th in the Gallery, located at the Whitin Mill, 50 Douglas Road, Whitinsville.

In the Youth category, Dafne Lotfy of Whitinsville, received first place, Ava Pelletier of Harrisville, RI, second place and Sofia Smith of Northbridge, third place. Teen category winners included Brook Vaillancourt of Millbury, first place, Emma Bullock of Holden, second place and Drew Mahoney of Franklin, third place. Amy

Kukta of Leominster took first place, Brandon Drake of Linwood, second place, and Bob Liberty of Uxbridge, third place in the Adult category.

Music at the Farm Concert Series An intimate concert series will take place, over this year, in a beautiful rustic homestead. Grace Note Farm, located at 969 Jackson Schoolhouse Road in Pascoag, RI, will be the host of the event.

Venture Community Services expands to Blackstone Valley Venture Community Services, a nonprofit human services organization based in Sturbridge, is expanding its reach into the Blackstone Valley. Along with the opening of the agency’s community day program for adults in early 2017, Venture’s services have grown to offer special events for kids with autism and other disabilities. The Community Events Program began with free adaptive yoga classes, which quickly grew in popularity. Recently, yoga has been become increasingly popular for its accessibility – with few modifications, the benefits of yoga are available to everyone, regardless of age or ability. Yoga has been shown to help students with autism spectrum disorders with concentration, impulse control, motor coordination, social skills and feelings of anxiety or stress.

Venture’s classes are taught by a licensed occupational therapist and certified yoga instructor who has also been trained in yoga for special populations.

Venture’s adaptive yoga program currently offers 14 classes per month at four different locations, providing completely cost-free yoga classes to nearly 140 children and adults. Currently, classes at the Uxbridge location are offered twice monthly for kids with special needs between the ages of 4 and 16. All are welcome and no experience is necessary. Upcoming classes are May 2nd, 16th, and 30th at 4:00 p.m.

The program also offers free family fun events that are sensory-friendly and geared toward kids with autism and their families. Interactive drum circles are offered on a monthly basis with a new theme each month. Upcoming classes are May 22nd and June 26th at 4:30 p.m. All events are held at 670 Douglas Street in Uxbridge. Uxbridge Senior Center Golf Outing has a new look and location The 14th Annual Uxbridge Senior Center Golf Outing has a new location and new format for the Uxbridge Elderly Connection and Uxbridge Auto, Inc. sponsored golf event. This year it is slated to be held at the Whitinsville Golf Club, Whitinsville, on Friday, June 28th, with a 1:00 p.m. staggered start. Teams of 2 or 4 may sign up to play for $100 per golfer for 9 holes of golf which includes cart and buffet supper.

Non-golfers may join in the fun for $30 for buffet only at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Local businesses and community members may support the event by making a donation or by donating a basket or gift item. Tee signs go for $100 apiece and are a mainstay of this important fundraiser which benefits the Uxbridge Senior Center in its efforts to provide numerous services, education, medical trans-

portation and socialization for Uxbridge seniors.

10th Annual One Act Play Festival on the Mumford Winners congratulated The winners of ValleyCAST’s 10th Annual One Act Play Festival on the Mumford were announced following the performances at the one-day theater event. Five one-act plays were presented representing both theater groups and individual entrants: Molehill Productions, Stepping Stone Community Theatre, We Three Productions, Milford Performing Arts Center and Kara Emily Krantz. The performances, all comedies this year, included both original works and published works. Prizes were awarded in three categories: Best Original Work, Best Ensemble, and Best of Show.

ValleyCAST, a subsidiary of Open Sky Community Services, is focused on fostering a creative community in the Blackstone Valley that is inclusive and supportive of people with and without disabilities.

Winning the award for Best Original Work was “Park & Play,” written and directed by Kara Emily Krantz.

Martel and Jeremy Woloski. Neal, a founding member of Braid Productions, has been a fixture in the local community theater scene for more than 30 years. In the past 10 years, Neal has been involved in over 50 shows with many local theater groups, participating in all aspects of theater production, including: lighting and sound design, stage managing, directing and acting.

Jeremy has been acting and directing in the local area for over 20 years with various groups, including Worcester Light Opera Company, where he serves on the board of directors, and Braid Productions, of which he is a founding member. Jeremy teaches theater arts at Burncoat Middle School in Worcester.

“This inclusive event brings together the magic of theater with the power of inclusion. MCC performs “Broadway Matinee” The Greater Milford Community Chorus will perform well-known Broadway show tunes at their upcoming concert, “Broadway Matinee,” scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Sunday, May 5th at Milford Town Hall’s Grand Ballroom. The show is open to the public and admission is $10 at the door.

youth Suicide Prevention Group offers study information There is a growing epidemic within the LGBT community, especially in the youth, and that epidemic is suicide.

LGBT students are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts than their heterosexual peers. The youth are particularly vulnerable to depression and suicidal ideation and awareness needs to be raised within the community.

The CDC’s, Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey (YRBS), covers a broad range of questions concerning behavioral actions and thoughts from our youth. In the latest release, for the first time in its history, the Survey asked about the student’s transgender identity. An astonishing 35% of those youth said that they had attempted suicide one or more times in the previous twelve months. That’s more than 4 times the national average of 7.4%. In Massachusetts, 5.4% of all high school students answered they have attempted suicide in the past 12 months.

The Jason Foundation offers a 1 hour training module titled, “Supporting LGBT Students in Schools: Suicide Prevention Among LGBT Youth.” The training module examines how suicide affects the LGBT community. The school environment can have an enormous impact on a young person’s life. It is vitally important to ensure that school make all students feel welcome

and safe. The training module and research is presented by noted experts in the suicide prevention field.

Rising Towards Unity in Grafton “Rising Towards Unity...when not all voices were equal” presents Women in the World of Frederick Douglass on Sunday, June 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the Grafton Community Barn in North Grafton.

Most people know about Frederick Douglass, the former slave, abolitionist, and freedom-fighter whose autobiography remains a monument in nineteenth-century American literature.

But, what about the women behind the man who made his life and legacy possible?

Leigh Fought, author of the awardwinning Women in the World of

Frederick Douglass and professor of history a Le Moyne College, will tell the story of the important women who created and supported Frederick Douglass, including his mother and grandmother, slave-mistresses, two wives, and the many activist women who kept the movement for human right alive.

This is part of a series of events that seeks to raise awareness of the influential role our history of slavery continues to play in the United States as we struggle to achieve a more equal, just, and peaceful society.

Rising Toward Unity will culminate on July 5th on the Grafton Common to

experience the moving words of Frederick Douglass’ famous speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” The reading will be followed by a discussion group(s) to explore the meaning and relevance of Douglass’ words to each of us today, particularly as they relate to race, gender and immigration.

School News Uxbridge high School earns Innovation Pathway Designations Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Tiano is proud to announce that Uxbridge High School has earned distinction for two additional Innovation Pathway programs. These are programs in Biomedical Science and Digital Media/Information Science being recognized by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Launched last year, Innovation Pathways are designed to create strong partnerships with employers in order to expose students to career options and help them develop knowledge and skills related to their chosen field of study before they graduate high school. For Uxbridge High School and its partners, these pathways will enable students to complete a course sequence in the content area and have access to college-level courses. While still in high school, with families and students alike supported by a comprehensive guidance model. The information science and biomedical pathways join the manufacturing engineering pathway as programs at UHS, which makes Uxbridge High School one of only two schools in the Commonwealth with multiple pathways approved in the same school.

“Innovation pathways are designed to provide students with opportunities and direction so they can pursue careers in high-demand industries in the Commonwealth,” Governor, Charlie Baker said. “We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure our students are ready to succeed in

the 21stCentury economy. These new career pathways are another way our administration is working to support students with a quality education that prepares them for success in high school and after graduation.”

Uxbridge High School currently offers two courses in biomedical science and at least six in the digital media/information science. Additionally, the school’s partnership with the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce, MassHire

Worcester, and Uxbridge Cable will enable students to take the academic skills learned in school and put them to immediate use; either through a Capstone/Senior project or Internship. Part of the high school’s program that continues to be considered particularly exceptional is its comprehensive guidance model, the implementation of which has been led by the guidance team of Christopher Barry, Amber Hampton, and Ashley Smith.

“Students involved in Innovation Pathways programs will study a carefully integrated series of courses and have work experiences relevant to their industry sector,” Lt. Governor Karyn Polito said. “These new pathways will expose more students to STEM-related fields and drive more young people to be interested in careers that are growing rapidly in Massachusetts.”

“Innovation pathways provides students in comprehensive high schools with career-oriented education that is too rarely available outside of vocational programs,” Education Secretary, James Peyser, said. “These new pathways don’t train students for specific occupations, but they prepare them for a variety of educational and career opportunities in a broad industry or sector.”

“Deepening the work that we are already doing to prepare students for success after high school is a key priority,” Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, Jeffrey C. Riley, said.

“Innovation Pathways connect what is happening

in the classroom with the real world, showing students firsthand what is possible for them after they leave our K-12 system. The individualized, supported planning for college and careers that are intrinsic to Innovation Pathways will put students in the driver’s seat and on the path to accessing the 21st century economy. Plus, our commitment to equity ensures that all students will be able to access these new opportunities.”

“The goal is keep our students competitive, to help our economic partners build and sustain a workforce, and to give parents some comfort that their students will have choices leaving high school, be it to be gainfully employed, further their education, or both,” Rubin said. “Our counselors work hard to have students understand quite a bit about who they are, so that course selection and post-high school planning happens strategically, deliberately, and purposefully and is ongoing, through each year a student is with us.”

These Pathways are a highlight of the BakerPolito Administration and its Workforce Skills cabinet, which partners the Secretaries of Education, Labor, and Housing/Economic Development. As legislators grapple with the next wave of education reform, additional partnerships with higher education institutions and maintaining connections with the needs of the workforces in the different regions of the state will be critical and strategic.

Business Review lovey’s Opens in Northbridge

By Abigail Epplett Gary Vecchione is known for his local enterprises, but this latest venture is particularly special to him. Named after his daughter, who he started calling “Lovey” when she was eight or nine years old, the Lovey’s Garden Marketplace is also inspired by the innocent, playful nature of the popular television show Gilligan’s Island.

“Growing up in the 60s, we didn’t have cell phones,” explained Vecchione. “We watched television endlessly when we weren’t playing outdoors.”

He wants to bring the same vibe to Lovey’s, creating a garden and farmers’ market along with providing parking and boat rentals for nearby Arcade Pond. “Lovey’s is going to be built around the niche of certified organic herbs… spice, fruit, and vegetable plants, all certified organic,” said Vecchione.

During the warmer months, he will sell plants from Gilbertie’s Herbs & Garden Center in Westport, Connecticut, whose owner, Sal Gilbertie, is a friend and adviser to Martha Stewart.

The plants are held to the highest standards of organic gardening and are grown without the use of pesticides.

Many are old-world or heirloom plants that cannot easily be found elsewhere.

Plant owners can sell their extra produce at his organic farmers’ market.

Inspired by long gone, Harding’s Boats & Bait, with its honor system boat rentals, Lovey’s will also provide boat rentals and bait sales for Arcade Pond. Of course, the modern version has many more safety features, as boaters must check in with Vecchione and wear life jackets while on the pond.

Boaters can stop at the aptly named Gilligan’s Island to have a picnic and swim.

When winter comes, there will still be plenty to do at Lovey’s, as Vecchione will be curating the ice on Arcade Pond.

After a purchase of a day-long pass for around $7, guests will have access to bathrooms, a warming hut, a food truck, and three skating rinks--one for hockey, one for free skating, and one for beginners. The beginner rink will be equipped with boxes for beginners, a technique he first employed during his twelve-year stint as owner of the Uxbridge Farm and Fair Grounds.

“We tie two milk crates together,” he explained. “[The beginners] push them around with the toe pick from their skate, and they’re skating without knowing it. We have a skate as low as 7J, which is a child’s size… about 6 inches long.”

He hopes his skate rentals will help parents save money, allowing them to return skates after use at Arcade Pond instead of buying a larger pair for their growing children each year. To further the convenience, Lovey’s will also sell food and beverages through a food

truck while still allowing picnickers to provide their own lunches.

Lovey’s will also be a cell-phone free zone, with no texting or phone calls are allowed on the ice. Offenders will have to sit in the penalty box, while repeat offenders will be asked to leave. It will also be a political-free zone, with conversations focused on plants or skating rather than personal worldviews.

“I do talk about God, because I’m a born-again Christian,” admitted Vecchione, so thoughtful conversations about faith will be allowed.

Most importantly, Lovey’s is a safety first enterprise. Along with a $2 million liability policy, there are fifteen different life-saving mechanisms in place to make sure all guests are safe, and Vecchione personally trains his life guarding staff.

Finally, he is grateful for all of those helping him, from setting up Lovey’s and filming the area to receiving permits for the various facets of the business.

“I’m thankful to the town for supporting us, for the permitting authorities,” said Vecchione. “I know I annoy people at times… but the people have been supportive of me, and everyone wants to see this come into town… I’m here because of good people that care about me, and because God is blessing me in a mighty way, more so than I’ve seen in thirty years.”

lulu’s Jewelry and Gifts: Fun, Funky & Unique As you stroll down Church Street in Whitinsville, you may notice a peculiar scene in the shop window of this local business: a mannequin with a horse head; wearing oven mitts. As confused walkers stop and gawk in the window, they then enter to go see what this is all about. Welcome to LuLu’s!

The store is brightly colored and there is upbeat music playing in the background. Fifties sci-fi posters are displayed behind the cash register (yes, there is a Godzilla one). A display of Kit-Cat clocks watch shoppers enter.

People entering the store tell Heather: you cant find a store like this anywhere around here! And that's exactly how Heather felt too…so she opened her own.

Shop owner Heather Glode of Sutton, had the vision of what this store would be for some time. “I wanted to combine my two favorite things - jewelry and fun, quirky gifts” says Heather, “I love shopping the small businesses in the Valley, but struggled to find things that really fit my personality. So when the time was right to open the store, I specifically chose items that I would either buy for myself or as a gift.”

Looking for some wild socks or kitchen towels? Sure. Maybe some snarky bath salts and scrubs? Yup. How about a skull shot glass? You bet. Bigfoot air freshener? Of course. And a wide range of cards, stationary, office supplies (not like the ones you’d find at the big chain

When asked how she would describe her store: “It’s everything you want and nothing you need!” she says with a big smile and a laugh. “The shopping experience should be fun, exciting, and lighthearted” says Heather. the moissanite, Heather also carries an assortment of earrings, necklaces, sterling silver rings, and bracelets. “What’s available in the display case is just a

sliver of what can be made. Everyone has their own taste and style, and I can accommodate just about anything you can think of creating! Just come in and chat, or message me online.” says Heather. “Though slowly becoming more mainstream, there is still some stigma over lab created diamonds, and it’s just not fair to these gorgeous stones. You shouldn't have to spend months of hard earned money to get something as beautiful and durable as diamond, when you can get a moissanite at a fraction of the cost.”

So where does the name LuLu’s come from anyway? “It was my childhood nickname” says Heather. “And it really captures the spirit and fun feel of the store. I want shoppers to come away with a chuckle of satisfaction after finding that perfect item.” And what about that mannequin in the window? “His name is Murray (horse)Head”, a reference to the 1980’s one hit wonder musician, “and its fun to watch the expression on people passing by the shop” says Heather. “He’s brought in quite a bit of business so far!”

Cancer Coalition hosts Against the Tide multi-sport events Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition (MBCC) will be holding its annual, statewide “Against the Tide” multisport events again in 2019. Set against the backdrop of two beautiful state parks, Against the Tide offers something for all outdoor enthusiasts.

Participants can enjoy pristine beaches and water locales for the half-mile paddleboard, competitive one-mile swim, one-mile and half-mile recreational swims, and two-mile kayak events.

The USATF certified 5K and 10K runs and 3-mile fitness walk route boast a paved tree-lined rolling course. All ages and abilities are welcome to choose from up to four of these exciting activities. The event also offers an Aquathon “Splash and Dash” component, where participants “splash” in the competitive one-mile swim and immediately “dash” in 5K or 10K run. New to the Hopkinton event this year is a beach kids fun run!

Participants may register as an individual or as part of a team. Registration is $40 per adult per event activity, $25 per student per event activity, and $10 for the kids fun run (Hopkinton only) for ages 10 and older. Children under

10 may participate in any event free of charge. Participants are encouraged to fundraise beyond these suggested minimums, as all proceeds support Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition’s unique goal towards breast cancer prevention. MBCC will be honoring firefighters at all of their 2019 athletic fundraisers.

St. Camillus Health Center in Whitinsville, has announced their seventh annual Golf Tournament to be held on May 21st, at the beautiful Blissful Meadows Country Club, in Uxbridge.

Breakfast and registration are at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.

The tournament will be a scramble format. Player spots are available now for $150 per player.

St. Camillus has launched a capital fundraising campaign to raise funds for a new 14-passanger wheel chair van for their residents and program participants. They are in need of this new van to get their Day Program participants to and from their center, as well as, taking nursing home residents out on trips.

Sponsors are needed to help defray the cost of this event. Please consider helping this local non-profit 501 (c) (3) nursing home continue on its quest to improve every resident's life.

For the past four years, people of all ages and abilities have gathered for a day of fishing for fun and prizes at River Bend Farm, 287 Oak Street in Uxbridge. This year’s Family Fun Fishing Day, scheduled for Saturday, May 4th from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (rain date May 5th) promises to be another popular event. Community Services in partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, Massachusetts Environmental Trust and the Blackstone River Coalition. Fishing rods and reels will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own equipment.

Food and beverages will be offered for sale by GottaQ Smokehouse BBQ. This catch-and-release event welcomes young and old, experienced anglers and first time fishers alike.

There will be a variety of educational activities to learn about unique streams called cold water fisheries, games, demonstrations on casting and tying techniques. Prizes will be awarded in all age categories. The day will be full of fun, learning and friendly competition.

Birding Ambassadors lead Spring Bird Walks Volunteers of Blackstone Heritage Corridor’s Birding Ambassadors program are leading a series of free, guided bird walks at some of their favorite birding spots this spring. The “Birding the Blackstone” spring series is being led by volunteer interpretive birders, Beth and Paul Milke, who have been leading walks for BHC for the past few years and have developed quite a fol-

lowing of avid birders.

The Saturday morning bird walks will each last about two hours, and in the event of inclement weather, the walks will take place the following day, Sunday, at the same start time. Pre-registration is required (BlackstoneBirds MA@gmail.com) and notice will be given as to any change in schedule.

“The Birding the Blackstone” series

will take flight for the season on Saturday, May 11th at River Bend Farm (Blackstone River & Canal Heritage State Park, 287 Oak Street, Uxbridge,) at 8:00 a.m. and is one of the Milke’s favorite birding spots. “After crossing the Blackstone Canal on the wooden bridge, we'll look for singing birds in the thickets and trees around the mowed field: bluebirds, swallows,

“There's a good chance we'll see Redbreasted Grosbeaks, an Indigo Bunting and possibly a secretive Black-billed Cuckoo.”

On Saturday, May 25th, the program flies south to Cumberland, RI, for an 8:00 a.m. walk at the Cumberland Monastery (1464 Diamond Hill Road; meet at the Cumberland Senior Center lot). “This is our first time birding here in spring,” Beth noted. “Who knows how many different species could be present along the edges of extensive marshland and fields!”

Celebrate National Trails Day on Saturday, June 1st exploring the trails at Chase Farm (667 Great Road) in Lincoln, RI, while looking for migrating birds. Beth and Paul will lead an 8:00 a.m. bird walk exploring this beautiful, historic property located next to the Hearthside House Museum, a blacksmith shop and a one-room schoolhouse. “The air over the fields will be full of Tree and Barn Swallows,” Beth predicted. “We should see a good number of blackbirds, including Baltimore Orioles, and a variety of warblers and sparrows. A Green Heron might be fishing at the pond.”

On Saturday, June 8th, a participant of the Birding Ambassadors program is opening up her farm along Cold Spring Brook, in Uxbridge, MA. According to Beth, the habitat includes a marsh, several fields, and a section of woods.

“Bluebirds, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, Wrens, and Wood Ducks often nest on the property,” she noted. The walk

begins at 8:00 a.m. and like the other walks, pre-registration is required (BlackstoneBirdsMA@gmail.com) and directions will be sent to those who register.

The spring birding series will conclude on Saturday, June 15th at the new Blackstone Gateway Park in Worcester, MA. Which is located adjacent to the Blackstone Heritage Corridor Visitor Center (3 Paul Clancy Way). Participants will meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Visitor Center and walk over to the park. “We’ll be among the first to list what bird species are making their home here along the Middle River, at the northern edge of the Blackstone River Heritage Corridor,” Beth explained. “The River Walk includes observation platforms projecting over the water that give a bird's-eye view of their habit.”

Scouts hold Blue & Gold Ceremony The Cub Scouts from St. Denis Pack 316 recently held their annual Blue and Gold ceremony at the Douglas High School. The Blue and Gold is a celebration of the Anniversary of Scouting. It brings families together for an evening of fun and recognition. The theme for this year’s Blue & Gold was Stars & Stripes. Highlights of the evening included skits from each den and awarding the centerpiece contest winner. In addition, all the scouts in the Pack were recognized for their accomplishments and progress toward ranks.

During the event, the Pack was recognized for achieving the Gold Level in the Boys Scouts of America’s Journey to Excellence Program. The Journey to Excellence Program is a performance recognition program designed to encourage and reward success and measure the performance of its units. It is also meant to encourage excellence in providing a quality program.

Arrow of Light Ceremony. Pack 316 had three Arrow of Light recipients this year, they are: Zachary Chiasson, Ryan Morrissette, and Jackson Valanzola. Receiving the Arrow of Light is the culmination of a Cub Scout’s career. It is the highest award that a Cub Scout can earn and is the only Cub Scout emblem that can be worn on a Boy Scout uniform. During the ceremony, the scouts received their emblems. They also presented a special Arrow of Light pin to a parent as a way of thanking them for the support they received throughout their Cub Scouting years. Before crossing the bridge to Boy Scouts, the Arrow of Light recipients were honored with a special slide show highlighting their Cub Scout journey.

Representative, Joseph McKenna, addressed the families and scouts further recognizing the Pack’s Arrow of Light recipients for their accomplishments with congratulatory letters from the House.

Slow down to get faster

By Jean Gillis, USAT Coach, ChiRunning Instructor Most beginning runners, and even some experienced ones, believe that if you want to get faster, you should always train fast. The truth is, if you always train fast, you’re actually going to reach a point of diminishing returns, where instead of improving, you’re likely to start getting sick, injured, or just feel tired and unmotivated. I attended a workshop with Mark Allen, sixtime Ironman Triathlon World Champion, and he discussed how following a training routine that includes mostly low intensity and small amount of high intensity workouts helped him to achieve peak performance. American exercise physiologist, Stephen Seiler analyzed the training methods of elite endurance athletes and “found that world class cyclists, runners, triathletes, and others do approximately 80 percent of their training at low intensity and the remaining 20 percent at moderate and high intensities.”

What are the benefits of following this type of training? 1) You’ll feel better. At a lower level of effort, in your aerobic training zone, your body releases DHEA, which helps improve bone density while promoting heart health, controls cholesterol levels, fights fatigue and improves production of important sex hormones like testosterone and estrogen. 2) In this training zone, you’ll secrete less stress hormones, like cortisol, and break down less muscle tissue, so you’ll need less recovery time from your workout. This can help you to keep to a more regular and consistent routine without getting burnt out. 3) Training in your aerobic zone trains your body to burn more fat, rather than carbohydrates; and you’ll continue to burn post workout. This makes you more efficient and is beneficial if you want to lose fat. 4) This intensity zone aids in increasing the number and size of blood vessels in your muscles and improving your lung ventilation. As a result, your body is able to carry more oxygen to your muscles and take away waste products. 5) Over the long run, as your body adapts, you’ll be able to go faster but still stay within your aerobic training zone. 6) You can focus on improving technique, which can sometimes deteriorate with higher intensity efforts.

Low intensity means an effort level where you can easily hold a conversation. Your body is using its aerobic metabolic system to produce energy mostly from burning fat and it’s in the range of 60 - 78 percent of your max heart rate (MHR). There are more technical ways to determine your training zones, but for simplicity, we’ll use the 220 method. Subtract your age from 220, you’ll get your MHR, then multiply that number by 60 and 78 percent to find your aerobic zone.
