Grand Marshals enjoy Uxbridge First Night Dear Editor,

It was a great surprise for my Dad, Chuck Lynch, and I to have been asked to be co-marshals for the 20th Uxbridge First Night Santa Parade. My grand father, Charles Lynch started the Lynch family business almost 90 years ago, so both my Dad and I were born into the Uxbridge business community and spent our lives working with and for the residents of Uxbridge.

The parade was fantastic! What wonderful holiday cheer and so many awed expressions on the faces of hundreds and hundreds of children. We were both honored to have been part of such a terrific event. I was able to witness the Grinch

and excitement. o ne little girl, dressed beautifully in a blue and white princess outfit, was pointed at by the Grinch and with her Mom's o.k., she rushed to the Grinch and gave him the biggest Christmas hug she could muster. Everyone did a great job, especially Santa and Mrs Claus and the whole Uxbridge First Night Committee whom work so hard all year to continue this event!

Thank You Uxbridge for all the years.

Thank You from UHS Toys for Tots Party Dear Editor,

As a resident of Uxbridge my entire life and a teacher at Uxbridge High School for 26 years, I have witnessed many ups and downs in town over the years. Through it all, it has been my observation that we are unique for many reasons, but one thing that seems to stand out is the support we give to each other when times are tough.

Twenty years ago, Uxbridge High School made a push to incorporate more community service into its requirements.

This prompted one small social studies class to initiate a holiday party for the children in town. The idea is that the students would find sponsors to provide the money and supplies, the students would provide the work, and the children in our community would be able to experience a free party that included games, prizes, crafts, food, music, and a visit with Santa in a well decorated environment. Many who have attended have donated a new toy to Adopt-an-Angel in town.

The result has been an event that has surpassed any expectations we could have had in 1997. The interaction between our students, the children, the parents, former students, and faculty has been priceless, and in a time of such divisive politics and negative news, could not come at a better time.

I can’t say “thank you” enough to all of you who supported this event over the last twenty years. You have given our students a purpose (a challenge they have risen to spectacularly each year), the children of our community some holiday joy, and Adopt-an-Angel the resources needed to help achieve their goals. I’ve been fortunate enough to be in a position to see everything come together in a magical way each year, and I can’t overstate the effect it has had on all of us.

Thanks again, and have a great holiday season.

Douglas Community Electricity Aggregation Program Update

The original 2-year supply contact has been renewed for a 3-year term with Public Power. The new electric rate is fixed at $0.10122 per kilowatt hour (kWh) from January 2018 to January 2021. This compares favorably with the Basic Service rate for National Grid from November 1st, 2017 to April 30th, 2018 which will be $0.12673 per kWh. Uxbridge Safe Grad Trivia Night What can be more fun than a little friendly competition among friends to earn bragging rights as the smartest people while raising money for graduating seniors to have a fun, safe environment after graduation? Uxbridge Parents for Safe Graduation is holding its annual trivia night fundraiser on Friday January 26th, at the Progressive Club in Uxbridge, from 7:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. The first hour is social hour with two hours of trivia. Winter Hiking Series at River Bend

Uxbridge Community Gardens Welcomes New Gardeners

In welcoming in the new year 2018, Uxbridge Community Gardens (UCG) is thinking about spring. “It was admittedly a challenging season last year. So much rain early on created less than optimal growing conditions,” said Barbara Hall, UCG Chair. “We were all in it together,” said UCG Vice Chair Kim Demers who also manages the People First Food Pantry plot with UCG Secretary Kristin Holt. “o ne of the reasons we do this is to cultivate a sense of community.”

UCG is located at the top of the hill on Sutton Street adjacent to the town soccer fields. o ne hundred 20’ X 20’ garden plots are occupied by Uxbridge residents who plant, tend, and harvest throughout the season with the bonus of cultivating friendships with like-minded residents.

The deadline for submitting an application for a 2018 UCG plot is Monday, March 5th. The date for returning gardeners to secure their gardens for another year by submitting payment is the same. “We look forward to welcoming new gardeners to UCG this year,” said Barbara Hall. “We have a number of desirable plots available, so anyone who is thinking about a garden this year should take this opportunity to join now!”

Uxbridge residents who are interested in a plot can download an application and release form from the UCG page on the town website. FAQs and a copy of the ground rules are accessible on the site. Applications can also be picked up at Uxbridge Town Hall and Uxbridge Public Library. Completed applications, release forms, and payment can be mailed to UCG, Uxbridge Town Hall, 21 South Main Street, Uxbridge, 01569. The fee for of a 20’ x 20’ plot is $20. Upcoming Events at St. Peter's Parish

St. Peter’s Parish in Northbridge will be hosting two dinners that will help fund the Mission Trips for their high school and middle school kids in July 2018. The first is a pork roast dinner on Saturday, January 20th and the second dinner will be chicken parmesan on Saturday, February 10th. Tickets are $10 adults/$8.50 seniors and kids ages 4-12/ $35 per family.

This series of three winter hikes, at River Bend Farm, is an introduction to get hikers comfortable enjoying the trails year-round. Winter hiking offers a unique chance to take in some interesting views that are hidden by foliage during other seasons and is a great way to beat the winter blues! Each guided hike will begin with a short safety message. Be prepared for cold weather, dress in layers and avoid cotton clothing. Appropriate footwear is required, consider bringing hiking poles and ice cleats. If conditions permit, bring snowshoes and hiking poles. Carry drinking water and snack. All ages able to complete the 3 or 7 mile hike during colder weather welcome.

Clothing Swap in Whitinsville

The Blackstone Valley United Methodist Church in Whitinsville will host a clothing swap on Saturday, January 13th, from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. They accept donations of gently used (no rips or stains please) men's, women's and kid's clothing, shoes and accessories. Donations can be dropped off on Friday, January 12th between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. or the morning of the swap. Use the driveway between Domino's Pizza and the law office and come in the church's back door. Every-

thing is free and the swap is open to the public. You don't have to donate to take something home and you don't have to take something in order to donate.

Meet at River Bend Farm Visitor Center 287 o ak St., in Uxbridge, for this 3 mile round trip hike that loops up Goat Hill and back. This forest trail ranges from easy/ difficult in some areas and has a variety of interesting views. The upper side of the loop is hilly and steep and may be more strenuous if icy or snow covered.

Meet At 366 East Hartford Ave, in Uxbridge, at the Rice City Pond Parking Lot. This 3 mile round trip moderate hike along King Philips Trail will break at a scenic lookout to view

the sunset before returning along the trail through dusk to dark by the time you reach the parking area. Be prepared for night hiking, flashlights or headlamps are suggested. Portions of the trail are hilly and steep and may be more strenuous if icy or snow covered.

This forest trail has roots and rocks along the path.

7 MILE HERITAGE TRAIL HIKE Saturday, March 17th, 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

Meet at River Bend Farm Visitor Center 287 o ak St., in Uxbridge, for this last hike in the winter series. This longer 7 mile round trip hike will range from easy/ difficult along a wide range of terrain from gravel path, field, and hilly forest trails. Due to the hike length and possible wintry conditions, the hike is strenuous, please be prepared for 4 hours of winter hiking. o n return to Visitor Center, they will wrap up the season’s hikes with hot chocolate and conversation!

Merolli running for Massachusetts State Senate

Tom Merolli of Mendon, is running for State Senator of the Worcester/ Norfolk District. He is challenging Republican incumbent Ryan Fattman.

The campaign had its first kickoff meeting last month with more than 25 people in attendance ready to get to work building a People First coalition that will take on the key issues facing the district.

Tom believes strongly in reforming the education funding laws that have left schools dry and grasping for money. He wants to see effective treatment for opioid addiction and end the constant refrain that “there aren’t enough beds.” And he will fight to make sure that the environment is being protected and that the district’s representation on Beacon Hill won’t sit idly by as water sources are poisoned.

With team leaders in every town, Tom has already begun meeting with locals to learn more about each town’s unique concerns and needs that he can help to solve when he is sitting in the State

House. After listening with each town, Tom will take the issues closest to his constituents’ hearts to build a platform that will fight to restore prosperity and justice to the district.

Tom’s first public statement on why he is running is as follows: “There’s an awful lot of talk about division lately. o ur cable news networks and Facebook feeds constantly tell us that we have never been further separated from our neighbors than we are today. Magazine covers “welcome” us to the “Divided States of America.” Why should we accept such a ridiculous idea?

We see our neighbors every day, whether it’s across the lawn, in the store, or at the bar. And when we do, I think it’s perfectly clear that there is far more that unites us as a community than divides us. Everyone wants to know the water they are getting from their faucet is safe to drink. Everyone wants their local school system to be well funded and able to provide a path to success for their children. Everyone

wants to be able to visit their doctor without worrying if it’s going to break the bank. These rights are what Franklin Delano Roosevelt meant when he said our country must have “Freedom from fear.”

These aren’t Republican concerns.

These aren’t Democratic concerns.

These are human concerns. That many of our neighbors in the Worcester and Norfolk district cannot guarantee these basic necessities of life reveals a serious problem within our governance. It shows that our district is not properly represented in our State Legislature. I would like to change that. These are the ideals my campaign stands for. These human problems unite us in strife, and united we will solve them.

I am currently the town of Mendon’s Assistant Treasurer, Economic Development Chair, and am a lifelong resident of the district. Trust me when I say

I feel the pain of the issues befalling our community as deeply as anyone. Which is why I won’t sit by as nothing is done.

Perfect Voting Records for State Reps.

House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading) congratulated State Representatives David K. Muradian Jr. (R-Grafton), Kevin J. Kuros (R- Uxbridge) and Joseph D. McKenna (R-Webster) for maintaining perfect voting records for the first half of the 2017-2018 legislative session.

The three legislators participated in all 305 roll call votes cast in the House of Representatives between January and November of 2017, compiling 100% voting records.

Representatives Muradian, Kuros and McKenna cast votes this session on several key bills that were signed into law, including the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which requires employers to provide reasonable workplace accommodations for expectant and nursing mothers, as well as a proposal to double the one-time survivor benefits paid to the families of police, firefighters and other public safety officials killed in the line of duty, which was increased from $150,000 to $300,000.

The three legislators also backed efforts to reimburse cities and towns for the costs associated with implementing the state’s early voting law during the November 2016 election cycle.

The Division of Local Mandates in the State Auditor’s o ffice is currently in the process of collecting and certifying these costs.

“It has truly been an honor serving the residents of Grafton, Northbridge and Upton during this Legislative Session,” said Representative Muradian. “I hope this voting record can act as a positive influence on our community, and demonstrate the strong dedication and commitment I have to my constituents. o ur district deserves full time representation, and it is truly an honor to be your State Representative.”

"I'm proud that for the third year in a row I have maintained a perfect voting record,” said Representative McKenna. “The constituents of the 18th Worcester District elected me to represent them on Beacon Hill, and I've been tremendously proud to follow through on the promise to do just that."

News from Senator Fattman’s Office CITIz ENS' LEGISLATIVE SEMINAR State Senator Ryan Fattman (R-Sutton) is seeking nominees to participate in the 80th Citizens' Legislative Seminar (CLS) to be held March 27th and March 28th at the State House in Boston. CLS is a semi-annual educational seminar geared towards adults of all ages interested in learning more about state government and the legislative process.

“Understanding of state politics is a valuable quality that is essential to the democratic process of the state of Massachusetts. I am excited to be able to extend this opportunity to residents of Southern Worcester County,” said Fattman.

Established in 1976 through a collaborative effort of the Massachusetts Senate and the University of Massachusetts, Boston, the two-day seminar features engaging presentations by Senators and staff on aspects of the day-to-day experience of legislators in the Commonwealth. Topics will include the history and process of the Legislature, the state budget, the parliamentary role of the Clerk of the Senate and the future of the Legislature. The Seminar will walk participants through the legislative process including how bills are introduced, debated, and passed.

The CLS culminates with a simulated legislative hearing and Senate session where participants are invited to use what they have learned and participate as “Senators” in the Senate Chamber in order to have a first-hand experience of the legislative process.

Co NSECUTIVE Vo TING STREAK After completing his third year representing the Worcester Norfolk district, State Senator Ryan C. Fattman (RWebster) continued his streak of maintaining a perfect voting record in the state’s upper chamber.

His perfect voting streak in the state legislature collectively includes two terms in the House of Representatives and now his second term in the State Senate.

o bituaries_________ Francis (Frank) E. Kaczynski

Frank Kaczynski, 80, of Uxbridge passed away Monday, December 4th, at home with family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Marian (Sellig) Kaczynski, his son Robert A. Kaczynski and daughter-inlaw Marie Kaczynski of Raleigh, NC, daughter Jill (Kaczynski) Elliott and son-in-law Alastair Elliott of Duxbury and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Francis Kaczynski and his brother Robert L. Kaczynski.

He was born September 22, 1937 in Webster, the son of the late Frank Kaczynski and Helen (Pinski) Gabor.

He was a graduate of Bartlett High School and Peterson’s School of Steam Engineering. Frank served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Henley.

Frank was employed as a fireman and boiler tender at the former Draper Corporation for over 15 years. He then

worked as a stationary engineer in the power plant of Cranston Print Works until his retirement in 1998.

A lover of adventure and the great outdoors, Frank hiked the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain, GA to Mt Katahdin, ME at age 65, completing the solo journey in 6 months. In retirement, he and his beloved wife Marian took several trips to the US National Parks and destina-

tions around the world to learn more about the environment, animals and native people. In his later years, the only medicine Frank needed was biking the backroads of Maine, hiking the hills of Camden, and walking the beaches of o gunquit and Drake’s Island.

He was a steadfast conservationist who was composting, recycling and growing his own organic vegetables for over 50 years. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and archery throughout his life. Frank was a life member of the Uxbridge Rod & Gun Club, the NRA and a member of the New England Wood Carvers. He enjoyed life’s simple pleasures of a cold beer and peanuts after a hot summer day tending his vegetable garden, and long walks in the woods. His family treasures the values that Frank lived by and the memories he left behind.

The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care provided by nurses Erin and Katrina of the Salmon VNA and Hospice during the last week of Frank’s life.

Nikki L. Eldredge Nikki L. Eldredge, 25, of Whitinsville formerly of Uxbridge passed away November 20, 2017 at home.

Nikki was born March 13, 1992 in Milford the daughter of Paul D. Eldredge and Raeleen L. (Coolbeth) Little and was a graduate of Uxbridge H.S. She was currently studying at Southern New Hampshire University pursuing a degree in criminal justice.

Nikki was a compassionate and sensitive young woman whose nature was to care for those around her. She loved children and prided herself on forming strong, cohesive bonds with the children she babysat over the years, treating them more like part of her own family than part of her job.

Nikki enjoyed reading and discussing novels with themes that challenged and opened her world view. This is evidenced by her pursuit of a degree in criminal justice, which she wanted to use to advocate for those who felt powerless. Though she left us far too soon,

Nikki’s gentle strength leaves a legacy that will not soon be forgotten.

In addition to her father Paul of Whitinsville and mother Raeleen, she is survived by her paternal grandmother, Phyllis Eldredge of Methuen; maternal grandmother, Kendalyn Stone of Sugar Hill, NH; a brother Paul D. Eldredge II of Whitinsville; sisters, Kendalyn J. and her husband Adam Banks of Exeter, RI & Diana R. Eldredge of Milford; two nieces, one nephew and aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A celebration of Nikki’s life will be held in the spring of 2018 for friends and family, and information will be distributed at a later date.

“Wonder” brings kindness front and center

Local tweens/teens at the Whitinsville Social Library, discussed how they could each be a little more kind and a bit more caring towards others after reading R.J. Palacio’s bestselling young adult novel entitled “Wonder”.

Local tweens/teens convened at the Whitinsville Social Library and discussed how they could each be a little more kind and a bit more caring towards others as they talked about R.J. Palacio’s bestselling young adult novel entitled “Wonder”. “Wonder” is about a 10-year-old boy named Auggie Pullman who has an amazing inner strength and beauty and a craniofacial deformity. Like many young adults today, Auggie faces numerous challenges such as starting middle school and dealing with changing friendships. Following the book discussion the group participated in an activity where they wrote positive words and messages derived from the book on miniature chalkboards. Participants were able to keep the chalkboards as a reminder that while we all have obstacles to overcome in our lives, we need to be more kind, caring, and accepting of ourselves and others. The book club was cofacilitated by Marcia Nichols, Children’s Librarian, and Amy Cowen, parent volunteer.

Award-winning lecture series in Whitinsville

The award-winning January Series of Calvin College is coming to Whitinsville. From Jan. 3 through Jan. 23, 2018, Fairlawn Christian Reformed Church will be one of more than 50 remote webcast locations worldwide to broadcast one of the nation’s leading lecture and cultural arts series.

The January Series features one of the most influential scientific minds, a New York Times best-selling author and a former technology adviser to the White House. A few of the notable presenters in the 2018 lineup include Katherine Boo, a staff writer for The New Yorker whose work has been honored by a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant and Pulitzer Prize; Jeremy McCarter, co-author of Hamilton: The Revolution who witnessed the Broadway show’s journey from concept to cultural phenomenon; and Kevin o lusola, who is best known as the beatboxing member of the Grammy-winning vocal quintet Pentatonix.

“Each year I purposely pull together a lineup that is eclectic so that there is a wide variety of timely topics on the series,” said Kristi Potter, director of the January Series. “But this year as I reflected on what was happening in the news and what conversations would be good to have on the series in 2018, I felt a strong need to bring positive and encouraging stories. So as always, we will hear from speakers on a number of difficult topics like poverty, racism, pollution, restorative justice and dementia, but we will also hear stories of how we can make a difference in the world with our influence, our power, our money or even our mindset.”

Oral History Interview Training Workshop

Blackstone Heritage Corridor, Inc. (BHC), in partnership with the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park, is presenting a training on conducting an oral history interview. The free workshop will be held at Little Red Shop Museum, 12 Hopedale Street in Hopedale on Wednesday, January 10th, at 6:30 p.m.

Have you ever heard people say "I should have asked mom about..." or "I wish dad had told me..."? Don't let this happen to you! Joshua Bell is a Park Ranger for Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park and has conducted dozens of oral history interviews. Exactly what is an “oral history” interview? Is it easy to do? What equipment is needed? o nce it’s done, what happens next?

Relying on interaction from those participating in the workshop, Ranger Bell will demonstrate some of the key things

to consider when forming questions, conducting interviews, and keeping the stories that matter to you and your organizations alive to be appreciated by generations to come.

The series is presented as part of BHC’s Skills Workshop Series for the Volunteers-in-Parks Program it manages in partnership with the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park and this workshop is open to the public.

The Massachusetts House of Representatives has approved a sweeping criminal justice bill that provides for bail and minimum mandatory sentencing reforms, the reclassification of fentanyl as a Class A substance, and the establishment of a special commission to study the operations of the state crime lab.

State Representative David K. Muradian, Jr. (R-Grafton), supported the omnibus bill, which was approved on a vote of 144-9 last November following two days of debate in the House.

Under the House bill, fentanyl: which is now present in 81 percent of all opioid-related deaths in Massachusetts, would be added to the list of Class A substances, along with acetyl fentanyl and carfentanil. The House bill also creates a fentanyl trafficking penalty for 10 grams of fentanyl or any of its derivatives, punishable by a 3 ½ year mandatory minimum sentence with a maximum of 20 years.

a special commission to study the operation and management of the Massachusetts State police crime laboratory.

In addition to establishing professional qualifications for the head of the crime laboratory, the commission will also consider transferring oversight of the lab to another executive agency or to an independent executive director.

Several Republican-sponsored amendments were adopted as part of the final House bill, including language offered by Representative Paul Frost (R-Auburn) mandating a minimum prison sentence of one year and as many as 10 years for committing assault and battery on a police officer. o ffenders would also face a potential fine of between $500 and $10,000.

The bill also directs the Executive o ffice of Public Safety and Security (Eo PSS) to establish a statewide sexual assault evidence kit tracking system, which will allow victims of sexual assault to anonymously track their kits.

The amendment, sponsored by House Minority Leader Bradley H. Jones, Jr. (R-North Reading), also requires that evidence kits be retained for 50 years and mandates that Eo PSS conduct an audit of all existing untested kits associated with a reported crime to determine the existing backlog. o ther Republican initiatives contained in the bill include: Language sponsored by Representative Joseph McKenna (R-Webster) adding “a finding of guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity” to the definition of what is required to be disclosed on a Criminal o ffender Record Information (Co RI) report.

USDA announces funding Agricultural Land Easement Application Deadline to Help Protect Wetlands The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has announced the availability of funding to help landowners protect and restore wetlands in Massachusetts. The funding is provided through the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP), created by the 2014 Farm Bill to protect critical water resources and wildlife habitat, and encourage private owners to maintain land for farming and ranching.

Through the voluntary sale of an easement, landowners limit future development to protect these key resources.

“The benefits of restoring, enhancing and protecting critical wetlands cannot be overstated,” said Christine Clarke, Massachusetts State Conservationist for NRCS. “Wetlands provide critical habitat for a wide array of wildlife species. They also store floodwaters, clean and recharge groundwater, sequester carbon, trap sediment, and filter pollutants for clean water. USDA is committed to restoring and protecting vital sensitive wetlands that provide important wildlife habitat and improve water quality.”

ACEP's Wetland Reserve Easements allow landowners to successfully restore, enhance and protect habitat for wildlife on their lands, reduce damage from flooding, recharge groundwater and provide outdoor recreational and educational opportunities. Eligible landowners can choose to enroll in a permanent or 30-year easement. Tribal landowners also have the option of enrolling in 30-year contracts.

In federal fiscal years 2014-2017, 527 acres of wetlands were protected in

Massachusetts under ACEP Wetland Reserve Easements.

“Protecting working agricultural lands preserves Massachusetts’ heritage, natural resources and open space,” said Christine Clarke, Massachusetts State Conservationist for NRCS. “ACEP's agricultural land easements are important tools for people trying to improve the management of their land. These easements also protect the long-term viability of the nation's food supply by preventing conversion of productive working lands to non-agricultural uses.”

NRCS may contribute up to 50 percent of the fair market value of the agricultural land easement. Where NRCS determines that grasslands of special environmental significance will be protected, NRCS may contribute up to 75

percent of the fair market value of the agricultural land easement. Since enactment of the 2014 Farm Bill, over 2,000 acres of Massachusetts farmland have been protected under ACEP Agricultural Land Easements.

The New England Aquarium brought several of their Traveling Education Programs to o LV and spent 3 days with the students! Sponsored by the o LV Parents' Guild, the Aquarium was able to host sessions giving all students a handson experience with tide-pools and habitats native to New England waters. For the younger grades, students were able to explore and interact with live tide-pool animals: such as hermit crabs, clams, mussels and sea stars. Grades 2nd through 4th learned about the differences and similarities between sandy and rocky beaches and salt marshes, and the various adaptations of the animals. The 6th through 8th graders experienced engineering and erosion (both human and natural), and were challenged to solve problems of erosion today.

Amanda Gallerani, Program Educator at the Aquarium, and Uxbridge resident, lead the program at o LV with a few members of the Aquarium team. The Aquarium offers several traveling education programs throughout the state, and loves when children engage with the animals and learn the importance of taking care of our planet. For Amanda, giving back to her community and answering the questions of students brings her joy. “You don’t have to be an adult to make a difference,” she says. “It just takes one person to start a wave.”

Uxbridge Free Public Library will hold their Book Club Meeting here with Zach Parrish. They will be discussing “The Secret Diary of Hendrik Groen”.

A new book will also be chosen for the book club to read next and they are available in regular, large print or audio for your convenience. You are welcome to have lunch with them on this day and they will provide transportation home after if you ride in on the van. Please call to sign up. Page Turners with Chris Powloka will return on Tuesday, February 13th at the senior center.

TAI CHI Thursdays, January 11th – February 15th. 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Ron Allen from Lark Studio will hold a 3rd session of Tai Chi classes at the senior center. Sessions are free, but a suggested donation of $2.00 per class is welcome.

These classes will help you with balance and meditation and will be a fun way to keep you active during the winter months. If there is a storm and school is cancelled, there will not be a session. You are more than welcome to call if you have any questions.

Cancelled classes will be made up.

Living in the Light of What We Value

By Gail Van k leeck I first met my life partner Parker twenty four years ago, after a troubled romance that left me doubting my ability to make good relationship choices.

He was sitting in front of me at a business meeting. Lean and tan with hair almost long enough to wear in a ponytail, he had an easy, contagious laugh and an approachable kind of self-confidence.

On the surface we didn’t have much in common. He’d made his living as a jazz drummer, then built a sailboat which he sailed from California to Florida… And I was a somewhat sheltered girl from Michigan, who didn’t understand jazz and had never been out of sight of land.

After we’d been seeing one another for a while, he asked if he could keep a few of his clothes in my closet. I remember nodding and silently reassuring myself that he could clear out his belongings in less than an hour if I needed to ask him to leave. Time passed and as we happily began spending more time together the closet grew fuller and fuller. Then one evening we had a serious argument. It wasn’t as though we had never argued before, but this time was different and I angrily asked him to leave. After a moment of silence he quietly told me that in past relationships he had always created a back door to escape through in his mind. He said when we met he had nailed that door shut and that he would do everything in his power to make our relationship work. Like every couple we still have our challenges, but one of the things that keeps us so lovingly committed to one another is that both of us deeply values our relationship.

In these polarizing political times, remembering our values and becoming more deeply committed to them has become increasingly important. Focusing on what we value can empower us to take a stand and to put passion, energy, thought and heart into living our lives in a way that reflects what is most important to us.

Today the majority of Americans hold values that fall somewhere in the middle of our tragic political divide. Most of us hate the politics, the meaningless bickering and the inability of our elected leaders to come together and work toward equitable and just solutions that reflect the basic values the majority of us share.

Although the people on the two political extremes may have access to more

money, or louder and better organized voices, we can no longer rely on them to speak or act for us in terms of what we value for ourselves and our country.

Now, more than ever, that job belongs to each of us!

Please take a moment as you read this to remember the terrible tragedy of 9/11. Remember the horror, sadness and compassion you felt. Remember how the simple acts of kindness and courage you witnessed on TV touched your heart, made you weep and deepened your understanding of what it really means to be “our brother’s keeper”. Remembering what you valued at that time can inspire you to renew your commitment to the values you had then and empower you to live in the light of them now.

Living in the light of what we value isn’t easy and it doesn’t mean we will always get everything we want… but it can give us courage and clarity and restore our sense of hope. It can help us to become more actively compassionate in our community and perhaps to use that as a stepping stone toward our world a better place for EVERYONE. The clearer we are about what we value, the easier it becomes to make the kinds of choices that help us live a fuller and happier life.

Grief Recovery Support Group to begin Jan. 9th

A new grief recovery support group starts up on Tuesday, January 9th, at the Pleasant Street Church. GriefShare is a program designed to help people in bereavement find encouragement and support during the grieving process.

GriefShare meetings are for anyone who is grieving the loss of someone.

Each GriefShare session includes a

video seminar and group discussion, providing an opportunity to interact with others who have experienced a recent loss. Weekly topics include “Living with Grief,” The Effects of Grief,” “Your Family and Grief,” “Why,” and “Stuck in Grief.”

The program continues for 13 weeks, and attendees are welcome to join the

group at any point. GriefShare is free, non-denominational, and open to all.

~Society ~ Annual Anything Goes Photo Show

The 6th Annual Anything Goes Photo Show is sure to be a success. Each year, submissions always surprise everyone and it is their most popular show of the year. Opening night reception will be January 19th from 4:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m., at the Alternatives Community Gallery5 S. Main St. in Uxbridge. Come meet and see the work of the talented photographers of the Valley area. There will be light refreshments and lots of community spirit to be had. The Gallery will be open Saturday mornings from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. during the length of the show. Check their web page to see what mini workshop is being held on the days you would be interested in.

The Gallery is generally open from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, the public is encouraged to come in and view the art. There is ample free parking.

Their key note speakers for their January Photo Month will be renowned Worcester photographers, Scott Erb and Donna Dufault. Their presentation will be held January 21st from 1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. at the Alternatives Community Gallery. They will speak about project management, from concept idea to production, and mounting and marketing a show. This topic is appropriate for all visual artists. Submission to the show is open to the public, deadline is January 13th.

With current technologies, photography is an art form accessible to all ages and skill levels. They are always amazed at the variety of styles and sub-

ject matter from portraits to nature to the abstract form.

Following this show they will hold a “Selfi” show open to all area high school juniors and seniors. Look for details and please encourage your teens to participate in this great self expression project.

They have had great success with their POP-UP Gallery at 1 Grafton Common. They would like to thank the owners and staff of all the Grafton Common shops for their support.

There is a beautiful performance hall tucked away in the building as well, operated by Apple Tree Arts. Check out their schedule of events including performances by friends from the Claflin Symphony. The BVAA encourages area residents to stop by the picturesque area too, while away an afternoon this winter and enjoy lunch at the Hunter’s Tavern.

Community Chorus is calling all singers!

Do you love to sing? Do you sing along with every song that you hear on the radio? Or, were you in the high school chorus or church choir and have thought of singing in a chorus again?

Then come join them and share your love of singing!

Rehearsals will be held every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. at the Memorial Hall Cultural Center, 30 School Street, in Milford. They will be accepting new members January 3rd, January 10th and January 17th. Come sit in on a rehearsal to see if the GMCC is right for you.

Performances for their Spring concert are scheduled for Saturday evening, May 5th and Sunday afternoon, May 6th. These will be held in the Grand Ballroom at Milford Town Hall, 52 Main Street, Milford, home to the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra.

Some of their highlights this past year have been their recent winter concert “Hallelujah” a mix of holiday and winter songs performed on December 2nd and 3rd. To round out their 2017 year of singing the chorus was thrilled to be chosen to sing with the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra for their Holiday Pops Concerts in December held in Milford Town Hall and again with Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, RI. These outside concerts are voluntary and chorus members enjoy participating on a professional level.

In March they are scheduled to sing with the very talented New England Tenors in concert.

While they do not require an audition, a rudimentary understanding of music and a willingness to work to benefit their sound is required. Chorus members come from thirteen towns in the Greater Milford area.

son will be charged. There is a $20 refundable fee for your music. (Cash payments are preferred, please.) Your music deposit will be refunded when music is returned at the end of the season.

Helping their teacher in his fight

Alese Cone and Allyson Charpentier are students in the HVAC Department at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School. In their Junior year their teacher Mr.Yancik was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. He missed more than half of the school year, and came back for two weeks at the beginning of this year but had to leave again because the cancer had spread. When they found out this news, the seniors did research about the cancer. They found out that Pancreatic Cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer related deaths, and it only has a nine percent survival rate.

Realizing how serious this cancer is,

they wanted to do something in honor of Mr Yancik. The HVAC seniors found the Purple Stride Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Walk that took place last November. They created the team “Yancik Strong” and made shirts and bracelets for the team to support him. In total, they sold over 200 T-Shirts and sweatshirts, and raised over $11,500 for Cancer Treatments Centers of America. After this amazing accomplishment Alese Cone, daughter of Cathi and David Cone of Uxbridge, and Allyson Carpentier, daughter of Christine and Noel Charpentier of Sutton plan on starting earlier and bringing the team back next year.

UDTC Shows Strength in Numbers Massachusetts Society of

The Uxbridge Democratic Town Committee (UDTC) held its monthly meeting in November at Uxbridge Lower Town Hall. The meeting started with Uxbridge High School Democrats providing an update on how their committee has already grown to 20 members and had a successful sign up of 35 students for voter registration. They have many activities on tap for this winter, which includes a mock election where they will be conducting a debate with two candidates. It is nice to see this continued civil engagement on the local public high school level.

The highlight of the meeting was a visit from Paul DePalo, who is the Democratic candidate for the District 7 Governor’s Council seat. Paul has shown a willingness and desire to do the work this seat needs along with much experience. His campaign manager, Michelle Keane, submitted the following press release: Paul Depalo, local attorney, launches campaign as Democratic challenger for District 7 Governor’s Council. “We need judges who understand how their decisions intersect with our communities.”

Kevin Tagliaferri was also in attendance. He is one of the State Committee Members and the Chairman of the Bellingham Democrat Town Committee. He announced at October's meeting that he is seriously considering running for the State Representative seat in 2018 for the 8th Worcester District, which includes the towns of Uxbridge, Millville, Blackstone and Bellingham. He stated at this meeting that he will be making his final decision in January. For 2018, the Caucus will be held on February 21st at 7:00 p.m. at Lower Town Hall, 21 South Main Street, in Uxbridge. BVT announces 2018 Charity Dinner Schedule

For the past seven years, the Blackstone Valley Tech Friends of Rachel Club and Culinary Arts Program teamed up to host monthly fundraising dinners to benefit several charitable organizations and causes.

Beginning in January, the Culinary Arts program will have a new partner in the BVT SkillsUSA chapter as the Friends of Rachel Club steps away from the monthly charity dinners.

“We’ve developed a familial relationship with many of the community members who attend our monthly dinners over the past few years,” said Dawn Dubois, Culinary Arts Instructor and Friends of Rachel Advisor. “I’ve really enjoyed hosting the dinners, but I wanted to pass the baton to the members of the SkillsUSA Chapter who are eager to make their mark on the event and serve the community.”

The December dinner acted as the end of one era and the beginning of the next as the Friends of Rachel Club distributed gift boxes of holiday cookies to guests to thank them for their support, and the members of the SkillsUSA chapter introduced themselves to the nearly 70 regular monthly dinner guests.

“The great thing about these dinners is it gives the kids an opportunity to do community service, share their talents, and bond with members of the community,” Dubois said.

The dinners will continue to be held at the Three Seasons Restaurant, located on the BVT campus at 65 Pleasant Street in Upton, and serve as charity fundraising events and opportunities for students to give back to the community and causes near to their heart.

Each all-you-can-eat dinner is held on a Thursday evening and consists of a themed buffet, dessert, and beverage.

The following dates and themes have been selected for the spring 2018 series: • January 25th – Roasted Pork • February 15th – Roasted Chicken • March 15th - Meatloaf • April 5th – Baked Fish • May 10th – Porketta Proceeds will benefit the Be Like Brit Foundation, the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, and the BVT SkillsUSA Chapter.

Valley Tech Annual Report now available

Blackstone Valley Tech is proud to announce that copies of its annual report are now available to residents of the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District.

Spanning fiscal year 2017 (FY17), the report covers Valley Tech’s finances and business operations, as well as student accomplishments and major developments. According to Superintendent-Director Dr. Michael F. Fitzpatrick, the document plays an important role in keeping the community informed of its vocational technical education system.

“The annual report provides District taxpayers with a detailed account of how their investment was utilized and the return it yielded over the prior fiscal year,” stated Fitzpatrick. “The report highlights the ‘strategic wizardry’ of our students and staff.”

The annual report also includes a profile of Jennifer Lannon, a 2013 graduate of the Business Technology program. After graduating from BVT, Jennifer combined her BVT education

Congratulations to eighth grader, Ethan Connolly for winning the Northbridge Middle School Geography Bee. He battled some tough opponents in the school level bee including 5th graders Johann Banaqid, Gianna Hayes, Caitlin Walker, 6th graders Marcus Reilly, Emma Vaughan, and 7th grader, James Otis. Ethan now has the opportunity to take the qualifying test to move on to the Massachusetts State Geography Bee on April 6th. If he wins the state bee, he will move on to the national bee in Washington D.C. in May.

Westfield State’s Best & Brightest Students Westfield State University recognized nine exemplary students, last month, for their leadership and service to the university and the surrounding community. The President’s Awards for Excellence in Leadership were presented in a ceremony held on the Westfield State University campus.

“These men and women have distinguished themselves from their peers for both their outstanding academic achievement and also for the unique talent and skills they have demonstrated as leaders,” said Westfield State University President Ramon S. Torrecilha, Ph.D. The President’s Award of Excellence in Leadership was created in 2007.

Eligible students must have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher and exhibit a wide range of university and community service activities. To be considered for the award, interested, eligible students were required to complete an application and write an essay related to their experiences in leadership.

The 2017 local recipients are: • Heather DeMers ’18, early childhood education and liberal studies major, Uxbridge. DeMers serves as the Relay for Life Club co-president and previously chaired the Coaches for Cancer event for two years. The vice president of the Lambda Sigma National Honor Society, DeMers has also participated in numerous volunteer efforts, including her hometown food pantry and a local soup kitchen. When asked about Heather’s contributions, Allison Gagne, staff advisor of the Relay for Life Club, said “Heather has been one of the Relay for Life Club’s most lucrative and visible fundraisers. In April the club will host its 5th Annual event, with a goal of raising its highest amount since its inception -- $50,000.”

Mr. Mariner has directed the Rock Star Theatre programs at Apple Tree Arts. He is directing Apple Tree Arts’ first entry into community theatre with an interactive, murder mystery production, Murder’s in the Heir. A graduate of Assumption College, he studied theatre/media studies and psychology. Mr. Mariner has numerous directorial and acting credits from his work in regional professional theatrical productions.

BVT invited to share Best Practices

The Blackstone Valley Vocational School District is pleased to announce the Committee on Technical and Career Institutions voted to award Blackstone Valley Tech continued accreditation in the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) at its October meeting.

Representatives from NEASC spent several days in June touring the school and speaking with students and staff as a part of the fifth-year focused follow up. The visit is an accountability step for schools and colleges accredited by NEASC that ensures schools are complying with planned and recommended changes identified in the decennial accreditation notice.

After reviewing the evaluation report of the fifth-year focused visiting team, the Committee commended Valley

Tech for its commitment to developing, refining and deploying a mission and vision for the school, its improvement distributing information about the school through its website, and the evolution of the Career Enrichment Program to support all students as they transition from career exploration to career navigation.

“We are so appreciative of the time and the valuable feedback provided to us by the NEASC visiting team. The faculty and staff worked diligently to prepare for this visit,” said Rebecca Swasey, Director of Curriculum and Instruction at BVT. “We are proud that these results have validated the hard work and commitment of our talented faculty and staff. We continue to look forward for the betterment and evolution of our academic and vocational

programs.”

Blackstone Valley Tech received its original NEASC accreditation in 1968; the most recent decennial review was held in 2012 with the next decennial review scheduled to take place in 2022.

NEASC accreditation is an “ongoing, voluntary, and comprehensive” system of accountability. It is based on standards that define the characteristics of good schools and colleges. NEASC accreditation attests to “substantial compliance with established qualitative standards, integrity in statements to the public describing the institution’s program, institutional commitment to improvement, and sufficiency of institutional resources,” according to the NEASC website.

The new site combines all of Reliant's Milford-based services (formerly located at 176 and 327 West Street) into one, comprehensive state-of-the-art facility.

The 46,000-square-foot space houses primary care (adult and pediatric) and several specialty care services including cardiology, dermatology, radiology, rehab and sports medicine, vascular surgery, and more. Also coming to Milford with the new site opening are OB/GYN services, including urogynecology and midwifery. Ring appointed to Rhode Island Historical Society

UniBank recently announced that a $2,500 donation was made to the Friends of the Bellingham Public Library in support of the community development project to renovate a portion of the adult area into a café.

UniBank’s donation funds the purchase of furnishings for the Café. Once complete, library patrons will be able to visit the Café to purchase coffee and enjoy a café-like atmosphere while working on their laptop, reading a book, or studying, all with full access to the library’s free WiFi network.

The project is also funded by the Town of Bellingham and the Library Trustees. Work on the Café will begin in early 2018.

After an extensive search, the Rhode Island Historical Society announced the appointment of Richard J. Ring, M.L.S., as Deputy Executive Director for Collections and Interpretation, a position which includes management of the largest and most significant historical collections in existence relating to Rhode Island.

During a career defined by his “goal to transform the perception of archives and historical collections from arcane and intimidating spaces into places of engagement and inspiration,” Ring was most recently Head Curator of the Watkinson Library at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., and has also served in such positions as Reference and Acquisitions Librarian at the John Carter Brown Library and Special Collections Librarian at the Providence

Public Library.

At the RIHS, Ring will lead a talented and experienced staff of seven at the institution’s Mary Elizabeth Robinson Research Center which is responsible for cataloguing, acquisitions, and conservation, while coordinating with the Goff Center for Education and Public Programs, as well as the Museum of Work & Culture, on exhibition planning and visitor services.

“We could not be more thrilled to have Rick joining us at the RIHS,” said Executive Director C. Morgan Grefe.

“We had an impressive pool of candidates, but what really stood out to us about Rick was that he so clearly shares not only our commitment to the highest standards of care for our collections, but also our dedication to students, teachers, researchers, genealo-

Fall Sessions update from High Hoops

High Hoops finishes up a fun fall session and starts winter session at the Hab. It was another successful session of High Hoops Basketball at the Hab in Uxbridge this past fall. Many kids from all over the Blackstone Valley participated in a highly anticipated, upbeat, fun and instructional session. Each week the kids learn different skills to improve their overall game. Every session is for Boys and Girls from Grades PreK to 8th Grade and the goal is for the kids to learn about the game of basketball while building confidence on and off the court.

High Hoops is in its seventh year and continues to grow with more and more kids each year. High Hoops would like to thank all the parents and volunteers for another successful session. For more details about any upcoming programs you can visit the High Hoops website at....Highhoopsbasketball.com.

Over 100 kids are registered for the winter I session and they anticipate the winter 2 session which will start in February will be more.

Celebrate the New Year with a First Day Hike at Blackstone River & Canal Heritage State Park as you walk along the canal towpath, view the river, and find signs of winter wildlife along the waterways and forest. Warm up after at the River Bend Farm Visitor Center with hot cocoa and conversation. The Visitor Center, located at 287 Oak Street, in Uxbridge will be open at noon. Registration starts at 12:30 p.m.

The hike meets at the visitor center and starts at 1:00 p.m. and is two and a quarter miles (2.25), about 90 minutes long. Be prepared for cold weather: dress in layers and wear winter boots. If conditions permit bring snowshoes and hiking poles. Dogs allowed on leash.

Make Your Own Story Hike : January 13th, 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Meet at the Visitor Center to join park staff and

special guest Marjorie Turner Hollman for this Saturday morning family program and enjoy a nature discovery walk to the Blackstone River. Participants will be encouraged to explore to find ideas to create a nature story.

Following the walk, gather in the visitor center to draw or write down discoveries to create your own book.

Child/adult teams are encouraged to assist in writing the narrative. All supplies will be provided. Walk is less than 1 mile on field paths. For ages 3 and up, siblings welcome. Inclement weather cancels. For weather updates please call the park at 508-278-7604.

Animal Disaster Team helps 2017 Hurricane Relief Effort

The Central Massachusetts Disaster Animal Response Team, Inc. (CMD ART, Inc) participated in the 2017 relief effort to aid animals, pet owners, and rescue organizations during a most unprecedented year of hurricanes and other animal-related incidents.

The 2017 hurricane season was powerful, destructive, unforgiving, and widely impactful. From strong winds to heavy rain, powerful storm surge, and tornadoes; hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria totaled damage costs in the order of hundreds of billions of dollars and will leave scars in the places they impacted for decades. Many animals perished in the hurricanes. Some were wandering strays with no owners, some separated from their owners, and unfortunately some were for varied reasons left behind without safety or care.

Over a period from June through December, CMDART team members were aiding the response and recovery effort from New Hampshire to Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico. From June into the fall, several team members assisted the Humane Society of the United States with emergency animal sheltering in the care of several Great Danes in New Hampshire. In September, team members responded with various organizations, including the American Red Cross and others to aid human and animal hurricane relief efforts in Texas following Hurricane Harvey.

“While it was hard to find the beauty in such destruction, there was a blessing that came from the response efforts,” said JoAnn Griffin, President of the Central Mass Disaster Animal Response team.

Starting in early September, CMDART partnered with the Pet Rock Festival Committee, Daisy’s Animal Rescue League (DARL), All Phase Glass of Grafton, and Julia Cuoco with Masterpiece Dog Training of Franklin to send tractor trailer loads of pet goods to needy pet owners in the rural areas of Houston and elsewhere. Many of the animal organizations present at Pet Rock contributed to the collection of goods.

“This year, animal advocates everywhere were largely concerned and focused on the series of natural disasters that were occurring, and putting our animals in harm's way”. said Charlene Arsenault and Jeannie Hebert, co-founders of Pet Rock Fest, Inc”. The timing of our annual festival was opportune to provide a platform to gather donations to be sent to Puerto Rico, Texas and others affected by disaster. With CMDART, the area's leaders in animal emergency response, pushing for help, we were more than happy to provide an assist, with donations exceeding expectations." Pet Rock Fest is held each year in early September, now at their new location, the Wyman Gordon Field in Grafton. CMDART is grateful to have received an annual donation from Pet Rock Fest for team efforts this year and in the past.

Daisy’s Animal Rescue League Director and Founder, Melissa Prescott and their team, provided needed man-

power for the effort. "It was DARL’s pleasure to collaborate with such an organized and experienced group of people. We all worked very hard to get donations to help the people and pets in need during such a tragic time.”

Locally, CMDART team members also helped at local Central Mass shelters like Second Chance of Brookfield, when dogs and cats were shipped up from hurricane-ravaged states. “This is one of the blessings that came from the hurricanes. Thousands of sheltered animals got rescued from a long-term sheltering including some scheduled for euthanasia. They were given an option for new life as a result of the hurricanes”, Griffin said. She said animal shelters located in the devastated areas found resources to ship animals out of their local shelters to make room for owned animals that have to be temporarily sheltered or missing animals that will hopefully be reunited with owners.

While the team heeded the call to help out of state, duties and training needed to continue here at home in Central Mass. Fifty–three (53) new volunteers were trained and added to the team in 2016 and 2017. Together with local emergency management and animal control, volunteers participated in local trainings, practice exercises, and continued their mission to educate the public on their personal responsibility for preparedness.

January 3rd, 2018, will start the 15th year of service for CMDART. The Board of Directors are currently seeking additional Board members to aid the administration of this non-profit.

These directors will help to support their forward progress, assist a manageable distribution of tasks, and assist the establishment of strategic short and long-range goals.
