Celebrating First Holiday Night By Christine Beauchaine Uxbridge has a long tradition of embracing Christmas. As far back as 1915, the town was lighting up the common. Uxbridge’s First Holiday Night dates back to 1997 and it’s a real community building event. Gallerani says the night is highly memorable. She loves seeing all parts of her community coming together. The month of November is spent decorating and planning. Holly Gallerani has been involved with the Uxbridge First Holiday night for over 20 years. She says that “community, service and tradition” are really important to the First Holiday Night Committee. Gallerani co-chairs the committee with Tom Bellacqua. Gallerani says the committee has a handful of dedicated volunteers who work throughout the year. She also credits loyal family and friends with supporting both the committee and

the event. Like other first night celebrations, Uxbridge First Holiday Night is not centered in any one place. The celebration works to include all of Uxbridge’s downtown community. Gallerani adds that community is thriving. One of the highlights of the event is a parade. The parade attracts about 75 floats “from local business and community organizations,” marching bands, fire trucks and Santa & Mrs. Claus. Fireworks also illuminate Capron Falls to kick off the holiday season. The Mendon Street Kitchen is open for lunch and catering throughout the year and those profits directly support the First Holiday Night and the Santa parade. Gallerani expressed gratitude for the kitchen’s patrons who showed their support during the year. In addition to Mendon Street Kitchen, volunteers staff a

food truck which attends community events during the year. Those profits also support the event. “Many volunteer hours go into fundraising,” Gallerani said. Gallerani says, as society moves forward, technology advances and our lives move at a faster pace, “it becomes harder for us to slow down and engage face to face to embrace the moment, especially during the holiday season.” The Uxbridge First Holiday Night is a way to “come together, open doors” and to showcase the community of Uxbridge. The event attracts not only Uxbridge residents but people from other communities as well. Some estimates put attendance at as many as 6,000 people. This year’s First Holiday Night will be held on December 7th from 3:00 p.m.8:00 p.m. More information can be found on the Uxbridge First Holiday Night Facebook page & also see ad on page 16.

Elena Baker, a student of Apple Tree Arts, was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall last month, by the Royal Conservatory of Music for her outstanding accomplishments on the Level 2 voice examination of the Royal Conservatory Certificate Program. Ms. Baker has been a student of the nonprofit community music and theatre arts school for several years and is the daughter of Graciela VargasBaker and Alan Baker. Ms. Baker, a seventh-grade student at Grafton Middle School, received the State Certificate of Excellence, which is awarded in each state to the student who receives the highest marks in their discipline and level for the examination. “Her mother and I were excited to learn that Elena received the very highest rating the RCM gives and the best of anyone who took the test at Apple Tree Arts during this time,” said Mr. Baker. Apple Tree Arts became a site for the Royal Conservatory Examinations one year ago to provide instrumental and vocal students with the opportunity to

Elena Baker as Elsa take the examinations, an integral part of the RCM’s renowned system of study. Exams are offered to give students a challenge to prepare for and overcome, help

them set goals and round-out their musical education. The program helps build students’ confidence too. “Elena had to perform two prepared pieces and do sight readings for the Level Voice 2 exam which involves learning and performing a new four-measure piece on site. She had to read and sing the notes to the music in the correct rhythm,” her dad explained. “Elena had to show her technical ability in vocal expressions and ear training tests as well,” he added. The prepared pieces were based on specific mandatory selections. “It’s an excellent way over a course of a few years for students and parents to see how they (students) are progressing in their lessons and encourages them to improve, too,” Ms. Vargas-Baker added. Elena prepared for the examinations with the assistance of her voice teacher Alaina Calloway Bolton, music education director at Apple Tree Arts.
