Save The Farnum House; A Prominent Piece Of History

Susan Franz Uxbridge Historical Commission

THiNgS YOU MAY NOT KNOW

The Cornet John Farnum House is among the oldest colonial structures remaining in Uxbridge. it has been an important part of First Night celebrations, school tours, and is the home of the Uxbridge Historical Society.

Activities at the Farnum House are currently on hold until the structure can be stabilized. At the Spring Town Meeting on May 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Valley Chapel, 14 Hunter Road we will review an architectural assessment and seek funding for the next steps to preserve this site. To follow are a few things you may not have known about this fascinating historic asset, located in downtown Uxbridge.

WHAT iS iN THE FARNUM HOUSE COllECTiONS?

The Uxbridge Historical Society curates an extensive collection of furniture, art, photos, and documents. in the collection is a colonial-era bed that was used by President george Washington. The bed came from Samuel Taft's Tavern near Hartford Ave West.

After his stay at the inn, Washington sent a letter mentioning the Taft's daughters Patty and Polly with some fine fabric for the girls. To Patty "who waited more upon us than Polly did" he added five guineas (a large amount of money). Washington suggested the girls write to let him know what they did with the gifts.

Other precious items include deeds reaching back to the 18th Century, accounts of payments made to Revolutionary War soldiers, and letters composed during the Civil War. in 2016, Farnum family descendants presented a silver cream and sugar set along with a brass tankard.

The photo collections include damage to local churches from the 1938 hurricane, and the 2007 Bernat Mill Fire.

Some of the more unusual documents are a permit to local pharmacist Theodore Flagg to dispense alcohol during prohibition (presumably, for 'medicinal purposes') and a 1751 bounty paid to dispatch a wolf.

By 1718, the Farnums acquired large tracts around the Chocolog Creek and along the banks of

the Blackstone and Mumford rivers. in 1726, the Proprietors record more land surveys taking place "by his house."

As Uxbridge separated from Mendon, the first Town Meeting was held at the Farnum House on July 25th, 1727. Another Town Meeting agreed to construct a meeting house and to purchase "fifteen gallons of good rum" for its raising.

Farnum's holdings near Quaker Highway were inherited by his son, Moses, and then by his grandson, also named Moses. Unusually, for an English colony of this period, this large Uxbridge estate was not kept primarily for the sole benefit of the eldest male heir. Moses Farnum's 1780 will directs that his widow, married daughters and even younger sons receive substantial portions of his vast land holdings.

HOW HAS THE BUilDiNg BEEN PRESERVED THiS lONg?

initially, the town provided an annual investment of $2000 to the Historical Commission to care for the house, acquire historical objects, and maintain the building. The budget also provided seed money for grants that added to the value of the investment. Various grants, local service organizations, and the Uxbridge Historical Society also contributed to the care of the building and collections.

The annual budget was reduced in 1984 to $1700 and then increased to $4,474 in 2010. After that, it appears to have disappeared entirely as a budget line item when Town Hall combined the HHS, Culture & Recreation budgets beginning in 2011.

in today's money, the original $2,000 allocation would be worth nearly $10,000 per year. if the town had kept the same investment level that it had before 1984, then, at least, $300,000 in today's money could have been invested in protecting the historic structure and operating the site.

All homeowners know that neglected buildings deteriorate with time. On-going investment is necessary or this and other historic sites will have no future. if we don't act now, we risk the loss of fascinating stories that paint the history of Uxbridge over more than three centuries.

We hope you will attend the Spring Town Meeting and support the preservation efforts for this remarkable piece of Uxbridge History.

Letters to the Editor_ Support Tina Ryan for Uxbridge School Committee

Dear Readers,

i am writing to share my support for candidate Tina Ryan for the Uxbridge School Committee. She is a committed parent, childcare worker, community participant, school council member, and a fierce advocate for all children. She wants to ensure that all Uxbridge students, including our special education students, English language learners, athletes, and gifted, have the resources they need to succeed. She understands the importance of activities like sports, drama, music, and clubs. They are essential to connecting kids to their schools and their communities and can improve mental health, academic/test scores, and attendance.

Tina will strive for increased transparency and engagement between the School Committee members and school counsels, PTOs, SEPAC, athletes, community stakeholders, and parents. She recognizes the need for serious discussions about short and long-term planning for new school buildings.

Most importantly, i trust that she will always do what is right even when it is difficult. She has shown her dedication and resiliency time and time again for our schools and our town. As a School Committee member, she would be able to put her advocacy and experience to work for our children. i hope you will consider giving Tina Ryan your vote for the Uxbridge School Committee.

Sincerely,

Who is Matthew Kling, and why is he running for Uxbridge School Committee?

Dear Uxbridge Voters,

Hello, i am writing this letter to introduce myself to you as a candidate for Uxbridge School Committee in the upcoming May election.

i am a long-time resident of Uxbridge, having lived here for more than 20 years. My wife and i purchased our first home here in 2003 so that we could settle and raise our family. Our two children have experienced the full breadth of the Uxbridge Public School system, having started in Pre-K and now made their way into Uxbridge High School where both serve as class presidents. My wife has most recently served as the Math Coach at Taft Early learning Center. i have been an involved member of the community as a soccer coach for many years and am still involved today. Professionally, i serve as Vice President of Engineering of a rapidly growing company. Prior to this, i worked at Northeastern Univer-

sity where i led innovative research initiatives.

in all facets of my life, i attempt to follow one simple rule – that you should “treat others as you would like to be treated”. This rule espouses a core value that i hold highest – Empathy. This core value requires one to “understand or share the feelings of another” and encompasses many other positive qualities that include kindness, respect, fairness, trust, and more.

i have an unwavering belief that a school system is the single most important asset of a town, and it is my intention to give back to the town i have called home for over two decades through service as an Uxbridge School Committee member. When fostered and guided properly, a successful school system will lead to growth and prosperity of our children and families as well as our town. i believe that our schools have shown great progress in

Supporting Kling for School Committee

To my fellow Uxbridge citizens, i am writing this letter to endorse Matthew Kling for the Uxbridge School Committee. i have had the pleasure of knowing Matthew for many years as a soccer coach and fellow parent. He is a long time resident of the town with two children in the public schools. i have seen his deep commitment and willingness to be an advocate for children while coaching. i believe he will work hard to gather input from parents, teachers and citizens of Uxbridge to understand what is

recent years but also that there is always room for more improvement. As a committee member i would ensure that we are always seeking ways to solicit feedback and make changes that are necessary to continue our path of progression. i commit to you that i would fulfill my duties with empathy, ensuring that i will always hear all arguments without judgment, seeking to understand all viewpoints and to work together with all parties.

Therefore, i humbly ask for your vote on Election Day - May 21st for election to a 3-year term on the Uxbridge School Committee – so that i may serve the citizens of this town by helping to lead our schools to continued and new levels of growth so that we may provide our children with the best education possible – together, with me as your voice.

Sincerely,

working well and what may need improvement in our school district. As a teacher myself, in another district, i believe he holds the qualities that Uxbridge needs on a School Committee. He is passionate and sincere. The students and staff of Uxbridge deserve someone who possesses these qualities. i believe he will work diligently on all topics brought forth to the School Committee.

Sincerely,

Taft Early Learning Center accepting Preschool Lottery Applications

The integrated Preschool Program at Taft Early learning Center will be accepting lottery applications for enrollment in the 2024-25 school year now through April 12th, 2024.

This lottery is for students who will serve as peer models/community peers only. Students who receive services through an iEP are identified separately for enrollment in the Preschool program. The lottery system is a random selection process for determining which students will attend given the number of available seats in our program. The lottery system aims to give all applicants an equal chance of being admitted and occurs when more students apply for enrollment than seats available.

All lottery applicants' names will be placed in a computer-generated randomization to ensure that the lottery is truly random and free of any human error. if all of the enrollment seats have

become filled after the lottery, the students who were not selected will be added to a waiting list.

Our integrated preschool program is designed to meet the needs of children starting at age 3, who are typically developing, as well as children who have been identified with special needs. The classes are multi-age, standards based, and are taught by a dual certified Preschool Teacher in both Early Childhood and Special Education. We

offer a variety of half-day and full-day classes. The public school calendar is followed and parents provide their own transportation.  in order to submit a lottery application, the following conditions must be met:

1.) You must be a resident of Uxbridge

2.) Your child must be at least three years of age by August 31, 2024 for the 2024-2025 school year. Applications can be completed online at: Uxbridgeschools.com under the Taft

Whitinsville Social Library votes to discontinue late fines on borrowed materials

Whitinsville Social library will no longer charge late fines on books and

The governing body of the library, the Whitinsville Social library Board of Trustees, voted in favor of removing late fines on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. This change went into effect immediately. Whitinsville Social library joins other large and small public library systems across the country to turn the page on late fines. WSl is the 149th library in its consortium, CWMARS, to go fine free. This change is a part of a national institutional movement, guided by the recommendations of the American library

going fine free does not mean that patrons will not have to bring library materials back to the library. items will still have due dates and materials will still need to be returned. Fees for lost or damaged items will remain on the user’s account. Most library materials are automatically renewed one time. However, if an item is not returned, or is returned damaged, patrons will still be charged replacement costs.

Existing fines for overdue items will be forgiven. Overdue fines will continue on very few items: the hotspots, museum passes, and the telescope.

Studies show that libraries that have eliminated late fines see no impact on return rates and in fact, the elimination of fines increases the use of library materials. Whitinsville Social library’s Director Rebecca Sasseville felt it was imperative to create an environment that feels welcoming rather than punitive for all the library’s users. “i look forward to welcoming new and returning patrons to the library because of this wonderful decision by the Board of Trustees.”

For any questions visit the library’s website: www.northbridgemass.org/ WSl or call at 508-234-2151.

Meet the unsung Heroine behind the New Deal

Frances Perkins has been described as one of America’s most influential women of the first half of the 20th century. Yet, she sits in the back seat of American history.

On Wednesday, April 10th at 7 p.m. the Douglas Historical Society will host a portrayal of the country’s first woman cabinet secretary, Frances Perkins. Meet the Unsung Heroine Behind the New Deal (Part 1) will take place on Miss Perkins 144th  birthday and cake will be served at the E.N. Jenckes Store Museum at 283 Main Street in Douglas. guests will learn about the tragedies, trials, and triumphs that shaped Miss Perkins’ early life and career –fine-tuned her talents and toughened her skin. This prepared her for the rigors of service as the first female Secretary of labor during the tumultuous years of the FDR administration. This is part one of a two-part series. guests will soak up  stories from this woman who defied the conventions of her middle-class Worcester upbringing to become a driving force behind workplace laws we take for granted: these include the fire-safety code, 40-hour workweek, Social Security and much more. learn about the strategy she used to tap into the power of the notorious politicians of Tammany Hall; they will hear details around the infamous New York factory fire that sparked her years of relentless campaigning to (among other things) eliminate hazardous, filthy workplace conditions, enact a

minimum wage, and eliminate child labor in New York. later, as Secretary of labor Miss Perkins would incorporate many of these into the New Deal. guests will learn about Miss Perkins’s personal and professional trials and triumphs as the wife of an untreatable, mentally ill husband; of a mother and woman who forged her way through a man’s world. They will gain access to her secrets to building alliances and staring down bullies to help make government an ally for working adults, children, and retirees.

Janet Parnes of Historical Portrayals by lady J, Millis will portray Miss Perkins. (www.women-history.com).

Vernal Pool Afternoon Exploration Hike

Warmer days and gentle night rains, bet you have heard wood frogs in the past week, that lovely sound of ducks quacking in the woods. little cool yet for “peep peep peep”, peepers! Visitors are finding some wood frog egg masses and possible salamander egg deposits, so join Ranger Viola Sunday, April 7th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the West Hill Dam office, 518 E. Hartford Avenue, Uxbridge. Join us for a short hike to some resident Vernal Pools, in daylight, to observe if Big Night, migration and egg laying have or is occurring. Cancelled for heavy rain or snow. For more information we post updates on Facebook and Ranger Viola is happy to take your calls at (978)318-8417.

They only return in future years, eggs hatch and adults emerge before the pools dry out. No gathering of any animals will be permitted!! Vernal Pools and these species are highly protected.

Wilkes eyes Board Seat

Dear editor and Voters of Northbridge, My name is Michael J. Wilkes, and i am running to be your next Selectman! i am proud to have called Northbridge my home for more than the past eighteen years. i have gone through the Northbridge School system, been a part of multiple clubs, worked in town for small businesses, and currently have the privilege of serving my town and fellow residents on the Planning Board, being the youngest elected member. i am also involved on a number of subcommittees and regional delegations such as the Econ. Dev. Committee, Bylaw Review Committee, Community Preservation Committee, and The Central Mass Regional Planning Commission– where i am also the youngest member of the roughly seventy member delegation representing a total of 750,000 combined residences.

i am currently a Junior at Bryant University dual majoring in Finance and Politics & law, with a minor in global Studies. i was first elected to the Redevelopment Authority at eighteen, and have since then held different offices in town and have

maintained an almost perfect attendance for over three years. i am a firm believer in working together, to promote common sense solutions that help move the town forward, while still respecting and honoring our past and traditions. i am a firm believer in fighting for the taxpayers, and promoting fiscal responsibility. i am proud that i have worked over the past few years to deliver measurable results to my community.

i am running because i want to give back to a community that has given me so much, and continues to do so. i believe my age is a very real asset, and will provide the board with a new fresh perspective and fresh new energy. i also believe my experience over these past three years across multiple boards will provide the Board of Selectmen with invaluable insight.

As i said together i believe we can move Northbridge forward! We need leaders who are willing and able to mix their vigor, youth, energy, and experience to help move Northbridge forward! i look forward to meeting so many of you over the coming month and i hope to EARN your vote on May 21st, 2024!

On Tuesday, May 7th at 1 p.m. at the Sutton Senior Center, 19 Hough Road, Sutton, the Society will welcome Ed Chrostowksi, Metal Detectorist and Society member, who will share his unique finds over several years from local Sutton properties.

From Revolutionary War artifacts to everyday items from the 18th  and 19th centuries, Ed not only finds the items, but makes every attempt to tie them to the individuals who lived on the prop-

erty telling the bigger story of life so many years ago.  Join us to understand why John Paul Jones may have visited Sutton Center, why a woman may have a special heel plate on her shoe, or how spoons were made in the early 19th century.

Since the Town of Douglas does not cover the expenses or perform the work at our historic park, the Douglas Common Preservation Society, relies on donations from the community, both individuals and businesses, to cover these Common expenses and make our work possible. if you would like to volunteer a little time to help with this, please check the Douglas Common Facebook page for dates once they have been scheduled.

As we move into Spring we can look forward to some bright additional color at the Common as the 1,350+ daffodil bulbs we planted last Fall burst into bloom. They are already starting to push up through the soil. Hopefully they will be in full bloom for the Earth Day Celebration on April 20th. Plans are underway to have a free Planting Station at the Common for the children to come and paint pots and learn how to plant seeds to take home on Earth Day, followed at 2 PM by the Fundraiser drawings.

Cub Scout Pack 316 collected Heroes and Helpers donations during their Annual Popcorn Sale, and were able to provide some tasty snacks to the teachers and administrators at Douglas Primary School and Douglas Elementary School! Thank you to all of our generous supporters who purchased popcorn or made donations. This has allowed the Scouts in our Pack to give back to their community, but also to have really cool adventures!

Our Pack provides lifelong memories and friendship for elementary school aged children in Douglas and the surrounding area. Our fundraiser helps Scouts participate in many fun and exciting activities! Scouts also serve the community through service projects such as cleaning up trash for Earth Day and honoring fallen service members by replacing American flags on graves of veterans in local cemetery. To support our 2024 campaign donate online by visiting https://trailsend.com/store/scout/P94X0TJZ, where you’ll find a delicious selection, plus Heroes and Helpers donations which help provide a gift of popcorn to our first responders, troops at-home or overseas, veterans, military families, food banks, and charitable organizations. Purchases can ship anywhere in the United States.

The One Act Play Festival is back!

ValleyCAST, the arts and culture arm of Open Sky Community Services will be hosting their One Act Play Festival in April. They are happy to announce the return of this popular festival which has been on hiatus since the shutdown due to COViD-19 pandemic in 2020. With applications still being accepted, they look forward to submissions from college theater groups, community theater companies, school drama clubs, and independent actors both new and familiar to performing on stage. All abilities are welcome and there are no submission fees.

Performances will be held on April 5th & 6th at 7:00 p.m. in the Singh Performance Center, 60 Douglas Road, Whitinsville with the potential to have an additional performance date on April 7th at 2 p.m. depending on submissions. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 per person or $15 per family and are valid for entry to all nights of the festival.

Original works, published one act plays, scene work, or monologues can be performed during the festival. After each 10-to-30-minute performance the judges will provide instructive feedback with three awards to be presented after the final performance of the festival. Awards will be presented for best original act, best ensemble, and best in show.

“it has been four years since the shutdown and the lingering impacts are still being felt in our theater community,” says Mary laliberte, Open Sky Community Services Assistant Director of Community Outreach. “Bringing back the One Act Play Festival with some friendly competition is a great way to help support local talent and creativity. We encourage everyone to show their support by joining us at this fun and entertaining event.”      For more information and/or to submit a One Act, visit: www.openskycs.org/ valleycast or contact Mary laliberte at: mary.laliberte@openskycs.org | 774502-8648.

Recycle Paper and Electronics at Uxbridge Lions Shred Event

it’s that time again when the Uxbridge lions provide a much-needed service to the community. Folks discover after tax time that they have way too many old documents and receipts hanging around the house. What should you shred? Just about all of them. Bring them to the VFW Parking lot, Route 16 and Cross Road in Uxbridge, on Saturday, April 27, between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. You can watch the Pellegrino Truck securely shred your material. On Site Computers will guarantee the secure destruction of electronic devices including phones, electrical cords, DVDs, cameras, USB

cables, flat screen monitors, keyboards, radios and stereos.

Contributions to this semi-annual service help fund the lions Club’s many charities. From the donation of $5 per copy paper sized box or per electronic item, many local activities and organizations are supported. in addition, tons of paper have been recycled over the many years of these shred events.

“No need to even get out of the car,” says Mike Sulham, Uxbridge lions President. “Just follow the signs and a lion will be at your door.”
