Celebrating 20 years of UniBank Greenway Challenge

The 20th Anniversary UniBank Greenway Challenge, was held on a beautiful Fall day on Saturday, September 25th. The race featured fun, exciting and challenging running, biking and paddling segments that took athletes from Lincoln Woods State Park, Rhode Island up through the Blackstone Valley with transition sites in Douglas State Forest & Riverbend Farms to the finish line at the Whitin Community Center’s Whitin Park, in Whitinsville, Massachusetts over 50 miles later. This year’s adventure race included street running, trail running, paddling, street bike, and mountain bike segments, eight unique segments in total, that was designed and crafted to bring athletes through one of the most beautiful and historic regions of New England, the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor.

Almost 150 athletes across 36 teams were charged with competition as they participated in this milestone “Adventure Race Like No Other”.

Lions Shredapalooza Event Everyone loves a “palooza” so the Uxbridge Lions are cashing in on the craze. Saturday, November 6th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, the Lions will hold their second recycling shred event of the year at the VFW parking lot on Route 16 and Cross Road in Uxbridge.

The fundraising event supports community organizations and individuals and contributes to Lions’ charities such as sight and hearing research, disaster relief and diabetes education and more.

Once again, with services supplied by Onsite Computers of Uxbridge and Pellegrino Trucking Co. of Sutton,

paper and electronics are securely shredded and guaranteed destroyed for $5 per copy paper sized box or for $5 each for the disposal of devices such as phones, electrical cords, DVDs, cameras, USB cables, flat screen monitors, keyboards and radios and stereos.

A clearly marked lane with Lions volunteers will greet vehicles and assist in removing materials to be shredded.

People are invited to witness the shredding or to receive a Certificate of Guaranteed Destruction for electronics.

Senior Thanksgiving Project needs your help The Uxbridge Senior Center is organizing their annual Thanksgiving lunch distribution to over 200 seniors and homebound. They are looking for assistance from volunteers to make this project a success. The amount of organization and preparation is surmountable, but with many hands, the work is attainable and rewarding.

The play is being presented by a full range of actors in grades 8 - 12. The crew, led by Stage Manager Lindsey Vario, has been working hard building sets and setting lighting cues to create the illusion of Northern Maine in the wintertime. A Tribute to Toni Ann Picariello (June 12th, 1949 – September 6th, 2021), Who Served on the Town Finance Committee for Decades.

For the past twenty-seven years, I have had the pleasure to serve as the Superintendent-Director of the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District. During that time, I have made multiple budget presentations to the Bellingham Finance Committee.

Those interactions allowed me to witness the passion, enthusiasm, and commitment to public service of long-term member Toni Ann Picariello, who served on the Finance Committee for decades.

Somewhat short in stature, Toni was a fireball to be reckoned with during fiscal deliberations. Always focused, she never hesitated to probe for greater background or insight into the process used to shape our budget requests. As a presenter, I found her to be consistent, fair, and sincere with a style and technique that established a level playing field where a standard for all would be measured.

Toni had an eclectic background that included unique life experiences. She had a preference for the Beatles and graduated from New England Tractor Trailer Training School in 1991. So it’s no wonder we found a connection through our vocational-technical system. After a Finance Committee presentation, Toni would invariably present me with requests to save money for the town. The work requests extended like a special task from a parent would be to repair a technical gadget or even a typewriter, and of course, we always attempted to assist.

I recognize the sacrifices that a town service role demands. Therefore on behalf of the Blackstone Valley Vocational Regional School District, I convey heartfelt appreciation to this former public servant and her family.

A well-known member of the Bellingham community for over 40 years, Toni Ann Picariello, will be missed.

Sutton Historical Society hosts Bald Eagle presentation BVT plans Admissions Open House Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School will hold its Annual Admissions Open House for parents, guardians, and prospective students on Wednesday, November 17th.

Register for either Session 1: 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. or Session 2: 6:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. by visiting the school's website to sign up in advance.

The evening is an ideal opportunity to tour the expanded state-of-the-art facility in person at 65 Pleasant Street in Upton and see for yourself how BVT is transforming education and the lives of its students. Masks are required. Meet BVT staff members who will be on hand as a resource to answer questions about academics, student support services, student activities, and the admissions process. The schedule of events will include mini-sessions featuring the Special Education program and the supports available for its students while at BVT and during the application process. Also, learn more about the Spanish Immersion program and how to enroll in it.

On Tuesday, November 2nd, at 7:00 p.m., the Sutton Historical Society will host Bill Reid, Chief Ranger of The Last Green Valley, for a presentation entitled, “The Return of the Bald Eagle.” The Last Green Valley is a National Heritage Corridor covering 35 towns in Eastern Connecticut and South-Central Massachusetts with a rich history in a surprisingly rural landscape. With 84% forest and farm, The Last Green Valley is the last swath of

dark night sky in the coastal sprawl between Boston and Washington DC. Information on this National Heritage Corridor can be found at thelastgreenvalley.org.

Chief Ranger Reid’s presentation will showcase how our country’s majestic national bird (Haliaeetus leucocephalus as it is named scientifically) is benefitting from enhanced protection and innovative efforts to boost its wild population in Southern New England. He

will speak about bald eagles and the work to increase their ecological success within our region. With bald eagle sightings throughout Sutton, this presentation should prove quite interesting.

This free event is open to all members and the general public of all ages. The

town News Douglas Historical Society celebrates generous donations The non-profit Douglas Historical Society raised over $11,000 in September with the creation of a multilevel 275th Anniversary Donors Circle that acknowledged the celebration of the town’s 275th Anniversary. It focused on upcoming efforts to preserve and promote the town’s history and the iconic E.N. Jenckes Store Museum located at the corner of Depot and Main Streets in downtown.

Over 45 generous donors have contributed to the fundraising effort to date. Among them three donated at the Hiram Walker level (he was born in Douglas!), six at the Axe Mill level and 17 at the 275th Anniversary level. All were recognized on a large donor thank you board outside the Store Museum at Octoberfest.

“Contributions to our 275th Anniversary Donors Circle will help us undertake much needed repairs to the Store Museum including its painting, porch repair and barn upkeep; develop educational programs that reach more people both through digital tools and through terrific programs at the Store Museum,” Society Vice President Shirley Mosczynski explained. “We want this nearly 190 year old building to be here when

the next quarter century anniversary comes around, when Douglas will turn 300 years old!”

The Society’s fundraising committee has a goal of raising $20,000 before the end of the year. “All funds raised through the Donors Circle will contribute to our ongoing efforts to protect this unique and historic building and to promote the rich history of Douglas,” Laurie Church, President of the Society added.

Developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin, the BRIM Initiative is an interactive faculty development training program that helps medical faculty recognize that cultural stereotypes about a person’s race, gender, age, sexual orientation, and weight can influence judgments and decisions in unwanted, unintended ways. The Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine dedicated its Founders Award to Dema C. Daley who served as executive director from 1987

to 2000, and then as executive vice president from 2001 to 2002 until her death. During her 15 years as leader, Ms. Daley helped the Association become the preeminent professional organization in graduate medical education noted for its promotion of excellence and innovation in leadership and educational methodologies.

Simon Fairfield Library posts November Events The Simon Fairfield Library, located at 290 Main Street in Douglas, has announced the following events: NOVEMBER BOOK CLUBS Since we restarted in-person programming, our storytimes and book clubs for kids have been booked solid. I want to remind everyone that we also have book clubs for adults that are a lot of fun! If you're looking for a bit of socialization, try one out. Book clubs are not scary formal affairs where you have to criticize the reading and then provide some kind of profound exegesis that will stand up to academic rigor. You can do that if you want, but book clubs are really just get-togethers that use the book as a vehicle to start a conversation that can go anywhere! The last two SciFi book clubs devoted way more conversation time to kids and board games than N.K. Jemisin, and that's ok!

November 4th @ 6:30 p.m.: The Greatest Book Club Ever is meeting to talk about “Dead Until Dark” by Charlaine Harris. This is the first book in the series that the HBO series True Blood is based upon. This group always talks about books that have been turned into movies or TV shows.

November 4th @ 7 p.m.: While not technically a book club, Dick Vanden Berg's monthly talks on American his-

tory are awesome for all ages. He is a retired teacher and has been walking us through the formation of the country with easy-to-digest, engaging presentations.

November 9th @ 6:30 p.m.: The Intrepid Readers are discussing “The Outlier”: the Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter by Kai Bird (this book is a whopper, so start reading early). They always have the tastiest homemade treats.

Also November 9th at 6:30 p.m.: If Jimmy Carter isn't your thing and you like hanging out with geeky people, join us in the loft to chat about Isaac Asimov's Foundation. You should definitely read the book with us before watching the new TV series.

The Wonder of Christmas Bazaar & Crafts Fair Our Lady of Good Help and St. Theresa’s Shrine will hold their Annual Bazaar & Crafts Fair on Friday, December 3rd from 4 to 7 P.M., Saturday, December 4th from 9 A.M. to 7 P.M., and on Sunday, December 5th from 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. The event will be held at St. Theresa’s Church Hall, 35 Dion Drive in Nasonville.

This is a major fundraiser for the Parish and the volunteers are eagerly looking forward to sharing the many exciting offerings they have planned.

Tables will include a Penny Social with dozens of gift certificates, beautiful hand-made crafts, luscious locallymade sweets, delicious and beautifully boxed local chocolates, Christmas gifts and specialty items, gift baskets, and one-of-a-kind knitted items. The Shrine bookstore will be represented this year featuring books, rosary beads, cards, and other religious items.

The kitchen will be open all weekend serving Chowder & Clam Cakes on Friday along with burgers, hot dogs, dynamites, grilled cheese sandwiches, fries, and onion rings. On Saturday and Sunday, hot soups are on the menu, along with the other offerings.

Raffles at the Bazaar include the “12 Days of Christmas” card raffle, “Split the Pot” (50/50) cash raffle, a beautifully-crafted toy/blanket chest, along with the very popular cash raffle with a grand prize of $1,000.

Father Michael J. McMahon, Pastor of OLGH/St. Theresa’s was recently appointed as Administrator of St. Patrick’s Parish in Harrisville. St. Patrick’s will be holding their Christmas Bazaar on the same weekend and at the same times but with different foods, gifts, and prizes. Locations for the new National Park Service signs include one on the town common at the intersection of Church Street and Linwood Avenue, another in front of the Town Hall Annex at 14 Hill Street, and a third in front of the 1826 Red Brick Mill Building at the Alternatives’ Whitin Mill Complex at 50 Douglas Road.

“It has been wonderful to re-affirm our national park’s partnerships with the Town of Northbridge and the Northbridge Historical Commission by working with these partners and the National Heritage Corridor to finalize and install the important new wayside interpretive panels and refurbished map,” said Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park Superintendent Eric Breitkreutz. “Whitinsville’s key role in the Valley’s and America’s Industrial Revolution, and the amazing mill village system that remains pre-

served here, is a major part of our national park’s interpretive story. It is a pleasure to help the town and our national park better tell this story in Whitinsville with these beautiful new wayside panels.”

The restoration of Northbridge Historical Commission’s map was BHC’s project with Northbridge Town Historian Ken Warchol. The project was made possible by Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT), which helped clean and refresh the original map and donated the newly printed sign.

Sophomore students of the Painting and Design Technology department, led by Tom Lamont, also repainted the existing sign frame. Additional photography and graphic support came from Blackstone Heritage Corridor Photography Ambassador Bob Evans and Experience Design of Providence, RI. “35 years ago, on November 10th, the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor was established to celebrate the ongoing story of the American Industrial Revolution,” noted Devon R. Kurtz, Executive Director at BHC. “Today, we unveiled the first official National Park wayside

exhibit highlighting Whitinsville’s contribution to the Corridor’s narrative.

Together, the BHC and the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park look forward to sharing more such milestones in the future.”

“A National Park along the Blackstone River and Canal was a dream of local leaders back in the Great Depression,” noted Senator Richard Moore, BHC’s Board Chair. “Thanks to Congressman Jim McGovern and others in the Massachusetts-Rhode Island Congressional delegation, we can finally celebrate a new National Historical Park in the Blackstone Valley. Sheila M. (O’Neill) Curran, 75 Sheila M. (O’Neill) Curran, 75, of Uxbridge, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, October 8th surrounded by her loving family.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Joseph P. Curran; her 2 daughters, Mary Curran and her husband Donald Marini of Northbridge and Margaret Curran Olson and her husband Derek of Millbury; 2 granddaughters, Maeve and Rian Olson; 2 brothers, Terrance J. O’Neill of Brookfield and William J. O’Neill of Winchendon; nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her infant daughter Paula Curran and 3 brothers, Thomas,

Brian, and Michael O’Neill.

Born in Milford, MA on April 14th, 1946 she was the daughter of T. Vincent and Helen (Provost) O’Neill and grew up in Milford. She was a graduate of Milford High School and Worcester State College, and earned her Master’s Degree from Assumption College. She taught both Spanish and French at Milford High School for many years before taking a break to raise her girls. She returned to teaching at Medway High School, and was awarded Teacher of the Year before her retirement in 2008. Sheila has lived in Uxbridge the past 40 years.

A woman of great faith, Sheila was a very involved member of St. Mary’s Church.

She served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, was a member of their St.

Mr. Powell worked as a reliability engineer for the Raytheon Company in Waltham for 35 years. He was proud of his participation in the NASA Space Shuttle and Patriot Missile programs. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving on the Willis A. Lee DL-4.

He was born in Waltham in 1939, the son of the late Philip and Ella (Spinney) Powell. He was a graduate of Fitchburg State University.

Clyde enjoyed spending his time in Naples, Florida. His hobbies included computers, gardening, photography, and the New England Patriots. He also enjoyed music, especially the Boston

Daniel Silva, 71, of Brockton, formerly of Milford, died peacefully, Sunday, October 10th, 2021 at the V.A. Medical Center in Brockton.

He was born in Milford on October 22nd, the son of the late John M. and Lucia (Lopes) da Silva.

A 1969 graduate of Milford High School, he then went on to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was the brother of Maria E. da Silva of Franklin, Gloria A. Linnell of Medway, and the late John C. da Silva. Danny is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was a great friend to many and a caring soul to everyone he met. Danny accepted his many struggles in life with a positive outlook and was always ready to help others. He is fondly remembered by his extended family, the Morgados, and his Godson Daniel E. Morgado.

Wreaths Across America add U.S.S.F. to services Recently, national nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) announces the addition of the United States Space Force to the set of ceremonial wreaths that are provided to all participating locations nationwide to be used on National Wreaths Across America Day – this year scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021. This is the eighth ceremonial wreath with corresponding service flag to be provided by the organization to all registered, participating locations. The ceremonial wreaths represent each branch of the service, and POW/MIA, and are encouraged to be on display as part of each National Wreaths Across America Day ceremony held.

The U.S. Space Force, which was established December 20, 2019, with the enactment of the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, is the first new military service since the Army Air Forces were reorganized as the U.S. Air Force in 1947. The U.S. Space Force organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to the joint force.

“The U.S. Space Force traces its roots to the beginning of the Cold War, with the first Army Air Forces space programs starting in 1945, and the first major employment of space forces culminated in the Gulf War, where they proved so critical to the U.S.-led coalition,” said Joe Reagan, U.S. Army Veteran and Director of Military & Veteran Outreach, Wreaths Across America. “As an organization whose mission is to Remember the fallen, Honor those that serve and Teach the next generation the value of freedom, it is imperative that we recognize all those who have stepped up to serve as Guardians and continue to protect those Freedoms all Americans enjoy.”

Since in founding as a 501c3 in 2007, WAA has provided seven live, handmade balsam veterans’ wreaths – each with a corresponding service branch flag, including a POW/MIA flag – to each registered participating location to use in that year’s National Wreaths Across America Day ceremony.

Moving forward, eight wreaths will be provided along with the U.S. Space Force delta service flag. Each participating location is coordinated by local

volunteers who are encouraged to host a ceremony using these wreaths as part of their National Wreaths Across America Day ceremony and invite veterans, current servicemembers and their families to participate.

This year, more than 2,700 participating locations are registered to take part in National Wreaths Across America Day – Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021 – each one will receive the now eight ceremonial wreaths for this event.

SHARP Grants awarded Mass Humanities. “As we continue to combat COVID-19, these funds will save jobs, build capacity, and allow organizations to develop new programs to serve their communities.”

Mass Humanities received requests for funding from more than 140 organizations. Grants of up to $15,000 were awarded to retain or recruit staff, replace lost revenue, and rebuild audiences. The SHARP grants conclude a year in which Mass Humanities awarded more than $1.7 million to 240 organizations around the state.

Central region recipients: Worcester Historical Museum, Worcester Art Museum, Fort Devens Museum, Preservation Worcester, Old Sturbridge Inc., Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, Inc., Literacy Volunteers of Greater Worcester, Groton History Center, Willard House & Clock Museum, Inc.

Mass Humanities has announced grants to 90 organizations across Massachusetts to support the response and recovery of the cultural sector from the ongoing impacts of the coronavirus.

Totaling almost $1 million, the “Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan (SHARP)” grants were made possible through funding provided to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) by the American Rescue Plan.

As the state affiliate of NEH, Mass Humanities sought to provide emergency funding to the smallest organizations, including local museums, historical societies, and historic sites. More than half of the SHARP recipients have budgets of $300,000 or less.

Bolandrina brother-sister team have opened a Ramen shop The brother and sister team of Gino and Jesi Bolandrina (Douglas High School alumni 2012 and 2009, respectively) along with Jesi’s fiancé Nick Pietroniro of Connecticut have opened a Ramen shop, Kurukuru Ramen: A New Kind of Ramen Experience.

In the Japanese language Kuru Kuru means whirling, revolving, spinning, going round and round. At KuruKuru Ramen, the team wants to show guests that food is always a revolving experience. The team believes that guests can enjoy delicious, affordable, and unique food anytime, anywhere. Ramen is a soulful food. It can be enjoyed by comfort food seekers just as well as it can be enjoyed by adventurous foodies. According to Jesi, “KuruKuru dining experience is memorable because it’s made by people who truly care about the craft and the quality of your meal, every single time.”

Jesi holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Journalism from Northeastern University. She has over 7 years of experience in restaurant and hospitality positions.

At KuruKuru, she leads marketing, branding and outreach efforts.

Quilt Guild prepares for major event The Thimble Pleasures Quilt Guild continues to prepare for its two-day biennial quilt which will be held on March 12 and 13, 2022. The event will take place at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School in Upton from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. each day. The show will showcase over 200 quilts designed and made by guild members. Also featured will be a silent auction, a boutique table, raffle baskets, and a raffle quilt.

Thimble Pleasures Quilt Guild was founded in 1992 and has a membership of 80 women from the local area.

One of the goals of the guild is to share their quilting gifts with those in need.

Over the years hundreds of lap quilts have been donated to the residents of these homes. In addition to lap quilts, members also make and donate kennel quilts, comfort quilts, chemo caps, and placemats to area residents & groups.

At age 7, he trained at the Heny Sison Culinary School (Manila, Philippines)

under Chef Jill Sandique (International ICE alumni and a graduate of the Institute of Culinary Education Pastry & Baking Arts program). Gino’s culinary experiences range from apprenticeship (The Ivy Restaurant, Boston), to Cooking Shows (Chef Heny Sison), to employments (Harvard Faculty Club, Cambridge; Pikaichi, Boston), to teaching Japanese cooking (Bay Path Adult Evening School, Charlton). He has traveled to Japan extensively and had enjoyed Ramen in Chiba, Kanagawa, Osaka, Kamikatsu, and Tokyo.

At Pikaichi in Boston, where he worked as a waiter then kitchen chef, he honed-in his passion for Ramen. He has over 10 years of experience running and managing Ramen restaurants in the Greater Boston Area. Gino leads menu creation, daily food prep and all other cooking related responsibilities at KuruKuru. He works with suppliers, ensures food quality in every meal, and assists with all back of house tasks and duties.

Chief Executive Officer Nick Pietroniro is a self-taught chef with a ton of passion for cooking. He began his journey in restaurants at the age of 15 working as a pizza chef. From there,

Lemire runs Marathon to support Doug Flutie Foundation Heather Lemire of Uxbridge ran the 2021 Boston Marathon as a member of Dougie’s Team supporting The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. Lemire raised money to help the Flutie Foundation continue to fund programs that help people and families affected by autism live life to the fullest.

The Flutie Foundation provides direct financial support to families to relieve the financial burden of caring for a loved one with autism, and collaborative grant making to autism-serving organizations. The Flutie Foundation works towards creating opportunities for people with autism to lead lives where they are included, respected and engaged in their communities.

Heather Lemire has worked full time for Dell for the past 21 years, and is also a group fitness instructor. She is very active, she owns a horse and rides 4-5 times per week, she loves to run and also teach spin and muscle conditioning classes at two gyms. Over the last 5 years Lemire has run the Marine Corps Marathon, Chicago Marathon, NYC Marathon, and the 2020 Virtual Boston Marathon for a variety of charitable organizations. Lemire is also currently deferred to run the Berlin Marathon in 2022.

Practical nursing students Marylee Panient of Woodstock Valley, CT and Martha Yeboah of Worcester, were voted as student representatives for the PN class of 2022. The student representatives are an important part of the Bay Path Practical Nursing Academy Faculty Organization (PNFO).

Their main responsibility is to be a link between Practical Nursing faculty, staff, and the students, and to contribute to Bay Path Practical Nursing Academy activities and projects.

Panient and Yeboah represented the students of PN Class of 2022 on the advisory board and steering committee meeting held September 29th.

Student representatives are responsible for attending the PNFO meetings, where they serve as non-voting members.

The student representatives speak on behalf of the student body and reports on topics they want to bring to the PNFO’s attention. The student representatives also invited to attend the spring Advisory Committee meetings scheduled for March 2022.

Panient is with the Town of Douglas Police Department (E911 Dispatcher Training) and the Harrington Memorial Hospital in Southbridge (ER Unit Secretary). She holds a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with minor on Forensic Studies. She is close to completing her Master of Science in Criminal Justice at Anna Maria College where she was active with the leadership program and the women’s basketball, and the peer mentor program. Yeboah is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the Meadows of Leicester (Rochdale, MA). Prior to joining Bay Path Practical Nursing Academy Yeboah was taking general studies at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, MA. Both Panient and Yeboah have a valid Health Care Provider/ Basic Life Support Provider CPR and are Dementia Care Certified.

Panient and Yeboah will bring student issues up, participate in governance, and focus on not just current students but may include alumni and possibly incoming students in conversations and activities.

whitin intermediate School Summer Readers Celebrate One might wonder how middle schoolers filled those long hot summer days? well, at whitin intermediate in uxbridge many students read many many books! Before school let out last June, students were challenged to read four or more books during the summer. The choice of what they read was theirs to make. The students chose books from suggested book lists that were created by students for students. Over two hundred seventy students met the goal set by the school. Over 1,100 books were read! school News Bolandrina elected coordinator of Filipino Student Assn. at BU Boston University sophomore at the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), Lilly Amber Bolandrina was elected as the co-production coordinator of the Boston University Filipino Student Association (BUFSA). She also serves as a volunteer Traditional Dance Choreographer. Bolandrina will serve a oneyear term during the 2021-22 academic year. BUFSA is an organization that advocates and celebrates the richness of Filipino heritage through community involvement and education. BUFSA aims to expand the core values of BU students, faculty, staff, and alumni through diversity, inclusivity, acceptance, embracing, and sharing Filipino culture.

Bolandrina is working towards a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Economics. With CAS Student Programs and Leadership, she serves as FY101 Peer Mentor. She graduated from Douglas High School, Class of 2020 where she was inducted to the National Honor Society and received the UniBank for Savings Scholarship and the Greater Worcester County Foundation/ Arno & Roberta Wagner Scholarship. Welcome to November and the start of the holiday season!

The senior center will carry on the annual Thanksgiving meal distribution. This year’s meal will be held on Monday, November 22nd. The lunch will be delivered to your homes between the hours of 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Lunch will consist of a hot turkey dinner with mashed potatoes, stuffing, vegetable and a roll, with gravy and cranberry sauce on the side along with a personal sized Table Talk Pie for dessert. We are accepting donations of small cans of cranberry sauce, gravy and monetary donations to the Center. The lunch is free and open to all seniors and the disabled.

Please call the Center if you would like a lunch delivered to your home or if you would like to donate or volunteer.

A big shout out to the Hannaford’s Pharmacy for sponsoring our Flu Shot Clinic last month. Over 50 seniors participated in this event. Thank you, Hannaford’s Pharmacy, for keeping our seniors safe.

Thank you to the Uxbridge Elderly Connection for coordinating our annual Golf Tournament! The Tournament was held on October 18th at the Whitinsville Golf Course. Mass Department of Mental Health and Open Sky Team Up on Pilot Projects crises in the emergency department, or inpatient units, who need assistance and support so they may return home and avoid future ER visits or hospitalizations. Emergency department “boarding” occurs when there is a delay in locating an inpatient bed due to high demand and limited availability.

This is a significant issue for patients as well as hospital emergency departments.

During the pilot, the team connected with 19 people and 84 percent of them did not return to the emergency department, indicating the team was able to refer people to services that met the individuals’ needs.

“This initiative, in conjunction with our psychiatric emergency services, has provided creative and flexible alternatives to existing types of support, and thus allowed many patients to avoid long waits in the emergency room and the need to return so often. This has made a significant difference for patients, their families, and the enormous demand on hospital resources,” said Greg Mirhej, vice president of behavioral health services at UMass Memorial-Harrington Hospital.

The project is expected to continue at UMass Memorial-Harrington and has now expanded to St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.

In the second pilot, 13 student families in the Worcester Public Schools who were experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity for the first time were referred for services. Families received comprehensive short-term stabilization services and an array of flexible clinical and supportive services including housing support, financial assistance, counseling and skills-teaching.

The two pilots include a mobile respite project to help reduce emergency department boarding at UMass Memorial-Harrington in Southbridge, and a flexible support project to support students experiencing homelessness in Worcester Public Schools and their families.

“Having the freedom, flexibility and funding to innovate can make a significant difference in the ability of providers to try new ways of tackling complex problems and improving the system of care,” said Ken Bates, President and CEO of Open Sky. “We were pleased to partner with the Department of Mental Health on these pilot projects, which demonstrated promising outcomes and which we hope to continue during the coming year.”

These pilots have demonstrated the power of collaboration and innovation in serving people who are experiencing behavioral health challenges, homelessness and other complex needs.

“Emergency room boarding and supporting the mental health needs of individuals experiencing homelessness and their families have long been priorities of the Department of Mental Health (DMH),” said Massachusetts DMH Commissioner Brooke Doyle. “We are happy to be a part of an expanded emergency room, mental health and homelessness response in which we hope will become a foundation for the future.”

WCC Tournament raises ERA Key’s Whitinsville donates $1,000 funds for renovations The Whitin Community Center’s UniBank Benefit Golf Tournament was held at the Thompson Raceway Golf Club. The weather was simply perfect and it made for a first class day out on the green to raise money for the Whitin Community Center’s Gymnasium Renovation Fund. The WCC was so fortunate for the participation and outpouring of support for this year’s tournament. Money raised from this tournament will directly benefit the WCC’s Gymnasium Fund, to help overhaul the nearly 100-year-old gym, which aims to increase bleacher seating, install a new floor, re-paint, and purchase new basketball hoops and nets, just to name a few! The WCC’s Gymnasium Project will help with these much-needed upgrades to benefit the entire community and bring back its radiance for generations to come to enjoy.

The tournament field this year enjoyed great food, fellowship, and friendly competition on a quintessential September day. The tournament was a Florida Style scramble with winners awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place overall based on number of teams and their individual team scores, and also 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for the Putting & Shootout contests. This tournament highlighted the $20,000 Gaudette Insurance Agency Hole-In-One Contest, the OMNI Control Technology, Inc. Putting Contest, and the Open Sky Community Services Shootout Contest.

Finally, there was also the ever-popular Riverdale Mills Corp. 50/50 Raffle.

The top three winning foursomes overall were awarded to: First Place, with a score of 58 to Team Hanover Insurance, Second Place, with a score of 60 to Team Steele, and a tie for Third Place, both with a score of 62 to Team Barnatt and Team Pinchuck. The top three winners for the OMNI Control Technology, Inc. Putting Contest awarded cash prizes were Bill Giannopoulos for First Place, Dick McGrath for Second Place, and Brian Steele for Third Place. The top three winners of the Open Sky Community Services Shootout Contest awarded cash prizes were Aaron Walker for First Place, George Guertin for Second Place, and Steve Benton for Third Place. While they did not have a winner for the $20,000 Gaudette Insurance Agency Hole-In-One Contest, everyone made a valiant effort. Congratulations to all of the winners!

The Whitinsville office of ERA Key Realty Services has donated $1,000 to benefit the family of Cameron McDonnell, a four-year-old Northbridge resident who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. September was National Childhood Cancer Awareness month.

The donation, made through the ERA Key Charitable Trust, will help the McDonnell family deal with the burden of treating this disease. “There is

absolutely nothing more devastating than childhood cancer,” said Realtor Laura Hebb, who lost her youngest son at age 13 to a rare form of liver cancer.

“It affects the entire family. Parents lose time from work, expenses escalate.

Traveling to Boston and practically living in Children’s Hospital creates stress that is unbelievable. We are happy to do what we can to help Cam, his parents, and two young sisters as they fight to defeat cancer.”

She added that one out of five children who are diagnosed with cancer do not survive. Other fundraisers are being planned to help the McDonnell family: • Erin Carmody, a close friend of Cameron’s mother, Jessey McDonnell, has started a GoFundMe campaign.

• The Upton Fire Department is collecting returnable cans and a portion of proceeds will be donated to the McDonnell family.

Over $190K gained for critical services The 32nd Annual Milford Regional Golf Classic, held on September 1st at the Franklin Country Club, is a significant fundraiser in support of critical hospital services and the Medical Center’s mission to provide the highest quality of care to the community with compassion, dignity and respect. This year’s event raised $194,225 with 140 golfers participating.

The continued success of the Golf Classic is due to the overwhelming support of the community, Golf Committee members, Milford Regional’s Healthcare Foundation board and volunteers.
