Second Annual Uniquely Uxbridge Day, Sept. 6th On Saturday, September 6th, Uxbridge will be celebrating its Second Annual Uniquely Uxbridge Day on the Town Common. This day is to enjoy all the things that make Uxbridge a great community to live in! Local businesses will be open, several landmarks and points of interest will offer tours and festivities will be going on at the Town Common and Downtown. The day will end with a town wide picnic and entertainment at Pout Pond.

Begin your day at 9:00 a.m. on the Town Common and commemorate Uxbridge in the First American Revolution. Boy Scout Troop 1122 will muster in the reenactment of the Uxbridge militia of September, 1774. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m, swing on by the Community House for the indoor yard sale, lots of treasures to be found! Stroll around the Town Common and check out the Raffles from local businesses, vendors, artisans and crafters showing their goods along with face painting, balloon animals for the kids and more. Starting at 11 a.m. come down and taste some great homemade chili from many of our residents and vote for your favorite.

Also downtown there will be a scarecrow contest. Residents, community groups and local businesses will be decorating their own scarecrow and you get to vote for your favorite. Stroll around

town and patronize the local businesses that are employing our neighbors!

Did you know Uxbridge has an Antique Fire Truck Museum in town? This and other points of interest are generously opening their doors on this special day. Find the complete list and times at the event page of “We are Uniquely Uxbridge” Facebook group. Print off the list and drive around to visit something new.

At 3:00 p.m. head down to Pout Pond for a Town Picnic, bring your own food, or enjoy refreshments from local vendors such as Uxbridge First Holiday Night, Sweet Wise Ice Cream and Sara’s Sweet’s Cupcakes.

Relax by the pond and enjoy live entertainment from the band Mindrift, participate in a game of Ultimate Frisbee, or take in a game of Cornhole with the kids.

The winners of the Chili Cook Off, Scarecrow Contest and Raffles will also be announced at the picnic. Uxbridge is a great town with many fantastic businesses, people, and places to visit!

Scam warning from U.P.D Scam Warning to all Uxbridge residents. For some time now scamming organizations have been targeting Uxbridge residents and businesses by calling and identifying themselves as National Grid or the IRS. They claim they are owed money and say your services will be terminated and or you'll be arrested by an agent if you don't pay.

They instruct you to go to a store and purchase Pay Pal Green Dot Money Pak cards in various amounts. They then call back and only request the numbers off the cards that were purchased. It seems they have means to make their own cards

by the information they are given off of the cards.

Remember this is a scam!!! National Grid, other service providers and the IRS will not conduct business in this manner. They are also using a spoof cell phone program. They can actually change the number that shows up on your caller ID to reflect National Grid, the IRS or another service provider’s actual phone number. Simply hang up if/when you get one of these calls and then report it to the Uxbridge Police Department and follow up with the calling agencies customer service number located on your bill.

Adam is raising money for the Jimmy Fund & Dana Farber Cancer Institute that will be used for patients with cancer so they may receive treatment. Money raised is also used by Doctor's to research new treatments & hopefully find a cure for cancer. The funds raised through the Walk enable leaders at DanaFarber Cancer Institute to apply monies rapidly when promising new research opportunities arise. Your gift enhances the programs and initiatives that serve patients and their families who come to Dana-Farber.

Kuros offers recap of what recently signed budget items mean locally Dear Editor; As I write this, formal sessions for the 2013-2014 legislative session have ended. In election years the Legislature concludes formal sessions on July 31st, recessing, except in cases of emergency, until January of the following year. I wanted to provide a brief update on some budget items we were able to successfully advocate for in the budget that was recently signed by Governor Patrick.

The budget that is adopted each year includes two main components: budgetary matters and legislative matters that are contained in "outside sections".

I'd first like to briefly discuss two outside sections which I proposed that were adopted in the budget. Both are related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) otherwise known as Obamacare.

Due to the complexity of the ACA, a new job position called a "Navigator" has arisen. ACA Navigators help people understand their health care coverage options and assist them with the enrollment process. People share personal information such as social security numbers, income and asset information and other information with ACA Navigators. This type of information in the wrong hands could lead to fraud and/or identity theft. A study in California found dozens of convicted felons who were working as ACA Navigators, including several who were convicted of embezzlement charges. Imagine the damage an unscrupulous navigator can do with your or your loved ones' personal information! Faced with this possibility, I offered and had adopted an outside section that will require Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) checks for ACA Navigators, making Massachusetts the 17th state to offer such protections to its citizens.

A second outside section I authored that was adopted also involves the ACA. Since the implementation of the ACA, a new 2.3% tax is levied on medical device manufacturers for the products they produce, to help fund the ACA. This has a negative impact on an industry that is very important to Massachusetts. The Commonwealth's Medical Device Manufacturing industry is the 3rd largest in the country, employing approximately 100,000 people either directly or indirectly, and accounting for 14% of all products shipped from Massachusetts. The outside section I authored creates a commission to explore offering a tax credit or incentives to medical device companies to encourage further expansion of the industry in the Commonwealth. It is my hope that if a credit is found to be financially viable and implemented, that MA will become an even greater magnet for these high-paying jobs!

In regards to budgetary items, we were able to find a creative solution to what I feel was an unnecessary problem. In the Spring, the legislature adopted a “Local Aid Resolution” which provided a baseline commitment of local aid to cities and towns long

before the budget process was complete. This resolution committed to a modest increase in local aid. The objective in prior years when local aid resolutions were passed, was to give the towns a “floor” number that they can plan around for their Spring town meeting budget approvals, but with the understanding that if the revenue picture improved by the time the budget was finalized, that the numbers from the local aid resolution could be increased in the final budget.

However, this year was different.

This year, the budget order (the rules by which we must play when crafting the budget) included an unprecedented cap on Unrestricted Local Aid and Chapter 70 (school) Aid. Essentially any amendments that attempted to increase either of these critically important line items above the amount that was proposed by the House Ways

& Means Committee would be ruled out of order. As a former selectman, my top budget priority has always been advocating for local aid. Faced with a political roadblock for the two largest local aid line items, I sought and found a work-around to the problem. I introduced over 10 amendments to increase other local aid items that were not specifically limited by the budget order to the Ways & Means proposal.

I am pleased to report that the final budget included increases to five of those line items I offered amendments for: public libraries, regional school transportation, veteran's services, fire services, and SMART Growth reimbursement. While not every community benefits from every line item, I felt it was important to return as much money as possible to the cities and towns of the Commonwealth. Of particular note to our neighboring towns of Blackstone

Town News Mr. Friend upbeat on final phase of construction in Sutton Story & Photo By Constance Dwyer Despite all the troubles facing Theodore “Ted” Friend , Superintendent of the Sutton School System, Early Learning Center, Elementary, Middle and High School, as a result of selection of the wrong original contractor for the structural upgrades of the system, Mr. Friend is upbeat about the progress of the new contractor, Brait Builders.

During the interview in his temporary office in the Elementary School, he noted that the seniors will have gone through the upheaval of construction woes and delays of the past four years.

They, Mr. Friend assures, will have the reward of graduating, at last, from a new high school. He noted, “It was quite an experience for them, but they

handled it well. Completion of the new high school is contemplated between February-April, 2015.”

Currently, high school students attend classes in the new Middle School while Middle School students go to their classes in a modular structures. When the high school students move out of the new Middle School, Middle School students will take their seats in the new Middle School..

Staff is expected back on August 25th when an “opening ceremony” will take place inside the new auditorium which has capacity to seat 500. “The auditorium is being finished as we speak,” Mr. Friend said with a smile. Students return on August 27th.

The new contractor, Brait Builders, the Superintendent was pleased to observe, is pro-active and “one of the owners, Mike, is on-site every day. His brother,

Bob is here every Tuesday for construction meetings. They are hands-on and aggressive.” He added that the builders want “to finish ASAP for the community.”

Admitting that “It was (initially) a frustrating project for someone in my position because one has so little control,” he was pleased to now report that the new facilities are being completed in the way intended. “We will have a

beautiful campus,” the cool, calm, and collected Superintendent noted.

Mr. Friend also added that “The Town of Sutton was very supportive and it increased financial support the last couple of years, but we’re still not out of the woods.” He wisely pointed out that “very few public school systems” have the local aid needed and the “struggle” has continued over these past 8 years.

He is encouraged, however, that more monies for schools will become available in Sutton because the future commercial construction along Rte 146 will be generating needed tax revenues. He anticipates that there will be an “increase in the number of students” in the Sutton School district as well.

“Eventually,” he concluded, “we’ll be on an upswing and be able to hire more teachers (to make up for) the 22 teachers we lost over the past 4 years.”

The interview ended with an attempt to see his new office in the Elementary School, but, because the floor was being stripped it was not possible However, this afforded time and opportunity to see some cheerful, creative, hand-painted walls done by a parent; renditions of Mary Poppins and Dr Seuss among others.

The Sutton School District enrolls the following number of students: Early Learning Center #400; Elementary #400; Middle School #460; High School #400; Mr. Friend has been Superintendent of The Sutton School System for 4 years.

Scouts achieve the Girl Scout Silver Award The Girl Scout Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouting.

An award with national standards, it acknowledges a young woman’s completion of a series of leadership challenges and extensive service to the community. The Silver Award project focuses on a local community issue and allows girls, individually or working in small teams, to develop their personal leadership skills, explore careers, com-

mit to their own self-improvement and make a positive impact on the world.

The accomplishments of each Silver Award recipient reflect leadership and citizenship skills that set her apart from her peers and identify her as a community leader.

library for people who attend dinners at the Peace of Bread. Once the financial goal was met, they collaborated with Uxbridge High School to build it.

Families can now come to the library and check out books to take home with them. Volunteers from Alternatives are available to read books to the children during dinnertime. This collaboration between all the parties taught children reading skills and also helped them understand and learn more about people with disabilities.

Meighan Casey of Troop 11127 was also a Silver Award Recipient with her project being Blankets for Love. She addressed the root issue of dogs in shelters needing to be comforted. This project taught Meighan responsibility, sticking to a commitment, and also sewing skills.

BVC Chorus holds Open Call Calling all singers! The Blackstone Valley Community Chorus (BVCC) is holding an Open Call for all new and returning members for its 2014 fall and winter season. Open Call will take place on Sunday, September 7th at 6:00 pm in the Douglas Municipal Center Resource Room at 29 Depot Street, Douglas.

The BVCC, under the direction of Diane Pollard of Uxbridge, has been bringing choral music to the Blackstone Valley since 2004. The chorus welcomes singers of various ages and music abilities; the only prerequisite is the ability to carry a tune. Rehearsals will be on Sundays, beginning September 14th, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Douglas Municipal Center Resource Room. There is a $30 membership fee to cover minimal concert expenses and all sheet music. Please come to Open Call ready to sing and with your membership fee so you can receive your music right away!

This season the chorus will prepare Mozart’s Requiem for a concert on November 21st at St. Patrick's Church

Divorce Support Group begins new session The DivorceCare Recovery Support Group begins a new weekly session on Tuesday, September 9. This program is for men and women struggling through separation and divorce. The program offers support from knowledgeable leaders and interaction with others going through the same experiences.

Each meeting includes time for making some new friends, refreshments, and a video, followed by small group discussion. Weekly topics include What’s Happening to Me, Facing Your Anger, Depression, Financial Survival, Loneliness, and KidCare.

The DivorceCare program is free,

non-denominational, and open to all.

Uxbridge DAR participates in reenactment The Captain Job Knapp Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will participate in the Revolution of 1774 that is being held in Worcester on September 7th in Institute Park. The all-day event is to commemorate the day in 1774 when the Prudential Government took over the Court Houses in Worcester.

On September 6, 1774, 4,622 militiamen from 37 town across the Worcester County – half the adult male population of the entire county – lined both sides of Main Street as two dozen court officials walked the gauntlet between them, hats in hand, reciting their recantations thirty times each so all the militiamen could hear.

From that day onward, no British authority was ever exerted in Worcester County.

There will be many events in several different locations including the Antiquarian Society, the Salisbury Mansion, The Oaks, and the Worcester Historical Society. It is planned as a fun celebration for the whole family with music, food, costumes, and reenactments.

The DAR is the largest woman’s service organization in the world. The Captain Job Knapp Chapter is located in the Blackstone Valley and is open to anyone who can trace their Ancestry back to the Revolutionary War. New members are always welcome.

Quaker Meeting House to host Ecumenical Service Dine-Out Fundraiser at The Roast House On Sunday, September 14th, the Fall/Winter season of ecumenical services will begin at the historic Meeting House at 197 Elm Street in Blackstone.

Reverend Howard De Vries, Pastor of Congregational Life at Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church in Whitinsville will serve as guest pastor.

This is the second in a series of ecumenical services being sponsored by the East Blackstone Quaker Meeting House & Cemetery Historical Association, Inc. The service will commence at 2 p.m.

Rev. De Vries has degrees from Barrington College (B.A. Bible & Biology), Westminster Theological Seminary (Pastoral Studies), and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (M.Div. Pastoral Ministry), and is a member of the National Association of Christian Counselors. As Pastor of Congregational Life, Rev. De Vries provides pastoral and professional leadership to Pleasant Street's care ministries,

including the Divorce Care and Celebrate Recovery ministries. In addition, he guides and supports the work of GriefShare and the Shepherding Team.

Music for the service will be under the direction of John Staples of Blackstone.

Special musical selections will be performed.

DivorceCare for Kids support group begins DivorceCare for Kids is a support group for kids who are angry, hurt, and confused by their parent’s divorce.

DivorceCare for Kids provides a safe, fun place where children will learn to understand their feelings, express their emotions appropriately, and heal from their pain and confusion.

Each group session is filled with motivating and exciting activities, games, crafts, role playing, discussion times, journaling and activity books, to help children process the divorce and move forward in their lives.

Remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over uxbridge Police launch intensive Crackdown on impaired Driving The Uxbridge Police Department today announced it will join over 148 other law enforcement agencies statewide in support of an intensive crackdown on impaired driving from August 13 to September 1 as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization, funded by a federal grant administered through the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Highway Safety Division (EOPSS-HSD).

Impaired driving is one of America’s most often committed and deadliest crimes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that in 2012 in Massachusetts, 123 people were killed in crashes that involved drivers with a blood alcohol content level of .08 or higher.

NHTSA also reports that on average, there is one alcohol impaired driving fatality every 51 minutes across America. The number of drivers oper-

“All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life. Because we’re committed to highway safety, we are intensifying enforcement during the crackdown. Twice as many alcoholimpaired crashes occur over the weekend and four times as many occur at night, so we will be especially vigilant during these high-risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads,” said Chief Jeffrey Lourie.

The Uxbridge Police Department’s officers will be aggressively looking for all impaired drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone they find driving while impaired — regardless of age, vehicle type, or time of day.

“Our message is simple and unwavering: if we find you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions,” said

Chief Jeffrey Lourie. “Even if you beat the odds and manage to walk away from an impaired-driving crash alive, the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can still destroy your life.”

According to the Registry of Motor Vehicles, violators often face jail time, lose their driver’s licenses, and are sentenced to use ignition interlocks. Their insurance rates go up. Other financial hits include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job or job prospects. All told, a first offense can easily cost thousands of dollars. Driving impaired is simply not worth the consequences. Remember, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

PAWS Act will prevent animal cruelty and promote public safety our thanks to Senator Tarr and all of the bill's supporters who championed these reforms," said Kara Holmquist, director of advocacy for the MSPCA-Angell.

"Animal lovers around the state can today celebrate these efforts and hopefully can find some peace knowing that from such tragic incidents, like Puppy Doe and others, awareness has been generated that will now prevent harm to other helpless animals."

The Senate had initially approved the PAWS Act by a vote of 40-0 on July 31, the last day of formal sessions. Sen. Moore was among the legislators who called for action on the legislation before the end of formal sessions. The House subsequently adopted some minor technical amendments before passing the bill on a voice vote.

Sen. Moore is a long standing supporter of strengthened animal abuse laws. He previously sponsored an updated law making animal abuse a felony, Chapter 319 of the Acts of 2004. That bill was filed following the killing of a family dog, found in the woods in a plastic garbage bag in Douglas in 2004.

The updated PAWS Act legislation now heads to Governor Patrick's desk for his signature.

Doggone Run to save pets’ lives Frankie’s Friends charitable pet foundation is hosting a virtual 5k in September with the goal of putting thousands of runners on the road across America – and here in Massachusetts–to raise funds to help sick and injured pets whose families cannot afford the cost of lifesaving emergency or specialty care.

All funds raised by Massachusetts participants will be used to help save the lives of pets whose families are located here in the state.

Up until the weekend of Sept. 5-7, Frankie’s Friends Doggone Run participants from Massachusetts have the opportunity to register, create their own fundraising campaign – as a team or as individuals raising funds leading up to the event weekend – and finishing with their own 5k – anywhere, in any manner (run, jog, walk, bike or skip), anytime during the designated race weekend. “The Greater Tuna” to be performed Steps Theatre (a division of Steps Off Broadway) will be performing “The Greater Tuna” for only 6 performances. BBB offers Safety Tips for finding the perfect dog The Better Business Bureau is warning dog lovers to be cautious when responding to online or newspaper classifieds. Scammers posing as a breeder or dog owner will place an ad offering inexpensive puppies.

Communicating solely through emails, the scammer may also claim they are moving to a foreign country and need to "re-home" the puppies.

Consumers may be taken in by the sincerity of the scammers. The con-artist may say they don't care about money and just want to find a good home for their beloved pup.

Then, the scammers will ask for fees to cover shipping or re-homing the pet. These scammers may also try to take advantage of the buyer's identity by probing for personal information like your birthday, address and phone number - all while masking it as "getting to know who's buying their puppy."

Often, sellers will request a wire transfer or prepaid debit card for payment. These are red flags that should be avoided, or you may end up without your money, as well as the puppy.

BBB offers the following advice when searching online for a new pet: Do your research. Search for a reputable breeder and always ask for references. Check out bbb.org/boston for reviews from previous customers, information on advertising issues and other important details. All too often, unsuspecting people purchase puppies from puppy mills, which result in temperament or health issues down the line.

Visit the breeder first. It is essential to visit the breeder at their home to see the entire litter, the care and conditions given to the puppies, and the puppy’s parents prior to purchasing. This will allow you to see if the environment is clean and healthy for the puppies, as well as the temperament and quality of the older dogs.

Beware of breeders who seem overly concerned with getting paid. Any reputable breeder will be far more concerned with the appropriateness of the potential pet home than what and when they are getting paid. Make sure you have clear expectations - ideally in writing - of how and when the puppy will be paid for. Be especially wary of any breeder who insists you wire money or pay with a prepaid debit card.

Don't be fooled by a slick website. Dishonest breeders and even outright scams can be represented by professional-looking websites that lure you in with fraudulent pictures of adorable puppies. Anyone who has experienced a dog-related scam should report it to

Local film honored with a Red Carpet Premiere While movies are showcased in Hollywood on a regular basis, films like FOOTPRINTS rarely gain such recognition. You see, even though FOOTPRINTS was filmed with a cast and crew of over 540 people across 15 cities and towns throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island, it was done without any money. Which in the entertainment industry, is a miracle all by itself.

Unable to raise the needed funds, the producers decided to go ahead anyway and make this film on faith instead. As Jim Huggins, the film’s director, coproducer, and co-writer and a Whitinsville resident noted, “It seemed only appropriate to step out in faith ourselves as FOOTPRINTS is a story inspired by the true events of one man’s journey of faith in his own life.”

“It was an honor to have our film premiered in Los Angeles,” Huggins said.

“To us it simply underscores the power of a good story…they have a way of getting out and getting told.”

In addition to the Red Carpet event,

Huggins, an award-winning actor, filmmaker, writer, and speaker was asked to participate on a director’s panel alongside other industry professionals from Hollywood to teach and inspire an upcoming generation to produce faith and family content. “The most common question I was asked was ‘why do you think faith-based entertainment is needed in Hollywood?’” Huggins said.

His answer was simple. “Society is a reflection of the stories it’s told, of the entertainment it chooses to read and watch. So ask yourself, are you happy with how society is going these days?

If not, try telling different stories.”

Celebrate America with the DAR A national theme of the Daughters of the American Revolution is to “Celebrate America” through contributing millions of volunteer hours to meet a variety of needs in towns nationwide. The Deborah Wheelock Chapter in Uxbridge will contribute by opening its historic Simeon Wheelock House on special occasions, supporting military and veterans groups, reading at the Taft Elementary School, and welcoming new citizens at several Naturalization ceremonies.

On Saturday, Sept. 6th, the Simeon Wheelock House on North Main Street will open its doors from 9 AM to 12 Noon as part of a “Uniquely Uxbridge Day” celebration. Members will tell tales of the house’s history and describe the interesting artifacts on display- a fun, educational ‘tour’ for all ages.

An interesting series of Chapter meetings and speakers are planned from September through April. By varying meetings from Friday evenings to Sunday afternoons, we aim to invite more women, interested in genealogy, historic preservation, community service, education and promoting patriotism, to attend our events.

This year’s opening meeting date is especially meaningful in history. The Deborah Wheelock Chapter will meet on Friday, Sept. 12th from 5:30-7 PM at the Simeon Wheelock House, the 200th anniversary of the writing of the Star Spangled Banner.

During the British bombardment of Ft. McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, a critical battle (1814) during the War of 1812, Frances Scott Key feared the huge red, white and blue flag would not survive the night of Sept.

Blackstone Valley Plein Air competition announced This September, 34 artists from around New England, New York and the Midwest will be taking part in the 2nd Annual Blackstone Valley Plein Air Competition and Festival. The paintings produced over the weekend will be judged by noted Rockport artist and gallery owner, T. M. Nicholas. Plein Air is a French term for painting outdoors. Many artists believe that it is the only way to truly capture the light of a landscape. Gerard Blouin, who will be painting at the Festival, says “you have to work outside in order to capture the

The Blackstone Valley, with its mixture of farms, open landscapes and 19th century mills, has been a prime area for noted Plein Air artists like the late Bernard Corey. “The 34 artists taking part were juried into the competition,” says Tom Saupe, director of community outreach for Alternatives, “They are coming in from as far away as Indiana and as near as Uxbridge. For many of them, this will be their first time in the area.”

Shaw Farm in Sutton by Millbury artist Michael Graves. the 28th the artists will be painting at various historic and scenic locations in and around Northbridge, Uxbridge and Sutton. Maps of where the artists are painting will be available at Alternatives Whitin Mill. On the afternoon of Sunday the 28th they will all be painting in the same location during what’s known as a “Quick-Draw” Competition where they must produce a painting in just three hours. Sunday will draw to a close with a reception for the artists, to which the public is invited.

On Sunday all paintings will be judged and winner will be announced.

The paintings will be on display in the Aldrich Heritage Gallery during the following week. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., evenings by appointment.

The Paintings will then be auctioned on Sunday, October 5th, in the Singh Performance Center. The auction will be preceded by a reception at 4:00 PM. The auction will begin at 5:30 PM. Moore is focused on needs of youths Dear Registered Voters, I am writing today in support of Senator Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge. As a recent college graduate, it is refreshing to see how Senator Moore not only listens to, but more importantly, implements policies and changes to ensure that the needs of his young constituents are met. It is apparent that Senator Moore cares about the future of the young adults in our district.

Through sponsoring a generous grant at the state level, he secured $50,000 to support the Milford Youth Center. In addition, Senator Moore is a major advocate of Advanced Place-ment programs in local high schools.

Specifically, he not only sees the value of challenging students with rigorous courses, but he also understands that credits earned prior to entering college can help ease the financial burden that many families face as a result of rising tuition bills. As a mathematics teacher at a local high school, I find comfort in knowing that one of our primary state leaders values the importance of advancing curricula and college accessibility. Abigail Karns of Whitinsville participated in the WPI program. engineering at WPI, who led the laboratory component of the program and is the principal investigator for the REU grant. “This is the second year of the program, and I think it’s really proven to be a success. The students were engaged and enthusiastic, and that’s the whole idea.”

During the week, mornings were spent in the lab with projects that included studying the structure of DNA, bacterial replication, designing and fabricating prosthetics, and exploring the cardiovascular system. In the afternoons, the students learned about innovation, entrepreneurship, and creative thinking, and participated in exercises to boost their poise, confidence, and ability to communicate to groups.

“By pushing them beyond their comfort zones and opening their minds

about the wonders of science, engineering, and how they could make a difference in the world, we help the girls discover what they’re really capable of,” said Helen G. Vassallo, PhD, professor of management in WPI's Robert A. Foisie School of Business, who directs the innovation module of the program.

This year's participants, all from Central Massachusetts, were Delaney Rose of Millville, Karen Hou of Shrewsbury, Jaime Cook of Wayland, Mikaela Rivera of Webster, Abigail Karns of Whitinsville, and Esther Konadu, Rebecca Perno, Angela Rusha, Arianna Stratman, and Amoret Zamarro of Worcester. They were selected from more than 120 applicants from middle schools in the region. To be considered, applicants were required to submit a letter of recommendation

from either a science or mathematics teacher and write an essay about why they wanted to explore bioengineering.

“We had an outstanding group of applicants this year, and it was very challenging to choose just ten girls,” said Kristin Goppel, associate director of summer programs at WPI who administered the program. “We are already looking forward to next year.”

funding for cultural activities

The Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) has awarded grants totaling $76,610 to cultural organizations across the Worcester and Norfolk district, announced Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge.

"MCC grants help to ensure that unique cultural programs continue to thrive and benefit our citizens today and for years to come," stated Sen. Moore. "Beyond that, they promote tourism which in turn spurs economic activity. Overall, the increased funding for these grants is yet another tangible benefit of the recent state budget to the communities of our region, and another reason why I was happy to support it."

Sen. Moore said MCC grants support a wide variety of cultural activities and projects that benefit local residents, while supporting jobs in the nonprofit cultural sector. The announcement was made as part of MCC's statewide funding program, which benefits from a $1 million increase to its state appropriation approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor in July.

Local grant recipients include: • Bellingham Cultural Council, $4,810; • Blackstone Cultural Council, $4,300; • Douglas Cultural Council, $4,300; • Dudley Cultural Council, $4,380; • Hopedale Cultural Council, $4,300; • Mendon Cultural Council, $4,300; • Milford Cultural Council, $8,660; • Millville Cultural Council, $4,300;

The grants are part of MCC's $10.3 million statewide investment in the nonprofit cultural sector.

MCC's 329 Local Cultural Councils make up the most extensive public cultural funding network in the nation.

They provide funding to every Massachusetts city and town through the work of more than 2,300 volunteers. The councils support local arts and history, fund school field trips, and sponsor local concerts and exhibitions.

Grants to local councils are awarded according to a formula that reflects the state's local aid system.

The MCC is a state agency supporting the arts, sciences, and humanities, to improve the quality of life in Massachusetts and its communities. It pursues its mission through a combination of grants, services, and advocacy for nonprofit cultural organizations, schools, communities, and artists. Coffee Break, a non-denominational community Bible study for women, will begin its Fall season with a study of I and II Corinthians on Thursday, September 11th, at Fairlawn Church. The letters to the Church at Corinth are filled with encouragement. The Corinthians wondered about where they stood with God…in life and in death, and about whether they'd been forgotten in their times of suffering. They wondered if their lives were pleasing to God, and if Jesus was really coming again.

Refreshments and quality child care are provided, with a loving nursery for infants up to age 2 and a story hour that your 3- to 5-year olds won’t want to miss!

Coffee Break is held each Thursday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. and offers women in the Blackstone Valley an opportunity to read and discuss the Bible, share questions and concerns, and develop new friendships. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”) for 8.5 years where he investigated broker-dealers for compliance with federal securities laws and FINRA rules and regulations. This included both routine as well as special investigations involving the review and discovery of money laundering, fraud, embezzlement, insider trading and unsuitable investments. One investigation of which he was the team lead resulted in the discovery of fraud and misrepresentation at a firm located in Braintree, MA. Craig drafted a referral whereby the U.S. Securities and

Exchange Commission became engaged along with the FBI. The firm’s owner was detained October 2, 2012 and sentenced in April 2013 to 17 years in federal prison plus 3 years supervised probation and $9 million in restitution. Craig left FINRA in 2013 to start a consulting business focused on helping small broker-dealers.

Craig earned his B.A. from Roanoke College, where he double majored in International Relations and Business, and an M.S. in Finance from Suffolk University in Boston.

Blackstone Valley Art Assn. announces upcoming calendar Once again the Blackstone Valley Art Association, has planned a busy and exciting year. The meeting theme is drawing, with hands on demos for basic, portrait, and Zentangle. We will again feature January as our photography month with our 3rd show at Alternatives in Uxbridge as well as a workshop during that month, topic to be determined. Our first show scheduled is-- Hopedale Day In The Park, September 6th 10-3. We will have a vendor tent with hands on activities, art for sale as well as info and membership forms. September 27th-28th we will be at River Bend Farm in the visitors center conference room with an art show and sale featuring" Art of the Three Rivers- Mumford, West and Blackstone". The show will be open from 113 each day with light refreshments.

Secondly we will be participating in Hopedale's Octoberfest October 4th.

There will also be an artist reception for this show on, October 2nd from 68 with wine and hors d'oeuvres. Our hosts will be Atria Draper Place, 25 Hopedale St. Hopedale. On February 14th we will have our 3rd Chocol'art show at the Whitinsville Public Library. Our Spring show is yet to be

scheduled. We will have an introduction to Wee Gee's photography on October 21st by Bob Evans with a night time photo shoot in Salem Ma. on October 25th. Also on the 21st Al Weems will introduce" Providence and Rhode Island Chef's Table" a cookbook photo project that he worked on. He will discuss methods of food photography. Novem-ber 1st we will visit the Worcester Art Museum, free admission from 10-12. A holiday celebration will be held in December for our members.

A late April Field trip to Nantucket Daffodil Festival or Blithewood Mansion's Daffodil festival as well as a trip through Colt State Park to see, photograph or paint all the flowering trees. May is for our elections and pot luck supper, which is not to be missed.

Pop up field trips also occur. We have a permanent gallery at the Milford Local Tv station on138 S. MAIN St..

This show changes out every 2 months with a new themed show. September and October will be Fall Scenes and still lifes. Don Iacovelli, will be the Featured Milford Artist.

Grafton’s Shakespeare Club begins new season This year marks the 26th season of the Shakespeare Club of Grafton, a group dedicated to the reading and studying of the Bard’s works. Its KickOff Meeting will be held on Monday, September 8, at 7:30 pm at the Brigham Hill Community Barn on Wheeler Road in North Grafton. Anyone interested is encouraged to come to this first meeting of the season, meet its members and look into its activities.

The Shakespeare Club of Grafton meets twice each month, usually the

second and fourth Monday at 7:30 pm., from September to May. However, there is a schedule provided which includes special celebrations and winter meetings which are held on Sunday afternoons. Each year three or four plays are selected to read aloud and discuss with a “producer” taking the lead in facilitating the reading and discussion and supplying supplemental information. Valley Tech welcomed the largest freshmen class in the school's history. In recent years, space constraints have limited new seats at Valley Tech to 300 spots, despite an annual applicant pool of more than 800 area eighth graders.

This year, in anticipation of a program expansion, the number of incoming freshmen was slightly increased to 310 new students.

The record-setting classmates were introduced to their new school during the Freshmen Barbecue, which is held every year as a fun and stress-free way for new students and families to kick off the school year. In addition to a hot meal and a warm welcome, parents and guardians were given the chance to fill out paper work, sign permission forms, and study the school year's bus sched-

Lung Assn. offers Back to School Tips for parents of children with Asthma With summer winding down, families here in Massachusetts and across the nation are beginning to prepare for the new school year. A new school environment can sometimes be difficult for children with asthma. This back-toschool season, the American Lung Association of the Northeast highlights tips for families of children with asthma and stresses the importance of crafting a plan to properly manage asthma in a school environment.

“Asthma is a serious chronic disease that affects millions of children,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “Asthma symptoms can often be exacerbated at this time of year and it is important for parents to work with their healthcare provider and school personnel prior to the first day of school on controlling their child’s asthma. We must do all that we can to prevent asthma attacks and missed school days.”

Affecting close to seven million children under the age of 18, including an estimated 144,599 children in Massachusetts, asthma is one of the most

common chronic childhood disorders in the nation. It is also one of the primary illness-related reasons that students miss school, accounting for more than 10 million lost school days each year.

Asthma is the third-leading cause of hospitalization for children under 15. In 2011, one-third of people with asthma experienced at least one episode, or attack—with children 39 percent more likely than adults to have an asthma episode.

The onset of a new school year also marks the beginning of the cold and flu season. Influenza poses a special health risk to children with asthma, as these children often experience more severe symptoms. The American Lung Association strongly recommends that all children - especially those with asthma - be immunized against influenza.

“Flu epidemics typically start and spread in schools,” said Norman Edelman, M.D. Chief Medical Officer of the American Lung Association.

“We highly recommend that children with asthma get a flu shot as soon as it is available, as the flu can trigger a serious asthma attack.”

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), yearly flu vaccinations will begin in September, or as soon as the vaccine becomes available.

In preparation for the school year ahead, the American Lung Association urges parents who have children with asthma to complete the following checklist: Step 1 – Learn about asthma Learning about asthma is easy. The American Lung Association has many free resources to help you, your child and their caregivers learn how to keep asthma in good control. Well controlled asthma is the key to helping your child stay healthy and active.

Step 2 – Talk to the school nurse A visit or phone call to the school nurse should be your next step. Together, you

and the school nurse along with your child’s health care provider can work to reduce asthma triggers and manage symptoms while in school.

Ask the school nurse to explain and provide all of the required forms you and your child’s health care provider need to sign and complete. Discuss your child’s asthma triggers and steps to reduce them in the classroom.

Ask about the school’s asthma emergency plan, and if coaches, teachers and staff are trained in how to recognize asthma symptoms and respond to a breathing emergency.

It’s important that your child has an updated asthma action plan on file at school and one at home and has been trained to use the prescribed medicines and devices. Visit how to make your medical visits more satisfying to find helpful hints on how to talk to your child’s health care provider.

If your child uses a spacer or valvedholding chamber or a peak flow meter, ask your healthcare provider for a prescription for two; one can be kept at home and one at school. A peak flow meter at school will help the school nurse assess your child’s symptoms.

Great fun at Vacation Bible School Oh, what fun we had! The 120 children who attended the ecumenical Vacation Bible School July 14-18 at the Village Congregational Church enjoyed their experiences. The VBS program included Science experiments for the first time, plus the traditional singing, crafts, worship, Bible activities, sacred dance, bells, recreation, refreshments and outreach projects.

We were blessed by the dedication of our 81 volunteers, both adults and youth. In addition to helping with the VBS program at the church, many of the volunteers helped with the afternoon swimming at the Whitin Community Center.

Over 600 food items were donated to the NAC Food Pantry and $372.42 was donated to Lily's Pad to provide new toys for children receiving chemotherapy at the UMass Medical School.

The VBS staff would like to thank everyone who donated or participated in any way to make the week a fun and meaningful adventure for the children.

We pray that God will continue to bless the children and VBS volunteers.

Digger’s has variety and outstanding customer service Photo & Story by Constance Dwyer A family-owned business in Douglas, Digger’s has an outstanding track record in its beer, wine and liquor selections, coupled with extraordinary customer service. The owners of this small, neat package store are William, “Bill,” and Lisa Lavallee of Grafton, Lisa’s parents, Nancy and Norman Maranda of Northbridge and their son Norm, Jr., a former Northbridge resident.

Why did this family come together and buy Digger’s from its previous Douglas owners, Bob and Deb Dansereau? Well, it all kind of happened when Bill approached Lisa’s Dad to ask if he might consider buying a liquor store when he retired. Norman who had been a Superintendent for R.H. White in Auburn for 40 years, thought about it; interesting enough, Mr. Dansereau’s son, Craig, worked with Norman and brought up that his father was thinking of selling his liquor business. Norman in his credentials was proud to share that he is also a veteran, having retired from the Air Force after being stationed in VietNam. Recovering from a stroke 4 years ago, his wife, Nancy, said that sometimes when he gets tired he “loses his voice, but the customers are so supportive and glad that he’s working at the store.”

It was exactly 8 years ago last month that the friendly acquisition took place and business is going very well. Bill put it succinctly: “The Town of Douglas is loyal to us and they are our customers. Competition in this industry is tough but we like what we’re doing and we put a lot of effort into it. For a small store, we pride ourselves in our large variety.” His wife, Lisa, echoed a similar feeling in sharing that “Douglas is a great, small town and we are so proud to own our business here.”

On the evening of the interview, it was Lisa’s parent’s turn to be at the store from 6 to 10 p.m. As this reporter was coming through the door, employee Paula Richard of Douglas, was leaving, but was happy to share that in her three years working at Digger’s, “I get positive feedback about the good variety of beers and wines. We are friendly and even enjoy customers’ hugs.”

Another customer, Chris Perry, also of Douglas, who was sporting his Firestone badge from having left his workplace at the Warwick Mall, was more than happy to offer his comments: “I’m very happy here. When I moved here, I asked for a certain product and they were able to get it. Everyone is so pleasant.” As I left the store, another customer, on crutches, Ryan Kuindersma, another Douglas resident, entered

and Nancy teased him by saying, “You need to buy something small because you can’t handle anything big.” He obliged and bought a nip which comfortably fit in his pocket. He then concluded that “I’m a regular here and enjoy the great variety. I’ll be here for the Octoberfest. The staff are helpful and polite.”

What is unique to Digger’s is that customers can walk right into the cooler to pick their beer and take it to the counter. Nancy said this is advantageous since she or her husband, Norman, don’t have to leave the register.

Bill added that many of his customers driving through town from Connecticut and Rhode Island stop in regularly while others in the Valley towns of Sutton, Northbridge, Uxbridge and Webster are “regulars” as well. The store’s selection of craft beer and spirits draws them, since they can’t find the namebrands easily at other places or don’t find them at all.

To make sure customers can find what they are looking for, Bill keeps a notebook to track customers’ specific requests. He is glad to do this and that is part of the store’s commitment to “put in a lot of effort.”

On Monday and Wednesday nights, Nancy and Norman will be behind the counter; and on Thursday night, Lisa will take her turn and her husband, Bill, will cover the store on Friday night.

Bill and Lisa are the parents of two small daughters so, at times, their schedule has to change but one parent will always come through for the other.

MacDougall named top loan originator in Massachusetts

Pamela MacDougall The Warren Group released it’s ranking of the top loan originators in Massachusetts over the past year at the Midyear Mortgage Update & Conference, hosted by The Warren Group and the Massachusetts Assn. of Realtors.

Data was compiled from April 1, 2013 through March 1, 2014 and compared for all loan originators that work for any Bank or Credit Union.

Pamela MacDougall ranked 1st for loans produced for banks in the state of Massachusetts, 4th for loans produced in Worcester County, and 4th for total number of loans produced for Banks and Credit Unions. Cancer Center Services expand at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center at Milford Regional Medical Center with the appointment of Humberto Rossi, MD to Milford Regional’s active medical staff.

Dr. Rossi earned his medical degree from Brown University School of Medicine, Providence, RI in 1993.

Sports Shorts Valley Friendship Tour breaks fundraising records

Uxbridge Pan-Mass Kids Ride New fall, the Uxbridge Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) Kids Ride will be one of 37 PMC Kids Rides throughout New England and beyond. In 2013, the PMC Kids Rides program attracted nearly 4,700 cyclists, ages of 2 to 15, who rode between one and 26 miles in mini-bike-a-thons to raise money for cancer care and research.

The PMC Kids Rides are spokes in the PMC wheel, joining the more than 5,700 adult PMC cyclists in their mission to fund adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at DanaFarber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The PMC is a two-day, 190-mile bike-a-thon held the first weekend of every August. Since 1980, the PMC has raised $414 million for the Jimmy Fund.

PMC Kids Rides offer a way for children to become part of the PMC mission, involving young people in volunteerism and fundraising in a safe and athletic way. Since the first ride in 1998, The PMC Kids Rides program has raised more than $5.5 million.

To provide the young cyclists with an additional push, the PMC recognizes cyclists in the Kids Rides program who raise $250 or more. Riders who meet this goal are honored as Heavy Hitters and receive an official PMC sack pack and certificate to acknowledge their fundraising achievements.

The inaugural Uxbridge PMC Kids Ride expects 100 children, ages 3 to 14, to ride one of three routes of varying mileage around McCloskey Middle School in Uxbridge. The event was started by members of the Uxbridge High School Student Council with the help of their principal, Mrs. Tara Bennett, who is a past PMC rider.

Participating students have previously volunteered to help with registration for the adult ride. The Uxbridge PMC Kids Ride will hold a celebration after the ride, which will include music, face painting, energizer motivators who will cheer for young cyclists as they cross the finish line, a card making station to send to current cancer patients, a visit from Spartan, the high school’s mascot, and more. The ride hopes to raise $5,000.

The Uxbridge PMC Kids Ride will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 8 a.m. to noon, at McCloskey Middle School located at 62 Capron Street in Uxbridge. There is a $10 registration fee and a $25 fundraising minimum.

Molly Hollibaugh was only 11 years old the first time she participated in Alternatives’ Valley Friendship Tour and the 25 mile bicycle ride she took alongside her father was pretty challenging for a child. Through the years, Molly has returned to the Tour, Alternatives’ signature fundraising event, many times and this year was no exception. Of course, as an adult, the 25-mile ride she completed seems a little more manageable but, as the Douglas resident explains, no less meaningful.

“Years later the Tour is as magical and powerful as the first time. The course highlights New England’s best country roads and the people and atmosphere make for such a fun day. For sure, one of my top feel good events of the year,” says Molly.

Molly is not alone in her affinity to the Valley Friendship Tour. In fact, for the third consecutive year, the Tour broke all previous fundraising records – bringing in more than $190,000.

Alternatives, which provides services to individuals with psychiatric or developmental disabilities depends on revenue from the Tour to help purchase adaptive equipment and furnishings; cover the cost of finding and training volunteers; and support health and wellness initiatives.

The organization recently released the names of the community teams that had raised the most money. Gaudette

Insurance’s “Gerry’s Gang” earned top honors, with the Worcester Restaurant Group’s “Sole Riders” coming in second place. “Team Trinity,” made up of members from St. John’s Episcopal Church in Millville and Trinity Episcopal Church in Whitinsville, took third.

Kevin Hunt, a captain of the Sole Riders, was the top fundraiser.

Next year’s Tour has already been set for May 30th. The date is particularly appropriate as it will mark the 30th anniversary of the Valley Friendship Tour. “We were thrilled to see more than 400 people on Alternatives’ Community Plaza this year. Thirty years is a real milestone and we are hoping the community will come out in even greater numbers next year to help us celebrate,” says Karen Goldenberg, director of marketing and development for Alternatives.

Molly Hollibaugh will almost certainly be there. In fact, Molly recently joined Alternatives’ Board of Directors and she and her husband Nick are hard at work planning a new fundraiser – a cornhole tournament called the Valley Bag Toss that will be held on October 11. “We hope, like the Tour, it will become a yearly event that introduces new people to the wonderful work Alternatives is doing right here in the local area,” says Molly.

Join in the Blackstone Valley Crop Hunger Walk The Blackstone Valley Crop Hunger Walk will be Saturday, October 18 at 9:00 am. The three-mile walk will begin at Trinity Church, next to Whitinsville Town Common, and end at the Community Hall of the First Evangelical Church, next to Uxbridge Town Common.

Registration will begin at 8:30 am at Trinity Church. Walkers are to bring all donations they have collected for the Crop Hunger Walk with
