Happy Trails BSTRA’s 23rd National Trails Day a success
A hidden gem well worth the trip
BSTra’s 23rd national Trails day raised $13,471, making it a definite success thanks to the many sponsors and participants who supported the nonprofit organization’s event. Held out of the army Corps of Engineers Hodges Village dam in north oxford national Trails day generated enough income to pay for the required 50% match of $13,404; for the grant they were awarded by the Blackstone river Valley Heritage Corridor, inc. The grant was awarded for BSTra’s 2015 trail project on the Southern new England Trunkline Trail (SnETT) in uxbridge and douglas and in the douglas State Forest. The total cost of the project, which improves the local trail system for a variety of trail users is just over $26,800. Both the SnETT and the douglas State Forest are popular destinations for people to enjoy outdoor recreation and fitness. BSTra is a non-profit organization and has been working for trails since its incorporation in 1973, but increased loss of trails due to development and other factors has made its trail advocacy work even more important in recent years. never in its history has the need for trail access, preservation and maintenance been so great as it is now. BSTra is completely managed by volunteers and has approximately 500 members. 100% of the money BSTra raises from its national Trails day Fundraiser is used to fund trail projects. originated by the american Hiking Society, national Trails day exists to encourage all americans to get outside, connect with local clubs, businesses, community groups, and parks and recreation departments as well as federal land managing agencies to experience, appre-
The misty day could not dampen the spirits of family and friends that attended the recent 50th Zoobilation Celebration at the Southwick's Zoo. Brewer family matriarch, Justine Brewer, beamed with pride as she recalled the evolution of the zoo from her parents inception through today sharing her father's favorite quote hoping people would "Be amused and amazed". Growing up on the grounds, and still today, she feels that "everyday at the zoo is a new adventure". State and town officials along with Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker enjoyed touring the beautiful grounds, the Earth Ltd. Educational Center, and learning from Betsy Brewer about the evolution of the zoo. Witnessing the love and care that is bestowed upon the animals it is obvious that the zoo is a labor of love. The Brewer family not only owns and manages the zoo, but most members of the family are involved in some aspect from groundskeeping to the Veterinary care. Southwick's Zoo sits on over 200 acres of naturalistic habitats and it has been visited by families from all of the 50 states. The zoo is home to 850 exotic animals from around the world and has interactive exhibits for all ages. Currently, there are upgrades being made to buildings on the grounds, but the more exciting news was the plan for a new three-level restaurant to be built at the zoo this year. The Southwick’s Zoo Mission is to provide an extensive zoological collection and education facility while striving to promote an exciting environment for a positive family experience.
