Heritage Corridor kicks off Annual GO!

Dog Days of construction in Uxbridge

Special Tours, Walks, Paddles & Festivals

by Abigail epplett Although a severe thunderstorm washed out their July meeting, progress continues on the Uxbridge Dog Park in the 100 Acre Lot at 375 Sutton Street. The project began back in 2013 when a group of Uxbridge women met at the Jumbo Donuts to discuss the possibility of creating a dog park and subsequently formed the Uxbridge Dog Park Committee. The five members are Ali Raposo, Travis DoRosario, Cindy Scott, Jen Modica, and Laura OzellaHamel. The Uxbridge Dog Park Committee needed to raise money for the park, which could cost between $188,000 and $523,000 according to a previous speech by committee member Ali Raposo. Fundraising was initially difficult, but in 2015, Uxbridge’s Officer Josiah Morrissette greatly assisted their efforts by applying for a grant through the Stanton Foundation, which resulted in $20,500 towards the dog park. According to the website “The Stanton Foundation, created by Dr. Frank Stanton, supports areas where he was unable to complete his charitable intentions during his lifetime.” Dr. Stanton’s main interests were United States history, nuclear security, and dogs; his foundation provides grants to many organizations, with a special grant for dog parks in Massachusetts. The committee has done plenty of fundraising and self-promotion in addition to the grants. Raising money through selling personalized bricks; dogs can be memorialized by their owners through the purchase of a paver that will be placed inside the completed dog park. The committee has even participated as a vendor at Walk for Paws, an event hosted by the no-kill shelter Dog Orphans of Douglas and held at River Bend Farm in Uxbridge.

The park was designed by Berkshire Design Group of Northampton and is currently being constructed by Precision Paving of Brimfield, with aggregate and other materials from Pyne Sand & Stone Co. of Sutton and landscaping by Babe’s Lawn Care of Brimfield. So far, the paving company has poured concrete pads for shade structures, watering stations, waste stations, and benches. Another feature is a paved walking path, which allows visitors to get exercise while their “fur family” plays. The construction is so weather dependent,” explained the Uxbridge Dog Park Committee via Facebook. “The Uxbridge Dog Park will be posting the progress along the way. Perhaps when we get closer, we will have a better estimate.” To support the dog park and honor your pooch by ordering a commemorative brick, visit polarengraving.com/ uxbridgedogpark.
