Valley Friendship Tour Returns on June 11th
Participation at the “Park Serve Day” effort at River Bend Farm at Blackstone River & Canal Heritage State Park in Uxbridge went REALLY well! Historical Park hosts 2022 Walkabout Season After a two-year hiatus, the staff at Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park are pleased to announce the return of the Summer Walkabout Series. Learn about your local national park and other fascinating historic spots in the Blackstone Valley by joining them for 13 free, guided walking tours this June, July, and August. Walkabouts are hour-long walking tours that immerse participants in local history. Supervisory Ranger Kevin Klyberg explains, “a walkabout is a great way to see a familiar landscape in a new way. It may also be a chance to see a place that you have never

explored before.” This year’s lineup covers all six of the sites, or “nodes,” that make up Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. Rangers will also be offering tours in other Blackstone Valley communities, including Providence, RI, Central Falls, RI, and Worcester, MA. the Esek Hopkins House in Providence, Rhode Island. • Thursday, August 25th, celebrate the National Park Service’s 106th birthday in style by touring America’s first mill village, Slaterville, RI. This series will begin on Thursday, June 2nd, and will run on consecutive Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. EDT through August 25th. All programs are free and do not require registration. Open Sky Community Services has announced that the 37th Annual Valley Friendship Tour will return to its usual spring schedule on Saturday, June 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will start and end at the Alternatives Whitin Mill, 50 Douglas Road in Whitinsville, with yoga, music, raffles and food on the Dennis H. Rice Community Plaza at the same address. The Valley Friendship Tour is an opportunity to gather friends, family and coworkers for a day of fun and exercise in the beautiful and historic Blackstone Valley. Participants of all ages and abilities can travel along one of three non-competitive routes: a onemile walk titled the “Golden Mile”, a 5K walk/run, or a 30-mile bicycle ride. After completing their route, participants will enjoy a complimentary lunch, kid-friendly activities, raffles and live music by Far from Eden. New this year, yoga led by Brave Yoga will be offered on the Plaza. Since it began over three decades ago, the Tour has raised over $3 million in support of individuals and families in Central Massachusetts, with $160,000 being raised in 2021. For 33 years, the Valley Friendship Tour was the signature fundraising event for Alternatives Unlimited. In
2018, Alternatives affiliated with The Bridge of Central Massachusetts, another well respected non-profit with a long history in Central Massachusetts, to form Open Sky Community Services. The Valley Friendship Tour continues to be the agency’s largest fundraising event, attracting participants from throughout Central Mass, as well as nearby Connecticut and Rhode Island. Open Sky has over 100 programs through Central Mass and serves more than 4,900 individuals each year. The organization provides services and programs for youth, adults and families experiencing mental health challenges, intellectual/developmental disabilities, autism, brain injury, substance use disorders, homelessness or other complex challenges. Corporate sponsorships are expected to play a major role in the success of the event, led by Champion Sponsor, MSG Staffing . Both teams and individuals are welcome to register; pre-registration is $30 while registration the day of is $35. BVT Annual Golf Tournament BVT’s 23rd Annual Golf Tournament to be held on Monday, June 13th, at Highfields Golf & Country Club.
