Valley Friendship Tour Returns on June 11th

Historical Park hosts 2022 Walkabout Season After a two-year hiatus, the staff at Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park are pleased to announce the return of the Summer Walkabout Series. Learn about your local national park and other fascinating historic spots in the Blackstone Valley by joining them for 13 free, guided walking tours this June, July, and August.

Walkabouts are hour-long walking tours that immerse participants in local history. Supervisory Ranger Kevin Klyberg explains, “a walkabout is a great way to see a familiar landscape in a new way. It may also be a chance to see a place that you have never

explored before.” This year’s lineup covers all six of the sites, or “nodes,” that make up Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park. Rangers will also be offering tours in other Blackstone Valley communities, including Providence, RI, Central Falls, RI, and Worcester, MA. Open Sky Community Services has announced that the 37th Annual Valley Friendship Tour will return to its usual spring schedule on Saturday, June 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will start and end at the Alternatives Whitin Mill, 50 Douglas Road in Whitinsville, with yoga, music, raffles and food on the Dennis H. Rice Community Plaza at the same address.

The Valley Friendship Tour is an opportunity to gather friends, family and coworkers for a day of fun and exercise in the beautiful and historic Blackstone Valley. Participants of all ages and abilities can travel along one of three non-competitive routes: a onemile walk titled the “Golden Mile”, a 5K walk/run, or a 30-mile bicycle ride.

After completing their route, participants will enjoy a complimentary lunch, kid-friendly activities, raffles and live music by Far from Eden. New this year, yoga led by Brave Yoga will be offered on the Plaza. Since it began over three decades ago, the Tour has raised over $3 million in support of individuals and families in Central Massachusetts, with $160,000 being raised in 2021.

For 33 years, the Valley Friendship Tour was the signature fundraising event for Alternatives Unlimited. In

2018, Alternatives affiliated with The Bridge of Central Massachusetts, another well respected non-profit with a long history in Central Massachusetts, to form Open Sky Community Services. The Valley Friendship Tour continues to be the agency’s largest fundraising event, attracting participants from throughout Central Mass, as well as nearby Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Open Sky has over 100 programs through Central Mass and serves more than 4,900 individuals each year. The organization provides services and programs for youth, adults and families experiencing mental health challenges, intellectual/developmental disabilities, autism, brain injury, substance use disorders, homelessness or other complex challenges.

Fire Departments receive AED Grants of heart function in a person who may or may not have been diagnosed with heart disease. An AED analyzes the patient’s heart rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. A study from the American Heart Association found that 350,000 people suffer sudden cardiac arrest outside of the hospital every year in the U.S. “ This funding will be used to purchase life-saving equipment here in the 8th Worcester District,” commented State Representative Michael J. Soter.

“Public safety has always been a top priority of mine and ensuring our first responders are prepared is paramount.

This is another step in making this district and the overall Commonwealth a safer place to live.”

The Massachusetts Office of Grants

Representative Soter announced that the Baker-Polito Administration released grants to empower local municipalities to purchase Automated External Defibrillators (AED) for public safety and first responder vehicles. $527K of state and federal funding will equip 246 vehicles serving approximately 70% of the Commonwealth’s cities and towns. This grant opportunity was made possible by state legislation authorized by Chapter 24 of the Massachusetts Acts of 2021, An Act Making Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2022. The funding released to 8th Worcester District towns is as follows: Bellingham Fire Department - $2,500 Millville Fire Department - $2,500 Uxbridge Fire Department - $2,493 An AED is a medical device used to support people experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, which is the abrupt loss

and Research (OGR) received significant interest from municipalities for this grant opportunity. As part of its competitive process, OGR recommended funding for all 246 applicants.

Although the total funding requested exceeded the allocated state funds, Public Safety and Security Secretary Terrence Reidy authorized the use of federal Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program funds to meet the $27K difference and deliver AEDs to all grant applicants. support all requests. Of the 246 awards, 12 applicants received federal JAG funding.

Blackstone Heritage Corridor announces Chafee Heritage Award Recipients

The Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor announces the recipients of its 2021 John H. Chafee Heritage Awards: Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-02); U.S. Senator Jack Reed (RI); John Marsland of Cumberland, RI; Ross Weaver of Sutton; and a class of Painting and Design Technology students at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT).

Created by the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor, the John H. Chafee Heritage Award honors the late Senator’s legacy and recognizes individuals, groups, or students who have worked on projects that promote cultural heritage, environmental conservation, and the quality of life in the Blackstone River Valley. Past years’ recipients have celebrated community leaders, preservation heroes, business partners, environmental advocates, and students whose achievements resulted in public benefit. These heroes have demonstrated the Valley’s long tradition of leadership and inspiration.

At a ceremony held at Blackstone Valley Tech on April 11th, BHC’s Board Chair Richard T. Moore presented the prestigious Chafee Award to Congressman McGovern, a class of Painting & Design Technology students at BVT, and Ross Weaver. On April 22nd, John Marsland received his award at the premiere of “Kittacuck Speaks” at Blackstone River Theatre in Cumberland, RI. Marsland co-directed the short film that tells the story of the Blackstone River.

Seventeen sophomore students from the Painting and Design Technology program at BVT were nominated by Blackstone Heritage Corridor’s Board of Directors to receive the John H. Chafee Student Award for their participation in an interpretive map restora-

tion project in the town of Whitinsville, MA. The project was led by BVT instructor Tom Lamont and involved the restoration, printing, and installation of a 4’ x 3’ map of the Whitinsville Historic District created by town historian Ken Warchol. Lamont took on the project as an educational opportunity for the students and as a way for the school to give back to the community. The sign is located on Church Street, across from the Whitinsville Social Library.

Sutton Town Manager James Smith nominated Ross Weaver to receive the 2021 John H. Chafee Heritage Award for his gravestone conservation work in Sutton’s historical cemeteries. “Ross has become Sutton’s unsung hero in our rural world of cemetery conservation,” Smith noted. “He has led a group of 18 dedicated volunteers who have logged nearly 1,000 volunteer hours, and collectively they have made amazing progress in local historical cemetery conservation. He has worked tirelessly to preserve our cemeteries while promoting cultural heritage.”

John Marsland, president of the Blackstone River Watershed Council/ Friends of the Blackstone (BRWC/ FOB) and a resident of Cumberland, RI, was nominated by Judy Hadley of Lincoln, RI, to receive the 2021 John H. Chafee Heritage Award. According to Hadley, John has been a dedicated volunteer and steward for the Blackstone River for 32 years and has served many years as president of the BRWC/ FOB. In her nomination, Hadley noted one of John’s first volunteer efforts came in 1990 when he attended a cleanup at the Wilbur Kelly House in Lincoln, RI, and it was the impetus for him to create the Friends of the Blackstone, which later merged with the Blackstone River Watershed Council in 2006. “John’s

dedication to matters such as stewardship and recreation is demonstrated in his appreciation for the psychological and even the philosophical benefits of engagement with the river and its watershed. These are values that John sets forth in his daily life and the watershed programs he supports from “Connecting with Canoes” to Blue Mind, and too many more to mention.

John has also reached out to the local Native Americans to connect with them and invite them to be a part of BRWC/FOB’s events and cultural heritage programs.”

“Both Senator Reed and Congressman McGovern have been staunch supporters of the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor and are the lead sponsors in their respective branches of legislation to re-authorize the Corridor for another fifteen years,” explained Richard T. Moore, BHC’s Board Chair about their nominations for the 2021 John H. Chafee Heritage

Award. “Both have strong records supporting historic preservation and environmental stewardship. Congressman McGovern is also a sponsor of legislation supporting all National Heritage Areas, and Senator Reed is the “father” of the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park which is located within the National Heritage Corridor.”

Congressman Jim McGovern, who represents the 2nd District of Massachusetts and serves as the Chair of the powerful House Rules Committee, has been a longtime advocate for the Blackstone River Valley National Heritage Corridor since even before his election to Congress. The Congressman has been a strong and effective advocate for continued authorization of the Corridor, a longtime supporter of improving the water quality of the Blackstone and its tributaries, and a leader on a range of environmental issues. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, Congressman McGovern has supported efforts to save bees and other pollinators which are critical to natural resources and agriculture. In many ways, he has

demonstrated the same high standards of public service and environmental leadership as the late Senator John H. Chafee as well as the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

Senator Jack Reed has served Rhode Island since 1991, first as a congressman for the 2nd Congressional District and then as a Senator since 1997. As a member and Chair of the Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies, the Senator has been a longstanding champion and supporter of the Corridor and led the call for the creation of the Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park in 2014. The Senator has turned down cabinet positions, preferring to continue to directly serve the people of Rhode Island. His constant enthusiasm and dedication to his constituents and the state of Rhode Island follow in the legacy established

by Senator Chafee.

town News Douglas Democrats invited to attend Nominating Convention Three of the town’s Democrats will be attending the Democratic State Party’s nominating convention on Saturday, June 4th at the DCU Center in Worcester. Kate Anderson, Leo Lyons and town committee chair Lisa Mosczynski are the Douglas delegates who will be voting to endorse Democratic candidates running for state-wide office including Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State and Auditor.

The delegates will be reporting back to the Douglas Town Committee when it holds its monthly meeting on Saturday, June 11th at 10:00 a.m. in the Douglas Municipal Center at 29 Depot Street. All Douglas democrats are welcome to attend the meetings that will be held on the second Saturday of the month. Future meetings might be held virtually. Uxbridge Farm receives Food Security Grant State Representatives Michael Soter and Joseph McKenna announced that the Baker-Polito Administration released the second round of SNAP equipment grant funding. In this round of funding, the administration released $25,000 in equipment grants to 17 farmers and farmers’ markets to expand local food access points for residents with low incomes across the Commonwealth.

This second round of awards provides equipment at no cost to direct-market-

ing farms and farmers’ markets to facilitate the acceptance of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits at mobile locations. Chockalog Farm, in Uxbridge, is a recipient of equipment under the second round of funding.

“I’m thrilled to see the expansion of the acceptance of SNAP benefits across the commonwealth and in my district,” commented State Representative Michael J. Soter. “Initiatives like this one promote healthy eating and access to

Celebrating safely after graduation Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. is helping fund safe post-graduation events for the Towns of Douglas, Uxbridge, and Northbridge, this year thanks to his annual grant program.

This year, Mr. Early’s office awarded a total of $25,000 in grants to 18 different schools across Worcester County to support programming that helps keep students from drinking and driving after celebratory events like prom and graduation, preventing tragedies before they happen.

“This time of year, should be a celebration for our students and their families,” Mr. Early said. “These celebrations can turn into tragedies in the blink of an eye when drinking and driving is involved. These programs help keep kids safe while they have fun and celebrate rituals of high school life.”

Nichols to have artwork displayed at Armory Uxbridge High School Principal Michael Rubin is proud to announce that the artwork of Gage Nichols, a UHS sophomore, will be displayed as part of a state-wide project at the Springfield Armory.

“Creativity and persistence are just two of the traits that we hope to see in all of our students,” Mr. Rubin said.

“We continue to be impressed and amazed by the work of our art students, and I am proud of Gage and Ms. Struppa’s efforts in finding ways to connect our art classes to a broader audience and purpose.”

One hundred twenty-one students from six Massachusetts schools interpreted the theme: A Global Connection to create original artwork panels focusing on inventions that changed our lives and the lives of those before us, such as, the first laptop in 1982, the first cloned sheep in 1996, and the first jar of mayonnaise in 1756. Students worked with the premise that as a research and development facility, not only for military arms, but for the techniques required to manufacture them, Springfield Armory was part of a global network. Ideas from other countries were investigated and modified in Armory manufacturing techniques and designs, not just for firearms, but for many everyday items as well.

Gage’s work, completed under the direction of UHS Art Teacher Lisa Struppa, was entitled, “Assembly Line: Parts That Make a Whole.” His art, completed using printmaking media, included Softkut block, carving tools, and printing ink, and helped showcase how the Springfield Armory building used assembly lines to produce many products and specifically show how many parts contribute to the whole.

Springfield Armory National Historic Site is proud to partner with the International Fiber Collaborative and local schools to exhibit student artwork. The collaboration produced a

new temporary exhibit, A Global Connection, on display at the museum through June 13th.

About the International Fiber Collaborative: The International Fiber Collaborative (IFC), founded in 2008 as a 501(c)(3), develops community programs that create collaborative opportunities in art and civic engagement linking learning and creativity in the arts to science, math, engineering, and the humanities. During the 20182019 school year 9,645 students from 354 schools participated in 20 exhibits

at national park sites. All artwork can be seen on the IFC website.

Sutton Historical Society Happenings The Society partnered with the Millbury-Sutton Chronicle and the Sutton High School Senior Internship program to provide a 6-week work experience to Sutton senior, Myra Page.

Myra’s project included cataloguing, scanning and uploading the Society’s newsletters from 1975-present. Thanks to her efforts, visitors to the website, suttonhistoricalsocietyinc.org can now open an index of articles published, find an article they are interested in reading, and open or print the article right from their home computers or smart phones under the “Newsletters” tab on the homepage. Society members have been busy providing tours to area groups. Recently, the Sutton Striders, a group of Sutton Senior Center members, toured the General Rufus Putnam Museum, Town Center Cemetery, and the Village of

Manchaug. Members of the Oxford and Auburn DAR toured the Eight Lots School House. Individuals and groups interested in tours of Sutton’s historical locations can contact the Society at sutton1704@gmail.comsutton to coordinate. June will be a busy month for the Sutton Historical Society. On Tuesday, June 7th, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., the Society is invited to tour the Samuel Slater Experience located at 31 Ray Street, Webster. (samuelslaterexperience.org). This interactive “experience” opened in March 2022 and tells the story of Samuel Slater, considered the father of the industrial revolution and the modern factory system. This is not your “everyday” museum. You will be immersed in the time period! Group rate admission is $14 for adults, $10 for seniors 60+, and $7 for children. This is a “not-to-miss” event. Mark your calendars and join them in supporting this new museum in your own backyard.

Saturday, July 9th to Sunday July 17th will be their second annual returnable bottle and can drive. Start saving those returnable bottles and cans now.

A trailer will be placed at the M. M. Sherman Blacksmith Shop, 6 Singletary Avenue, for the week. Easy 24hour drop off. Funds generated from this event help them offset the maintenance costs of their historical locations. Help them keep history alive and get rid of those empties at the same time.

Rep. Muradian supports passage of $49.7 billion House budget for Fiscal Year 2023 State Representative David Muradian, R-Grafton, recently supported a $49.7 billion state budget for Fiscal Year 2023 that provides for increased local aid, significant funding investments in critical state programs, and the implementation of several major policy initiatives, including a ban on child marriage.

The preliminary budget proposal was engrossed by the House of Representative on a vote of 155-0 on April 27, following three days of debate on over 1,500 amendments.

The House budget provides just under $6 billion in Chapter 70 education aid to cities and towns, which represents a $494 million increase over current funding levels, and boosts minimum per pupil aid to $60 per pupil. It also includes nearly $1.2 billion in Unrestricted General Government Aid (UGGA) to support other essential municipal services. Rep. Muradian noted that under the House spending proposal, Northbridge will receive $15,786,061 in direct education aid and $2,382,564 in unrestricted state aid for the new fiscal year that begins July 1.

During floor debate on the budget, Representative Muradian successfully advocated for the inclusion of several important local initiatives for his district, including: • $25,000 for public safety improvements in the town of Grafton • 25,000 for public safety improvements in the town of Northbridge • $25,000 for public safety improve-

ments in the town of Upton • $25,000 for projects and upgrades made through the Blackstone River Watershed Assn. of Massachusetts Representative Muradian noted that the House budget fully funds 2/6th of the goal rate for Chapter 70 funding to meet the state’s obligations under the Student Opportunity Act (SOA). It also offers additional education support for municipalities by funding the Special Education Circuit Breaker at $441 million, a $47.3 million increase over the current fiscal year, while fully funding charter school aid at $243.8 million, which represents an increase of $89.2 million over current spending levels.

Regional school transportation is funded at $77.8 million, and homeless student transportation at $22.9 million.

Other funding highlights from the budget include: • $85,000 for the NEADS Inc. service dogs for veterans program • 200.3 million for the elder home care program; • $11.8 million for the elder nutrition program; • $23.5 million for grants to local Councils on Aging, with a formula; • a $70 million rate increase for the state’s childcare providers; • $16.5 million for Head Start Grants; • $115 million for the school breakfast program, including summer food programs; • $15 million for child care resource and referral agencies;

• $500,000 for the Genocide Education Trust Fund to support the development of curricular materials and professional development training related to teaching middle and high school students about the history of genocide; • a $20 million loan forgiveness program to support the Department of Mental Health workforce; • $7.5 million for the Tomorrow’s Teachers program to provide scholarships for people committed to teaching in the public schools; • $156 million in higher education scholarship funding; • $326 million for state universities, $337 million for community colleges, & $653 million for the UMass system; • $17 million for the Workforce Competitiveness Trust Fund; • $15 million for One Stop Career Centers; • $188.6 million for the Bureau of Substance Addiction Services; • $12.5 million for behavioral health supports; • $48.3 million for early intervention services; • $10 million for the Healthy Incentives Program • $150 million for the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program; • $92 million for public housing subsidies; • $140 million for Residential Assistance to Families in Transition (RAFT); • $59.4 million for HomeBASE; • $5.1 million for climate adaptation

and preparedness; and • $78.7 million for DCR state parks Language was also inserted in the House budget during floor debate that would allow funding that was previously set aside for a Massachusetts Women’s Rights History Trail to remain available until June 30, 2023.

Citing strong state tax revenue collections, Representative Muradian supported a series of tax relief amendments to help Massachusetts residents who are struggling with rising consumer prices, but all were defeated during floor debate. Among the tax relief measures voted on were proposals to: • suspend the state gas tax for 60 days; • suspend the gas tax until the average price reaches $3.70 a gallon; • double the estate tax threshold from $1 million to $2 million; • reduce the tax rate on short-term capital gains from 12 percent to 5 percent; • increase the Senior Circuit Breaker

Tax Credit to $1,755; and • provide farms with a fuel tax rebate for the operation of farm equipment While no tax relief measures were included in the final House budget, the spending proposal incorporates several new policy proposals, including language to ban child marriage, which is currently allowed under state law so long as the child’s parents grant permission. According to Muradian, six other states already ban child marriage, including RI and NY, which passed laws to prohibit this practice in 2021.

The House budget also calls for incrementally increasing the $2 million cap on the Conservation Land Tax Credit, which has helped preserve 14,110 acres of critical natural resources in Massachusetts as permanently protected open space, providing an important tool to help promote the Commonwealth’s long-term climate goals through carbon continued on page 8

State Budget continued from page 7 sequestration. Under the House proposal, the cap will increase to $5 million over a three-year period to help address the current backlog of applications, with the $2 million cap to be reinstated in 2034.

Another policy proposal included in the House budget calls for the development and implementation of a secure common application portal for individuals to simultaneously apply for stateadministered needs-based benefits and services offered by a variety of state agencies. This includes MassHealth coverage, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), veterans’ services benefits, child care subsidies, housing subsidies, fuel assistance and other needs-based health care, nutrition and shelter benefits.

Additional language included in the House budget directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to establish

a centralized website by October 1st, 2022 for the public to access a list and description of all state and federal programs for loan forgiveness or assistance, tuition reimbursement, fellowships or other workforce-related benefits in the health care and behavioral health industries.

In addition, the House budget directs the Health Policy Commission to conduct an analysis and issue a report on the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on behavioral health-related boarding in acute care hospital settings, including boarding in emergency departments, medical surgical units and observation units. The commission is due to report by July 1, 2023 with its recommendations on how to address the burden on acute care hospitals, outcomes for patients with behavioral diagnoses, and the quality of care for patients boarded in acute care settings.

The budget now moves to the Senate, which is expected to begin debating its own spending proposal.

Uxbridge students earn Engineering accolades A team of three Uxbridge High School students earned first-place in the state of Massachusetts as part of an engineering competition sponsored by the Mass STEM Hub and conducted in conjunction with industry professionals from a variety of STEM firms in Mass.

The student team of Lex Lovell, Julia Philbrook, and John Tasick earned the win for their design, not only as the best submission from UHS but from across the state of Massachusetts, which includes more than 100 secondary schools. As students have been learning in the Engineering Pathway at UHS, feedback and iteration are key components to the engineering design process, through which students get feedback from people with different viewpoints and skills, particularly those with expertise in the solution being developed. This particular challenge involved feedback from more than 200 industry professionals on more than 500 pieces of student work, representing more than 2000 students from across the Commonwealth.

“I could not be prouder of our program and all our participants, in particular these three amazing students,” said UHS Principal Michael Rubin. “That UHS students are among the top future engineers and innovators in the Commonwealth is a credit to the program and the support that so many have put in the hands of our school and educators.”

Mr. Michael Smutok’s Computer Integrated Manufacturing Class, the third of four classes in the Manufacturing Engineering Innovation Pathway, which merges technical and academic coursework with post-secondary outcomes, such as college and job placement. All of the teams that submitted a design, received specific feedback from industry professionals on their process flow diagrams, technical processes, and prototype drawings, as well as their coding process for their robot. Mr. Smutok himself is a Project Lead the Way Master Teacher and one of six teachers at UHS involved in some form of engineering course, which also includes Biomedical Science and Computer Science.

In the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) courses, high school students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects.

After learning about engineering design and manufacturing, they apply that knowledge to work in teams to design, test, and improve an engineering process. The Industry Connects process provides an opportunity for students to share their work with an authentic industry audience. These connections help make coursework more motivating, engaging, and meaningful.

For the project submitted, an example of the feedback provided by an engineer at Smith and Nephew to the UHS

students included: “The overall project flow, engineered strategy to create a successful product and amount of technical work required for this project is very impressive. The process flow charts are a key documentation practice in any engineering company.”

Mass STEM Hub is a program of the One8 Foundation that partners with schools to implement high-quality, applied learning programs. Their mission is to provide schools with access to and support for premier STEM programming that engages students and prepares them for 21st century careers.

We identify proven programs, develop supports to help ensure high-quality adoption, and create complementary offerings (e.g., trainings, events) to supercharge the impact.

Supporting schools’ adoption and quality implementation of Project Lead The Way is the first Mass STEM Hub initiative. PLTW is a premier STEM curriculum and PD provider with a proven ability to dramatically shift classroom practice, transform the teaching experience, and improve students’ interest and aptitude in STEM. PLTW has grown from a high school engineering program to offering comprehensive PreK-12 pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, balancing the rigor and engagement needed to have a real impact for students.

BVT’s Robotics Team 61 honored with District Chairman’s Award The Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT) Robotics Team 61, The Intimidators, competed against the top robotics teams from across New England during the New England FIRST Robotics Competition (NEF RC) District event held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in April. Team 61 was ranked 24th and came home with the District Chairman’s Award.

The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST; it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, and encourage more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders.

“Thank you to everyone who helped make our dream of winning this award a reality,” said Ms. Nicole Ledoux, FIRST Robotics Coach, Team 61. “For the past 28 years, Team 61 has proudly represented BVT at FIRST, and we’re

all incredibly thrilled to be awarded this outstanding honor.”

Chief Outreach Officer Natalia Vazquez (Engineering & Robotics) and Junior Outreach Officer Kate Watchmaker (Electronics & Engineering Technology) are both juniors from Mendon. They are responsible for organizing team meetings and outreach events for The First Robotics Team 61 within the community.

Team 61 provides STEM opportunities for kids at a young age through hosting events at local libraries, volunteering at middle schools to teach students robotics skills, and hosting FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge competitions. "This past year, Team 61 began an Assistive Technology program dedicated to creating products to aid differently-abled people with some of their daily routines," said Kate. "One such example is the development of Hydration Alert, our first implementation of Assistive Technology in Robotics. It was designed to help elderly farmers to stay hydrated depending on the outside temperatures, prompting them to drink through sensory-based alerts and vibrations."

BVT’s First Robotics Team 61, The Intimidators, received the prestigious NEFRC 2022 District Chairman’s Award during the NEFRC competition at WPI. The Intimidators have worked with the Center for Applied Behavioral Instruction (CABI), a school for students with special needs, to host different robotics demonstrations and visited their campus to work more interactively in a safe and controlled environment.

Become a Beecologist: How you can help Native Bumblebees Metacomet Land Trust will host biologist Rob Gegear of UMass Dartmouth as its speaker for its Annual Meeting on June 16th. Professor Gegear wants us all to become Beecologists, as in, citizen scientists who help with the study of the ecology of bees, specifically, our native bumblebees. He wants us to get to know them by taking photos, and to contribute to scientific research by sharing those sightings and, in the process, learn to make gardens and landscapes that support them. Gegear is an assistant professor of biology at UMass Dartmouth and is one of the founders of the Beecology citizen science project started when

Worcester Polytechnic Institute funded it through a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Begun in Massachusetts, it is now getting data from citizen contributors over a wider area, and welcomes photos of bumblebees on flowers from throughout North America.

The public is invited to attend the Land Trust’s annual business meeting that starts at 6:30 p.m. and the program that starts at 7:00 p.m. This is a virtual program and details and the link for the presentation and membership information can be found on the non-profit organization’s web site at www.metacometlandtrust.org.

A Great Way to Make a Living Career plans in the Trades celebrated at signing ceremony The Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School (BVT) held its 2nd annual Career Signing Day on May 6th. The ceremony celebrated its senior co-op and career placement students, who announced their career plans and signed a commitment letter to work with their employer after graduation.

This year, the senior class of 2022 had 136 students participate in the Co-op program, which represents double the number of job placements from the previous year and further illustrates the demand of local employers for BVT students. These employable young adults collectively worked almost 55,000 hours, earning a combined $815,000.00 salary over the past year.

While advanced degrees are required to enter some professions, in others, you must first convey that you have the skills an employer needs. The 38 seniors who proudly announced the great

places they will be working at after graduation had to prove they have what it takes to continue in the skilled trades. The event also recognized the local businesses employing BVT students based on their vocational skills, technical training, and expertise—the new employees are excited to further their vocational education alongside industry experts.

"There are many paths to success, and while I am proud of all of our career-focused students, I am particularly proud of these students heading directly into the workforce.

Using their high school vocational-technical training to launch their careers is the essence of our mission. They have a lot of confidence in their skills, and it takes guts and grit to go against the cultural grain of heading to college," said Principal Anthony E. Steele.

"Congratulations to all of our co-op and career placement students proceeding directly into highskill, high-wage employment."

Paying tribute to my family through the name of my business was both a daily reminder of my, “why,” and also an outward display of the type of business I want to usher into our new space.

There is a retail space available in the back, lower-half of the building, and a living area for rent in the upstairs. We’re hoping to join forces with another local business who cares as deeply for the town and its people as we do.

We’re hoping that we’ll help another business owner find their place – just as we’ve found ours.

Tonic and Truman You don’t have to look far to get a sense of the history here. When my husband and I purchased the building in March of 2020, and began the subsequent renovations, we found old newspapers, stained and crinkled with age, like some sort of antiquated confetti stuck between the walls.

They had headlines that read, “Truman Sets Up Board to Study National Health,” and “Allies Make Final Offer on Policing True.” My family and I found other treasures as we continued working, like countless bottles of vintage potions with frayed, teabrown labels.

It felt like we were taking a walk into a technicolored version of our towns rich and vibrant past. Which makes taking these steps to bringing it into a new era as the home of my growing business all the more meaningful.

The Prevailing Punch List To be honest, it would have been easier to tear the building down and start from the beginning.

Plummer Place Celebrates in style Let’s Fiesta!

Most people connect May 5th, or Cinco De Mayo, to tacos, Mexican music, fun times, and fiestas! And that is exactly what seniors and older adults experienced at Plummer Place, home of the Northbridge Senior Center, this week! Seniors came out to celebrate in their colorful attire, their serapes and sombreros for the festivities which included a special taco luncheon, special Mexican-themed desserts, maracas, pinatas and free Cinco De Mayo themed raffle baskets to include a fajita maker and a gift card to Cancun's Mexican restaurant!

“The taco luncheon provided by the Mendon Street Kitchen was incredible, the dining room felt like a Mexican street festival as the colors of the Mexican flag (red, white, and green)

“It was an incredible day spent with so many of our good friends,” said Denise Forgit, Vice Chairman of the Northbridge Council on Aging. “The dining room was filled to capacity and the entire place was alive with good vibes, merriment, authentic food, and lively music!,” added Forgit. “It was a really fun fiesta for all who attended.”

Mother's Day Celebration On May 4th, seniors and older adults celebrated Mother’s Day at Plummer’s Place, home of the Northbridge Senior Center, with a vintage Victorian tea, special treats, and a visit from First Lady Dolley Madison, also known as Janet Parnes. Janet Parnes, of Historical Portrayals by Lady J, in her role as First Lady Dolley Madison shared with the attendees the highs and lows from America’s Forgotten War ~ The War of 1812. Although riddled with missteps and military ineptness, this War, however, changed perspectives and generated policies that helped sculpt the United States into a world power.

Plummer Place’s dining space was full and beautifully decorated in different shades of pink, yellow and green!

Janet Parnes, of Historical Portrayals by Lady J, (above center) in her role as First Lady Dolley Madison shared with the attendees the highs and lows from America’s Forgotten War. Spectacular floral centerpieces, donated from Shaw’s grocery store thanks to Amy Chen and Deb Sinatra, graced each table and added to the feel of a bygone era. In a free raffle drawing, a gorgeous rose-covered teapot and a lovely lavender bath basket complete with soaps, body lotions, and hand creams were awarded to two lucky winners.

“It was a delightful afternoon! Janet Parnes is a wonderful entertainer and we loved seeing and hearing her perform about America’s Forgotten War. We also enjoyed the stunning vintage tea decorations, the tea-themed desserts

from The Gingersnap Baker and gathering to celebrate both Mother's Day and women in general!” said Nancy Hill, one of the attendees.

Janet Parnes’ performance was supported by a grant from the Northbridge Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

MRMC Ortho & Sports Medicine Center opens Treating RED-S: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) — a condition of energy imbalance in athletes in which the body will steal fuel from other sources, continues to be diagnosed in a growing number of athletes internationally and is among conditions treated at Milford Regional’s recently opened Ortho-

pedics and Sports Medicine Center at 98 Prospect Street in Milford.

RED-S was introduced by the International Olympic Committee in 2014, refining the condition referred to as Female Athlete Triad which was coined in 1992. According to Milford Regional Family and Sports Medicine Physician Amy Costa, MD, CAQSM, the diagnoses began to evolve following the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments in 1972, when the inclusion of women in sport was recognized and then increased dramatically.

Prior to the established diagnosis of

Female Athlete Triad/RED-S, sports medicine clinicians thought that female athletes losing periods was a normal state with training and competition.

“We now know this to be evidence of energy imbalance in female athletes,” said Dr. Costa, who has a special interest in RED-S, and treats patients for this and a number of other sportinduced injuries and conditions at the Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Center.

Often unrecognized and undiagnosed, RED-S is common in both male and female athletes, and can include: Low energy; The loss of menstrual

periods in girls/women and drop in hormone levels for both boys/men and girls/ women; Low bone density; High risk for overuse or other sports injury; and Poor athletic performance.

According to Dr. Costa, competition and training will suffer without adequate fueling and recovery. She advises that athletes in training should be deliberate in their nutrient fueling, ensure that their diet includes plentiful and appropriate snacks and meals; and make certain that recovery days are worked into their training regimens.

“Body Mass Index shouldn’t be the

only consideration when evaluating adolescent and young adult athletes.

Nutritional intake and recommendations need to be highly personalized to the individual athlete and his or her activity level and type,” said Dr. Costa, who explains that even nutrient fueling for athletes who play the same sport, but different positions, tends to vary. “I would treat and advise a lacrosse goalie differently than I would a lacrosse midfielder or attacker.”

Community Service Projects around the Valley Beginning Monica Colon from Northbridge High School took part in this year’s Blackstone Valley Youth Leadership Academy (BVYLA). As part of the curriculum, students must create and implement a local community service project and write a press release for their design.

BVYLA, an annual program of the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation (BVEF), is comprised of 25 freshmen and sophomore students from BVEF full member high schools. The 6-month program seeks to develop the skills necessary for students to become leaders in their schools, communities, and future workforce. The mission of the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is to build connections between local schools and businesses, enrich education, and develop the next generation of workers, employers, and leaders.

Monica's project was intended to educate the public about the importance of understanding how to take care of and respect exotic pet animals. Because many people lack understanding of the amount of time, effort, money, respect and responsibility that it takes to keep

UHS Senior becomes first Spartan to earn Seal of Biliteracy Uxbridge High School principal Michael Rubin is proud to announce that Uxbridge senior Litzi Loja will become the first Uxbridge High School student to be officially awarded the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy.

“After the many challenges that our students have faced, it is indeed an honor to recognize a student like Litzi for her hard work and talent,” said Mr. Rubin. “We certainly hope that with Litzi being the first Spartan to achieve this award that she will inspire others to work hard toward this achievement.”

The STATE Seal of Biliteracy is an award given in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in two or more languages by the time they reach high school graduation.

Litzi Loja It recognizes the value of bilingualism, encourages students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills our students attain, and can be evidence of skills that are

attractive to future employers and college admissions offices. Research shows that becoming bilingual has long-term cognitive, cultural and economic benefits.

“The Seal of Biliteracy is a mechanism by which we can highlight the incredible talent of some of our students and demonstrate how students can become effective communicators in multiple languages,” Mr. Rubin said.

“Our language department has been ahead of the curve with respect to its instruction, and for educators of both English and Spanish at UHS, they indeed share the credit for their capability, innovation, and reflection over these past several years, to support and enhance the experiences of many students, including Litzi.”

The World Language department of Anna Drakulich, Sarah Gaudet, Molly Hendrickx, and Cecelia Moquete all contributed to the study for the seal of biliteracy. Ms. Hendrickx, in particular, supported many of the assessment efforts toward meeting the bilingual standard.

The Seal of Biliteracy movement is a national effort to value and reward biliteracy and the legislation surrounding it represents a formal commitment by the state to the importance of language learning in this global environment. As part of a comprehensive bill to overhaul English language learning education, the MA legislation called “Language Opportunity for Our Kids” or the LOOK Bill, was signed into law

by Governor Baker on November 22nd,

2017. This legislation and state oversight creates a directive to language programs that the historic grammarbased language instruction is not effective and does not produce proficiency.

This award intends to recognize students who have achieved proficiency in English as well as one or more additional languages, whether it be a native language, a heritage language, or an additional language learned in school or in another setting. The awards are a statement of accomplishment that helps to signal evidence of a student’s readiness for career and college, and to engage as a global citizen. The list reflects the editorial team’s determinations of the most influential professionals to Central Massachusetts’ economy in that last 12 months. The 2022 “Power 50” list was published in May. Kelly, who has served the hospital industry for nearly 40 years, was honored in the category of health care.

Other categories recognized in this year’s list include manufacturing, higher education, money and influence, technology, real estate, arts and culture, community development and nonprofits. Vice Chair of the Milford Regional Board of Trustees Anthony Consigli of Consigli Building Group was also honored, in the category of real estate.
