18th Annual Home and Business Expo the Blackstone valley Chamber of Commerce will host its 18th annual home and Business expo on saturday, March 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at northbridge high school. the event is the BvCC’s largest, and most attended of the year, hosting close to 100 exhibitors and over 2,000 attendees. the day is a great means of exposure and promotion for businesses of the valley and surrounding regions. exhibitors range from business, home improvement, agriculture, and arts & entertainment. the day offers entertainment for the entire family with interactive booths, food and refreshments, face painting, live demos/performances, and much more. the show’s traditional ChowderFest will be back and go from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Contestants from local restaurants and eateries will sample their best chowder dishes, competing for ‘Best Judged’ and ‘People’s Choice’ awards. “this is an exciting event because it gives a substantial opportunity to our local businesses, many of which are small and/or sole proprietorships,” says Jeannie hebert, Chamber President and Ceo. “it puts their name in front of thousands of area residents, allowing them to meet their community and gain new customers, clients and business.” this event is open to all. Forum to address Substance Abuse & Mental Health Resources

Selected to All State Music Festival Whitinsville Christian high school is pleased to announce Andrew Baker, vocalist, Michael Dunlap, violist, and hannah Mercer, vocalist, have been selected to participate in the 2016 Massachusetts Music educators Association’s 61st All-state Music Festival, which will be held March 10-12 in Boston. Andrew, a senior, is the son of Darrell and laurie Baker, of northbridge; Michael, a senior, is the son of Christopher and shari Dunlap of uxbridge; and hannah, a junior, is the daughter of
James and ellen Mercer of Millville. the Massachusetts Music educators Association sponsors the music festival, and participation gives students an opportunity to demonstrate their artistry and create new friendships. the musicians were required to audition in late-January to qualify for their spot. they were judged based on technical abilities and musicality in performing a prepared piece of music and selected scales, as well as in sight-reading.
on tuesday, March 8th, the uxbridge Coalition for a Community of Caring, in partnership with a number of community organizations, the office of representative Kevin Kuros (r-uxbridge), the office of the Worcester County District Attorney Joseph early, uxbridge Police and Fire, and the uxbridge high school, will be hosting a Community Forum on substance abuse prevention and mental health resources. the event, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be hosted at the uxbridge high school Auditorium. As part of the local and regional efforts to reduce substance use and build healthy communities, they are holding this Community Forum to share their stories and make resources available to those in need. Whether it is a particular family member, friend, or neighbor, the opioid epidemic has affected many. the preconceived notion of what a drug user looks like, is long gone. in holding that the best defense is working together to support one another, make resources known, and help those in need, they invite you to attend this evening with them. Parent involvement for prevention is the single most important factor affecting whether or not a child will use drugs. Parents may not always realize it, but they hold the key when it comes to keeping their child drug free. Ac-

Spending quality time and eating meals together are great ways to build the relationships among family members. Parents attitude toward drinking or drugs also has a big impact, and young people need to know that drinking and drugs are not acceptable. Katie truit and Meghan Giacomuzzi from the Missin’ Matt Foundation, will talk about families struggling with addiction and the path their personal journey took. this will be followed by a panel discussion facilitated by substance abuse specialist, Amy leone, Ms, MA, lMhC, owner of Community impact. the panelists will be sharing information on local offerings and what supports are available for individual access, and how you can help with prevention efforts. in order to respect those who may be uncomfortable asking questions during this televised event, they are requesting that individuals email questions for the panel to uxbCommunityForum@gmail.com. this will also allow them to make the most efficient use of the time and provide needed resources in advance. informational tables will be available to visit and resource packets will be provided. Knowing that accessing services and navigating “the system” can be very challenging, they will be offering onsite intervention and treatment options from Community impact. their clinical staff will help families and those struggling begin to explore the journey of recovery. Please join them in working to keep uxbridge a safe and healthy community for youth and their families.
