Rotary to host Wine & Chocolate Tasting The Rotary Club of Uxbridge would like to remind everyone to save the date for their 11th Annual Wine & Chocolate Tasting Fundraising Event, which will be held on Saturday March 1, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. at Blissful Meadows Golf Club, 801 Chockalog Road, Uxbridge.

As always, the event will include two floors of Wine and Beer Selections provided by Lynch’s Riverview Wine & Spirits, and an assortment of chocolate confections, along with hot and cold hors d’oeuvres.

Art Assn. hosts Choco-L'Art Exhibit The Blackstone Valley Art Association will host it's 3rd Choco-L'art art exhibit at the Whitinsville Social Library.

The show will be on display from February 1st thru the 13th with an artist reception and chocolate tasting the 8th from 10-2 p.m. On display will be small works of art priced to give your loved one for Valentine's day as an everlasting gift of love.

On going are 2 other BVAA exhibits. Milford TV, 138 S. Main, Milford is hosting a Winter's themed show. Opening reception will be Thursday February 27th from 6-8 p.m.

Alternatives at 5 S.Main, Uxbridge is hosting our 3rd Annual Anything Goes Photo exhibit. The recipient of McCloskey Middle School’s second Crystal Apple Award is music teacher Mr. Brian Hicks. In the short time that Mr. Hicks has been here, he has worked tirelessly in his efforts to provide a rich and rewarding music program for the students of McCloskey Middle School.

Brian Hicks has been given the task of teaching not only Band and Chorus, but also General Music. Brian is humble, has shown a great deal of resiliency, and consistently puts his students at the forefront of his work. With schedule changes that have occurred, Brian has volunteered much of his own time to work with students who showed a strong desire to enhance their musical experience. He has shown great effort and his ability to communicate effectively with his students as well as the families of McCloskey Middle School students is stellar.

Brian’s accomplishments, in addition to his teaching, somewhat recently included organizing the performance of his Band students in the Uxbridge Veteran’s day parade. He also conducted an overwhelmingly successful Winter Concert that included about 180 Band and Chorus students performing impressively. during this performance, Brian spent much of his own time meticulously preparing and setting up the auditorium for the concert. Yet when it was time to give praise for the concert, Brian was quick to give his students all of the credit for the performance. It is with great pleasure to present Brian Hicks with this well deserved recognition.

Douglas Rabies Clinic There will be a rabies clinic on Saturday, February 22, at the douglas Highway Garage located at 56 Main Street.

Vaccinations are being provided by dr. Brandi Golden, d.V.M. from Sutton Animal Hospital. Only rabies shots will be given. Please bring all rabies certificates with you to the clinic. Cat vaccinations will be between 9:00-10:30 and dogs will be between 10:30-Noon. Please be courteous and bring your pet to the appropriate session. All cats must be in carriers and all dogs must be leashed. Through your actions, you have shown what it means to “love your neighbor”.

We are sincerely grateful for the many generous financial and food donations from our local churches, schools, businesses and families, as well as the

numerous events which were held to benefit the pantry throughout the past year.

Our deepest appreciation goes to our faithful volunteers who help us to assist approx. 100 families each month.

Many of these families are coming to the pantry for the first time, and it is our hope to show them the love of Christ.

dear Editor, Now that the Holidays are done, I thought I should take a minute to thank a local business in Uxbridge, Lav’s Autobody located at 128 South Main St. Over the past years Lav’s has always done excellent autobody repair work on any vehicle we have brought to them. Their work is of high quality, done timely and they are always helpful with car rentals when required. In November of 2013 I had to bring my car in for an appraisal for a rear end accident that I had. dave from Lav’s did my estimate even though it was pouring rain out. He noticed that I had my 2012 Boston Marathon decal on my rear bumper. I have run 7 Boston Marathon’s but this was the last one I ran so I placed the decal on my bumper. dave mentioned that he was not sure he could save the decal but that they would do their best to do so. I told him it was ok if they could not but he insisted on trying to save it knowing that I earned it from completing the marathon. I picked up my car when they notified me it was complete. It looked great. I completely forgot about our conversation about the marathon decal. The next day I was placing my gym bag and briefcase in my back seat and noticed something on the floor behind the driver’s seat. I reached down and picked it up and realized it was my marathon decal cut out of my old bumper. Wow, this was one of the most thoughtful things anyone has done for me. I could hardly believe that the staff at LAV’s took the time to cut this out of my bumper and return it to me.

I want everyone to know that dave and his staff really care about their customers and take pride in their work. The town of Uxbridge and surrounding towns should feel real proud of this company as I do.

Town News Douglas Democrats to hold Convention Caucus Registered democrats in douglas will hold a convention caucus at the Municipal Center at 29 depot Street on Wednesday, February 12, at 7 p.m. to elect three (3) delegates and three (3) alternates to the 2014 Massachusetts democratic Convention. delegates will be divided equally between men and women.

The Convention will be held on Friday, June 13th and Saturday, June 14th at the dCU Center in Worcester.

At that time, democrats from across the state will gather to endorse candidates running for statewide offices.

The caucus is open to all registered democrats in douglas. All ballots will be written and secret. Those not elected as delegate and/or Alternate and who meet the qualifications may apply

to be add on delegates in the following categories: youth, minority, and disabled. discrimination on the basis of race, sex, age, color, creed, national origin, disability, religion, ethnic identity, sexual orientation or economic status in the conduct of the caucus is strictly prohibited. 3rd Annual Craft and Vendor Fair The GFWC Uxbridge Woman’s Club will be hosting their 3rd Annual Craft & Vendor Fair on Saturday, April 12th, from 11 am to 3 pm to be held at the McCloskey Middle School Gymnasium at 62 Capron Street, Uxbridge.

Last year’s event featured over 80 vendors from crafts, food, candles, clothes, jewelry, balloon animals, kitchen ware, photography and much more. There will be refreshments and food served at the event. The proceeds from this event will aid our club in providing 2 yearly scholarships. In years past, the club has awarded scholarships, as well as helped to assist funding for community service projects.

Uxbridge Rotary awards scholarships to students ment to academic excellence. Scholarship winners who were not able to attend the awards dinner held last week were invited to join rotary members at an upcoming meeting when they are home from school during spring or summer break.

This year's scholarship recipients were: Abbey Barkley: Northbridge High School, Mikaela Shanley: Uxbridge High School, Zachary Roper and Amanda Gresian:douglas High School and Molly Stark and James dunlap: Whitinsville Christian School. We congratulate them on all they have accomplished in their first semester of school and wish them the best of luck in their continuing education.

The Uxbridge Rotary Club is able to provide scholarships each year utilizing funds raised through various charitable events during the year. With the help and support of the local community we will continue our efforts to make a difference not only here in the Valley, but around the world through our affiliation with Rotary International.

The Rotary Club of Uxbridge is pleased to announce that they will be offering scholarships to local students at Uxbridge High School, douglas High School, Northbridge High School, The Whitinsville Christian School and Blackstone Valley Tech this year.

my car! Myself and the car in front of me pulled over. When I got near her she took off into the woods heading toward the rail road tracks. The man couldn’t stay but helped me by watching her while I moved my car out of the road. I quickly called my husband, who came right down. We searched for her all the way to the tracks, where we finally found her. We both went in two different directions hoping she’d come to one of us. When it looked like she was about to bolt, she turned and ran right to Rick, collapsing into his arms.

I couldn’t believe it! Rick carried her about half a mile out of the woods. We brought her right over to Uxbridge Animal Hospital. dr. Cowan and dr.

Kucia understood she was not ours and they too saw what we did … A pitiful, helpless creature who was worth saving.

I started putting information about Kismet on Facebook on Uniquely Uxbridge and my business and personal page. (Please feel free to check it out!) Telling how this stray, fearful dog was now sweet, trusting and so calm, amazed and inspired! Her tail would wag the minute the staff came back and especially when there was food! Which she took so gently. She looked so thankful & relieved! Reading all of this, everyone fell in love with her, as we all had. Everyone quickly realized the fate she would have had if she had not been found as the snow started to fall and the 5 degree nights came.

People started offering to foster, adopt and donate to help pay her vet bill.

THAT is how the town’s people jumped into help.

Kismet was in a bad way. Visually, she was covered in ticks (pulling over 100 off), extremely under weight (she vomited an entire bird the next day!

That was her last meal), lacerations on her hind legs and a very large one from front to back in her arm pit. She could not stand on her hind leg. On x-ray it showed she had a two broken ribs and a fractured pelvis. Her blood work showed no heartworm disease and her over heath was good, but she was anemic and had Lyme disease. All of which can be treated, so with the help of the fantastic doctors and staff at UAH and the generosity and support of the town, we did it. The doctor’s patched up her lacerations and did surgery on her hip. At the end of the week, her total bill was $2500. Sadly, she needs more care after she heals from her hip surgery. She still needs to be spayed, has 2 broken canine teeth and a few other issues. All of that will be another $2000. As of 1/24/14, we are up to $1500 in donations. We are trying to put together some fundraisers to help pay the remainder of the bill.

Library plans February Vacation events during the February school vacation, the Whitinsville Social Library will be having a Learn to Knit Class for children ages 9 thru 17 with local needle arts teacher, Madonna Terlizzi, on Tues., Feb. 18th from 12:30 until 1:30.

Music and Movement for Tots with deb Hudgins will be held on Wed. morning of that week at 10:30. Story & Craft time for ages 2 and up will be on Thurs. at 10:30 a.m. Both programs are drop in.

Art Camp with Erin Lewis will be held on Thurs. at 11:30 for ages 6 and up. Registration is required.

Marine Corps League thankful for donations Blackstone Valley detachment 911, Marine Corps League, would like to thank everyone that made our annual Toys for Tots & Teens 2013 Campaign (Toys for Tots), a success. Our thanks go out to those businesses that allowed us to place collection boxes in their stores.

In all, 64 locations collected toys. We want to thank those in the community that donated toys to the campaign.

Thank you Northbridge High School Honor Society and Blackstone Valley Tech. Because of your efforts and donations, we’re sure many kids had a great Christmas.

Thank you to the Millville American Legion for allowing us to use their facility as our distribution center. This year we collected over 6,000 toys, and gave out over 5,500 toys at the center.

The following organizations and the general public were recipients of this unprecedented effort. Human Service organizations, local churches, food pantries, first responders such as the police and fire departments of the Blackstone Valley, and most importantly, all the moms and dads that were able to give the children a Very Merry Christmas. All told we gave toys to 221 families or organizations. We are proud to say that 526 children received toys for Christmas.

Blackstone Valley detachment 911 has been conducting this campaign for many years. Our goal is to make sure every needy family within the Blackstone Valley and beyond has toys for their children at Christmas. None of this would be possible if not for the Marines and Veteran volunteers that staff the distribution center.

Legislators welcome Uxbridge students to the State House Sen. Richard T. Moore, d-Uxbridge, Rep. Kevin J. Kuros, R-Uxbridge, and Rep. Jeffrey N. Roy, d-Franklin, welcomed Uxbridge High School social studies students to the State House. The group was accompanied by social studies teachers Lauren Bouchard and Hurley Silbor.

“I was pleased to welcome the Uxbridge social studies students to their State House for a tour of the building and to learn more about state government,” stated Sen. Moore. “To effectively study social studies or civics, students should be encouraged to roll up their sleeves and visit historic places or government buildings, like

the State House, many of which are located right in our backyards. Sen. Richard T. Moore, d-Uxbridge, is pleased to announce that towns across the Worcester and Norfolk senatorial district have been awarded Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and Senior SAFE Program grants for Fiscal Year 2014.

“The S.A.F.E. program enables schools to teach kids of all ages about fire dangers and emergency preparation techniques in order to promote safety while mitigating the risk of preventable injury or death,” said Sen. Moore. “By expanding the program to seniors, who face the greatest risk of fire-related deaths in Massachusetts, we will be able to further achieve these important goals.

I applaud the fire departments which recognized the value and success of the S.A.F.E. program, and applied for the grants in order to offset diminished local resources.”

The Student Awareness of Fire Education, or S.A.F.E., program provides fire and life safety education programs for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Since the program began 19 years ago, the department of Fire Services has reported a 70 percent reduction of average annual fire deaths of children under age 18.

The Legislature expanded the S.A.F.E. program as part of the FY 2014 State Budget to include funds for Senior SAFE programs to support senior fire prevention training. Senior citizens are the most vulnerable of populations at risk of fire related deaths.

Timothy J. Harvey, An American Hero joins Moore’s staff Timothy J. Harvey of Blackstone has joined the staff of Senate President Pro Tempore Richard T. Moore, dUxbridge, as district director.

“It is an honor to have a ‘real American hero’ serving on my State House staff,” Sen. Moore stated, noting that Harvey, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal in 2012 for outstanding service and commitment, as well as a personal accolade from his commanding officer for demonstrating superior leadership.

“Tim brings his outstanding marketing and management skills, his demonstrated leadership, and an inspiring personality to the position of district director.

Town officials, business leaders, and constituents will find him especially helpful as he supports my efforts to better serve the people and communities of the 14 towns of the senatorial district.”

“It is an honor to join Senator Moore’s staff as his district director,” said Harvey. “I have known Sen. Moore for a few years, and have come to know him as a man who is dedicated to his constituents. When offered this position, my answer was a quick ‘yes’ knowing I would be able to assist in his efforts while engaging in public service under his leadership. As district director, Mr. Harvey will work closely with local officials, senior centers, students, and businesses in the Worcester and Norfolk senatorial district which includes the towns of Bellingham, Blackstone, douglas, dudley, Hopedale, Mendon, Milford, Millville, Northbridge, Oxford, Southbridge, Sutton, Uxbridge, and Webster. He will also provide assistance to constituents of those towns, and will represent Sen. Moore at meetings when the Senator’s duties require him to be in Boston for legislative sessions and meetings. Mr. Harvey will also coordinate the work of the Senator’s new Senate Youth Advisory Council comprised of student leaders from area high schools.

Harvey succeeds denise Chan, formerly of Hopedale, who has decided to put more time into her young family, although she will continue to assist Sen. Moore as a volunteer.

A native of Blackstone, Massachusetts, Harvey was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010-2011. He was subsequently assigned as commander of the Engineer Company, Marine Wing Support Squadron 373, based in San diego. Under then,1st Lt Harvey’s leadership, the Marine Corps Engineer Association designated his unit as “Engineer Company of the Year” for 2010. Captain Harvey continues mili-

Mr. Harvey, who holds a Bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Rhode Island (2008) and a Master of Business Administration in marketing graduate degree from San diego State University (2013), is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he rose to the rank of Captain. He is also a Certified Professional Fitness Instructor.

Mr. Harvey is a graduate of Blackstone-Millville Regional High School in Blackstone, Massachusetts.

After college and the Marine Corps, Harvey has worked for Car2Go, a car share service in San diego, California while completing his graduate degree.

While in California, Harvey volunteered with Habitat for Humanity’s public relations task force and house construction department. He served as a dedicated member of Best Buddies, helping those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In addition, he and his father raised $14,000 for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, providing financial aid to service members in need. during his undergraduate days, Mr. Harvey worked as a summer counselor at the Blackstone Valley Boys and Girls Club in Blackstone.

Harvey is the son of Timothy and Toni Harvey of Blackstone. His mother, Toni, was a member of the Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee for many years.

One Act Play Festival Winners Alternatives has announced the winners of its recent One Act Play Festival on the Mumford. Ten plays were performed with prizes awarded in three categories. Winning in the Children’s category was The Runaway Bunny, performed by the Harvard (MA) Family Theater. Stepping Stone Community Theater, an inclusive theater group, took top honors in the Young Adult category with selections from Schoolhouse Rock. Two Adult category plays tied for the award: Land’s End Café, an original work written by Worcester playwright Ann Marie Shea, and Recess, another original play written and directed by Kara Emily Krantz. Judges for the Festival were two long time stalwarts of the Central Massachusetts theater community, Bill Taylor and don Frabotta.

Other groups performing in the competition included the Northbridge High School drama Club, Alternatives’ Young Adult Theater Group, 4th Wall Stage Company, Seth Leary, and a group from Community Healthlink Resident division.

Speaking about the diversity of both performers and plays, Alternatives’ Executive director dennis H. Rice said, “One of Alternatives highest priorities is to live in a more collaborative and diverse community Watching the actors and audience from all walks of life and abilities come together to celebrate the arts was a wonderful thing to see.”

Findlay honored with Presidential Award douglas Middle School is proud to announce that Mrs. Jessica Findlay has won! She was named the recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching for Math, from Massachusetts. One math teacher and one science teacher are selected, per state, so she is one of only 102 teachers from across the entire country.

Change lives while having fun Alternatives, one of Central Massachusetts’ leading human service providers will be hosting a Meet & Greet to mark the kickoff of its new initiative, Club 21 Blackstone Valley. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, February 12, in the Heritage Gallery at Alternatives, 50 douglas Road, Whitinsville.

Club 21 Blackstone Valley is a social club whose members include adults with developmental disabilities served by Alternatives, partnered with people from the general community. The program is funded by the Real Friends Project.

Partners, who are matched around common interests, meet twice a month. Once with their partner and once with other club members in a small group or with the whole club, to enjoy activities such as picnics, watching sporting events, attending a play or movie, or sharing a hobby.

The Club Coordinator is available to

help plan activities and Club membership only requires a 5-hour/ month commitment.

Club 21 provides an opportunity to meet new people, build friendships and explore what the community has to offer. It’s a chance to make a real difference in the life of someone with a disability while having fun in the process.

Sergeant Ashcraft Retires USAF Master Sergeant daryl W. Ashcraft has retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. MSgt Ashcraft was born in Uxbridge and is a 1993 graduate of Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School. He entered the Air Force in december 1993. He is the son of donald and Patricia Ashcraft of Uxbridge.

Following his tour in Korea he was transferred to RAF Lakenheath, England. He spent the next 6 years working F-15C/d/E aircraft while assigned to the 48th Component Maintenance Squadron. He deployed to Iceland and Qatar during his time there. From RAF Lakenheath he was transferred to McConnell AFB, KS. He was assigned to the 22nd Maintenance Squadron and worked KC-135 aircraft.

Food for Thought GOAL: One thing at a time. It’s easy for our attention to get drawn in multiple directions simultaneously in today’s world of instant emails, texting, and trying to get it all done. It’s no wonder why stress can be on the rise when so much stimulation constantly seeks your attention. Not having wild mustangs running around in your head leads toward a calmer mindset which is a prerequisite for improved health. Practicing “one thing at a time” is a tool that gives you back the power to help relax your mind and in turn, your body. When you decide to give 100% of yourself to one thing at a time, you take back control of the one thing that you really do have control of: what you focus your attention on. Try it and see for yourself how this mindful practice can help reduce stress and promote a calmer mind and body. Sometimes less really is more.

The law mandates health insurance coverage, but not every business or individual will be affected by this requirement. Here’s an overview of who will be affected.

Part II: For Individuals: It’s all about coverage Currently, attention is focused on the health insurance exchanges or “Marketplace” that opened for business on October 1. Confusion about the Affordable Care Act has left many people thinking everyone has to deal with the exchanges. The fact is that if you are covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or an employer-provided plan, you don’t need to do anything.

Also, if you buy your health insurance on your own and are happy with your plan, you can keep your coverage (assuming that your plan is still offered by the insurance company). However, the only way to get any premium-lowering tax credits based on your income is to buy a plan through the Marketplace.

• The exchanges (Marketplace) Each state will either develop an insurance exchange (Marketplace) or use one provided by the federal government. The Marketplace will allow those seeking coverage to comparison shop for health plans from private insurance companies.

There will be four types of insurance plans to choose from: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The more expensive the plan, the greater the portion of medical costs that will be covered. The price of each plan will depend on several factors including your age, whether you smoke, and where you live.

Many individuals will qualify for federal tax credits which will reduce the premiums they actually pay. Each state’s Marketplace will have a calculator to assist individuals in determining the amount, if any, of their federal tax credit.

• The individual play or pay penalty If you’re one of the 45 million or so Americans without health insurance, you will need to get coverage for 2014 or pay a penalty of $95 or 1% of your income, whichever is greater. Lowincome individuals may qualify for subsidies and/or tax credits to help pay the cost of insurance.

The penalty increases to $325 or 2% of income for 2015 and to $695 or 2.5% of income for 2016. For 2017 and later years, the penalty is inflation-adjusted.

Those who choose not to be insured and to pay the penalty instead will still be liable for 100% of their medical bills.

NOTE: If you will be shopping for health insurance on the Marketplace, be aware that there’s no need to rush to enroll; the enrollment period runs from October 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014. Take the time you need to review your options and select what’s best for you and your family.

Established in 1976 through a collaborative effort of the Massachusetts Senate and the University of Massachusetts, this two day seminar features presentations by senators and staff on aspects of the day to day experience of legislators in the Commonwealth.

Topics will include the history and process of the Legislature, the parliamentary role of the Clerk of the Senate and the future of the Legislature.

The CLS culminates with a simulated legislative hearing and Senate session where participants are invited to use what they have learned and participate as “senators” in the Senate Chamber in order to have a first hand experience of the legislative process.

Make Skin Health a Priority in 2014 Make Skin Health a Priority in 2014 The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends adopting a complete sun protection regimen to prevent early skin aging and skin cancer. The new year is fast approaching, and with it comes the opportunity to ditch unhealthy habits.

The Skin Cancer Foundation urges everyone to put skin health on their list of New Year's Resolutions. Here are five healthy and potentially lifesaving habits to adopt in 2014: 1. Protect Yourself Every day Sun protection is essential to skin aging and skin cancer prevention: about 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are caused by the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. Since UV damage is cumulative over a lifetime, it is something to be concerned about on a daily basis.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends these sun protection tips: •Seek the shade, especially between 10am and 4pm.

• do not burn.

• Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

• Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. daily use of a sunscreen with SPF 15+ reduces skin aging by 24 percent.

•Apply 1 ounce (a shot glass full) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours after swimming or excessive sweating.

2. Visit the doctor's Office for a Yearly Professional Skin Exam Skin cancer, the most prevalent cancer, is also the most treatable cancer when detected early. The survival rate for patients whose melanoma is detected early, before the tumor has penetrated the skin, is about 99 percent. The survival rate falls to 15 percent for those with advanced disease.An annual fullbody skin exam performed by a dermatologist is essential.

3. Perform Routine Self-Exams While self-exams shouldn't replace the important annual skin exam performed by a physician, they offer the best chance of detecting the early warning signs of skin cancer. If you notice any change in an existing mole or discover a new one that looks suspicious, see a physician.

4. Avoid Tanning There is no such thing as a safe tan: the darkened complexion that results from UV exposure actually represents dNA damage to the skin. The cumulative damage caused by sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, as well as wrinkles, brown spots and other signs of premature skin aging. People who first use a tanning bed before age 35 increase their risk for melanoma by an alarming 75 percent. Just one visit to a tanning salon also increases the risk for the two

most common forms of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, by 29 percent and 67 percent, respectively.

5. Go With Your Own Glow The Skin Cancer Foundation advocates embracing one's natural skin tone. The Foundation's Go With Your Own Glow™ campaign encourages women to love and protect their skin, whatever its natural hue. However, those who can't resist the bronzed look but won't sacrifice their health to achieve it should consider sunless UV-free tanners. They are available in many different formulations, including creams, lotions, gels, pump sprays, aerosols and wipes.

St. Camillus Adult Day Health Center hosts BVCC event Several times a year members of the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce come together after work for a fun evening of networking and refreshments hosted at a new business in the area. Last month, the Chamber kicked off its second event of the New Year with Business After Hours, hosted at the recently opened St. Camillus Adult day Health Center, whose facility is located in the newly renovated Linwood Mill.

The presenting sponsor for the event was CareProvider Visiting Nurse Agency, a leader in quality in-home healthcare for patients across the Blackstone Valley. CPVNA will soon be expanding its services with the acquisition of a new facility on Rte. 146.

Alternative’s Community Plaza welcomes a new perspective On a chilly winter morning, several staff at Alternatives put their work gloves on alongside artist Nick Swearer to install five of Swearer’s thought provoking bronze figures on the Community Plaza at the Whitin Mill.

Called “Perspectives,” the grouping of human forms is made up of individual sculptures depicting “Questioning,” “See No Evil,” “Vanity,” “Two-faced,” and “Feminist.”

Though the "guests" are not permanent fixtures on the Plaza, helping them into their temporary home was no easy

Harbro reaches goal of 400 Facebook Fans On december 20, 2013 with little time to spare and only 365 fans to speak of Harbro Auto Sales and Service, a local family owned and operated Pre-Owned car dealership, challenged the Public with one simple question “Will You be my Facebook Fan?” With the constant and ever growing changes in Facebook algorithms, and in an effort to stay connected Harbro Auto set up a goal to reach 400 Facebook fans by January 1, 2014, by setting up a social media contest.

Through social media “shares” and “likes,” new and existing Facebook fans could participate in a contest against the clock for a $100 gas card.

The catch? Harbro Auto had to hit 400 Facebook fans minimum, within 12 days in order for there to be a winner.

Participates could share the contest post from Harbro’s Facebook page as many times as they wished, and each “share” counted as an entry into the drawing for the $100 Gas Card, while each “like” counted for 1 entry. The more participants pushed the contest the better chance they had of winning.

By January 1st Harbro hit a whopping 405 Facebook Fans over-exceeding the goal and ringing in the New Year with a bang. Comprising all the entries together, through a random draw the winner was loyal fan J. Each sculpture weighs between 500 and 700 pounds, and the entire process was done with no more machinery than a shovel. To ensure their stability, the Plaza’s stone tiles needed to be removed and each form needed to be placed in a hole about 18 inches deep before being packed with dirt and rock sand.

While most of the sculptures have a rough bronze exterior, “Vanity” alone is a polished bronze form, centrally positioned between the other four. “In the

narrative of my installations, each character is an icon for an emotional or physical state, or for an action,” comments Swearer. “More important than the individual, is their integration into groupings.”

As with every installation, Swearer hopes this arrangement of figures conveys something emotionally unique to visitors of the Plaza. Alternatives will be hosting the sculptures until spring of this year, so there is plenty of time for the public to make their acquaintance.

artist michael rogan of Barre, who was awarded first prize in alternatives’ premiere Blackstone Valley Plein air competition recently returned to the Whitin mill. mr. rogan presented alternatives and several of the individuals the organization serves with paintings he created as gifts. alternatives provides services to people with psychiatric or developmental disabilities throughout central mass. and sponsors community events, like the Plein air competition, that people of all abilities can enjoy together.

Mendon's Oldest Resident at 97

the uxbridge Senior center ushered in the new Year at their new Years at noon luncheon with special guests liam morowski, cullen morowski and laurel douglas, ballroom dance students from the Fred astaire dance Studio in Worcester. liam, cullen & laurel choreographed and performed several numbers including the cha cha cha, a lively Swing and Waltz. a good time was had by all and we look forward to their return in the spring!

In mid-december Helen Berard not only celebrated her 97th birthday, she became distinguished as Mendon's oldest resident, receiving the senior center's "golden cane." On Sunday, december 15th she graciously accepted the honor bestowed

by Council on Aging Chairman Jim Negri and Senior Center director Amy Wilson Kent surrounded by her family. Five of her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and close family friend Reverend Carl Fisette attended the party organized

by Helen's daughters and sons-inlaw, Jean and Rene demers and Suzanne and John Lauzon.

Helen was born in Cumberland, RI and raised in nearby Woonsocket.

She and her late husband Ernest Berard made their summer home in Mendon fifty-two years ago and seventeen later established their full time residence here. Helen and her family have participated in many senior center and Friends programs over the years. And as such we couldn't be more pleased than to congratulate her for this special honor.

Theodora “Nana” Evangelidis Celebrates 100th Birthday Theodora "nana" evangelidis turned 100 years old on January 11th, 2014, helping her celebrate the occasion was her grandson Worcester County sheriff Lew evangelidis as well as her extended family. Theodora's husband Louis moved to east Douglas in 1914 from greece and brought his wife Theodora back to america in 1934, their boys george, Paul and Kasma were born and raised in Douglas on a street. Theodora worked in the shuster Mills for several decades as a loom operator.

~Society ~ Claflin Hill Orchestra goes “Fab” The Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra will present its second annual special “Winter Pops Gala Benefit Concert” on Saturday, February 8th, at the Portuguese Club in Milford. Tickets are $50 each, and include an hors d’ouerves buffet provided by the Blackstone Valley Tech Culinary Shop. doors open at 7 PM, and the two hour concert begins at 7:30 PM. Seating will be at tables of 10.

For this special performance, the orchestra will be joined by the popular Beatles Tribute Band, “HELP!” and together they will perform an entire evening of music from the Beatles discography, ranging from the early acoustic years to the innovative sounds from the Magical Mystery Tour, Sergeant Pepper, and Hey Jude albums, when the Fab Four began experimenting with orchestral sounds in their studio recording projects under George Martin.

All recreations of the orchestra arrangements are being written by Berklee School of Music Professor Jerry Seeco, a legendary jazz musician and arranger who resides in Milford, and has frequently collaborated with Claflin Hill.

“This concert concept is one that has been floating around in my head for almost a decade now,” said Paul Surapine, Claflin Hill’s Founder and Artistic director. “The musicians in the Beatles band HELP! have been a regular featured act on our “Family Night at the Bandstand” summer concert series since 1998, and every year, we talk about someday joining the Beatles with the symphony. This year is the year we’re doing it!”

Claflin Hill is partnering with Blackstone Valley Technical High School’s Culinary Shop, under Chef Matt Williams, who will be preparing and serving an array of appetizers and light entrees.

The evening will also include a silent auction, and all proceeds benefit the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra and their extensive full year season of world class musical performances in Milford and Central Massachusetts and especially their Youth Outreach programming which now includes the Claflin Hill Youth Symphonies.

Students support local pantry Northbridge Elementary School Supports the Northbridge Food Pantry Now until February 7th, Northbridge Elementary School is hosting a "Red Food drive" to benefit the Northbridge Food Pantry. Students in kindergarten are collecting non-perishable foods, counting and placing items into groups

of 10 and graphing total amounts that will be collected in each classroom.

The goal is to try to collect 100 items in each classroom! In addition to supporting application of various math skills, this activity ties into the Random Acts of Kindness teaching theme.

BVT Students awarded Adams Scholarship Academic excellence on the high school level results in a tuition-free higher education option for dozens of Valley Tech students. As winners of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, a total of 74 BVT seniors will receive tuition waivers if they choose to enroll full-time in a Massachusetts public college or university. Each year, the Massachusetts department of Elementary and Secondary Education awards the scholarship to students who earned scores of Advanced and Proficient on grade 10 MCAS tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics (with at least one score of Advanced) and earned a combined score within the top 25 percent of their school district.

Students who accept the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship and enroll in a state university or college will receive a tuition-waiver for up to eight semesters, which must be completed within six years of the recipient's high school graduation. Recipients must also maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.

“At Valley Tech, we stress students adopt an attitude of career readiness, including how to finance their postsecondary educational pursuits,” said Assistant Superintendent-director/ Principal Anthony Steele. “By excelling on their MCAS assessments in the spring of their sophomore year, they put themselves in a position to receive an Adams scholarship. Even though the award only covers tuition, it is still an incentive to our students and those across the Commonwealth.”

According to data on current tuition rates from the Massachusetts department of Secondary Education, recipients of the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship could benefit from an average four-year savings of nearly $3,000 at state community colleges, nearly $4,000 at state universities, and nearly $6,500 at the University of Massachusetts campuses.

Preschool Enrollment & Kindergarten Registration The Northbridge Public Schools district is pleased to announce preschool enrollment and kindergarten registration for the children who reside in the town of Northbridge. Preschool enrollment will take place from Feb. 1st-28th. The preschool program is an integrated program located at Northbridge Elementary School. The program serves 3 and 4 year old children.

The goal of the program is to build self-esteem, encourage creative thinking and develop social interaction. The classrooms are integrated and staffed with a Massachusetts certified teacher and teaching assistants. The selection process is a lottery based system. To enroll stop into the main office any time between 8:00-3:30 during the month of February or contact the school to get a copy of the brochure.

Registration for the 2014-2015 fullday Kindergarten Program will occur at Northbridge Elementary School on Wednesday, February 12th in the library, from 8:00 till 3:30. It is not necessary to have your child attend registration. Children must be 5 years of age on or before September 1, 2014 to be eligible for entry into kindergarten.

At the time of registration parents must present a birth certificate, most recent physical and an up-to-date immunization record. Prior to entering kindergarten, students must be immunized (call or go online for list).

For planning purposes, it is important that we have an accurate count of

Whitinsville Christian School’s Stepping Stone Preschool has recently undergone a period of tremendous growth, resulting in enrollment at capacity, the need for more space, a new class offering, and more staff. In the summer a building project knocked down walls, built new ones around a new bathroom, and gave the preschool the room it really needed. The additional 400 square feet enabled Stepping Stone students to have the space to sing and dance, to discover how classroom pets move, and to find quiet space for rest time in the afternoons. A new class was added this year for students to come to preschool full time, which

The lamps can provide a unique remembrance of a lost loved one and can be hand delivered for local services or delivered to a home. While meeting in the wedding room at 77 Blossom Shop, Joyce commented that “business is going very well.” Like all small business they have weathered the recent economic uncertainties and are looking forward to a stronger economy. “The wedding business has grown in leaps and bounds, “she said, “and we are a preferred wedding vendor at many local venues”. The showroom and production shop will be open at 3 pm and the skate park will be open for riders from 3 to 9 pm. Light refreshments and warm beverages will be served throughout the day.

A resting heart rate greater than 80 beats per minute is a strong predictor for future heart attacks, diabetes and even cancer. From 1974 to 2002, 53,322 healthy people were followed at the Cooper Clinic in dallas, Texas.

Those with a resting heart rate lower than 60 beats per minute were far less likely to suffer heart attacks or to die than those with a resting heart rate greater than 80 beats per minute (Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 12/12/2013) Another study found that men with resting heart rates greater than 73 beats per minute are 140 percent more likely to die from cancer than those with resting heart rates of less than 60 beats per minute (PLoS ONE, published online August 03, 2011).

Among 6,101 French men who were followed for 25 years, the chances of developing cancer rose with increasing heart rates. Compared to the group with resting heart rates of less than 60 beats per minute, those with: • 60-73 beats per minute increased cancer risk by 60 percent • Greater than 73 beats per minute increased cancer risk 140 percent. doctors often prescribe drugs to slow a rapid heartbeat, but the best way to lower your resting heart rate is by exercising to make your heart stronger. A stronger heart pumps more blood with each beat so it does not have to beat as often. The harder you exercise, the more you can lower your heart rate. In one study, 58 obese men and women exercised five times a week at 70 percent of maximum heart rate for 45 minutes. In just 12 weeks they lowered their resting heart rates by five to nine beats per minute (Br J Sports Med 2009; 43: 924-927).

People who exercise regularly have longer telomeres. The longer your telomeres, the less likely you are to develop cancer. A telomere is the end cap of a chromosome that protects it from being destroyed when a cell reproduces. Exercise also helps to protect the body from inflammation, in which the body uses its mechanisms for killing germs to destroy the body itself. The more intensely you exercise, the lower the heart rate and the greater the protection against inflammation which can lead to cancer. Also by lowering your heart rate by 10 beats per minute thru exercise you can save 6 million beats + yearly, that's 60 million beats + per 10 years that your heart does not have to beat.

That means your heart can work less, but still distribute blood to all body components as needed. How can you "BEAT" that?

Virtual Giving Tree brightens holiday When you think about all the folks in our towns, our communities, that are struggling, it can seem overwhelming to think that just one person can make a difference..or that the issues are too big to even know where to start. But, for the people in the community of Whitinsville, they were able to do just that.

Susan Ann Smith, Founder of The Virtual Giving Tree, started this venture with the mission to make sure that each Senior Citizen in her community had a gift under their tree for Christmas. She was inspired by a Giving Tree

she found for Senior Citizens a couple years back in Sturbridge. She always participates in Giving Trees for needy children but had never seen one for Seniors before that or has not seen one since. She admits that Seniors were never in the front of her mind for Christmas, not that she didn’t have concerns for them, but this piece of the community is not generally spoken of at the holidays and she felt she might be able to do something to change that!

After all, most are struggling for medications, heat, housing and food. Our Seniors are usually low income with very little family support. They live alone and don’t think of themselves when it comes to buying or asking for gifts for themselves. Even in the shop she

found in Sturbridge, the store owner told Susan what a hard time they had even getting folks to ask for anything for Christmas, they are just too proud to ask for help. Even some of the gift tags she saw for them were for just basic things that you and I take for granted each day.

After many calls spreading their message, the community started to rally. Although Susan couldn’t find a business on such short notice to house her personal tree,which was the original plan, a much better resolution surfaced. Four businesses in town agreed to Host the First Annual Senior Giving Trees:Harry’s Pizza and Milford Federal Bank allowed Susan to place a small counter top tree in each location and

The Whitin Community Center and The Whitinsville Library allowed her to use their trees they display each year to hang her Senior Tags. Folks were excited to help!

Now, the next step was to find Seniors who would step forward and ask for help. That would be the bigger challenge.

Susan contacted numerous Senior Centers in her community asking if they would like to participate. Surprisingly, she was met with a lot of resistance. Flat out “NO’s” or more stories of how this group of folks are too proud to speak up for help even though most are in dire need.

That was until she found Kelly Bol and Jennifer deluca from The Northbridge Senior Center on the other end of the phone. They were excited about the venture. Quickly brainstorming how to get around all the resistance and obstacles; Susan had been hit with in trying to push this forward. To alleviate the hurdle of their Seniors resisting asking for help, they decided to have a little fun and tell them that a Secret Santa had stepped forward and wanted to know what their 3 wishes were for Christmas and with their dessert Social coming up on dec 16th, the race to pull this together would be tight but they went for it and it worked!

Within the week, The Virtual Giving Tree had a list of 43 Seniors who had filled out their Wish Lists. And this list was just as heartbreaking as the gift tags Susan had seen in the past. One Senior asked for a bag of apples, two ladies asked for safe step stools, and another asked for a new phone (not cell phone..but a new wall phone!) How cute is that?! In addition, there were numerous wishes for hats, gloves, blankets, nightgowns, gift cards for food and medications, slippers, jackets, winter boots, and many more for simple basic necessities.

The Virtual Giving Tree launched with a website accepting donations, a presence on Facebook, 4 Senior Giving Trees in the community and over 125 Gifts Tags hanging.

On day 1, the VGT displayed 5 of the Senior Giving Tags on Facebook and they were all filled within 2 hours; starting on day 2, they starting displaying 10 Tags per day rotating each Senior to ensure each one would receive at least one gift under their tree. This continued through Friday dec 13th to give the VGT and the Northbridge Senior Center time to organize and wrap all the gifts in time for their Event.

Halfway through the 13 days of Giving, Susan changed up the Hosting Trees with duplicates of Senior Tags for Basic Needs to be able to help those that had not stepped forward for help or any of those needing help throughout the winter.

Susan stopped into each location weekly and was continuously needing to replenish them..The results were amazing!

By dec 13th, The Virtual Giving Tree wrapped over 225 gifts! Because of this giving community, who not only helped in filling their selected Tags, but also donated countless extras. For example, if someone selected a Tag for a blanket, they delivered two or three blankets!

They collected $1050 in donations through their website in just under two weeks. Each Senior Tag was filled and The Northbridge Senior Center was even able to present 15 Seniors with Gifts on the day of their Social that weren’t able to fill out Wish Lists due to illnesses or weren’t present at the time. By dec 16th, their goals were met..

But the generosity of this community didn’t stop there. The Hosting businesses agreed to extend the Giving Trees thru dec 30th to help build a surplus for any Seniors in need. The Virtual Giving Tree has continued to gather $1000 in additional GCards since their Event on dec 16th.

This generation has fought in wars, raised their families, worked their whole lives and are struggling to keep a roof over their heads, food on their tables, and to simply stay warm this winter. The benefits allowed to them are slim and are continuing to be cut. The Virtual Giving Tree is so grateful for the support of the community, donations from friends and family and unconditional generosity from folks they had never met from all over the country. You’ve all helped make so many Seniors’ Holidays a little more joyous this year!
