Stay Informed The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is offering free pesticide collection!

Free Pesticide Collection!

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) is holding a free Pesticide Collection event on Saturday, June 13, 2020, from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at the NEMO Fairgrounds, 2700 E. Illinois St., in Kirksville. MoDNR will accept all pesticides, including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, dewormers, fly tags, and fertilizer containing pesticides. Pesticides from businesses will not be accepted.

Be sure to safely transport your waste pesticides to the event by wearing nitrile or chemical resistant gloves, keep waste pesticides in original containers, ensure lids are tightly sealed, secure them upright in a cardboard box during transport, transport them in the back of a truck or the trunk of a car, and ensure flammables are out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat.

Mowing Season is Here Here’s the City’s rule as it relates to grass: it is every property owner’s responsibility to maintain their property, and that includes the mowing of your grass. City Code requires that grass, weeds or obnoxious growths shall not exceed 8 inches above the ground. Everyone who owns property in the City is responsible for keeping the grass and weeds down in their yards and to the center line of any alleyway, if applicable.

If you see a property not in compliance, please let us know by using the Citizen Service Request tool on the City website at www.kirksvillecity.com/submit-service-request. We will reach out to the occupants and / or property owner. These individuals will receive a notice of violation that includes a compliance date. Keep Grass Clippings Off The Streets!

Now that the summer mowing season is here, we want to remind residents and landscapers to keep grass clippings off the streets and out of the City’s storm drains. Blowing grass and other yard debris onto the sidewalk, street, or stormwater system is a violation of the Municipal Code, and a danger to others.

Grass clippings, leaves, and other lawn debris can clog stormwater drains, resulting in flooding, and add unnecessary biological matter to our stormwater system. In addition to environmental harm, you may be creating a safety hazard. When blown into the street, clippings can create a slippery and dangerous surface for traveling motorcyclists and bicyclists.

Using a mulching mower puts clippings back into the turf and keeps the grass where it belongs. If you have a side discharge mower, please be sure to point the blower toward your property (away from the street) to prevent clippings from leaving the lawn. You may also choose to bag your clippings, but they may not be disposed of in your regular trash containers. Residents are encouraged to compost clippings on their property or take them to the City Brush Site, located at 22376 State Highway 6.

Be Sure to License Your Pets!

Be sure to license your pets! A license is free of charge and required for any animal four months of age or older. A license is good for one year and can be obtained at the Police Station, located at 119 E. McPherson St. For more information, contact the Police Department at 660.785.6945.
