Would you like to help solve the problems in our community instead of scrolling through complaints on social media? Have you seen a pothole or two, tall weeds, drainage problems, grass blown on the street, or some other issue that you want addressed, but you aren’t sure how to do so? Well, you’ll be happy to learn it’s as easy as using your smartphone!

Simply visit kirksvillecity.com on your smartphone, scroll halfway down the City’s mobile-friendly webpage, and click “Submit Request” in the Citizen Service Request section! On the next page, click “Submit a Service Request” and follow the on-screen prompts to report a problem! This process ensures the issue is brought to the attention of the appropriate City department and that the issue is addressed. You can even ask to be sent status updates regarding your issue via email, text message, or telephone call.

Prevent Water Backflow into Your Home Does your home have a backflow prevention device? Water is normally maintained at a significant pressure to enable water to flow in your household from the tap, shower, etc. However, if that changes, a backflow prevention device will protect your water system from contamination.

You can also install a backflow prevention device for your sewer. In the event of a sewer backup, this device will allow water and other materials to escape from the cleanout rather than flow into your home. This simple device can prevent both damage to your home and the subsequent property cleanup.

Stop Sewer Blockages

You can stop costly, and potentially unhealthy, sewer blockages in your home by being “Sewer Smart!” Here is a list of eleven items you should NEVER flush down your toilet:

1. Bathroom wipes: These wipes create clogs and backups in sewer systems.

2. Condoms: Latex prophylactics are like kryptonite for sewage treatment plants.

3. Cotton Balls & Swabs: They gather together causing massive blockages.

4. Prescription Medication: These drugs destroy bacteria, contaminate ground-water supplies, and can have terrible effects on wildlife downstream.

5. Paper towels: These are NOT designed to break down in water like toilet paper.

6. Cigarette butts: They’re full of incredibly toxic chemicals.

7. Band-Aids: These are made from non-biodegradable plastic.

8. Dental floss: Despite feeling like string, dental floss is not biodegradable.

9. Fats, oil, and grease: Cooking fats should NEVER go in the drain or garbage disposal. It seems like a liquid when it’s hot, but as soon as this grease hits the drain, it cools and congeals, becoming pipe-clogging wax.

10. Cat litter: Cat litter is made from clay and sand, two things that should NEVER be put down a toilet.

11. Disposable diapers: Diapers are made from toxic plastic which is designed to expand when it comes in contact with water.

Do your part to “Be Sewer Smart!” Remember: the water that leaves the wastewater treatment plant becomes drinking water downstream!

Wading Pools—What Do You Think?

The City made the tough decision to close the Jaycee Park wading pool due to decreasing attendance, the cost to repair the pool, and the opening of the new Aquatic Center. The P.C. Mills and Brashear Park wading pools remain open.
