Dear Patron Not so ancient and very modern all here at the Kings. It only seems like yesterday when the Kings Theatre’s future was looking very bleak, but almost ten years down the line and here we are, a thriving, updated entertainment venue with constantly improving facilities attracting the big productions. Frank Matcham would be suitably impressed by the way his 1907 Edwardian theatre is moving into the 21st century. You only have to look at the theatre now as it stands proudly on the corner of Albert Road and Exmouth Road to see the changes and know that the whole area is alive and buzzing with activity, thanks to the hard work of Albert Road Traders Association and all those who have been involved in bringing Albert Road to the fore. The Kings Theatre is no exception, with Aurora shining her light of welcome and the restoration recreating the atmosphere that has made the theatre a landmark for 103 years!
Musical theatre, cinema, opera, ballet, dance, comedy, bands, talks, the whole range of attractions to suit all tastes and wishes, are all available at the Kings in this new autumn season. Old favourites and new shows are here for you to choose from in this brochure. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s Tell Me on a Sunday starring Claire Sweeney charting the romantic misadventures of a young English girl in New York, brings the West End once more to Portsmouth in October and Christmas sees the return of our family pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk. Along with all the vibrant activities in education, community and development, The Kings Theatre is playing its part in revitalising the entertainment and the arts in Portsmouth. Be a part of it and see you here. David Cooper General Manager
