Shovels on the ground at last for Farranfore–Killarney road

There was a major development this week in the long-awaited N22 Farranfore to Killarney Bypass Project, as topographical surveys began along the preferred route — marking the first visible step towards delivering the long-discussed road scheme.

The works are being carried out by Murphy Geospatial Ltd, who have been appointed by Kerry County Council to complete the surveys. The work began in Farranfore earlier this week and will move gradually toward Killarney over the coming weeks.

According to the Council, the surveys will cover both greenfield areas along the preferred corridor and sections of the existing N22 and adjoining local roads. These topographical studies will map the area in detail and are expected to take around three weeks to complete.

While the activity has been long anticipated, Kerry County Council officials have assured the public that there will be minimal traffic disruption while the survey work is taking place.

Director of Services Frank Hartnett told councillors that this is only the beginning of several key stages due to take place before the end of the year. He confirmed that ground investigation works — the next major phase of the project — will begin on November 3, under a six-month contract.

CLEAR TIMELINE

The progress update was given during Monday’s full meeting of Kerry County Council, following a motion tabled by Killarney-based councillor John O’Donoghue (Kerry Independent Alliance).

Cllr O’Donoghue sought a clear timeline for the long-awaited bypass, asking if construction could begin in 2026, and highlighting the ongoing strain caused by traffic congestion in Killarney.

“This issue has appeared on the agenda at nearly every council meeting I’ve attended,” said Cllr O’Donoghue. “The traffic congestion in Killarney is now an almost year-round issue and needs to be addressed urgently.”

He said that while the new road won’t solve every transport problem, it will significantly reduce pressure on the town centre.

“The bypass is not a silver bullet that will

solve everything. Killarney will always be a desirable place to live, work, and visit but it will have a colossal impact on reducing traffic and improving the quality of life for everyone in the town,” he added.

He also paid tribute to council engineers and the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) team for bringing the project to this stage and called for continued urgency to keep progress on track.

The Council confirmed that Phase 3 design and environmental evaluation work is underway and will continue into 2026. The statutory planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála is expected to be submitted in 2027. Engagement with local landowners along the proposed route is also taking place.

Meanwhile, both Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae TD and Cllr Jackie HealyRae welcomed confirmation that the project is fully funded for its current stages, with a total allocation of €3 million for 2025.

MAJOR INVESTMENT

The funding arrangement was outlined at Monday’s meeting, where Mr Hartnett confirmed that €1 million will come directly from the Department of Transport, while an additional €2 million will be advanced by Kerry County Council and later reimbursed by TII in 2026.

“This bypass is a key part of the Kerry–Cork Economic Corridor. The work

underway, including topographical surveys and ground investigation works starting on November 3rd, is absolutely essential to move into the planning and design phase. You can’t pour concrete before the groundworks, surveys and planning are done. This funding is real, it’s happening, and it’s how we get to the next stage and secure the major investment that will follow.”said Minister Healy-Rae.

Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae added that the allocation ensures the project stays on schedule through 2025. “This is practical, joined-up work behind the scenes to keep the bypass moving forward,”

he said.

The bypass forms part of the wider Kerry–Cork Economic Corridor, which aims to improve connectivity between the counties and relieve traffic bottlenecks through Killarney and Farranfore. When completed, the N22 Farranfore–Killarney Bypass will not only shorten journey times between Cork and Tralee but also enhance safety and support regional economic growth by providing a more efficient route for residents, tourists, and businesses.

For now, though, the sight of engineers and survey crews along the route marks a long-awaited milestone.

Mayor calls for return of Killarney’s second ambulance

Killarney Mayor Councillor Martin Grady has renewed calls for the return of the town’s second ambulance, saying current cover is not enough to meet the needs of residents and visitors.

Speaking at the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr Grady tabled a motion calling on Kerry County Council to write to the HSE seeking a Needs Analysis Assessment of the ambulance service across the county.

He told the meeting that Killarney lost its second ambulance 13 years ago and that it has not been replaced, despite a 17% rise in ambulance callouts over the past two years.

“It’s simply not good enough for a busy and growing area like Killarney to have only one ambulance,” he said. “People’s lives and safety depend on a fast response — we need our second ambulance back.”

Cllr Grady said Kerry’s population continues to grow and that front-line emergency services must expand to match the demand.

“I want to commend our hardworking ambulance staff in the county for the tremendous work they do every day,”

Concerns grow as new hospital still awaits opening

Almost a year after its scheduled opening date, the new Killarney Community Nursing Unit remains unopened, prompting growing frustration among councillors, local representatives, and families across Kerry.

The €30 million facility, located on the grounds of St Finan’s, was originally due to open in December 2024. However, despite being fully constructed, the building has not yet been handed over to the HSE.

The delay was raised again at this week’s meeting of Kerry County Council, where Cllr. Brendan Cronin tabled a motion calling for the HSE to publicly clarify the situation.

Cllr. Cronin’s motion read:

“To call on the HSE to publicly clarify the unacceptable situation where families with elderly relatives requiring long-term nursing home care are being offered beds in homes outside Kerry while a newly built 130-bed facility in Killarney remains unopened and gathering dust.”

He said the ongoing delays were “unacceptable” and that the lack of communication from the HSE was adding to public frustration.

The HSE has stated that residents from the older buildings at Killarney Community Hospital and St Columbanus’ Home will be moved to the new facility next year, but this is more than a year after the promised opening date.

too long.

Cllr. Cronin said families across Kerry are frustrated that people in need of long-term care are being offered places outside the county while the stateof-the-art Killarney unit sits unused.

“There are families whose loved ones have had to move to homes in Cork and Limerick. That’s not acceptable when we have a brand-new 130-bed facility here in Killarney,” he said.

ISSUE RAISED IN THE DÁIL

The issue was also raised in the Dáil this week by Kerry TD Danny HealyRae, who called on the Minister for Health and the HSE to explain the ongoing hold-up.

Deputy Healy-Rae told the Dáil that the delay in opening the new facility is now holding up other important healthcare projects in the Killarney area.

“In Killarney, we have a new district hospital. It is built,” he said.

“When is it going to open? So much else is dependent on it. We need a new Primary Care Centre in Killarney, and the grounds are there. But until the old district hospital and St. Columbanus Home are vacated and incorporated into the new hospital, those projects can’t move forward.”

He also highlighted the need for a Minor Injuries Clinic in Killarney, which he said is being delayed as a result.

“At times, there could be up to 10,000 people in Killarney during the summer.

he said. “But response times can vary because of distance, hospital turnaround times, call volumes, staffing and resource limitations. All of these put the service under pressure.”

He noted that there are currently six ambulance bases in Kerry, with a part-time daytime dispatch base planned for Killorglin, but said this is not enough.

“Killarney’s population doubles during the summer months,” he added. “There have been cases where Kerry ambulances have spent their entire shift in neighbouring counties, leaving their own areas exposed without cover. We need a full review of the service in Kerry, and budget constraints cannot be a barrier when it comes to health.”

His motion was supported by other councillors, who agreed that ambulance resources across the county should be reviewed to ensure sufficient cover for all areas.

According to the HSE, the delay is linked to the final inspection process and sign-off requirements before the building can be formally handed over and occupied. However, councillors say that process has now gone on far

The pressure on University Hospital Kerry’s Emergency Department could be eased significantly if we had a Minor Injuries Clinic here,” he said.

“We’re asking seriously for this to be prioritised.”

CCTV Scheme for Killarney still on the long finger

The long-promised public CCTV system for Killarney remains stalled, with no start date in sight, despite funding being approved earlier this year.

At Monday’s meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Tom Barry (Listowel Municipal District) raised the issue again, seeking clarity on when the long-awaited Killarney CCTV project will finally begin.

Cllr Barry, who is monitoring the Killarney project closely as a model for rolling out similar systems elsewhere in the county, asked the council to arrange a meeting between An Garda Síochána and the council’s Data Protection Officer to progress the matter.

He said that only through direct engagement could the necessary Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) be completed and the project finally move forward.

However, the official response from the council offered little reassurance or any sense of urgency.

The reply stated:

“There has been considerable engagement between all stakeholders in relation to CCTV and, in particular, the preparation of a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) for the Killarney Town Centre CCTV scheme. The final approval to that DPIA is awaited, and Kerry County Council will continue to

work with partners to reiterate the importance of this.”

No commencement date, project timeline, or installation schedule was provided.

In July of this year, funding was formally approved for the long-promised Killarney. CCTV scheme.

At that time, Kerry County Council confirmed that the Killarney project could proceed as soon as An Garda Síochána provided final sign-off.

However, three months later, there has been no visible progress on the ground, no update from Garda Headquarters, and no indication of when approval might be granted.

The CCTV initiative, which has been discussed at multiple council meetings over several years, is designed to enhance public safety, deter antisocial behaviour, and assist gardaí in investigating crimes in busy areas such as Killarney’s town centre and nightlife zones.

The absence of CCTV in the town centre has been a long-standing frustration for both councillors and business owners, particularly given Killarney’s status as one of the country’s busiest tourist towns.

Killarney man appointed to Tourism Ireland Board

Killarney businessman Pat O’Leary, chair of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, has been appointed as a director to the board of Tourism Ireland, the body responsible for marketing the island overseas as a holiday destination.

The appointment was approved at a North South Ministerial Council meeting on 17 October 2025, alongside fellow new board member Des Annett. Ruth Andrews and Stephen McNally were reappointed for a further term.

Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Peter Burke, welcomed the appointments, saying:

"I am delighted to welcome two new appointees, Pat O’Leary and Des Annett, to the Board of Tourism Ireland and warmly congratulate them on their appointments. I wish the members well as they undertake important roles in supporting the tourism industry on the island of Ireland."

Pat O’Leary, who retired as managing

director of Liebherr Container Cranes, became chair of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation in January 2020. The Federation was formed from a countywide forum of tourism employers and businesspeople, aiming to strengthen collaboration across the sector.

Don’t forget to change your clocks on Sunday morning

It’s officially winter! The clocks are going back by one hour this weekend, giving us an extra hour in bed and shorter evenings.

This year the clocks will go back an hour on Sunday, October 26 at 2am. This means that sunrise and sunset will be an hour earlier than the day before, bringing brighter mornings and darker evenings.

Every year there are several calls to stop the time change. In 2019, the European Parliament voted to remove daylight energy saving time permanently. The aim was to end seasonal time changes after Spring 2021. This was put on pause due to the pandemic.

MEP for Ireland South and Kilcummin native Seán Kelly has called on the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union to restart negotiations on ending the clock change.

Mr Kelly believes it is an outdated and unnecessary practise. He said: “Scientific evidence shows that switching the clocks twice a year disrupts sleep, increases health risks such as heart attacks, and even leads to more traffic accidents. The promised energy savings

have failed to materialise. It’s time we left it in the past and moved on.”

The current EU Directive requires Member States to move their clocks forward by one hour on the last Sunday in March and back again on the last Sunday in October each year. The Commission’s 2018 proposal would allow each Member State to choose whether to remain permanently on summer or standard time

The European Commission proposed to discontinue seasonal time changes in 2018 following a public consultation that received 4.6 million responses with 84% of respondents in favour of ending the clock change.

Brewing Distillery building up for sale

Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company has been put up for sale following its sudden closure during the summer.

The property is listed on Daft.ie with the price available on the application form. Described as a state-of-the-art brewery and distillery campus, the building is suited to hospitality, venue hire, warehouse and visitor centre use.

Facilities include a fully fitted kitchen, bar and restaurant, seating for 250 guests, and a gala event space. Additional attractions include a fully fitted visitor centre,

café, gift shop and roof top terrace. Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company had been in examinership since April. A planned merger with a US-based investor fell through earlier this year, and no new investment was secured during the court-mandated restructuring window. In a statement, the company cited a combination of COVID-related setbacks, delays in opening its Fossa distillery, rising costs, and global economic uncertainty for its closure. “Despite the best efforts of all involved, the process did not result in a successful investment outcome,” it said.

Healy-Rae and Cahill clash over Pretty Polly funding

A war of words has broken out between Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae and Fianna Fáil TD Michael Cahill over claims that funding has been “secured” for the purchase of the former Pretty Polly site in Killarney.

Minister Healy-Rae accused Deputy Cahill of “jumping the gun” after the Fianna Fáil TD publicly stated that Kerry ETB had received funding to buy the 7.91-acre site for €2.375 million. Healy-Rae said only approval for Kerry ETB to begin price negotiations and due diligence had been granted, not full funding.

“Deputy Cahill should get his facts

straight,” Minister Healy-Rae said. “Progress must be reported accurately. Announcing funding that hasn’t been secured is misleading and unhelpful.”

In response, Deputy Cahill said HealyRae’s “nose seems to be out of joint” and insisted that his information was correct.

“The facts of the matter are that the funding has been secured,” he said, crediting Minister James Lawless for signing off on the allocation.

Deputy Cahill added that he has “worked long and hard” to progress the project, while Minister Healy-Rae maintained that “facts, not headlines” should guide public discussion on major local projects

Safety Concerns raised over Loo Bridge junction – again

At Monday’s meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Maura Healy-Rae tabled a Motion highlighting continuing safety issues at the junction of the N22 (Kenmare Road) and the turn-off for Loo Bridge near Killarney.

In her motion Cllr Healy-Rae asked the council and the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to “examine the safety of Loo Bridge Junction on the N22 and to explore the implementation of further safety measures. Notwithstanding previous measures that have taken place, accidents and collisions continue to occur at this location on a regular basis.” The junction has been described as an “accident black-spot off the main Kerry–Cork road,” and flagged as a high-risk location for some time.

Despite the installation of advance-warning signs and flashing lights, local residents and councillors remained

deeply concerned about the junction’s visibility and vehicle speeds.

In reply to the motion, a council official confirmed that the junction’s performance is being reviewed in cooperation with the TII’s Safety Section. The reply stated that further intervention measures are being planned, which will include improved junction definition and measures to promote speed reduction on the N22.

While this confirms action is under way, no firm timeline for the implementation of these additional safety measures was included in the council’s response.

November 10 deadline for Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Time is running out for those wishing to take part in this year’s Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal, with the final collection date set for November 10.

The annual appeal brings joy to vulnerable children in Africa and Eastern Europe by sending shoeboxes filled with small gifts such as toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and sweets.

Local coordinator Sheila Rice is encouraging schools, businesses, community groups, and individuals across the Killar-

ney area to get involved.

“Every shoebox makes a difference,” said Sheila. “It’s a simple gesture that can bring immense joy to a child in need.”

Since it began in 2010, Irish communities have sent over 2.8 million shoebox gifts through Team Hope to children living in poverty. For many, this is the only gift they will receive at Christmas.

Donations of small, clean toys, costume jewellery, or soft teddies that would fit into a shoebox are also welcome.

Annual Killarney Ploughing Match set for November 9

The annual Killarney Ploughing Match will take place on Sunday, 9 November at Coffey’s Farm, Fossa.

This year, a unique situation has arisen, with three members of the same family set to take part in the event. Tony Wharton, chairman of the Killarney Ploughing Club, will compete in the senior ploughing class. His son, Ryan Wharton, will compete under the Macra na Feirme banner, while Tony’s brother, Thomas Whar-

ton, will act as mentor to the pair. “Three members in the one team of the same family has never happened in Killarney ploughing before,” said Tony Wharton.

The Killarney match is the final event of the Kerry ploughing season. Tony expressed hope that Ryan will qualify for the All-Ireland Ploughing Finals in Tullamore next year, which would make him the first Killarney member to reach the national final.

Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone (KFMN) was one of seven local charities to receive funding from Ballybunion Golf Club Lady Captain Mags O’Sullivan’s Charity Golf Classic.

At a presentation on October 5, Mags O’Sullivan donated €5,000 to KFMN at Ballybunion Golf Club.

The donation was made in memory of her late friend Angela Fahy, a former Lady Captain and President of the club, who passed away from Motor Neurone

Disease.

Pat Kelleher and Christy Lehane accepted the cheque on behalf of KFMN and thanked Mags, Lady President Aideen O’Leary, and the organising committee for their generosity and hospitality.

He said the donation will provide vital support for the charity’s ongoing work assisting those living with Motor Neurone Disease in Kerry.

“Fundraising is becoming increasingly difficult, so this contribution makes a real difference,” he said.

Nature lovers flock to National Park for ‘Samhain’ Gathering

Killarney National Park hosted another successful ‘Samhain’ Autumn Gathering at the weekend, attracting large crowds of nature enthusiasts eager to experience the sights and sounds of the rutting season.

The popular event, organised by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, featured early morning dawn walks through Knockreer Estate, led by Conservation Ranger Padruig O’Sullivan. Starting at 7am on both Saturday and Sunday, visitors gathered to catch a glimpse of the park’s red deer during the height of their annual rut.

The ‘Meet the Rangers’ sessions also proved to be a big draw. Conservation Rangers Michael McSweeney, Trisha Beecher, Chris Barron and Tim Cahalane were on hand to answer questions and guide visitors in spotting wildlife using telescopes and binoculars. Talks held at Killarney House by Ecologist Clare Heardman and Conservation Ranger Bríd Calhoun attracted strong attendance. Both presentations explored the park’s wildlife, habitats, and conservation work, with plenty of audi-

ence engagement and discussion. The weekend-long event once again highlighted the growing public interest in Killarney’s natural heritage and provided an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the work of those who protect and manage the National Park.

My name is Luke Mangan.

I am 16 years old and I attend Presentation Secondary School in Milltown. My favourite subject is English, and I have a passion for Shakespeare.

Last weekend, the MEK Galaxy U14 girls made all the county proud. They brought European silverware back to the Kingdom by winning a prestigious U14 competition in Barcelona. They did this by competing against youth teams from across Europe, including 22 other Irish teams. The outstanding squad of 15, whom they all hailed from Fossa, Listry, Firies, Milltown, Ballyhar and Killorglin, travelled to Barcelona with coaches Tony and Jo Harty and Nuala Quigg to compete against the top talented adolescent squads from the continent.

MEK’s first test was in the group stage when they faced IFK Stocksund, hailing from Finland. This was a convincing 3-0 win for the Irish girls with Ava Harty, Alannah Daly and Grace Ryan each converting once to seal a win.

The girls from Kerry continued their impressive form when they beat Spanish

Galaxy Girls set Barcelona alight with football delight

side TFC in their second group game. The goals came from Alanah Daly, Isabelle O’Connor, Sinead Curran, and Ava O’Sullivan who played through injury but incredibly scored a brace. Within the first two games, this talented set of players scored eight goals, and had six different goalscorers. This showed the team's superior talent and their versatile squad. Their final group match was a sturdy test as they faced Norwegian side SK Brann, but thankfully a draw was enough to see the Kerry natives get into the knockout stages, thanks to a savory goal from Ava Harty.

In the ‘A’ semi-final, Galaxy faced anther strong Norwegian opponent, this time being Tertnes IL. Both teams were unable to find a goal in normal time, so the match would be decided by a penalty shootout. Despite being under pressure, the girls managed to pull through and triumph by winning 5-4.

With only two hours to rest and recover, they were back in action for the final which was held in the Futbol Salou Arena. The girls faced one of Sweden’s best youth teams, Brommapojkarna IF. There was a huge crowd in attendance. The girls put out an incredible display of defensive and attacking football. At the end of 90 minutes, both teams were held to 0-0; this did not seem to faze the girls as they had already been in this position during the tournament earlier. The game would be decided by penalties, and Galaxy won the game in a comfortable 4-3 shootout. Goalkeeper, Saoirse Teahan pulled off two outstanding saves and Aoibhinn O’Flaherty scored the decisive goal, despite carrying an injury from the semi-final. MEK Galaxy U14 girls were then crowned champions of Barcelona.

Each member of the squad played superbly throughout the tournament, and

this was evidential throughout every game they played. Esmee Van Benthem was deservedly named as player of the tournament due to her exceptional performances.

Huge celebrations followed full time, and the girls were welcomed home by their families.

Action Hub consists of a series of six weekly Zoom sessions with ten participants in each and moderated by a host. Participants can feel supported by others like themselves in a safe space while benefiting from the structure that the programme provides.

Bishop Murphy's memories on Radio Kerry on Saturday

Every day since he returned to Killarney as a priest in 1979, Bishop Bill Murphy has marvelled at the view over Lough Leane, praying the same office that the monks of Innisfallen Island prayed more than a thousand years ago.

This is one of eight special places Bishop Bill will share with Frank Lewis on Radio Kerry’s Saturday Supplement on Saturday, October 25, from 9 to 11am. Bishop Bill recalls his early days in Killarney — when Johnny Healy and the boys from New Street gathered scraps of lead from the ruins of the old redbrick mansion to sell and buy a football.

As a young boy, Bishop Bill remembers fishing with his father and brother on the Owneycree River in Glenflesk, catching 33 trout in one day, each about a pound in weight. Mike Joe O’Keeffe, founder of the Owneycree Angling Club, remembers a salmon that jumped into low branches — and couldn’t be retrieved.

Paddy O’Donovan delivered 38 pounds — 608 sausages — every Tuesday and Thursday to St Brendan’s College, where Bishop Bill remembers football training once stopping as a man carrying a newborn baby climbed through the fence from the District Hospital.

Winner of four All-Ireland medals and two All-Stars, Donie Sullivan, then aged 13, and Bishop Bill, aged 15, both recall the awe they felt seeing Christy Ring play for Cork against Tipperary in the 1950 Munster Hurling Final at Fitzgerald Stadium — 75 years ago this year.

Michael Gleeson reflects on the unimaginable suffering of the children who died in Killarney Cathedral during the Famine. Bishop Bill recalls that when the cathedral spire was built between 1908 and 1912, the scaffolding stretched halfway back the Monastery Field.

Richie Clancy, then aged 15, cycled back to the post office with the race results after every race during the three-day Killarney Races. Bishop Bill names the Tomies–Purple–Shehy ridge as his favourite mountain walk in Killarney. He also recalls that working on the building of the Church of the Resurrection was easier because “a committee was in charge,” remembering those days with David Fleming, one of the committee members.

In his 64 years as sacristan in St Mary’s Cathedral, Tadgie Fleming witnessed big changes in funerals and baptisms. As part of Bishop Bill’s ordination as Bishop of Kerry, Fr Pat Ahern and members of the National Folk Theatre performed a stylised dance in which stones from all parts of the diocese were brought to the altar.

Bishop Bill Murphy will bring Frank Lewis to eight of his favourite places in Killarney on Saturday Supplement, October 25, from 9 to 11am.

Record crowds attend Kelliher’s Toyota Roadshow

Kelliher’s Toyota held its fourth Toyota Roadshow at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney on Sunday, and Dealer Principal Tim Kelliher described it as the best one yet.

The Gleneagle was packed throughout the day, with people calling in from early morning and a steady stream of visitors keeping trade brisk. Interest from the car-buying public was described as “very strong.”

It was the fourth time the popular event was staged at the Gleneagle, although it could have been five as last year’s show was cancelled because of Storm Debi.

One of the highlights this year was the official unveiling of the all-new Toyota Proace Max large van and the new-generation Toyota Land Cruiser. The Toyota GR Yaris also proved a major draw for visitors.

The event ran from 11am to 4pm and featured Toyota’s full line-up, including the Corolla Cross, the complete Corolla range, the Toyota C-HR, and both Yaris and Yaris Cross models.

Tim Kelliher said afterwards that the day was a huge success. “It was our busiest show yet. The level of interest in Toyota’s latest hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric models was exceptional,” he said.

Ballymac Vintage Club presents proceeds from car run

Ballymac Vintage Club was delighted to recently present the proceeds from its annual Tractor and Car Run to this year’s chosen beneficiaries — Clogher National School and COPD Support Ireland.

the local parish, while the cars took in a longer run through Currow, Cordal, and Castleisland, before all returning to The Halfway for refreshments and the raffle.

Paternity leave gives new parents 2 weeks off work. You can take time off if you are employed or self-employed and can start the leave any time in the first 6 months after the baby's birth. You can also take paternity leave when you adopt a child. Usually, fathers take paternity leave. Paternity leave is also available to same-sex couples.

For an adopted child, the relevant parent is the parent who is not the qualifying adopter for adoptive leave. This means one of you can take adoption leave and the other paternity leave. If you are adopting alone, you can take paternity leave if you are not taking adoptive leave.

Your employer does not have to pay you during paternity leave, but you may qualify for Paternity Benefit if you have enough PRSI contributions

What is parental leave?

Parental leave lets parents take unpaid leave from work to spend time looking after their children. You can take up to 26 weeks’ parental leave for each eligible child before their 12th birthday. If you work part-time, your entitlement to parental leave is reduced on a ‘pro-rata basis’. Generally, you must have been working for your employer for a year be-

€375 per week. Email lauraosullivan09@ gmail.com

fore you are entitled to parental leave. However, if your child is very near the age limit and you have been working for your employer for more than 3 months (but less than one year), you can take ‘pro-rata parental leave’. If your child has a disability or a long-term illness, you can take parental leave until they are 16 years of age.

What is parent’s leave?

Parent’s leave is a statutory entitlement for parents in employment or self-employment. It aims to let working parents spend more time with their baby or adopted child during the first two years. Each parent is entitled to 9 weeks leave for an eligible child.

You may also qualify for a payment called Parent’s Benefit during parent’s leave. It is paid while you are on parent’s leave from work if you have enough social insurance (PRSI) contributions. Your employer does not have to pay you while you are on parent’s leave, although some employers may ‘topup’ your parent’s leave- this is set out in your contract of employment. If you qualify for Parent’s Benefit, you will get €289 each week from the Department of Social Protection. To check the eligibility criteria for Parent’s Benefit, you should contact your local Citizens Information Centre.

What is Force Majeure Leave?

If you have a family crisis, you have a right to limited time off work. This is called force majeure leave. You may need to take force majeure leave for an urgent family reason, such as the unexpected injury or illness of a ‘close family member’. Close family member includes your child, your spouse or partner, your parent or grandparent, your sibling,

someone you have a duty of care for or someone who depends on you for care. You can take force majeure leave of one or more days up to a maximum of 3 days in 12 consecutive months, or a total of 5 days in 36 consecutive months (3 years). Depending on your employer and your contract of employment, you may be able to take more than this. You get paid while you are on force majeure leave. If your employer allows you to take additional force majeure leave, you should check if it is paid.

What is unpaid leave for medical

care?

Unpaid leave for medical care gives you 5 days unpaid leave if you need to take time off work to deal with serious medical care for a child or other relevant person like a family member. Your employer can request relevant evidence of the medical need for the leave. The leave is available to both parents and carers. You do not need any minimum service with your employer to take this leave. You don’t have to give your employer notice to take the leave in emergency circumstances. You should give notice if it’s possible to. Unpaid leave for medical care is different to force majeure leave, which is paid leave for an urgent family crisis.

IN MEMORIAM

3RD ANNIVERSARY

FAVIER

In loving memory of Dan Favier Curraglass, Glenflesk, Killarney whose 3rd Anniversary occurs on 7th November.

A smile for all, a heart of gold

One of the best this world could hold

Never selfish, always kind

These are the memories you left behind

Deep in our hearts you will always stay

Loved and remembered every day.

Lovingly remembered by your daughter Sinéad.

No farewells were spoken

We could not say goodbye

You were gone before we knew it

And only God knows why

They say there is a reason

They say time will heal

But neither time nor reason

Will change the way we feel.

Loved and missed by Danielle, Kieran, Ella and Chloé.

You always had a smile to share

A laugh, a joke, a time to care

A wonderful nature warm and true

These are the memories we have of you

Each of us in our own way

Have special thoughts of you today.

Loved and sadly missed by Ciarán, Edel, Jack, Emma and Sophie.

Our hearts are full of memories

With pride we speak your name

Though life must go on without you

It will never be the same

Those special days will not return

When we were all together

But the love and memories in our hearts

Will stay with us forever.

Loved and sadly missed by Paul, Corinna, Conall, Eanna and Seimí.

No special day is needed

For us to think of you

You are always in our thoughts

No matter what we do

You always had a smile to share

Time to give and time to care

Your loving nature

Your heart of gold

We are proud to hold.

Loved and sadly missed by Ollie, Siobhán, Gracie-Mai and Frankie.

Can Dingle end long wait for county glory?

Austin Stacks stand between westerners and the Bishop

KERRY SFC FINAL

Dingle v Austin Stacks

Sunday 1.45pm

Austin Stack Park Live on TG4

Kerry will crown new county champions on Sunday next as Dingle and Austin Stacks go head-to-head in the Kerry SFC final at Austin Stack Park, Tralee. For the second year in a row, we have an

all-club decider and, for the second year in a row, a black and amber opponent stands between Dingle and the Bishop Moynihan Trophy. Dr Crokes were the victors in 2025. Can the men from West Kerry return to the summit and claim the county’s top prize for the first time since 1948?

Stacks, meanwhile, will be hoping to add to their glorious past. They last won this title in 2021. That was their 13th – another triumph will once again draw them level with the Crokes at the top of the Kerry SFC honours list.

Also at stake is the honour of representing the Kingdom in the Munster Club Championship (and hopefully beyond). The winners will also select the Kerry senior captain for 2026. Joe O’Connor and Paul Geaney are possible candidates for the role, a role which was carried out admirably by Gavin White this past season.

Darragh Long’s Rockies will have to keep tabs on the five Geaneys if they are to reign supreme. Conor was the chief scorer versus Mid Kerry. Mark O’Connor, the powerful Geelong Cats player, will

pose problems too, as will Tom O’Sullivan.

Predicting the result is very difficult but Dingle should hold their own at midfield, and I think they have the better forwards with more potential to score. The Stacks are very good in defence and at midfield but do they have the spread of scoring forwards? They'll be depending a lot on Paddy Lane and O’Connor bursting through in search of a goal. I give the vote to Dingle to win and give us a long overdue rendering of ‘An Poc ar Buile’ on Sunday night.

Stylish Rockies slay the giant killers

Austin Stacks qualified in for the Kerry SFC final by defeating Rathmore with plenty to spare on Saturday, running out seven-point winners in Killarney.

Paddy Lane pointed an early free after a foul on Daniel Kirby, but Shane Ryan quickly replied for the side who dumped favourites East Kerry out of the competition in the quarters.

Rathmore then missed several chances before an important score arrived at the other end: a two-pointer pointer by a

man better known as a defender, Armin Heinrich.

To their credit, the East Kerry club kept coming back for more, especially through Ciarán Collins, and at half-time there was still only four points in it (Austin Stacks 0-8 Rathmore 0-4).

The Rock maintained control in the early stages of the second half with Kerry star Joe O’Connor and AFL-bound Ben Murphy very much to the fore.

In the end it was O’Connor’s goal that killed off Rathmore as he finished off a neat move in emphatic fashion. Final score at the Fitzgerald Stadium: Austin

WEST IS BEST

In the other semi-final in Tralee, Mid Kerry started well by kicking the opening two points, but then Dingle came roaring into it thanks in no small part to the influential Mark O'Connor.

O’Connor, on break from his AFL duties with Geelong, was making a sort of guest appearance for his native club. What an awful loss to the Kerry seniors he continues to be.

Normally it is Paul Geaney who delivers most of the scores for Dingle (in the previous game he scored 1-9) but on Sunday

it was Conor Geaney who did most of the damage. He ended up with 1-6. It is hard to believe that Paul did not score at all in the game, but he played the role of playmaker as he and his teammates managed to dull the effectiveness of Mid Kerry’s county men Mike Breen and Seán O’Brien.

Mid Kerry led by six points after 19 minutes, but the Westerners did not panic. The divisional side erred giving in Billy O’Connor the freedom of the park. Conor Geaney’s goal in the 24th minute was crucial, and Dingle went in at the break a point to the good (1-6 to 0-8).

Last year’s beaten finalists stayed in front from there. Mid Kerry kept plugging away but a two-pointer by Niall Geaney gave Dingle a five-point lead. That deficit was cut to three but Mid Kerry could not get through for the equalising goal. They had their chances to level, but a combination of the woodwork and a tight Dingle defence denied them the goal they sought. The full-time score read Dingle 1-16 Mid Kerry 0-16.

Rollercoaster season ends for Kerry FC

Ivan Hurley, the Killarney based Kerry FC Media Officer, has been very helpful throughout the third season of Kerry FC in the LOI.

“The 2025 season has now concluded for the Kingdom,” he tells me. “We return to action next January in the Munster Senior Cup, and we will resume SSE Airtricity Men's First Division action in mid-February.”

Kerry played their final match of 2025 on Friday night when they took on Bray Wanderers in the Carlisle Grounds. After a long campaign of 45 games between friendlies, Munster Senior Cup, FAI Cup and the league, the year ended with a 5-1 defeat.

Ivan reports that this was their second away game of the week as they travelled to Donegal to face Finn Harps on Monday. A 1-1 draw was the result in a game in which Kerry FC would have been disappointed not to have won as they enjoyed the majority of possession and created the better chances.

Although losing 5-1 was not the ending to the season Kerry would have liked, it has been a year full of memorable moments. That thrilling FAI Cup win against Sligo Rovers at Mounthawk was unbelievable. No one at the club will forget those away trips with loyal fans.

2026 won’t be long coming, and we are all looking forward to it.

O’Donoghue Cup reaches quarterfinal stage

Eight teams remain in the ever-popular East Kerry Championship with all four quarter-finals taking place this weekend.

First up it’s Dr Crokes versus Kilcummin this evening (Friday) at 7.30pm. The Crokes will be hoping to bounce back from their largely unexpected defeat to Mid Kerry in the County Championship and home advantage makes them favourites, although Kilcummin have the tools to make things uncomfortable for them.

The other three ties will be staged tomorrow with the action getting underway in Glenflesk at midday when the hosts go up against Kenmare Shamrocks.

Then it’s over to Gneeveguilla who welcome neighbours Rathmore for

what is sure to be a keenly contested encounter. Rathmore will be disappointed to have exited the Kerry SFC at the semi-final stage following defeat to Austin Stacks, but their fantastic victory over East Kerry the previous week showed how deadly they can be on their day. Gneeveguilla, meanwhile, will be buoyed by their hardfought one-point win over the Legion in Round 1.

The final quarter-final sees senior outfit Spa face intermediate club Firies. Throw-in is at 4.30pm in Tullig. Elsewhere, Currow play Kilgarvan in the quarter-final of the Fr Galvin Cup. That match is scheduled for midday on Sunday.

If necessary, there will be extra time and penalties in all games.

Unbeaten Munster torpedo Farrell’s plans

Munster took Leinster to the cleaners at Croke Park on Saturday last, winning 31-14 before an attendance of 51,869 at Croke Park.

I wasn’t at GAA headquarters but I spoke to rugby pundit Jack McGowan who told me the result caused a “seismic shudder through Irish rugby”.

“They torpedoed Andy Farrell’s best laid plans for Chicago and Ireland’s clash with the All Blacks by demolishing URC champions Leinster. Farrell’s plan would have been to play at least 12 from Leinster, two

from Connacht (Aki and Hansen), and a sop to Munster by choosing Beirne.” But now that is in tatters. What a difference that 80 minutes in D1 made. As number 10, Jack Crowley totally outshone Prendergast. Crowley and Beirne must now be shoo-ins for Ireland with centre Tom Farrell also a real contender. Munster are now unbeaten and top of the URC, 13 points ahead of Leinster. A packed Thomond should welcome them home tomorrow for a 7.45pm kick-off as they host Connacht who, under new Head Coach Stuart Lancaster, will be no pushovers.

RUGBY: Young players proudly representing Killarney RFC at a recent match in Aghadoe.

Last Saturday’s double header for the Utility Trust St Paul’s men’s and women’s teams proved to be a fruitful one as both sides picked up impressive wins at home at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

Paul’s made it three victories from three in the Women’s Super League by beating Fr Mathews in what was their first home match of the season. Road wins in Waterford and Portlaoise teed them up nicely for this encounter and James Fleming’s side looked strong throughout, leading from the front and eventually winning by 13.

Tara Cousins hit an early three and she, Maisie Burnham and Lovisa Hevinder pointed the way for the hosts. The trio combined for 55 points.

Also influential were the ever-dependable Lorraine Scanlon (16 points) and Lynn Jones (five points). Síofra O’Shea chipped in with four. Meanwhile, Ciara O'Sullivan made her Super League debut.

Cork outfit Fr Mathews, who remain winless, couldn’t quite get a handle on their Kerry counterparts, although they trailed by just five points at half-time thanks in no small part to the efforts of Laila Blair. The American finished as the game’s top scorer with 34 points. That gap has been pushed out to 15 by the end of the third, however, as Cousins, Jones and Scanlon got the scoreboard moving for the girls in black. Three-pointers by Burnham and Hevinder were daggers as far as Mathews’ challenge was concerned.

Lakers up and running after hard-earned home win

Mathews did manage to make it a single-digit game early in the final quarter but Paul’s pushed on and claimed another win on a scoreline of 80 to 67.

St Paul’s are now one of only two teams with a perfect record in the league, the other being Killester of Dublin. The joint league leaders have three more away trips to Cavan, Dublin and Kildare before their next home game in Killarney at the end of November.

They travel to Virginia to play the Cavan Eagles tomorrow (Saturday). Tip-off is at 3pm.

LAKERS WIN

The St Paul’s Lakers are officially off the mark for the 2025/26 season after they clinched an important win against Malahide in Division 1 of the Men’s National League.

Steve Kelly top scored for the Lakers with 28 points and he played a key role down the stretch as he dropped in crucial free throws to keep the visitors at arm’s length.

The Killarney boys held an eight-point lead heading into the final quarter with Pablo Murcia, Kelly, Jack O’Sullivan and Rui Saraiva all on target in the third, but Malahide kept plugging away and eventually cut the deficit to four. Baskets by Sam Grant, Mark Sheehan and O’Sullivan (three-pointer) settled

Luke O'Hea's side secured an important victory over

the natives’ nerves but a three by Oisín Rice gave Mathews hope. In the end it was Kelly who converted from the stripe to ice the game and secure his side’s maiden victory of the season.

Next up for Luke O’Hea’s charges is a trip to Killenaule to face the Tipp Talons tomorrow at 6.30pm. They then have a quick turnaround as they play

the Panthers in Portlaoise on Bank Holiday Monday, with that game starting at 3pm.

Crosstown rivals the Killarney Cougars were defeated by the Dublin Lions in their last Division 1 outing. They will go in search of their second win of the season when they welcome the Panthers to the Pres Gym tomorrow at 7.30pm.

It was one of those days where everything clicked for the Blues, with some outstanding attacking play and great goals throughout the game. Full credit to Shannon Town, who battled right to the end and showed great attitude despite a tough day against a very strong Athletic side — wishing them the very best for the rest of their season. Athletic now look forward to the next round, where they’ll take on last season’s semi-finalists — another big test for this talented group. Celtic were back in front on 51 mins and took command of the game with goals in the final quarter to gain the win.

SFAI U13 NATIONAL CUP: Killarney Celtic 3-1 Ballymackey. Josh Buckley 2, Dylan McCarthy. Celtic moved into round 3 of the SFAI National Cup after overcoming Ballymackey last weekend. Both teams contributed to a fine contest, but Celtic got in front and sealed the win.

GIRLS U14 PREMIER: Killarney Celtic 1-3 Mastergeeha. Leah Mannix. Celtic were always chasing this game as Mastergeeha took advantage of the wind to lead 2-0 at the break. Mastergeeha broke away to go 3-0 before Celtic pulled 1 back.

CONGRATS to Mark O’Connor 15B who made the KSBGL Team of the week and to Elsie Clifford U14 who made the Girls Roll of Honour.

Mastergeeha

Killarney Legion GAA

O’DONOGHUE CUP: Commiserations to our Senior Men who exited the O’Donoghue Cup at the first-round stage against Gneeveguilla. Despite holding a five-point lead in the second half they were reeled in

by a very competitive Sliabh Luachra side, who finished the stronger to win by the minimum, 1-15 to 1-14. And while defeat is disappointing, when one looks at the year as a whole, finishing in the top half of the County League Division 1 and being Intermediate semi-finalists shows that the team was there or thereabouts. Of course East Kerry is the most competitive Divisional championship with three senior clubs and a host of Intermediate clubs, so any win is always hard earned. We thank Nigel Shevlin and his management team for their effort, work and commitment all season.

U14 LADIES: Our U14 girls took to the field for their East Kerry Division 2 Shield Final, with the home side Spa being their opponents. From the throw-in, it was clear both sides were evenly matched in pace, skill, and determination. Legion hit the ground running, settling into the rhythm of the game with composed play which led to some well-worked early scores. Spa got on the scoreboard after 12 minutes and began to chip away at our lead. Despite the pressure, Legion held firm, entering the break with a narrow advantage of 2-5 to 2-2. Legion started the second half strongly, dominating possession and notching some beautiful early points. However, Spa responded by increasing their intensity. They capitalised on a few moments of loose play, turning over possession and creating dangerous chances in front of goal. The game became a thrilling end-to-end battle, with goals coming thick and fast from both sides. Every time Spa found the net, Legion responded in kind, showing great composure under pressure. Midway through the second half, a scramble on our goal line resulted in a penalty for Spa, which they coolly slotted home to swing momentum in their favour once again. But our girls met each challenge with grit and determination. A brief pause in play due to an injury to a Legion player gave both teams a moment to regroup. When play resumed, our girls dug deep, showing incredible heart to see out the game. In the end, it was our sharp shooting and hard-earned points that made the difference, edging out a dramatic win on the night. Final Score: Legion 6-9 to Spa 7-4. Thank you to Spa for a very competitive game and to the referee for officiating excellently throughout. A special thanks to our dedicated supporters on the sideline. As our U14 campaign comes to a close, we look back with pride and forward with great excitement. This team has shown tremendous progress, and the future is certainly bright for Legion girls football!

Fossa GAA

EAST KERRY MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP:

Fossa played Kilcummin in a very entertaining game on Sunday morning in the East Kerry Minor Championship. Fossa had the better of the opening exchanges with Dylan O’Meara hitting the first two scores of the game, Kilcummin hit back with a point but another brace of scores from Ryan Brady and Dylan O’Meara kept the advantage for the home side. It was very competitive around the middle of the field with both sides attacking without any real results on the scoreboard. Jack Spillane was having a fine game at full back, and he repelled several Kilcummin attacks, Jack Hallissey was driving forward at every opportunity and Mark Kennelly was proving a real handful at midfield with some towering catches. Cathal Breen extended Fossa’s lead with a point in the 15th minute, Kilcummin hit three on the bounce, but Dylan O’Meara hit two super scores to give Fossa a four-point lead in the 24th minute. The game was delayed for a few minutes following an unfortunate injury to Dylan O’Meara who had to be replaced, when play resumed Kilcummin kicked two scores to leave the half time score Fossa 0-8, Kilcummin 0-6. Fossa started the second half in blistering fashion, two points from Shay McCormick and a point each from David Butler and Eoin Bennett extended the lead to six after ten minutes of play. Kilcummin replied with a point and then struck for a goal in the 14th minute, the Fossa response was immediate with Fionn Doyle kicking a free and young Eoin Bennett punching a brilliant point. Kilcummin scored their second goal in the 18th minute, but Fionn Doyle scored a superb point to leave Fossa two ahead after twenty minutes of play. Kilcummin got a foothold in the last period of the game and gradually reeled in the lead even though Fossa fought hard, the visitors took the lead in the 27th minute and in the dying seconds of the game struck for a goal which sealed the win for them on a score of Fossa 0-15, Kilcummin 3-10. It was tough on this Fossa team who played brilliantly and fought with great spirit and heart, they left everything on the

field, and they just came up short in the end. Team: Dara Whelton, Luke McCann, Jack Spillane, Conor O’Mahony, Jack Hallissey, Fionn Doyle 0-2, Derek O’Gorman, Mark Kennelly, David Butler 0-1, Shay McCormick 0-2, Dylan O’Meara 0-5, Cathal Breen 0-1, Ryan Brady 0-2, Sam Clerkin, Ronan Bennett, Eoin Bennett 0-2. CONGRATULATIONS to Kelsey Cummins, Naoise O'Connor and Tara O'Sullivan (Kerry U16s) and Emma O'Connor (Kerry U14s) who attended the Kerry LGFA Juvenile Awards night in Tralee and collected their respective Munster & All Ireland medals for 2025. Well done girls, you did Fossa and your county proud. Well done to Fossa girls Doireann O'Connor, Eve O'Halloran and Leah Fleming who were part of the East Kerry U13 team/panel who had a 2nd round win over Tralee District in Churchill. Kilcummin GAA

EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: Kilcummin are through to the Quarter Final of the O’Donoghue Cup following a testing contest away to Fossa on Saturday. In the end a late flurry of points by Kilcummin saw them through 0-15 to 0-11 where they will now face Dr. Crokes next weekend. Fossa raised the opening white flag of the contest with both sides passing up some early chances as both teams slowly came to terms with the conditions. When Kilcummin finally found their range, they pushed into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead with points from Mark O’Shea and Paul O’Shea (2). The home side lining out without either of their county players continued to ask questions and the contest was tied 0-5 each by the 25th minute. A brace of points by Philip O’Leary and Paul O’Shea pushed Kilcummin to a 0-7 to 0-5 half time lead. Fossa through a well taken 2 point effort from the boot of Jack Clifford tied the contest once again, minutes into the second half and the sides were level once again 0-9 each by the 40th minute before Paul O’Shea gave Kilcummin a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Fossa who were never far away were back to within a point on the 53rd minute (0-12 to 0-11) but three late scores from Paul O’Shea, Cian Foley and Philip O’Leary ensured the win.

FIXTURE: Kilcummin will play Dr. Crokes at Lewis Road on Friday 24th at 7.30pm under lights in the O’Donoghue Cup Quarter Final.

MINORS: With 20 Minutes to go in their East Kerry Minor Football Championship Division 3/4 semi-final Kilcummin trailed Fossa 0-12 to 0-7 and it looked like season over but not for the first time this year this team dug deep and thanks to goals by Ronan McCarthy, Colm Janot and Rory O’Connor they pushed on to a 3-10 to 0-15 win.

UNDER 16: Our under 16 will be out on Sunday morning away to Firies at 11am in the East Kerry Division 1 Quarter Final. We wish the players and management the very best of luck.

SUPER 10: For the first time Kilcummin claimed the Kerry Super 10’s county Under 14 title with a 4-8 to 0-10 win over Scartag-

lin following an exciting evenings football at John Mitchel’s and Caherslee Tralee under lights last Thursday. Having lost out by the smallest margin to An Gaeltacht the team really played some lovely free flowing football to collect wins over Listowel Emmet’s and St Michaels/Foilmore – Skellig Rangers was to prove to be enough to see them top their group on scoring difference. The final which was a repeat of the recent East Kerry final proved to be another exciting affair with goals proving crucial in securing the title. The team will now go forward to the Munster finals and try to defend the crown that was won last year.

AGM: Kilcummin GAA AGM will take place on November 28th, 2025, at the club house.
