After an incredible 42 years of delivering smiles and the post, Killarney's own Denis "Denny" Cronin is hanging up his postman's cap and keys.
Denny, who started his career in Tralee but has been a friendly and familiar face around Killarney for most of his long service at the local Post Office, will be greatly missed by the community.
Denny was known for his quick sense of humor, his constant smile, and his willingness to always go the extra mile to make sure everyone received their parcels. Whether it was a quick hello on the street or a daily chat at the door, everyone who met Denny always came away feeling a little brighter.
Outside of his postal duties, Denny is a keen golfer who enjoys hitting the fair-
ways with his wife, Kathleen. He is also a proud father to Alan, Denise, and Cathy, and a doting grandfather to six grandsons. With his retirement, Denny is looking forward to spending more time with his family, including trips to Australia to visit his two eldest children and to Galway to see his youngest. While he will be sorely missed by his colleagues at the Post Office, his family is overjoyed to congratulate their Dad, Husband, and Grandad on his remarkable 42 years of service and wish him many happy years ahead in his well-deserved retirement.
Residents of Whitebridge Manor have launched a community fundraiser to install a defibrillator (AED) in the estate following a recent cardiac emergency involving a local man.
Sean Óg O’Sullivan, a resident of the 73-home estate, went into sudden cardiac arrest and survived thanks to the fast action of family members who performed CPR and the swift response of emergency services. The group hopes
to raise around €2,500 to cover the cost of the defibrillator, cabinet, installation, and ongoing maintenance. Residents have responded positively, with many already supporting the effort. As part of the plan, CPR and first aid training will
be organised for residents, making sure more people are prepared to act in case of another emergency. The fundraiser is being run with support from Heartsafe Killarney which will provide guidance on best practices for AED use and training.
Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae has criticised the ongoing roadworks in Fossa, raising serious concerns about the safety of the new layout and the value for money being achieved.
Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday, Deputy Healy-Rae told the Taoiseach that the carriageway has been significantly narrowed as part of "active travel" works, reducing it to 20 feet while widening footpaths, cycleways, and grass margins. He stated that locals are "very upset and concerned," with videos showing buses having to pull in their mirrors to pass each other.
"People are very upset and concerned about the value for money," Deputy Healy-Rae said. "I ask that until some review, investigation or assessment is done and people are sure of what is happening, no more of this kind of work be carried out."
He highlighted that this stretch of road, between the Golden Nugget and the Gap Cross on the Ring of Kerry route, is heavily used by tourists, buses, and locals alike. He pointed out the irony that this was
previously the widest part of the road, while efforts are being made to widen other sections. "Tractors, agricultural vehicles and hauliers cannot pass each other anymore," he added.
Deputy Healy-Rae also expressed concerns about proposed similar works on the N22 from the Cork side into Killarney, including the removal of Daly's roundabout and further narrowing of the road. He called for a "proper assessment and review of value for money" before such works proceed.
In response, the Taoiseach acknowledged Deputy Healy-Rae's local knowledge and stated that the Fossa project is likely a National Transport Authority (NTA) initiative.
He agreed that there should be a thorough evaluation of the value-for-money aspects of such projects and clarity on the objectives, especially when road nar-
rowing can create difficulties for all road users.
Deputy Healy-Rae's concerns echo those raised at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting last week, where Councillors Brendan Cronin and Maura Healy-Rae questioned the safety of the narrowed lanes for large vehicles like HGVs, buses, and agricultural machinery. Cllr. Cronin asked if the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) engineers who designed the layout would take responsibility for accidents involving these vehicles, given numerous public complaints.
While Kerry County Council stated that the road design aligns with legal markings and that drivers are responsible for adhering to the Rules of the Road, Cllr. Healy-Rae also sought assurances that large vehicles could pass safely on the reduced carriageway. Council officials maintained that the project, aimed at traffic calming and enhancing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, was designed according to relevant standards and approved by TII, who are funding it under safety allocations.
Councillor Grady raises further concerns on Fossa works
Independent Councillor Martin Grady has added to the concerns surrounding the new road layout in Fossa.
Grady visited the site with local residents to take measurements. According to Cllr Grady's measurements, the main road carriageway is six meters wide.
He noted that the footpath on the left side of the road (travelling away from Killarney) measures 5.7 meters, while the footpath on the right is 3.3 meters. This means there is a total of 9 meters dedicated to footpaths compared to the 6-meter road width.
Grady suggested that there is still an opportunity to adjust the layout, by moving in the "7-inch curb line on the left side that cars won't mount."
He believes this adjustment could be crucial to allow emergency service vehicles to pass without obstruction.
"I fear this will be the cause of accidents," Cllr Grady added.
Hotel Killarney has officially been awarded four-star status by Fáilte Ireland, a major milestone for one of the town’s best-loved and most family-friendly hotels.
The accreditation follows a significant refurbishment programme that was completed last year, and reflects the hotel’s commitment to offering elevated levels of comfort, service, and hospitality to its guests. The newly awarded four-star status is a recognition of the quality and care that has gone into reimagining the hotel’s guest experience, from updated bedrooms and refreshed public spaces to upgraded leisure facilities, all added to the warm, welcoming atmosphere that is always a constant, at the heart of everything the hotel offers.
“This recognition means the world to our team,” said General Manager Misja Herfurt. “Many of them have been with us for years, and I know they are all so proud of this achievement. We’ve always aimed to offer a warm welcome and genuine, heartfelt hospitality to our guests, and now that’s perfectly matched by four-star comfort, service, and style. We love welcoming our guests into a space that reflects the best of Killarney. Warm, inviting, and now with four stars — we’re delighted.”
The 2024 refurbishment brought a fresh new look to the hotel’s 190 bedrooms and Family Suites and transformed key guest areas, including the expansive lobby, the bar and restaurant, and the Club Vitae leisure centre with its 18-metre pool and gym. Family facilities have
also been enhanced, with the addition of updated play zones, an expanded kids’ club, the introduction of Cubbie sensory hubs, and improved family room options. Further development in 2025 included
refurbishment of 31 additional bedrooms and the start of significant investment in a phased refurbishment of the Leisure Centre including the pool, gym and changing facilities.

Passengers using Killarney Train Station who require assistance will now benefit from a major improvement in service.
From this week, Iarnród Éireann has reduced the required notice time for accessibility assistance from 12 hours to just one hour at 15 of the country’s busiest stations—including Killarney.
The change was officially launched on Monday by Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien, along with Iarnród Éireann CEO Jim Meade and members of the company’s Disability Users Group.
The new one-hour notice policy follows
a successful pilot and aims to make train travel more accessible for people with disabilities.
Killarney is one of just four stations in Munster included in this improvement, alongside Mallow, Cork, and Tralee. Minister Darragh O’Brien said, “This is very welcome news regarding the improvements being made for customers with disabilities. The Government remains firmly committed to delivering a step change in the supports and services required by people with disabilities,” he said.

The new initiative began last Tuesday, marking the first time the club has offered this activity.
Thanks to the support of Orla Brosnan and her team at Clippity Clop, the therapeutic riding sessions are scheduled to take place every Tuesday evening from 6.30pm for one hour throughout May, June, and July. According to Claire Doherty of Kerry Stars, the horse-riding offers more than just physical benefits. "Not only is it great for balance, confidence, and coordination, it is also a great social night for our athletes to mix and meet new friends," she said.
The club says that therapeutic riding can significantly improve an individual's physical and emotional well-being.
The interaction with horses can build confidence, enhance coordination, and improve balance in a fun and engaging way.
The weekly sessions also provide a valuable opportunity for the athletes to socialise and connect with each other.

Kerry TD Michael Cahill has raised the issue of the Beaufort Sewerage Scheme in the Dáil, seeking an update on the €6 million project aimed at resolving the area's ongoing sewerage problems.
Deputy Cahill, who previously served as a local councillor and lobbied strongly for the scheme, welcomed the funding when it was announced. Now, as a TD, he is pushing for progress and this week, submitted a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
"The people of Beaufort have suffered for far too long due to a sewerage system that has failed many of them badly," Deputy Cahill stated. "Having secured €6 million towards a solution, I felt I needed to follow up on what progress has been made and to see if timelines could be identified for completion.

Local artist Christina O’Hara is set to open her first solo art exhibition, Fragmented Connections, later this month in Siamsa Tíre, Tralee.
The show, which opens on May 22 and runs until June 7, explores Christina’s personal experience living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a chronic connective tissue disorder.
A former student of St. Brigid’s Secondary School, Christina went on to study Fine Art at Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork and is now studying Arts Management at the University of Galway.
Her exhibition aims to give life to the often invisible symptoms of chronic illness and to spark wider conversation around
hidden disabilities.
“Fragmented Connections is a deeply personal body of work,” said Christina. “I wanted to create something that not only reflects my own journey with EDS but also invites others to engage with chronic illness and disability in a more open and creative way.”
Alongside the artwork, Christina is inviting the public to take part in EDS awareness through accessible and creative initiatives as part of the exhibition.
“Being from Killarney, it means a lot to me to share this with the wider community,” she said. “I hope the show will create a more understanding and supportive space for those living with hidden disabilities.”
Kerry TD Michael Cahill has called on the Government to provide funding to support the Sustainable Killarney 2030 project.
Raising the issue in the Dáil, Deputy Cahill asked the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Darragh O’Brien, to make funds available for the initiative, which is being led by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce. The project aims to help Killarney transition into a low-carbon, sustainable town in line with national climate and energy targets.
The Community Climate Action Programme is designed to support local communities working with local authorities to reduce carbon emissions and become more environmentally friendly.
Deputy Cahill said the project may not have qualified under the current pro-
gramme criteria, which are focused on not-for-profit community groups, but the Minister acknowledged that it has potential value and may be eligible in future phases.
“This initiative by Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce deserves Government support, and I am confident that a suitable funding scheme will be announced in the near future,” said Deputy Cahill.
He believes the project could benefit a wide range of local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, shops, and service providers.
“I am confident that Sustainable Killarney 2030 will become a huge success,” he said. “I believe Killarney can become Ireland’s first sustainable town, with the business community working together to reduce the town’s carbon footprint.”

Students from St Brigid’s Secondary School have won a national award for their efforts to promote the Irish language on social media. They received the award at a special ceremony hosted by Gael Linn in Mary Immaculate College this week. The students are part of ‘An Coiste Gaeilge’ – the Irish Committee – which was set up in September 2023. Since then, the group has worked hard on new ideas to promote Irish in the school, with help from Transition Year students and guidance from their teacher, Sinéad Collins.
The school is taking part in the Gaelbhratach scheme, which is supported by Gael Linn and involves 130 schools across the country. St. Brigid’s was awarded its first Irish flag last year and received its second this year. They are now one of only five Kerry schools to hold a Gaelbhratach in 2025.
In addition to receiving the Irish flag, the school was named Overall Winner for the Promotion of the Irish Language on Social Media – or Mórdhuais don Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn ar na Meáin shóisialta.
Over the past two years, the students have run monthly events like Irish bingo (Réamhfhocail Biongó), day trips to the Gaeltacht, Irish sports competitions like An Poc Fada, guest speakers, and art displays around the school. They’ve also taken part in workshops, including a visit
a guided nature walk from Derrycunnihy Church to Lord Brandon’s Cottage, running from 10:00am to 2:00pm. This walk will showcase the park's unique flora and fauna. to TikTok HQ for a technology day earlier this year.
New initiatives this year include Aoi na hAoine (Friday’s Guest), where committee members interview teachers, past pupils, and parents in Irish, showing how the language is used in daily life. Daily school announcements are now made in Irish too.
Irish teacher Ms Sinéad Collins said: “I am immensely proud of the effort that has been made across the school community – from the members of the Coiste Gaeilge to the rest of the student body; from my colleagues to management. Everyone has got on board to ensure we are successful year on year. It takes a village and this was a collective effort and richly deserved.”

Wild hills of the Valley, stones of Dunloe, Graceful your tear drops trickle and flow. Adorned in dawns breaking, to a new day awakening, Shortens the shadows of moments before.
Slow rise from slumber, mountainous wonder, Torc, Bowl, broad Tomies, your tenors in arms. Steadfast before us, in hum with dawns chorus, Give flight to the eagle in pale cotton sky.
High as she’s circling, proud glide foreboding, The views from my lady pour through Bricín’s eye.
Neath native leaf arches, River Deenagh she marches, Through pondering bridges her babble and rhyme.
So gentle the chanting, in dapple dancing, Carries her keeper in wedded bell chime. Mary’s spire high loom, o’er bustle streets full bloom, Of artists and boast, your tourist smile.
In old stone and story, gardened fortress of glory, Your Muckross House once blushed the ‘dendron smile. Bright blues, pinks and purples, a roaming bee circles, Rainbow beds rested in orange tempered sky. The hand holding evening, through crunch pathways weaving, A wagon wheel creak and clip clop go by.
In merry eye dazzle, last light falls on your castle, Flicker butterfly waters, the glisten, the glow. Lone swan set sail, through west wind prevail, A goose bump shiver, as shadows now flow. Echoes the knell knock, tamed oar, glide, feathered rock, As distance boat motor muffles your shores. Sets mallard in squeal flight, through swallow, swift delight,
With red sky descend, your moments must end, In a claddagh bay treat, clasps sunsets final heartbeat. Curtain closes once more, to a new day in store, Three tenors now sore, floras final encore. Killarney, Killarney, Killarney, Oh, How I Love You.

Businesses in Killarney need to work more closely together to build a stronger local brand and improve the town’s long-term success.
That was the key message from retail expert Eddie Shanahan, who addressed local traders at a breakfast event organised by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce at the Killarney Plaza Hotel.
Mr Shanahan said that by sharing ideas, setting common goals and focusing on collaboration, local businesses can become more effective. He encouraged them to think of Killarney as one united brand, not just a collection of individual shops and services. Strong brands, he
noted, are built over time through consistency and cooperation. He spoke about the need for Killarney to have a clear strategy that puts the customer first and focuses on what makes the town special. He called for more green spaces, better transport, improved housing, and quality public services—all of which support both residents and visitors.
Mr Shanahan also stressed that good service starts with good management and training, especially after staff changes caused by the pandemic. He said businesses must focus on the customer experience and asked owners to think about how their brand is spoken about when they’re not in the room

Kerry TD Michael Cahill is calling for the Sliabh Luachra district to be officially recognised as a protected area of culture and arts.
Sliabh Luachra, which includes towns like Castleisland, Gneeveguilla, Scartaglen, Rathmore, Ballydesmond, Kilcummin, Knocknagree, Glenflesk, and Killarney, is renowned for its deep roots in Irish traditional music, dance, song, stories, and folklore.
He is calling on the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media to create a ‘Protective Designation Statu’ for geographical areas or cultural activi-
ties, which would provide official government recognition and protection. Deputy Cahill, said: "We all feel very strongly about our culture and heritage and we love all of our traditional performance art forms and how they express our Irishness. They live on within us, but they should be protected and promoted. "We rightly recognise our Irish language practicing communities by designating them as Gaeltacht areas. Our traditional music, dance, song, storytelling and folklore are a vitally important part of our psyche also and deserve proper official status recognition. I will be bringing my proposals to the Minister.”

Transition Year students at Killarney Community College spent last Tuesday learning the skills to become baristas.
They completed a full-day training course and are now qualified to make coffee, which could make them very employable in local cafes and restaurants this summer.
Their teachers, who are described as the school's "resident coffee experts," were impressed with the students' hard work and enjoyed the
lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos the students made throughout the day.
In addition to their barista training, the TY students also took a trip to Mallow. There, they learned about the rules of the road, practiced the driver theory test, and many got behind the wheel of a car for the first time. They also learned about the dangers of speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
The Consul General of Ireland in Munich, James C. O'Shea, and Keelin O'Sullivan from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, both originally from the Killarney area, visited St Brendan's College on Friday last.
They spoke to Transition Year students as part of the Global Ireland Schools Programme, which brings Irish diplomats to schools to talk about their work in other countries. Mr O'Shea told the students about his career and his current role in Mu-
nich, where he helps Irish citizens and promotes Ireland's interests in the German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
The Irish Consulate General in Munich was recently set up last August as part of Ireland's plan to increase its diplomatic presence around the world.
O'Sullivan talked about work on Ireland's international development programme and experiences as part of the Irish delegation to the United Nations in New York
Second-year art students from Killarney Community College recently travelled to Limerick to visit the Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD), which is part of the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS).
While there, the students viewed an exhibition that included artwork they themselves had created with student art teacher Ms. Rachel Murnane.
The Community College students were
excited to see their work displayed alongside pieces from other secondary schools across the country.
The group also met Jennifer Lyne, a former student of Killarney Community College, who has just finished her first year at LSAD and is pursuing a degree in fashion design.
The students from Killarney Community College were given a tour of parts of the art college, including the sculpture studios and the printmaking department.

Motorists in Northern Ireland are currently enjoying significantly lower fuel prices compared to those in the Republic of Ireland, with the gap reaching its widest point in five years.
As of last month, the average price for a litre of petrol in Northern Ireland was £1.29 (€1.50), while drivers in the Republic paid approximately €1.72. Diesel prices also showed a marked difference, averaging £1.35 (€1.57) per litre
in the North, compared to €1.69 in the Republic.
This disparity means drivers filling a 50-litre tank could save up to €13 by refuelling in Northern Ireland, a difference that’s fuelling a surge in cross-border trips to save on costs.
Several key factors are contributing to the growing divide in fuel prices, with taxation at the heart of the issue.
In the Republic of Ireland, fuel taxes including excise duties and carbon levies account for more than half of the final
pump price. On May 1, 2025, the government raised the carbon tax from €56 to €63.50 per tonne, a move that added around €1.28 to the cost of a standard 60-litre fill-up.
In addition, the phased reintroduction of excise duties temporarily cut during the energy crisis has further driven up prices in the Republic, while Northern Ireland has maintained more stable pricing, helped by lower tax rates and greater retailer competition.
Sneem mourns popular local following farm accident
The community of Sneem, is in mourning the loss of Joe Quinn, a 65-year-old farmer and machinery contractor, who lost his life in a farm accident earlier this week.
Emergency services were called to a farm in Tahilla, near Sneem, shortly after 8am on Tuesday, May 13, where Mr. Quinn was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is understood to have involved a tractor, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and Gardaí. Mr. Quinn, originally from Tulloha near Kenmare, resided in Gearha North, Blackwater, Killarney. He was widely known across Kerry for his work in the plant hire business and for cutting turf for many local farmers. He is survived by his wife Anne and their three sons, Danny, Kevin, and Joey. Requiem Mass at St. Michael's Church, Sneem, will take place today (Friday), May 16, at 11:00am, with burial afterwards in Sneem Cemetery.
Tánaiste Micheál Martin has indicated that up to ten personnel from various State agencies are expected to be seconded to the newly established Housing Activation Office.
The move is seen as a step toward accelerating housing delivery in the face of mounting national pressure over the housing crisis.
Speaking at a Fine Gael parliamentary party meeting, Taoiseach Simon Harris confirmed that Minister for Housing Darragh O'Brien will soon present a de-
tailed staffing proposal to both him and the Taoiseach. This proposal will later be reviewed by the Cabinet’s housing subcommittee.
The discussion follows the high-profile decision by Brendan McDonagh, CEO of the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA), to withdraw from consideration for leading the new office. McDonagh stepped back after political backlash emerged around the prospect of him retaining his €430,000 salary if he were to transition into the role.
Several party members at the meeting
expressed growing frustration with delays in essential infrastructure development, arguing it remains a significant barrier to resolving the housing emergency. Opposition voices echoed these concerns during a heated Dáil debate this week. TDs from Sinn Féin, Labour, the Social Democrats, Independent Ireland, and members of the technical group accused the Government of failing to adequately invest in core infrastructure such as water and electricity, key components, they argue, in enabling housing projects to progress.
A new film which showcases the spectacular and unique history and heritage of the Milltown area is to be made available online this week. It follows two recent sellout screenings of ‘Milltown: The Story of a Kerry Landscape’ at the local community hall which were attended by 300 people.
An initiative of the Milltown History and Heritage Society, the spectacular film showcases how the archaeology, heritage and landscape of the locality have changed over thousands of years. It begins with the story of the 6,000-year-old portal tomb at Killaclohane and takes the story of the development of Milltown right up to the present day.
Due to demand, and to ensure that the film can be seen by a wide audience, the documentary, which was filmed and directed by Niall Foley, will be published on the website of the Milltown History and Heritage Society on Thursday, May 15 at 8.00pm.
“There has been such an incredible response to the in-person screenings of the film as well as demand from Milltown natives across the world to see it, so we want to share it with a wide audience,” said Owen O’Shea of the Milltown History and Heritage Society.
The Society has a donations link on its
website, milltownhistoryheritage.ie and has ambitions plans to preserve local heritage sites, collect oral histories and promote the historic landscape of Milltown. “We have some exciting plans for the coming months, so we are appealing to patrons to support our work with a donation,” said Owen.
“We have such a special and unique history and heritage in the area. Key locations and sites like the 13th century Augustinian abbey at Killagha, the Mass Rock where Fr Thaddeus Moriarty was arrested in 1653, and Kilcoleman Abbey which was the home of the Godfrey family for hundreds of years, feature prominently in the film as well as the many social, cultural, economic, and political developments which made Milltown what it is today,” he said.
The script for ‘Milltown: The Story of a Kerry Landscape’ was researched and written by Dr John Knightly and Dr Owen O’Shea and the project coordinator was Stewart Stephens of the Milltown Community and Chamber Alliance. The film was funded by the LEADER programme and Kerry County Council.

A government minister has pledged that waiting times for driving tests will be reduced to no more than ten weeks by this autumn, despite strong opposition criticism highlighting that some applicants are currently facing waits of up to 43 weeks.
Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Independent TD Seán Canney, made the announcement during a Dáil debate, acknowledging that the present delays are unacceptable and require urgent intervention. However, his remarks were met with frustration from several TDs, who argued the situation has become so dire in some areas that "it's easier to become an astronaut" than secure a driving test appointment. There were also calls for refunds for those waiting beyond the new target and reports of individuals traveling abroad to take the test sooner. Minister Canney revealed that the average wait time is now 27 weeks, attributing the surge to a combination of pandemic-related backlogs, increased inward migration, and a growing population. In response, the Road Safety Authority (RSA) has committed to cutting the wait to ten weeks by September. To ensure progress, Canney said he will receive updates from the RSA every two weeks.
"When I assumed this role, I recognised the scale of the problem," he said. "I met
with the RSA two weeks ago and found their initial plan inadequate. Today, I met again with the CEO to push for a more aggressive approach."
Under the revised strategy, the number of trained testers will increase steadily over the coming months. Canney said the RSA has now been authorised to recruit up to 200 additional driving examiners, double the number employed just two years ago, while also maintaining testing standards.
Additional measures include the use of overtime for current testers, the temporary re-employment of retired testers, and test availability on public holiday weekends, all aimed at tackling the backlog.
Canney also stated the RSA will publish its new plan next week and commit to issuing biweekly progress updates on reduced waiting times and increased staffing.

Students from St Brendan’s College have given €600 to Kerry Hospice.
The money was raised from their book, ‘Futures from the Past’ which was published in April 2024.

Transition Year students from schools across County Kerry were recently recognised for their creative work focusing on the environment at the Rubbish Film Festival Regional Awards.
This national festival encourages young people to think about
climate issues through filmmaking and poster design.
Students were asked to create short films and posters with strong messages about waste, sustainability, and climate action. At the Kerry awards event, their creativity, team-
work, and powerful storytelling were celebrated.
The winners announced were: Presentation Secondary School Castleisland for "Best Movie," Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí as "Runner-Up Movie," and St. Brendan’s College, Killarney, who won "Best Poster" for their entry ti-
tled "Final Forecast."
The entries showed the unique viewpoints of young people on climate challenges, often using humour, emotion, and a clear message for change.
The Rubbish Film Festival is supported by Kerry County Council, Creative Ireland, and the Department of Education. This funding allows the initiative to reach schools throughout the region, promoting creative climate education.
Killarney bikers are organising a charity bike run this Saturday in memory of Denis Foley, a wellknown local biker who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in Spain last year.
Denis's friend, Aidan Foley, along with fellow Killarney bikers, have organised the event.
Registration will take place from 10am at the Old Killarney Inn, with the bike run departing at 12pm.
All types of bikes are welcome, and the entry fee is €25 per bike. Refreshments will be provided when the bikers return, and there will also be a raffle and music later in the evening.
Aidan has set up an online fundraising page for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. He said, "Their support during such a heartbreaking time meant more than words can express, and now I want to give back so they can continue helping other families in need.”
Denis's niece, Grace Foley, explained how much the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust helped their family after Denis's passing in October 2024.
"Their support in getting Denis home to Killarney took so much of the burden from our minds and allowed us to grieve without that added worry. On behalf of
the Foley family, Denis’s soulmate Joan and all his friends, I would like to express our eternal gratitude to this incredible organisation."
Grace described Denis as a "gentleman with a rogue-ish smile" who loved dogs and was a beloved brother, partner, uncle, cousin, and friend.
His passion for biking took him on many adventures all over the world including the famed Route 66 in the United States of America.

The Government have approved the formal drafting of the National Vehicle and Driver File Bill 2025.
The Bill contains provisions to allow for the abolition of the requirement to display a motor tax disc. With the widespread deployment of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology, An Garda Síochána already has immediate digital access to motor tax information. This legislation will remove the now unnecessary validation of tax compliance with a paper disc.
Additionally the Bill will provide the necessary legislative basis to facilitate the flow of information so that local au-
thorities, in their role as road authorities, may request, receive and process road collision data from both the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Síochána.
This data will enable road authorities to target areas where collisions are more prone to occur with investment and infrastructure. Investing in safer roads is aligned with the government’s Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 and broader EU Safe Systems approach to road safety.
As well as the provisions in this Bill re-
moving the requirement to display a motor tax disc, work is ongoing in the Department of Transport in relation to the requirement to display paper insurance discs and certificates of roadworthiness. These are provided for in secondary legislation and are being worked on in parallel with the Bill.
The Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Sean Canney, welcomed the decision, “The abolition of paper motor tax discs is part of a wider project to remove the need to display paper discs in windscreens, and I look forward to supporting the legislation through the Oireachtas in the coming months.”
Job seekers and employers in Kerry will have a chance to meet at the Kerry Jobs Fair 2025 on May 20, at the Rose Hotel in Tralee.
Over 30 companies from the county will be there, offering hundreds of job openings across different sectors.
The free event is organised by NEWKD Local Development Company, in partnership with The Rose Hotel and Tralee Chamber Alliance. Anyone interested can attend by registering on the day. People looking for work can explore opportunities in areas like office administration, IT, accounting, finance, hospitality, manufacturing, food production, and retail.
The event aims to link job seekers and employers with useful information and support related to employment. Alongside employer stands, there will be a careers clinic offering help with CV writing, interview skills, and information on training and career development.
There will also be workshops for both employees and employers about employing people who are not Irish citizens.
Robert Carey, NEWKD SICAP Programme Manager, said that bringing together many employers, services, and speakers will give job seekers a great chance to talk directly to potential employers, join workshops on career progression, and learn about employment schemes like Tús, CE, and WPEP. He added that employers will get to meet job seekers
face-to-face and get information on employing people from abroad, which is important for business growth.
Efforts are being made to help Ukrainian refugees and those seeking international protection attend the fair, with information provided beforehand and interpreters available on the day. NEWKD, as part of the Kerry Community Response Forum, highlights that employment is key for refugees integrating into the community.
During the event, employers can learn about the specifics of employing migrants, get answers to common questions, and raise any concerns. A workshop for employers will be led by Frank O`Boyle from the Irish Refugee Council. In addition to the job fair, there will be information sessions for all visitors on topics such as CV preparation (led by Sean Connell, HR at NEWKD), interview skills (presented by Lydia Oboryna from the Open Door Initiative), employment
law for migrants, accessing the labour market for those with temporary protection, and entrepreneurship workshops on starting a business and finding funding.
The Newkd Kerry Jobs Fair 2025 is supported by the Rose Hotel and the Tralee Chamber Alliance, with funding from the SICAP programme, which is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Local Community Development Committee (LCDC).

If you are planning to visit another EU country this year, you should apply for your European Health Insurance Card in case you need to access medical care while abroad.
What is the European Health Insurance Card?
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access public healthcare in another EU/EEA state for free or at a reduced rate. You can use it when you are travelling abroad or when you are staying temporarily in another EU State. Each family member needs their own card. It does not cover private healthcare and does not replace travel insurance. It lasts up to 4 years. When abroad, always carry your EHIC with you.
Can I get a European Health Insurance Card?
You can only apply for a European Health Insurance Card if you live in Ireland or if you live in another European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) member state, or Switzerland.
If you live in Ireland but you are linked to another EU/EEA State's Social Security System, contact the health authorities in that country for more information. If you live in Northern Ireland but are employed in Ireland, you can get an Irish-issued EHIC. Where can I use it?
You can use your European Health In-
surance Card in any European Union or European Economic Area (EEA) country and in Switzerland. Currently, the EEA comprises of the 27 member states of the European Union together with Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein.
If you are travelling outside the EU/EEA, you should get private health insurance instead.
Can I use it in the UK?
If you are an Irish citizen, you have access to healthcare under the Common Travel Area while visiting the UK. However, other EU citizens should continue to use the EHIC, which is still accepted in the UK.
How much does a European Health Insurance Card cost?
There is no fee for the European Health Insurance Card or a Temporary Replacement Certificate. Renewing a European Health Insurance Card is also free.
What if I don't have my EHIC before I travel?
If you don't have your European Health Insurance Card for any reason, you can get a Temporary Replacement Certificate. This Certificate gives you the same entitlement as the Card, but for a shorter period.
You can apply online for this Certificate, in-person or by post to your Local Health Office. You can only receive a Temporary Replacement Certificate for yourself.
What does it cover?
Free or reduced cost public healthcare in any of the EU and EEA countries
A temporary stay of up to 3 months
Pre-existing medical conditions
Routine maternity care – if you’re not going there to give birth
If you’re a student studying abroad, you’ll be covered for up to an academic year.
What it does not cover?
Private healthcare
The cost to fly you back to Ireland
Ongoing or permanent healthcare
Medical expenses if your reason for going abroad is to have treatment
Will I have to pay anything for healthcare with my EHIC?
In some EU member states, you may have to make some payment towards the cost of the services you receive, just as people in that state do. You will not receive a re-fund for this or for private healthcare.
How can I get a refund from the HSE if I paid for healthcare while abroad?
You may be able to get a refund if you had to pay because you did not have your EHIC card with you or because the healthcare providers charged you by mistake.
Apply for a refund by email. Send your receipts to E126.Refunds@hse.ie. Or email them to overseas.medservices@ hse.ie if you live in Dublin, Wicklow or
Kildare.
The HSE will send an E126 form to the health authorities in the other state to find out:
• If you used a public health service
• How much of a refund is due
When the HSE receive the completed E126 form from the other state, the HSE can see if a refund is due or not. Further information is available on the HSE website.
How do I apply?
You complete an application form and send the completed form to your Local Health Office. You can download the form or pick one up from your local Citizens Information Centre. If you have a medical card or drug payment scheme card, you can apply on-line.
If you already had an EHIC but it has expired, you can renew it online if you have your old EHIC number and your PPS number, provided that your address has not changed.
If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Killarney. Opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

As you sit and reminisce
About the times we had together
And all the people that you miss?
Is music all around you
All those songs you held so dear?
Do you and Mom still sing together
The way you did when you were here?
I think that heaven must be grateful

And your silly sense of play.

You’ll never be the sun turning in the sky
And you won’t be the moon above us on a moonlit night
And you won’t be the stars in heaven Although they burn so bright
But even on the deepest ocean
You will be the light.
You may not always shine
As you go barefoot over stone
You might be so long together
Or you might walk alone
And you won’t find that love comes easy
But that love is always right
So even when the dark clouds gather
You will be the light.
And if you lose the part inside
When loves turns round on you
Leaving the past behind
Is knowing you’ll do like you always do
Holding you blind, keeping you true.
You’ll never be the sun turning in the sky
And you won’t be the moon above us on a moonlit night
And you won’t be the stars in heaven Although they burn so bright
But even on the deepest ocean You will be the light .

Chris O’Sullivan late of White Bridge, Killarney who died on 21st May 2002.
It’s hard to face tomorrow when the ones we love are gone, Its harder still to realise that life must still go on, The sadness and the heartache may not always show, People say it lessens, how little do they know.
They say we have our memories, but they do not understand, We cannot touch a memory’s face or hold a memory’s hand,
So through this vale of sorrow, we sadly walk today, Our thoughts are always with you Mom, as life goes on its way.
Loved and remembered always by your sons Tim, Con, Danny and John, daughters Caroline and Noreen, son-in-law, daughters-in-law, partner, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

ALL-IRELAND SFC: GROUP 2
Kerry v Roscommon Saturday at 2.30pm
Fitzgerald Stadium Live on GAA+
Kerry begin their journey through the harshly termed Group of Life on Saturday when they host Division 2 runners-up Roscommon in Killarney.
While it’s true that Group 2 isn’t exactly the Group of Death (Group 4 with Galway, Armagh, Dublin and Derry takes that honour), each of the Kingdom’s upcoming round robin opponents can be dangerous in their own way.
Cork very nearly took Kerry down in the Munster semi-final so another trip to Leeside can hardly be classed as a walk in the Páirc. And Meath ended Dublin’s reign in Leinster a few short weeks ago. As for the Rossies, they impressed en route to second place in Division 2, quickly earning promotion back to the top tier at the first time of asking. They lost to Monaghan by 10 points in the league decider and then to Galway by nine in the Connacht semi-final, so the form line isn’t great by them, but a cursory glance at their team sheet reveals some fine footballers.
Enda Smith is a force of nature on his day, the Murtaghs (Ciaráin and Diarmuid) are well able to play, Ben O’Carroll is lively, and captain Brian Stack is a high-level defender. So they certainly have some weapons that can pose problems for any outfit, Kerry included. With that being said, the home side will naturally be strong favourites at the Fitzgerald Stadium, particularly with
star playmaker Paudie Clifford coming back into the team following his onematch ban. Shane Ryan may also be in line to reclaim the number one jersey after limping off with a badly cut knee against Cork a month ago, though his deputy Shane Murphy has done well in his stead.
Ryan’s Rathmore clubmate Paul Murphy is also thought to be nearing a return having missed the Munster final against Clare with a calf injury.
Winning this game is more important than some are insinuating. Yes, only one team per group will be eliminated when the three rounds of fixtures have been completed, so one win could be enough to see a team through. But there’s a big difference between finishing first and finishing third. Third place teams will have an away preliminary quarter-final against a second place team from another group, while first place teams advance straight to the quarter-finals proper (and get a week off to rest and recuperate). I have a fair idea which of those options Jack O’Connor would favour. You have to go all the way back to 2003 to find the last championship meeting between these teams. Páidí Ó Sé’s men emerged victorious from an All-Ireland quarter-final tie with five points to spare.
Páidí also played his part in the last Kerry v Roscommon encounter before that: the 1980 All-Ireland final, which Kerry won by 1-9 to 1-6. In 2022, the sportswriter Martin Breheny ranked it as one of the worst All-Ireland finals of the previous 50 years.
Here's hoping for something a little more appealing on Saturday.

Spa GAA are gearing up for the fourth annual Heineken Killarney Club 7s, to be staged at the club grounds in Tullig over the Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday and Sunday, May 31st and June 1st).
Gaelic football legends Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Brian Fenton (who has Spa roots) helped launch the event in Killarney recently and excitement is building for what promises to be the best Club 7s yet.
This year 40 teams from across Ireland, including 24 ladies’ and 16 men’s squads, will take part in the fast-paced 7-a-side football tournament. The live music will play from 12pm to 10pm daily, with Gearóid Meehan, Derry & Rosie, The Blow-Ins, Meadhbh Walsh, and Highstool Prophets on stage on Saturday. On Sunday, The Candle Lighters,
A great performance by Killarney Athletic saw them clinch the Jimmy Falvey Youth Cup in emphatic fashion as they overcame rivals MEK Galaxy at Mounthawk Park with six goals to spare.
The Blues started strongly and were 4-0 up at the break with goals from

Whether you're attending for the football, the music, the food, or the family-friendly atmosphere, the Heineken Killarney Club 7s is set once again to be a standout event on the summer calendar. It’s an occasion not to be missed.
Seán O’Mahony (2), Jake Nash and Luke Doolan. The message from both management teams at half-time would have been to keep going and continue playing in the right manner, and in fairness to the players on both sides they did exactly that.
Athletic managed to add two more goals
after the break: O’Mahony completed his hat-trick from the spot, and JJ O’Donoghue rounded off the scoring.
Man of the Match was hat-trick hero O’Mahony, who also bagged a crucial goal in the semi-final.
Captain Caolan Mitchell, who has enjoyed a stellar season for the club, was
sent forward to accept the trophy from Maria and Mike Falvey.
After the game, the Killarney Athletic club noted that Jimmy Falvey was a proud Killarney Celtic man who enjoyed many great battles with Athletic over the years, and they are honoured to hold the trophy in his memory for 2025.
CHAMPIONS:

The Fitzgerald Stadium will be the place to be tomorrow for Kerry v Roscommon in the All-Ireland group stages.
After strolling through Clare in the recent Munster final, they will take Roscommon in their stride. Even allowing for the loss of certain players rehabbing from injuries, Kerry will have a strong starting line-up, and you can expect plenty of substitutions during the second half, giving fringe players some game time. Payback for doing all the same training as the regular starters. Then it will be Cork away followed by Meath at a neutral venue TBC.
No joy for the Kerry hurlers in the Joe McDonagh Cup as they were hammered by Laois 5-18 to 1-14, an unlucky ground for Kerry teams, as the U20 footballers also found out on Sunday. They were well beaten by Tyrone again at the semi-final stage in O’Moore Park. It was a big disappointment for the players and their manager, Tomás Ó Sé.
Kerry had plenty of scoring opportunities, but the returns were very poor. They were depending on Paddy Lane’s free-taking to stay in touch, but they were always chasing the game. It was very disappointing. For too long. Kerry have not won the U21, now U20, All-Ireland.
Better news for the Kerry minors who beat Clare on Monday evening last, 3-16 to 1-6, to qualify for the Munster final against Cork on May 23. Once again, the

It’s rare that the small guys or small counties have their glory by lifting silverware in Croke Park, but the Wee County of Louth, the smallest in the country, did just that on Sunday last, defeating Meath 3-14 to 1-18.
A massive crowd for a Leinster football final saw poetic justice delivered, an atonement for the fallout from the injustice of 15 years ago when a Joe Sheridan try ditched Louth. It was a try after all. Was it the first try ever at Croker, even before Shane Horgan delivered from that beautiful O'Gara cross kick?
Mind you, I do remember a Dublin corner
forward - was it Behan? - who headed a goal from a low cross in a Dublin league game in the late ‘60s, because he said afterwards it was easier than kicking a goal. Louth were robbed in 2010, and Meath unsparingly dug their heels in, so there was no replay.
I spoke with one proud Louth native, Eamon Cooney, who said: “The atmosphere in Croke Park was electric. The result could have gone either way, but Louth deserved the win after that awful decision allowing the Joe Sheridan effort to count as a goal.
“It was a wonderful victory for our men, especially when you consider that soccer is the number one game in Louth, thriving in former garrison towns such as Dundalk and Drogheda. It is only now that
very promising Gearóid White was the shining star.
The club scene is in full swing in Kerry, and there will be some changes to this weekend’s round of games to avoid a clash with the Kerry match. Check with your club for any updates on dates and times.
Elsewhere, a well-deserved award went to Danielle O’Leary who was named as the LGFA Player of the Month for April. The Rathmore forward, who claimed a first TG4 All-Star award last year, has carried that excellent form into the 2025 campaign with a series of outstanding displays. Her consistent high scoring propelled Kerry to win the National League, and that scoring form continues in the championship as Kerry bid to retain the Brendan Martin Cup.
Danielle was superb in the Division 1 final against Armagh on April 12 and in the championship games to date, she has scored 1-3 against Cork and 0-3 against Waterford.
Switching the racing, Rachael Blackmore announced her retirement as a jockey on Monday last after a successful career in which she won the Gold Cup and the Aintree Grand National – the first woman to do so in the 182-year history of the race.
“I feel the time is right,” she said. “I’m sad, but I’m also incredibly grateful for what my life has been for the past 16 years. I just feel so lucky to have been legged up on the horses I have, and to have experienced success I never even dreamt could be possible.”
Best wishes to Rachael, who was a regular competitor at the Killarney Races.
Even allowing for absentees, Kerry will have a strong line-up.
particularly to golf, and has been a winner on so many occasions. His home club is Laytown/Bettystown and he co-authored the history of that club – a club where Des Smith prospered.
The rugby season is coming to an end, so followers of the oval ball will look forward to the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia next month with 10 incredible matches over six spell-binding weeks.
These are the matches that define legends and create heroes. There is nothing like being a British & Irish Lion.
They will play test matches in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney and will be roared on by the legendary ‘Sea of Red’ – the biggest and most revered band of fans in world sport – who will swarm across Australia to create an atmosphere like no other.
What is remarkable is that three Kerry men, all from the same area in Currow/ Castleisland, toured with the Lions: Mick Doyle, Mick Galwey and Moss Keane. I was in contact with rugby pundit Jack McGowan for his observations on the Lions 2025. “It’s a far cry from the Lions tours in Tom Kiernan's time - the Cork man who won 54 caps for Ireland as a fullback between 1960 and 1973 and captained his country 24 times,” Jack noted.
“He toured with the Lions on two occasions, playing five times, when we saw the games courtesy of flickering Pathe News Reels in our local cinemas.
“Thursday's Tour launch was held in London's O2 Arena, where 2,000 fans paid £60 a head to see a farrago of a presentation, epitomising the commercialisation and greed to which the Lions project has descended. The Tour is projected to earn an overall profit of £12 million. Of that, £3-4 million will go to the Australian Rugby Union who are in dire financial straits. The players and supporting staff will be paid for the first time £100,000 each. The balance will be divided between the four Home Unions.

‘It’s a great night of entertainment’
Kerry FC media man Ivan happy to see Killarney faces at Mounthawk
I was delighted to see Kerry FC founded in 2023 and playing in the LOI, a welcome development showcasing soccer in Kerry. Mind you, it hasn't been plain sailing, but de réir a chéile it has developed exponentially.
Of great local Killarney interest has been the scoring exploits of brilliant striker, Ryan Kelliher, featured for a full profile in these pages last season.
Ivan Hurley, the ever helpful and efficient media officer for Kerry FC, for his observations on Kerry FC’s progress.
“The feeling is great amongst everyone in the club,” he said. “The fans have been excellent over the last few weeks when the team needed them the most.
As a Killarney man myself, it’s great to see the town’s people making the trip to Tralee on Friday nights, and I hope that upward turn continues!
Lansdowne to launch the tour is supposedly sold out with an average ticket in the Gods costing £180.
“If you fancy a trip to Aus to support the chaps, it will cost £7,000 for the three tests and £23,000 for all nine games.
Your observations, Jack, on the squad selection?
“Hansen, on his season's form, is very lucky, and James Ryan also. Tadhg Beirne will be a sure test starter. I really can't figure out why they are bringing Sexton. If Warren Gatland, four years ago, picked a squad loaded with Welsh, including backroom staff, we would have been raging. It will be interesting to read the English rugby scribes at the weekend, particularly Stephen Jones in the Sunday Times…”
Despite Munster’s poor form this season, you predicted some weeks ago that they would win their last two games to keep hopes alive. They won at Thomond Park on Friday last in pursuit of a top eight place in the URC and entrance to next season's European Cup will go down to the wire in Musgrave this Friday evening in the final round of the league against inform Italians, Benneton.
“Currently, they are in a qualifying position on 46 points in eighth place, just behind Benneton, also on 46 points, on points difference. Only Cardiff and Edinburgh can overtake them. The big danger are the Scots on 44 points, who are at home to Ulster also on Friday (today), and could garner five points, bringing them up to 49 as Ulster have nothing to play for. Cardiff play in South Africa against the Stormers and hopefully won't get any points.
“Thus, Benneton and Munster in Musgrave Park is the critical game with everything at stake for both. Munster must win and get at least three points to hold off the Scots. Fasten your seat belts; Munster must and will do it.
“Overall, I feel I might just be rooting for Joe Schmidt's team.”
Kerry have had many disappointing days, often edged out by a single goal, but recent results are very positive, especially those wins over UCD and Treaty United.
Two wins in a row and a big game this Friday evening versus Wexford should pack out Mounthawk Park. Kick-off is at 19.45, so get in early.
Earlier this week I was in contact with
“It’s a great night of entertainment. We’ve three games now before the summer break at the start of June, two of them at home.
“The appointment of Colin Healy as manager has taken all the headlines in the last week, so hopefully a couple of wins will shoot us up to the play-off places. We’re just four points behind at the moment.”
As another very successful basketball season draws to a close, members and officers of the St Paul’s club came together for an enjoyable awards night at the Fáilte Hotel in Killarney on Friday night.
Club President Christy Sheehan, founding member Tom Looney, Chairman Paul Sheehan and Ladies Committee Chairman Timmy O’Sullivan were on hand to present the crystal as several players and volunteers were honoured for their great service to the club over the past year.
Denise Dunlea was selected as Women’s Player of the Year after helping Paul’s to
reach the Super League final while Oisín Spring picked up the men’s equivalent on the back of some excellent performances in the National League.
Meanwhile, Leah McMahon was named Young Player of the Year with Mark Sheehan getting the nod for U20 Player of the Year. Stephen Brosnan and Vincent Barry earned Special Achievement awards for their stellar work throughout the campaign, Enda Walshe picked up the Club Person of the Year award, and Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan received an Outstanding Service award.
Also recognised was Supporter of the Year Pádraig Looney, represented on the night by his brother, Tom.
U13 GIRLS CUP SEMI-FINAL: Killarney Celtic 1-1 Killarney Athletic. Penalty Shootout: Celtic 2-4 Athletic. Roisin
O’Sullivan x 1. Shootout Scorers: Roisin
O’Sullivan, Elizabeth Brosnan, Regan O’Shea & Lucy Myles. Our U13 girls made the short trip to Celtic Tuesday evening and played out a tense encounter. Celtic started the better however our girls grew into the game and should have gone ahead when Leah was put through 1 on 1 and her shot sailed over the bar. Soon after this Celtic hit the front when a mix up in the Athletic box saw the Celtic striker head home. HT 1-0. Our girls came out firing in the second half and while there weren’t too many chances for either side, we were awarded a penalty when Erica was pulled back in the box when she was about to tap in a goal. Roisin stood up and made no mistake from the spot. Athletic fashioned a few half chances to get the winner but extra time could not separate these two teams, and the game went to a penalty shootout. Our girls made no mistake from the spot with Roisin, Elizabeth, Regan and Lucy all scoring excellent spot kicks to see us into the final 2-4. Thanks to Celtic for a sporting game and John for officiating on the day, it’s never easy to lose a game on penalties but we’re sure the young Celtic girls will come back stronger after. For our girls, it’s a cup final on Saturday to look forward to where we expect another fierce battle.
U14 TOM HAYES SHIELD QUARTER-FINAL: Dingle A 2-1 Killarney Athletic B. The lads exit the competition at the quarter-final stage. The boys have a lot to be proud of this season, huge improvements across the team with all players contributing.

U16 TUCKER KELLY CUP: Killarney Celtic 3-3 Killarney Athletic Celtic win on penalties. Luca Mosca 2, Samuel Scroope. Killarney Celtic U16A captured the Tucker Kelly Cup after a drama-filled final. After an even 1st half the teams retired to the break deadlocked at 0-0. Celtic opened the scoring after Samuel Scroope finished from close range. Athletic replied to level matters. Celtic were back in front through Luca Mosca who netted from close range following a cross from James Murphy. However Athletic responded again to level and then took the lead. With time
almost up Mark Looney played in Luca Mosca who finished to the net to send the game into extra time. Neither team could find a winner, so the final went to penalties. After 5 penalties each the score was tied at 4-4 and Ryan Lucey saved to give Celtic the advantage. Jack Culloty then scored to give Celtic the cup. Well done to the management and players.
U16 TUCKER KELLY SHIELD: LB Rovers
A 3-0 Killarney Celtic B. Celtic B went down to a strong LB Rovers side last weekend. Celtic started well and had chances to go in front, but it was LB who hit the front before half time. Celtic battled hard in the 2nd half but LB held firm and were able to extend their advantage to claim the win.
U14 TOM HAYES SHIELD: Castleisland B 1-5 Killarney Celtic B. OG, Sean Doyle 2, James Brosnan, Fionn Culloty.
LOTTO: There was no winner on Friday 9th May 2025 of the Jackpot €7,000. Numbers drawn were 01, 03, 12, 25. Consolation prizes of €50 went to Eileen Sheehan, Lyreatough; Eileen Crowley, Kilcummin; Dale McCarthy, Anabla; Sheila c/o Post Office. The next draw will be on Friday 16th May for Jackpot of €7,200.
SENIOR MEN: Nigel Shevlin’s side sit in second place in Division 1 of the County League following their latest win, this time over Beaufort on Sunday afternoon. Legion 0-20 Beaufort 2-8.
Team: Brian Kelly, Peter O’Sullivan, Danny Sheahan, Conor Gammell, Cian Gammell (0-2) Jonathon Lyne, Darragh Fleming, Colm O’Cuiv, Eoghan O’Sullivan (0-1), Finbarr Murphy (0-2), Peter McCarthy (0-1), Tom Benson, Josh Bowler, David O’Sullivan (0-3), Ryan O’Grady (0-10). Subs used: Brian Walsh for Josh Bowler, Oisin Fleming for David O’Sullivan, Denis Sheahan for Tom Benson, Darragh O’Doherty for Colm O’Cuiv, Mark Heffernan for Eoghan O’Sullivan.
U12 GIRLS: The first Go Games of 2025 for the U12 girls took place on Tuesday evening in Direen against Listowel Emmets. Two teams from both sides played out two great games of football on an excellent evening for football. Legion down a few girls due to other sporting commitments played their best and excellent football against an equally good and very impressive Listowel Emmets side. These games cannot take place without the referees who take up the whistle and huge thanks to Amy Walshe who again came to help out on the evening and did an excellent job.
FEILE GIRLS: Pride of place this week goes to the U15 team who have qualified for Feile, which takes place at the end of June. Pitted in the same group
as Ballymacelligott and Laune Rangers they overcame a hard-earned draw with Laune Rangers to beat the same opposition in the final. It promises to be an exciting build up to what is always a showpiece event. Results: Killarney Legion 2-10 Ballymac 0-2, Killarney Legion 1-7 Laune Rangers 0-10, Killarney Legion 2-3 Laune Rangers 1-5 (Final).
RESULTS: Credit Union Senior Football County League Round 6. Spa played Rathmore on Sunday last where they were beaten Rathmore 4-9 Spa 0-6. In round 7 Austin Stacks will travel to Spa on Sunday May 18th throw in at 2pm. Our Junior team narrowly lost to Ballymacelligott 1-11 to Spa 0-13.
LADIES: Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup Division 3 Round 7. The Spa Senior Ladies hosted Fossa today in the final round of the group stages in the Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup. Despite Spa getting a penalty in the opening minutes it was Fossa that opened the score line with Anne O’Shaughnessy making an excellent save for Fossa when Maireád Bennett stepped up to the spot. Spa’s Saoirse Kelly was very unlucky not to add to the score board with a couple of goal chances hitting the post and the rebounds were gathered up by Fossa. Fossa took all their scoring opportunities and had a healthy lead at half time 5-03 to 0-3. It was a better performance from Spa in the second half with subs making a great impact as well. Clare Murphy for Spa made her debut today and contributed brilliantly. Again Spa hit the posts twice and dropped one into the goalies hands while also hitting a couple of wides but they did manage to close a little scoring a goal and two points but Fossa were always in control and despite losing a player to a yellow card in the second half their work rate was immense and always seemed to have their support player. It was not the usual Spa ladies performance today, their decision making was poor at times, but they will regroup and come back stronger. There were a few injuries today on both sides and we wish every player a speedy recovery. Fossa won with a score of 6-06 to 1-05.
LOTTO: The numbers drawn on 11/05/2025 for a jackpot of €10,200 were 6, 18, 23, 24. There was no jackpot winner. The €40 consolation prize winners were Killian Lynch, Caroline Meehan, Cath O’Connor Firies, Siobhan Looney Gortroe, Tim Foley Barleymount. Tickets are available from our sellers and can also be bought online. COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 5: Fossa secured a valuable two points with a hardfought win over Kilgarvan on Sunday afternoon. Fossa ran out winners on a score of 2-13 to 0-17.
U14 CO LEAGUE ROUND 5: Fossa 5-15 Brosna/Knocknagoshel 5-04. Our Under 14 boys were back on road again as they made the long journey out to North Kerry to face Knock/Brosna in a crucial County League game. At half time the Fossa management rallied the troops as they knew they were now in a dog fight, away from home, with the local supporters getting louder by the minute. In the 2nd half Knock/Brosna struck early for their 3rd goal and this was immediately followed up with a 4th goal from the penalty spot. Fossa were now facing defeat in the face, but they responded brilliantly to a man. Ross Cronin scored an excellent goal from an acute angle and within minutes Gerry Moroney scored a bullet of a goal. Fossa were now in full swing and upped their performance immeasurably. Johnny Myers completed his hattrick with a 3rd goal and the biggest cheer of the night came when Gerry Moroney kicked the first 2 pointer of the season for the team with a booming kick from all of 45 yards. When excellent Cordal Referee Tim O’Donoghue blew his final whistle, Fossa had prevailed by 11 points on the scoreboard. Special mention to our defenders who held their opponents to four points for the entire game.
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 1: It was a 2-19 to 0-16 defeat for Kilcummin on Sunday last to table toppers Austin Stacks in Round 6 of the Credit Union County Football league. Kilcummin never recovered from the concession of two goals inside the opening 5 minutes to trail 2-9 to 0-9 at the break despite closing to gap to just two points at one point in the opening half. Next up is a crucial home tie against Glenbeigh/ Glencar on Sunday 18th May with a 3pm throw in. Please come out and support the team.
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 7B: Meanwhile in Division 7B Kilcummin were awarded a walkover from Desmond’s B to remain on top of the table ahead of next Sunday’s top of the table clash with Ballydonoghue who currently sit second in the division. PAUL EGAN RIP: The club received the devastating news last weekend that Paul Egan had passed away. Paul has been a key part of the club for the last 20 years. He was always looking at ways to improve equipment, helping with repairs and there to help when needed. He was gifted with his hands and mind and was an expert in working with all materials. He’s done countless repairs and maintenance over the years, he built the new gates on the boathouse, he repaired the one design in 2023 and without that we wouldn’t have won the All-Ireland, after the boat got damaged he did a full rebuild last year giving months of his time to complete it. This work was key to allowing us to bring underage crews back to the shore. He loved seeing his daughter Mairead in the crew that relaunched the boat last year, and that crew went on to win the Kerry Championships. Paul didn’t want any credit or attention for the work. He preferred to stay in the background, so not many people realise the amount of work he was doing for the club. Fossa Rowing Club has lost a great friend.
DARKNESS INTO LIGHT: Well done to everyone who took part in the Darkness into Light last Saturday morning. We met at 4:15am at the Gap Road Cross and walked to the lakeshore culminating in a wonderful dawn lit row to see in another beautiful day and support a very worthy cause. Thanks to all who took part.

MAYFLY: We are also at the time of the year when the Mayfly hatch occurs, and anglers are reminded that we will be assisting in the national survey of the species. To this end, Club Secretary will have sample vials at Sunday’s competition, that can be taken by members and any spent Mayfly specimen found can be safely stored in them and sent then for examination and identification. It will be great to establish how many species we have present on the lakes.
