Killarney Outlet Centre close to being sold Killarney Outlet Centre could change hands in the next few weeks, the Killarney Advertiser understands. | By Sean Moriarty The shopping centre on the lower Park Road has been on the market since 2016. At this time it was expected to fetch €11.5 million but the market and economy changed dramatically since then.

Killarney Outlet Centre is owned by Dublin-based Green Property and the sale is been handled by property advisors CBRE. It is understood that a consortium of Killarney-based businessmen have placed a substantial bid for the property.

Green Property refused to comment on the finer details of the potential sale but told The Killarney Advertiser that they were negotiating a contract of sale with a buyer and that a sale was “fairly close”.

The 8,407 square metre property com-

prises of 39 retail units with Kerry GAA, Costa Coffee and Nike Sports amongst the tenants occupying the 20 ground floor units.

There are further 18 units on the upper floor along with public toilet facilities

and office space.

Last November the centre celebrated 20 years in business.

“We are for sale, after that I cannot comment,” said Centre Manager Paul Sherry.

Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre future under threat A Killarney family resource centre is one of many across the county under threat due to poor Government management - it has been claimed.

The Family Resource Centre National Forum this week launched a campaign calling on General Election candidates to pledge their support to FRCs. They say there’s a lack of core funding for FRC’s and are calling on the newly elected Government to create a dedicated support unit.

Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre is one of several such centres in the county that is under threat as there is no dedicated Government department fund to administer such services.

The Family Resource Centre programme has been in operation for over 25 years, and is currently housed within Tusla, the Child and Family Agency.

“All of this means FRCs are now at a critical juncture,” Jackie Landers, who has been appointed spokesperson for all 12 FRCs throughout Kerry, said.

“Without political commitment and will to copper-fasten our future, families and communities in Kerry – and nationwide – will suffer.”

Dr Crokes plan €500k expansion | By Sean Moriarty Dr Crokes GAA Club have announced a €500,000 investment at their Lewis Road clubhouse and grounds.

Plans for phase two and three of its development include the upgrading of the clubhouse, new media and broadcast facilities in the grandstand, and the addition of a third floodlit playing and training pitch.

Parts of phase one, which included the extension of the training pitch, new gym facilities, upgrading dressing rooms and the sanding and the re-sodding of the main pitch were completed last year.

Priority now turns to the second part the refurbishment of the clubhouse.

Phase three includes the installation

of media and broadcast facilities in the main stand.

The final and most expensive phase will be the construction of a third playing and training pitch, including floodlights in the north east corner of the grounds. This is expected to cost around €300,000.

“We are always improving,” Vince Casey, Chairman of Dr Crokes Fundraising Committee, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our ultimate plan is the third playing pitch. We keep investing and take pride in what we do. The clubhouse is over 20-years-old and needs insulation and other upgrades.

It is used by the club, not just players, for example we have card games there every Wednesday night, so it’s an important part of the social aspect of the community.”

NCT confusion following nationwide test lift failures Killarney motorists could face weeks of driving around in potentially dangerous cars after the National Car Test Service made the decision to temporarily discontinue the use of vehicle inspection lifts in 47 centres nationwide.

| By Sean Moriarty However, the National Car Test Service is advising owners to continue attending their scheduled appointments – following the discovery of defective lifts in Northern Ireland on Monday.

Full inspections will not be carried out until lifts in all 47 centres across Ireland, including Killarney, are checked.

Drivers are advised to book their NCT

as normal.

“All customers should continue to book and turn up for their NCT as normal.

The test will be completed with the omission of the underbody inspection, which will be conducted at a later date when the lifts are returned to use. All other elements of the test including lights, emissions, upper body exterior, vehicle interior, brakes, suspension and wheel alignment will be tested as nor-

mal,” a statement said.

One local garage owner, who brings several cars a week to the NCT test centre in Killarney, raised concerns about potentially dangerous cars being allowed on the road and that people need to be informed on where they stand if they were stopped by An Garda Siochana. Driving a car without a valid NCT cert carries a €2,000 fine and up to five penalty points.

“The RSA are the ones stopping drivers to check for certs and now they can’t offer a proper test,” said the wellknown car dealer, who did not want to be named. “What happens if there is an accident, will your insurance cover you? How can you tell if a car is roadworthy or if it has bits falling off it without a proper test.”

The RSA put the onus of roadworthiness back on the owner or driver and said that it did write to An Garda Siochana explaining the issues.

“The RSA have made the Gardaí aware of the issue and is liaising with them on any potential issues arising. All vehicle owners are reminded that the roadworthiness of their vehicle is their responsibility at all times not just at the NCT,” said the statement.

However, Killarney Gardai confirmed that they have not been briefed on the matter.

“We have not been given any direction,” said a station officer when contacted by the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. “Drivers need to appear for the test anyway.”

St Mary of the Angels face funding cuts | By Sean Moriarty A second Kerry-based disability care provider - St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort - will be forced to cut services after the HSE announced a county-wide cut of €160,000.

Last week the Killarney Advertiser revealed that Kerry Parents and Friends, which cares for 270 special needs patients, and is headquartered in Killarney, was left with a €60,000 shortfall in funding.

The Beaufort facility is home to 76 people with physical and intellectual disabilities.

Many residents have been living there for most of their lives.

It was founded by the Franciscan Sisters in 1968 on land donated to them by local couple Denis and Mary Doyle.

It is currently operated by St John of God Kerry Services which provides training, employment, social and residential programmes for over 300 children and adults.

As well as St Mary of the Angels in Beau-

fort, St John of God also operate in Cahersiveen, Castleisland, Dingle, Kenmare, Killarney, Killorglin, Listowel and Tralee.

“In 2009, our annual HSE Allocation was €17.2m,” Claire O’Dwyer, General Manager St John of God Kerry Services, told the Killarney Advertiser.

“In 2019 the allocation was €16.9m. Yet over this 10 year period, the level of service provided in Kerry grew significantly with a new day centre opening in Tralee

and expansions in Listowel, Killarney and Killorglin.

“Over the last two years we have suffered further significant cuts totalling €272,000 and a further cut of €160,000 has been imposed for 2020. These cuts have been a significant contributor to our financial deficit which has come in at €1.25m for each of the last two years.

“Yet at the same time, we are obligated by the standards regulator HIQA to meet the appropriate number, qualifications

and mix of staff required for the number of residents, their needs and the size of the our centre at Beaufort. For these reasons, we are deeply concerned over this latest cut which will result in a reduction of existing service provision.”

St John of God Kerry is backing the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies campaign to reverse the €20m cut that has been imposed on the disability sector nationally ahead of next Saturday’s General Election.

Beekeeper course planned in Killarney | By Michelle Crean

Aspiring beekeepers and beginners alike are being invited to participate in the upcoming Kerry Beekeepers’ Beginner’s Course 2020.

Students plan sleepout to help the homeless

The programme, which takes place throughout February and March, will include an educational talk presented by a competent beekeeper followed by interactive discussion and a cup of tea/coffee.

The facilitator is Pat Curran, a South Kerry commercial beekeeper Sun Hill Honey, Tim Regan, Kerry Beekeepers’ Association Chair, explained.

“Pat is a most experienced practical beekeeper who will begin by introducing participants to the bee hive and the different bees that live within. He will also share his depth of knowledge, experiences and discuss beekeeper tasks for each month.”

The course begins on Thursday, February 20, and continues on Thursday, February 27, March 5, 12 and 19.

“Participants will be able to acquire hives of bees at the end of the series of talks if required,” he said.

“If you are interested please register and come along to our series of lectures from 7.30 – 9pm at the Teagasc Offices, Cleeney, Tralee Road, Killarney where you will get a warm welcome.”

Registration fee is €75, and includes the course, beginners book and membership of the Kerry Beekeepers’ Association which includes bee insurance for 2020.

The number of places is limited to 30 on a first come first served basis.

Killarney students are hoping the cold and rain stays away tonight (Friday) – as they complete a full night’s sleepout for the homeless. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy From 11pm to 7am TY students at St Brigid’s Secondary School will sleep outside their school to raise vital funds for St Vincent De Paul and Novas while also raising awareness of homelessness within the school community.

“They will experience some of the challenges faced by those who are homeless by sleeping outside our school building, but still on school grounds for safety reasons, with only a sleeping bag and cardboard to lie on,” teacher Stephanie Horan told the Killarney Advertiser.

“This really is a fantastic group activity where TY students have worked to-

gether to organise the sleepout, fundraise and have an enlightening experience. They have shown a huge capacity for empathy, knowing that so many are touched by homelessness in Ireland.”

The students went on a school tour to Dublin and had encountered homelessness, she added.

“They want to build empathy and awareness of the hardships endured by people who are homeless. One half of my TY Religion class is organising it, but all 60 TY students will participate. The other half of my TY class organised the ‘Dignity Pack’ appeal before Christmas which was very successful. I am a very proud teacher.”

Over 30 charges struck out in Ballyspillane feud case Over 30 charges were struck out and a number of convictions not proceeded with after several women - representing both sides of an ongoing Killarney "feud" - withdrew complaints against each other at a special sitting of Killarney District Court yesterday (Thursday).

A large garda presence and a number of garda vans secured the court. The parties left by separate entrances.

Solicitor for six of the accused, Padraig O’Connell, welcomed what he described as “a period of rapprochement”.

Mr O’Connell described the striking out of 30 charges as “an opportunity to let the dust settle”.

A recent charge alleging a threat to kill against a man known as “Sexy” is proceeding, the court heard.

The special sitting is the second such involving the dispute between a num-

ber of closely connected families in Hazlewood Drive and Ballyspillane area of Killarney.

Last November a case before the Circuit Court in Tralee was told the feud was sparked by a row over a bouncy castle in May 2018 during a First Holy Communion gathering of closely connected families, some of them related.

The charges struck out yesterday include public order, road traffic, and assault in a dispute which had spilled over into nightclubs and shops in Killarney.

The special sitting in December, heard

how traffic had come to a halt in Upper Park Road in the “feud” with females fighting and how people in Ballyspillane needed to walk around their estate with CCTV, such was the threat level between families.

Inspector John Kelly asked each of the eight women withdrawing charges yesterday if they were doing so out of their own “free will” and they each replied this was the case. Judge Waters also satisfied himself the complainants had not been under pressure to withdraw evidence. The State also withdrew a number of charges.

Convictions against two women in December were also not proceeded with and no sentence handed down.

Inspector Kelly said gardai wanted to reassure the public that they were maintaining a presence in Ballyspillane and

31.1.2020 any incidents or infringement would be met with the full rigour of the law.

A fresh allegation of a threat to kill by 34-year-old Daniel O’Brien of Piercetown, Newbridge, Co Kildare, is to proceed, the court heard.

Mr O’Brien is alleged to have made a threat to kill or cause serious harm to Patrick O’Brien (otherwise known as Sexy) and this threat was made to Margaret Avanzo intending her to believe it would be carried out on December 22 last at Ballyspillane, Killarney.

He made “no reply” when charged on Thursday, the court heard.

Ms Avanzo was not withdrawing her evidence, the court heard.

However, Inspector John Kelly said “conscious of what has gone on here this morning” the State would not seek to remand Mr O'Brien in custody and would be seeking conditions attached to bail.

Judge David Waters remanded Daniel O'Brien to appear again on March 3. The conditions include that he is to abide by a curfew in Kildare and is not to enter Kerry unless in connection with his case.

His solicitor Padraig O’Connell assured Judge Waters his client “will leave Killarney once the bond is signed”.

Sliabh Luachra Drama Group presents its 19th production | By Sean Moriarty Sliabh Luachra Drama Group has issued a ‘Red Alert Laughter” warning ahead of its staging of the 'It’s The Real McCoy'.

Tommy Marren’s play is a hilarious three act comedy set in rural Ireland in 1964.

‘The Real McCoy' will start tonight (Friday) and will also run this Saturday and Sunday night and again next weekend until February 9 at the Heritage Centre in Scartaglen.

It tells the story of two dramatic days in the life of Madge Molloy who has lived over four decades of her life wondering why her husband of only four months vanished without a trace.

The arrival to the parish of a new curate

Fr Micheal McCoy is about to throw new light on the reasons why her husband Tom Molloy left, and what unfolds is a series of events that will have you in tears of laughter.

“This is our 19th production and we feel privileged to have been able to take on a wide variety of plays with great stories and themes down through the years,” Moira Hughes, who plays Madge Molloy in the play, said.

“We are delighted to be taking on such a fantastic play this year that will be thoroughly enjoyed by a wide audience of both young and old! People love to have a good laugh this time of the year and this play with his amazing wit and unique and gripping storyline makes it just the play that people will thoroughly enjoy from beginning to end.”

Tributes have been paid to Denny Lucey, of Lisbabe, Headford, who died this week after an illness.

Denny was well-known in community circles, particularly in Barraduff and Glenflesk where he was active local volunteer.

He was a very active member of Glenflesk GAA and held several committee roles, including senior team trainer over the years.

“All in Glenflesk GAA are deeply saddened by the passing away of our club mate Denis Lucey,” Club Chairman Tim Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser.

“A tenacious corner back at underage for Glenflesk, his sons, Danny and Sean, have followed in his footsteps and are current seniors with the club. He had huge commitment to the community.”

The self-employed plant hire operator was one of the key people behind the Barraduff Community Field and if there was any digging to be done, Denny was the man to do it.

“Den was very much a peoples’ person, he loved to chat and banter and was always in great humour,” said a social media post by the Barraduff Community Field Organisation. “He loved his football and music in his spare time and gave up to 20 years of volunteering to

the Barraduff Community Field committee and played a big part in its overall success. Den was always a very proud Lisbabe man, but he had great passion for the Barraduff community project.”

Another project close to his heart was the Barraduff Tidy Village Group.

He is survived by his wife Margaret (O’Mahony), sons Danny and Sean, his parents Mary and Dan Joe, sisters Sheila (O’Connor) and Bernardine (Roche), brothers Patrick and Daniel, nephews, nieces, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and extended family and friends.

Denny was laid to rest on Wednesday morning at Killaha Cemetery following Funeral Mass at the Sacred Heart Church in Barraduff.

Bertie’s remarks made me suspect something else - Michéal Martin is fired up by the partnership deal he has made with SDLP when he snipes at Sinn Féin!

Our National Park is grossly underfunded The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in Dublin must have been reading this column.

Dealing with modern Ireland

They tell me, by way of other matters, they are concerned about a rise in vehicular traffic and are looking at access protocols. The Park as we know is meant to be a biosphere reserve, and it is little more than a joke if cars and buses are allowed through it in numbers.

“The NPWS have become aware of an apparent increase in the use of certain areas of the National Park by vehicular traffic in recent times. Our local management are currently examining the situation and intend to review the access protocols and the scope to improve the access barriers on site,” they tell me.

They have also come back to me on the closure of Killarney House and Gardens over Christmas. It was closed to the public on December 24, 25, 26, 27 and 28 and New Year’s Day, they confirm.

But it was open to the public every other day and all other areas of the Park were open, they said.

Our National Park, the first in the country, is grossly underfunded.

The overall budget it shares with everyone else in the division which includes Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, and Waterford is less than a million euro plus wage costs. This is the same as 2019, not a penny more. Could we have this as an election issue please?

And meanwhile, the cocaine that is so prevalent and tearing our society apart is coming in by the container load and openly sold in streets, clubs, colleges, court houses and theatres.

We need strong leadership but we also need a lot more humanity. There is hope: If this election ends up all over the place the edges will have to be taken off the old governing parties, and we might end up with something better than merely an “open economy”.

Mr Ahern said he had been in favour of a Fianna Fáil/SDLP partnership “all the time”.

He said he was a supporter of the Fianna Fáil/SDLP “position where ever it goes into the future”.

Veganuary event creates a buzz in The Brehon

Movie lovers are invited to come along on Friday, February 7, at 8.30pm to watch Icelandic comedy-drama ‘Woman at War’, rated 12A. As the authorities intensify their campaign to catch her she receives an update on a long forgotten adoption application - she has been matched with a four-year-old girl in Ukraine. Can she reconcile this with her crusade to protect her homeland from big industry or will her efforts destroy her chances of finally becoming a mother?

A funny, moving and utterly unique film with a strong lead performance from Halldora Geirhardsdottir as Halla. “‘Woman at War’ won ‘Best Screenplay’ at the Critics’ Week of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival,” Hazel Joy from Beaufort Film Night said.

“It also won the 2018 LUX Film Prize, the European Parliament’s prize for films that go to the heart of European public debate.”

Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts who work in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings.

Admission to the film is €7 which will go towards covering the motion picture licencing fee and the newly purchased screen.

There was a very exciting buzz at one Killarney hotel on Saturday evening as it held its first Veganuary event as a way to promote and educate the vegan lifestyle. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Up to 50 diners, who were seated at tables of 10, tucked into some delicious dishes at The Brehon Hotel. It was all part of the Veganuary event organised by the hotel’s Head Chef Chad Byrne.

The night came about following a challenge by local chefs, Chad Byrne, Dan Moynihan and Abraham Nur (The Brehon Hotel), John Drummond (The Gleneagle Hotel) and Cyrille Durand (The Dromhall Hotel), who gave up meat and dairy for the month.

On the night, guests enjoyed a special five course meal, and talks by health

expert Dr Ailis Brosnan and Louise Kelly, who runs popular blog ‘I’m a Little Vegan’.

According to chef Chad Byrne, the event was “brilliant”.

“It was a really great night, with over 50 guests,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It was great craic. Louise Kelly did one course which was a South Pacific dish with some Thai elements. It was fully immersive where guests from each table could even roll their own spring roll.”

€30k of drugs seized in Rathmore Gardaí have seized €30,000 of suspected drugs following a search at a house in Rathmore.

At approximately 7pm on Friday last, Gardaí from Millstreet execut-

ed a search warrant at a house in the Rathmore area.

During the course of the search Gardaí seized suspected cocaine worth €27,000 and suspected cannabis herb worth €3,000.

Gold medals for tourism providers Three Killarney-based tourist industry providers were celebrating this week after taking Gold Medals at the CIE Tours International Annual Awards for Excellence. | By Sean Moriarty The awards. which are now in their 30th year, recognise the best hotels and tourist attractions across Ireland based on feedback from over 25,000 customers

31.1.2020 It was a special night for Geraldine Rosney of Killeen House Hotel who won her 29th Gold Award in the Special Dinner Feature category. Geraldine has won the award every year except one, since the Awards were first presented 30 years ago.

Cahernane House Hotel won the Gold Award in the Best Hotel Service and Hospitality category while Killarney Horse and Carriage Tours won a Gold Award and was named Best Tour Feature by CIE Tours visitors.

New Kerry Tourism Industry Federation launched A Killarney man has been elected as the first chairperson of the newly founded Kerry Tourism Industry Federation.

The new federation, which includes representative bodies from all sectors of the tourism industry, including hotel and vintner associations, town chambers from across the county and area marketing alliances have been included in the new group.

The group’s aim is to give Kerry a collective voice when it comes to promoting the county as a destination.

Former Liebherr Container Cranes managing director Pat O’Leary is the new federation’s chair after its first meeting in Killarney this week.

“Greater cohesiveness and collaboration within the tourism industry will strengthen the tourism offering of the county. With this in mind, we have established the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation to act as a collective voice for everyone with a vested interest in tourism,” he said.

“By thinking and working together

we will be better positioned to share information and learnings, we will be better equipped to liaise with government bodies, and we can ensure that all areas of the county are represented and heard. We are satisfied that the full board is reflective of the geographic spread and sectoral diversity within the tourism industry in County Kerry.”

The Kerry Tourism Industry Federation was conceived from an all-county, open forum for employers and business people with a vested interest in the development and sustainability of tourism in Kerry.

The elected board members of the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) are Pat O’Leary, nominated by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce; John Edwards, nominated by Tralee Chamber Alliance; Gary Curran, nominated by Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance; Helen McDwyer, nominated by

Kenmare Chamber of Commerce and Tourism; Patrick O’Donoghue, nominated by the IHF Kerry Branch; Tracy Coyne, nominated by the IHF Kerry Branch; and Michael McCarthy, nominated by the Kerry branch of the Restaurants Association of Ireland.

Fundraising dance for ‘Tiny Dancer’ Chloe Tomorrow (Saturday) The Manor Inn Killorglin will host a fundraising dance to raise much needed funds for ‘Chloe’s Journey’ and her family.

In March 2019, 14-month-old Chloe Jenkins was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma; a very rare aggressive child cancer and one of the hardest cancers to cure. Chloe lives in Cork with mom Deborah who hails from Killorglin, and dad Gareth from Dublin.

Chloe immediately started intense chemotherapy in Crumlin followed by surgery in September 2019 when her left kidney and 85 percent of the tumour was removed. She was fortunate to be accepted on a months specialised treatment plan in Germany in November 2019 and is now back home and attending Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin for further treatment.

Chloe’s family formed a committee setting up ‘Chloe’s Journey’ to try to generate funds to help with Chloe’s ongoing care to alleviate some of the financial costs associated with caring for a seriously ill child to help with travel, accommodation and living expenses involved in multiple hospital stays and clinics.

Lucky Ger Somers to donate some of his winnings to charity The Rathmore man who won €33,000 on the National Lottery’s TV game show ‘Winning Streak’ last Saturday will donate some of his winnings to the Kerry Cork Health Link bus. | By Sean Moriarty The well-known local rally competitor learned of his selection for the TV game show while attending a neighbours birthday party the weekend before.

“I know a lot of people locally, family and friends who use the bus,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

Ger has his mother Síle to thank for his Winning Streak appearance as she gifted him the scratch card in his Christmas card.

She was in the audience in RTE last weekend cheering him along with his partner Jean, his son Colin and other

members of his family including his brother Kieran and his partner Jenny Friel and their daughter Feithlenn, his sister Kathryn and her partner John Paul Lyne.

The show is pre-recorded so Ger and his supporters faced a dash across Dublin so they could get from the RTE studio in Donnybrook back to the City West Hotel in time to watch the Kerry v Dublin game on television.

“We were finished in RTE around quarter to six,” he added. “We were watching the match up around half eight when Winning Streak came on and we were working off two televisions for a while. “

The delegation is being led by Michael O’Donoghue, of the O’Donoghue-Ring Group. The Killarney visitors met Mayor of Scottsdale, Jim Lane.

Killarney in August and it is hoped that the two groups will set up a student golf tournament and exchange programme between the two towns.

“The Killarney team in Scottsdale will, no doubt, do a top class job promoting our town,” said Sean Counihan, Chairman of the Killarney Town Twinning and Sister City Association. “The group will exchange views on how our associations can blossom in the area of education, commerce and tourism, especially. golf tourism.”

Mary Lou was in Killarney for an interview with Radio Kerry, followed by a trip to Tralee and Lyreacrompane, while canvassing with Sinn Féin’s General Election candidate, Cllr. Pa Daly.

“There has been a huge human cost to the CervicalCheck scandal and many families are today without a loved one, or dealing with the realities of a cancer diagnosis,” Mary Lou McDonald said.

“The shadow of the scandal has hung over the health service and Irish society for these past few years. We owe it to the women affected and their families to change the system for the better, and this must involve bringing the smear testing process back home to Ireland.

“The outsourcing of the testing process has been a problem, and we have seen issues around labs being added to the CervicalCheck programme without proper checks or operational due diligence being carried out.

“Outsourcing also played a part in the further mistakes that were made as regards

delays of tests and the issuing of results; all of which caused further distress for women.

“It is vitally important that we have our own national screening laboratory service for CervicalCheck.”

This will be a graduated process, she added.

“We will allocate €16 million to this, placing a focus on recruitment and training of specialist staff and equipping labs to the highest possible standard.

“The priority must be to ensure that women have the highest level of confidence in the screening process and we can achieve this through common-sense reforms.”

She added that we must show that we have learned from the scandal.

On Friday, she handed the proceeds to this year’s selected charity Comfort for Chemo Kerry.

“The community spirit was amazing,” Gina told the Killarney Advertiser.

“I received huge support from the 170 ladies who turned up and danced the night away while they had fun raising funds for a fantastic cause. There was amazing door prizes and raffle prizes all donated by businesses and locals. People are so generous and giving.”

Comfort for Chemo Kerry are a local charity on a mission to raise €5m to build a state-of-the-art new separate chemotherapy unit for the people of Kerry and west Limerick.

“I was absolutely thrilled to present this cheque to Brid O’Connor from the charity.

Last year’s and this year’s Little Women’s Christmas fundraising event was such a huge success that I have already booked the event again for next year, and please God it will raise more funds for this fantastic charity.”

Killarney youth commended at Kerry Garda Awards Students from Killarney Community College were among the winners of annual Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. | By Sean Moriarty The youngsters from Killarney Community College won one of two group awards at the awards ceremony at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee last Friday night, for their project ‘Be Dementia Aware’.

The main aim of ‘Be Dementia Aware’ is to raise awareness about dementia and how it effects families.

The students created and have actively used a number of different social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to publicise their awareness campaign throughout the year.

“In times where our young people are facing significant challenges, it is inspiring to see them giving back to their own communities through voluntary work, sport or educational achievements,” said Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster.

“The Youth Achievement Awards gives An Garda Síochána an opportunity to engage with young people in a positive fashion and recognise these positive interactions for the betterment of the community as a whole.”

A total of 20 Twenty Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Merit Award Certificates were presented to individuals who have made a positive contribution to their community and make it a better place to live.

Six of these were from the greater Killarney area. The recipients were: Kacper Bogalecki, Daniel Cremin, Sinead Gleeson, Michael Horgan, Clodagh O’Connor and Harry White.

The awards scheme which first commenced in 1998 are held for youths between the ages of 13 and 21-years and recognise the great contribution young people have made and continue to make to their communities in Kerry.

Friary staff and volunteers celebrate another great year | By Sean Moriarty Staff and volunteers from the Friary enjoyed their annual night out at the Killarney Oaks Hotel on Saturday night.

The annual party is the Franciscan Friars way of thanking the many people who help keep the Friary running every year.

Saturday nights party was attended by over 60 people and included staff from the administration office, the book shop staff and gardeners.

“Every year we hold our annual dinner to thank the staff and volunteers for their work,” Fr Anthony Jukes, the House Vicar, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We really could not run the place without them and we run this as a thank you. It was a wonderful evening and there was a great atmosphere amongst our staff and volunteers that ended with a sing-song.”

Vintage club hands over €27k to local charities Killarney Valley Classic Club handed over €27,000 to the five different charities that it supported last year.

The club undertook several major fundraising drives in the last year including a tractor raffle and a charity walk.

The club restored a Ford 2600 tractor that was owned and operated by the Great Southern Hotel group and raffled it to raise funds for Act for Meningitis (Kerry Branch) and The Killarney Micro Track Project.

It also runs a charity walk along the Old Kenmare Road every Christmas and the benefactors of the 2018 walk were The Ian O’Connell Trust and The Louise Lynch Hospital and Rehab Fund. Money raised during the most recent Christmas walk will be added to the 2020 funds for distribution this time next year.

Last Sunday the club took a stand at the

Killarney Lions Club organised Kerry Clubs Fair and used the opportunity to present cheques to two of the five local charities.

Siobhan Wharton collected the cheque on behalf of Act for Meningitis while Jerry Griffin was on hand to accept the presentation on behalf of The Killarney Micro Track Project.

“We have a strict selection process and work with charities who work with us and help us sell tickets during the year,” PRO Tom Leslie told the Killarney Advertiser.

“We are taking break this year from selling tickets and will be back with a new raffle project next year. Over the years over €300,000 has been donated to local charities.”

The fifth charity to benefit is the Kerry Mental Health Association that owns the Men’s Shed on the Lewis Road where the club does most of its car and tractor restoration work.

All Ireland Scor finals taking place in Killarney There is plenty of local interest in this weekend’s All Ireland Scor Na nOg finals which are taking place at the Gleneagle INEC Arena tomorrow (Saturday).

Spa GAA Club are in the last 12 of the quiz category. The Killarney-based club has a great track record in this category, having last won the overall competition in 2016.

Spa East Kerry Board team is made up of Emer O’Keeffe, Ian Coffey, Sean Hickey and Donal Hickey and they are in action just after 11am on Saturday morning.

Later in the day, the Glenflesk Ballad Group will be hoping to be the first Kerry club to win the Ballad Group National title.

The Glenflesk team is: Eabha Ni Ealaithe, Sinead Ni Ghliosain, Caitlin Ni Chroinin, Sorcha Ni Mhorain and Mallaidh Ni Dhon-

nchu.

Glenflesk has previously enjoyed great success in the music and dance categories and are previous All-Ireland winners in Figure Dancing, Solo Singing and Recitation.

“Huge congratulations to our five club members who have made the All-Ireland final, it is a special occasion for the club and we are only one of three in the county to make the final,” Glenflesk GAA Chairman Tim Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “Special thanks to Paud O’Donoghue and Rosie Healy who coached and supported our members to get them this far.

The weekend will start with a concert that “represents all things Scor” in the Gleneagle Hotel tonight (Friday).

Tickets for tomorrow’s event can be purchased at the door and cost €25.

United Ireland closer than ever but not inevitable A United Ireland is closer than it has ever been but it’s not inevitable, according to The Rt. Hon. Carwyn Jones AM, the First Minister in the Welsh Assembly from 2008 to 2018.

Mr Jones was one of the speakers during the morning session at the third Annual Killarney Economic Conference at The Brehon Hotel.

The former Welsh First Minister, Carwyn Jones, spoke at length in relation to Northern Ireland: “There are still

some issues that people need to see resolved, it’s [a united Ireland] closer than it’s been but I don’t think we’re in a position where people would vote for it in Northern Ireland. On the question of whether the Republic could want or afford the North, I don’t think there would be a choice emotionally. The reality is that if there was a vote [on reunification] it’s inevitable the people would want to see a united Ireland which was always a core part of the establishment of the State in the 1920s.

Fair brings clubs and volunteers together

| By Sean Moriarty The second annual Kerry Clubs Fair which took place at Killarney Racecourse last Sunday was deemed a success by event organisers.

Killarney Lions Club invited clubs and organisations to showcase their events and activities at the specially organised exhibition that took place in one of the upstairs functions rooms within the grandstands of Killarney Racecourse.

A total of 56 clubs, six more than last year took part in the event.

Over 700 people passed through the door during a busy afternoon. Clubs on show were wide ranging and included sporting organisations like Dr Crokes GAA Club, The Kerry Canoe Club, Killar-

ney Cycling Club.

Business groups like the Lions Club and the Killarney Chapter of BNI added a different element to the show while volunteering opportunities through groups like the local branch of the Irish Kidney Association were also possible.

“It was a very good day and we were very happy with the turnout,” Lions Club member and organising committee member Ronan Lyons told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our aim was to bring people and clubs together. I know a lot of the clubs did some networking amongst themselves, many were able to promote what they do and even get new memberships and I am sure there will be a lot of following up done over the next few weeks.”

Fianna Fáil/Sinn Féin coalition can't work says Bertie Ahern Bertie Ahern has said a future coalition between Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin would have an impact on any future alliance between his former party and the SDLP in Northern Ireland.

Speaking at the third annual Killarney Economic Conference at The Brehon in Killarney last Friday and prior to hearing the news of the death of the former SDLP Leader, Seamus Mallon, Mr Ahern said he was always in favour of an all-island alliance between Fianna Fáil and the SDLP. He said such a move had the backing of unionist parties in the North and it was a relationship he tried to build-up 20 years ago.

“There is an alliance of sorts [with the SDLP] and Fianna people canvassed very heavily for the SDLP in the last [UK] General Election. I know there are differences in the SDLP about that alliance too.

“But I can imagine what those on the

Fianna Fáil side of the argument would think if Fianna Fáil were then working with Sinn Féin.

“I think the best thing on all of this, is that people change their minds very rapidly in elections so we’ll wait until mid-February, see what the numbers look like and then we’ll see how the cards are played, but it’s an issue we will be talking about next month,” said Bertie Ahern.

The Fianna Fáil Leader, Mícheál Martin has repeatedly ruled out going into coalition with Sinn Féin after the General Election on February 8.

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern took part in a panel discussion on the future of the Good Friday Agreement at the Killarney Economic Conference.

He called for an in-depth study of how the whole system of a United Ireland would work but he said he disagreed with any suggestion to call a Border Poll in the near future.

Baby Lily’s big day out The Breen family from Sneem and the Murphy family from Ballydesmond came together on Saturday to celebrate the christening of baby Lily Murphy-Breen.

After the ceremony at the Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart in Kiskeam the two families made their way to the Oaks Hotel in Killarney to continue the celebration.

Proud parents Muireann Murphy and Gavin Breen celebrated the christening of their first-born in fine style following Lily's arrival to their lives on November

18, 2018.

It was a memorable day too for grandparents Sean and Ann Murphy and Evelyn and Danny Breen.

Godparents were Muireanns sister Katie and Gavin’s brother Ryan.

“It was a great day making memories,” Muireann said.

Retired garda celebrates 80th birthday in style

For over 20 years Jack McGrath was one of the most familiar faces on the streets of Killarney and he still is given his involvement in so many community events.

Former Garda Sergeant Jack McGrath celebrated his 80th birthday at the Oaks Hotel on Saturday night.

The Clonmel native arrived in Beaufort in 1973, shortly after being promoted to Sergeant from his former barracks in Cork city.

His was transferred to Killarney Garda station in 1977 and became a popular and integral part of the community until his retirement in 1997.

He level of activity within the community knows no bounds, during his time with An Garda Siochana, he was heavily involved in Kerry Mountain Rescue.

His other passion was local GAA and he trained the Beaufort football team for many years in the 1980s and 1990s.

One of his prouder moments was the club’s All-Ireland Junior football final success last season – he was the club’s president when they lifted the All-Ireland title in Croke Park.

Saturday night was all about family and friends.

Hs brother Paddy made the trip from his home in Clonmel. His sisters Teresa English and Bridgid Quinlan arrived from their homes in Caherconlish in Limerick.

His wife Angela, a native of Cork city, and children, Garry McGrath (Beaufort), Rory (Cork), Gillian Breen (Kilgobnait) and Michelle Stokes (Gorey, County Wexford) joined in the celebration as did many of his friends and colleagues from An Garda Siochana, Kerry Mountain Rescue and Beaufort Active retirement.

“It was a great night surrounded by family and close family friends,” said his son Garry, who is the trainer of the St Brendan’s College football team. The school plays its Corn Uí Mhuirí Under 19 semi-final in Mallow on Saturday.

“He is so active, he will be in Mallow on Saturday cheering on the school team.”

Best advice for planting spuds Following on from where I left off last week, we’re looking at the many ways to plant spuds!

There are three types of spuds; Early, Second Earlies and Maincrop, referring to harvest times.

Earlies take about 90 days from planting to harvest. Plant mid-March and harvest late June/July. Second earlies are planted early April, harvested July, taking approximately 110 days to mature. Maincrop potatoes are planted in April, harvested in October, taking about 135 days to grow, and late maincrop can be in the ground for 160 days, planted in April harvested from October onwards.

The advantage of planting early varieties is that you can avoid the blight season, which is usually in July, when the temperature is warm, and the humidity levels are high. Some varieties to try are Home Guard, Red Duke of York, a red skinned spud excellent for roasting. Pink Fir Apple is a pink skinned potato which produces a long, narrow, knobbly tuber. It has a very distinct nutty flavour and is absolutely delicious! Charlotte and Colleen are both scab resistant and blight resistant. Sharpe’s express is a reliable favourite and a floury spud.

Most garden centres have a large range available, and there is even more choice on the internet. I find Fruithill Farm to be

a great source of organic seeds in general and seed potatoes in particular.

Plant your potatoes, after chitting, when ideally the shoots are strong and stubby and about 2cm long and 10-15 in ridges.

Space them as follows: Earlies: 25cm between plants, 50cm between rows.

Maincrop: 35cm between plants, 75cm between rows. As they grow, earth them up, that is, add soil to the top of the ridge when either there is frost forecast, or the shoots are 20cm tall. This is done to prevent tubers going green (a green potato is a poisonous one), to increase yield, to prevent blight washing down to the tubers and to prevent weeds growing.

Harvesting is traditionally done when the plant flowers, however, some of the early varieties may not flower at all, so keeping a diary is a good idea. Apart from blight, potatoes may suffer from scab. One way to avoid it is through crop rotation. It seems to be more prolific during hot, dry spells, so ensuring adequate moisture can be a way to minimise it.

Dedicated hotel staff awarded for excellence

O’Donoghue Ring Hotels rolled out the red carpet last week for their Group Employee Awards evening at the Killarney Plaza Hotel.

Staff were treated to Gala dinner and were entertained by Brendan Fuller MC on the night with dancing until the early hours.

The awards were created bespoke by local craftsman James Purcell.

As acknowledged by Directors Michael O’Donoghue and Gemma Ring on the night, it was not an easy task deciding on the award winners such is the level of talent within the group, but all of the award winners were extremely deserving.

Trevor McCarthy of Shannon College of Management assisted the awards committee with selection and was delighted with the commitment and dedication of staff shown throughout the group of four hotels.

Milan Chamula of the River Island kitchen team took home the ‘Unsung Hero Award’.

The ‘Rising Star Award’ went to Agnieszka Szwab of the Towers Accommoda-

tion Department.

Fausat Lawal of The Killarney Plaza kitchen team was awarded the ‘Employee of the Year’.

Margaret Murphy, the Accommodation Manager in the Killarney Avenue Hotel, won the ‘Manager of the Year’ award.

The ‘Support Person of the Year’ award was given to Edel Lynch of the HR department.

‘Best Newcomer of the Group’ was awarded to Rory O’Sullivan from Group Stores.

There were two winners of the ‘Community Champion Award’, Tracy Dillion and Conor O’Leary.

The River Island hotel team were deserving winners of the ‘Best Guest Experience’ award.

The ‘Best Sales Team’ went to the Reservations Department and the ‘Hotel Team of the Year’ went to The Killarney Avenue Hotel.

€30k prize bonanza for Killarney Credit Union members Susan O’Sullivan from Woodlawn Killarney got a great surprise this week when she received a call to find out she had won a brand new Mitsubishi Space Star in the Killarney Credit Union Members’ Draw.

Susan picked up the keys of her new car from Karena McCarthy, Marketing Officer at a prize giving ceremony on Friday, January 24 at the credit union headquarters.

“We currently have just over 2,200 members in the draw which is held twice a year,” Karena McCarthy, Killarney Credit Union Marketing Officer, said.

“Our prizes include a new car and cash ranging from €250 to €5,000. Our next draw will take place in July 2020.”

Members can apply for the Members’ Draw at any of the branches or download an application form online www.killarneycu.ie. €12 will be taken from the mem-

bers’ account twice a year as an entry fee for the draw.

The 14 cash prize winners were; Donie O’Doherty, Lillian McCrae, Geraldine Gleeson, James Daly, Kathleen Coen, Barry Kelleher, Carmel Cahill, Thomas Lynch, Denis Doona, Eileen O’Callaghan, Donal O’Riordan, Paul O’Rourke, Noreen Murphy, and Ann Murphy.

The draw was adjudicated by solicitor Eoin Brosnan and KCU Risk and Compliance Manager Shane Foley in the credit union offices on Monday, January 15.

“The draw is limited to members of Killarney Credit Union and anyone over the age of 18 can apply to join, so for €2 a month, you can be entered into the draw.

We would encourage members to sign up if they haven’t already, as the saying goes, if you’re not in, you can’t win,” Karena added.

Stop thinking and start doing Take action! That is this week’s simple call to action.

Who remembers studying for college exams? I certainly do and it went a little something like this across a 12 week semester: Weeks 1 to 5: Gather notes, reading materials, print out module timetables, put module timetables in my diary, do up a study schedule, plan when I was going to complete my readings, plan when I have assignments due.

Week 6: Catch up on the reading I did not do that I had planned to do. Spend way more time than I had wanted reading.

Week 7: Realise that I am behind on the assignment due in Week 8 and spend the week getting that done.

Week 8: Catch up on reading from weeks 6 and 7.

Weeks 9-12: Play catch-up on the rest of the semester and fit 12 weeks of study

into two to three weeks.

It’s all too common and it was the story of most of my student life until I made a small change.

So I started taking action.

Much is the same way with your health and fitness. You can read about it, you can research the best “fat blasting” which is utter nonsense, but I digress - you can plan a routine, you can go buy all the gear, you can watch all the videos.

But much in the same way I spent six weeks most semesters planning, NOTHING works until you take action. It doesn’t have to be huge. Just start small and keep compounding those small actions every day, every week. And eventually you’ll be taking action consistently. Going too big too soon can have a compounding negative effect and isn’t sustainable.

So that’s my challenge to you this week; stop talking and thinking, start doing. Get after it, one small step at a time.”

Kerry Pride launches online fundraiser Kerry Pride has launched an online fundraiser in order to raise the money necessary to organise an LGBTQ+ Pride parade in Tralee this June.

Ireland's longest bridge opened on Wexford-Kilkenny border Ireland’s longest bridge officially opened at a ceremony in Co Wexford, on Wednesday.

The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge will span the River Barrow between Wexford and Kilkenny and is part of an extension to the N25 New Ross bypass for € 230m.

Meet the man behind Trump’s social media game President Donald Trump spent a whopping $20m on more than 218,000 different Facebook ads according to an in-depth research by British newspaper ‘The Guardian’.

The paper used an advanced political ad archive application programming interface, or API to analyse thousands of Facebook posts published by his dedicated social media team.

“Over the course of 2019, the Trump campaign spent nearly $20m,” said ‘The Guardian’ report. “Among the ads were some of the images and videos that made front-page news for

their xenophobic, fear-mongering, vitriolic, and outright false rhetoric.”

The paper also revealed that his team also ran a decidedly mundane social media campaign featuring classic marketing ploys designed to harvest user data.

The brains behind Trump’s social media marketing campaign is a man called Brad Parscale.

The 44-year-old Kansas native is an American digital consultant and political aide.

Parscale began working for the Trump Organization in 2011, devel-

oping and designing websites and creating and managing digital media strategies. In early 2015, Trump hired Parscale and his firm, Giles-Parscale, to create a website for his exploratory campaign.

When Trump declared himself a Republican candidate in 2015, one of the first people he called was Parscale, asking him to update his exploratory campaign site into a full-fledged presidential campaign website.

In June 2016, Parscale was officially named digital media director for the Donald J. Trump for President campaign, overseeing all aspects of digital media and online fundraising, as well as traditional media strategy, like radio and television placements.

Today is Brexit Day The reality of Brexit from 11pm tonight (Friday) was discussed by several experts at the third Annual Killarney Economic Conference at The Brehon last Friday.

Prof Katy Howard, who is a Senior Fellow in the UK in a Changing Europe Think-Tank, said: “The Northern Ireland Brexit Protocol does not avoid a hard

border on the island of Ireland. MLAs in the Northern Ireland Assembly will decide if the country will follow the Protocol in four years’ time. There is an assumption that most of the MLAs are pro-Remain, but I would query that and would predict that they would align with the UK if their economy comes under pressure.”

Man uses warm coffee to rescue frozen kittens A video has recently surfaced on the internet, showing a man using a cup of coffee to free three kittens whose tails were frozen to the ground for hours after being abandoned in the cold. The incident took place near Tomahawk, in Alberta, Canada.

Facebook user Kendall Diwisch shared the heartwarming story along with a video of himself captioned, "So today I found these three fellows on one of the back roads near one of my wells. Most likely dropped off. Poor things were frozen into the ice so they had to have been there all night. Took them home, fed and watered them they look to be healthy and friendly. If any friends are looking to

have a new addition in their family, let us know as they will need homes. All three look to be males, and we also gave them dewormer."

In the video the kittens are clearly seen helpless, meowing and unable to move until Diwisch approached them. He poured the warm coffee around the kittens to melt the ice to free them.

Diwisch later updated the post to say that all three kittens had been adopted.

"All three little rascals went to their new home today where they get to be together instead of separating them," he wrote.

"All three are eating and drinking and very energetic. Thanks for everyone's consideration and offering to take them very appreciated," he added.

Dublin school traffic ban leads to 20% fall in pollution A primary school near Malahide in County Dublin that has banned parents from dropping their children at the gate has had pollution fall by 20% since the policy was introduced.

Surveys at St Oliver Plunkett National School have indicated a 50% increase in pupils using “active travel” such as walking, cycling or scooting — since the pilot scheme began last November. As part of

the scheme, the Council offered parents free parking passes for car parks located a 10-15 minute-walk from the school.

The Fingal Council initiative is being watched by other local authorities including Dublin City Council.

The traffic ban is in place between 8.30am and 9.15am and between 1pm and 2.45pm, with retractable bollards closing off the road.

Local residents and disabled drivers are allowed through.

Mystery Bermuda Triangle ship found The SS Cotopaxi ship which was thought to have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle in 1925, has been discovered off the coast of St Augustine, Florida.

The ship, lost to sea 95 years ago, hasn’t been identified; however, diver, author

and researcher Michael Barnette said the evidence during the dives at the site of the Bear Wreck led to one conclusion: it was the SS Cotopaxi.

“It was incredibly exciting,” Michael Barnette said. “I’ve done a countless number of shipwreck dives but this one truly stood out.”

GAA bans WhatsApp amid fears of data protection The GAA has advised clubs to stop using the WhatsApp messaging service because of concerns about the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).

The GAA has been increasingly concerned about GDPR compliance issues affecting participants included in the App's group chats.

WhatsApp is used all over Ireland by sports clubs as well as other associations, whether it be for work or just for fun, as a simple and efficient tool to relay information about games, training, and events to members, players and parents.

The Laois County Board have now urged their clubs not to use WhatsApp, and Croke Park confirmed to RTÉ Sport that they plan to release their own communications App - The Games Management System - which is currently in development.

A document sent to all clubs in Laois reads: "This is an issue for a number of reasons outside of GDPR and data protection also. For instance, if a parent in a WhatsApp group were to post unsuitable material to the WhatsApp group, and then leave the group, the administrators of the group cannot remove such material.”

On Monday night, Laois GAA Children's Officer Seamus Lahart declared at a County Board meeting: "I can't stress it enough, you have to scrap WhatsApp.”

Every January we look at top trends for the coming year; in searching for this year’s trends one thing has stood out is that anything goes!

There are certain trends and styles that come and go but we are looking at more ecological ways of decorating and there are a few sayings that have stuck with me through the years. The first one is by the style icon Coco Chanel; “Fashion fades, only style remains the same”, and the second by William Morris is; “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”. So, rock your personal style in your interiors this year.

Pick and choose from the trends, the ones you love and that will sit comfortably in your home, you’re the one living there!

OUT: PALE MOMOCHROMATICS So much of the late 2010s was saturated in varying hues of taupe, grey or white with all the furniture, walls, floors and fabrics in the same palette. However, lately we are seeing a demand for warmer toned palettes such as muddy pinks, greens and browns

with rich accent colours.

IN: LAYERING OLD AND NEW We are all over the ‘one-stop-shop’ design and are taking the design of our homes to the next level by getting comfortable with mixing and matching old and new. My favourite thing is to buy locally made souvenirs like pottery or art while on holidays as it makes your home a treasure trove of personal memories.

OUT: PERFECTION People are opting toward living with pieces that are worn, have patina, and don’t mind small scratches on an antique writing desk or linen cupboard. It makes you feel more at ease in your home if nothing is too precious.

OUT: TRADITIONAL DINING TABLE AND CHAIRS These have been replaced by comfortable upholstered chairs that are more conducive to hanging out.

OUT: OPEN SHELVING Open shelving is out because practical is in. People don’t want to spend all their time dusting or accessorizing and want to keep their kitchens tidy; glass cabinets are a good alternative.

IN: 50 SHADES OF GREEN We are seeing green everywhere! Our need to be closer to nature has inspired this trend. Go green for 2020.

OUT: ACCENT WALLS Go big or go home! If you love a colour or pattern enough to cover a whole wall in it, be bold and just do the whole room.

OUT: FAUX PLANTS You can always spot a faux plant in a home. It may look great initially, but satisfaction from owning a plant comes from how it organically grows, and the joy of discovering a new leaf! Faux plants will always remain the same and eventually get dusty.

IN: FURNITURE WITH EUROPEAN-INSPIRED DETAILS Furniture with European-inspired detailing is trending. German and Italian influences can be found in the sloping arms of couches and curved organic styles.

IN: QUALITY BEDDING “To Sleep, Perchance to Dream!” You spend half your life in bed - so why wouldn’t you splurge on your bed, mattress, and a nice set of sheets this year.

OUT: SUBWAY TILE Subway tiles were the go-to for everyone for the last few years. While always a classic, they have been

The SEAI Grants typically cover onethird of the total cost of the works for an average home.

Each year members of the club restore a classic car and tractor and raffle the finished project to raise funds for local charities.

Last year the club restored a Ford 2600 tractor that was once owned by the Great Southern Hotel in the town. Funds were divided between ACT for Meningitis (Kerry branch) and The Killarney Micro Track project.

This year the club has got its hands on a 1984 Toyota Starlet P60 and needs help sourcing parts so the car can be restored to its former glory.

Other vehicles restored over the years includes a Land Rover Defender and a Massey Ferguson 135 tractor.

The club meets every Thursday between 7.30pm and 9.30pm at the Men’s Shed

“It is an original Killarney car, it was sold first day by Bowler’s Toyota,” said Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club PRO Tom Leslie. “We are looking for bumpers and other parts but we are also looking for Toyota enthusiasts who can come down and offer advice and support.”

It will take one year to complete the restoration and once its complete club members will start selling raffle tickets for a yet to be announced local charity.

Meanwhile, the club’s annual Barraduff Tractor Run has been postponed by one week. It was originally due to take place this Sunday but will now run on February 9. This event is being run to raise funds for Recovery Haven Kerry and the Kerry – Cork Health Link Bus.

Clifford scores a Mazda It has been a busy few weeks for Kerry football team captain.

In the same week that he celebrated his 21st birthday, he was named as the skipper for the county just before the inter county season got underway.

You could hardly handpick a tougher set of away National League fixtures for Kerry. Peter Keane’s side have already “dropped” one point on the road (not that you could be overly dissatisfied with a draw against the five-time All-Ireland champions), and Tyrone and Mayo in particular are sure to provide stern road tests as well.

The Kingdom will surely need to win all three of their home games to have a realistic chance of claiming some

springtime silverware, starting in Tralee on Saturday evening against Galway.

Kerry will be bolstered by the return of midfielders Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor, fresh off the back of their historic All-Ireland Junior final win with Na Gaeil. With primary midfielder David Moran not currently being considered for selection and Adrian Spillane a doubt having picked up an injury against Dublin, one or both of the Tralee men could well feature this weekend.

Energetic half back Brian Ó Beaglaoich is another injury concern. Graham O’Sullivan, who replaced Begley when he was forced off during last weekend’s bruising encounter with Dublin, is one possible alternative, although

GALWAY TEAM

Current Division 1 joint leaders Galway named their team on Wednesday. Pádraig Joyce’s side shows three changes from the one that enjoyed a fine victory over Monaghan on the opening day with Ronan Steede, Eamon Brannigan and Damien Comer all starting.

Brannigan and Comer both came off the bench last weekend while Steede, who was named Man of the Match in Corofin’s All-Ireland Club final triumph over Kilcoo, comes in for Tom Flynn.

Aside from last year’s league meeting when a late Tomás Ó Sé point helped Kerry to a hard-fought victory in Tuam, Galway have a decent record against Kerry in recent times. The Tribesmen were victorious when the sides last met in Tralee back in 2018 and later that year they effectively ended Kerry’s All-Ireland aspirations by defeating Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s charges in the first round of the Super 8s.

| By Eamonn Fitzgerald It took a mighty effort by David Clifford in the 10th minute of time added on to salvage a draw with the Dubs. In his first day as the new Kerry senior captain, Clifford had a very testing 43-metre free after Micheál Burns was fouled, but he held his nerve and slotted the equaliser.

It was no more than Kerry deserved and it was a little disappointing that they could not kick on for victory at the final hurdle when they led by three points.

The dismissal to the sin bin of Graham O’Sullivan and the incisive play of Ciarán Kilkenny led to that tense finish when Dublin went ahead before Clifford equalised.

I felt that O’Sullivan was unlucky to be carded for what appeared to be a legitimate tackle.

STRONG

Kerry picked a strong team featuring 11 of the side that started in the 2019 replay. Dublin started nine.

Kerry were weak at midfield, though, with Adrian Spillane and Seán O’Shea getting the nod at 8 and 9. O’Shea is not a midfielder, but a brilliant centre forward. A clash of heads from the throwin was no help as he went for temporary repairs for a head wound. He returned to the fray and was his usual reliable self as a free-taker.

To compound the midfield dilemma, Spillane went off injured with a suspected ankle injury after 16 minutes. With David Moran out injured and Na Gaeil midfielders Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor unavailable, Liam Kearney came on.

Still Dublin dominated with Brian Fenton excelling. Kerry would have been in real trouble only for a typical piece of David Clifford magic in the 18th minute when he lit up the lives of the 42,502 in attendance with a spectacular solo goal.

He won a ball in front of Hill 16, waltzed his way past David Byrne and still he had Eoin Murchan and other defenders blocking his path. A point would have been a good score but he went for the jugular, using both of his gifted legs to glide in and shoot low past Evan Comerford. It was the stand-out magical moment in this keenly contested game.

The GAA’s greatest rivals light the fuse

Kerry and Dublin set the tone for 2020 with exhilarating season opener Less than five seconds into the very first game of the 2020 National League, two players had their heads burst open.

Now, I’m not saying that spilling blood for the cause is necessarily a good thing. Nor are head collisions something that you ever want to see.

But Saturday’s full-blooded encounter between Kerry and Dublin had all the cut and thrust of last year’s All-Ireland finals and the early accidental clash between Seán O’Shea and Niall Scully was certainly a sign of things to come.

All told there were four blood substitutions as O’Shea, Scully (twice) and James McCarthy all required attention. Incidentally, all three of Dublin’s temporary changes involved Seán Bugler, who also came on as a regular sub in the 52nd minute and was withdrawn again in the 78th minute, surely making him the first intercounty player ever to be brought on and taken off four times in one game.

There were also two black cards leading to reds (Eric Lowndes and O’Shea), 40 scores and 14 minutes of stoppage time.

And, naturally, the breathless encounter ended with an almighty shemozzle which left David Clifford’s brand new jersey in tatters. The first game of the season really did have a bit of everything and if it’s a sign of things to come, then happy days.

There were plenty of positives from Kerry’s perspective, perhaps most notably the performance of Legion forward James O’Donoghue. The 2014 Player of the Year, who is probably sick and tired of being referred to as the 2014 Player of the Year by this point, was excellent in the first half, kicking three points from play.

O’Donoghue was one of Legion’s best performers in 2019 and if Saturday evening is anything to go by, he appears to have carried some of that brilliant club form into 2020.

I also noticed that he was wearing retro Mikasa gloves in the warm-up, which for this journalist adds at least one point to his overall match rating.

David Clifford was his usual self in his first game as Kerry captain and he kicked the team’s two most important scores on the day: the expertly taken goal in the first half and the equalising free deep into stoppage time. It was interesting to note that Clifford wore No. 14 as opposed to the No. 13 shirt he sported last year.

curse sidestepped.

It was also encouraging to see experienced half back Paul Murphy chipping in with two points from play.

The Rathmore man is one of Kerry’s most influential players on his day and Peter Keane will be hoping for more of the same in the weeks and months to come.

KEARNEY

Spa’s Liam Kearney was called upon after just 16 minutes to replace the injured Adrian Spillane and although he started a little slowly, he found his feet in the second half and went through a nice bit of ball. It’s worth taking into account that his direct opponent, Brian Fenton, is arguably one of the best midfielders of all time.

With David Moran not expected to feature in the league, midfield is the one department where Kerry are likely to experiment and Kearney certainly showed enough in his first game to suggest that he isn’t out of place at this level.

Fellow substitute Micheál Burns was introduced in the 58th minute and he can also be pleased with his contribution. The Dr Crokes man posed the Dubs problems with his tenacious running and he was directly responsible for winning two crucial frees, including the one that led to Clifford’s last gasp leveller.

The one slightly sour note that will irk Peter Keane and his team is that yet again Kerry led the Dubs in the closing stages of a match, and yet again they let it slip.

Of course, it’s still early days and there’s plenty of time to make amends (perhaps at the same venue at the end of March).

The fuse has been lit. Kerry will be hoping to end up on the right side of the explosion.

Dubs and Mayo set for Castlebar clash | By Adam Moynihan There’s never a dull moment when Dublin take on Mayo and football fans are sure to be treated to another intriguing encounter when the sides meet under lights in McHale Park on Saturday.

The Dubs will be disappointed that they were unable to see off Kerry in Round 1 having twice taken the lead in additional time. Anything other than a victory this time out will represent a poor start by their incredibly high standards, although going by their recent record against Mayo, anything other than a

victory would constitute a major shock.

Dublin took on Mayo 15 times in the recently-expired Jim Gavin era, winning 12 and drawing three of those fixtures.

The reigning league champions will need to be at the top of their game to topple the Dubs on Saturday, but they will take heart from last Saturday when an injury-time goal by James Durcan rescued a point against Donegal.

MONAGHAN V TYRONE The Red Hands may be shorthanded this year but you wouldn’t have noticed on Sunday when they launched their 2020 campaign with a comfortable vic-

tory over Meath.

With Mattie Donnelly unavailable and Cathal McShane apparently set for a move to Australia, Tyrone’s forward division looks light on paper but they made light work of The Royals in Omagh regardless. Darren McCurry top-scored for the hosts with 1-6 as they ran out 1-14 to 1-9 winners and Mickey Harte will be looking to him again on Sunday when they make the relatively short trip to Clones.

Monaghan, who suffered a narrow onepoint loss to Galway in their first competitive game of the year, will be keen to avoid a second defeat to their Ulster

rivals in just three weeks; Tyrone beat the Farney Men in the McKenna Cup final on January 18.

MEATH V DONEGAL Meath bridged a 14-year gap when they took on Tyrone last weekend but it was an unhappy return to top-flight football for Andy McEntee’s men as they fell to a disappointing five-point defeat.

They face Ulster opposition again in Round 2 and home advantage might not be enough to help them over the line against a Donegal side considered by many to be the third best team in the country.

LIMERICK Killarney Athletic were unceremoniously dumped out of the Munster Junior Cup on Saturday when they fell to an emphatic 5-2 defeat to Limerick side Aisling Annacotty.

The Blues were in confident form following their victory over Tralee Dynamos in the Kerry area final but they met their match in Aisling, who capitalised on some first-half mistakes to race into a 3-0 lead.

Athletic battled hard to pull one back but they struggled to find openings against the very strong and very organised home team.

In the end, a pair of second-half goals – one via an Aisling defender and the other

by Tom Templeman – counted for little as the Limerick side ran out comfortable 5-2 winners.

Athletic’s attention now reverts to the Kerry competitions and they will be hoping for a return to winning ways when they travel to Fenit in the league on Sunday.

DERBY

Defending champions Killarney Celtic maintained their unbeaten league record with a 2-0 derby victory over MEK Galaxy

on Sunday.

The underdogs kept Celtic at bay for the better part of an hour until pacey attacker Danny Roche broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Veteran defender Stephen O’Mahony made it 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining and Brian Spillane’s side held on for three valuable points. The result sees the Celts move up to second, four points behind leaders Castleisland with two games in hand.

Next up for Celtic is an FAI Junior Cup tie against Donegal outfit Buncrana Hearts.

That match takes place in Donegal this Sunday at 1pm.

Galaxy, meanwhile, are back in league action this weekend as they head back to north Kerry to face off with Listowel.

PREMIER B

Elsewhere last weekend, Dan O’Sullivan, Ian O’Leary and Aonghus O’Leary all found the target for QPR as they played out an exciting 3-3 draw with Premier B leaders Camp United. The result was not enough to lift Quarry Park off of the foot of the table, however, and they will need an improved second half of the season to avoid relegation to the third tier of Kerry soccer.

Scotts Lakers v Portlaoise Panthers Sunday at 3pm Killarney Sports Centre A minute’s silence will be observed at Sunday’s National League match between the Scotts Lakers and the Portlaoise Panthers in memory of legendary Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who died in tragic circumstances last weekend.

Bryant, 41, and eight other people, including his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, were killed in a helicopter crash in California on Sunday. The 18-time All-Star and five-time NBA champion was considered by many to be one of the greatest basketballers of all time.

Since his death, tributes have poured in for the Philadelphia native with players and supporters worldwide honouring his legacy in a wide variety of ways. In the NBA on Sunday, teams began their games by intentionally taking 24-second shot clock violations (Bryant wore No.

24 in the second part of his career having first worn No. 8) and players from a number of rival teams changed their own numbers from 8 and 24, unofficially retiring the Lakers legend’s number in the process.

The Dallas Mavericks, a club Bryant never played for, announced on Monday that none of their players would ever wear No. 24 again.

In another touching gesture, many supporters around the world have left basketballs outside their front doors in Kobe’s memory.

Basketball Ireland confirmed on Tuesday that a minute’s silence would be observed at all club and schools games up until Sunday evening “in honour of Kobe Bryant, his daughter and all of the people involved in the recent tragedy. Kobe Bryant has been an inspiration to a generation of Irish basketballers.”

Scotts Lakers’ American guard Aaron Jackson posted a picture on Twitter of his Nike Kobe basketball shoes with ‘RIP Bean’ (Bryant’s nickname) written in marker on the heel.

“Can’t believe I had to put ‘RIP Kobe’ on my Kobes,” Jackson said. “Someone wake me up.”

Jackson’s compatriot and Lakers teammate Xavier Talton also paid tribute to Bryant on Instagram.

“This one hurts. You played a huge impact on me coming up in the game. Embodied everything it meant to have work ethic, character, passion, drive… Rest easy with your daughter. My thoughts

and prayers are with your family and the families of the other individuals who passed.”

The rally’s first stage is scheduled for 9.10am near Tynagh.

Over 800 people passed through the door and both clubs deemed the exercise a success after spending the day showcasing their events and attracting new members.

It’s a big weekend for Killarney’s Lakers who are facing into a tricky double-header against Tolka Rovers and the Portlaoise Panthers. With their closeset rivals, Fr Mathews, only playing once this week, Shane McCarthy’s side will move into second if they can defeat both Tolka away on Saturday and the Panthers at home the day after.

N agle’s World Rally return

Craig Breen and Paul Nagle will contest Rally Sweden in two weeks’ time as part of the Hyundai Motorsports World Rally Team.

The surprise call-up came on Monday of this week and they will replace Sebastien Loeb and his co-driver Daniel Elena who were originally due to contest the rally for the team.

“Everything happened at 100 miles per hour,” Nagle said.

O ’Sullivan to contest the British Rally Championship

Muckross-based co-driver Noel O’Sullivan will contest the British Rally Championship alongside Welsh driver Osian Pryce in a Hyundai i30 R5.

The championship gets underway next Saturday with the Cambrian Rally in North Wales.

Pryce has twice finished runner-up in the series in 2013 and 2014 and the Kerry/Welsh pairing will be considered one of the favourites for the title. O’Sullivan will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Killarney man Mikie Galvin who won the title in 2017. |

Shane Buckley is the top local seed for Sunday’s Galway International Rally, the opening round of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship.

Tralee-based Killarney teacher Elaine Ní Shé will contest the historic section of the rally alongside Welsh driver Berian Richards in a Ford Escort Mk2.

Kevin O’Donoghue was the best of the Kerry contingent on last Saturday’s Donegal Rally near Termon. Driving a Ford Escort Mk2, the Killarney driver finished a creditable 12th overall despite only deciding to enter the rally a few days beforehand.

Killarney Valley Athletic Club CONGRATULATIONS and well done to Ciara Kennelly who won gold in the High Jump in the U20 All-Ireland Indoor Championships in Athlone at the weekend. Great to see Ciara back!

TRAINING Strength & Conditioning takes place Monday nights 7-8pm, for all members aged 12 upwards. Jerry’s running group also meet at 7pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, while juvenile training is on Thursdays 6-7pm in St Brendan’s Hall. Bring €2 and water.

REGISTRATION for 2020 took place last Thursday evening at training. If anyone still needs to register, they can do so at next Monday or Thursday’s training.

INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Well done to Darragh Horgan and Caoimhe O’Sullivan who competed in the Irish Indoor Rowing Championships held at the UL Arena on Saturday last.

Darragh placed an impressive 5th of 74 in the Mens J15 5 minute trial and 3rd of 57 in the Mens J15 1km race. Caoimhe also scored in the top 15 of 49 in the Womens J18 2km race.

KERRY COUNTY BOARD INTER-CLUB MATCHPLAY: The Inter-Club Matchplay will be returning for the first time since 2003 with Deerpark hosting the first round on Sunday February 16th.

We won’t be playing our first match until the following week, February 23rd though as the format does not give host clubs home advantage each week, they host it. More information to follow.

MUCKROSS HOR: The rescheduled Muckross Head of the River is set for this Saturday, February 1 at the National Rowing Centre. Over 370 crews from 23 rowing clubs are entered for the event which was cancelled in December due to bad weather. Unfortunately, the indications earlier this week were for another unsettled weekend. In the event of a break in the poor conditions, we wish all involved the very best of luck. Muckross RC is set to have the largest representation with over 40 crews set to compete.

In the event of cancellation, it is likely to be training on land at the regular times.

It will also mean a return to our annual date in December before the event runs again. Updates will be posted by text and social media.

Killarney Swimming Club

Killarney Rugby MINIS: Last Saturday our Minis hosted their counterparts from Sunday’s Well in Cork for matches at all ages. A wonderful morning of top notch rugby was enjoyed by all and Aghadoe was a hive of activity. Thanks to all at Sunday’s Well for traveling and thanks to our fantastic coaches and players. A huge thanks to Mags Murphy and her crew Anne, Breda, Sinead, Cornelia, Caroline for the fantastic hospitality shown to our players, coaches and visitors. Training continues tomorrow at 10.30am. U14 GIRLS: On a very busy day at Aghadoe, our U14’s girls hosted Tralee/ Listowel in a friendly with some excellent rugby on display. The girls were excellent and the hard work at training is really showing. The girls host Bruff at Aghadoe at 12 this Sunday in the league.

LIMERICK: Well done to all our senior swimmers who took part in the Gerry Ryan Invitational Gala in Limerick at the weekend. Some fantastic PBs were achieved with five of our swimmers getting divisional times! Congratulations to Paul O’Leary who got a Division One time and to Saibh O’Brien, Peter O'Doherty, Ian Coffey and Charles O’Brien, all of whom got their Division Two times. Thanks to our Team Managers, Denise and Samantha, for keeping the show on the road, to all parents who travelled and to our Head Coach, Cathal O’Brien, who gave such huge support and encouragement to all our swimmers over the weekend. Also, a big “thank you” from Killarney Swimming Club to The Kerry Sports Partnership who recently gave us a grant of €200 under the Coach Education Fund for Women. This sort of support is invaluable for the long-term planning of our club as it helps us train, support and encourage coaches for the future.

Killarney Judo UPDATE: On the 26th of January, eight players from Killarney Judo Club travelled to Macroom for the Munster Mini Mon. For several players, it was their first time competing against other clubs such as Cork City, Kerry School of Judo and Waterford. All the players performed extremely well and gained much needed experience for tougher competitions ahead. Kate Forde, Rian Horgan, and Connor O'Sullivan won Gold. Well done especially to Rian as this was his first competition. Muireann O'Brien won Silver and was unlucky against a more experienced player. Max

Killarney Badminton Club COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Divisions 1, 3 and 5 Kerry Singles Championships were held in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Complex on the 24th January. Well done to Saoirse Murphy who was runner up in the Div 5 ladies singles.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS: Grade C Munster championships were held in UL. Well done to Niamh Hickey (Killarney) and partner Tom Bourke (Castleisland) who were runners-up. Grade D Munster Championship was held in the Aura on the 19th January. Congratulations to Maeve Twomey (Killarney) and her partner Elaine Hudson (Moyvane) who were winners of the ladies doubles. Maeve and her partner Fergal Hannon (Listowel) also went on to win the mixed doubles.

UPCOMING COMPETITIONS: The Division 2 and 4 Kerry County Singles Championships will be held in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Complex on Friday the 31st January at 7pm.
