Barraduff Garda Station reopens after 10 year closure For the first time in over 10 years a local garda station reopened this week - and plans are now in place for it to be manned permanently. | By Sean Moriarty A dedicated Garda officer is to be stationed at Barraduff Garda Station after it officially reopened on Tuesday. Garda Declan Leader has been appointed as the Officer in Charge (OIC), and the station will also have a dedicated patrol attached to it. An Garda Síochána made the decision to re-open the station full-time as a result of the growing population in the village. The station was left unmanned following Government cutbacks as a result of the recession in 2008 and 2009. Barraduff is situated on the N71 main Killarney to Mallow road and is a busy commuter and tourist route. “This is a very positive development,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killar-

Killarney’s Christmas lights will have several new features this year - but the exact style is remaining a closely guarded secret until the official switching on ceremony tomorrow night (Saturday). Electrician Diarmuid Cronin has been a familiar sight on the town's streets over the last few weeks as he and his team put the finishing touches to this year’s display. The official ‘Switching on Ceremony’ will take place with Mayor Marie Moloney tasked with the all important job. The first of several planned ‘Christmas in Killarney’ parades will also take place on Saturday night. “It is a great honour for me to be bringing such joy and festivities to Killarney,” Diarmuid told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are a few new elements but you will have to wait until Saturday to see them. I hope the people of Killarney will enjoy them – especially the kids – and that we bring some light and colour after a difficult year. I would also like to thank motorists for their patience in recent weeks as we blocked streets to get the decorations and lights up in time. I would also like thank Eileen O’Donoghue and Noel O’Leary of the Municipal District Council who have been a great support in this.”

ney Advertiser. “We are delighted to be in a position to do this.” The news has been welcomed by community groups in the area. “News like this is always a welcome development,” Tadgh O’Shea of the Barraduff Community Field Organisation told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are more and more new people moving into the

area.” The Barraduff Tidy Village group said they too “were delighted with the news”. “This is very important to us,” said secretary Marie O’Sullivan. “Not alone for the times we live in, but also important if we have forms to sign [like passport applications], it is way more convenient to go to Barraduff than have to drive all the way into Killarney.”

Gardai to clampdown on illegal driving Killarney Garda will have an increased presence on the roads around Killarney this weekend. They are concerned that a number of boy racers may attend the Killarney Historic Rally which is taking place today (Friday) and all day tomorrow (Saturday). Traditionally, this end of season event does not attract the unwanted element of boy racers that usually disrupt the Rally of the Lakes. However, the May Bank Holiday event was cancelled this year and Killarney Gardai are concerned that these non-genuine rally fans may attempt to disrupt this weekend’s rally. “We are putting extra resources on the roads this weekend,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “We want people to enjoy the rally, but we must also ensure that our roads are safe for all road-users.” Superintendent Murphy said that they are expecting a very busy weekend in town. As well as the rally and associated events on Friday and Saturday, The Christmas in Killarney Festival gets underway tomorrow night (Saturday).

SHINE YOUR OWN LIGHT With the spectacular Tree of Light set to illuminate the town from December 1, once again becoming the main focal point of the Christmas in Killarney celebrations, a golden opportunity will arise this year for people to shine their own light on the landmark tree for someone they love

or anybody they wish to send a special greeting to. Over 4,500 bulbs will sparkle on the giant 100ft Californian Redwood on the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral and this year people can shine their own light to make it an even more meaningful Christmas. The public is being invited to contribute

€10 to shine a light and, in return, they will receive a special gift scroll on which to include the name of those they wish to remember or thank at Christmas. A special Mass will be offered early in the New Year for the intentions of all those for whom bulbs were bought. All proceeds of the ‘Shine Your Light’ campaign will help offset some of the enormous costs involved in running the Christmas in Killarney festival each year, and of course, ensuring that the Tree of Light will remain an annual feature for the festive season. Bulbs can be bought and certificates downloaded online at christmasinkillarney.com or, alternatively, they can be purchased at Sheahan’s Centra on Main Street, New Street or Muckross Road, Walsh Bros Shoes on New Street, Eagers Newsagents on High Street, Healy’s Newsagents on New Street, Who’s4Shoes on High Street or Eason on Main Street.

Santa confirms he's on his way to Killarney parade!

CONTRIBUTION: One of Elieen O'Donoghue's contributions to the town of Killarney are the many wall murals. She is pictured here with Cllr Brendan Cronin at the unveiling of the murals in St Anthony's Place during the summer of 2020. Photo: Sean Moriarty

Eileen moves to a new Council role Popular Killarney Municipal District officer Eileen O’Donoghue has left the Town Hall and taken up a new role with the Corporate Affairs Department of Kerry County Council. | By Sean Moriarty Ms O’Donoghue started her new role in Áras an Chontae this week after over four years as the town’s Municipal District Officer. Along with the day to day operation of the Municipal District, in her time in the Town Hall she played a significant role in the delivery of a wide range of projects that enhanced Killarney for both locals and visitors. These included the current Christmas display and the many wall murals across the town centre. Eileen worked to improve and enhance access to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure in and around the town. This is now a key part of the Climate Change agenda. Eileen’s last project was the delivery of the new mural along the Flesk cycleway. Evidence of her work can be seen this week on the streets of Killarney, with the large scale Christmas decorations, which were added to the town in 2020. Eileen used her skills to secure funding

and worked with organisations such as Tidy Towns, Chamber of Commerce, and the National Parks and Wildlife Services, in the delivery of projects for the betterment of the district. Eileen paid tribute to her “fantastic team of both indoor staff and outdoor workers led by Noel O'Leary who, along with elected members, work tirelessly for the good of the Municipal District”. “The last 18 months have been a challenging time for everyone, but services and significant projects continued to be delivered. As a local and keen walker I was particularly delighted to see the road to Torc upgraded and the Flesk cycleway completed this year,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “The staff in Killarney are exemplars in their commitment and dedication to public service delivery and I look forward as a local to the continued development of the town.” Eileen’s successor has been named as Brian Teahan, a native of Killorglin who served in similar roles in Local Authorities in the Dublin area.

Killarney is set for a bumper festive parade - and a very special visit from Santa himself tomorrow night (Saturday). A new route and a new float have been added this year, and there'll be great excitement in town after last year's parade was cancelled due to COVID. The turn-off from the Killarney bypass road to Upper Lewis Road, from both the Cleeny and Park Road sides, will be closed from 5.30pm to 6.15pm this Saturday night to facilitate the first Christmas in Killarney parade of the season. A new route will see participants leaving from Fitzgerald Stadium and proceeding along Lewis Road, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and High Street, with the festivities due to commence at 6pm. Other traffic restrictions will also apply with the streets involved – in addition to Upper New Street – to be closed off from 5pm to 7.30pm. Members of the public intending to gather to watch the parade are being encouraged to wear facemasks at all times and to respect social distancing requirements. The Christmas in Killarney Festival Committee has asked people to plan their

evening in advance, to arrive and park early and to find a safe place from which to view the parade. “In the times we are living in and with ongoing concerns about the potential spread of COVID-19, safety is paramount and we would ask everybody to heed the advice we are offering and to obey stewards on the night,” said Christmas in Killarney voluntary chairman Niall Kelleher. “All the volunteers will be wearing facemasks and we would ask all others to do so as well. It will be a long evening so people are asked to find somewhere comfortable and safe and to ensure any children they have with them are kept safe too,” he added. “We are asking people to arrive in town early, enjoy the atmosphere, check out the shops and maybe even enjoy one of the Santa sleigh rides.” Following the enforced absence last year, this year’s parade promises to be extra magical with an incredible new float lined up while all the other favourite floats have been given a fabulous new look. Santa Claus has confirmed that he will be in attendance at the parade and he is looking forward to meeting all the boys and girls who, he revealed, are all on his ‘Nice’ list this Christmas.

New Road traffic meeting deferred | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardai hope to host a meeting to discuss traffic problems in the New Road area as soon as possible but say the pandemic is causing a delay. There have been on-going problems in the area at school drop-off and pick-up times. As recently as last week the Killarney Advertiser highlighted some of the issues faced by residents of the otherwise quiet street. Previously, cyclists and wheelchair users

have complained that they were unable to use the street due to large numbers of illegally parked cars. Sergeant Dermot O’Connell of Killarney Garda Station has told the Killarney Advertiser that he and his colleagues are working with various stakeholders, including Kerry County Council, school principals and businesses on the street. “We want to call a meeting a discuss these plans and solutions with all stakeholders,” he told the Killarney Advertiser, “We can’t call such a meeting due to COVID-19 but we will as soon as we can.”

Relegation battle has town divided | By Sean Moriarty This is bigger than the county final itself - with the main prize on offer being bragging rights in the town.

GOLDEN COUPLE: Pinewood couple, Jim and Sheila Morris, celebrated 50 years married on Saturday. Photo: Sean Kelly

Pinewood couple celebrate golden moment

It was a golden celebration for Killarney couple Jim and Sheila Morris on Saturday as they reached a very special milestone. | By Michelle Crean Close family and a few friends, including their wedding photographer Sean Kelly marked their 50th wedding anniversary in style at the couple's home in Pinewood Estate. Due to the COVID restrictions, the couple, who married in Muckross Church on November 20 1971 followed by a reception in the Lake Hotel, decided on a small gathering at the weekend with their nearest and dearest at home. Jim is originally from Glencar while Sheila is from Rathmore. Jim moved to Cork in 1965 for work with CIE. He then moved back to Kerry in 1973 and worked on the Expressway bus from Tralee to Cork and estimates that during his 43 years with the company he checked in two and a half million passengers over three and a half million miles! It was during his time with CIE that he met Sheila who was working in the Killarney Railway/Bus Station. They built a house in Pinewood and over the years had five children, Anthony, Mary, Sinead, Sheila and Jim Jr. "We had our family and friends in for a small gathering on Saturday," Jim told the Killarney Advertiser.

After an unprecedented run of events during this year’s Kerry Senior Football championship Killarney's two biggest clubs, Dr Crokes and Killarney Legion are set to face off in a relegation battle that is sure to divide the town. In sporting terms, the outcome of the big game, set for December 5, is simple enough. The winner stays in the Senior Championship next season and the losers will have to play in the Intermediate Championship. Fans of the black and amber or the green and white face an anxious week. Winning the county title is one thing – consigning your cross town rivals to second division football is altogether a bigger prize. Senior officials from both clubs are being very guarded on a potential outcome as both sides know the significance of this play off. “It is a pity that two Killarney clubs, with a long tradition of playing football in the top tier, find themselves in the position of having to play off to avoid relegation,” Matt O’Neill, Cathaoirleach of Dr Crokes, told the Killarney Advertiser. "Both teams will fight tooth and nail to stay in the senior ranks. I am confident that on Sunday week our lads will do themselves and the club proud, as always, and give their all in the quest to

keep the black and amber to the fore.” Crokes are based off the Lewis Road with Legion a short distance away on the other side of the bypass. “Everyone has an opinion on this,” Legion PRO, Elaine O’Donoghue, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Both sides will be nervous – may the best team win. There are a lot of questions, are the Crokes suffering after defeat to Kerins O’Rahillys [in the semi-final]? Are our lads suffering after losing to St Brendan’s for the third year in a row?” Every football fan will be keeping a close eye on next weekend’s Intermediate County Final too which takes place on December 4. The winners of the match between Beaufort and Tralee side Na Gael will be automatically promoted to replace the losers of the Killarney play-off in the Senior Championship next season. Should Beaufort prevail, a (relatively) local team could replace a town team in the top flight.

Traffic restrictions in place for rally weekend | By Sean Moriarty WEDDING DAY: Jim and Sheila Morris pictured on their wedding day in 1971. This photo was also taken by the couple’s good friend and photographer Sean Kelly.

"Seanie [Kelly], our neighbour, was our wedding photographer. He's a top photographer. I know him and Mary 50 years." And Jim revealed the secret to a long and happy marriage. "You have ups and downs but you have to work together through them."

Motorists can expect traffic disruption in the town and surrounding areas today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) as there are a number of road closures in place to facilitate the running of the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally. Lewis Road car park will be used as a holding area for competing rally cars and will be unavailable for parking purposes until 10am tomorrow (Saturday). Main Street from the Plaza Hotel to New

Street will be closed from 6pm to 9pm today (Friday) to allow the holding of a ceremonial start in the area. Tomorrow (Saturday), the Moll’s Gap road will be closed from the main entrance to Muckross House between 7.30am and 2.15pm and Ballaghbeama Gap will close from 8am and 2.29pm. Roads in the Caragh Lake area will be shut between 8.40am and 3.24pm also tomorrow (Saturday) and motorists can also expect heavy traffic on the N72 between Killorglin and Fossa and on Muckross Road from around 7am until after 4pm.

time for Manor West Retail Park, following the arrival of The Range and JYSK who opened their doors in October. This month, giant pet retailer Maxi Zoo also opened its very first Kerry store. Wedding couples can keep smiling in Killarney National Park Deputy Michael Healy Rae has welcomed official news from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage that wedding couples can have their photographs professionally taken in Killarney National Park despite claims to the contrary. In a written reply to a recent Dáil question by the Kilgarvan TD, Deputy Mi chael Healy Rae was assured that there

was “absolutely no substance to the recent claims that married couples are not permitted to take their photos”. “I am pleased to inform the Deputy that there is absolutely no substance to the recent claims that married couples are not permitted to take their photos in Killarney National Park. There has been no change of policy introduced in respect of the treatment of commercial photography in the National Park. Photography by the general public and amateur wildlife pho-

tography is permitted within the Park. All commercial events, including professional photography, wedding, promotional, fashion etc., is subject to a permit system. This has been the case for quite some time," Minister Darragh O’Brien said. “A permit has long been required for both insurance and indemnification purposes. It is incumbent upon the professional photographer to apply for a current permit - which is readily and quickly available. It is a very simple process for the professional photographer to complete and permits apply for the year. The staff of my Department will always accommodate photographers and work with them to ensure safety for all at the National Park.” Deputy Michael Healy Rae has welcomed confirmation of the policy and is delighted that the long standing tradition of couples taking wedding pictures in Killarney National Park will continue onto another generation of people. “This is great news as I have received a lot of calls from worried couples, but my advice to them now is to keep smiling for the camera on their most important of days,” Deputy Michael Healy Rae said.

"Customers will have so much choice with the introduction of Jam Café & Bakery, TOBA, The Crepe House and Ciao Pizzeria, which is fantastic. Killarney businesses to have their say

ORGANISING TEAM: Tim Regan, Andy Regan and Con Lynch with Paddy B Lynch, Paddy O'Keeffe, Jim Gleeson and Mike Casey at the Card Drive launch in March 2020.

Donation to be made in memory of Johnny Batt

Spa GAA remembered one of their most loyal members this week when his beloved club donated to a Kerry charity. | By Sean Moriarty Club stalwart Johnny Batt Cronin, who was steeped in Spa GAA club history, passed away in September 2019 after a battle with cancer. An outstanding footballer, he won seven O'Donoghue Cup medals with Spa as well as a county Intermediate Championship medal in 1974 and a County League Division One title two years later. He was also a member of the star-studded East Kerry divisional side that won the inaugural All-Ireland Club Championship in 1971. When he hung up his boots, Johnny trained and coached many underage teams and was honoured with a hugely deserved lifetime achievement award by his beloved Spa GAA Club in 2015. He was also a champion card player, winning the Spa Championship of Kerry 31 Card Drive on two occasions. After his passing, Spa GAA wanted to run a 31 Card drive in his memory and to raise funds for Oncology Department in University Hospital Kerry. The Card Drive was postponed on several occasions due to the pandemic - and while some of the earlier rounds were completed by early 2020 - it was not possible to complete the competition that has now been cancelled completely due to ongoing crowd gathering concerns. “A number of teams had entered this card drive competition (two people per team) and it started in early 2020 and most but not all of the early rounds did get played,”

club PRO, Deirdre O'Sullivan Darcy, said. “When COVID-19 hit they delayed the next stages of the competition.” Nevertheless, teams had paid entry fees and it was decided to handover the funds raised to the Comfort for Chemo charity at the Oncology Department in University Hospital Kerry. Members of the organising team met this week to reveal the winners of spot prizes had the event gone ahead. The money will be handed over next week to the charity when the final amount is totalled. “They kept delaying and postponing but at this point have decided to cancel it completely and make the donation for the money that was collected at the time,” added Deirdre.

An important survey to ascertain the views of the business community in Killarney on a whole range of important local issues has been launched.

they consider Killarney a good place to do business, the biggest challenges facing the town post-pandemic, and how business practices have changed because of COVID.

Those with commercial interests in the town are being urged to respond to ensure a full and accurate snapshot of local opinion is obtained. The Business Sentiment Survey 2021 – which is not to be confused with the 'Let’s Talk About Town' research conducted last month – is geared towards discovering what is important for local businesses going forward, what they need and expect from the town, and what measures they would like to see implemented. The information provided will be important as Killarney continues moving towards creating a safe, progressive and inclusive town in COVID times. All replies are anonymous and the findings will go to an independent third party agency for professional analysis with the responses to be aggregated together and presented as an overall set of results. Questions posed in the Business Sentiment Survey, commissioned by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, in consultation with Killarney Municipal District Council, include the percentage of local, domestic and international markets business relied on pre and post-COVID-19, how reliant businesses are on local trade now, and the number of people each business employs. Respondents are also asked if and why

The business community is asked to estimate how the pandemic impacted on trade and views are invited on the need for CCTV cameras in the town. The Business Sentiment Survey also seeks opinions on how effective or otherwise outdoor dining, pedestrianisation, the widening of footpaths and new parking regulations were in Killarney during the summer months and to rate, by means of priority, issues such as Tidy Towns standards, street cleaning and bin storage on the streets. Other questions deal with how Killarney’s nightlife scene is viewed in terms of its impact on businesses, how strongly people would recommend Killarney as a town to socialise in to a friend, and how safe they consider the town after dark. “We are eager to get as much representation across each sector as possible,” said Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Niall Kelleher. “We would greatly appreciate it if people could complete and also share and encourage businesses across their respective industry and any professional groups they may be a member of to complete to take the survey,” he added. PANDEMIC IMPACT

Kerry PCR test centre "working at capacity" | By Michelle Crean The HSE has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that it is carrying out in excess of 2,600 PCR tests every day in the Cork and Kerry regions. With the number of cases steadily on the rise in recent weeks, the HSE said that there "is currently a very high level of demand for tests" across Kerry with the Tralee centre "working at capacity". "We are doing everything possible to provide extra appointments," the HSE said. Temporary sites to increase the number of appointments available have been opened although at present the HSE has said that no location "will open up specifically in Killarney" but that the situation is "being kept under constant review".

"Testing capacity and demand in Kerry is kept under constant review. All testing is by appointment only, and people should book on hse.ie or via their GP before travelling to a test centre. If a test appointment slot isn’t available when you look on hse.ie, please check back online later as a slot may have become available. We monitor testing on a continuous basis and retain slots for GP referral or close contacts, which may become available for the public to book later in the day or up to the end of the next day." Their priority is to make sure GPs can refer patients for PCR testing where they feel it is warranted, and that close contacts of confirmed cases get their test appointment as quickly as possible. "Ensuring these two groups are prioritised does mean that those outside these categories may not be able to book a test until the following day."

Staff and students highlight important LGBTI+ message

Staff and students in Killarney Community College came together for 'Stand Up Awareness Week' as part of a national campaign where second-level schools take a stand against homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. All staff wore a rainbow colour and students wore rainbow coloured accessories

to show their support for the campaign as Killarney Community College is a diverse, inclusive, accepting, and welcoming safe space for everyone. The majority of students made a particularly great effort in terms of wearing rainbow coloured accessories were awarded house points.

Local students went to great efforts on Friday last to highlight a very important message about inclusion.

During the week, the LGBTI+ flag was hanging proudly in the school canteen. Transition Years decorated the General Purpose area with informative posters, and in SPHE classes, students learned about LGBTI+ terminology and history. "It's important that school is a safe and inclusive place for anyone attending re-

gardless of their race, sex, religion or sexuality," Principal, Stella Loughnane, said. "I'm delighted that our school community marked the occasion and brought great colour while highlighting a very important message. One of the key words of our mission statement is inclusion making this awareness day a very apt one."

This year’s collection has be renamed as ‘Giving Sunday’ and makes a return after the pandemic forced the cancellation of last year’s fundraiser. “We are moving towards a cashless society,” explained Killarney Conference President Breda O’Dwyer. “You can tap and swipe your card to make a donation.” Breda added that they are hoping to have the buckets ready by next week in time for the collection. She said the local conference of the St Vincent De Paul Society has seen a marked increase in the number of families it is helping mainly caused by the increase in the cost of fuel and home heating products. The annual St Vincent De Paul Society’s Christmas Jumper Day, in association with Radio Kerry is scheduled for December 10.

New life-saving defibrillator at Killarney Innovation Centre A life-saving defibrillator has just been installed in the Killarney Innovation Centre to cater for the clients and visitors but also the wider community. Fitted in a secure cabinet outside the front entrance to the centre it can be accessed 24 hours a day should it be needed. “It was an easy decision to locate the unit externally on the building," Centre Manager, Conor O’Leary, said. "The hope is that it will never be needed, but if it can make a difference in the centre or wider community that is a positive for everybody." Killarney Innovation Centre is home to 16 different companies and caters for more transient clients with hot desking and meeting space. Conor has said with those numbers present in the centre a defibrillator purchase was an easy decision. “AEDs dramatically increase the chance of a person surviving in the event of suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest. Sudden cardiac arrest can strike anyone at any time and is one of Ireland's biggest killers." Some clients in the centre have recently completed a Community Heart Savers

programme and it is planned to hold further courses in the centre in the New Year, he added. In the near future the intention is to link with the Michael Linehan Heartsafe Group, of which Conor is an active trainer, and have the unit listed on the defibrillator map. Conor wants to acknowledge the assistance given by the Department of Rural and Community Development in assisting in the purchase of the unit.

"Our plan to introduce an electric fleet of vehicles confirms our commitment to move forward towards carbon neutrality. This funding from the Department

of Transport demonstrates a strong commitment by Government to help us achieve that goal and continue our recovery. Gina Herlihy began fundraising for Comfort for Chemo Kerry after she lost both parents to cancer. She successfully raised funds with her 'Big Christmas Raffle' before being forced to switch online last year, which was also very successful. Now she's ready to do it all again as this year's online Christmas fundraising raffle will take place on Friday December 10 at 7pm live via Facebook. So far, via her charity page, Gina has raised €1,475 bringing her closer to her €2,500 target. All proceeds raised will go directly to the charity to help build a new chemotherapy unit on the grounds of UHK, she explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "The prizes are fantastic and once again this year local businesses and local people have been extremely generous sending donations and lots of prizes which will be raffled on the night," she said. "Last year there were 40 very happy winners from all over Kerry and beyond, and this year there will be lots lots more. The prizes range from hotel mini breaks, store vouchers, bikes, photoshoot, hair and beauty hampers, meat, food and drinks hampers, family

fun day passes and much much more, and all just in time for Christmas." And she's seeking further prizes if local businesses can help out. "If there are any local businesses who are not already sponsoring the event and who would like to with a prize, or maybe a donation, they can get in touch with me." To enter the raffle simply donate on the iDonate link: 'raffle/ComfortForChemo21' or contact Gina directly on 087 7708532.

local motorcyclists before setting off for a run to Killorglin and Castleisland. “We used to do the full Ring of Kerry but many people found it too long for the time of year, so this year the route is a mis-match of Kerry towns," organiser, Dave Foley, said. “Entry fee is by donation too – we used to set at a tenner but found last year we raised a lot more money by letting people decide themselves. Some give a five and more give €50.” Over one hundred motorcycles are expected to take part in the run. Funds will also be donated to Eagle Lodge Care in Tralee.

Kerry Stars “pursuing dream to build own sports centre” | By Sean Moriarty Kerry Special Olympics Club is still pursuing its dream to build a sports centre in Derreen, a senior club official has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser.

The club has identified a site, with support from Kerry County Council, between the existing Killarney Legion and Killarney Celtic sports grounds. However, the project remains on the long finger as the club has been concentrating on the safety of its members throughout the pandemic. The delay prompted Cllr Donal Grady to ask Kerry County Council if it had any plans to build houses on the site. Mr Grady asked the question in the context of making sure the land did not go to waste and not in opposition to any plans by Kerry Stars.

“The site referred to was originally identified as a potential site for development as a specific sports facility. That project has not materialised,” a Council official said. “Kerry Stars had been in contact with Kerry County Council regarding use of the site, and it was expected that further communication would be received from them in the very short-term. As yet, Kerry County Council is awaiting further communication and will liaise directly with the Kerry Stars group before we can give consideration to use of the lands under the 'Housing for All' housing plan.” However, Kerry Stars chairman John Spillane said they still "have every intention of pursuing our dream of have our own sports centre". "The location makes perfect sense, it is the sports hub of Killarney and all the clubs there could help and learn from each other.”

New Street shop is sure to delight wine fans

If you're a wine fan then there's good news as a new shop which specialises in all kinds of wines has opened on New Street. The Wine Buff, a chain of franchised wine stores, with franchisee KD Evans at the helm, opened its 11th Irish store, on Friday last. The store joins other locations including Cork, Dungarvan, Ennis, Galway, Gorey, Kilkenny, Limerick, Nenagh, Portarlington and Sligo, along with Saint-Émilion in Bordeaux. Each Wine Buff store is one hundred percent Irish owned and managed, offering an exclusive selection of wines imported directly from the world’s finest sustainable family-run vineyards, earning The Wine Buff its reputation for stocking ‘extraordinary wines at ordinary prices'. Their mission is to take the mystery out of wine, allowing everyone to enjoy great wines from producers throughout the wine growing regions of Europe, particularly France, Italy and Spain, and further

afield. KD is proud to be the newest member of the franchise. “I’m absolutely delighted to bring The Wine Buff brand to Killarney. The local support we have received here already has been phenomenal and we’re really looking forward to becoming an integral part of this wonderful community.” Daragh Moore, Co-Founder and Franchise Director of The Wine Buff added that, “it’s great to have KD on board as a franchisee". "One of the key things we look for in our franchisees is a passion for wine and for discovering new wines from different regions of the world and KD has this in spades. Killarney is a fantastic, vibrant town and we couldn’t think of a better location for our newest store.”

Killarney Ploughing to host 2022 county final | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Ploughing Association is celebrating after learning it will host the county final next year. The association held its annual Killarney Ploughing Final last Sunday at Coffey’s Farm Fossa. A strong entry ensured stiff competition in all classes. “The day ran very well, we were delighted to have both young and old come out to see the ploughing on the day,” secretary Veronica Heaslip told the Killarney Advertiser. “The weather was ideal. We had people travel from Cork and Sligo on the day to

compete. It was fantastic to see all the different categories. We had three sets of horses, vintage, reversible, senior and novice on the day.” It was announced on the day that Killarney Ploughing Association will host the Kerry final next year and further details of that event will be released at a later date. “We are already looking forward to next year’s match as Killarney will be hosting the county match,” added Veronica.

RESULTS CLASS WINNERS

Novice: Tom Leslie; Senior: Derek O'Driscoll, Vintage: Angus Horan; Reversible: Mike O’Halloran; Horse: JJ Delaney; 96 Junior Horse: Johnathan Trant.

What do roses, wrens, King Puck, fairies and Santa Claus have in common? Well, all now feature in a new children's book co-written by a mother and son. The new illustrated poetry collection for children, 'A Very Kerry Year', by Killorglin mother and son, Jacinta and Conor Browne, has been published just in time for Christmas. And all proceeds will be donated to Comfort for Chemo, an organisation whose mission it is to build and equip a chemotherapy unit for the people of Kerry. The charity is close to the young author's

heart as Conor himself was undergoing cancer treatment while writing this book. With original poetry by the mother and son, the book also has another separate family connection as the talented illustrators are local artists, father-daughter duo Con and Rochelle Lucey, with each page awash with colour and beautiful drawings. “I know first-hand how important it is to have a comfortable environment while receiving chemotherapy," Conor said. 'A Very Kerry Year' is currently available for €12 from The Crystal Cave and the Reeks District Tourist Office in Killorglin and will soon be available in many more outlets throughout the county.

Ciara from Kilcummin is daughter of Patricia and Malachy Moynihan, and Dubliner Troy, a self-employed carpenter, is son of Micheal and Michelle Francis. The couple, who now live in Killarney, were married in St Mary’s Cathedral at 12 noon on October 14 by Fr Eamonn Mulvihill. Afterwards it was off to Killarney National Park for photos before a fun celebration in the Killarney Oaks Hotel with family and friends. The bridesmaids included Jennifer Casey, Ciara’s cousin and her two good friends, Lisa O’Connor and Ashling McCarthy. Groomsmen were Joseph Foley who is Troy’s cousin, and his two good friends, Eddie Boylan and Oisin Daly. “Troy and I met when we were both on a friend’s holiday in Santa Ponsa in 2011 and he proposed on a small beach with a picnic overlooking San Francisco bridge in April 2019,” Ciara told the Killarney Advertiser. The couple were relieved to finally have their big day as plans for their July 17 wedding last year were cancelled, as was their May 20 date this year due to the pandemic. “We had the most amazing day, we loved every second of it! It was emotional as we

had waited so long. It was better than we ever could have imagined. It was amazing to finally be able to have our day with our family and friends as they were all with us every step of the way with all the cancellations.” She added that the weather was amazing which was also a bonus. “We had so much fun and made memories with our family and friends to last a lifetime. I got ready in my parent’s house in Kilcummin and Laura Lou did my hair and Aifric Rice did my make-up. My dress was got in Vows in Blarney, my beautiful headpiece was handmade by Mary Frances based in Kilcummin. Groomsmen suits were Simply Suits Killarney.” The groom’s suit was handmade by Louis Copeland and Sons in Dublin, she added. Photos were by K Photography and video was by Cosmo Productions, while flowers were from Tie the Knot in Abbeyfeale. “Cakes by Deborah made us the most amazing travel theme cake.” The newlyweds then spent two weeks relaxing in Greece after a hectic run up to the wedding day. Ciara added that they plan to do a big trip next year when COVID calms down again. “We are so excited for what the future has in store for us.”

Campaign calls on Kerry public to be 'Winter Ready' Statutory and public bodies in Kerry are urging members of the public to be prepared for the winter months and to be ‘Winter Ready’. The HSE, Kerry County Council and An Garda Síochána are encouraging households to make preparations for adverse weather, particularly during the current pandemic, and to ensure that neighbours reach out to older or vulnerable households at this time to ensure that they are prepared for any potential winter weather. The Kerry agencies are working closely with their counterparts in Cork as part of the Cork and Kerry Interagency Emergency Management Office coordination of the response to winter emergencies. The local organisations are drawing the attention of the public to the www.winterready.ie website which has useful tips and information for members of the public, including advice on how to avoid trips and falls, and how to make sure your home and family are prepared for winter. Local statutory bodies will be promoting important messages over the

coming weeks around issues like road safety, preparing the home, health and well-being, advice for older people, and details of important emergency contacts. Specially prepared ‘Winter Ready’ fridge magnets have been prepared by the Cork-Kerry Interagency Emergency Management Office and these will be distributed through the Kerry Public Participation Network (PPN) over the coming weeks. The magnets will provide specific contact details for use during an emergency such as numbers for the ESB, Irish Water, local Garda stations and the County Council. All of the local agencies including the Health Service Executive (HSE), An Garda Síochána, Kerry Fire Service, Kerry Civil Defence and Kerry County Council work closely together to ensure a coordinated response to any emergencies which may arise over the winter months.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Angela Kerrisk Angela is available for advice and fitness consultations at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Are you getting enough sleep?

We have all heard the phrase “routine is the killer” however for many of us who, on a daily basis, stretch ourselves thin wearing a variety of different hats, simply creating a specific and sustainable routine will separate the successful and organised from the stressed and overwhelmed. Incorporating a routine helps to bring direction and structure, and as Craig Ballantyne so wonderfully put it in his book 'The Perfect Day'; "Structure = Freedom". In our childhood, we became accustomed to a bedtime routine. In fact, those of us who are parents go to great lengths to create this routine for our own children, knowing the benefits it brings. However, as we moved into adulthood, that same routine was thrown out the window by the demanding world of school and fulltime work. Sleep and health are locked together. When we improve our sleep, we have better energy, mood, and recover easier from exercise. When we sleep better it helps us to make better nutrition choices because sleep regulates our hormones. Yet it’s one of the first things we sacrifice in order to get through our full to-do list. Whatever these or our end goal is, jeopardising our health seems to be counterproductive and also just a little crazy! Why is it that as adults we stray so far away from one of the very foundational rituals that can keep us feeling grounded? So how much sleep do you need? About

six to eight hours is good but the exact number depends on the person. No matter who you are, you’ll feel worn out if you don’t get enough.

HERE ARE SOME SUGGESTIONS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE GREATER BALANCE AND A SOUND NIGHT'S SLEEP

LIMIT CAFFEINE: It takes a long time for caffeine to get out of your system, so avoid it late in the day. Typically, have your last caffeinated drink 10 hours before your bedtime. BE ACTIVE: Physical activity reduces stress and improves sleep. One exception is not to do a hard workout right before bed as it might be tough to wind down for a while afterwards. UNWIND EARLY: Turn off screens well before bedtime. Bright screens can mess with your body’s sleep mechanisms, so turn off TVs, tablets and smartphones earlier in the evening. Take the dog out, brush your teeth, get into your pyjamas, and get into bed before the time you want to be asleep. BRAIN DUMP FOR THE NEXT DAY: Spend 5-10 minutes each night writing a list of to-do items to ensure you hit the pillow feeling organised and in control. Set out your clothes the evening before: This small task can save you a lot of last-minute rushing. Take the extra five minutes now when you have it. COOL, DARK AND QUIET: When it comes to sleep, you want it cool, dark and quiet. Adjust the temperature or get a fan going, hang some blackout curtains and try to reduce any noise near your bedroom. BUY AN ALARM CLOCK: This will help you to avoid being distracted by notifications should you wake and check the time in the middle of the night. Set an alarm right now for tonight. When it goes off, start your evening routine so you get into bed on time for a good night’s sleep! Here at Activate, we promote and encourage balance to ensure we are living a happy and healthy life. Sleep is one very essential and key component of this. We hope these tips help you get some much-needed rest! When you combine great sleep with sound nutrition and solid training, you’ll feel amazing and make more progress toward your goals.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Supports for people who are unable to work due to illness or disability QUESTION: What Social Welfare (SW) supports are there for people who have to take time off work due to illness? ANSWER: There are a number of illness related SW payments. If you have an accident at work or while travelling directly to or from work (on an unbroken journey) you would be eligible to apply for Injury Benefit if you are off for at least six days (not including Sunday or Public Holiday). If you are working as an employee and have enough PRSI paid, you will generally go on to Illness Benefit first. This payment is not available to self-employed people. It is paid for a maximum of two years. Illness Benefit is not linked to your employer’s policy on pay for sick leave. Whether your employer pays you or not while you are out sick from work, you should claim Illness Benefit from the first day of your illness. Q. Does an employer have to pay sick pay if an employee is out sick? A: In general, you have no legal right to be paid while you are on sick leave from work. Currently it is at the discretion of the employer whether or not sick pay is paid. Employees should check what it says in their contract of employment. This is due to change in 2022 and legislation will have to be enacted to bring in a legal entitlement to some paid sick leave. Q. What changes are proposed in 2022? A: Firstly, it is important to state that this is a draft scheme. Changes may take place before it is enacted. At present it is planned that the draft scheme will introduce: Paid sick leave for up to three sick days in 2022. This is planned to increase to five days in 2023, seven days in 2024 and 10 days in 2025. A rate of payment for statutory sick leave of 70% of normal wages to be paid by employers (up to a maximum €110 per day). To be entitled to paid sick leave under the new scheme, you must be working for your employer for at least six months. You will also need to be certified by a GP as unfit to work. Q. Can you get Illness Benefit and sick pay at the same time? A: You can apply for Illness Benefit

while you are also getting sick pay. But if your employer already provides sick pay, they will probably ask you to sign over any Illness Benefit payment to them for as long as the sick pay continues. Q. What happens if you do not have enough PRSI contributions for Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension? A: In this situation, if you have a longterm illness or disability that has continued for at least one year or is expected to continue for at least one year and as a result you are substantially restricted from taking up suitable employment you would be applying for Disability Allowance. This is a means tested payment. If you have a short-term illness e.g. broke a bone and you do not qualify for Illness Benefit, your only option would be to apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance which is a shortterm emergency payment. This is also means tested. Q. Is it different if somebody has to take sick leave due to COVID-19? A: If a worker is told to self-isolate, restrict their movements or diagnosed with COVID-19, they can apply for a COVID-19 enhanced Illness Benefit payment of €350 per week. Both employees and self-employed people can qualify for the COVID-19 enhanced Illness Benefit. This payment remains in place until February 8, 2022. Q. What happens to my annual leave when I am off sick? A: If you become ill during your annual leave and get a medical certificate for the days you are ill, these sick days will not be counted as annual leave days. Instead, you can use the same number of days as annual leave at a later date. An employer cannot insist that you take annual leave on days you are off sick, if you have a medical certificate for those days. You can build up your annual leave entitlement while you are off sick, as long as you have a medical certificate. If you are on long-term sick leave and cannot take your annual leave due to illness, you can carry it over for up to 15 months after the end of the year it was earned. If you leave your job within these 15 months, you should get payment instead of the leave you did not take due to illness.

watch Dig Deeper: The Disappearance of Birgit Meier | RELEASED: TODAY (FRIDAY)

A brother never wavers in his tireless quest to find the truth about his missing sister after she vanishes in 1989. Police missteps plague the case of missing Birgit Meier for years. A few weeks after her disappearance, connections between German serial killer Kurt-Werner Wichmann and her became apparent. In the early days of the investigation, police suspected suicide or that it was the husband, but later focused on the Lüneberg cemetery gar-

dener Kurt-Werner Wichmann, whom the disappeared had previously met at a party, according to statements from the husband. He had previously done gardening work at Meier’s neighbours. Wichmann was interrogated, and despite the flimsy alibi of being with his wife, it was not checked closely. He also concealed the fact that he was on sick leave at the time of Meier’s disappearance, but the police did not ask further.

Tralee man wins Colgate Caring Dentist of the Year The compassionate and caring nature of a Tralee dentist when he came to the rescue of a traumatised teen has helped him secure a national award. Dr Colm O’Loghlen of Bridge Street Dental Practice was announced this week as this year’s 'Colgate Caring Dentist of the Year 2021'. Dr O’Loghlen was recognised for the compassionate treatment and exceptional clinical skills he provided to a traumatised teenager after the teen lost his two front teeth in a face-first fall from a wall. The dentist was nominated by the 15-year-old’s mother who put a call out on social media after being told that there was no dentist available in the local hospital to treat her son. Thankfully, Dr O’Loghlen came to their aid. “My son was holding his two front teeth in his hands, and we felt hopeless,” the boy’s mother said. “It was clear that he had done severe damage to his face and teeth.” By this time, it was late on a Saturday night and her son was becoming increasingly distressed. Dr O’Loghlen responded and told the mother and son to meet him at the surgery immediately. There, despite the stitches in the boy’s lips and significant swelling on his face, Dr O’Loghlen managed to re-implant the two front teeth successfully. “When we arrived at the surgery that

night, my son was distraught. But Dr O’Loghlen quickly put us at ease. His calm demeanour reassured us that we were in safe hands, and we are sincerely grateful for the help we got that night, and the care we still receive. “Dr O’Loghlen has not only helped to restore my son’s teeth, but he has also restored his confidence too. As a mother, I cannot thank him enough.” As well as winning the overall honour, Dr O’Loghlen was also announced as the regional winner for Munster. The 'Colgate Caring Dentist of the Year Awards 2021' were held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Burlington Road, Dublin on Saturday night. The aim of the awards to is give patients a platform to celebrate the dentists in their local communities who have provided dental

treatment and care that has exceeded expectations. Hosted by the Irish Dental Association and title sponsor Colgate, this year saw almost one thousand nominations received from dental patients and their families all over the country. “We congratulate all of our winners and nominees and celebrate with them their achievements," President of the Irish Dental Association, Dr Clodagh McAllister, said. "Despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the dental professional has continued to show a dedication, resilience, and determination in providing exceptional standards of care that has had, as proven by all this year’s winners and nominees, transformative effects on the patients being cared for."

Vehicles came to a sudden stop in Southern California on the Interstate 5 after an armored car accidently spilled cash across the freeway. However, those who jumped out to grab the money are being advised by police to give it all back. The car with the cash had been travelling north along the I-5 in Carlsbad at about 9.15am when one of the doors unexpectedly swung open and bags of cash flew out. Cars pulled over onto the hard shoulder and in the middle of the road, as they raced to collect $1s and $20s bills which began to fall to the ground. "I highly suggest to anybody that picked up cash out here — it's not your cash, so turn it in immediately to the CHP office in Vista," CHP Sgt. Curtis Martin said. Two people were arrested and police are also working with the FBI to identify those who may not have turned the money in.

Over 180 Census Enumerators to be hired in Kerry Census 2022 will take place on Sunday, April 3 next year and the Central Statistics Office (CSO) needs to hire 189 Census Enumerators to deliver and collect forms to and from every home in Kerry. They will be required to work 10 weeks part-time, between February 28 and May 6, 2022. An online application process opened yesterday (Thursday) at www.census.ie. The results from the Census are vital to planning the future of public services in Kerry and across the country. To deliver a successful Census the team of enu-

merators will be required to deliver and collect census forms to approximately 54,000 households across the county. "A Census Enumerator is a job that really counts," Census Enumerator, Eileen Murphy, Head of Census Administration, said. "Those who undertake this rewarding position will be providing a valuable service to the people of Kerry, by ensuring future policy decisions are made based on their community's needs.” She added that the role of the Census Enumerator is best suited to a people person who enjoys meeting and engag-

ing with new people. "It is important that you can work well on your own. The job does require some persistence, as you may need to visit some homes multiple times to secure a response. Good weather in spring in Ireland is not guaranteed, so you need to be ready for working outdoors in all weathers.” The application process is expected to remain open until December 3. However, early applications are recommended as the CSO will cease taking applications once they have reached the required number.

Ireland’s adventure racing champions honoured The winners of the 2021 Continental Tyres National Adventure Race Series have been honoured, after a pandemic-enforced hiatus in 2020.

Charity on a mission to 'Light Up The Sky' The Irish Community Air Ambulance is asking supporters and businesses to help it 'Light Up The Sky' and sponsor a star to fund life-saving missions. Each donation made through the organisation’s website will light a virtual star and supporters can also leave a message for the crew or light a star in honour of a loved one. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is Ireland’s only charity-funded Air Ambulance. It responds to serious incidents and medical emergencies every day of the year, including Christmas Day, from its base in Rathcoole, Co Cork. There were 42 taskings during December 2020, including one on Christmas Day. Each helicopter mission costs an average of €3,500, all of which has to be raised or donated. The HEMS Air Ambulance has been tasked by the National Ambulance Service to 468 incidents so far in 2021. One in five calls has been to cardiac arrests, followed by road traffic collisions

and farming incidents. Cork accounts for more than a third of all incidents (37%), followed by Kerry with 23%. Both Tipperary and Clare account for 12% of missions in 2021. Kerry, Tipperary and Clare have all seen an increase in taskings when compared to 2020. “Our team of pilots and National Ambulance Service paramedics will be on standby throughout the holidays," CEO of the Irish Community Air Ambulance, Micheál Sheridan, said. "Whilst many of us will be enjoying Christmas Day with family and friends our crew will be away from theirs and will be available to respond if they are required. The cost to run the charity this year is €2.1 million; the HEMS Air Ambulance alone is expected to cost €1.55m this year. By buying a star on our website you are helping us to light up the sky and bring hope to people in emergency situations in our communities this Christmas.” To buy a star or to make a donation visit www.communityairambulance.ie.

The 12 prize winners in both the male and female series, including expert and sport categories, took part in five of Ireland’s most challenging adventure races to claim a podium finish in this year’s series. Ellen Vitting (Kerry) won the 2021 Expert Women category, while Sebastien Giraud (Dublin) triumphed in the Expert Men category. In the Sport category, Niamh Cleary (Meath) won the women’s race, with John Mullin (Mayo) victorious in the men’s series. The Continental Tyres National Adventure Race Series is a national multi-sport adventure racing competition (running/ cycling/kayaking) that takes place in some of the most spectacular locations in the country. The series commenced in Kenmare and concluded in Glendalough, Co Wicklow on October 30 and included races in all four provinces. The popular adventure race series returned in September this year after being postponed due to the COVID pandemic in 2020 and includes two competition categories (expert/sport) for female and male competitors. This expert course is a longer race, requiring additional competitor endurance covering a long off-road and mountain trail run, a challenging cycle route and solo kayak. The sport category competitors take part in a shorter but noticeably faster and more intensive race on the same terrain as the expert course. Series highlights this year included a first

visit to the FEAR event in Fermanagh, while the final event took place at the popular Quest in Glendalough where over 1,200 adventure racing enthusiasts got to grips with the rugged Wicklow landscape. “As always, this year’s series was very tough, very demanding, and required huge drive and commitment, so our 12 prize winners can be proud of what they have achieved and provide an inspiration to the thousands that took part in the series’ events each year,” Paul Mahon, National Adventure Race Series founder and Adventure Racing Ireland coordinator said.

Sweden votes in first Truck drivers disrupt female prime minister city traffic in protest Traffic was heavily disrupted in Dublin on Wednesday as convoys of heavy goods vehicles protested over fuel costs. The Irish Truckers And Haulage Association Against Fuel Prices is calling for “lower fuel costs at the pump and at home” saying that the protest was for the people of Ireland. They made their way from the main arterial routes in Dublin to Kildare Street on Wednesday. One lorry driver said that truckers are currently paying an extra €350 a week to fill a tank. “We want the Government to address

the nation on this cause," Fintan McDermott, said. “If we don’t get a change, a lot of small operators will be out of business sooner than you think. If we don’t get an answer we will be back in bigger numbers for a week before Christmas. We are not making the extra €350 a week to pay for it. It’s not sustainable because if you fill twice a week, that is €700. You have to make up the extra money but you are not making enough because you are still only doing the same amount of work. It’s cutting into everything. The truck drivers aren’t getting paid extra money. The delivery charges are not creeping up.”

Sweden's first female prime minister was voted in on Wednesday.

However, as soon as Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson took the position she immediately faced a crisis over a budget vote that her Government looked set to lose. Andersson became the country's first woman premier after centre-left Prime Minister Stefan Lofven formally resigned two weeks ago. Of the 349 members of the Riksdag, 174 voted against her but on top of the 117 MPs who backed her, a further 57 abstained. The 54-year-old had been the country's finance minister since 2014 but now faces the prospect of governing on

spending priorities determined by the centre-right. "We cannot support a budget from a government which is moving far to the left, which we think the incoming government is doing," Centre Party leader Annie Loof told reporters.

GARDENMAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Planning and preparing a vegetable garden The glorious sunshine we have had has really inspired me to get stuck in and start preparing a new vegetable garden for next year. I, as many of the readers of this column, have had several attempts and failures at vegetable gardening, and I have decided 2022 is going to be different. So I have begun from scratch, on a smaller scale than before, and armed with a plan. The ground, though wet, is not as saturated as it could be, so I thought it a good time to start off my raised beds for veggie planting. As my topsoil is fairly shallow - only about 20cm in many places - and I have a solid clay underneath, I decided to dig out paths using that topsoil to raise my beds. I have put weed suppressant on the clay path, run a drainage pipe along the path and put a good layer of gravel on top. I am determined to have a sound structure to work from, so ease of use must come first! My paths are wide enough to accommodate a wheelbarrow and the corners of my beds are rounded to make it easier to manoeuvre said wheelbarrow. My beds are 16ft long by 4ft - as that is the length timber comes in, and who wants to waste time and energy sawing? In the past, I felt I had to use every bit of space in the bed to grow something but I have placed stepping stones at handy intervals throughout, rather than standing on the soil. These are small things, but in the haste to buy seeds and start growing, I have always made a sort of a slap dash job of the actual ground.

THREE YEAR CYCLE

Next, I built three new compost bins. I have a large garden, and, to be honest, the compost bins available to buy are just too small. Previously, I have used the three pallet system - which is basically a bay made out of three pallets nailed together. Five pallets will give you two bays, and so on. I am a firm believer in the

need for three bays. Bay 1: where current matter is deposited. Bay 2: untouched and composting for a year. Bay 3: the oldest, which should be useable compost. For me, this corresponds to a three year cycle, as I find my compost takes that long to develop. The one thing which I have changed to this system is that I have used reconstituted decking boards rather than pallets. It looks so much neater, and will be far more sturdy and durable. Unfortunately my garden has become riddled with a most tenacious and prolific weed, called Woundwort. There are several types, all identifiable by the square, hairy stems, purple flower spikes and slightly pungent smell. I don’t know where mine came from as I have not seen them in my area, but it really likes where it is. Not realising its true nature, I left it alone last year. To be fair to it, pollinators, especially bumblebees, absolutely love it and land on it in amazing numbers. This year, the original square meter has expanded to at least 10 square meters, and as it grows easily from seed, it is absolutely everywhere now. Oh, and did I mention its underground network of rhizomes? Take care, fellow gardener, if you see it, burn it! This area has been painstakingly dug up, as many roots as possible removed, and covered in black polythene. And so it will remain for at least a year - I am not taking chances! The rest of my beds I have covered with a thick layer of compost and old farmyard manure. To prevent weeds establishing before we even get started, I have covered each bed with weed suppressant - from experience I know that our mild winters will not stop some weeds from growing. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I have included a good few seating possibilities - as I am beginning to feel my age... though, apart from age, sometimes it is just wonderful to sit and plan, or ponder, or just watch nature do its thing – that is part of being a gardener, don’t you agree?

Local drivers lead out Cannonball 4x4 The two local drivers who participated in last weekend’s Cannonball 4x4 Overland had the honour of leading the convoy as it made its way through South Kerry. The new for 2021 event arrived at Killarney’s Great Southern Hotel on Friday evening. Car enthusiasts were in awe at the sight of several high-end off road vehicles including a Bentley Bentayga, a Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, Range Rover SVRs, a BMW X5 M-Sport, and many more. The Saturday leg of the two-day charity road run featured roads in South Kerry including Bealach Oisin Pass and Ballaghbeama Gap. Two local drivers, who were both driving Ford Raptors, had the honour of lead-

ing the convoy through these daunting South Kerry roads. The drivers were Donal O’Sullivan from Kilcummin also better known as Killarney’s Cleaning Doctor, and Henry Bartlett from Farranfore, who runs Independent Irish Health Foods. Donal was joined by Ryan Doherty, Sligo’s Cleaning Doctor. Henry had his wife Paula alongside after she paid the entry fee as a birthday present to her husband. “Believe it or not,” said Henry, “This will be my first time driving the Gap of Dunloe.” Cannonball events raise funds for The HOPE Foundation, an Irish charity working with the street children of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India.

How much is too much? Last week, banks, airlines, and other economically sensitive sectors felt the brunt of rising COVID cases across Europe. Major tech names and strong retail earnings did enough to counteract the negative pandemic sentiment with the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ finishing the week up 0.4% and 1.3%, respectively. This week, sentiment looks to be against the stock market as it remains under pressure from a bond market that is looking increasingly jittery as the FED starts to wind down its asset purchases.

SENTIMENT SHIFT

'Travel, good - stay at home, bad' has been the default position for markets over recent months. The likes of Marriot International and Airbnb have been rewarded while stay-at-home names such as Peloton and Zoom have cratered. Peloton has fallen over 70% from its pandemic highs, while Zoom has already slipped another 20% this week alone as investors reacted to a

further slowdown in revenue growth. However, with COVID cases now rising again and lockdown measures being put in place across Europe, our heightened need for these stay-at-home names may not be over. Don't write these pandemic darlings off just yet. While momentum is likely to remain negative over the short term, the new lower price point will make for a more compelling investment.

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Nvidia: +161% YTD Last week, Nvidia continued its phenomenal run as the tech giant reported a 50% jump in Q3 sales. Nvidia is now the seventh-largest company in America and could soon become just the sixth company to reach a Trillion-dollar Market Cap. While Nvidia's valuation multiplies are astronomically high, fixating on trailing earnings multiples has not been a

rewarding investment strategy over recent years. "The best performing stocks in the current era have never given you an opportunity to own them at parity with the market's multiple or below. And why would they have? Shouldn't the highest quality, fastest growing, best positioned companies have stocks that sell at a premium to the stocks of lesser firms?" - Josh Brown While much of the future growth is already priced in, and 'quality at any price' is a potential pitfall, there is no denying that Nvidia is perfectly positioned to maintain its market-leading position well into the future. Almost every company in the world will need to incorporate a digital and virtual arm in years to come. It's not just the tech giants that will drive future order flow. Nike, for example, just announced last week that it is entering the metaverse via the launch of a virtual world known as 'Nikeland' on Roblox. Nike will be building an online store for Roblox us-

ers to try on virtual apparel, and it will have an arena for playing games mimicking the likes of the Super Bowl and the World Cup. Nike is not alone in this digital push as more and more companies look for ways to appeal to a younger audience. As we move closer to a virtual world and the mythical metaverse becomes a reality, Nvidia's hefty valuation may become a little easier to comprehend. Prepare your home for the onset of winter As winter is upon us, here are some tips to help you prepare and protect your home and property from inclement weather. CHECK FOR CRACKS Check there are no cracks in any bricks, slates or tiles as water can get into them, freeze, expand and cause damage. All parts of a fixed water system, such as boilers, radiator stop values, taps and all piping should be inspected by a qualified plumber at least once a year.

CLEAN THE CHIMNEY

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

Don’t forget to sweep the chimney as upswept chimneys are a potential fire hazard especially after a period of dry weather. Clearing your gutters and drains will go a long way to protecting your property from rain damage. Clearing moss from driveways and patios is

also recommended. Apply insulating lagging to pipes particularly in cold areas like the attic, outbuildings or where pipes are external. Water tanks and cisterns should also be fitted with adequate lagging insulation. Please ensure that insulation is on top of roof piping, not under, to benefit from heating coming from below.

ALARMS Check all the house alarms are in working order; smoke, carbon monoxide and intruder alarms. Leaving the attic door open while the heating is on will allow warm air to reach pipes high up in the attic and prevent them from freezing.

Know where your stop valve is, so that if you do have a leak, you can turn off the water. If you are away from home during the winter set the heating to come on when the temperature drops below a certain point to prevent freezing. The coldest time is between 1am and 3am.

UNOCCUPIED HOMES

If your home is to be unoccupied for an extended period, inform your insurers and drain the water system so that freezing of pipes cannot occur. Finally it is recommended to make sure the whole family know what to do if you have a burst pipe or storm damage. Please check on the well-being of elderly neighbours and ask a friend or relation to check your house on a daily basis if you are away during the winter months.

Munster rents are higher than a year ago The recently published daft.ie Q3 rental market report shows that national average rents have increased by 6.7% - the strongest year-onyear increase since early 2019.

TED HEALY | ASCSI ARICSDip AVEA DNG TED HEALY 11 New Street, Killarney, Co Kerry

Munster rents are now 15.6% higher than a year ago, and the increase in rents around the country reflects an on-going and unprecedented scarcity of rental homes. Nationwide, there were just 1,460 homes available to rent on November 1, an all-time low in a series that extends back to January 2006. Indeed, the level of availability now is almost half the lowest level recorded between the start of 2006 and the outbreak of COVID-19,

which was 2,706 in mid-2019. While Dublin had initially seen an increase in availability after the start of the pandemic, there were just 820 homes available to rent on November 1, the lowest ever recorded for the city in two decades. In Dublin and in the other cities, the stock of homes to rent is between 70% and 80% lower than a year ago. Outside the cities, availability continues to fall – with just 559 homes to rent, down almost half on a year ago. While rents rose around the country between June and September, there remains significant differences in annual inflation rates. Rents in Dublin are just

2.7% higher than a year ago, while rents in Cork and Galway are 6.9% and 8.3% higher. Inflation in Limerick and Waterford cities is higher again, at 8.9% and 10% respectively, while rents outside the cities are 11.9% higher than a year ago. In parts of Connacht, rents rose by 20% in the twelve months to September. COVID-19 temporarily reshuffled Ireland’s rental problems but the latest figures confirm those problems of shortages are getting worse over time. While Dublin had initially seen an increase in rental availability, with the number of rental homes on the market doubling from 1,600 to nearly 3,200 in 2020, those trends have reversed rapidly, with just over 800 homes available to rent on November 1. In Ireland’s four other cities, there were 81 homes available to rent in total! The average rental price for a property in Kerry is now €1,070 reflecting a year on year increase of 19.2%.

Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. O’SULLIVAN

In loving memory of John Anthony O’Sullivan late of Ballydaly, Rathmore, Co. Kerry 01st January 1940 ~ 26th November 2020 Anne, and the Family of the Late John Anthony O’Sullivan, Ballydaly would like to express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all those who helped and supported us during his illness, funeral and in the past 12 months. The final days, were made so much more comfortable due to the professionalism and care of the following The District Nurses Maureen, Marie, Teresa and Sharon. Homehelp Christina, The doctors at Tullig Medical Centre, staff of Mallow Hospital, Staff of Millstreet Hospital, Reens Pharmacy, Nightcare Tim, Staff of Marymount Hospice, Palliative Nurses Phil, Bina, Kathy and Eileen, Fr Jack and Fr. Sean, his passing was made so much easier by the sensitively of Daffodil Nurse Phil, South Doc & Davy Tarrant Undertaker. The Funeral Mass was exactly as John Anthony would have liked. This was down to the attention to detail and passion that Sharon in Parish office, Fr Pat, Fr. Sean, Sacristan Julie and Singer Joan put into the ceremony. We were so grateful to Sean Radley that the ceremony was streamed to Millstreet Hospital for Anne. We were very humbled by the friends, neighbours and extended family that lined the road from Ballydaly to Millstreet when he left his home at 8.30am on that Friday morning. And all those that stood outside the church and at the Graveyard where the final prayers were broadcast over his own public address speakers. We would like to sincerely thank everyone who wrote messages of sympathy on RIP.ie, sent Mass Cards and took the time ring or text. Your thoughtfulness was appreciated. Covid may have kept everyone physically apart, but we have never felt so surrounded by people with kind hearts and generous natures. There were so many gestures of kindness and goodwill from so many people that we, as a family, appreciated and will never forget. We won’t name these individuals as there were so many, we’re afraid we’d forget someone. A Mass for all those mentioned (and those not) has been offered for your intentions in St Patricks Church. Millstreet

PRAYER TO ST. MARGARET Dear Saint Margaret, before your Martyrdom you prayed that whenever an expectant mother ask’s for your protection, her child might be born without harm, because a voice from heaven assured you that your prayers were heard. Help me now in my need, look after myself, watch over my infant and protect both of us all our lives. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, mother of God and infinite mercy of her son, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Historic playoff between Legion and Crokes fixed for noon on Sunday, December 5 December is almost upon us and there has been a notable turn in the weather this past week. The nights are icy cold. In the morning the town is coated with a thick layer of white frost. There’s a noticeable chill in the air around the streets and laneways of Killarney. And not all of it is meteorological. Dr Crokes’ championship exit at the hands of Kerins O’Rahillys has edged them one step closer to the unthinkable. Their failure to reach the county final means that the monumental relegation showdown with bitter rivals Legion will now go ahead, with the date set for the first Sunday of winter. In a town that is utterly obsessed with its football and its famous football clubs, defeat will spell disaster. For one tribe, this battle could signal the beginning of winter in more ways than one.

FEROCIOUS

The team from Lewis Road could have avoided this playoff had they managed

RIVALS: Daithí Casey of Dr Crokes up against Billy McGuire of Legion. The Killarney rivals will clash in a massive relegation playoff on Sunday week.

to defeat Rahillys in Sunday’s county semi-final; exemption from relegation is assured to any side who reach the final of the Kerry Senior Football Championship. Leading by six points early in the second half, it looked like they were on their way, but a ferocious fightback by their Tralee opponents turned the tie on its head. Strand Road came out swinging in that second period and they delivered the knockout blow – quite literally in the case of Crokes keeper Shane Murphy, who was knocked unconscious in a nasty-looking collision in the 47th minute. Somehow the Rahillys player escaped with just a yellow, but more telling for Edmund O’Sullivan’s side was Murphy’s absence for the remainder of the game. Momentum shifted in their opponents’ favour thereafter and with David Moran bursting into life around the middle and the triumvirate of Keane, Savage and Hayes doing the damage inside, Rahillys secured a narrow one-point victory. The availability of Murphy, who is un-

doubtedly one of Crokes’ most important players, for the playoff is now one of the biggest talking points. This is in question on two counts. Firstly, there is the medical question of whether or not he will be cleared to play after sustaining a head injury. Secondly, there appears to be a disciplinary question as the former Kerry captain was apparently sent off after Crokes’ draw with Kenmare in the Club Championship. If the playoff were to be considered part of the Club Championship, then Murphy would be suspended for the match. However, sources have indicated that the county board have deemed the playoff to be a separate competition entirely, therefore freeing up Murphy to take part. Music to the ears of Crokes fans, although Legion supporters might be questioning the logic behind that decision. Sunday’s loss was harrowing for Crokes but there were positives too, perhaps most notably the performance of the evergreen Johnny Buckley who dominated

the majority of the midfield exchanges. In fact, there was plenty to like about the Killarney side’s first half display with most of their players winning their individual contests.

LEGION’S LAYOFF By the time the playoff comes around, Legion will have been out of action for four weeks, which is hardly ideal. Their form this season has been disappointing by their own standards so they are likely to enter this encounter as underdogs. That being said, they were underdogs for the 2019 O’Donoghue Cup final – the last time these sides met in a championship match – and they gave their old foes a sound beating that day. It promises to be an intriguing fixture but for now Crokes’ attention turns to the East Kerry Championship. Their semi-final against Rathmore will take place in Kilcummin on Sunday at 2pm. In the other semi, Spa face Glenflesk on Saturday at 2pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium.

‘Give penalties the boot’ • 68% of Killarney Advertiser readers think penalty shootouts are wrong for GAA • Survey finds that free-taking shootout is the best possible alternative Local Gaelic football supporters are largely against the practice of deciding matches with penalty shootouts, a poll carried out by the Killarney Advertiser can reveal. Over two-thirds (68%) of those surveyed said they don’t think that penalties are “right” for the GAA with the remaining 32% on the other side of the fence. Traditionally exclusive to the game of soccer, penalty shootouts were first introduced to Kerry GAA competitions in 2020 as a method of settling fixtures “on the day”. This was deemed necessary as there was less time for replays due to the profound effect the coronavirus pandemic had on last year’s sporting calendar. A number of high-profile Kerry club matches have gone to penalties since they were introduced, including last season’s County League final between Austin Stacks and Rathmore, last month’s Kerry SFC Round 1 match between Legion and Spa, and Saturday’s county semi-final between Stacks and St Brendan’s. Stacks emerged victorious in that televised last four clash as former Kerry player Kieran Donaghy scored the winning kick to send the Tralee club

through to the final. Before penalty shootouts became the norm, drawn GAA matches went to extra-time and then a replay if necessary. Sorting a match out on the day is now commonplace, although some observers have voiced reservations about adopting what is effectively a soccer exercise. When asked for their thoughts on penalties, a number of respondents to our survey made the same or similar observations. “Penalties do not encapsulate the basic skills of Gaelic football,” one reader said. “Kicking from the hand is the key fundamental skill of the sport so that seems a more fair and apt way to decide a game.” Another fan commented: “Penalties are for soccer. Marks are for Aussie Rules. Can we come up with anything ourselves?” However, some respondents said that penalties were “fine” and a few suggested that they be used for any game bar a final.

OTHER OPTIONS

When asked to select the “best” alternative method of deciding a Gaelic football match from a list provided by the Killarney Advertiser, over 40% of the people

surveyed opted for a free-taking shootout from 35 metres. ‘More extra-time’ was the second most popular option with 23.61% of the vote. An additional period of ‘next score wins’ was next up on just under 20%, with a 1 v 1 ice-hockey-style shootout, which would see the kicker

carry the ball in hand before shooting for goal, was selected by 16% of supporters. Whether or not the GAA are open to changing things up is uncertain. For the time-being, at least, it appears as though football matches will continue to be decided using this method.

Controversy mars county semi-final 64

26.11.2021

Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on last weekend’s Kerry SFC action as Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahillys prevailed in two incredibly dramatic last four matches It will be an all-Tralee Kerry SFC final between Stacks and Rahillys in Austin Stack Park on December 5. There was great drama and pulsating finishes in both semi-finals as plenty of controversy masked a good deal of poor-quality football. Stacks won the televised match in a penalty shootout, and a last-minute Dr Crokes free by David Shaw from a very acute angle went marginally outside the post to send Kerins O’Rahillys through to the final by a single point. |

Austin Stacks 2-9 St Brendan’s 1-12

Stacks won 5-3 on pens All the excitement in this low-scoring affair was packed into extra-time and the penalty shoot-out as 39-year-old Kieran Donaghy delivered the crucial kick to send the Rockies into the county final. It was cruel luck on St Brendan’s, who just cannot get into a county final after so many near misses in semis. Stacks were hot favourites going into this game, but I gave St Brendan’s a great chance of upsetting the odds. They had Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry, the two Kerry midfielders, to lead them and ace forward Ivan Parker to bring in after recovering from injury. Furthermore, and crucially, for all their possession, Stacks’ possession to scores ratio is poor for aspiring champions. They have to depend too much on points from frees and require goals. Two goals should have opened the gates for a convincing victory but full credit to Brendan’s for staying in contention, especially when they lost their best player at the start of the second half. Diarmuid O’Connor came down heavily on his shoulder and his loss was immense, particularly when the game went into extra-time. Stacks took the initiative from the start and just kept their noses in front, leading 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval. Then came that goal in the 56th minute via an Eoghan O’Brien OG to set Stacks on the road to victory, 1-6 to 0-6. But Brendan’s

didn’t buckle and Stacks didn’t push on. Parker was impressive. The game went into extra-time and substitute Quilter’s kick deceived Eoghan O’Brien in the Brendan’s goal. Stacks went 2-8 to 0-10 clear. Full credit to Brendan’s and thanks to Parker’s late goal, it ended with that penalty shootout. Ironically, Parker missed his penalty, opening the door to Austin Stacks who secured their place in the final. |

Kerins O’Rahillys 0-15 Dr Crokes 0-14

Dr Crokes had a six-point lead early in the second half, powered by the display of Johnny Buckley, their most valuable player. But, after a poor first half, Kerins O’Rahillys had their best period after half-time, scoring into the John Mitchels end. Jack Savage was deadly accurate from frees and the wily Barry John Keane chipped in with his usual three points, which proved most valuable. Shane Murphy, the Crokes goalkeeper, was badly injured in a crunch tackle at the three-quarter stage when he was fielding a high ball. He was taken out of it in a very dangerous tackle, which left him concussed and unable to play any further part in the game. A straight red. Not so, however. GUBU (grotesque, unprecedented, bizarre, unbelievable) all over again. That was just one incident that went unpunished, as did persistent fouling. Too often some players were allowed play the man and not the ball, ultimately resulting in several red, yellow and black cards. A fire brigade reaction, but the horse had bolted. Losing their goalkeeper was a game changer for the Killarney side. With Rahillys dominating, they needed his long and accurate kickouts to raise the siege and set up attacks. Adam Kelly did the best he could, but with the short, unsure kickouts Crokes had a much longer journey to the Dunnes Stores end goalposts. Conditions were perfect on an unseasonably sunny November afternoon and the match surface was splendid. Strangely enough, both sides were cul-

pable of poor shooting in the opening period. Untypically, Crokes kicked five wides before Tony Brosnan opened the scoring in the 13th minute. With Johnny Buckley lording midfield, well aided by the youthful Mark O’Shea who was outplaying David Moran (Moran really only came into the game in the last 10 minutes), Crokes tacked on the points. Rahillys also kicked some wides but the Crokes defence did well. None more so than Mike Moloney, who counteracted the big Rahillys ploy of launching missiles into the Crokes square. Smiler was the big man to mark the other big man on the big day. He was well supported by Gavin White and Fionn Fitzgerald. The prospects looked good for Dr Crokes at half-time as they led eight points to three. Rahillys had scored just one point from play in the first half and that came from Keane. Brosnan was on target for Crokes, kicking 0-4 points, 0-3 from play. The ever-reliable Brian Looney also kicked two from play.

CHANGES NEEDED

Micheál Burns never really got going but he did make it 0-9 to 0-3 upon the restart. Burns and Kieran O’Leary didn’t play up to their usual high standards and it was very surprising that Crokes didn’t make changes much earlier with plenty of options in the subs. They kept Jordi Kiely on the bench until the 58th minute, Daithí Casey until the 60th and Tom Doyle until the 66th. It looked like a mountain to climb for Rahillys when they went six points behind but they buckled down to the challenge and reduced the deficit, mainly through the free-taking of Jack Savage who finished the game with 0-8. Keane and Conor Hayes punished Crokes in the final quarter and both men ended up with 0-3 each. Crokes did rally with substitute Kiely making a belated entry. He wiggled his way through a packed Rahillys defence to snatch a lovely point and he also assisted in a further score. Still one point adrift, Crokes substitute Daithí Casey did very well to carry the ball down the left wing where he was eventually fouled on the 13-metre line, just inside the line on the railway side.

It was a very acute angle for David Shaw. One last chance to draw the game. He struck it very well, drawing it in from the right, but unfortunately not enough. He left it just outside the right post and victory was secured for Kerins O’Rahillys by 15 points to 14.

GOAL CHANCES

There were only two real goal chances in the game, both in the latter stages, when a goal would have decided the issue very definitely. Brian Looney came to the aid of Kelly by getting back to somehow flick the ball to safety. At the other end, Johnny Buckley made a great burst, weaving his way through a crowded defence. Mark O’Shea broke free close to goal but Rahillys put up the shutters and David Moran scrambled the ball to safety. I fully appreciate the intensity of championship football, but the rules of the game must be applied to protect the players. Dangerous play should not go unpunished. Fortunately, this game wasn’t televised; it was a brand of Kerry football that wouldn’t enhance the high esteem in which our game is held nationwide.

GNEEVEGUILLA WIN

Gneeveguilla are Kerry Premier Junior champions and it is no more than they deserved, compensating for losing the 2020 final to Annascaul. They defeated Skellig Rangers 12-9 AET. They were also coming off a loss to neighbours and fierce rivals Rathmore in the 2020 O’Donoghue Cup. Gneeveguilla had a point to prove and typical of the club they bounced back on Saturday last in the Fitzgerald Stadium. They were taken to extra-time but should have made sure in normal time. They kicked wide after wide, 18 in all, and left Skellig Rangers in the contest. They struggled early on but moving Pa Warren to centre forward kick-started their efforts. However, they still trailed by a point in this low-scoring encounter. A goal was need to unhinge this contest, but neither side could manage a green flag. Gneeveguilla sub Con Brosnan edged them in front for the first time in the 50th minute. It was all square in the 54th minute when Keith Brennan levelled for

65

26.11.2021 the South Kerry side. Neither team could snatch a winner and so to extra time. Former Kerry minor Paudie O’Leary was best for Gneeveguilla in overtime as they clinched the title.

EAMONN FITZGERALD

HISTORY MAKERS

Gneeveguilla and Dr Crokes players of the past were focussed on the championship games on last weekend but for some, memories of 50 years ago to the day were recalled on Sunday. They remembered November 21, 1971 when Mick Gleeson captained East Kerry to win the inaugural All-Ireland SFC club title in Croke Park by defeating Bryansford (Down) 5-9 to 2-7. East Kerry had a star-studded team but were also fortunate to have outstanding administrators in Brendan Walsh and Denis Fenton who organised the campaign. Trainer (no mention of a team manager in those days) of that winning team was the indefatigable Donie Sheahan, who passed away just a few months ago in his 96th year. In one of my last conversations with the wholehearted Donie, he said that it was his sweetest memory in sport and that included Kerry, Dr Crokes and his horse racing wins, of course. His strategy for high-fielding midfielders Pat Moynihan and Pat Casey was fast-kicked delivery into the full forward line, and they would do the rest. They certainly did, scoring all five goals. Captain Mick Gleeson (two) showed the way for Domhnall Kavanagh (two) and Denis Coffey. Denis (RIP) is the only one of the starting 15 who has passed away. The attendance was small. No cup, just a shield. The Andy Merrigan Cup was presented from 1974 onwards in memory of the Wexford footballer of the same name. He died, as a young man in a farming accident. Divisional teams were barred from participating for the most coveted Cup in club football so East Kerry is the only divisional team to win the title. Delighted to note that junior and intermediate clubs can also now aspire to All-Ireland glory, thanks to the initiative of Seán Kelly, ex-President of the GAA. The 1971 All-Ireland winning East Kerry team lined out as follows: Eamonn Fitzgerald, Donie O'Sullivan, Derry Crowley, Jim Gleeson, Gerald Cullinane, Noel Power, Ger O'Donoghue, Pat Moynihan, Pat Casey, Paddy O'Donoghue, Dan O'Keeffe, Denis Healy, Denis Coffey, Mick Gleeson (c), Donal Kavanagh. Tom Looney came on as a replacement. Scorers: D Coffey 1-3, D Kavanagh 2-0, M Gleeson 2-1, D O'Keeffe 0-3, D Healy 0-2. The referee was Jimmy Hatton (Wicklow).

CHARLIE O’NEILL

The number of back-to-back days these young women train and play matches worries me

Our multisport youngsters are burned out and stressed out Competing in more than one sport and not getting enough rest is taking its toll on our young athletes, writes Charlie O’Neill In the past few weeks I’ve had the pleasure of returning to coaching a feisty and passionate school GAA team in North Kerry. These girls, ranging from 12-17 years of age, never fail to astound me with their knowledge and player-led approach to the game. I would go as far as to say that these girls and many more adolescent athletes are miles ahead of previous generations in understanding the extent of the mental and physical toll sport can take. However, even with such positivity, the number of back-to-back days these young women train and play matches worries me. One such player confided in me of a panic attack she had just experienced in the dressing room after I subbed her off due to a niggling injury. She was visibly shaken with a sense that she had let the team down. The same girl went on to reveal that she had a basketball match the previous day and football trials early the next morning, before topping it off with an important soccer game hours later. Does this sound all too familiar? The acknowledgement of player welfare and injury prevention has become a societal trend in Ireland in the adult game, amateur and professionals alike.

But, to paraphrase The Simpsons, will someone please think of the children? What I learned in only our second school football game of the season was that the girls were exhausted, with no off-season in sight for them to rest and replenish. While COVID played a role in the rush to fulfil sporting fixtures, those commendable adolescents who choose to compete in a combination of sports are struggling both physically and psychologically. A study conducted in 2015 by DCU in an Irish school found that 35.6% of multisport athletes are at risk of injury. Of those injured participants, 27.9% are at risk of sustaining another injury that school year, competing in a different sport. The Irish Sport Council have adopted Player Welfare initiatives in recent years, but for adolescents at grassroots, access to psychologists or these processes are limited and usually at the discretion of local volunteers. Incidents of anxiety or panic attacks, like the one experienced by the player on our school team, are becoming all too common and can become chronic if not dealt with. Munster’s Keith Earls candidly spoke about his mental health struggles in his new book. The accomplished winger experienced panic attacks from an

early age that got progressively worse through grassroots well into his professional rugby career. Attending therapy in 2013 helped him to resolve his issues. Although some pressure is self-inflicted, young athletes have no idea how to deal with it when the negative voice emerges. Coaches and parents play an equal role in preventing mental fatigue by recognising its triggers and putting a plan in place to address it. Irish sportspeople are no strangers to being hailed as all-round athletes. The upheaval of Irish talent now plotting their way in the AFL and AFLW is due to a culture of celebrating multisport competitiveness. Mayo's Sarah Rowe, for example, showed her capacity to play intercounty football and international soccer in the same calendar year before returning to her Collingwood squad. And don't forget Kieran Donaghy's desire to win national basketball titles while representing Kerry in the GAA. With such success comes a goal-orientated routine. Competing in many sports has incredible advantages, once rest and recovery are prioritised for our young athletes. Burnout results in many athletes becoming injured or, even worse, quitting their sport altogether. Gentle

If burnout is evident, such players should be allowed to step back with protocol for when they return to play, whether it’s injury-related or otherwise.

World stars Breen and Nagle top seeds for Historic Rally NEXT ROUND: The Killarney Celtic team who defeated Fenit in the Munster Junior Cup.

In-form Celtic in Junior Cup action

Killarney Celtic are in FAI Junior Cup action this weekend as they take on Waterford side Villa FC in Ozier Park. The Celts are in tremendous form locally and they will hoping to carry that momentum into this key fixture as they once again aim to go deep into Ireland’s top junior soccer competition. The defending Kerry champions defeated Kilcornan of Limerick in Round 3 to book their place in the last 64. As for their opponents, Villa FC, they beat fellow Waterford outfit Seaview Celtic by seven goals to nil in the previous round. The city club currently find themselves top of the Waterford Premier Division with a perfect record of seven wins from seven games. Villa are Waterford’s biggest club and are sure to provide a very stern test for the team from Derreen.

MUNSTER

Celtic progressed in the Munster Junior Cup last weekend with a 2-0 victory over

Fenit Samphires. Free-scoring striker Stephen McCarthy added to his tally for the season with a first-half goal and an OG in the second period confirmed the victory. The Hoops will now advance beyond Kerry to the 4th round open draw, alongside Listowel Celtic who hammered Ballyheigue Athletic 6-0 in the other Round 3 fixture. Meanwhile, in the Premier B, Celtic B suffered a 3-0 defeat to Rattoo Rovers and Ballyhar Dynamos lost 5-0 to Castlegregory Celtic. QPR had a good result in Division 1A as they got the better of Park on a 2-1 scoreline, and in 1B Killarney Athletic B defeated Windmill United 3-1. Down in Division 3B there was no joy for Mastergeeha as they fell to a 5-3 defeat to Blue Bulls FC.

World Rally Championship stars Craig Breen and Paul Nagle are the top seeds in a capacity field of 160 cars for Saturday’s Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally. They will drive a BMW M3 for Dutch motorsport team Mats Van De Brand on the six-stage event that gets underway just after 8am on Saturday morning. “I am really, really looking forward to it, especially going there with such an iconic car like a BMW M3,” said Breen. Nagle is a previous winner of the Rally of the Lakes, The Circuit of Kerry and the Kerry Winter Rally. Success on Saturday would mean he has won every Kerry rally. He and his Killarney co-driver Nagle are on a tight schedule this week. They are currently preparing for the 2022 World Rally Championship with M-Sport Ford and were in the South of France this week testing their new Ford Puma. They arrived back in Ireland on Thursday night, just in time for the pre-event procedures for the Historic Rally which start on Friday morning. Although they are top seeds, Breen and Nagle will start with Number 2 on the door as the Number 1 slot has been left blank in memory of two club stalwarts, Johnny Hickey and Mike Falvey, who passed away earlier this year. The battle for honours in the keenly contested modified section is likely to be an all-local affair.

MODIFIED RALLY

The top seed in this section is Killarney’s Colin O’Donoghue and his Glenflesk co-driver Kieran O’Donoghue. The defending modified champions made history in Belgium in September by winning the Escort Rally Special in Chimay. Rob Duggan and Ger Conway won the overall historic title in 2019 but are entered in the modified section on this occasion. Throughout various lockdowns, the Aghadoe man built a new Ford Escort Mk2. They gave it a shakedown on the Kerry Winter Rally earlier this month but withdrew after a few stages due to brake and exhaust issues.

BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP

The Killarney Historic Rally might be the biggest rally of its kind in Ireland but the biggest historic rally in Britain is also taking place this weekend. The third quarter was basket for basket with Carlow holding onto their lead with a good finish to the quarter still ahead 57-41.
