Killarney Celtic

FAI Junior Cup Semi-Final: Killarney Celtic 1 Sheriff 1 Sheriff go through AET on penalties Celtic and a huge supporting army drawn from all over Kerry and all sporting codes went through the full gamuit of emotions from euphoria to despair and all points in between in an immaculate Kilbrean Park last Saturday evening – no praise is sufficient to summarise the brilliant work both before and during the game by superb hosts Mastergeeha. Special thanks to Konrad Paprocki for his brilliant photography, John O’Mahony and Eamon Mulvihill for their hard work in preparing the match programme, Ramona Keogh for her facebook ‘Seat On The Bus’ campaign which has not only help publicise and promote the game but brought our large diaspora together with one Celtic voice, and all the huge army of volunteers and supporters who got behind the club for this great occasion. Celtic dominated early possession but couldn’t pierce a strong rearguard - a swirling breeze helped neither side. The excellent Padraig O’Connor couldn’t convert a difficult chance. and both nets remained unruffled by the half-time whistle. Stephen Murphy drilled a great freekick just barely over the Celtic crossbar, while captain fantastic John McDonagh hit an even better one but Lee Murphy made a full length dive to

tip it away. Paul Murphy tried a clever lob after a brilliant through ball but Roy was out fast enough to force the kick off target. Stephen Murphy drilled another bullet free kick but Roy got his full body behind it. The tempo increased in a sparkling second half with both sides going close. Goal chances were at a premium. Sheriff finished normal time with the upper hand but no goal. Extra-time. Sheriff still on top, but Celtic battled hard for every inch of ground. Early in the second half of extra-time, a Celtic clearance took a fluky deflkection off a defender and Thomas Dunne pounced like a hawk with a superb finish. A second yellow for Chris O’Leary, who was outstanding alongside McDonagh, Falvey, and the unanimous selection for man of the match Jamie Spillane, meant that an uphill climb now looked like a very sheer cliff. Then Celtic, with sheer heart and willpower as much as craft and skill, began to climb.... Into the final minute....no cracks but Celtic still pounding that defensive wall, Conor Randall snapped onto a loose ball....a clumsy challenge by a desperate keeper...penalty! Jamie Spillane stepped up...over 2000 spectators hardly dared to breathe....but Jamie was calmness personified as he slotted it home. Penalty shootout. Roy saved the first and Jamie scored again, but Sheriff keeper Lee Murphy read our kicks well and it is they who go through to the final. So close, so far away. So many heroes on one of the greatest nights ever in our history. Agonising at the finish, of course, it couldn’t be anything else in that moment. But heart-breaking? No. This isn’t the end of anything. This is only our first step at this level, not our last. We haven’t often tasted the air at this altitude, and we like it. We will come again. Comhgairdeas to the reigning champions and best wishes in the final, and mile buiochas to everyone who got behind us from far and near on this epic rollercoaster of a journey. Special thanks to Brian Spillane, Eoghan Donnellan, David Hayes, Stefan McMahon & all those great players who did us so proud. FAI Senior Cup Killarney Celtic’s exploits in the FAI Junior Cup have given us entry to the Senior Cup, and we will play Boyle Celtic at home in Celtic Park on the weekend of April 30th. Results U16 Kerry Cup: Listowel Celtic B 1 Killarney Celtic 6. Killarney’s Hoops were well on top here in Pat Kennedy Park. Evanm Lyne nailed a brace, with Darragh Lyne, Jared Barton, Ryan Kelliher, and Patrick Darcy all on target as well. U12 Premier: Killarney Athletic B 3 Killarney Celtic C 5. A great duel between two excellent sides, with Celtic’s fractionally better scoring power just giving them the edge. Man of the match Jake Downing bossed things all through and added a penalty for good measure, with Ciaran Boyne’s predatory instincts giving him two and Cormac Walsh and Cormac O’Donoghue both scoring as well. U11: Killarney
