NEWS

Editor’s View

10.11.17 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Build It & They Will Come…

THE 1989 movie classic Field of Dreams saw Kevin Costner’s character turn his cornfield into a baseball venue and the film engendered the idea of “build it and they will come” – and that is what Killarney has done throughout its history. As hopes of a €50 million cash bonanza for the town were effectively shot down following judges’ recommendation on a venue to host the Rugby World Cup in 2023, we say Killarney should continue to set its sights as high as is possible no matter what when it comes to attracting sporting and cultural events as well as industry. Pitching ourselves stratospherically in the past is what has brought the town to where it is today. Where would Killarney be without the foresight of such entrepreneurial visionaries as MD O’Shea and Maurice O’Donoghue? In the 1950s, jobs were few and far between in Killarney and emigration was rife. As is the case today, most local jobs were in tourism, which was not a year-round prospect for employment. In 1958, word went out around the town that a German industrialist, Hans Liebherr, was staying in the town’s Great Southern Hotel. It was reported that Mr Liebherr wanted to open a factory in an English-speaking base and planned to build a plant in Mallow, Co Cork. But movers and shakers in Killar-

As a town we must continue to set our sights as high as possible ney, including businessman Michael D (Mackey) O’Shea and the then-chairman of Killarney Urban Council, Teddy Clifford, saw the opportunity and they along with a team of delegates met Mr Liebherr for dinner in the hotel. Mackey O’Shea then took him to see land close to the lakeshore where he could build a factory. Mr O’Shea would later say: “Why would you bother going to Mallow? Sure you could build here and bring the factory to Killarney.” The rest is history and Liebherr Container Cranes is now a leading employer in the town. Also with its roots in the late 1950s, the brand-leading Gleneagle Group started with the country house hotel The Gleneagle in 1957 and in the decades that followed, numerous expansion programmes by Maurice and Margaret O’Donoghue led to a dramatic increase in both the hotel’s size and its facilities. The most significant and ambitious addition,

Ireland’s National Events Centre, or the INEC, opened in 2000. In recent months Killarney Advertiser has asked the question: Why shouldn’t Killarney become a centre for a financial hub or the location for a global conference and trade exhibition centre? Now we say: size doesn’t matter, no matter what the World Rugby tech report judges say. Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Paul O’Neill noted: “Killarney is like no other town of 14,000 and our experience, while maybe not comparable with Paris or Johannesburg, we undoubtedly have the skills and knowledge to match the other Irish destinations.” Patrick O’Donoghue, chairman of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, said: “Killarney is accustomed to punching above its weight, and anyone that has attended a large-scale sporting event, concert or conference here will testify to that. The atmosphere, safety and professionalism of everyone involved is always second to none.” We need to channel the spirit of the entrepreneurs who have gone before us. While we may not have been successful this time, let’s pitch for other world events. Main pic, Kevin Costner in the movie Field of Dreams and left, The Gleneagle in 1957 and as it is today; right, Liebherr today and, far right, the factory in the 1950s.

Branching Out In Killarney

EVERY cloud has a silver lining and this is literally the case in Killarney following the fallout of Hurricane Ophelia and Storm Brian. Volunteers are using the trees felled by the recent storms branch out to help people in need in the locality. The Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal volunteers, at the request of Killarney National Park management, have swung into action to cut up fallen trees for firing. The timber is for sale at the Killarney Men’s Shed and proceeds will go to the Killarney branch of the Society of St Vincent de Paul.

THERE has been a groundswell of support for increased safety measures on the Killarney Bypass Road and Lewis Road junction. Killarney Advertiser has campaigned throughout the year for the safety at the accident blackspot and a week into setting up a petition, the Mayor of the Killarney Municipal District Councillor Niall Kelleher has gathered close to 3,000 signatures. Supporters include Suzanne Mannix Dennehy, the sister of Annette Mannix, who tragically lost her life in an accident on the Killarney Bypass in May. Mayor Kelleher will personally deliver the petition to the office of the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, and to Transport Infrastructure Ireland next week.

You will also have the chance to sign the petition at Sunday’s Munster Club Football Championship semi-final, between Dr Crokes and Kilmurry-Ibrickane, at Lewis Road. Some 450 people signed a separate petition at Annette Mannix’s funeral last May seeking change at the junction. On foot of a campaign by Killarney Advertiser, several calls have been made at national level for action. “Road users, including motorists, cyclists and pedestrians, are living in fear anytime they have to access the busy junction,” said Mayor Kelleher. KILLARNEY NATIONAL PARK welcomed an influx of visitors from across Ireland to wage war on the rhododendron scourge this week. As Killarney Advertiser has highlighted in its campaign this year, invasive rhododendrons, whose unconstrained growth is a danger to flora and fauna, threaten the Park’s natural beauty and delicate ecosystems. November has seen the National Park teaming up with Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and Irish Men’s Shed Association and Haven Pharmacy to help protect a vital part of Ireland’s natural heritage. The initiative, which was spearheaded by Killarney pharmacist Finbarr Kennelly, saw 45 members of Men’s Sheds across Ireland get into action with local volunteers, including the Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal, from Sunday until Wednesday. Through the generosity of Killarney Chamber and hoteliers, all those attending were accommodated and fed for the duration of their stay in Killarney. Paul O’Neill, president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, said “It is easy to see Killarney as a successful tourism town, but at its heart are communities of people who work together tirelessly to protect and enhance the National Park.”

THE communities of Killarney and Kilcummin have been devastated by the tragic death of Anthony O’Sullivan, who passed away on Sunday in Sydney, Australia. A group of the popular young man’s friends came together to set up a Go Fund Me page to raise much-needed funds to bring Anthony home to rest and also to donate to the charity The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust. The Go Fund Me page went live on Tuesday evening and by yesterday evening the amount gathered had reached over €50,000. Anthony, who passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on Sunday night, is the son of Paddy and the late Sheila O’Sullivan from Ballinamangh in Kilcum-

min and one of seven brothers. “As we all know, Anthony was a great character and we would like to show our support to the O’Sullivan family at this very difficult time,” stated Anthony’s friends. Kilcummin GAA Club, with which Anthony was a former underage player, is among the many organisations and individuals to lead heartfelt tributes to the popular young man. “We extend our deepest condolences to his father Paddy and brothers Brendan, Patrick, Killian, Stephen, Darragh and Enda at this difficult time,” it stated. The Go Fund Me page, which was set up by Kilcummin senior player Daniel O’Leary, can be found at www.gofundme.com/anthony-skinner-o-sullivan

Town Talk

Calendar Fever Sweeps Killarney

OVER the past week, people from across the town, and everywhere from New Zealand to New York, have inundated us with requests for the Killarney Historical Calendar. At this time of year, gift ideas abound, but this luxury product from the KC Print Group has captured the imagination like no present before. This local calendar has created a buzz and has rapidly become a Christmas must-have. The clamour started on Friday when we gave you a sneak preview in these pages of the calendar and its contents and when we hosted Damien Switzer of the KC Print Group in our Chatroom to show off this blockbuster of nostalgia. The Chatroom video has had Facebook in a spin ever since, garnering over 10,000 views to date, numerous likes and shares, and countless comments. The Killarney Historical Calendar is full to the brim with over 300 images of a bygone Killarney and has given people a real sense of connection with their hometown. We also hit the streets to get the sentiment on the ground and met with the steady stream of

locals exiting shops with calendars firmly under their arms. The sight of people flicking through the pages in little huddles speaking of times past, with giggles of remembrance, was wonderful. One man told us how the calendar is already hanging in his hallway and is an instant conversation starter. Others, and not always the older generation, speak with a lump in their throats of how proud they are of their town and how the calendar is a great keepsake. “The plaudits must also go to the Casey family (KC Print and the Killarney Advertiser) and Historia Publishing for affording me the time to indulge my passion for Killarney,” said Damien. The calendars are for sale in Daly’s SuperValu, Park Road, Eason, Main Street, Quills, Market Cross, Reidy’s of Main Street, Casey’s, College Street, O’Connor’s Newsagents, Beech Road, and Mucros Craft Centre, Muckross House, and to accommodate our friends abroad we have set up an online shop on the Killarney Advertiser website www.killarneyadvertiser.ie Your home will feel incomplete without it.

Driving Back Hoteliers Ask: Through The Decades Rugby World Cup

Does Size Matter In Killarney?

PICTURED above are four founding members of Killarney and District Motor Club, Mike Buckley, Mike and Noreen Marshall and Fintan Foley. They were among the original 12 people that met in O’Shea’s Bar, Milltown, exactly 40 years ago today, on November 10, 1977. Other founding members were Pat Allman, Reidin Buckley, Richard Fitzgerald, Donie McCarthy, Des O’Neill, Ken O’Neill, John Brosnan (RIP) and Timmy Flynn (RIP). Members of the club will meet in the same venue this evening.

KILLARNEY’S hoteliers have expressed their annoyance at the recent report made by World Rugby’s Technical Review group, specifically in relation to the comments made about the town’s size and its inexperience at hosting largescale events. Speaking in reaction to the report, Patrick O’Donoghue, chairman of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, said: “While Killarney’s population is smaller than other proposed host cities, the town has a disproportionately high number of hotels and guesthouses. Also, contrary to the report, Killarney has hosted the Irish Open four times.” Killarney currently has in excess of 2,500 hotel rooms and has the highest concentration of four and five star hotels in Ireland. There are over 5,200 hotel rooms in Kerry, with many of these located in Killarney’s neighbouring towns of Tralee, Kenmare and Dingle. These figures do not take into account the num-

ber of guesthouses, B&Bs, hostels and self-catering accommodation in the county. The 2010 Irish Open welcomed an attendance of 85,179 over the four days while in 2011 the tally of attendees for the international gold tournament exceeded 86,500. While not an international event, the Kerry town also hosts the Munster Football Final on a regular basis with attendance figures, for the highly anticipated Cork and Kerry clashes, averaging just under 40,000 people. “Killarney is accustomed to punching above its weight, and anyone that has attended a large-scale sporting event, concert or conference here will testify to that. The atmosphere, safety and professionalism of everyone involved is always second to none,” added Mr O’Donoghue. Pictured: Patrick O’Donoghue.

News Briefs ... Tourism Chiefs Put Their Minister For Health To Open Deer Lodge

THE Minister for Health Simon Harris will cut the tape on Deer Lodge Mental Health Facility in Killarney on Monday. The Health Service Executive stated: “Cork Kerry Community Healthcare acknowledges the commitment and work of all those involved with Deer Lodge, which has resulted in a modern, state-of-the-art facility of which Kerry Mental Health Services is very proud.” The €13 million Deer Lodge Mental Health facility opened in Killarney in July when staff and residents of the former O’Connor Unit relocated to the building. Head of Mental Health Services Sinead Glennon said: “Thanks to the investment in Deer Lodge, we can now offer improved services and therapeutic intervention in rehabilitative and older persons’ mental health.”

Industry In The Spotlight THE great employment and training opportunities available in the tourism and hospitality sector in Kerry will be clearly outlined at a high-profile event in Killarney at the weekend. One of the key speakers at the Let’s Talk Tourism forum at The Brehon Hotel will be Paul O’Toole who is the head of Solas, the state organisation with responsibility for funding, planning and co-ordinating further education and training programmes in the country. His organisation has been tasked with building the identity and values of a world-class, integrated education and skills sector that is responsive to the needs of learners and the requirements of a changing economy. “We believe that by providing a further education and training sector that is tailored to the needs of learners, employers and communities, we can harness the individual’s skills, strengthen the economy and promote social togetherness,” said Mr O’Toole, a former director general of FÁS who also served as chief execu-

tive of Tourism Ireland and general manager of Bord Fáilte. Other key speakers at the forum will include Fáilte Ireland chief executive Paul Kelly, Mark Henry of Tourism Ireland, Fiona Monaghan, head of the Wild Atlantic Way project at Fáilte Ireland, Guinness Storehouse boss Paul Carty, Minister of State for Tourism Brendan Griffin and Kerry County Council CEO Moira Murrell. The forum will commence on Friday morning with an opening address from event chairperson Margaret Cahill. Participants will include John Brennan of the Park Hotel, Kenmare, Adrian Cummins of the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Helena Healy of B&B Ireland, travel writers Eoghan Corry and Pól Ó Conghaile, David McCarthy of AIB and Bernadette Enright of the Hospitality, Education and Training Centre. Friday night will involve a business networking dinner in The Malton Hotel and on Saturday forum delegates and their guests will enjoy a visit to the Skellig Coast and Valentia Island.

Seat At End Of Fossa Way KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is to provide a seat at the Fossa end of the Fossa Way. At the recent meeting of Killarney Municipal Area, Councillor Michael Gleeson asked the council to “give favourable consideration” to the provision of a seat, saying: “It would greatly enhance the overall enjoyment of this very special amenity for the many users of the splendid walkway-cum-cycleway.” The council has agreed to the request and a seat will be put in place in due course. “The seat will provide a welcome rest place for those who wish to relax and enjoy the great peace and beauty of the area,” said Cllr Gleeson.

At the launch of the National Tourism Forum/Let’s Talk Tourism Conference which takes place in The Brehon Hotel this weekend were from left, Joan McCarthy, Kerry County Council, Paul O’Neill, President, Killarney Chamber, Margaret Cahill, Chairperson, NTF, Emer Corridan, IHF, Sean Healy, AIB and Ciara O’Grady, NTF. Child’s Play In Firies

PLANNING permission is being sought for a playground in Firies Village on a site located between Firies National School and the community childcare facility across from St Gertrude’s Church. The site will be accessible via public footpath and roadway and from Firies National School which secured €50,000 Clar funding earlier this year towards a playground facility. Parking is available on the western side from the Marian Hall towards the national school. The playground’s location will be of great benefit to the adjoining national school and nearby childcare facility, housing estates and public in general, said Kerry County Council member Cllr Brendan Cronin.“This project and facility is of immense importance to Firies National School, nearby childcare facility, local residents and families in the village and broader parish and community,” said Cllr Cronin. “Similar to other communities, local funding will be needed for the development of this playground and it will be of paramount importance for all groups and associations along with the general public to support the Board of Management of Firies NS in the required fundraising campaign to bring the playground to completion. “There has been an amount of work done over the past months and it is important to recognize the input of the board of management of Firies NS, Fr Tadgh O Dochartaigh, PP, Vincent Foley Kerry County Council, St Brendan’s Trust and in particular Mr Willie Wixted whom i met on site in early May which initiated the possibility and availability of this site for a playground in Firies.”

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

‘Mirror On Male Culture Does Not Reflect Well’

WHAT have the director of the Gate Theatre, a Hollywood producer, Bono, the landlords, and the bankers – and here one is tempted to follow with a bad word that rhymes – in common? You’ll get no marks for guessing. They are all, or they mostly are, males wielding power and money. The spotlight is no longer on Eve handing the apple – it is Adam’s apple the shine is coming off. A global mirror on the bastions of male culture, male bands, male one-upman ship, male obsession with money, and male tribalism, is being held up mercilessly. And the reflection in this country is not good. Because we could throw in the mostly male GAA and the appalling behaviour by a club in the north, and we could also throw in the IRA and its attitude to women and the “bullying” behaviour that has seen young female councillors exit Sinn Fein. And include what’s emerging about the War of Independence and the sexual attacks on women, doubtless by men on the run. Only the Church has been lucky – but then that has been mined already. Nearly every scandal streaming out now is about unacceptable behaviour on the part of the gender who held absolute

sway around the boardrooms, who set the agendas and who led the crazy unrestrained capitalist world that has us in the mess we are. Not just the unfettered business world; the arts world is rife with it, we are told. This is about the last place you’d expect to find such narrow “Mad Men” behaviour. I am waiting for the exposé on the media. There was plenty of “male camaraderie” and outrageous remarks by some in that arena as well. And the politicians (we have one of the lowest female participations in the western world) seem strangely unscathed – so far! And in this town, where women have built the businesses, we see the male-only statues (apart from the Spéir Bhean and the Blessed Virgin – both super-terrestrial!), the male-only portraits hung in hotel conference rooms, the male-only roads and roundabouts! It has long been my belief the central problem with Ireland is its huge lack of a meritocracy. Advancement is not by merit but by something else. I have long called it “who’reatocracy”. Who you rubbed shoulders with, who you knew, who your father was, what political party you followed, that’s really what advanced you. That went for male or female, private or public sectors.

Grave Matters IT IS the month of the dead. November. In some parts of Europe there is a tradition of bringing chrysanthemums to graves of loved ones. This is because the yellow and purple and white flowers are the showiest flowers in the place this time. So don’t ever give a chrysanthemum to a French person! Here we have the long-awaited news the town is to get a new graveyard after a long search in

which even the Pretty Polly factory was considered. For decades we had motions before the old town council and appeals to the NPWS for land in Muckross. Brendan Cronin, the councillor and mayor of Killarney when the planning for Knockeenduff was voted on, makes a very interesting point. The Killarney Municipal Council has managed to do what the old town council could not!

Well glad to see at last that old nonsense seems to be crashing down and almost 100 years after 1922, when women were “airbrushed out” – it is not before time. But my big problem with some of the kiss-and-tell stories now is they border on the farcical. A colourful remark passed in a pub that went unanswered 30 years later is trotted out on RTE. The nation swoons. Like Edwardian ladies whose corsets are too tight. If women’s sensibilities are that delicate then maybe it’s time we all went back to the snug. Bring back the snug, is what I say. There is ordinary banter and fun between the sexes. Take that too far and we’ll all be resorting to arranged marriages. We’ll have separate bus seats, separate schools, separate drinking dens. And precious little fun. There’s another side which I for one cannot understand too: why did no one male or female speak out at the more outrageous behaviour. A lot of men were very well brought up. Were they all too set on their own self-advancement? And why did they suffer such indignity knowing that others too, maybe their daughters or sisters, were in line for the same treatment when they did not complain? Remember this is different to domestic

abuse. This is the workplace where people have acknowledged rights and male colleagues and 30 years ago there were strong trade unions in the private sector. I have previously highlighted in this column, at some cost to myself, the unacceptable humiliation of women in some of our courts – the remarks passed, the suited male laughter at their expense. I have done it in other forums. And I will continue to do it. But this is not the same thing as a remark passed in a pub. Sixty years ago, Maureen O’Hara spoke out about Hollywood at great risk to herself. And she survived. There is another serious side before it all turns into a witch hunt (maybe the word is warlock hunt, warlock being a male witch) and it is serious. We lose perspective when we take things out of context. A remark 20 or even 10 years ago is not the same as one made today. There was a different common culture, it was a different time. Some men will be terribly troubled, perhaps at a vulnerable stage in their lives now. I think women should award a general amnesty and act as they long have towards “dirty” talk from men with a mixture of pity, derision and laughter. And walk away.

Entertainment All The Way From Glenflesk

WELL, the singing and banter could be heard all the way down High Street when we hosted two famous Glenflesk people, Derry Healy and Danielle Favier, in our Chatroom. Danielle spoke of her upcoming wedding and reflected on the hugely successful Guinness World Record welly run she spearheaded for Glenflesk GAA Club three years ago. Danielle, who is a member of Killarney Musical Society and works with Fáilte Ireland, also reveals what she loves

most about Glenflesk. Derry, chairman of Glenflesk GAA Club, is a well-known musician and had a star turn as Michael Collins in the hugely successful 1916 drama Patrick. Tune in to see what musician he would most like to meet and what song he would choose to sing on the X Factor. Be sure to check out The Chatroom, Killarney’s answer to The Late Late Show, at 9pm this evening on our website killarneyadvertiser.ie and Facebook page when the duo strut their stuff.

Toes Tap For A Good Cause DANCERS swung into action in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMDA) in a charity céilí that generated an impressive €600. The event was hosted at An Riocht, Castleisland, by TJ Nelligan in September with the help of Liz Kelleher of Kilgarvan whose brother died of motor neurone disease. Elizabetg and Peggy Kelleher presented the proceeds to Christy Lehane, Killarney, of the Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Disease and the IMDA in the Heights Hotel Killarney. Paying tribute to TJ, the dancers and all who supported the event, Liz said: “There are no words to express how much it meant to see everybody there and we hope they all enjoyed the day and a huge thank you

to everybody that helped out, including those that helped with the tea and made sure everyone got fed,” she said. “Most of all, a huge thank you to Ui Bhriain, John and Martina, who played exceptional music and created a fantastic atmosphere.” Christy Lehane said the funds will help provide specialist equipment and access to a motor neurone disease nurse. “This plays a vital role in improving quality of life, enabling people to live as active independent citizens within their community and to remain at home with their families for as long as possible,” said Christy. There are currently over 360 people living with MND in Ireland 12 of which are from Kerry.

Celtic’s Search For Santa IT STARTED out as a search for Santa and his elf and Killarney Celtic’s campaign in the leadup to the club’s Soccertots’ Christmas party turned into something of a Trump V Clinton-style battle. Ramona Keogh of the club, who came up with the idea, said: “Once the update went online it took off like wildfire.” Lead contenders included Peter McCarthy, senior player, for Santa and Wayne Sparling, for an elf. “Peter McCarthy’s campaign manager Danny McClure was drumming up huge support from Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre and then bang.....in went Karl McMahon for Santa and then the campaign really took off,” said Ramona. “Out of the blue came our new signing Mark Beckett with huge online support from his friends in Fermanagh and then it started trending. Friends of Mark were even messaging to see what they could do to get him to win this even a statement to say it was a lifelong dream of his to be an elf. “Cathal O’Shea, another one of our senior players, is definitely looming behind Mark Beckett. “At this stage I was thinking about throwing a Mrs Claus and Rudolph in the mix but I said I would watch what was happening and play by ear.” The phone has been just hopping with updates and in the last 24 hours, added Ramona. “It looks like this is definitely going to be an annual campaign. Stay tuned for the final reveal.”

Killarney Honours Loreto Missionary With Humanitarian Award

Words: Eve Kelliher

THE 2017 Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award was presented to Sr Orla Treacy of the Loreto order by the Mayor of Killarney Cllr Niall Kelleher at a ceremony in Killarney on Saturday evening. This is the tenth year of this award, established to commemorate the humanitarian work of Killarney native Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, in Nazi-occupied Rome during World War Two. Sr Orla is the principal of a Loreto education and medical mission in Rumbek, South Sudan. In 2004, the Loreto Sisters in Ireland and worldwide started a new movement called “Courage to Move”. In the face of abject poverty, civil war and the absolute oppression of women

and in particular young girls, they succeeded in establishing schools and a basic medical centre in the area of Rumbek in central South Sudan. In 2011, South Sudan gained independence and it was hoped that matters would improve, Sr Orla told the large audience in Killarney. “Following a brief period of relative peace, conditions in South Sudan have returned to those applying pre-Independence and the Loreto Sisters continue to struggle to provide education and minimal medical care for those in their care,” said the award winner. She went on to describe the terrible circumstances facing young girls in South Sudan, with forced marriages while still

in their teens, high mortality in childbirth and almost non-existent education, even at primary level.” The chair of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society Jerry O’Grady reminded the audience of the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Presenting the humanitarian award to Sr Orla, Killarney Mayor Cllr Niall Kelleher spoke of the uncertain future for South Sudan and appealed to all to support the work of the Loreto Sisters there.

THE Killarney and District Motor Club held the official launch of the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally on Friday night last in Scotts Hotel, Killarney. There were some beautiful rally cars on display and a large crowd in attendance. Officials, organisers and sponsors were joined by guest speakers such as TD Michael Healy-Rae and WRC co-driver Paul Nagle. MC Mike Marshall introduced Paul Sherry of Killarney’s Chamber of Tourism & Commerce who spoke of how important the rally is to Killarney town. Deputy Healy-Rae praised the commitment of the voluntary club members. Killarney and District Motor Club announced details of this year’s Killarney Historic Stages Rally, Ireland’s only event to cater solely for historic rally cars and night-stage rallying, which will run on Saturday, December 2nd. The rally will count as the first round of the 2018 Irish Tarmac Historic Rally Championship; final round of the 2017 Southern Four Rally Championship; and final round of The 2017 HRCR - Stage Masters Challenge. Event clerk of the course Kevin Flannery and his Killarney and District Motor Club team have built this year’s rally around the competitor. “We recognise the competitors attraction to the event and the uniqueness that the Killarney Historic Rally holds worldwide, offering the competitor 110km of competitive stages, centralised service area at Liebherr Container Cranes, Killarney, and the popular feature of the final stage to be run in the

darkness,” said Kevin. The event provides a welcome end-of-season boost to Ireland’s tourism capital and is worth millions to the local economy. The Gleneagle Hotel, involved in the rally since 1979, will once again serve as rally headquarters. There will also be extensive television coverage of this year’s event, with a onehour production by Mick Bracken of on the Limit Sports, to be televised on RTÉ, TG4, Setanta Sports, Motors TV and SkySports throughout the Christmas period. The rally starts on the Friday evening with a ceremonial start on Main Street, Killarney, at 7pm. The real action gets underway on Saturday morning with the iconic Moll’s Gap stage. Top local historic competitors include Pat Looney from Kilcummin who will debut his newly built Bda-powered Ford Escort Mk1. Rathmore’s Mark Falvey returns to the stages after a brief layoff and is sure to be well in contention. Todd Falvey will be out in his beautifully prepared Porsche 911. Southern 4 Championship winner Donal O’Connor from Rathmore will also be pushing hard for top local honours. Killarney’s Aidan Kennedy and Glenbeigh’s Jack O’Shea also head the Mini Cooper lineup. Leading local crews in the modified category include last year’s winner Rob Duggan, Charlie Hickey, Kevin O’Donoghue, Tadhg O’Sullivan, Noel O’Sullivan, Vincent O’Shea and John Hickey who will all field Ford Escorts.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS TO PERSONAL INJURY ASSESSMENT BOARD All personal injuries claims lodged in Ireland must first be lodged with the Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB). This applies to all personal injury cases save and except medical negligence cases. In the event of an accident taking place wherein you have sustained an injury by way of a slip or fall, road traffic accident or some other incident arising from which you have sustained injuries which is not your fault, you are entitled to lodge a claim for a personal injuries compensation it is important. It is important to note that it is incumbent upon all claimants to notify the person or persons to whom they are holding responsible as soon as possible following the incident. There is an obligation to notify the person or persons responsible (the Respondents) as quickly as possible but within two months in writing of the incident giving rise to the claim but it is not fatal to the claim if this is not done but most certainly all claims for personal injuries must be lodged and appropriately commenced within two years of the date of the accident in default of which the claim will be statute barred. The Statute of Limitations being the two year period is the time frame within which you must commence your claim. After that time where the claim is statute barred, your claim will fail. It is important that you establish and nominate as respondents all and any persons who may bear responsibility for your injuries and these should be nominated in the application to

the PIAB. Once you lodge your claim with PIAB, PIAB then notifies the respondent and the claim is underway. The application to PIAB is by way of an application form together with a medical report and the appropriate fee. Thereafter the PIAB will write to the Respondent(s) inviting them to agree to the PIAB assessing the matter and subject to their agreement the PIAB will then proceed to assess the claim on the basis of medical evidence and evidence in support of an application for out of pocket expenses to include loss of earnings etc. Once the PIAB make a determination, that determination is reduced to writing and furnished to the applicant and the respondent(s) and each party has a short period of time to accept or reject the determination. If both parties accept the determination, the Payment Order is issued and that concludes matters. However, if the matter is not accepted by both parties, an Authorisation to issue proceedings then issues. Most importantly to note is that in the event that you have sustained an injury and you are seeking compensation, you should ensure to act quickly and prosecute your claim promptly. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such, In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Paradise Papers

Super-Rich Whose Financial Details Have Been Leaked

WHEN the Panama Papers were released in 2016, they threw a searing spotlight on the tax affairs of the rich and powerful. Now, a year and a half later, the so-called Paradise Papers have yet again brought the matter under global scrutiny – featuring high-profile names from much closer to home. The disclosure of 13.4million previously-secret documents ties major companies and political figures to secretive overseas arrangements. The majority of the leaked Paradise Papers come from Appleby, which specialises in offshore accounts. U2 frontman Bono is alleged to have used a company based in Malta, a low tax jurisdiction, to pay for a share in a shopping centre based in Lithuania. The leaked papers reportedly reveal that Bono, under his real name Paul Hewson, was an investor in the Maltese company Nude Estates, which bought the shopping centre. The singer said: “I’ve been assured by those running the company that it is fully tax compliant, but if that is not the case I want to know as much as the tax office does, and so I also welcome the audit they have said they will undertake.” Three stars of the sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys allegedly put more than £2 million into companies in Mauritius as part of a tax avoidance scheme. Patrick Houlihan, Martin Delany and Fiona O’Carroll

took funds received from the production company owned by creator and star of the show, Brendan O’Carroll, and transferred them overseas, the BBC reported. Mr O’Carroll told the broadcaster neither he nor his companies had been involved in a tax avoidance scheme or structure. The Duchy of Lancaster, the private estate of Queen Elizabeth, was found to have millions of pounds invested in offshore arrangements. Around £10million from the Queen’s private fund was paid into funds in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda between 2004 and 2005, according to reports. A spokesman for the estate said all investments were “fully audited and legitimate”. Tax avoidance involves companies and people using legal ways and following the rules to reduce their tax bill. In contrast, tax evasion is an offence and involves illegal ways of paying less tax than required.

Trump Corner

Brazilian Grand Prix

Hailed As Hero For Giving Trump The Middle Finger HER cheeky hand gesture ensured Juli Briskman was a cheerleader for free speech this week. But surely her firing as a result of Briskman’s off-the-cuff decision to give the US President the middle finger is troubling in the so-called Free World? Either way, she has been hailed as a hero by many and the 50-year-old found flowers on her doorstep on Monday night. “Juli: I don’t know you and yet I am so proud of you,” an accompanying note said. “You’re my hero. Truly. Thank you for standing up to this admin. We need more like you. Continue to resist. We’re with you all the way. Sally M.” In the past week, she has received media calls from across the globe as well as hate mail. One person told her: “I hope you get used to saying, ‘Do you want fries with that?’” Just to recap on the backstory: When Donald Trump departed the Trump National Golf Club in

Never fails to entertain

Sterling, northern Virginia, after a round of golf on October 28, his motorcade overtook cyclist Briskman, who responded by raising the middle finger of her left hand. The fleet of vehicles swept on but as it slowed for a red light, the cyclist caught up and flipped the bird a second time. A photo of her act of defiance took off on social media. The Washington Post called it “the middle-finger salute seen around the world”. The late-night TV host Stephen Colbert said: “No one has summed up the mood of the country better … Long may she wave.” Briskman, told her bosses at Akima, a government contracting firm in Herndon, Virginia. The marketing executive was promptly fired for violating the “code of conduct policy” – even though she was off duty at the time. The story generated worldwide headlines again – and an outpouring of sympathy for Briskman, who clearly struck a chord. “I think the point is this resonates because millions of people feel the way that I do,” she told the Guardian.

THE F1 driver’s and constructor’s championship already wrapped, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes would be forgiven for heading to this weekend’s grand prix at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Interlagos, Brazil in a party mood. However, last year’s winner, Hamilton has warned his F1 rivals that he’s in no mood to wind down though, despite his unassailable advantage and Paradise Papers probe. Hamilton clearly wants to increase his points haul at the expense of championship runner-up Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel who still needs to defend his runner-up spot from Hamilton’s teammate, Valtteri Bottas. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen will have a different view on this and will be all out to increase his tally,

laying down the gauntlet to championship veterans Hamilton and Vettel in preparation for the 2018 title. Teammate Danny Ricciardo, with only one race win to his credit this season, will want to better his teammate on races wins even though he is ahead in the championship. From lights out on Sunday we will be guaranteed a thrilling race. This circuit has been home to some of the most thrilling battles in F1 history and with the championship wrapped up, we could see four cars into turn one all fighting for race glory. A reputation for unpredictable weather will add further spice to an already thrilling circuit. Just look back on Max Verstappen’s epic “save of the century” in last year’s race. Wow. Central Bank Forces BOI To Compensate Extra 6,000 Tracker Customers

Google Pairs With Volkswagen QUANTUM computing could come to cars as tech meets industry. We have seen the auto giants and the tech industries fall over themselves to create alliances in recent years. Google and Volkswagen have come together to investigate ways of using the surge in processing speed from quantum computers to help with traffic flows and autonomous driving. While quantum computing is still

in its infancy, it employs some of the less intuitive processes of quantum physics to accelerate computer calculations to speeds far faster than conventional technology. Volkswagen’s IT department wants to use the extra processing speed to develop new structures for high-performance battery materials, artificial intelligence and machine learning and traffic flows for self-driving cars.

THE Central Bank has forced Bank of Ireland to include an additional 6,000 customers in its tracker mortgage compensation scheme, reports the Irish Times. The extra customers brings the total number due for compensation from the bank to 10,300, by far the most identified by

any lender under review. The number of customers impacted by the scandal, which saw thousands of tracker mortgage holders wrongly switched to costlier variable rate contracts, is expected to reach 30,000 once the Central Bank’s investigation is complete.

Nutella Fans Go Nuts After Recipe Change NUMEROUS Nutella-lovers took to social media to express their dismay that the recipe of the chocolate spread had been altered this week. Nutella has confirmed that it has changed the recipe of its chocolate and hazelnut spread - sparking a huge back-

lash among fans of the brand. The maker of the spread, Ferrero, acknowledged it was adjusting its formula following a report by a German consumer group. Yet the consumer association noted that the colour of the spread had been made lighter due to the recipe change.

Video Of Texas Church Shooting Said ‘Latte Levy’ Could Be On The Way To Show Methodical Killing Of Victims Opinion Words: Eve Kelliher

IT’S become the default accessory of choice for us latte lovers everywhere but the disposable takeaway coffee container could be on its way out. It is reported that a charge of up to 15c could be levied on disposable coffee cups in a bid to tackle waste. According to the Irish Independent, around two million takeaway cups are sent to landfill every day. While I love my daily latte, the sight of these disposable cups overflowing in bins across the town and even strewn on walkways does has to give us pause for thought. Minister for the

Environment Denis Naughten wants to encourage customers to bring their own reusable mugs for their latte on the go – which I have to say, seems fair enough. It is understood talks have already taken place with major companies including Insomnia and Supermac’s. Oisin Coughlan, director of Friends of the Earth, said: “The plastic bag levy is something we are all very proud of now, it changed behaviour over night. “So the idea of a levy on disposable cups is worthwhile, don’t forget they are not paper, they have plastic in them.”

People In England Happier Since The Brexit Vote

PEOPLE in England are happier than they were at the time of the Brexit vote, figures have revealed. Contentment among the population in England has increased to record levels, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Its personal wellbeing survey revealed that people

in England are a less gloomier bunch than they were at the time of the EU referendum last year. Happiness has increased between June 2016 and June 2017, the ONS said. While happiness in England increased, the mood in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland was unchanged since the Brexit vote.

THE Texas church shooting was captured on a video that shows the gunman methodically shooting his victims in the head, including small children, it was reported on Wednesday. The seven-minute video clip described to the New York Times by an unnamed law enforcement official echoes interviews with survivors who described the shooter going aisle by aisle and firing at close range. often recorded its services and posted them online. The attack during a service last Sunday killed 25 people, as well as an unborn child, and wounded 20. The shooter, 26-year-old Devin Kelley, was wounded by two shots from a civilian as he left the church. The civilian and another man chased Kelley’s SUV in another car. After several miles, Kelley’s car crashed and he was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police said they recovered two handguns belonging to him in addition to a rifle.

Commuters The Collateral Damage In Rail Strikes A LETTER published in the Irish Times this week said it all: “As the rail strike escalates with no sign of resolution, is there any truth in the rumour that North Korea is considering sending senior officials here to assist our Minister for Transport Shane Ross to negotiate a settlement?” As trains sat idle on Tuesday with yet more strikes on the way, we have to ask: Is it right that the country is brought to a standstill by rail unions? Employees who have to stay at home from work and children and collegegoers whose timetables are thrown into disarray as a result of the industrial action are the collateral damage. It is time to go to the Labour Court. Why should passengers be left to face chaos because no resolution is in sight? The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has urged all

sides in the rail dispute to engage with the Workplace Relations Commission or the Labour Court to try to bring an end to the ongoing strike action. But with more than 150,000 people forced to make alternative travel arrangements this week, there was no sign of any breakthrough. Tuesday’s stoppage is the second of five scheduled by unions in pursuit of a no-strings attached pay rise of 3.75% a year. Iarnród Éireann insists the union claim would cost €43 million over three years and push the already vulnerable company into insolvency. SIPTU representatives have called on Iarnród Éireann management to desist from sending letters to workers which could be perceived as threatening their livelihoods. The third strike day is scheduled for November 14.

The proposal was to be discussed with the National Roads Authority (NRA) and it was envisaged, subject to agreement/planning that the HSE would donate the lands free of charge and the NRA would construct and pay for the new roundabout and connecting roads infrastructure. I REFER to the on-going public concern in relation to the number of accidents at the junction of where Upper Lewis Road meets the Killarney Bypass Road. Around 2006/2007 when the closure of St Finan’s Hospital, Killarney, was being actively proposed, senior HSE officials met with the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association in relation to plans for the closure of St Finan’s Hospital and the disposal of HSE land banks on both sides of the Killarney Bypass. The plans included the construction of a new roundabout approximately 250 metres on the western side of the present Upper Lewis Road/Killarney Bypass junction with connecting roads. On the southern side of the Killarney Bypass, a new slip road was proposed on HSE lands running parallel to the present bypass connecting Upper Lew-

However, now that property prices are recovering and St Finan’s Hospital is finally closed it may well be time to return to the 2006/2007 plans and finally build the new roundabout and connect-

ing roads, thereby closing the current junction of Upper Lewis Road with the Killarney Bypass for good and preparing the HSE land banks on both side of the bypass for sale and redevelopment. Cormac Williams, Killarney, PRO, Psychiatric Nurses’ Association, Kerry

The Bookworm

Reviewed: Origin by Dan Brown THE spellbinding new novel from the author of The Da Vinci Code, Origin sees Robert Langdon, Harvard professor of symbology and religious iconology, arrive at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao to attend the unveiling of a discovery that “will change the face of science forever”. The evening’s host is his friend and former student, Edmond Kirsch, a 40-year-old tech magnate whose dazzling inventions and audacious predictions have made him a controversial figure around the world. This evening is to be no exception:

On The Box

he claims he will reveal an astonishing scientific breakthrough to challenge the fundamentals of human existence. But Langdon and several hundred other guests are left reeling when the meticulously orchestrated evening is blown apart before Kirsch’s precious discovery can be revealed. With his life under threat, Langdon is forced into a desperate bid to escape, along with the museum’s director, Ambra Vidal. Together they flee to Barcelona on a perilous quest to locate a cryptic password that will unlock Kirsch’s secret.

World Cup Qualifier RTÉ Two

Nov 11th, 19:25 Denmark v Republic of Ireland (Kick-off 7.45pm). Darragh Maloney is joined by Damien Duff, Eamon Dunphy and Liam Brady to present coverage of the World Cup play-off first leg at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. Denmark finished second behind Poland in their qualifying group, while the Republic sealed their place in this match with a dramatic win in Cardiff against Wales in their final match. The return leg takes place in Dublin on Tuesday and Martin O’Neill’s men will be looking to extend an impressive record against the Danes, having not lost to them since 1984. With commentary by George Hamilton and Jim Beglin.

(2005, Fantasy) A Victorian widower struggles to control his seven unruly children, who have already driven a series of childminders to distraction. But a strange-looking nanny with a few tricks up her sleeve soon gets the youngsters into line, leaving their weary father to concentrate on finding a new wife. Period fantasy adventure, starring Emma Thompson, Colin Firth and Kelly Macdonald. Includes lotto.

Given the plethora of true crime documentaries and murder mysteries, it’s rare that a TV show or film tries to break the mould by doing something different. The Sinner is not a whodunit; it’s a why’d-she-do-it. It’s such a clever concept it leaves you asking why, too: Why hasn’t this been done more often? In the TV mini-series, Jessica Biel, who has been earning magnificent reviews for her performance, plays a young mother who, when overcome by an in-

explicable fit of rage, commits a startling act of violence. The event launches an inverted and utterly surprising crime thriller whose driving force is not the “who” or the “what” -- but the “why” -- as an investigator (Bill Pullman) finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman’s buried motive. Together they travel a harrowing journey into the depths of her psyche and the violent secrets hidden in her past.

Five Ways To Get Your Home Ready For Winter NOW is the perfect time to prepare your home for the winter. Below are our top tips to protect your premises over the coming months and ensure you and yours are comfortable, cosy and safe.

ROOF CHECK

Once the leaves have fallen off the trees you may find that your roof and gutters are clogged with foliage and other debris – particularly after the recent storms. Cleaning your gutters will reduce the chances of them overflowing. Similarly, as the temperature reduces, the overflowing gutters may freeze over and cause further damage.

INSULATE YOUR HOME

One of the best ways to make your home more energy efficient is ensuring that it is insulated correctly. If you have an attic this should be your first area to insulate, as there

is a lot of heat loss through roofs. You should also check your windows and doors to make sure they are airtight.

CHECK YOUR HEATING

One of the most important things to do is to check your heating system to ensure everything is in order. Get your boiler serviced and bleed your radiators as they may have air trapped inside which can affect their efficiency. This will not only save energy but could reduce your electricity bill.

CLEAN SWEEP

As the fireplace was probably dormant for the past few months, it may be a good idea to have a chimney sweep take a look at it, before you light the fire on a cold winter’s night. This will prevent any damage

to your fireplace and possibly your home, should the chimney be dirty or clogged.

COVER YOURSELF

Ensure you have the adequate level of cover in place before it’s too late. Insurance companies have a range of home insurance policies in place.

Essential Tips For Heating Efficiency THE Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) says your objective when it comes to home heating is to learn how to make your home comfortable with the minimum amount of heat, by using the heating systems and the controls that you have. Experiment with the following tips and mix and match to see what works for you. Switch the heating system on later in the morning and off earlier in the evening. The best way to find the right balance for your house is to experiment a little, first of all try turning on the central heating 30 minutes before you get up and off 1 hour earlier in the evening. Turn the heating in living areas down to 20°C –

this could save you 10% off your heating bill. The temperature in hallways and bedrooms should be cooler – ideally 15-18°C. Use temperature cards (available from SEAI) in a number of rooms, to prevent overheating and familiarise yourself with what different temperatures feel like. If you have a thermostat on your central-heating boiler, experiment to get the lowest setting (some systems may require a plumber). You can reduce it in mild weather, but don’t go below 60°C. Typically, the optimum setting is between 70°C and 80°C (i.e. adjust the dial between ‘min’ max’ on gas boilers) — but it really pays to experiment. Make a note of the settings you try, and the results you obtain to control the heat output

in response to the weather and indoor temperatures. Use Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) to adjust heat output from radiators when in rooms in response to your heating needs. Turn off your heating at night when you’re in bed and likewise when you’re not there, or if you’re going to be away for a few days. Open the curtains and blinds in rooms facing south during the day to let in the heat of the sun. Use conservatories during sunny winter days to heat the house by opening the doors from them into the house while it’s sunny, but by closing them when it’s overcast and dark outside. Effective use of windows provides sufficient ventilation without overcooling rooms. Don’t leave external doors and windows open unnecessarily. Use internal doors to maintain heating zones and distribution of heat throughout the main spaces. Close doors to separate heated from unheated areas of your home, and minimise the heated area. Turn off radiators in rooms which are not used very often.

Wedding of the Week

One Wedding Leads To Another For Mary & Michael THEY say one wedding leads to another and that was certainly the case for Mary Griffin and Michael O’Donoghue. Fossa native Mary and Michael, from Coolaclarig, Listowel, first met at Mary’s sister Jacqui’s wedding to Daniel Allen. At the time, Mary was living in Saudi Arabia and Michael popped the question in Bahrain during one of his visits to see her. However, all roads led to Killarney for her own nuptials when she and Michael exchanged vows in a civil ceremony at The Dromhall Hotel by registrar Helen O’Sullivan. Jacqui and Daniel Allen took on key roles also on the big day as bridesmaid and groomsman respectively. Also helping them lead the celebrations were Mary’s parents, Mary and Michael Griffin, Michael’s parents Mary and Michael O’Donoghue, ad Mary’s grandmother Chrissie O’Connor. Completing the bridesmaid line-up were Mary’s other sister Geraldine King along with Michael’s daughter Lauren O’Donoghue. Michael’s friend Darren Challoner was best man while his brother James O’Donoghue was a groomsman. “Our wedding day was amazing, the hotel went out of their way to make it exceptional,” said Mary. “Michael Talbot and Ciara O’Callaghan of The Dromhall were wonderful and helped to co-ordinate everything on the day.” Mary works for an Irish-owned construction company in London, Pod-Trak Ltd, as an office manager and PA to the managing director and Michael is an area sales manager in London for Scania (Great Britain) Limited. “Hence we had a Scania lorry outside the venue on our big day,” said Mary. The newlyweds currently reside in Windsor in London but are planning to relocate in the future to Coolkeragh, Listowel.

Using a Life Assurance Savings Plan to fund for Gift Tax

Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Qualified Financial Adviser, Philip Sicat, Premier Financial Services, discusses how you can fund for Gift Tax through a Savings Policy.

Philip Sicat

Relief is given in Section 73 of Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) Consolidation Act 2003 to allow people to plan for the payment of gift tax (Section 73) in a tax efficient way. If a life assurance savings plan is put in place to provide for the ‘relevant’ tax, Revenue will not charge Capital Acquisitions Tax on the plan proceeds if the money is actually used to pay gift tax. What is the benefit of you taking out a Section 73 savings plan? The benefit of using a ‘qualifying’ life assurance savings plan to fund for the payment of gift tax is that, as long as certain conditions are met, the proceeds of the plan when used to pay your clients beneficiaries gift tax bill, will not increase their gift tax liability. Are there certain restrictions to these plans? There are some revenue restrictions and requirements. If these rules are not satisfied for any reason, the plan will lose its exemption from gift tax and could actually increase the beneficiaries’ liability. CONDITIONS

* The plan must be expressly effected under the provisions of Section 73; normally the plan is endorsed to this effect when it is issued.

* To qualify for Section 73 relief the person who owns the plan must also pay the premium. * A joint-life plan can only be taken out by a married couple or registered civil partners. * You must continue to make regular premium payments for at least eight years.

* If you stop paying regular premiums, even after the eightyear period, you cannot restart. * Your premium cannot increase or reduce by more than 50% in any continuous eight-year period unless as a result of a plan review by the life company. * Once regular premiums have been paid for at least 8 years, any encashment from the plan after the plan has been in force for 8 years will be exempt from gift tax when used to pay gift tax within one year of making the encashment.

F1 World Champion Avoids Tax on Private Jet LEWIS HAMILTON is one of the many high-profile names that have surfaced from the Paradise Papers leak. The Formula One world champion managed to avoid paying European taxes on his private jet by using a controversial scheme that is now to be investigated by Britain’s tax authorities. A scheme used by Hamilton, already one of the world’s richest sports stars whose personal fortune is estimated at €240 million, to dodge paying Eu-

ropean taxes on his private jet is to be investigated by HM Revenue and Customs. Legitimate tax avoidance schemes are not illegal and there is no suggestion Hamilton was directly involved in creating the scheme operated from the British-owned Isle of Man to finance the purchase of his €18 million Bombardier jet from Canada in 2013. Accountancy firm EY and Appleby, the law firm at the centre of the Paradise Papers leak, helped the British racing driver and other clients

establish artificial leasing businesses through which they rented their own jets from themselves under a scheme approved by the Isle of Man government. The sportsman appears to have used shell companies in the British Virgin Island, the Isle of Man and Guernsey to avoid the entire €3.6 million owed when he imported the red-coloured jet into England. Similarly, he set up another Isle of Man-based company to purchase a seven-figure motorhome, again paying no VAT.

For what it meant to lose you Ed Only those who love you know.

God saw you getting tired, A cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you, And whispered “Come To Me”.

Remembering you is easy, I do it every day. It’s the heartache of losing you That will never go away.

Garden Magic In Praise of Cyclamen SOME months ago I advised against the planting of Cyclamen, but you can definitely start planting them now. There are many varieties of Cyclamen, but the most common ones are the miniature ones which are widely available in every shop and garden centre from September onwards. These do not do well in warmth, sun or high humidity, which is why I cautioned you to wait! The word Cyclamen comes from the ancient Greek word for circle, and its current name is actually Medieval Latin. They are known as “sowbread” or “swinebread”, as apparently pigs love them. I always thought this was an old wives tale until I met someone from Holland recently, who said they were called Varkensbrood (pig’s bread) in Holland also. In fact, throughout the world, as far away as Japan, the common name for cyclamen is some derivative of pigs and food! There are two varieties which I think are a must have for anyone who has even a small patch of shady garden: C. coum, and C. hederifolium. They will really grow anywhere, but under trees is best, as all cyclamen are woodland plants. C. hederifolium is my favourite, though, as it flowers in late autumn before its leaves develop. They are a surprise every year, and a happy reminder that there is life in the garden. I planted three corms when I planted a crabapple on our site – before we built our house! – and there is a substantial carpet of them, 15 years on. The mini cyclamen is the one with which we are most familiar, as they are the ones for sale everywhere for window boxes and so on. They can be used indoors, provided they are not in a hot room, or in direct sunlight. Water them from the bottom, ensuring they do not stand in water for any length of time. Outside, make sure the pot drains well, as waterlogging is the Cyclamen’s number one enemy! It is advisable not to plant them too deep and if possible, keep direct rain off the pots. Cyclamen have traditionally been the flower which represents tender love, and sincere warmth of affection, possibly because of their heartshaped leaves. They are also very good for people who cannot tolerate dry air, as they expel water through their leaves when humidity is low. However, this is also the reason that they dry out quickly!

Forget The Titans: Lakers Back To Winning Ways An excellent showing on home court was enough to finally stop the rot, writes Adam Moynihan

Pics: Eamonn Keogh

National League: Division 1 Scotts Lakers 89 Titans 60 They lost their previous four games but the Scotts Lakers made an emphatic return to winning ways on Saturday night with an utterly dominant display against the Titans of Galway. Confidence cannot have been very high within the camp but a determined performance saw the Killarney side race out ahead in the second quarter. From then on in, there was no looking back. An impressive 16-0 run in that second period meant the home team went in 50-33 up at the half and their lead was never really in danger. Coach Vojkan Bencic was able to rest some starters as the game progressed and the Lakers finished with five local players on the floor. The hosts had a good spread of scorers with Cian Clernon, Andrew Fitzgerald and Pádraig Lucey each chipping in with 11 to add to Antuan Bootle’s 15 and top scorer Mark Greene’s tally of 17. Speaking after the game, Bencic emphasised the

significance of this victory and said it was a result of improved preparation. “It was very important for us to win this one after losing the last four games,” he said. “We knew it would be a tough game but it’s not about the opponents, it’s about us. It’s difficult to prepare the team physically and psychologically but we were working very well last week. We spoke a lot with the players and agreed that we need to practice more. We prepared for the game very well.” Bencic specifically liked the focus and intensity of his players on Saturday, something he felt was lacking over the course of their losing streak. “It’s important that we don’t stop making fast breaks but first it’s important to play hard defence – all five guys,” he said. “The problem in the last four games was that we always had some guys without focus on defence so that’s what we need in the next period, to have everyone focused for the full game.” The Lakers started the season really well before fading considerably but the Croatian coach believes this kind inconsistency is to be expected. “This is our first season so we need to be prepared to lose games,” he stressed. “Maybe after the first two games everyone expected more easy wins but we

also could have lost those first two games. We could have been 0-6. For me, it’s normal that the team plays badly for some period. I think this small crisis is behind us.” Looking ahead, the Lakers have a couple of tough-looking fixtures against Ballincollig and Ulster University who are currently third and fourth respectively. Bencic is hopeful of two positive results but says he isn’t looking beyond the next match. “Ballincollig are a great team,” he admitted. “They beat us in Tralee (pre-season) and showed us how we need to play. I think we’ll play better against them this time.”

Upcoming Fixtures: November 11: Ballincollig (away) at 4pm November 18: Ulster University Elks (home) at 7.30pm Lakers top scorers: M Greene (17), A Bootle (15), C Clernon (11), A Fitzgerald (11) and Pádraig Lucey (11). Titans top scorers: K Ryan (29), T Fabricuss (10) and J Stec (8).

SCOTTS LAKERS got their season back on track with a comprehensive 29-point victory over Galway Titans in Killarney Sports Centre on Saturday night. It was a magnificent all round team performance from the home side and they laid the foundation for this victory early in the second quarter when they went on a 18-0 scoring run to set them up for a comfortable win. Titans were competitive early in the game with big American Keegan Ryan leading the way hitting 16 points and the visitors were 25-22 in front at the end of the first quarter. Antuan Bootle already had nine points for Scotts Lakers at this early stage but was rested for long periods of the match playing only 16 minutes overall as Coach Vojkan Bencic utilised his full bench. New signing Dan Griffin, Mark Greene, Justin Tuason, Padraig Lucey, Andrew Fitzgerald, Mihail Kapitanov and Cian Clernon were all on target as Lakers hit 18 unanswered points. Lakers had trailed 25-29 after two minutes of the quarter but this purple patch scoring spree turned it around for the Killarney side to open up a 43-29 lead with two minutes left in the half. Titans could only manage eight points in the whole quarter and Scotts Lakers were well in control to lead 50-33 at half-time. The home side maintained that advantage to stay 68-49 in front at the end of the third quarter. A Titans comeback was never on the cards and the final quarter was a mere formality. Scotts Lakers finished the match with five local Killarney players all on the court at the same time with young Dylan O’Sullivan outstanding alongside team captain Philip O’Connor, Andrew Fitzgerald and veterans Shane Horgan and Keith O’Grady. A comfortable 29-point win in the end and it was easily Lakers best display of the season so far. Credit must go to Coach Vojkan Bencic for

giving generous court time to 12 players and getting the most out of his squad. Mark Greene played 25 out of 40 minutes and was Lakers standout player on the night with an impressive 17 points. Equally impressive was Cian Clernon’s magnificent 11 points in just nine minutes of action. The inclusion of Padraig Lucey and Dan Griffin was a huge advantage to Scotts Lakers and their presence makes this team so much stronger and competitive in all sectors. It has to be said that Galway Titans didn’t offer much resistance. Keegan Ryan was the main threat despite the best efforts of Tom Fabricuss and Jan Stec. Much tougher tests lie ahead for Scotts Lakers including an away game against Ballincollig on this Saturday. November 11, in Ballincollig Community School at 4pm. The next home game is on Saturday, November 18, against Ulster Elks. Scotts Lakers scores and playing time minutes per player: Mark Greene (17 points, 25 minutes) Antuan Bootle (15 pts, 16 mins) Andrew Fitzgerald (11 pts, 23 mins), Cian Clernon (11 pts, 9 mins), Padraig Lucey (11 pts 23 mins), Dan Griffin (8 pts, 17 mins), Dylan O’Sullivan (6 pts, 14 mins), Mihail Kapitanov (4 pts, 19 minutes) Justin Tuason (3 pts, 20 minutes), Philip O’Connor (3 points, 25 minutes), Shane Horgan (5 minutes) Keith O’Grady (5 minutes). Titans scorers: Keegan Ryan 31, Tom Fabricuss 10, Jan Stec 7, Emmanuel Saah 6, James Barry 4, Mark Devaney Wynne 2 A minute’s silence was held before this match in memory of Neptune and Ireland Under 18 star Liam Chandler, who sadly passed away at the weekend.

Will Sonia O’Sullivan Be Awarded World Cup Medals? Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

WILL Sonia O’Sullivan be awarded two World Cup medals now that the cover has been blown on the Chinese runners, asks Ian O’Sullivan in the Irish Times? They say the truth always comes out in the end, and perhaps the only surprise about the cold truth now emerging about the notoriously dominant Chinese women’s distance runners of the early 1990s is that it took so long. Not too long for Sonia O’Sullivan, perhaps, who may be in line for a much-belated World Championship gold medal – possibly even two – after being originally run out of the gold medal positions by those Chinese runners over both 3,000m and 1,500m at the 1993 World Athletics Championships in Stuttgart, Will we ever forget those scenes on the TV as all three Chinese athletes stormed to the front past Sonia, but never to be seen again. Better known as “Ma’s Army”, given they all trained under the deeply regimental coach Ma Junren, they first came to prominence at those 1993 Championships in Stuttgart. Sonia O’Sullivan was run out of all three medals by three Chinese women in the 3,000m, finishing fourth, before bouncing back to claim silver over 1,500m, again behind another Chinese women. However it now appears likely those names and titles will be stripped from the record books. According to Chinese state media reports, all nine of Ma’s Army were forced to take “large doses of illegal drugs over the years”, according to one of the most prominent of those runners Wang Junxia – who won the 10,000m in Stuttgart, and also the gold medal over 5,000m at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, where O’Sullivan was forced to drop out. Junxia has detailed the regime of statesponsored doping in a letter, according to reports, including the South China Morning Post. The letter was signed by all nine teammates.

IAAF TO ACT The IAAF, the governing body of world athletics, has already announced its intention to pursue the implications of her

admission, by verifying the letter, which, if proven to be from the runners, will potentially have consequences for their records and medals. That would open the way for Sonia to receive her medals after all these years.

ROB HEFFERNAN It was a long time coming, but Rob Heffernan finally got the Olympic medalwinning moment of glory he deserved at a City Hall ceremony in Cork. Heffernan realised his life’s dream by receiving his bronze medal in front of family, friends and supporters, more than four years after the 50km walk in London 2012. The 2013 World 50km champion finished fourth at the London games, but Russian Sergey Kirdyapkin was stripped of his Olympic title in March for a doping violation, moving the 38-yearold into a medal position. “Ever since I was a kid I’ve been obsessed with medals,” Heffernan told RTÉ Sport. “Now to have the full set, and overcome the difficulties that I’ve overcome in my career,

looking back I think it will stand to me for the rest of my life: to keep going when times are tough.” He was delighted to be awarded the medal when I spoke to him outlining his change of fortune. This most dedicated of runners fully deserved his upgrading in the London Olympics.

Limerick Champs Break Athletic Hearts The Blues came so close to making the final but a late, late goal ended their quest for a Munster title, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

Back: Brendan Kealy, Shane Lynch, Paudie O’Connor, Shane Doolan, Ryan O’Carroll, Stuart Templeman (manager). Front: Will Courtney, Éanna Kavanagh, Jamie Doolan (captain), Adam Moynihan, Seánie Cournane and Mike O’Donoghue.

Munster Champions Trophy Semi-Final Killarney Athletic 2-3 Janesboro (Limerick) AET Losing a semi-final is always tough but Sunday’s defeat to Janesboro is an especially bitter pill to swallow. We went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the country for 90 minutes plus extra time and felt we deserved penalties at the very least, so to lose it at the death really hurt. Winning this competition would have meant a lot for the club and as players we would have relished another big final but, in the end, it just wasn’t to be. To be honest, I was a small bit underwhelmed with the opposition on the day. Don’t get me wrong, they’re a serious team and they have some quality players but the way people were talking before the game I was expecting a bunch of world-beaters to show up. Their centre forward Shane Clarke was a step ahead and is probably one of the best players I’ve played against but apart from that, no one really stood out. Again, I’m not saying they were poor or even average. They were all very good footballers. I just think that in this part of the world we’re often guilty of hyping up these teams from Limerick, Cork and Dublin to be something they’re not.The reality is that if these guys were that much better than us, they wouldn’t be playing junior soccer. Celtic proved that last year by beating the likes of Janesboro and taking Sheriff to penalties. At this level, if you have enough talent – which plenty of teams in Kerry do – and you’re organised and have the right attitude, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.I was also surprised at how direct they were. They almost exclusively launched long diagonal balls from the halfway line towards Clarke and played off of him. We knew he was going to be their main man but I was expecting them to pass the ball and keep possession a lot more than they did.

On the surface it’s another tough defeat for Athletic but there were plenty of positives to take away from the game To be fair, you can see why they adopted that approach. He was a real handful and even though our centre backs Paudie O’Connor and Éanna Kavanagh both had excellent games, the skilful big man was virtually unplayable at times. We took the lead in the first half when Shane Lynch beat the offside trap and squared for Will Courtney who couldn’t miss from a couple of yards out. It would have been nice to get in at the break with our noses in front but, in the 35th minute, a fortuitous deflection set Aaron Nunan through and he finished well from close range. We were doing okay at the start of the second but Janesboro went ahead on the hour mark. A free from our left was flicked on at the front post and Clarke snuck in at the back to volley home via the crossbar. It was a big blow but I think the lads showed good spirit to respond in a positive manner. We equalised with ten minutes left when Will Courtney fired a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the area and at that stage it felt as though the tide was turning. The visitors were starting to look a bit tired I thought but, to be fair to them, they found another gear in extra time and created some decent opportunities. Brendan Kealy kept us in it with a great save with around five minutes to go but a well-worked goal

involving Shane Walsh, Clarke and John Tierney resulted in the latter slotting home the winner. We were obviously devastated at the final whistle but fair play to Janesboro, they dug deep when they needed to and got the result. They’ll now face St Michael’s of Tipperary in the final next month. On the surface it’s another tough defeat for Athletic but there were plenty of positives to take away from the game. It was the strongest squad we’ve had since the cup final in July and, although I don’t think I had a great game personally, you couldn’t fault any of the lads who lined out the last day. Our attitude was spot on and we played some quality football against a team who will in all likelihood be challenging in the latter stages of the FAI Junior Cup. It’s fair to say that it has been a difficult couple of months but we’ve still only played two league games so really the season is only getting started. If we can match the intensity we showed against Janesboro, I have no doubt that we’re still capable of retaining the trophies we won last season. Athletic team: Brendan Kealy; Ryan O’Carroll, Paudie O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Adam Moynihan; Shane Doolan, Mike O’Donoghue; Seánie Cournane, Jamie Doolan, Will Courtney; Shane Lynch. Subs: Aidan O’Mahony, Brian O’Reilly and Michael Lindsay.

Crokes v KIB:

10.11.17

Five Things To Watch Out For

The Kerry champs may be favourites but the goals seem to be drying up, writes Adam Moynihan 1. Crokes hungry for goals Pat O’Shea rested a number of key players for last Saturday’s O’Donoghue Cup quarter-final against Kilcummin and his side very nearly fell to what would have been a shock defeat. Kilcummin led by five points at half-time and squandered a number of second half opportunities to put the tie to bed. In the end, a late strike by Man of the Match Tony Brosnan was enough to seal the deal and Kilcummin were left to wonder what might have been. There were no goals for the Crokes last weekend and, interestingly, they’ve now failed to find the net in three consecutive outings. Up until the county final, they had only drawn a blank in four of their 18 games this season and had scored more than one goal on 13 occasions. It’s a worrying statistic for the Kerrymen and one they’ll be hoping to put right on Sunday.

2. Can Kilmurry-Ibrickane cause an upset? In short, probably not. At 1/10, Crokes are overwhelming favourites to do the business on Sunday and it would be a huge upset if the Clare team came to Killarney and unseated the reigning All-Ireland champions. Having said that, KIB have now won back-to-back County Championships and have a record comparable to that of the Crokes in terms of domestic honours. They’ve claimed eight county titles since 2000 and actually won out Munster twice in that period (2004 and 2009). Their aim will be to keep things quiet at the back and hope the accurate kicking of the likes of Keelan Sexton and Ian McInerney is enough to get them over the line. It’s a tall order to say the least.

3. Renewing old acquaintances These two sides also met in last year’s Munster Championship as Crokes ran out 1-14 to 0-8 winners up in Quilty. Daithí Casey top-scored for the Crokes that day

with 1-2 while Colm Cooper added three points in a fairly comfortable victory. It was the third ever meeting between the sides with the Crokes winning the two previous encounters in 2011 and 2012 by narrow margins.

4. The other side On the other side of the draw, Cork kingpins Nemo Rangers take on Limerick champions Adare in Mallow on Sunday (2.45pm). Nemo are even stronger favourites than the Crokes (1/15) to advance to the Munster Final having narrowly defeated St Finbarr’s in their county final after a replay. Tomás Ó Sé kicked a point in that decider and the Kerry legend could very well be preparing for a showdown with a certain Crokes forward on November 26.

5. Legion waiting in the wings The big games keep on coming for the Crokes and they’ll have one eye on a huge O’Donoghue Cup semi-final against fierce rivals Legion next weekend.Legion have already sampled success this year by topping Division 2 and returning to the top flight of the County League at the first time of asking. It must be difficult for Alan O’Neill’s men to keep the momentum going with so little competitive football being played recently but victory in this one, and a shot at an O’Donoghue Cup Final, would be massive for the players. Crokes may have had the upper hand in the past couple of encounters but these games are always keenly contested and this Legion group will certainly hold no fear of their high-flying near neighbours. Spa’s Senior Ladies Crowned Division 3 County Champions THE Spa senior ladies ended their league campaign with an impressive win over Austin Stacks. The girls started well, keeping the Tralee side to three scores for 25 minutes in the first half. Spa were definitely the stronger team in the first half, leading 2-6 to 1-3. In the second half, however, Stacks started from the throw-in, scoring 1-2 before they settled with great points from Mairead Finnegan and Ciara Moynihan. Brilliant saves from Linda Bruggener kept Spa in the game with excellent defence work from Elizabeth Stack, Mairead Ben-

nett and captain Katie O’Brien. Stacks managed to draw the game once but Spa’s Cassandra Buckley and Loretta Maher lorded the centre and kept vital possession. Spa held the narrowest of margins to claim the Division 3 title. The club will be promoted to Division 2 next year and also Junior A, after its recent wins. Spa clinched three titles in 2017 and paid tribute to its management team of Tim O’Connor and Donal O’Doherty for their time and dedication and thanked the supporters who cheered on the The Spa senior ladies, Division 3 county champions, who defeated Austin Stacks. ladies throughout the year.

Home Ground Triumph For Killarney U16s ON SATURDAY Killarney U16s welcomed Kanturk to Aghadoe for the home team’s third match in the Munster U16 conference two fixture, with the final scoreline Killarney 36, Kanturk 7. The home team opened up with some fine handling and attacking plays. The first attack from the Killarney side produced a try from Tomas Clifford duly converted by Donnchadh Grealy who finished the game with four conversions. The first half continued with pressure continually being put on the

North Cork side with additional tries from John McCarthy, Odeniz Koyun, Gary Randles and Jose Ferrero. Kanturk did salvage a try towards the end of the half. The second half gave the opportunity for Killarney to use the bench and Craig McKenzie Vass, Evan Mannix and Brendan O’Donoghue added their names to the try scorers. The Killarney side were physical throughout and the quality never dropped for the first to the last minute. The team on the day included

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THERE was widespread disappointment at the recent decision by the technical review group to nominate and back South Africa as the host venue for the 2023 Rugby World Cup. The IRFU have been advised to focus on the 2027 bid, however Dick Spring and even Taoiseach Leo Varadkar came out fighting saying that all was not lost yet. However, with the technical review group putting Ireland in third place, it is highly

Matt McAuliffe, who was very physical on his tackling and attacking, Brendan O’Donoghue whose lineout throws were delivered straight and fast. Odeniz Koyun continues to be a dangerous attacker and effective defender. In the second row Sam Casey and Evan Mannix dominated the lineouts. The back three of McCarthy, McKenzie Vass and Talbot continued to take every opportunity to attack and break the lines. The partnership of Peter Walsh and Donnchadh Grealy was at times telepathic. The centre duo of Mark Sheahan and

unlikely that World Rugby Board members will go against the “advice” given and back either Ireland or France. A huge disappointment for Ireland, but for Killarney and Kerry in particular it must be said. Killarney was deemed to be “too small” and “lacking experience in hosting international events”. On paper Killarney with its 14,000 population may be smaller than the likes of Johannesburg etc but you can guarantee that Killarney would have pulled out all the stops to host this prestigious tournament. Fitzgerald Stadium is seen as a “risk” as work is needed to the stadium itself and the media infrastructure is lacking but again Killarney and Fitzgerald Stadium would have come up

Jose Ferrero was solid in defence and continued to make inroads through the Kanturk lines. The wings of Tomas Clifford and Jack O’Connell were solid and the full back Gary Randles (man of the match) was excellent with three tries by full time. The second half saw the debut of Jose Manuel Salinas Sala De Bora at prop, James Kennelly as always solid under the high ball, Adam Cronin at prop, Cian Murphy who was solid with the boot, Adam McSweeney who used his strength and Josh Campbell on the wing.

trumps. Could you imagine having the World Cup on our doorstep? Imagine what this would do for the game locally and nationally? I’m sure the likes of Dick Spring, who has vowed to fight on as it’s still to play for, will have the 2027 tournament in the back of his mind. Anyway, there was some good news for Munster as they took on Welsh side the Dragons in Cork last weekend and won pretty comprehensively with JJ Hanrahan scoring seven conversions from the boot in his first outing at fly half, in a 49-6 win. Hopefully JJ can silence his detractors and back this performance up in the near future. Great to see Kerry represented on the Munster team once more.

Spa Muckross Community Games Spa Muckross received a PR award at last Friday night’s County Awards. A huge thanks to our county committee for the excellent work they do. None of them are ready to retire yet, but if their own areas fail to elect a committee this year, they will have to step down at county level, as they must be a member of a local committee. If there is no county committee, there is no Kerry Community Games. Hopefully it won’t come to that, as has happened in other counties. It’s up to the participants’ parents to keep it going. Each of the 41 areas must elect a Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer, so that’s a minimum of 123 parents required in Kerry for 2018. Statistics from the county website

Sport

state that 41 areas registered in 2017. A massive 3735 participants competed at county level, many more competed at area level aiming to qualify for county finals. Competitors could choose from 12 individual activities & 39 team events. A total of 289 teams competed.

On The Ball Dr Crokes Club EAST KERRY - O’DONOGHUE - QUARTER FINAL: Played in Lewis Road on Saturday 4th of November. Dr Crokes 0-12 Kilcummin 0-11. In this O’Donoghue Cup Quarter Final we played second fiddle to Kilcummin for three quarters of the game. Even though we were missing a number of our first team players, some of our replacements put in a good shift and did their selection for future games no harm. In the first quarter, even though our opponents had more of the play, we matched them on the scoreboard at the end of the first quarter. We both scored four points. We failed to score in the second quarter in a period in which Kilcummin outscored us four points to nil. This left them ahead 0-9 to 0-4 at the interva. The teams exchanged points on two occasions in the third quarter, leaving us 0-11 to 0-6 behind as we faced the las fifteen minutes. Our management brought on four of our established players at this stage and this contributed enormously to our lads scoring six points without reply in this final quarter. This gave us a one point win and a place in the semi final against Killarney Legion. In fairness to Kilcummin they had good chances in this last quarter to at least equalize the game. Progressive 31: Progressive 31 is on every Wednesday night in Crokes Clubhouse. It will start at 8.00pm. You will need to bring money and a partner €5 per person. Lotto: Lotto 10, 15, 20, 24 Jackpot €4500 Winner Maura Lyne Knocklebede. Next Draw Sunday 12th of November in Speakeasy. Jackpot €3000

East Kerry GAA O’DONOGHUE CUP: Dr Crokes pro-

gressed to the Semi Final of the Aquila Club O’Donoghue Cup against Kilcummin at Lewis Road. Kilcummin led at the break 0-9 to 0-4. The sides were level in last minutes. Dr Crokes kicked the winning point - 0-12 to 0-11. Semi Final = Dr Crokes V Killarney Legion. THE TATLER JACK EK MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: The East Kerry Minor Championship has reached the Finals stage. Fossa came out on top against Firies in the quarter final: Fossa 5-13 Firies 1-11. In the A semi finals Fossa edged Glenflesk by the minimum and Dr Crokes prevailed against Rathmore. In the Minor B semi finals, Gneeveguilla won against Killarney Legion and Firies proved too strong for Cordal /Scartaglen. MD O’SHEA EAST KERRY U16 CHAMPIONSHIP: Rathmore won the division 1 final against a gallant Killarney Legion. The Division 4 final, played under lights in the outstanding Spa facilities, was won by Currow. The division 2 Final (Dr Crokes V Firies) and Division 3 Final (Fossa V Kilcummin) will be fixed for first date available. FIXTURE: Fr Galvin Cup Semi Final. Saturday 18 November at 12.30pm. Firies V Fossa

Fossa GAA EAST KERRY MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Fossa played Glenflesk in the East Kerry Minor championship semi final. This was a tough, close encounter and there was never going to be much in it either way. The first half was nip and tuc all the way, while Glenflesk slightly shaded the possession stakes Fossa remained in touch with some fantastic scores from David Clifford, Emmett O’Shea and Harry Buckley. Glenflesk held the advantage at the break, 0-08 to 0-07. Fossa started brightly in the second half and took the lead courtesy of frees from Emmett O’Shea and David Clifford. Glenflesk hit a purple patch and created a few goal chances but were denied by some brilliant goal keeping by Shane O’Sullivan in the Fossa goal who had a fantastic game all throughout. By the 20th minute of the half, Glenflesk had extended their lead to three points, they were triple marking David Clifford at this stage and Fossa were finding it difficult to break down their defence. Fossa needed some magic to get back into the game and who better to provide it that Emmett O’Shea. After great work by Ruari Doyle, Emmett crashed the ball to the back of the Glenflesk net to revitalize Fossa, from here to the end they played with a spring in their step. Brilliant points from the irrepressible David Clifford and Emmett O’Shea gave Fossa a well-deserved one point victory. This was a great win for the team where the aforementioned Shane O’Sullivan was excellent in goal, Gary Cronin and Killian Buckley were outstanding and led the defence very well, Cian O’Shea and Mark Donnellan worked hard around the middle of the pitch, David Clifford showed why he is such a rare talent despite being very tightly marked, young Harry Buckley put in another superb display and Em-

mett O’Shea was the best player on the pitch, showing yet again what a great prospect this man is. Final score Fossa 1-14, Glenflesk 0-14. They will now face Dr Crokes in the final.

Killarney Legion GAA U16 BOYS: The old Irish saying “Tus maith leath na hoibre “ would probably sum up this East Kerry Championship Division 1 final in a nutshell. In a striking resemblance to the County League final we contested earlier this year, all the damage was done in the opening period. When James O Sullivan blew time on the first half Rathmore had plundered 3 goals to go alongside the 8 points they kicked and we went into the dressing room 11 points in arrears. Rathmore forward play was deadly and efficient and there looked like only one winner at its stage. But credit where it’s due our lads rallied to great effect and a Niall McGillycuddy goal coupled to a Ryan O Grady penalty meant the gap was down to 2 points with as many minutes to go. But Rathmore held firm to land the coveted title. The positives were there for all to see in a tremendous, courageous and battling second half and maybe better decision making on the field at crucial times was a factor. Keeping the scoreboard ticking over when chasing a game is always important and a couple of chances definitely went astray. To sum up the season, even though no silverware was garnered, the lads can be justifiably ranked in the County’s top 3 alongside other clubs Rathmore and Austin Stacks. LEGION LADIES: A Kerry Ladies Minor Blitz was held at Ballyrickard recently and Legion drawn in group 1. In the first game vs Corca Dhuibhne they played well and came out with a nice win. The second game saw them play Finuge / St. Senans and a sound defensive effort kept them scoreless for the entire game. Game 3 was against Rathmore and a great performance saw us only lose by 3 points in the end. We qualified for the B final as a result and went down by three points to Miltown Listry. After 4 games fatigue was setting in but a most productive day was definitely had with the girls finishing 4th out of the 11 teams entered. O DONOGHUE CUP: Our Seniors will face Dr Crokes in the O Donoghue Cup semi final on Sunday November 19th at 2pm in Fitzgerald Stadium. LOTTO: Monday October 30th. Numbers were 2..14..16..18. Glenflesk GLENFLESK MINIORS: (Sponsored by O’Brien’s Topoil And the Kerryway). Our Minor team lost a very close contest to Fossa on Sunday last at Barraduff Community Field in the East Kerry Championship semi final. Nothing more could be asked of our players who left everything on the field. It took a late goal from Fossa to swing the game in their favour. FT Fossa 1-12 Glenflesk 0-14 LOTTO: No winner of the lotto which took place in John Dan’s on 06 November 2017. Jackpot - €3,600. Numbers were 6 11 17 18. The next draw will take place in Spillane’s Bar on 20 November and the Jackpot is €3,800.

Kilcummin GAA SENIOR FOOTBALL: DR Crokes 0-12 Kilcummin 0-11. Our Senior team completed their season on Saturday last when they bowed out of the O’Donoghue Cup to Dr Crokes in Lewis Road by a single point. This was a very creditable performance and we even lead by six points early in the second half. However, Dr Crokes introduced some influential substitutes and this combined with a number of spurned opportunities by ourselves saw the home team go forward to face legion in the semi final. What has been at times a difficult season for players and management with injuries and absences their recent performances have given the supporters much hope for the year ahead and with dedication and a little bit of luck who knows where it might take us. Well done to players, management and supporters for your commitment to your club. LOTTO: There was no winner on Sunday 5th November 2017. Numbers drawn were 7, 8, 18, 25. Next Draw Sunday, 19th November 2017. Jackpot now €8,000.
