The long-awaited N22 Killarney–Farranfore upgrade has been formally included in the Department of Transport’s Sectoral Plan, part of the revised National Development Plan (NDP), which was published on Wednesday.
The project, forming a key element of the Kerry–Cork Economic Corridor, is now confirmed as one of the national road schemes that will progress to procurement in 2029 and construction in 2030. The Government has committed that the project, with an estimated cost between €250 million and €500 million, will be delivered within the lifetime of this NDP.
Phase One of the bypass is already advancing, with topographical and geotechnical groundworks under way.
Minister Michael Healy-Rae TD and Deputy Danny Healy-Rae TD welcomed the inclusion, describing it as a significant milestone for the county.
Minister Michael Healy-Rae said the commitment is the “clearest and strongest” ever made to the Killarney–Farranfore project, adding that the bypass is now being treated by Government as a strategic national investment.
Deputy Danny Healy-Rae highlighted the recent earlier allocation of €3 million, saying it was essential for progressing detailed surveys and planning. He noted that ground investigation works began on November 3 and that the momentum

built this year was key to ensuring the project reached Sectoral Plan inclusion. Both Deputies stated that the road upgrade is critical for the development of the Kerry–Cork Economic Corridor, traffic relief in Killarney and Farranfore, road-safety improvements, and longterm economic prospects.
Minister Michael Healy-Rae added that he wished to thank the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and Minister for Transport for supporting the inclusion, saying, “Their commitment ensures that this project is now firmly positioned for delivery.”
Fianna Fáil TD for Kerry Michael Cahill also welcomed the announcement, calling it the result of consistent long-term political work at Government level. He said the confirmation represents major progress for Killarney, Kerry and the wider South Kerry region.
Deputy Cahill said: “It is evident that Fianna Fáil continues to prioritise key projects in Kerry, priorities that I personally submitted and fought to secure in the Programme for Government. As recently as two weeks ago, I met with Minister Darragh O’Brien in his office alongside my son Councillor Tommy Cahill to reiterate the critical need for the N22 Killarney–Farranfore section of the
Kerry–Cork Economic Corridor and the Killarney Strategic Links Project to be delivered in a timely fashion. I have also held private meetings with An Taoiseach Micheál Martin regarding these vital projects. Today’s announcement is the direct result of that steady, responsible work.”
In his statement, Deputy Cahill emphasised the influence Fianna Fáil holds in delivering major State investment, saying:
“Anyone that understands politics will know that Fianna Fáil, being the largest political party in Government, hold all the cards in terms of where investment is directed to and it is no wonder that Kerry and specifically Killarney and the old constituency of Kerry South is now seeing real, substantial investment and progress having elected a second Fianna Fáil TD. Non-party members can claim credit all they like but it is indeed laughable and at the end of the day, all they are trying to do is hoodwink the people of Kerry, yet again.”
Deputy Cahill said the N22 upgrade remains central to his priorities: “This road is central to strengthening the Kerry–Cork Economic Corridor, improving safety, easing congestion, and supporting long-term economic growth. It has been my priority and a Fianna Fáil priority from day one, and its inclusion in the NDP sectoral plan demonstrates that the government is finally putting it on the path to delivery.”
He also thanked local Killarney MD coun-
cillors, saying “Without their voices and determination, it would not have reached this stage.”
Kerry TD and Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Integration Norma Foley separately confirmed that the N22 project will receive funding of up to €500 million under the transport sectoral plan. She said the bypass is now one of the key road projects approved for progression and delivery by Government by 2030.
Minister Foley said: “Since becoming minister in the last government and this present government, I have secured funding to allow for route selection and preliminary works for the Killarney bypass. Today the final tranche of funding of up to €500 million for the Farranfore to Killarney bypass is included in the Transport sectoral plan, which is one of the key road projects for funding and delivery by government.”
The sectoral plan also allocates funding for several other transport developments in Kerry, including the 2.5km Tralee Northern Relief Road, with a €20–€50 million budget, and the completion of the South Kerry Greenway.
Minister Foley welcomed the broader regional commitments, saying: “It is very positive to see funding confirmed for the Abbeyfeale and Newcastle West relief roads and the Limerick to Foynes route, which includes Adare bypass due for completion in 2027.”

Focus Housing Association CLG, the housing arm of Focus Ireland, has submitted an application to Kerry County Council for amendments to its previously approved 67-unit residential development at Woodlands Industrial Estate, Killarney Bypass Road.
The original permission was granted under Kerry County Council reference 21/205.
The new application maintains the total number of residential units at 67, but outlines several significant internal and external reconfigurations. The overall height and number of storeys for the development will remain unchanged from the scheme initially permitted.
The proposed modifications include a reconfiguration of the basement to incorporate water and attenuation tanks, a lift pit, and an ESB substation. Changes are also outlined for the ground floor, with modifications to the bicycle parking area, which will increase the total number of spaces to 136, and alterations to the bin area.
The plans detail a reduction in car parking spaces from the originally approved
80 down to 74, which will still include four accessible spaces. A substantial decrease is also proposed for the communal open space, which will drop from 719 square metres to 375 square metres due to the removal of a planned roof terrace. Internal layouts and circulation routes on each floor will be altered, with the final unit mix proposed as 33 one-bedroom and 34 two-bedroom apartments. The changes will result in an increase in the total gross floor area of approximately 871.5 square metres.
Focus Housing Association is seeking permission for the temporary removal and subsequent rebuilding of an existing retaining wall adjacent to the N22 Bypass Road. The wall will be rebuilt to match its existing height and material finish.
A man was seriously injured following a stabbing incident at an IPAS accommodation centre in Killarney this week.
The incident occurred at Linden House on New Road where approximately 50 international protection seekers are housed. Gardaí were called to the scene after a disturbance was reported, and one man was taken to hospital with a stab wound to the upper thigh. Another man was arrested at the location a short time later and court cases followed.

Two Killarney brothers who helped save their sibling’s life earlier this year have now received national recognition, following their success in the Kerry Garda Youth Awards in September.
Conor and Gary O’Sullivan, from Whitebridge Manor, were presented with a National Garda Youth Achievement Award at a ceremony in the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise, at the weekend. The event was hosted by broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan.
The award recognises their actions on April 6, when their older brother Seán Óg collapsed suddenly at home from an undiagnosed genetic heart condition.
The brothers, along with their father Seán, responded immediately and began CPR. Their efforts kept Seán Óg alive until emergency services arrived.
Doctors later confirmed that several members of the family carried Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). Conor,
Gary, their mother and Seán Óg have since had implantable defibrillators fitted.
The incident prompted significant media attention at the time and the brothers began actively encouraging people to learn CPR. They also started promoting awareness of defibrillators and how quickly they can make a difference in a life-threatening emergency.
Since then, they have led a community effort to install a public defibrillator at the entrance to Whitebridge Manor, beside the main Cork Road. They have carried out fundraising for Killarney First Responders, Brú Columbanus and the Michael Lenihan Heartsafe Campaign. Their aunt, Anne Holland, nominated them for the Kerry Garda Youth Awards earlier this year, noting that the family “experienced a very traumatic health setback” but that the brothers “stepped up” and turned their experience into a positive effort to help others.

Seán Kelly MEP and Leader of Fine Gael in the European Parliament has warned that there can be “no decision on Ukraine without Ukraine” and without Europe’s input and agreement.
The Ireland South MEP addressed the Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday during a debate on the US plan to end the Russian war against Ukraine. The US proposal has raised serious concerns that the Trump administration is pushing an agreement that heavily favours Russia over Ukraine.
“Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Appeasing bullies won't stop wars”, said Kelly, a Member of the Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs.
“Yes, we need a plan to end this war, to end the destruction and the violence. But
how we bring that about matters. This is not a surrender: there can be no decisions made without Ukraine and without Europe. Russia does not get to dictate the future security of Ukraine or of Europe.
“The fundamental principle that borders cannot be changed by force remains paramount, and under no ceasefire agreement should the front lines be frozen where they currently are.
"Creating peace by granting Russia all its demands is not the way we do business in Europe. To do so would only encourage other authoritarian regimes to attack neighbouring countries in the sure knowledge that, for the sake of peace, they'd be given more land. And this would lead to more wars in due course.
"We need a real peace plan, not a capitulation plan. Slava Ukraini!”, Kelly concluded.

Kerry TD Michael Cahill says he is pushing to ensure the Killarney Innovation Centre secures the funding it needs for its planned expansion.
Deputy Cahill raised the issue in a recent Parliamentary Question to Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke.
The centre has applied to the Smart Regions Enterprise Innovation Scheme under Enterprise Ireland to support future projects.
Minister Burke told Deputy Cahill that the centre’s application will receive “appropriate consideration” and confirmed that Enterprise Ireland will assist the organisation in shaping proposals that match the aims of the scheme.
Deputy Cahill said the support would give the Killarney Innovation Centre “a first run to the ball” in identifying suitable projects that can attract national funding. He added that the centre has received strong Government backing for more than 30 years.
The Minister also noted that three other Kerry projects are progressing under the same national scheme, including a €1 million allocation for the AI Navigator Programme at the RDI Hub in Killorglin, which is designed to help small businesses adapt to artificial intelligence.

The opening of the new Community Hospital in Killarney remains on hold, despite the facility's construction being complete.
The hospital, which was originally promised to open two years ago, now appears to face significant delays related to staff recruitment. The issue was raised in the Dáil this week by Deputy Danny HealyRae TD, who voiced concerns regarding the barriers preventing retired local nurses from returning to work part-time. Deputy Healy-Rae highlighted that several retired nurses were willing to offer their
services for a few hours per week to ease staffing issues but were subsequently warned that such a move could affect their pensions.
Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Healy-Rae stated: "We are short of regular staff in many areas, including in our hospitals, home helps and in all health services. I know a few nurses who have retired. There is a new community hospital due to open in Killarney and they have said they would be available to work a number of hours during the week. Do you know what they got back? It was a letter
threatening them that their pensions could be stopped if they did not answer this question about pension abatement. A number of nurses gave their lives to nursing in Kerry who are very capable men and women. They are terrified now because they mentioned the fact that they would work a few hours. The end of the letter they got back suggested that their pensions might be cut off completely. I want that to be dealt with because it has happened to a number of people in and around Killarney and Tralee who would like to go back to work. I am asking
for that to be dealt with."
The Deputy also pressed the Government for a clear opening date for the hospital.
"I mention the new community hospital-nursing home in Killarney. The building is finished but there is no date for the transfer. I do not know if it can happen in the depths of winter but it needs to happen. Are the staff in place? Are they organised? When will it be fully open? A lot of people, including elected representatives, sick people and elderly people, are asking about this."

Preparations are in full swing for the Killarney Musical Society’s upcoming production of All Shook Up, and three dedicated chorus members have shared an exclusive look into their experience with the Killarney Advertiser.
Charlene Brosnan, Joanna Hughes and Debra Hayden spoke about the friendships, challenges, and high-energy numbers defining the production. For all three, the friendships are the most treasured part of being in the cast. Charlene highlighted "The buzz that builds during the production process," while Debra stated, "Without a doubt, it is the friendships I have made." Joanna, a teacher, is enjoying the unique experience of "being taught, getting new ideas and working with adults."
Chorus roles in the Elvis-inspired show demand significant versatility. Charlene noted the show’s variety: "One minute I’m a jailhouse rocker, the next I’m a devil in disguise!" Debra described her performance range as "raw emotion to pure sass," encompassing extensive dancing and singing. Joanna focuses her efforts on maintaining versatility through dedicated practice, sleep, and hydration. The most fun number for the trio is clearly a high-octane one. Charlene loves Jailhouse Rock, calling it "so upbeat and impossible not to bop along to." Both Joanna and Debra picked C’mon Everybody. Joanna specifically enjoys that it features not only vocal dialogue but also "dance dialogue between Chad and the chorus," while Debra anticipates how amazing the number will look for the audience.
A special Long Service Awards ceremony was held at Killarney House this week to recognise National Parks and Wildlife Service staff who have served more than 35 and 40 years with the Department.
Niall Ó Donnchú, Director General of the NPWS, presented the awards to staff members in front of colleagues from Killarney National Park and the wider Kerry and Cork divisions.
Those honoured included Sheila Carroll, Mary Walsh, Gerry Murphy and Declan O’Donnell in the front row, with Pat Dawson, Sean Breen, Mike Fleming, Liam Lenihan and Pádraig O’Sullivan also receiving awards.
The event acknowledged decades of work and commitment to the protection and management of Ireland’s national parks and wildlife.

When asked where the audience should pay extra attention to the chorus, Charlene pointed to the "incredible" harmonies and the choreography throughout the show. Joanna singled out the finale, describing it as "pure rock ‘n roll" with high energy from the cast, chorus, and band. Debra offered three key numbers: All Shook Up, Let Yourself Go, and Devil in Disguise
Rehearsal challenges vary, but staying focused is key. Charlene battles distraction from "mischief makers" in her Alto section. Joanna finds the biggest hurdle is combining Alto harmonies with high intensity and intricate dance moves, which she overcomes by practising at home. Debra focuses on consistently showing up "to the best of my ability" and remaining open to advice.
The cast members also have a personal connection to the music. Charlene has always adored Elvis’s music, enjoying that her children now sing along, showing its timeless appeal. Debra's appreciation stems from her father playing Elvis frequently while she was growing up. Joanna visited Graceland in August, making her involvement in All Shook Up perfect timing. Ultimately, they hope the audience leaves with a sense of joy, humour, and the message that "love is everywhere if you are open to it."
A demonstration organised by the Community Action Tenants’ Union (CATU) took place in near Market Cross in the town centre on Sunday, to highlight the urgent plight of several tenants facing mass evictions from a housing estate in the town.
CATU, a grassroots movement campaigning for stronger protections for tenants and struggling mortgage holders, mobilised local support against the looming crisis.
Miriam Ní Shúilleabháin from Kilcummin, who attended the event, said that it was "heartening to see people mobilising in support of those who have little prospect of the basic shelter of a 'home' from one day to the next."
However, Ms Ní Shúilleabháin expressed disappointment regarding political engagement: "It is disappointing that none of our elected TDs or senators was present to support these unfortunate people and I spotted only one councillor, who was from the Tralee Municipal District."
She stressed that elected representatives have the power to bring pressure to bear on government to address this pressing social issue.
The issue of mass eviction by institutional landlords is a major concern nationwide.
Ní Shúilleabháin warned that the consequences of these evictions would extend far beyond the affected families: "Community groups will be left without members, employers in our town will be left without essential workers, local schools can expect to lose pupils as many of the tenants are children attending primary and secondary schools in the area."
She noted that the loss of pupils could even jeopardise teaching jobs in smaller schools and added that there appears to be little political will to take urgent action to prevent what she called "this inhumane treatment of people who form an integral part of the fabric of our town."
She proposed that as a starting point, the government should reconsider reintroducing the no fault eviction ban.

For the first time since 1937, Santa will not be based at Deenagh Lodge for his pre-Christmas visits to Killarney.
Ongoing roof re-thatching works at the traditional cottage in Killarney National Park mean the grotto is being relocated for this year’s Christmas in Killarney celebrations.
Santa will now meet families at Golden Gates Lodge at Killarney House and Gardens, just inside the main entrance on the Muckross Road. The new venue is a short walk from the original lodge.
Santa will be in Killarney from this week until Tuesday, December 23, operating Thursdays and Fridays from 4.00pm to 9.00pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 11.30am to 6.00pm. Advance booking is advised. Santa has been visiting children at Deenagh Lodge since his first appearance there in 1937.
Despite the new location, visitors can still expect the usual experience, including meeting Santa and the elves, handing in letters, and receiving a small keepsake. Santa has said he is looking forward to the new setting and hopes families enjoy the change while works continue at Deenagh Lodge.

A former Mayor of Killarney, who dedicated so much of his life to the town and its people, is to be honoured in a very special way this Christmas.
The feature star on the spectacular Tree of Light at St Mary’s Cathedral will take on an extra special meaning this year as it will be dedicated to the late Donal Grady, a long-serving local councillor who worked diligently and passionately for the community.
Donal, who passed away last in 2024, was a dedicated public representative who was never reluctant to express an opinion and he worked with great passion and a real sense of purpose on behalf of his loyal supporters.
Through his work as a long-serving chief fire officer in Killarney, he helped so many families at a time when they most needed assistance and reassurance and he brought a great sense of calm and responsibility to the position.
Donal always put Killarney first. He loved
the town and its people, he worked passionately on their behalf and he achieved so much and helped so many people.
First elected to Killarney Town Council in 1999, following his late father, John, and brother Seán into politics, he held his seat in every election and he was a very popular and proud Mayor of Killarney in 2010/11. When the town councils were abolished in 2019, he was successful in his campaign to win a seat on Kerry County Council.
His son, Martin, the current Mayor of Killarney, was co-opted on to Kerry County Council when Donal stepped down in 2023 and it was a particularly proud day for Donal when his son retained the seat, in emphatic fashion, in the last local elections.
A true champion of the disadvantaged,

Pig’s Lane was ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘Best Cocktail Experience’ category at the prestigious 2025 Food and Wine Restaurant of the Year Awards, held recently at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin in association with Rémy Martin.
The awards, a highlight of Ireland’s culinary calendar, celebrate the very best in restaurants, cafés, wine experiences, and cocktail programmes nationwide. The award placed the Killarney venue in second place on the night, behind one of Ireland’s most accoladed bars, Bar 1661 in Dublin.

Donal was a strong voice for the homeless, always highlighting their plight and fighting their corner and the right to affordable housing was always at the top of his agenda.
Cllr Niall Kelleher, Chairman of the Christmas in Killarney Festival – a sub-committee of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce – said the star dedication was a fitting tribute to a man who is very fondly remembered in the town.
“He contributed enormously, over a long period of time, to the local community and he always had the interests of Killarney to the forefront of his agenda,” he said.
The 100ft Tree of Light on the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral, which is adorned with over 3,500 energy efficient bulbs,
creates a magnificent focal point during the Christmas in Killarney celebrations. The feature Californian Redwood tree is one of the most wonderful visual features in Killarney and it will greet tens of thousands of people passing the cathedral. The Tree of Light was first lit to mark the millennium year when it commemorated all those who lost their lives in the conflict in Northern Ireland and it was again illuminated in the mid-2000s to remember those who had been killed on Irish roads. Since then the project is all about community and, in the past, the star at the top of the tree has been dedicated to great community activists Johnny Hickey, Yvonne Quill, Paul Coghlan and Rena Kennelly.
The recognition comes hot on the heels of a string of accolades for Pig’s Lane this year, including winning Best Designed Bar at the 2025 Bar of the Year Awards and receiving 1 Pin from the prestigious Pinnacle Guide, an honour shared by only two other Irish bars including, Bar 1661 and The Sidecar at The Westbury Hotel.
Founder of Pig’s Lane, Gemma Ring said: ‘It’s an honour to receive this recognition from Food and Wine Ireland. The awards celebrate the very best of Irish food and drink so to be recognised at this level and among the countries finest bars is incredibly special for us.”

Businesses in Killarney have been fully briefed on what measures they need to take to ensure greater cyber security to protect their companies.
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce hosted a very informative breakfast briefing in the International Hotel at which they keynote speakers were cyber security experts Mike Dennehy and Ger McAuliffe from progressive local company Tricel.
The opening question at the event was how will a business operate tomorrow if it loses access to its data today?
Mike and Ger recommended that all employers include IT training as part of the induction programme for new entrants,
organise monthly awareness training for all employees and conduct monthly spot-checks to ensure everything is going according to plan.
It was essential, they pointed out, not to give the same level of access to all employees to reduce risk and to devise a disaster recovery plan in case it is needed.
Companies have also been advised not to allow the public to use their private wi-fi network and, instead, to set up a public or guest network.
Chamber thanked the experts from Tricel for their engaging talk which certainly put the spotlight very firmly on the need to enhance cyber security measures.

Gleneagle Hotel is set to host six Irish Citizenship Ceremonies on Monday, December 1, and Tuesday, December 2, welcoming over 12,000 people to the town.
Due to the significant number of attendees expected over the two days, An Garda Síochána has implemented a traffic management plan for the area surrounding the venue.
A free shuttle service will be operational from 8:00am each morning.
This service will run from the train station and from Scott’s Street, incorporating multiple pick-up and drop-off points along Muckross Road.
Attendees and the general public are advised that parking at or near the Gleneagle will be limited. Local hotels, guesthouses, and B&B operators have been asked to encourage guests attending the ceremonies to walk or make use of the provided shuttle services to avoid driving to the venue.

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has a new vice president.
Carol Dempsey has joined the executive of the business representative organisation which had its end-of-year meeting in the Killarney Park Hotel on Wednesday. Carol will work closely with president Johnny McGuire on several projects over the next 12 months.
A native of Dungarvan, Co Waterford, she has lived and worked in Killarney for the past 35 years and she owns and operates the Children’s House Montessori Schools in Killarney and Milltown.
She works alongside her daughter, Róisín, who returned after some time in Canada to work in the business.
Carol has represented the Montessori community at an executive level both nationally and internationally.
A long-time member of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, she was very involved in the early days of the Christmas in Killarney Festival and she is also a member of the organising committee of the hugely successful Wander Wild Festival.
Carol said she is really looking forward to working with the team at Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce which has a very dynamic and can-do attitude.
“Killarney gives us so much in terms of vibrancy and vitality and I am looking forward to giving something back and playing a greater role going forward,” she said.
Significant traffic delays are expected near the Gleneagle and along Muckross Road, with the worst congestion anticipated between 9:30am and 4:30pm on both days.
Six ceremonies are scheduled to take place across the two days, with start times set for 11:00am, 1:00pm, and 3:00pm each day. The duration of each ceremony is expected to be approximately 30 minutes.
The local community is advised to allow additional travel time if travelling to or through town on these dates and to plan routine journeys accordingly to minimise disruption. Guests staying in local accommodation should leave their cars parked and utilise the shuttle services.

Killarney-based musician Liam O’Connor and his daughter Saoirse O’Connor have made history, both taking home top honours at the 21st Rémy Martin Cork Business Awards.
Liam O’Connor was named the inaugural recipient of The Order of Saint Finbarr, the highest honour presented by Business Cork. The award recognises his 35year career spent promoting Cork and Kerry through his unique musical blend and global performances.
The accordion maestro is known internationally as the “fastest fingers in the world,” holding a Guinness World Re-
cord, and has often been called "the Jimi Hendrix of the accordion." Business Cork created the new honour to acknowledge exceptional cultural contribution, choosing O’Connor as its first recipient.
In a remarkable night for the family, Liam’s daughter, Saoirse O’Connor, was also celebrated, winning the prestigious title of Cork Entertainer of the Year 2025. Saoirse, a wonderful singer and teacher, was recognised for her talents and her part in the family’s musical journey, which spans generations and represents the best of both Cork and Kerry. The Rotary Club of Killarney held its 22nd Annual Wine and Art Night on Wednesday at the Great Southern Killarney, attracting a large crowd for one of the town’s longest-running fundraisers.
The event featured an exhibition of work by local artists and craftspeople, along with a charity auction and raffle.
One of the highlights of the night was the auction of a framed, signed Kerry senior football jersey from the 2025 All-Ireland winning team. The winning bid came from Mayor of Killarney Martin Grady, who praised the Rotary Club for staging another successful event. He said it was a great evening that showcased local tal-
ent, with 30 per cent of proceeds directed to local charities.
The fundraiser is organised in partnership with Daly’s SuperValu, Cronin’s Cider and Killarney Credit Union. This year’s proceeds will support a wide range of schools and community groups, including Faha, Fossa, Gaelscoil Faithleann, Knockanes, Loughquittane and St Brendan’s College, as well as Kerry Stars, Killarney Athletic AFC, Killarney Valley AC, Killorglin Family Resource Centre and the Rise & Shine Trust.
The event also included a live auction, spot prizes and displays from long-standing and new contributors. Music was provided by Mike Neeson.

Killarney Women’s Shed held the prize–giving for its first photography competition and opened a two-week exhibition at Killarney House last week.
The display features photographs taken by members of the shed following a series of digital photography workshops.
The exhibition is located in the upstairs gallery overlooking the gardens at Killarney House and is free to visit. The committee thanked Diana Fawcitt and the Killarney House team for their support in hosting the event.
The competition followed workshops funded by SICAP through South Kerry Development Partnership and delivered by photographer Michelle Breen Crean. Participants learned practical skills using phone cameras and focused on the theme “Timeless Landscapes”.
Seventy photographs were entered.
The winners were: Fionnuala Lynch; Anne O’Keefe; Joan O’Gorman and Mary O’Leary
Judging was carried out by photographers Michelle Breen Crean and Tatyana McGough and journalist Breda Joy who also presented the prizes.
Killarney Women’s Shed meets every Tuesday at 10.30am at Spa GAA Club and offers activities, talks, social events and day trips. Information on upcoming events is available on the shed’s Facebook page.

A new Killarney-based service is offering practical technology support to older residents who are struggling to keep up with the rapid pace of digital change.
Rebooted Kerry, operated by Matthew Osborne, works with seniors across the
county to help with everyday challenges such as using smartphones, tablets, laptops, passwords, online forms, scams, and even basic AI awareness. Osborne says many older people feel left behind as more services move online and tasks that once involved talking to a person now require navigating apps
and websites. Rebooted Kerry aims to close that gap with clear, patient and jargon-free help delivered at the user’s pace.
The service offers group visits to community centres, libraries, men’s and women’s sheds, and social clubs, as well as one-to-one home visits for those
needing extra support. Sessions focus on safety, confidence and helping people get the best out of devices they already own.
A 90-minute session costs €65 and includes printed guides. Rebooted Kerry can be contacted at 089 455 7310 or via www.rebootedkerry.ie.

It all started as a living room ‘ticket in book’ corner store in 1924 founded by Mary Hegarty, mother of Donal (Dodo) Hegarty at Larrys Cross, Muckross, in the house in which Dodo was born and reared.
It developed into a filling station and ancillary shop in the 1960’s and into 1990’s when Dodo and his family developed the first Spar on Muckross Road. Dodo passed the reins to his children, Majella, Liam, Donal and Adrian, the third Generation Hegarty family to run the business in 2022, instilling the im-
portance of community spirit and neighbourly friendship.
The 4th generation are already working in the store and lined up to step into help running the business to carry forward long into the future 101 years and beyond.
Kerry Football legend Seán O'Shea was on hand to help with the celebrations.
Donal (Dodo) had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon on the newly refurbished shop in the company of his daughter Majella, sons Liam, Donal, Adrian and daughter Majella along with their spouses and children at the weekend.

The programme, presented by Frank Lewis, airs this Saturday, November 29, from 9am to 11am, and will feature stories from the newly released 2024 edition along with interviews and reflections from long-time editor Donal Hickey, who has edited all 21 editions since the first journal appeared in 1982.
The programme, originally broadcast in November 2024, will revisit a range of articles of particular interest to listeners across East Kerry, North Cork and the wider Sliabh Luachra region.
Highlights from the 21st edition include Ben Brosnan documenting 29 shops operating in Kilcummin between 1909 and 1924. Only two remain today: O’Keeffe’s in Gattabawn (open since 1896) and the Kilcummin Post Office, run by the McCarthy/Healy family since 1946.
The grave of Ellie Buckley, born in Mountcain, Knocknagree in 1913, was located in Lewisham, London, 75 years after her death in 1942. Ellie nursed tuberculosis patients during wartime, when Irish nurses were described as “cannon fodder.”
Her story, written by her niece Eileen Fleming, features in the 2024 journal.
A piece by Christy Lehane recalls how more than £30,000 was taken out of Knocknagree by banks after fair days and how some cattle dealers attempted to cheat farmers. A mural of the fair now covers an entire gable wall in the village.
Button accordionist Bryan O’Leary contributes a personal reflection on musician Jimmy Doyle. The programme will include music associated with Doyle, including performances by his son Padraig and grandchildren Grace, Jack and Kaylie Doyle, along with Jamie O’Donoghue playing Doyle’s original accordion.
Johnny Barry recounts the 1961 East Kerry League match in which Gneeveguilla defeated Rathmore. He and Aenie O’Leary also reflect on Ambrose O’Donovan captaining Kerry to the All-Ireland title in 1984.
Hickey documents the history of the former Gneeveguilla National School, opened in 1842 and extended in 1889. After the building was demolished, a limestone plaque marked 1880 was recovered and placed on the wall of the house now on the site.

Sixteen members of Muckross Rowing Club travelled to the University of Limerick Arena last Saturday to compete in the Irish Provinces Indoor Rowing Championships.
The event drew a large entry from clubs across Ireland and overseas, providing strong competition throughout the programme.
Muckross recorded several standout performances, including two gold-medal wins.
Cara Spillane took first place in the Women’s Junior 15 five-minute event, covering 1,316 metres. She was the only athlete
in a 16-strong field to break the 1,300m mark.
Sean Tangney secured the club’s second gold medal with victory in the Men’s Lightweight 50–59 2km race.
In the Men’s Junior 13 events, Max Wesolowski finished second of 104 competitors in the 500m race. He also placed third of 78 in the three-minute sprint, recording 893 metres.
Other strong performances included: Orla Forde, fourth in a field of 43 in the Women’s Junior 14 four-minute event and Madeleine Lynch, fifth of 50 competitors in the Women’s Junior 13 three-minute sprint.

Rathmore and District Credit Union held its annual Art Competition Awards Night in the Killarney Heights Hotel last week, with a large attendance of students, families and teachers.
This year’s theme, “The Future Is”, produced a strong response from schools across the area, and entries were praised for their creativity and standard of work. Trophies were presented to the first, second and third placed artists in each
competition category, and an additional prize was awarded for the best piece in each age group across all schools.
All first-place winners now go forward to the Credit Union Chapter Awards in Tralee on Saturday, December 6.
The Credit Union thanked teachers and parents for their support and encouragement, noting the consistent high standard of entries each year. Thanks were also extended to Michelle Cooper Galvin for photography on the night.

My name is Luke Mangan. I am 16 years old and I attend Presentation Secondary School in Milltown. My favourite subject is English, and I have a passion for Shakespeare.

During the week I caught up with one of Kerry FC’s Day-one heroes. Killarney man Ryan Kelliher, has been at the club since its formation.
I asked him about his time with Kerry FC and as a youth. Here is how it went: Did you have a football idol growing up, is so who?
“My football idol when I was growing up was probably Wayne Rooney. I’m a Manchester United fan and at that time they were flying, and Rooney was someone I loved watching.”
You joined the Kerry FC academy in

early 2022, how did that feel?
“Yeah, it felt very good at that time it was good to get involved in the U19 League of Ireland set up and test myself to try and get involved then with the first team.”
When you were young, you began your career with Killarney Celtic. How do you believe they have helped you in your career?
“Yeah, Killarney Celtic have helped me a lot. I suppose I was lucky enough to have a very good team growing up and we were always progressing far in national competitions, and we also had some
great coaches as well to help me and the team progress.’”
What do you believe is the best way to motivate your team before a match?
“I suppose everyone probably has their own thing that motivates them before games not really as a team, but as an individual.”
Do you prefer to play as an attacking midfielder or a Centre forward?
“My favourite position would be Centre-forward definitely as I’ve been playing there all my life really, so I’m kind of used to it I suppose but I can play as an attack-

ing midfielder sometimes if needed.”
Describe how it felt to have been named on the PFA Ireland Team of the Year.
“It was a great feeling it was a very proud moment for me, and I was delighted I could represent the club in that honour.’ Is there any specific player’s playstyle you look up to?
“Not really to be fair, I just try and do my own thing and work on trying to get better at some of the other things I don’t do or maybe might be poor at.”
What do you believe Kerry FC can push for next year?
“I think Kerry can definitely push for playoff places next year and get to the top part of the table as the club is really advancing and has massive ambitions.”

Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore is celebrating a major success after students Eoin Cashman and Alex Thompson were named overall runners-up at the National SciFest finals held in Marino College, Dublin last week.
The pair also won the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Award and will now represent Ireland at the world finals in Phoenix, Arizona in 2026. Their project, titled Dust Dynamics: Analysing Planetary Bodies through the Ballistic Motion of Lofted Dust Particles, examined how the movement of dust can reveal key information about a planet’s environment, including atmospheric density and gravity. As part of their study, they analysed footage of dust thrown up by the Lunar Roving Vehicle during the Apollo 16 mission in 1972. Using on-
line software and physics calculations learned in school, they estimated the moon’s gravitational acceleration to 1.72 m/s, within 6.7% of the accepted value. The national finals featured projects assessed by judges from scientific and engineering fields. More than 16,000 students entered SciFest 2025, making the duo’s achievement a significant milestone. Their teacher Kevin McCarthy mentored the project, and the school says the students’ work could be applied to footage from other planetary missions in the future.

Killarney Community College (KCC) is celebrating after thirdyear student Ramana Alagappan received a Gold Award for his ‘Cybersafety Heroes’ project in the 2025 Adventures in Cyberland nationwide competition.
The competition is organised by UCD’s Centre for Cyber Resilience Education (CCRE) and is designed to recognise
students who use creativity and critical thinking to promote a safer and more responsible digital world.
Ramana's project, which was listed as Gold in the award category, addressed this year's competition theme: “Global Opportunities and Challenges in Cybersecurity".
Ramana has been invited to attend the Adventures in Cyberland Awards Day on December 11 at UCD in Dublin.

The HSE South West today announced the opening of Ireland’s first protected theatre resource dedicated solely to cancer prevention surgery for individuals identified as having a high genetic or clinical risk.
The new facility, opened on November 26 is one of only a handful of dedicated cancer-prevention theatre resources operating across Europe, marking a significant advancement for prevention-led care regionally and nationally.
The new initiative secures regular theatre time and beds for risk-reducing surgical procedures at South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH), in partnership with Cork University Hospital (CUH). Crucially, the theatre is designed to maximize utilization by being available for other specialties during unbooked sessions. This theatre forms the final, essential element of a comprehensive regional prevention programme that integrates several services. This pathway combines rapid genetic testing, specialist risk clinics, radiological surveillance, surgical and reconstructive expertise, and one-to-one psychological and specialist nursing support. The integrated risk pathway covers both breast and gynaecology specialisms, providing patients with a holistic range of options from surveillance to surgery.
Professor Mark Corrigan, Surgical On-

cologist at Cork University Hospital, highlighted the profound impact of the new facility. "This initiative matters because up to 40% of cancers are preventable; earlier identification and timely risk-reducing interventions will reduce cancer incidence, improve outcomes and spare families the concern of a cancer diagnosis for their loved ones," said Professor Corrigan. He further noted the economic benefits, stating that fewer cancers translate to fewer patients needing complex treatment, lower longterm costs, and resources being freed up for other critical health services. He announced that while Phases 1 and 2 focus on cancer, there are already plans
to broaden prevention beyond cancer, with a dedicated regional prevention facility set to open in 2027. Priscilla Lynch, HSE manager for Cork South and West, called the integrated prevention pathway a "proud milestone." “It gives people clear, timely options to reduce cancer risk and creates a model that can be adopted across Ireland and Europe,” Ms. Lynch said. This achievement has been driven by regional collaboration across clinical, academic, and community partners, including CUH’s genetics team, surgical oncology, breast, gynaecology, specialist nursing, psychology services, the CUH Charity, the Transforming Theatre Programme, and University College Cork.

New documentary film on the life of Daniel O’Connell
A new documentary film on the life and times of Daniel O’Connell, will be screened at Siamsa Tíre on December 10 to mark the 250th anniversary of his birth.
Presented by Kerry County Council and the Arts Office, the film, which is narrated by Domhnall Gleeson, forms part of a series of events to mark the milestone anniversary.
The screening of Daniel O’Connell: The Emancipator will incorporate musical performances in tribute to Kerry’s most famous son and will be followed a short panel discussion.
Tickets, available from the Siamsa Tíre Box Office, are €10 for adults and €5 for children, with proceeds going to Kerry Hospice and Tralee international Resource Centre.
The film, written and directed by multi-award-winning filmmaker, Ruán Magan, premiered to much acclaim at the Cork Film Festival and celebrates the life and times of a visionary statesman, reformer, and champion of human rights.
An Garda Síochána has launched a nationwide road-safety initiative aimed at improving visibility for pedestrians, cyclists, e-scooter users and motorcyclists.
The “Can You See Me Now?” campaign began on Wednesday with all Garda national and divisional social media channels turning neon yellow for 48 hours, creating a digital “high-vis takeover” to highlight the message.
The campaign comes amid a rising number of deaths among vulnerable road
users this year. Up to 25 November, 37 pedestrians, two e-scooter users and 29 motorcyclists have died on Irish roads. Fourteen cyclists have also lost their lives, with many incidents occurring during daytime hours and at weekends. Gardaí are urging motorists to check that all lights are working, use dipped headlights during the day in poor conditions, and maintain clear windscreens. Drivers are also being asked to give extra space to pedestrians, cyclists and other exposed road users, particularly on rural roads.

One of Ireland’s most beloved voices is being honoured in a very special way this Christmas.
TG4 and the Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) — the national public archive dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing Ireland’s traditional music and song — have teamed up to release Cartlann Christy Moore, a brand-new documentary that dives deep into the life, music and personal treasures of Christy Moore — now 80 years young. For over half a century, Christy’s songs have echoed across the world, telling the story of Ireland in all its glory and hardship. A singer, collector, storyteller and activist, his music has become part of the fabric of Irish life.
Earlier this year, Christy donated his entire personal collection to ITMA in Dublin. It’s a treasure trove of rare manuscripts, recordings, letters, setlists and lyrics — many never seen before. This archive offers a unique glimpse into the creative spirit and social conscience of a man who has inspired generations.
Directed by Ciarán Ó Maonaigh (Sé Mo Laoch, Farewell to Hughes’s), the documentary features fresh interviews with Christy himself, along with contributions from some of Ireland’s best-known artists. Expect stories, songs and insights that go far beyond the stage.
Speaking about the project, Christy said: “I love the idea of my songs being in the archive and some young person in Australia or America, Clare or Belfast, being able to go on a website and get the words and hear the tune and the melody and have the chords. Songs have a power within them to draw us in, affect us and cause us to go forward with laughter, or to shed a tear, or to stand up and be counted.”
ITMA CEO Liam O’Connor calls it “a tremendous honour” to safeguard Christy’s legacy and inspire future generations of songwriters.
Cartlann Christy Moore airs on TG4 at 10.10pm on New Year’s Eve, December 31 – the perfect way to ring in 2026 with one of Ireland’s greatest musical icons.
An unusual doping case in Norway has prompted fresh calls for stronger protections for athletes after traces of a banned stimulant were linked to an artificial pitch.
Norwegian club Vålerenga says current anti-doping rules need tightening following a seven-month investigation into how one of their women’s players tested positive for a prohibited substance earlier this year.
The player, who has remained anonymous, returned a routine sample that showed levels of DMBA, a stimulant
The importance of early reading for Ireland’s youngest residents was highlighted this week as Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, revealed encouraging new figures for the My Little Library initiative.
The Minister confirmed on Monday that almost 40,000 young children across Ireland have benefited from the scheme this year, with nearly 20,000 joining a library for the first time thanks to the programme.
The initiative sees every one of the 50,000 children leaving pre-school and starting primary school annually invited to visit their local public library to receive a free book bag and an opportunity to become a library member.
Speaking about the high levels of participation, Minister Foley stressed the
crucial role of the initiative in a child's educational journey.
"I am really proud to support the My Little Library initiative for children and their families and welcome the high levels of participation all around the country," Minister Foley said. "The gift of reading to and with children on a regular basis cannot be overestimated. It not only supports connection between parents and their children but also promotes early language and literacy development which is crucial for children’s success in their education journey."
Of the 40,000 children who have collected their bags so far, nearly 20,000 children have taken the key step of joining their local library as a new member this year. The initiative is funded by the Department of Children, Disability and Equality.

As the festive season begins, a new survey shows that one quarter of people in Ireland believe putting up a Christmas tree too early brings bad luck.
The findings reveal that 9% strongly agree with the superstition, while 16% somewhat agree. Almost half of respondents disagreed, with 30% strongly disa-
banned in sport. Three teammates and four opposition players also showed low traces. With no shared supplements or food sources, officials launched an environmental inquiry, eventually discovering the chemical originated from rubber crumb on the synthetic surface where the match was played.
Anti-Doping Norway ruled the player bore no fault, and the World Anti-Doping Agency has chosen not to appeal. The case has raised concerns about the potential for contamination on artificial pitches across Europe.
greeing and 18% somewhat disagreeing. Another 28% neither agreed nor disagreed.
While tradition suggests decorations should go up on the first Sunday of Advent, many households are now choosing to decorate earlier, sparking debate about whether it breaks custom or invites misfortune.

The annual Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal has concluded another successful campaign in the Killarney area, thanks to the generosity of local children, schools, and families.
The final deadline for the appeal, November 10, has passed, and coordinators are now preparing the thousands of gift-filled shoeboxes for shipment. The initiative sends these boxes to vulnerable children in Africa and Eastern Europe, many of whom will receive the shoebox as their only gift this Christmas.
Local coordinator Sheila Rice praised the community's response, especially the
children who participated. "Every shoebox makes a difference," said Sheila. "It’s a simple gesture that brings immense joy to a child in need."
The boxes, filled with small gifts such as toys, school supplies, hygiene items, and sweets, are a physical expression of goodwill from the people of Killarney. Since the appeal began in 2010, Irish communities have sent over 2.8 million shoebox gifts through Team Hope to children living in poverty.
Our pictures captured some of the generous local children whose efforts ensure that those less well-off can also have a Happy Christmas this year.

Aherns BMW in Castleisland will be the place to be on Friday as three BMW M3 E30s taking part in the Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally are unveiled for the first time.
Fans will get their first look at the number two–seeded car of Kris Meeke and Noel O’Sullivan, built by MATS Performance with Mats himself attending the event for a Q&A session. The unveiling will take place in the Aherns showroom between 3 and 4 pm sharp on Friday.
Meeke and O’Sullivan will appear alongside last year’s winners and number one seed Donagh Kelly and Rory Kennedy in another Mats M3.
Also being revealed is the MATS-built entry of drifting star Conor Shanahan and co-driver Andy Hayes which is the car Craig Breen won the Rally with in 2021. Members of the public are welcome to attend the showcase, with further BMWs
competing in the event also expected to be on display outside the dealership. Up to 12 examples of the iconic M3 are set to appear in Killarney over the weekend, marking one of the largest ever undertakings by the Netherlands-based MATS team.
Paul Ahern said he is looking forward to hosting the gathering and unveiling the cars:
“This is will be a great event and thanks to all the crews for making the effort to come on what is a very busy day for them and a proud day for Aherns BMW. We are delighted to welcome rally fans and supporters to the showroom for this special event and to have my good friend Kris competing on my home rally in a BMW M3 in our special livery 35 years after Bertie Fisher won in the M3 will be special. Ahern himself, along with co-driver Kieran Murphy, will also compete in another MATS Performance version of the famous M3.

Local ace Rob Duggan will switch from the Modified category into the Historic field for this weekend’s Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally.
The Killarney driver is the defending Modified champion, but an opportunity too good to pass up has landed on his lap. Thanks to Meirion Evans and the Wales Motorsport team, Duggan will step back into a Ford Escort for his first Historic outing since 2019.
Duggan has form in the Historic ranks. In 2019 he won the rally outright, defeating the late Craig Breen, who at the time was a works world rally driver and reigning Irish champion. Duggan is joined by long-time co-driver Ger Conway, and the local hero will line up against some of the strongest international and Irish Historic entries ever assembled for the rally. Duggan explained that the deal came together after a conversation at the Rally of the Lakes prizegiving, when the opportunity to drive one of Evans’ Escorts arose.
“I am feeling good and looking forward to the change of machinery. The opportunity came up at the prize-giving of the Lakes when Meirion asked if I would have interest in going in one of his cars again and of course, after the success we had last time out, I jumped at the opportunity,” said Duggan.
“It will be a big change, but I am looking forward to the challenge. A lot of quick drivers in some fantastic machinery so it is looking like it will be a good weekend. If it goes as well as 2019 when we raced Craig, I am sure it will be.”

The headline name for many fans is World Rally Championship star Kris Meeke, who makes a one-off appearance in a BMW M3 E30 run by MATS Performance in the Netherlands.
It is Meeke’s first competitive rally appearance in Ireland since 2009, and his inclusion has generated worldwide attention. The Tyrone driver has spent this season in Portugal, winning five rallies in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, and arrives in Killarney in top form.
The rally carries extra meaning for Meeke. It serves as a tribute to Maurice Nagle, founder of the event in 1996 and father of his former WRC co-driver Paul. Meeke and Nagle took five WRC wins together,

gory win in Belgium recently.
There are more local hopes in the form of Fergus O’Meara and Brian Duggan, while Waterford’s Ray Breen lines up in a Subaru Legacy RS.
Down the order, Cork driver and former Rally of the Lakes winner Daragh O’Riordan adds further spice by debuting a Ford Escort Cosworth WRC.
Another Cork driver, Denis Moynihan, brings still more proven Escort pace, while Neil Williams and John Falvey represent yet another Wales-Kerry combination in an RS1800.
The M3 count continues to grow with drifting star Conor Shanahan, who makes his debut in BMW machinery.
While the headline names in the Historic category are drawing national attention, the Modified section of the Killarney Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally is shaping up to be just as competitive, with a large number of local crews taking part.
Killarney’s Colin and Kieran O’Donoghue won the Acesigns Heartlands Rally in their Ford Escort Mk2 and are the top seeds for the event.
Conor Murphy and Sean Collins are back in action for the first time in twelve months in their Ford Escort
and during their time as a pairing Meeke forged a close friendship with Maurice, whose dream was always to see the world’s best drivers in the finest Historic machinery on Kerry’s iconic stages. That dream is very much alive this weekend. Meeke’s presence alone would be big enough news, but he will not be the only international star taking the fight to Kerry.
European rally legend Patrick Snijers has entered in another BMW M3 E30, prepared by Cork specialists Fionnsport Automotive Technology. Snijers is a seven-time Belgian champion and 1994 European Rally Champion with 44 European Championship wins.
Donagh Kelly and Rory Kennedy, the defending champions, return in their BMW M3 and start as first seeds. It is also a special milestone as it is 35 years since Kennedy’s first Killarney win alongside the great Bertie Fisher.
Alan Ring has generated huge attention with the debut of his stunning Group A Subaru Impreza 555. Changes to Historic eligibility have opened the door for more late-Group A machinery, and Clerk of the Course Anthony O’Connor has confirmed that the new rules have “shifted the whole dynamic of the event.”
The Munster Joinery-backed Subaru is one of only a handful of correct-spec examples in existence, and Ring will be looking to put down a marker on home ground.
John O’Donnell and Paddy Robinson arrive as newly crowned Irish Tarmac champions, Last year’s runners-up Tomas Davies and local co-driver Shane Buckley are back in their newly acquired BMW and arrive in Killarney after a historic cate-
Denis Hickey and Eoin O’Leary recorded a top-15 finish on the Fastnet Rally in West Cork, while Dave Slattery and Denis Coffey have been scoring consistently in both the National and West Coast championships.
Kevin O’Donoghue and John McElhinney only confirmed their BMW E30 entry late and will be hoping the alternator issue that struck in Fastnet is behind them. Raymond O’Neill and Jason O’Connor have also rebuilt their Escort after an incident on the same event.
Kenmare’s Shane McCarthy and Eamonn Creedon compete in their Honda EG6. The pair are among several local crews targeting the new Carrick Cup in 2025, introduced in memory of Mike Gaine. Adrian Randles and Denny Greaney, along with Brian Hickey and Mark Horgan, further strengthen the Kenmare presence. There are also long-serving Killarney Motor Club members on the entry, such as Cyril Wharton and Donal Falvey, and club chair Tommy Randles, who also represents Kenmare and who teams up with Darragh Lynch. Randles could be making a final competitive appearance, though that remains unconfirmed.
Noel O’Sullivan and Nicholas Burke may be the only crew to have taken part in every Killarney Historic Rally since the event began in 1996.
Gerard and Sinéad Stack will start Gerard’s first rally in 21 years, the last being the 2004 Killarney Historic Rally. Gary Healy and Niall Myers switch from a Honda Civic to a Toyota Twin Cam 20V, while Seán Hickey and Noel Fleming, who were third in class at the Rally of the Lakes, start only their second outing of the season.
Tom and Mark O’Sullivan bring their father-and-son Peugeot 205 partnership.

The Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) has hailed the result of the criminal case taken against Mr Constantin Iosca after he was found guilty in the Courts.
Mr Iosca was convicted after being charged with deception under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001.
The case was taken after Mr Iosca withdrew a personal injury claim he had made against the MIBI after it had begun being heard by the High Court in January 2020.
During the course of that hearing, the MIBI was able to present the court with video evidence which contradicted Mr Iosca’s claim that he required a wheelchair and crutches.
In that video footage presented to the High Court in January 2020, Mr Iosca is
shown:
Walking out to a car and preparing it for his upcoming journey into town.
Removing crutches from plastic wrapping.
Picking the wheelchair up and placing it in the boot of the car.
Upon his arrival in Dublin city centre, getting into the wheelchair and then being wheeled to the building where his medical appointment is taking place. Using the crutches to climb the steps into the building.
A short time after the medical appointment he is seen in another part of Dublin city centre walking unaided.
After returning to his home, he lifts the wheelchair and crutches out of the car and brings them into the house.
After Mr Iosca withdrew his personal injury claim in the High Court in 2020, costs were awarded to the MIBI.
“This is a good day for justice and a bad day for insurance fraud,” said David Fitzgerald, CEO of the MIBI. “Anyone who makes an illegitimate claim should have to pay the consequences. Fraudulent activity harms all law abiding road users. It puts people’s safety at risk and adds to the cost of insurance. The MIBI estimate that as many as 1 in 8 claims we receive can be categorised as suspicious.
“That is why we are committed to putting any suspicious claims to the test. When a claim does not add up we are prepared to mount a comprehensive

Two Ukrainian IT professionals, Sergiy and Yaroslav, who found refuge in the county after fleeing the war, have now launched a local venture.
AIMediaflow is dedicated to helping small and medium-sized Kerry businesses thrive through accessible artificial intelligence (AI).
Sergiy, a programmer with 30 years of experience, and Yaroslav, an IT Support Engineer at Temmler Ireland in Killorglin, met at the Killarney VTOS educational centre. Their shared passion for technology and a desire to give back to their new community sparked an innovative partnership.
After settling in Kerry, the two men spoke with local hoteliers, restaurant managers, and artisans, realising many were overwhelmed by repetitive, time-consuming tasks. "We saw an opportunity to help," Yaroslav explains. "Our goal became to make the advanced AI used by big corporations simple, accessible, and truly

AIMediaflow is dedicated to solving these everyday challenges. They have developed practical tools, such as intelligent assistants that can answer phone calls and book appointments 24/7, ensuring local guesthouses never miss a potential booking. They also build smart chatbots to instantly answer customer questions
on a shop's website, freeing up staff time.
"It's about empowering them," Sergiy adds. "We create tools that handle the tedious work, so owners can focus on what they love, improving their services, innovating, and connecting with their customers."
The venture also offers solutions to automate paperwork, seamlessly connect-
ing website forms to invoicing systems, and provides tools to create professional marketing videos. Sergiy and Yaroslav's work is a quiet reminder that technological innovation is being built right here in Kerry, by newcomers contributing their skills and passion to the community that welcomed them.

What is the Carer's Support Grant?
The Carer’s Support Grant is paid to eligible carers once a year by the Department of Social Protection (DSP) on the first Thursday in June. You can use the grant in whatever way you like. You can use it to pay for respite care, but you don't have to. The Carer’s Support Grant is not a means-tested payment. If you are caring for more than one person, a grant is paid for each person you care for. It is not taxable. In 2025, the Carer's Support Grant will be €2,000.
When is it paid?
In June of each year (usually on the first Thursday of the month). This year it will be paid on 5 June 2025.
Who is eligible to get the Carer's Support Grant?
To qualify you must be:
• Aged 16 or over
• Ordinarily resident in Ireland
• Caring for the person on a full-time basis
• Caring for the person for at least 6 months (this 6-month period must include the first Thursday in June)
• Living with the person being cared for (or if you don't live with them, you must meet certain criteria - for example, the person must be able to contact you quickly and directly)
When you are caring, you cannot work or study for more than 18.5 hours per week. Neither can you get Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit or sign on for credited contributions.
How do you apply?
If you are getting Carer's Allowance, Carer's Benefit or Domiciliary Care Allowance, you do not need to apply for the Carer's Support Grant. You will automatically get it in June.
If you are not getting one of the above payments, you should fill in a Carer's Support Grant application form (CSG1) for each person you are caring for. You can download the application form or get it from your local Social Welfare Office or Citizens Information Centre
When should I apply?
You can apply for a Carer's Support Grant for any given year from April of that year until 31 December of the following year.
If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

In loving memory of Michael and Catherine Casey their daughter Catherine Casey and their son Joe Casey late of Rossmore, Firies.
We think of you in silence
We often speak your names
But all we have are memories
And the picture in a frame.
Your resting place we visit Flowers we put with care
But no one knows the heartache
As we turn and leave you there.
Sadly missed and always loved and remembered by Rita, Francis and family, and extended family.

In loving memory of Michael and Catherine Casey their daughter Catherine Casey and their son Joe Casey late of Rossmore, Firies.
Deep in our hearts your memory is kept
To love and cherish and never forget
Happy memories keep forever
Of days when we were all together.
Each of us in our own way
Have special thoughts of you today Time goes by, life goes on But from our thoughts you are never gone.
Sadly missed and always loved and remembered by Timmy (TC) Casey.
O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication. LF

In loving memory of Michael and Catherine Casey their daughter Catherine Casey and their son Joe Casey late of Rossmore, Firies.
You left the world so quickly
We still wonder why
For the saddest part of all
You never said goodbye.
You gave us all you had to give
Gifts both big and small
But most of all you gave us love
The greatest gift of all.
Sadly missed and loved by Eileen, Jerry and family, and extended family.
Remember O Most Gracious Virgin Mary
That never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection implored thy help or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired y this confidence I fly to Thee O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother, to Thee I come before Thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the world incarnate, despise not my petitions but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. AF

In loving memory of Donal O’Grady late of Maple Drive and Ardshanvooly, Killarney who passed away on 30th November 2024.
In Killarney’s heart his spirit lies, Beneath the soft and Irish skies. A kindly man, both true and fair, Who found his joy in all found there.
He loved his town, its folk, its song, The fireside tales the whole night long With cup of tea and laughter near, He blessed each soul that gathered here.
He loved the fields, the Kerry cheer, The horses proud, the bustling fair At Christmas time, his eyes would glow, Among the blooms he loved to sow.
Though now he rests, his light remains, In Killarney’s streets, in gentle rains Forever loved, forever near God bless you, Donal, ever dear.
Lovingly remembered by your heartbroken wife Mary, Sean, Krzysztof and Pati.

No one can fill the space you made.
So here’s to you, remembered well In stories that we’ll always tell
Phil dear friend and colleague true We’ll pause today to honour you.

Words cannot express the depth of our loss since Mary left us. She was the heart of our family and her absence has created a space that can never be filled. We wish we had one more moment to see her gentle smile and to share a laugh with her again, even for a little while.
And though we are full of sadness that she is no longer here, her influence still guides us and we still feel her near. What we shared will never die. It lives within our hearts, bringing strength and comfort while we are apart.
Gone too soon but never forgotten. She remains our guiding light and our shining star, held close in our hearts until we meet again.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. RF
Mother of Divine Grace, you can find a way, where there is no way. Please hear my prayer and grant me my request. (Say 6 times daily & your request will be granted).
PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH OF CUPERTINO FOR SUCCESS IN EXAMINATIONS
First Prayer: O Great St. Joseph of Cupertino who while on earth did obtain from God the grace to be asked at your examination only the questions you knew, obtain for me a like favour in the examinations for which I am now preparing. In return I promise to make you known and cause you to be invoked. Through Christ our Lord. St. Joseph of Cupertino, Pray for us. Amen. MOD
O Saint Martha, I resort to thee and thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays.
Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour).
Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at they feet.
One Our Father and three Hail Marys and a lighted candle every Tuesday, and the above prayer made known with the intention of spreading devotion to St. Martha. Never known to fail. MOD
He was there, a firm foundation
Through all our storms of life
A sturdy hand to hold on to
In times of stress and strife.
A true friend we could turn to
When times were good or bad
One of our greatest blessings
The man that we called Dad.
Dad you are loved and remembered always by your daughters Margaret and Annette, grandson Daniel, and son-in-law Owen. xxxx

Mother God looked around his garden and saw an empty space He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you and raised you up to rest His garden must be beautiful, because he only takes the best.
He knew you were in pain and that a cure was not to be So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered “come to me”.
With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away, And though we loved you dearly, we knew you could not stay.
It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you on the day God called you home.

Kerry FC’s all-time leading scorer Ryan Kelliher has committed his immediate future to his home club by signing a new multi-year deal ahead of the 2026 League of Ireland campaign.
The Killarney man missed most of the 2025 season after sustaining an ACL injury against UCD in April but the club say he is making good progress. It is hoped that he will return to action “sooner rather than later”.
The 24-year-old has been one of the standout performers since joining from Killarney Celtic for the club’s inaugural season in 2023. He has donned the Kerry jersey on 81 occasions, scoring 32 goals.
He started the 2025 First Division season in fine form, netting three goals in eight games, before injury cruelly intervened.
“I’m delighted to have signed for the upcoming season,” Kelliher said. “Last season was a big disappointment for me after the injury I got, but I have been working really hard since, and I can’t wait to be back out playing and scoring goals in front of all the fans in Mounthawk Park in 2026.”

Kerry FC manager Colin Healy also welcomed the news. “Ryan was injured before I arrived so I haven’t had the opportunity to work with him on the field yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing him in our sessions again soon. His numbers speak for themselves: a proven goal scorer and a threat in front of the goal. His loss last year was evident, and we know how dangerous a fully fit Ryan Kelliher can be up front for us.
“A small bit more patience is needed with his recovery, but I can tell he is hungry to score more goals once he is back up and running again.”
Consistent left back Seán O’Connell joins Kelliher in committing his immediate future to the Tralee-based club. Kerry have also confirmed the signing of former Cork City and Cobh Ramblers forward Cian Murphy on a pre-contract agreement. Meanwhile, homegrown talent Ronan Teahan could be on his way out of the club. According to reports, the highly-rated midfielder is expected to complete his transfer to newly-promoted Premier Division club Dundalk.
I can’t wait to be back out playing and scoring goals in front of the fans.
RYAN KELLIHER

Kerry FC’s hard-working players, officers and volunteers joined loyal supporters to celebrate a historic year for the club at a Celebration Night, which took place in the Rose Hotel in Tralee last weekend.
With over 200 guests in attendance, it was a fantastic evening as the League of Ireland outfit celebrated a record-breaking season both on and off the field. Kerry won their first piece of League of Ireland silverware with victory in the EA Sports LOI Academy U20 Shield competition, while the U15s and U14s brought home winners’ trophies from the London Pro-Elite Cups on the August Bank Holiday weekend. All three trophies were proudly on display in front of the stage on the night.
It was also a season to remember for
the Kerry FC seniors who recorded their highest league finish with a record points total, all while reaching the last four of the Sports Direct Men’s FAI Cup.
The night was MC’d by club media officer and Radio Kerry presenter Ivan Hurley, who kept the crowd entertained throughout the evening.
The club’s special merit award was presented to the Tralee Gladiators Football
For All team, who joined forces with Kerry FC in the off-season. They instantly became part of the Kerry FC community in Mounthawk Park and the group has been growing from strength the strength ever since.
Among the award winners on the night were Ronan Teahan, who was voted as the Supporters’ Player of the Season, and Niall Brookwell, who won the 2025 Senior Player of the Season.

WOMEN’S SUPER LEAGUE
Utility Trust St Paul’s v Killester
Saturday 4pm
Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre
Arguably the two best teams in the country will go head-to-head in Killarney on Saturday as Utility Trust St Paul’s host Killester in the Women’s Super League. Tip-off at Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre is at 4pm.
Paul’s bounced back from their cup heartbreak with an impressive 81-68
win over Flomax Liffey Celtics last weekend and with league leaders Killester finally losing their unbeaten record, the stage is set for an appetising clash between two potential champions.
Tara Cousins and Maisie Burnham played key roles for James Fleming’s side in that victory against the Celtics as the pair combined for over 50 points, but it would be remiss to overlook the contributions of Lorraine Scanlon, Síofra O’Shea, Lovisa Hevinder and Leah McMahon, all of whom excelled.
The Kerry women will be hoping for more of the same on Saturday in front of a boisterous home crowd in Killarney.

MEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 1
Utility Trust St Paul’s Lakers v Killarney Cougars
Saturday 7.30pm
Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre
Elsewhere, the St Paul’s Lakers had a big win in their Men’s Division 1 clash against the Carrick Cruisers last Saturday, especially considering their injury list on the day.
Rui Saraiva, Pablo Murcia and Jack O’Sullivan all missed out on the 10-hour round trip but Darragh O’Callaghan, Cathal Spring and Cillian O’Leary stepped in and played their part to help secure their side’s fourth win of the season. The final score read Cruiser 95 Lakers 102.
Next up is a keenly anticipated derby against their crosstown rivals, the Killarney Cougars. The Cougars currently have a 1-7 record following recent defeats at the hands of Maree (95-101) and Templeogue (110-105), so they will be hoping to really kickstart their season with a performance and a W against their near neighbours.
The game, which takes place in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre, begins at 7.30pm.

In the final part of his series on GAA demographics, Eamonn Fitzgerald plots the future for both urban and rural clubs
This is Part 3 and the last in a series of article in which I predict that within a decade there will only be sufficient GAA players available in Killarney Parish to field two U14 boys’ teams. One of the three parish teams, Dr Crokes, Legion and Spa, will face the challenge that they may have to amalgamate to participate in this competition.
The timing of the U16 East Kerry football final played last weekend was purely coincidental. Listry defeated Kilcummin 2-21 to 3-11 in a thrilling game. Dr Crokes, Legion and Spa did not make it to the final of a competition dominated by the Killarney teams for many years. Congratulations to Firies and Kilcummin. They will recall all the years when the Killarney Parish teams dominated while rural clubs were at their wit’s end to field a team. Now the shoe is on the other foot, and the Killarney Parish teams are feeling the pinch, a growing pinch with little chance of a release in the next decade.
Of course, situations change, but in the meantime the GAA clubs in the satellite new-homes areas of Firies, Milltown, Kilcummin, Fossa and Glenflesk will have increased
their juvenile playing numbers. As outlined last week, the cost of housing in Killarney is prohibitive for most young couples. Also the National Park will not have houses built, for very valid reasons. The GAA is founded on the concept of a parish and the love of parishioners for their local club. The townland is the basic unit in defining an area and a parish contains several townlands. In the dim, distant past Kilcummin Parish was much larger than it is today, stretching eastwards to include Stagmount and Rathmore. Natural physical features such as rivers separated townlands and parishes.
A good example is right here in Killarney. Going southwest out of Killarney town, once you cross over the Deenagh River at Ballydowney roundabout, the Killarney Parish extends to the Castlerosse Hotel on the left side only. All the areas on the right-hand side from Ballydowney bridge are in the Fossa parish. There are other similar conundrums in the Killarney area.
As outlined in Part 2, the enrolments in the Killarney Parish schools are very healthy indeed. Closer scrutiny of the composition shows that a very significant percentage of boys ages 5-18 are the New Irish and my contention is that the GAA is losing out heavily for underage players while other sports, particularly soccer and basketball, are grappling with increased numbers and the challenge of having sufficient pitches/halls to cater for the influx. Killarney Celtic have the playing areas and Killarney Athletic, Killarney’s oldest soccer club, will be developing more playing areas from the adjoining Cricket Field, once the bastion of cricket and Gaelic football. Yes, that was where football was played until the Fitzgerald Stadium was officially opened in 1937. (Congrats to KA on celebrating their 60th in style recently.)
The GAA has appointed Demographic

Officers at national level (Benny Hurl), in Munster (Joe Crowley) and in Kerry (Michael Murphy). Their work has been very helpful in providing well-researched data and reports.
The Kerry Demographics report shows tha: ‘Kerry GAA has 71 clubs, of which 55 play football only at adult level, 10 play hurling only, and six are dual clubs. These clubs have 11,441 youth members (i.e. in the 5-18 cohort). That includes playing and non-playing youth members so it is not fully reflective of the available players in that cohort which would be less, e.g. girls aged between 12 and 18). While the overall population is projected to continue to increase, the younger cohorts are projected to decrease in Kerry. Those are very significant findings.
THE PARISH RULE
Rule 20 (the Parish Rule) states that a player must play for a GAA club in the parish where he/she lives, but in reality, it isn’t a rule by GAA authorities, but a bylaw intended originally to save small rural clubs from losing players to the bigger and usually urbanised clubs.
It is adopted by individual counties that wish to operate it, including Kerry and Kilkenny. In Kerry's case, the Parish Rule outlines the terms of player eligibility for playing with a club. In most cases, the civil parish boundaries of Kerry coincide with the church parishes.
The Kerry Demographic report quotes the 2022 census in putting the population of Kerry at 156,458. This was an increase of 6% on the last census in 2016 when the population stood at 147,707. Indeed, the population has increased in each census since 1991. However, the increase has been more modest than the national figure of 8% and most significantly for the GAA in Kerry, the cohort of the population under the age of 10 has actually decreased in the last two censuses. The average age of Kerry’s population in April 2022 was 41.5 years, compared with 40.2 years in April 2016. Nationally, the average age of the population was 38.8, up from 37.4 in April 2016.
In 2011 the portion of the population in Kerry under the age of 10 was 21,454. In 2022 this portion of the population in Kerry stood at 19,991.
Kerry ranks as the second oldest county in Ireland. According to data on Munster counties and their projected cohort of 6-11 years (Go Games ages), Kerry will have 74% of the 6-to-11-year-olds in 2040 that it had in 2022, while Cork will have 91% and Limerick 105%.

The biggest demographic challenge facing clubs in Killarney is attracting a sufficient cohort of children from both Irish and New Irish families.
Tralee and Killarney are the two main centres of population in Kerry with Listowel, Kenmare, Castleisland and Killorglin the next largest towns. Looking at headline figures for populations in towns and villages doesn’t give a complete picture for GAA purposes. For instance, the towns of Dingle and Cahersiveen have a much older age profile than Milltown. Similarly, Firies (573), Waterville (555) and Tarbert (546) have similar total population figures but the average age in Tarbert is 46 while the average age in Firies is just 32. It is important to note when looking at these figures that they do not represent the entire catchment area of any club but rather the built-up area of the town or village.
The findings of the Kerry GAA Demographics Report on the Killarney Parish are revealing. The Killarney club catchment area is relatively hemmed in, particularly with the National Park on one side. The main growth areas in the future will be in hous-

ing developments in and close to the town itself. Some of these have already been built such as Cronin’s Wood (249 homes) and some have received planning but haven’t been developed such as a 224-unit development between Port Road and St. Margarets Road. However, 29% of the planning applications in Killarney were rejected in the period August 2022 to August 2024. That is the highest % of refusals in Kerry. Who will occupy these homes? How many parents with both working and having young children, will be able to afford the high prices? Furthermore, with a national average of 1.8 children per family, the cohort of juvenile boys available for U14 competition will decrease. Again, I stress this concept relates to boys only: the development of increasing number of girls playing GAA is a welcome trend but does not ease the challenge for the three Killarney Parish teams in the foreseeable future.
The biggest demographic challenge facing clubs in Killarney is in attracting and
retaining a sufficient cohort of children from both Irish and New Irish families in an urban setting. In rural areas families naturally gravitate towards the GAA club as the sporting outlet of choice. This is not a given in urban areas particularly with the diversity of sporting choice in the town and the diversity in the make up of the population of the town. Attracting children from a very young age is key so as to give them the best chance of developing the skills needed to make progress and developing their affinity with the GAA.
BENNY HURL
Benny Hurl, the national GAA Demographics Officer, says that when GAA people speak about the impact of demographics in the GAA, they usually assume that the issues are all rural ones. However, with the vast majority of people (about two thirds) now living in urban Ireland, Benny is adamant that clubs in the towns and the cities will for various reasons be faced with massive challenges which the GAA have so far not addressed in full or at all.
He goes on to say that the big positive is that with the appointment of Demographics Officers in every county, the issues affecting clubs are being written and talked about like never before. On a local level, Benny was fulsome in his praise for the Kerry Demographics Officer, Knocknagoshel's Michael Murphy, and Kerry GAA's vice chairperson, Liam Lynch (Austin Stacks), who is a very valued member of the National GAA Demographics Committee in Croke Park.
“Kerry GAA are very lucky to have people like Michael Murphy and Liam Lynch representing them nationally,” Benny says. “Both are hugely invested in trying to resolve the demographic challenges in Kerry and it's safe to say that Kerry as a county are better placed when it comes to demographics."
Niall O’Callaghan MCC is a great supporter of all sports and is an active member of Killarney Celtic, Dr Crokes and St Paul’s. I spoke with him earlier this week and he said: “It’s certainly a worrying trend to see town teams struggle for numbers and it will continue as young families are struggling to buy houses in the town environment. Hopefully if the housing crisis eases in the future – maybe the costs will come down”.
And so ends this three-part series on the impact of demographic trends on the future of GAA juveniles (boys) on Dr Crokes, Legion and Spa.
All-Stars Síofra O’Shea and David Clifford were on hand at Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium to help launch the new home jersey that will be worn by the Kerry LGFA, Kerry GAA and Kerry Camogie teams for the 2026 season.
The new O’Neills-manufactured shirt

has one major distinction from previous iterations of the famous green and gold geansaí in that the gold is actually gold, rather than the traditional yellow. The classy design also features slightly modified versions of the Kerry GAA and LGFA crests as the hues have been tweaked to match the colours of the kit.
The men will wear the standard white shorts (this time with green trim at the hem) while the ladies will wear green shorts with white and gold trim, a departure from the previous ladies’ shorts which were black.
The new gear, which can be purchased at the Kerry GAA Store in the Killarney Out-
let Centre, is already proving to be a hit with supporters.
Kerry’s male footballers are likely to wear the jersey for the first time, at least in an official capacity, in the 2026 McGrath Cup. Jack O’Connor’s All-Ireland champions are away to Waterford on January 6 and at home to Clare on January 11. The winners of Group A (Kerry’s group) will play the winners of Group B (Cork, Limerick and Tipperary) on January 17.

U14 BOYS DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 1 Mastergeeha A 4. Goal: Cillian Sheahan. U13 GIRLS PREMIER LEAGUE: Tralee Park 1–0 Killarney Athletic A. Killarney Athletic A travelled to face league leaders Tralee Park today, a side unbeaten so far this season. Despite the challenge ahead, our girls delivered a performance full of determination, teamwork, and heart. Leading them out as captain for the day was Caitlin Hickey, who set the tone with strong communication and relentless work rate. From the opening whistle, Killarney Athletic showed no fear, creating several promising chances and testing the Parks defence. Our midfield moved the ball with confidence, and the forwards found pockets of space to get shots away. At the right back, Lily Duggan produced one of the standout moments of the half—making a superb last-ditch clearance to deny what looked like a certain Park goal. Alongside the three other defenders, Lily helped maintain excellent shape and ensured that Park’s usually free-scoring attack found little room to operate. The team pushed out well, communicated effectively, and contributed hugely to keeping the game scoreless at the break. Anna Lyne on the left back also had a great game, attacking from deep when called upon. The second half began with increased pressure from Tralee Park, but our defence continued to dig deep. Unfortunately, in a moment of misfortune, Lily Duggan—who had been outstanding throughout—was unlucky to see her attempted clearance deflect into her own net. She had read the danger perfectly, made the run to cover and made the right decision to challenge the ball, but the bounce favoured the Park, putting them 1–0 ahead. Despite the setback, Killarney Athletic responded brilliantly. The girls pushed forward with intent, creating several chances as they searched for the equaliser. The team showed grit, passing confidently and working tirelessly to break down a very compact Park defence. Tralee Park continued to threaten on the counter, but our defence stood firm to keep the gap at one. Even with late pressure and a few promising attacks, we couldn’t quite find that final breakthrough. Though the result went the way of the league leaders, the performance from our girls was exceptional. They matched Tralee Park for long stretches, showed excellent teamwork, and demonstrated the progress they continue to make week after week. Plenty of positives to take into the next match—well done, girls! Player of the Match: Lily Duggan. Despite the unfortunate own goal—one that came only because she was bravely attempting to stop a certain scoring opportunity—Lily is fully deserving of the Player of the Match
award. Her effort, work rate, and passion throughout the entire game was exceptional. Thanks to The Park and referee Kevin for a good sporting game.

U13 GIRL’S PREMIER: Mastergeeha 5 MEK 1. This game was far tighter than the final score line suggests. Mastergeeha got off to a strong start when Gracie Maher opened the scoring with the first of yet another hat-trick. MEK hit back immediately with an equaliser, and from there both teams created plenty of chances. Up front, Gracie Maher, Lucy Devane, and Melissa O’Leary all came close, but the MEK defence stood firm. At the other end, MEK also threatened regularly, with Sophie Moynihan pulling off several excellent saves. Lily O'Donoghue, Laura Breen, and Clodagh O'Sullivan were kept extremely busy in defence throughout the half. Finally, in the 28th minute, Gracie showed her class again, taking on three defenders before finishing superbly to make it 2–1 at halftime. Mastergeeha started the second half strongly. Laura Breen pushed further up the field, causing problems and coming close to scoring, while Aine Herlihy was also unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. The pressure eventually paid off when Caoimhe Darmody made it 3–1 with a brilliant run and a calm finish. In midfield, Melissa O’Leary, Faye O’Connor, and Emer O'Connor worked tirelessly throughout the game. And of course, Gracie Maher wasn’t leaving without her hat-trick — a powerful run and clinical finish to make it 4 - 1. Shortly after, Annie Mai O’Donoghue struck from outside the box with a superb effort that left the MEK keeper with no chance, and sealing the win. Despite the result, MEK pushed us all the way and put us under pressure for large periods of the game. A huge thanks to John Ross for his encouraging words to the girls, and to MEK for a very sporting match.
U15 GIRLS DIVISION 1: Dingle 2 Mastergeeha 1.
U12 BOYS NATIONAL TROPHY ROUND
3: Newmarket Celtic 5 Mastergeeha B 0. U12 BOYS DIVISION 2: Mastergeeha C 2 Park C 1. Mastergeeha U12 C Team played Park C at home on Saturday morning. Mastergeeha created the first chance of the game following a good run and cross by Micheal O’Connor. Park took the lead on 10 minutes with a smart finish. Mastergeeha had our keeper, Charlie Lenihan, to thank for keeping the deficit to one goal at half time. Half time subs, Jamie Scanlon, Conor Doyle and Maitiu O’Morain helped to inspire a second half comeback. Despite dominating possession and territory Mastergeeha were again grateful to our keeper Charlie for making some good saves following quick counter attacks by the Park. Following a sustained period of pressure on the Park goal, Finn Murphy won the ball back,
found Dara Reen who crossed for Jamie Scanlon to score the equaliser, with 10 minutes to play. Mastergeeha kept pushing and were rewarded in the final minutes when Finn Murphy converted from a corner by Jack Lucey.

O’SULLIVAN CUP: Fossa and Listry played a very entertaining semi final on Sunday in Gortroe. The opening exchanges were even enough with the sides swapping scores, Kevin McCarthy and Eoin Talbot getting the first two scores for Fossa. With Ruari Doyle going through a tremendous amount of work, it allowed the home side to stretch the lead
to two points with scores from Jack Clifford and Darren Ryan after ten minutes of play. Listry were always dangerous on the counter attack and they reeled off three scores without reply, however further scores from Kevin McCarthy and Rocco Sheehan meant the sides went in at the break tied at six points apiece. Michael Dwyer kicked the first score of the second half but Listry struck for their first goal in the 9th minute. Fossa didn’t panic and played their way back into contention with scores from Paddy Sheehan, Rocco Sheehan and Michael O’Dwyer but unfortunately they conceded a second goal in the 14th minute which meant they had to start all over again. In an exciting last fifteen minutes both sides gave it their all, Michael O’Dwyer showed all his experience with two points, Peadar Kelliher, Killian Buckley and Brian Myers brought the deficit back to one with time running out. Try as they might, Fossa couldn’t break down a resolute Listry defence to get the equaliser and it finished Listry, 2-10, Fossa 0-15. Team: Lee Lenihan, Anthony Okeeffe, Sam Buckley, Brian Myers 0-1, Dan O’Keeffe, Paddy Sheehan 0-1, Ruari Doyle, Eoin Talbot 0-1, Rian Colleran, Jack Clifford 0-1, Killian Buckley 0-1, Kevin McCarthy 0-2, Michael O’Dwyer 0-4, Rocco Sheehan 0-2, Darren Ryan 0-1, Mark Kennelly, Peadar Kelliher 0-1, Sean Dineen, Francis Moran, Ryan O’Leary.
Kilcummin GAA
UNDER 16: There was disappointment for our Under 16’s on Sunday morning at Fitzgerald Stadium when they went down 2-21 to 3-11 in the East Kerry Division 1 Final. In the end Listry proved worthy winners in a contest in which Kilcummin showed little of the great form that had got them to the final berth. That said the team fought back from a ninepoint deficit to get back on level par and battled into the lead by the 40th minute before Listry aided by a number of 2 pointers pushed clear once again. Listry took early command of the contest and led 0-5 to 0-0 after the opening quarter. Kilcummin opened their account on the 15th minute when the impressive Liam O’Mahony raised an orange flag after a long-distance effort. Despite this it was Listry who continued to force the issue and pushed well clear by the 25th minute 1-8 to 0-2. Kilcummin who were on a 3-game unbeaten run finally found some of the form that sent them to the final when they hit a telling purple patch which included a rasper of a goal from Cian Stack which proved too hot to handle in the Listry square. This followed by points by Stack, O’Mahony, Joe O’Connor and Aidan Huggard had the sides level at the break 1-8 apiece. Cian Stack into the wind put Kilcummin into the lead for the first time in the contest and despite creating a number of chances failed to push further ahead before Listry found the target for 3 unanswered points to regain
the lead 1-11 to 1-9. Then the score of the game for Kilcummin, a wonderfully timed short kick out by Hugh Maguire which was collected by Tristan Murphy before Joe O’Connor continued the run down the line before sending a highball into the edge of the square with Liam O’Mahony at the end of the delivery scoring a goal. It put Kilcummin back into the lead by the 40th minute. Listry would score the next 1-6 of the contest to put them clear and despite a late flurry of scores including a Daragh Keane penalty it was to be Listry’s day. Well done to all the players who gave their very best on the day and there is little time for a break as they face Na Gaeil next weekend (TBC) in the County League Division 1 semi-final.
