Lessons on life this Women’s Health Week

W

Obviously getting older is something I think about and probably more so now I have kids, but do I embrace it and think how lucky I am to be getting older and seeing life in different stages, or am I still just trying to cling onto youth? What would I write to my younger self and even my own daughter about being a woman, getting older and loving who you are?

Number ONE – Always wear sunscreen! Years of factor 4 oil in Europe have not treated my forehead well and really the suntan is not worth it! Number TWO - Be kinder to yourself, and don’t compare yourself to others, we are

all unique and different. Things that you think are flaws are not, they are part of you.

Number THREE – Never take your health for granted. Don’t miss those checkups, make them part of your routine. Number FOUR – Eat well, exercise and try to be healthy (but everything in balance ;-)) you will be grateful for it when you are older. Number FIVE – Don’t ignore stress and anxiety but find ways to help you manage them. Number SIX – In relation to number five, if you can, work to live don’t live to work, at the end of the day when all is said and done will it really have been worth it. Number SEVEN – You are always stronger than you think you are, remember that. So this Women’s Health Week lets embrace getting older, take control of our physical and mental wellbeing, be positive and enjoy life!

ave you heard of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)? The NDIS provides support for Australians with disability. It can provide funding, information, and support to help people with disability and developmental delay achieve their goals like greater independence, community involvement and improved wellbeing. But the process of navigating and accessing the NDIS can be stressful and confusing for many families. Telethon Speech & Hearing (TSH) is a registered NDIS provider with programs and services that are eligible to be funded by the NDIS. This includes early intervention and school support for children with hearing loss, individual and group therapy options for children with speech and language difficulties, speech pathology, occupational therapy, psychology, and audiology services. TSH also has a dedicated NDIS Consultant within its team of experts to help families understand and access the NDIS for children with hearing loss, language delay or developmental delay. NDIS support from Telethon Speech & Hearing can include: Family education about the NDIS and how it can be beneficial to you Working together to prepare for your

first NDIS pre-planning meeting – offering advice with what to expect, useful terminology and help finding the best therapy supports for your child Support to understand your NDIS plan and guidance in its implementation Guidance with setting up budgets, to ensure your family’s funding will last as well as support for families who selfmanage Advice for your family during the yearly NDIS plan review process. Whether you are just starting your NDIS journey or already have an NDIS plan, TSH will provide unbiased, transparent advice to help ensure your child with hearing loss, language delay or developmental delay can access the best possible services to reach their full potential. Helping Families Through the NDIS

By Claire de Franck, Editor hen I sat down to write this article ahead of Women’s Health Week this month, I confess I did have a bit of writers block, but then something fell into my Facebook feed as fate would have it about women getting more beautiful as they grow older, not less, and what would happen ‘if all the women in the world started loving themselves even more with every year that passed.’

Fairy Floss Ballet is on the look out for little dancers aged 2.5 to 5yo. Dancers who delight in the joy of movement, in sparking their imagination and creating pathways for lifelong learning. These unique little dancers are keen to learn their first ballet steps through the magic of play, and they thrive in classes that are immersed in the wonder and innocence of childhood. If you have spotted any of these special little souls, let us know… we have an enchanting experience waiting for them.

BOOK TALK

T

his month we reviewed ‘My Shadow is Pink’ a heart-warming book aimed at 3 to 8 year olds by Scott Stuart, a Melbourne writer. The book which has wonderful and engaging illustrations, is a rhyming story looking at gender equality, identity and diversity set against a background of love and self-acceptance. It is a wonderful celebration of being different and having the courage to be yourself, in a world of blue shadows the young boy is born with a pink shadow and loves dresses and dancing. We loved the emotion of the book which draws you in immediately, the dedication itself’ You are loved exactly as you are.’ is to Scott’s son Colin who was the inspiration for the story. Its enduring message of love and acceptance will resonate with adults and children alike and is definitely one to read again and again.

RRP $24.99 from Booktopia and Amazon Australia. Head to page 5 for a Q&A with Author Scott Stuart.

Risky business for children

ncouraging children to take risks in a safe environment is a good way to build confidence and self-belief.

Goodstart’s Pedagogy General Manager, Sue Robb, believes that physical activity is not only vital for development, but it also encourages risk taking. Exploring an obstacle trail, where all the equipment is well grounded and there is adequate supervision, allows the children to take a risk and improve their balance. When children have strong balance, it helps them with jumping and riding a bike and then later in life it helps them with surfing, skiing and other hobbies. At all Goodstart Centres children are given

the opportunity to take risks within a safe environment where they are fully supervised. This helps build their confidence and provides them with a sense of self-belief. To arrange a tour of your local Goodstart Early Learning Centre, simply call 1800 222 543 or visit goodstart.org.au

Give fast fashion the flick

T

he fashion industry is one of the most wasteful in the world. With the rise of ‘fast fashion’, clothing production has doubled and the rate at which these clothes are disposed of has also increased, with Australian’s disposing of 6,000kg of fashion and textile waste every 10 minutes! Here’s how to make a difference: Avoid purchasing altogether! This is so much easier if you remove the temptation – limit how often you go to the shops and don’t browse catalogues. Reduce how much you buy. Set a limited budget, preferably buying only high quality and durable items that will last. Get creative. Repair what you can or try running a clothing swap with friends.

High School Musical set to hit the Perth stage

P

erth’s Regal Theatre is to welcome Australia’s first musical since coronavirus, with the stage adaptation of the high energy 2006 hit television film High School Musical! The family friendly show will run from Thursday, 8th to Sunday, October 11th. Featuring the song We’re All In This Together it seems apt for this time says CEO of HAMA Production, Marina Del Basso, adding that it is ideal for all the family; a Grease for Generation Y and a modern Romeo and Juliet. Set against the music of the 2000s, the story centres on Wildcat’s basketball captain Troy Bolton (Ethan Churchill) and the brainy, but shy Gabriella Montez (Bella McSporran),

Met with opposition from their friends including Troy’s basketball team, Gabriella’s science clubbers and drama regulars, they push on and inspire others to pursue their secret talents and dreams. Jordan, a recent student of NumberWorks’ nWords January holiday course is a great example of this. A keen keyboard and piano player, he took his approach to this with him in his studies of English and Maths, and the learning challenges they presented.

Despite doing very well at school, he has continued to attend lessons, understanding the importance of this routine: “[NumberWorks’nWords] helps majorly. It helps you to stay ahead and build upon what you’re doing at school.”

What did you learn most about yourself when writing the book?

their view of the world? Books and media play a huge role in how our kids see the world. If a child doesn’t see themselves portrayed in media, or worse, sees themselves consistently portrayed negatively, it has a real impact on their selfesteem. But also, kids really relate to and internalise the characters that they regularly experience – I believe as authors we have a responsibility to understand that and create stories that make kids feel better about themselves.

I think every time you sit down and write about your experiences it makes you examine what you think you already know. Within the story, it made me really dive into my own childhood and think about how I was raised and if my parents would have accepted me (they would have). It made me really think about how I view the world, and recognise places I judge people unfairly. Outside the story, it taught me that I have a level of persistence and grit I didn’t realise I had when I am making something I care about!

What would be the one thing you would want readers to take away from this book?

What surprised you the most? I was surprised by how challenging it was for me to write this book. I kept wanting to move the story in directions other than what was emotionally raw for me – and I had to keep reminding myself to write the story that only I can tell.

What did Colin make of the book? There was a definite moment when he saw the physical book where we as his parents could see the positive impact it had in him. It gave him more permission to be fully himself, and he starting talking about the different shadows that he has. Mostly though, I’m so thankful he absolutely loves the book and it has become a regular read in our house.

Is it easier or harder to write a book when you feel so emotionally involved? It’s both easier and harder. Easier in that the story is right there for you to grab and put words to, but it is so much more challenging because that requires a level of vulnerability that can be really uncomfortable to dive into. To quantify it, I usually take a couple of months to get a kids book to where I am happy with it, but this book took me years.

Who are some of your favourite children’s authors and why? Tom Percival has created a beautiful series about worry, anger and standing out – I love his books! Also Oliver Jeffers manages to create pure works of art wrapped up in great stories. Davina Bell & Allison Colpoys, Heath McKenzie, Beatrice Blue – I could on forever!

What was your favourite childhood book? I have answered this differently elsewhere, but I would say “A Fish Out of Water” by Dr

kidsinperth.com.au <<<

Seuss. He was a master at creating books that kids loved to read over and over, and I hope that one day my books have the same impact.

How did working at the Royal Childrens Hospital influence your writing?

I want kids to take away that if you have the courage to be fully yourself, even in the face of discomfort, there is so much more joy and connection on the other side. That there will always be people who love you if you are brave enough to show who you truly are. SCAN HERE TO BUY THE BOOK

I wrote this book before I started working there, but the Hospital has given me 2 things. First, a sense of gratitude that I didn’t have before. That every day of health and happiness is something to be celebrated. And second, it’s made me more aware that there are kids out there struggling in so many different ways, and as writers, we have the ability to create something that makes their lives better, even just for a few minutes.

Do you think that you will follow up ‘My Shadow is Pink’ and ‘Alone’ with other books that sit alongside them ie in the themes of feeling alone, love and self-acceptance or will you go in another direction? I am actually working on a sequel, called “My Shadow is Blue” (about a young girl who breaks gender stereotypes) which I hope to have ready soon, and I have a few books coming out in similar themes – for example “How to Be a Real Man” is coming out in January through Hardie Grant. I definitely love to create stories that actively empower kids, but I also love to write stories that are just pure fun, so expect some of those too! How would you describe the power of books in relation to young readers and

SEPTEMBER 2020 THE PARENTS’ PAPER 09

Check up on your health ladies this Women’s Health Week By Claire de Franck, Editor

L

adies and girls it’s time to check in on health, thanks to the Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week. The campaign running from 7-11 September, encourages all women and girls to take positive and proactive steps to being healthy, both in mind and body. This year’s theme is health checks. Now in its eighth year, Women’s Health Week encourages people in clubs, communities and workplaces to get involved. They can host or attend a health event during the week, or simply sign up to receive five days of free daily emails loaded with articles, videos, podcasts, quizzes and more – all aimed at improving women’s knowledge of their own bodies and health. “Women’s Health Week provides Australian women with the opportunity to reflect on their physical and mental health,”

says Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt. “This year, more than ever, I would encourage women not to ignore their own health and utilise the resources, activities and support services available during Women’s Health Week,” says Mr Hunt. “Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I would urge all women to continue to see their doctor and seek health advice when required.” In its annual National Women’s Health Survey, Jean Hailes identified the two biggest barriers to women following a healthy lifestyle is ‘lack of time’ and ‘health not being a priority’. Yet, by making even small changes, women can improve their health and reduce their risk of getting a range of illnesses. By signing up to Women’s Health Week, women will receive daily health tips,

tools and information to help them unlock their own powers for good health in five key areas, focusing on one area each day. On day 1, Jean Hailes will talk about health issues “below the belt”. On day 2, women will learn about heart health. On day 3, there will be easy-to-understand content on how to maintain a healthy bladder and bowel. On day 4, mental health will be the focus and, on day 5, we’ll dive into financial health and its connection to mental and emotional health. It’s time to start making positive changes that can last a lifetime!

Mammograms What you need to know

H

aving regular mammograms through BreastScreen WA (BSWA) is one of the best things you can do to detect breast cancer early. BSWA provides FREE screening mammograms to women 40 years or over without breast symptoms every two years. During the appointment a specially trained female radiographer will usually take two pictures of each breast. In order to get clear pictures the breast is compressed, which may be uncomfortable but lasts only for a few seconds. Having a mammogram is safe, dignified and quick, taking as little as 15 minutes for the entire appointment. For more information visit www.breastscreen.health.wa.gov.au

• Women in Australia have a 1 in 7 risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime • The risk of breast cancer increases with age and less than 6% of all breast cancers occur in women younger than 40 years of age • A mammogram can detect 70-90% of breast cancers

ife is busy and juggling everything is hard with a family, it’s even harder if you don’t have relatives close by to help, and don’t know where to go for reliable, trustworthy and available babysitters in your neighbourhood. As an expat family living here in Perth, this was the problem Eve and Nick had, and their answer was to set-up Kin Sitters in 2017. Kin CEO, Nick Lonie, said: “We wanted Kin to make childcare simple but safe, so all of our babysitters (over 400 of them) have to be at least 18 and have a valid Working with Children Check as a minimum standard. We also offer babysitters with First Aid Qualifications and Diplomas in Early Childhood Education and Care. Parents can read all the carer reviews and ratings left by other parents. “The app itself is free to download and so easy to use with cashless payments, so all parents need to worry about is what they are going to do with their time!” Find out more at www.kinsitters.com.au

Learn reflexology: wellbeing is in your hands

R

eflexology is a tactile therapy based on the principle that there are reflexes in the hands, feet, head and ears that correspond to all physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the human being. A reflexologist is able to access these reflex points to assist in well-being and healing both physically and mentally. The natural art of reflexology may be suitable for babies, kids, adults and the elderly. At the Australian School of Reflexology and Relaxation (ASRR), they provide quality training for those seeking a change in

profession, upskilling to further their career or simply for personal development. As Australia’s leading specialist Reflexology School for over 34 years, they offer a wide range of webinars, introductory workshops, professional courses and post graduate training.
