“I am so grateful for how loving and caring everyone was. My daughter has a hard time warming up to people, but I could tell she felt so safe and secure with everyone that interacted with her at KIDS Center. I was really, really impressed.“

WHAT WE

The community turned out in force to support KIDS Center during these uncertain times. Thanks to the generosity of donors, sponsors, foundations and grassroots supporters, KIDS Center remained open and stable.

With gratitude,

As restrictions lifted and children came back into the community—and back into the view of mandatory reporters—reports of child abuse began to rise. By the end of 2021, reports and referrals were nearing pre-pandemic levels.

FROM DIRECTORTHE

3KIDS Center 2021 Annual Report Gil ExecutiveLevy Director

Dear Friends,

We are grateful for all of you who have given your time, energy and support to keep hope alive and ensure KIDS Center is here for every child who needs us.

To keep our staff, clients, partners and attendees safe during the pandemic, we adjusted our operations, service delivery, trainings and fundraising events. We were inspired by how nimble, flexible and supportive everyone was during this period of heightened change.

Over the last few months, we’ve been busy planning how to meet the growing need in our community—by increasing our capacity, supporting our partners, and crafting a strategic plan. We are hopeful for the future. As each child discovers when they walk through our door, hope is powerful.

The past year has been unlike anything our nonprofit has experienced. It was at times heartbreaking, inspiring, and humbling. We witnessed firsthand the devastating impacts of the pandemic on children and families. During a time of extreme uncertainty, we also received hundreds of donations from the community to continue our work.

We received fewer reports of child abuse when schools were closed in spring of 2021. Abuse was still happening—but it was going undetected by teachers and other mandatory reporters while children were isolated at home. During this dark period, the abuse cases that were coming to light were often detected at emergency room visits.

We continue to navigate a tricky and challenging path through this pandemic. We’ve come to expect that “normal” may still be a ways off. But we have also learned some valuable lessons this past year. We’ve learned that we are resilient. We’ve learned that challenges also bring opportunities. And we’ve learned that, even in the worst of times, we can continue coming through for kids. Especially when the community has our back.

LEARNEDLESSONSItwasachallengingyear,butitwasalsoayearthatbroughtclarityandinspiredcreativity.Welearnedsomekeylessonsin2021.Herearetheonesthatstoodout.

We embraced new ways of working and ramped up quickly as demand increased.

370 new donors supported KIDS Center in 2021.

Flexibility helped us meet the moment.

KIDS Center was designated as an essential service during the pandemic. To meet this state mandate and keep our doors open— while keeping staff and clients safe—we got creative. We kept our team lean (while avoiding any layoffs), encouraged remote working, began offering virtual therapy sessions, and created a rotating schedule to ensure a small, essential team was on site daily to conduct child abuse evaluations. When child abuse reports and referrals for services began to rise, KIDS Center responded quickly by increasing the capacity of our evaluation team, adding forensic interviewers and medical examiners to our staff.

The community found creative ways to support us.

We added 6 staff in 2021, giving us 27 full-time staff by year’s end.

Support remained steady, even in hard times.

Teachers, daycare workers, and pediatricians were instrumental in reporting suspected abuse.

Two things we heard often in 2021 were, “I’m glad you’re here” and “How can I help?” The pandemic inspired the community to step up their support in a variety of ways. Central Oregonians gave generously to ensure KIDS Center could remain open and continue leading our region’s response to child abuse. The community also planned benefits for KIDS Center, started social media fundraisers, and participated in donation drives to collect toys, quilts, teddy bears, household items, and gift cards for the families we served.

Once kids returned to school, hundreds of abuse cases came to light.

Children were less safe at home.

5KIDS Center 2021 Annual Report

At the height of the pandemic—when children were sheltering at home—reports of child abuse dropped dramatically. Children were still experiencing abuse, but abuse was going undetected except for the most extreme cases. In 2021, the number of children referred for child abuse evaluations began trending back up as kids began returning to classrooms. KIDS Center evaluated 288 children in 2020. In 2021, that number jumped to 345. Statewide, children’s advocacy centers described a “delayed wave” of child abuse cases. The pandemic proved that children are safer when they are visible to mandatory reporters and community members trained in prevention.

Your support kept KIDS Center resilient in one of our most challenging years. Thanks to your enthusiasm, generosity, and compassion, we were able to help local children build their own resilience and find hope in their most challenging time. Thank you for sharing our vision of a world where all children are safe from abuse. Together, we make a difference every day.

PREVENTION TRAININGS PROVIDED>> DARKNESS TO LIGHT: STEWARDS OF CHILDREN ©, LET’S TALK ABOUT IT, SAFETYNET ©

The success of virtual trainings reshaped our prevention program.

Prior to the pandemic, all of our child abuse prevention trainings were held in person. We began testing virtual trainings in 2020 as a way to keep staff and the public safe. We learned that providing a virtual option removed barriers of distance, transportation, and work schedules. Notably, virtual trainings improved access for people living in rural areas—cementing our commitment to make virtual trainings a permanent aspect of our prevention program. As COVID-19 continued to resurface in 2021, adults throughout Central Oregon attended trainings from the comfort and safety of their home—and did their part to make their community safer for all kids.

And the most important lesson of Whenall...we work together, we can always make a difference.

Virtual options made trainings more accessible.

In order to keep everyone safe, we kept our Healing Hearts Luncheon virtual in 2021. For Cork & Barrel—our largest fundraiser of the year—we created a hybrid event with in-person and virtual options. After testing an online auction format for 2020’s fully virtual Cork & Barrel, we learned that supporters enjoyed the experience of participating in an online auction. In 2021, we nearly doubled the size and revenue of our online auction, which helped our Cork & Barrel event meet our fundraising goal to support services to families.

1 in 4 adults took a virtual training to learn how to prevent child abuse.

We saw a 68% increase in revenue for our Cork & Barrel Online Auction.
