A NOTE FROM KIDS CENTER’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Kids are why we exist. #KidsToo We live this mantra every day at KIDS Center by providing vital responses to children who have the courage to disclose abuse. In order to ensure we’re there for every child when they need us, KIDS Center engaged in a strategic planning process. We focused on enhancing organizational performance to better serve our most important clientele: children and families. I’m happy to report that over the past year important progress has been made in three key outcome areas:

Improving Client Access to Quality Services With the passage of Erin’s Law in Oregon, KIDS Center provided 26 critical trainings to 1,000 school personnel throughout the Bend – La Pine School District. The training covered the effects of child sexual abuse on children, how to handle child disclosures, and elucidated mandatory reporting requirements. These efforts led to more child abuse referrals, resulting in the end of abuse and the beginning of healing. Visit kidscenter.org/educator-trainings or contact Rachel Visser at rvisser@kidscenter.org for more info.

Ensuring Sufficient Resources are Available to Provide Services Dr. Nancy Heavilin joined KIDS Center early in 2018 which resulted in an increased number of child abuse evaluation appointments and children receiving on-site services. The addition of Dr. Heavilin further supported our fulfillment of Karly’s Law, a law that requires a 48-hour response when children have injuries suspected or confirmed to have occurred from abuse. With a full medical staff, KIDS Center can provide these timely exams. To learn more about Dr. Heavilin or Karly’s Law, visit kidscenter.org/nancyheavilin or www.doj.state.or.us/crime-victims/for-medical-providers/karlys-law.

Optimization of Key Staff, Process, and Technology Resources Helping others effectively heal from trauma can take a toll on a caregiver’s mental health. To ensure our staff are supported and maintain their emotional health, KIDS Center created a secondary traumatic stress committee focused on improving understanding and responding to this critical need. Thank you for becoming advocates this year by generously giving your time, talent, and financial support. All of this ensures we’re there for every child and family. And to our community partners who provide a critical voice and act to protect children from further harm, thank you. Together, we’re strengthening our community by swiftly responding to those who have experienced the trauma of abuse while working feverishly to prevent it! In gratitude,
