Plantation General Hospital is committed to safety. PGH is improving Patient Safety through use of best practices, improved technology and increased patient involvement in their healthcare. Ms. Rosemary Silvia, RN, MS, is the PGH Director of Quality, Risk and Patient Safety and will speak to FAU students on January 16, 2007 at 6:00 pm in room SO 200. The College of Healthcare Executives @ FAU kicked off its 2007 Leadership Series in Healthcare with the generous support of Dr. Patrick Bernet, Ms. Rosemary Slivia, and Plantation General Hospital. Rosemary Silvia a registered nurse and the Director of Risk/Quality Management & Patient Safety for Plantation General Hospital spoke to FAU undergraduate students on Hospital Safety and Risk Management. Ms. Silvia has taken on the responsibility of preparing Plantation General Hospital for surveys with JCAHO, AHCA and CMS by performing mock surveys to determine areas in need of improvement. She also oversees all of the best practice initiatives and medical malpractice litigation. Prior to moving to Florida, she served as the Performance Improvement/Risk Manager and Patient Safety Specialist for the Bureau of Medicine at Naval Health Care New England in Newport Rhode Island developing and implementing Patient Safety Programs for five geographically dispersed outpatient facilities in New England. In addition, she spent 18 years at Newport Hospital and developed their Risk Management Department and Patient Safety Program. Ms. Silvia earned her BS (cum laude) in Social and Health Service from Roger Williams University and received her MS in Healthcare Management from Finch University in Chicago. She received her Certificate in Healthcare Risk Management from the New England Healthcare Assembly and was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from the Chief Medical Officer of Tricare Management for participation in Tricare activities in Washington, DC. COHE members would like to thank Ms. Slivia and Plantation General Hospital for providing FAU students real world case study and insight. Our members are working on tomorrow’s healthcare solutions.

Todd Blum, Chief Executive Officer is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization and focuses his attention on physician recruitment and retention, mergers and acquisitions and strategic planning of the organization. He is a voting member of all Board Committees and reports directly to the President and Chairman of the group. Mr. Blum joined ENTSF in July 1999 and has over fifteen years of healthcare administrative experience in finance, operations, managed care contracting, physician recruitment, and healthcare marketing. He currently serves on the Board of the Association of Otolaryngology Administrators (AOA) and as Vice President of the Florida Medical Group Management Association. Prior to joining Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates of South Florida, Mr. Blum worked as the Administrator of the South Florida Institute for Reproductive Medicine and as an Assistant Administrator at Atlanta Ear, Nose, and Throat Associates. Mr. Blum has a Bachelor of Science in Management from Tulane University and a dual Masters in Health Care Administration and Business Administration from Georgia State University.

The COHE Students & Faculty Welcome Back Beach Picnic

The College of Healthcare Executives is hosting a Welcome Back Beach Picnic on Sunday, September 9 at the Cove Beach Club on Deerfield Beach. The Picnic is open to all FAU Health Administration students, faculty, alumni, and invited guests. There will be BBQ, a pool, and access to a private beach. You will meet classmates, faculty, and alumni who can help you succeed in your health administration education and career. The full event cost is $10 per person. You can bring the kids (free). If you have a sweet tooth, please bring your favorite dessert.

“Jay” Piriz has been with Memorial Healthcare System for nearly 25 years serving as a member of the administrative and executive teams in a variety of capacities. Since January 2007, Jay has served as Senior Vice President of East Operations for Memorial Healthcare System, and Administrator of Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, a position he has held since July 2000. Jay is actively involved in many local community initiatives. He has served, as President of the Greater Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, is a past Board member of the Hollywood Boys and Girls Club and the Broward County Crime Commission. He has served on the Community Foundation of Broward Grantmaking and Community Impact Committee, and is Past President of Hispanic Unity of Florida. He has also served, on the Board of the Davie/Cooper City Chamber of Commerce, The Advisory Board of the One More Step Charity, and is a former Board Member of the EASE Foundation of Davie, a charitable organization focused on preventing homelessness. Jay has served on the Broward Sheriff’s Office Professional Standards Committee and currently sits on the Broward Regional Health Planning Council Trauma Advisory Committee, the Hollywood YMCA Board of Directors, is Vice President of the Hollywood Business Council Board, and most recently, served as Chairman of the Board of Schott Communities for the Deaf and Disabled. Jay served in the Hospital Corps of the United States Navy. He has Bachelors degrees in Business Administration and Radiology from Columbia College and the George Washington University respectively, and he attended the University of Miami Graduate School Of Business. Mr. Piriz will speak to FAU students and faculty on Safety and Reliability in Healthcare. The COHE Tailgate Party FAU vs. Arkansas State

The College of Healthcare Executives hosted its first Tailgate Party on November 10 at Lockhart Stadium. With a late game rally, FAU was victorious over Arkansas State, helping to extend the celebration for our students, faculty, alumni, and friends. All FAU Health Administration students, faculty, alumni, and guests are invited to next year’s Tailgate Party to continue a new COHE tradition. Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger and the Fighting Owls have built an exciting football program for fans to enjoy. A big Thank You goes out to Dr. Valentine and the COHE officers for organizing this year’s celebration. Our upcoming third Annual Holiday Dinner is approaching. “Dr. Phil� Vogelgesang, COO of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies, will speak to FAU students on Local Leadership in Healthcare. Phil Vogelgesang, J.D, FACHE, began his career as a lawyer and quickly switched to healthcare. His former Indiana University Law School classmate is Former Vice President, Dan Quayle. Mr. Vogelgesang has been involved in almost every aspect of the healthcare industry from administration to medical/legal management consulting, and at almost every level in the organization. He is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives, and a Member of the American Academy of Medical Administrators His wealth of experience, industry knowledge, and involvement in local healthcare issues offers you insight on how to advance your career, particularly in South Florida. This event is open to all FAU Health Administration students, faculty, alumni, and guests. There is no cost. The College of Healthcare Executives will hold its annual Holiday Dinner on December 17, 2007 at 7:00 pm at Mario’s of Boca, conveniently located near the FAU campus. We invite all FAU Health Administration students, faculty, alumni, and guests to attend this annual tradition with friends. As attendance increases each year, we kindly request your reservation in order that Mario’s can service our event with their fantastic food and drinks.
