FOREWORD

F

or years André Rieu has been enchanting many people with his romantic melodies and classical waltzes during the Vrijthof concerts in Maastricht. For a moment, our city is at the mercy of this famous violinist and his Johan Strauss Orchestra. Without a doubt he will give many people another wonderful summer night to remember. André Rieu and his concerts are inextricably linked with Maastricht. We are eager to show you all the beauty of this city: its historical squares, the wonderful churches, the exceptional boutiques, gourmet hotspots, and modern city districts. This André Rieu City Guide will give you all the ins and outs. Enjoy more than just André’s music: also be refreshed by

this international university city with its charming centre and grand atmosphere. Maastricht is located in the heart of Europe; it was here that the European Union saw the light in 1992, thanks to the Maastricht Treaty. In 2017, we will have a major celebration for its 25th anniversary. I am very proud that we are hosting André Rieu’s concerts and I am honoured that I can attend them in my capacity as a mayor. I am wishing you a wonderful stay in Maastricht and an unforgettable night at the Vrijthof. Maastricht welcomes the world! Annemarie Penn-te Strake, Mayor of Maastricht 5

PERSONAL TIPS BY ANDRÉ RIEU 6

‘A city situated on a river always has something extra to offer. ‘The Blue Danube’ is a perfect example of this.’

M

aastricht is not only the place where I was born, but it is also a city to my liking. It is not too big, it is romantic, and it is located between Germany and Belgium, so very international. In the course of the centuries many cultures have influenced the city. This is reflected in the contemporary style of the life and in the dialect, which is still common practice here. The whole area of Maastricht and the Province of Limburg

is very musical. Many people are into making music, in for instance marching or brass bands. We are spoon-fed with music. We even have a World Music Contest (in Kerkrade) which will be held again in the summer of 2017, with the best concert bands from all over the world. I do not have a lot of spare time to stroll around the city, but I do love the Jekerkwartier-area very much. It is the oldest part of Maastricht and I grew up here. It reaches as far as the well-known Onze Lieve Vrouwe Square. The quaint little square on the 7

corner of the Grote Looierstraat really reminds me of France. Of course there is the Meuse, which brings a lot of activity to Maastricht. A city situated on a river always has something extra to offer. ‘The Blue Danube’ is a perfect example of this. Then there is the wonderful Vrijthof Square, where we perform our concerts every year. It is the heart of the city with the historic basilica of Saint Servatius and the gothic church of Saint John. The Vrijthof Square used to be a cemetery, but now it is more alive than ever. When we are allowed on stage at any rate.

You can have a lovely stroll through the city. Please cross the river by taking the old Roman bridge or the modern pedestrian bridge. You will enter the Wyck-area with adjacent to it the new Céramique-area. And there are terraced patios everywhere ensuring that typical exuberant atmosphere.

VRIJTHOF CONCERTS SINCE 2005 André Rieu gives his famous Vrijthof-concerts since 2005, in the heart of the city where he is born.

I

t started with three concerts, now in 2016 there are seven concerts at the Vrijthof. Every evening there are 10.000 people at the square. Every year more and more people from abroad come to Maastricht for these special concerts. Now about half of the visitors come from outside the Netherlands and Belgium. „They come from everywhere”, says Pierre Rieu, CEO of André Rieu Travel. „We have people from 10

Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and from many countries in Europe. Especially from the United Kingdom we may say welcome to many fans. Most of them have seen my father in a concert in their own land, but they think that the Vrijthof-concerts are the most special of all.” André Rieu brings an extra special program in Maastricht, he also invites artists

from all over the world to join him on stage, from Trini Lopez to Jermaine Jackson. And every year there is a kind of ‘warming up’ with the Orchestra band Sainte Cécile. Sainte Cécile from Eijsden plays at the Vrijthof just before André Rieu and his orchestra get on stage. More than a hundred musicians walk down the square and pass the sidewalk cafés and create a great atmosphere. Rieu invites this orchestra

band for a reason: only the best is good enough. André Rieu likes the Vrijthofconcerts very much. „It is my hometown, that gives an extra warm feeling. And because the square is not too big and people are sitting on the terraces, you get a wonderful atmosphere." 11

VRIJTHOF CONCERTS REQUIRE SIGNIFICANT PREPARATIONS

T

he preparations for the seven AndrĂŠ Rieu concerts at the Vrijthof Square in Maastricht occur throughout the entire year, when it comes to ideas. The actual rehearsals of the Johann Strauss Orchestra take place in the last weeks leading up to the concerts.

12

The stage builders begin their work a little over a week before the first concert. The stage used at the Vrijthof is the special open air stage which AndrĂŠ Rieu has used at various locations around the world since 2000. Just a few weeks ago it was standing in the Romanian capital of

Bucharest. This stage has also been used in Maastricht since 2005, when AndrĂŠ Rieu began giving open air concerts with the Johan Strauss Orchestra in his hometown. The current stage is not as large as the reconstruction of SchĂśnbrunn Palace, which the orchestra toured with for 13

some time, and yet it weighs about 300 tonnes. More than 50 engines ensure that the lighting, audio equipment and video screens are functional. Six cranes and two forklifts are indispensable for the construction and dismantling of the stage. The entirety of the equipment is transported by 22 trucks. Behind the stage, a 30 meter LED screen can display any desired image. The concerts at the Vrijthof will be compiled into a TV special, capturing an audience of at least 100 million people. For this production, 14

22 TV cameras are deployed, including a so-called flycam - a manoeuvrable camera suspended on wires 15 meters above the square. For perfect sound, 96 microphones are installed. Behind the stage a 16 meter mobile digital recording studio is set up. In order to recreate the renowned ambience, the decoration of the square includes 860 lights. And although An-

dré Rieu performs all over the world with his orchestra, the Vrijthof is the only location where about 2,000 people have dinner prior to the concert at one of the terraces surrounding the square, and then enjoy the show along with the almost 9,000 spectators on the square itself. This is the only period in the year that the Vrijthof is completely off limits to all traffic, and solely accessible

for concert visitors with a valid ticket. Large screens are installed on the side streets leading to the square, enabling those without a ticket to enjoy the Vrijthof concerts as well. As a result, the whole city centre is submersed in the music of the Johan Strauss Orchestra during a performance. The hotels in the city are fully booked during the André Rieu concerts. This period and that of TEFAF, the world art fair held in March, are the busiest for hotel owners in the city of Maastricht.

t could make you feel king of your castle, but that is not how I feel. I appreciate the ambience, the beauty and the history, and it makes my imagination run wild when creating wonderful things. The famous musketeer d’Artagnan even stayed here once, just before he died outside Maastricht’s city gates. The old marlstone, the detailed architecture, the won20

derful flowers in the garden, they all stimulate my senses. I notice that the guests we personally invite feel at ease in this environment. That is important to me. I love this kind of romantic architecture. It is the same romance that you hear in Johann Strauss’ music. That is why I just love Vienna. It makes you wonder why nowadays so few buildings are being constructed based

ANDRÉ RIEU’S COURT LIFE

on romantic architecture. We have rebuilt the worldrenowned Schönbrunn Palace as a stage once. It was the largest stage ever built in the world. But that is beside the point, because I simply wanted it to be very romantic. Transporting a complete castle, however, is rather difficult. So I am now sticking to my own castle made of stone, so I don’t have to carry it around. 21

THE PAINTINGS OF MARC RIEU

T

his year, Marc Rieu, eldest son of AndrĂŠ and Marjorie Rieu, will again be exhibiting several of his paintings during the Vrijthof concerts, in the Theater aan het Vrijthof. The 37-year old painter has been fascinated by art since childhood. 22

As a toddler, he would get the catalogues out of his parents’ bookcases to admire all the lovely images. In 1990 - the year of Vincent van Gogh - he made the definitive decision to do something with art. He studied Art History and Archaeology in Nijmegen, a degree he completed with

a thesis on Romantic period in 2006. In addition, he took painting classes here and there, as his interest in the practice of painting continued as well.

wand - hence his self-coined artistic movement “suggestive illusionism. His work is often on display in galleries in the Netherlands and abroad.

Now, he has been a full-time painter for years, with a focus on imaginative landscapes. He calls himself a suggestive illusionist; he paints suggestive (dreamy, romantic) works in which he enchants reality using his brush as a magic

This year he shows 30 paintings during the days of the concert, from 8 to 10 july and from 14 to 17 july, from 12 till 17 o’clock. Look also at Facebook and www.marcrieu.com 23

EXPERIENCE CENTRE BRIDGE VROENHOVEN An invasion of the senses Along the Albert Canal in Riemst, Belgium, you can find a surprising tourist attraction. This multimedia bunker in the middle of Limburg nature, accommodates a double exhibition that takes visitors breath away. The interactive experience center bridges the gap between the two subjects that converge on this historical important location. The destruction of World War II on the one hand, and the innovative power of the waterways on the other. The bunker then succeeded to to slow down the progress of the enemy with a few days. You experience the invasion hour by hour through the eyes of soldiers and civilians. At the same time “The Inland navigation Experience centre” shows the importance of this location otherwise. This is not “just” the place where the real war in our country began, it is also a mobility network with great value for economy and ecology. from 1684 and houses a carillon with 49 bells that is still played regularly. Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square and Church of Our Lady Maastricht is well-known for the good ambiance of its squares. The cozy "Onze Lieve Vrouweplein" is one of the best-known. The square is dominated by the robust medieval façade of the "Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk" (the Church of Our Lady). Vrijthof square and St John and St Servaas During the Middle Ages, the Vrijthof square formed the church's walled forecourt. Within the enclosure, private legal rules applied. On Henric van Veldekeplein, the red tower of the Gothic St. John's Church rises above the square. Originally a Roman Catholic parish church, it was converted into a Protestant church in 1632. The church is situated directly next to the impressive St. Servatius Church, the church of the first bishop of Maastricht which holds a treasury with Servatius’ relics.

Dinghuis The name ‘Dinghuis’ comes from the Dutch dingen, which means ‘to administer judgement’. Until around 1650, this building was the courthouse of Maastricht. Nowadays it houses the Maastricht Tourist Office. Lang Grachtje / City wall Take a trip back in time. Parts of the 13th century city wall are still intact and form a lovely part of Maastricht, surrounded by charming streets. Bassin A historic river harbour. Today home to many pleasure craft, as well as exciting restaurants and galleries. Outdoor dining in spring and summer, and cosy romantic dinners in vaulted cellars in autumn and winter. 29

MAASTRICHT ALSO KNOWN AS BIRTHPLACE OF THE EURO

W

ith 120,000 inhabitants, the city of Maastricht is not particularly large, and yet, it enjoys a worldwide reputation. This renown results partly from AndrÊ Rieu, Maastricht’s most famous resident, and furthermore because it is the birthplace of the euro, the European currency. 30

In 1991, Maastricht hosted the European summit for heads of government where the decision was made to create the single currency for European member states, with the exception of Great Britain. The euro was born. In December 2016, the 25th anniversary of this summit will be celebrated. In

February 2017, there will be a commemoration to mark the signing of the Maastricht Treaty. The Maastricht Treaty is well-known, but has both its proponents and opponents. Nonetheless, ‘the Treaty’ made the Netherlands’ southernmost city visible on the international stage. The city’s international flavour can also be attributed to the students and employees of

Maastricht University, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. This educational institution represents more than a hundred nationalities in its ranks and consistently achieves a top position on the list of ‘young’ European universities. All of these ingredients create the special atmosphere that is particularly noticeable during André Rieu’s famous hometown concerts. The international melting 31

pot of Maastricht reaches a crescendo for two weeks, with tens of thousands of people from all over the world travelling to Maastricht for the performances on the Vrijthof Square. On these summer nights, Maastricht briefly becomes the centre of the world. As soon as the maestro enters the large square with his Johann Strauss Orchestra at nine o’clock sharp, innumerable smartphones transmit images from Maastricht to all corners of the world. Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt. 32

Nowhere in the world do the famous verses by Friedrich Schiller from 1785 have greater resonance than here. And nowhere else does the most famous part of Beethoven’s ninth symphony sound as beautiful as it does on the Vrijthof, the most romantic square in all the Netherlands. André Rieu often includes Ode an die Freude (the official title) in his playlist. This piece has a special relationship with Maastricht. In 1985, the song was pronounced the official anthem of the European Community.

This year, Maastricht will highlight the fact that it has been 25 years since the ministers of Foreign Affairs and Finance of 12 European countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom) agreed on an Economic and Monetary Union in the festival hall of the Gouvernement (the provincial seat of government) on the banks of the river Meuse. The agreements are enshrined in the Maastricht Treaty; a hefty document secured in a vault at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome. The Maastricht Treaty provided the basis for introducing the euro, the common currency used in almost all EU member countries since 2002. A symbolic first cash withdrawal was done at an ATM on the market square in Maastricht on January 1, 2002, by Gerrit Zalm, the Dutch minister of Finance at the time.

Today, the EU has developed into a state union of 28 countries, and finds its way into the news on a daily basis, and, to be sure, not always in a positive light. However, we all know that where there is politics, there is quarrel. The Maastricht Treaty itself is not always popular either. Having signed the Treaty, the member states are subject to strict accounting rules, which are not enthusiastically embraced by all countries all the time. Even so, Maastricht benefits. To no small degree, the city’s reputation and economic vitality result from the Maastricht Treaty, regarded as one of the most significant treaties for modern Europe. The meetings on the 9th and 10th of December 1991which led to the agreement, were then attended by more than 2,500 reporters from all over the world.

s its wings WMC Kerkrade spread with André Rieu as its patron It isn’t for a while, but preparations for the 17th edition of the World Music Festival (WMC) in 2017 are in full swing. André Rieu has been a patron of the world-renowned wind music festival since 2013. It is a festival in which Limburg’s borderless reputation as a wind music province receives as much attention as the internation-

al uniting dimension of music, marching and show parades. In Kerkrade, the universal power of expression of music is celebrated with a notable main role for young talent. With programmes like WMC Young Generation, the organisation is building bridges between the established order and talented upcoming musicians. WMC Kerkrade brings together culture and hospitality and provides young people the opportunity to develop within a professional environment. For the WMC, the development of wind music in Limburg and the Euregion is as much a key factor as the developmental process of global wind music. The WMC is leading in that

area, and is seen as the top musical experience for both amateurs and professionals alike. WMC Kerkrade and André Rieu share a common belief in the connective power of music. Music literally crosses borders and speaks the language of the heart. André Rieu has proven that music breaks down borders, from Australia to Romania. Where there is music, people will come together. It can provide a valuable connection between people who understand each other, regardless of each other’s descent, political views or religious beliefs. The relationship between André Rieu and the WMC goes way back. The WMC Kerkrade wishes everyone lots of musical enjoyment at André Rieu’s spectacular concerts at Vrijthof in Maastricht! In 2017, you are cordially invited to come to Kerkrade for the 17th World Music Festival, from 2 July - 30 July on various stages, in the Parkstad Limburg Stadium and in Kerkrade’s completely renovated city centre. But before then, various concerts will be held leading up to 2017. So keep an eye on WMC Kerkrade!

SPHINXKWARTIER: A QUARTER IN THE MAKING

T

he Sphinxkwartier is a quarter of a kind that doesn’t already exist in Maastricht: young, creative, edgy, and industrial. Plans for redevelopment focus on the place where Maastricht’s industrial revolution began. It was here, in the Eiffelbuilding, that Petrus Regout built his ‘Sphinx Factory,’ the start of what grew

36

into an enormous industry, producing bathroom fixtures, tiles, and the products that made Maastricht great. The factory operated until 2006, and since then efforts have been under way to redevelop this area as a district that fits in with the city, but adds something Maastricht does not already have. That’s why this district is being designed to attract creative types, young residents, national and international students, and expatriates. It will be internationally oriented, with room for flexible space and temporary functions. With

pop music stage Muziekgieterij and Lumière Cinema in the Timmerfabriek (a former sawmill), the Pathé Cinema, the Brandweer(kantine) and the Frontenpark, there are plenty of workspaces and meeting places for creative entrepreneurs. But not everything in this part of the city is new and different. The historic and picturesque river harbour ‘t Bassin has a romantic, intimate, and oh-so-slightly Mediterranean atmosphere.

Zuid-Limburg: More than just a short break

A short break in Zuid-Limburg - you have to be an early riser for this because there is so much to do and experience. Decision-making may be difficult at times. Exciting marl caves in Valkenburg and the labyrinth on the Vaalserberg, magical theme parks, zoos like the GaiaZOO in Kerkrade, where the animals can even partly run free, flowering gardens and spacious parks, stunning culture and monuments, water sports on the River Meuse and skiing in Europe’s largest indoor ski arena and, and, and … Museums, galleries and studios History and culture are there in ZuidLimburg in abundance. For centuries, the area had been a bone of contention of emperors, kings and bishops, evidence of which can be found today in the numerous museums and galleries. Visit Zuid-Limburg and discover art, history and culture, to experience up close and personal and to participate in. For details, please also see our website www.visitzuidlimburg.com.

Marl caves and grottos Zuid-Limburg is largely dominated by marlstone caves. Especially around the Valkenburg area, you can find the 250 kmlong underground passages that have made it famous. The caves are also used to reconstruct a bygone age - a copy of a coal mine and a reconstruction of the Roman catacombs, for instance. But there are also many other activities to be enjoyed, such as underground Christmas markets, survival and cycling tours and mountain bike rides are all being held here, offering visitors the unique Zuid Limburg experience.

Winner Tourism for Tomorrow Award 2016 Parkstad Limburg has been announced winner of the WTTC Award 2016, category ‘Best Travel Destination in the World’. Read more about this award and Parkstad Limburg at www.visitparkstad.com.

Land of castles and fortresses Of the hundreds of castles and palaces that have shaped its landscape in earlier times, Zuid-Limburg still boasts a lot of them that have been very carefully restored. Thus, it is possible for the ‘common people ’to visit those‘ noble fortresses’. Just come and explore the beautiful castles and palaces that adorn the landscape.
