5 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2019 PREFACE

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to Maastricht and welcome to TEFAF. This year is the 350th anniversary of the death of one of the best known and loved artists of the Dutch Golden Age – Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669). Rembrandt has always been important to TEFAF. For many years, TEFAF Maastricht’s reputation was built on its extraordinary offering of important Dutch and Flemish Old Master pictures: the first painting by Rembrandt was sold in 1996.

TEFAF Maastricht is now a celebration of art across all disciplines and periods; we look forward to welcoming 40 new exhibitors this year, 14 in the reconfigured TEFAF Modern section. This year is the 32nd edition of the Fair. The concept of transparency continues to be fundamental to how we drive our activities forward. One of the most notable changes over the last year has been to update our vetting procedures to ensure that art lovers to buy with confidence. Our vetting committees will no longer include either auction house professionals or dealers, except where the expertise required cannot be found elsewhere and only as non-voting members. Last year TEFAF and Maastricht strengthened the relationship between the Fair and the city. It is a great privilege to receive such a warm reception from our partners in Maastricht and we look forward to continuing this relationship, working together to welcome visitors this March. Nanne Dekking Chairman Board of Trustees TEFAF

7 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2019 PREFACE

Welcome

The European Fine Art Fair and the city of Maastricht have been an unstoppable combination for decades. TEFAF is unrivalled in the international fine arts field, as evidenced by the success of the TEFAF satellite fair in New York. In turn, the city of Maastricht offers refined art in its historic architecture, its outstanding retail sector, and its impressive range of culinary and cultural activities. Both TEFAF and the city of Maastricht

prioritize quality and progress, implementing new improvements all the time. Quality, after all, is not achieved through a single action, but through sustained efforts. The MECC perpetuates this belief. From hospitality to infrastructure, we want to create a regional offer that exceeds the highest international standards. To achieve this, the TEFAF board and the city council work in close collaboration. Last year, a ten-year action plan was laid down and signed in the form of a covenant. Perhaps most important of all is the unity between TEFAF and Maastricht, which lays the foundation for its success. TEFAF and Maastricht are as inseparable as Rembrandt’s The Night Watch and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. I would like to wish the organizers, the exhibitors, the staff, and the visitors a memorable TEFAF experience. May you enjoy all that our fair and our city has to offer. Welcome to Maastricht. Annemarie Penn-te Strake Mayor of Maastricht

9 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2019 PREFACE

Welcome to Maastricht and welcome to Limburg

Welcome to Limburg! As the governor of the province of Limburg, with Maastricht as its capital, I utter these words daily and with pride. This is a special region with an equally unique character that is reinforced by the annual return of the world’s leading art and antiques fair: TEFAF. If we were to describe Maastricht and Limburg as a work of art, it would be a canvas exploding in a mix of colours, accents, and styles. It would reflect a mixture of influences from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. The canvas would be humming with the joie de vivre that defines our residents. To me, TEFAF, Maastricht, and Limburg are the perfect match. The global na-

ture of the event aligns seamlessly with the international setting of the region; the high quality of the art exhibited here reflects the high standard of living and the outstanding quality of life in our province. Limburg, with its many renowned hotels and restaurants, is above all else an excellent place to live and visit. And then there is our picturesque landscape, hailed by many as the Tuscany of Northern Europe. Like an artist working on their magnum opus, our region is constantly evolving and improving. The MECC, the original home of TEFAF, will soon undergo an extensive renovation. The accessibility of several world-class hotels, the city itself, and the surrounding region will also be optimized in the near future. One thing is for sure: there’s really no need to welcome you to our city; you will instantly feel welcome as soon as you set foot on Limburg soil. Enjoy TEFAF, enjoy Maastricht, and enjoy Limburg. Theo Bovens King’s Commissioner/Governor of the Province of Limburg

24 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2019 REMBRANDT YEAR

Edited version of Rembrandt self-portrait with cap, 1632 - 1636. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Year of Rembrandt Unique exhibitions to commemorate 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death

Rembrandt van Rijn, self-portret, ca. 1628. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

This year marks the 350th anniversary of Rembrandt’s death and has therefore been dubbed the ‘Year of Rembrandt’. This will be celebrated with an unprecedented retrospective of all paintings, prints, and drawings from the Rijksmuseum’s collection. The exhibition will feature such masterpieces as The Night Watch, Pendant portraits of Maerten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit, The Jewish Bride, and The Sampling Officials. Given the vulnerability of these works of art, it is incredible that they are being exhibited simultaneously from 15 February to 10 June. The Rijksmuseum stand at TEFAF will include a nod to the upcoming retrospective. The twenty-two paintings in the exhibition, from his early Self-Portrait as a Young Man to his Self-Portrait as the Apostle Paul, pro-

vide an overview of his life, with his masterpiece The Night Watch as the undisputed pinnacle. This famous painting will be encased in a state-of-the-art glass chamber in July as it undergoes its most extensive restoration to date. The glass chamber will allow visitors to follow the restoration process in detail. The sizeable collection of drawings (60 in total) represents all of the artist’s periods and styles, including several rare drawings from his early period. The Rijksmuseum has selected the 300 best prints of the more than 1,300 in its collection. The exhibition All the Rembrandts introduces different aspects of the artist’s life and work through various themes. When Rembrandt looks at himself in the mirror, the viewer looks over his shoulder. A close examination of Rembrandt’s many self-portraits revels his growth and incomparable talent as an artist. The second theme focuses on Rembrandt’s entourage. As a young man, Rembrandt honed his craft by painting portraits of his mother, his family and friends, and later his wife Saskia. He even painted his wife on her sick bed. The artist was also fascinated by the world around him, from beggars

and buskers to vagrants and actors. He created countless portraits of the people he encountered. This exhibition was made possible by ING, a partner of the Rijksmuseum at TEFAF Maastricht. The Rijksmuseum is commemorating Rembrandt this year through a series of exhibitions, lectures, and activities. The exhibition Rembrandt-Velázquez will be held this autumn, showcasing the celebrated works of the two great seventeenth-century masters. The exhibition will also feature works by Murillo, Vermeer, Zurbarán, Hals, and Ribera and will run from 11 October to 19 January 2020. This exhibition is the result of a special collaboration between the Rijksmuseum and Museo del Prado in Madrid. www.rijksmuseum.nl MAASTRICHT GUIDE

26 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2019 RESTORATION FUND

TEFAF MUSEUM RESTORATION FUND 2019 The Executive Committee of The European Fine Art Foundation (TEFAF) has awarded a total of €50,000 from TEFAF’s Museum Restoration Fund to support the distinct and complex restoration and conservation projects at the National Gallery, UK, and the Museum Volkenkunde, The Netherlands, for the benefit of future generations.

‘View of Deshima in Nagasaki Bay’, by Japanese artist Kawahara Keiga (Museum Volkenkunde, The Netherlands).

Founded in 2012, the TEFAF Museum Restoration Fund supports the restoration and conservation of culturally significant works within museums and institutions worldwide. Museums and institutions that have attended TEFAF Maastricht are eligible to apply for the grants, which are awarded by an independent panel of experts. Supporting the wider art community is an integral part of TEFAF’s DNA and the Fund is one way the Foundation demonstrates its ongoing dedication to cultural heritage.

‘The Equestrian Portrait of Charles I’, by Anthony van Dyck (The National Gallery, UK).

The Museum Volkenkunde is part of the National Museum of World Cultures, alongside the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Africa Museum in Berg en Dal. Together, the museums are custodians of the Dutch National Collection, with over 450,000 objects and 1,000,000 photographs from around the world. The National Museum of World Cultures recently discovered and acquired the unknown and unique screen, ‘View of Deshima in Nagasaki Bay’, by Japanese artist Kawahara Keiga. The work, a key record of Japanese-Dutch relations, cannot, in its current state, be shown to the public, nor can it travel. The condition of the screen requires a full restoration and, when the conservation process is complete, the screen will function as a gateway object introducing visitors to the full breadth of the Japan collections on Museum Volkenkunde, inviting them to gain a deeper understanding of life in Japan in the early 19th century and the unique role of the Dutch trade during that era. The National Gallery houses one of the world’s finest collections of paintings, attracting between 5 and 6 million visitors every year, who are taken on a journey through European art over seven

centuries, from the 13th century to the early 20th century. ‘Equestrian Portrait of Charles I’ by Anthony van Dyck, which requires a major programme of conservation and restoration, is a famous and much-loved work in the Gallery’s collection. The grant from TEFAF will support the cleaning and retouching of the painting, which is also currently undergoing structural treatment made possible by the Getty Foundation as part of its Conserving Canvas initiative. The structural treatment includes relining of this large-scale work by experts at the National Gallery, related training opportunities for mid-career professionals, and a culminating workshop to share project results with specialists in the field. Presentations about each project will be displayed at TEFAF Maastricht. Visit www.tefaf.com to find to find out more about TEFAF’s Museum Restoration Fund. MAASTRICHT GUIDE

Location Bureau Europa Until 24.03.2019 This exhibition features the remarkable work of three stuccatori: Tomaso Vasalli, Joseph Moretti, and Pieter Nicolaas Gagini. Born and raised around Lake Lugano, they migrated in the 18th Century to the region we now call the Euregion, where they decorated interiors with the ornamental stucco popular at that time. Their work has been well preserved in Maastricht, Aachen, Liège, and Eupen and since the 1990s it has been restored and studied with renewed knowledge and vigour.

Location Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht Until 21.04.2019 World-renowned British photographer Levon Biss has created a series of prints of insects, each of which has been made up of thousands of photographs taken with a macro lens. Featuring miniscule animals that we are sometime barely able to see with the naked eye, now towering up to three metres high. The result is amazing. You can see the intense colours and structures of these creatures, down to the very smallest detail. Insects have never been photographed in this way before.

David Lynch, Someone is in my House Location Bonnefantenmuseum Until 28.04.2019 The Bonnefantenmuseum presents the extensive retrospective Someone is in my House, by the American artist David Lynch. Although David Lynch is undoubtedly a pivotal figure in the international film and TV world, his work as a visual artist is not nearly as well-known. This is strange, to say the least, as Lynch has always stressed that he sees himself primarily as a visual artist; a visual artist who came into contact with the medium of film during his studies at the art academy by chance. This encounter formed the basis for his career as film director. Alongside his work as a director, Lynch has always remained active as a visual artist and in recent decades has created a vast oeuvre of paintings, drawings, lithos, photos, lamp sculptures, music and installations. www.bonnefanten.nl

least, as Lynch has always stressed that he sees himself primarily as a visual artist; a visual artist who came into contact with the medium of film during his studies at the art academy by chance. This encounter formed the basis for his career as film director. Alongside his work as a director, Lynch has always remained active as a visual artist and in recent decades has created a vast oeuvre of paintings, drawings, lithos, photos, lamp sculptures, music and installations. Up to now, this oeuvre has seldom been exhibited in museums.

It is not only the first museum exhibition of Lynch’s visual art in the Netherlands, but also the largest retrospective ever, comprising over 500 works by the artist. Although Lynch is undoubtedly a pivotal figure in the international film and TV world, his work as a visual artist is not nearly as wellknown. This is strange, to say the

A lot of churches had to be rebuilt and redecorated. These wood sculpturers often didn’t sign their works, therefore it remained unknown who the artists were, so the artists were given a provisional name; ‘Master of Elsloo’ being the most commonly known provisional name. Basquiat: The Artist and His New York Scene

Basquiat: The Artist and His New York Scene tells the story of the young Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988). It shows his development in the early 1980s in New York, from graffiti artist to painter of world renown. The exhibition follows Basquiat in different stages of his young life and shows his environment as well as works by New York contemporaries.

Basquiat in the apartment, 1981. Photograph by Alexis Adler. Basquiat Before Basquiat: East 12th Street, 1979-1980 is organised by Museum of Contemporary Art Denver.

The story begins around 1977. Basquiat and his friend, artist Al Diaz, have been making the rounds in New York’s East Village and SoHo as graffiti artists. Their wall texts, tagged with SAMO© start to attract attention. These are enigmatic and witty statements about society. In 1979 and 1980, Basquiat shares a flat with his then girlfriend Alexis Adler in the East Village of New York. His urge to express himself spreads from the street to the interior of their flat. The walls and even the doors, radiator, TV and refrigerator are the targets of his artistic expression. This part of the exhibition comprises Basquiat Before Basquiat: East 12th Street, 1979–1980, a presentation that was organised and curated by the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (MCA). On the initiative of artists’ collective COLAB (Collaborative Projects Inc.), The Times Square Show takes place in 1980 in a vacant massage parlour at Times Square, then a notorious neighbourhood in New York. It is Basquiat’s first public exhibition and one which marked not only his own breakthrough but also that of artists Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Nan Goldin, Kiki Smith, Tom Otterness and many others. After The Times Square Show, Basquiat takes to painting on canvas. From that moment, various gal-

leries in New York and Europe start noticing his work. The same can be said of Hans Sonnenberg, owner of the Gallery Delta in Rotterdam. In 1982, Basquiat’s paintings were featured in an early European solo exhibition at Gallery Delta. Basquiat: The Artist and His New York Scene concludes with a selection of Basquiat’s masterpieces. Why not combine your visit to TEFAF with a visit to Cube? Cube focuses on design that offers solutions for human ambitions and great and small needs, as well as new insights. The exhibitions in Cube show design by national and international designers; designs that have an impact on our world and makes you question your perspective on daily life. WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE LUXURY? In the eternal quest for more and better, luxury seems to be the highest good. A golden watch wrapped around your wrist, a unique piece of art purchased at TEFAF or a social media detox‌ Luxury is often associated with adjectives as expensive, scarcely and authentic, but nowadays luxury comes in many shapes and forms. Have you ever wondered what your ultimate luxury is? In Cube’s current exhibition LUXURY? Changing desires you are invited to make a personal journey along surprising objects that evoke titillating questions, tough dilemmas and personal choices about the subject of luxury. For how do the growing environmental and social inequality, the scarcity of raw material and changing Zeitgeist relate to the traditional sense of luxury? In addition to the objects, experts in the field of luxury and design predicted the luxury of tomorrow. LUXURY? Changing desires is on display until 14 April 2019.

Restoration of paintings from royal Palace Het Loo goes live ! period rooms and the immense murals in the central staircase will be restored in Maastricht and respectively on location.

Stichting Restauratie Atelier Limburg (SRAL), based in Maastricht, invites visitors of TEFAF to have a close look at the conservation process of wall hangings and paintings from the royal Palace Het Loo. This project will be presented in SRAL’s Open Studio in the Bonnefantenmuseum. During TEFAF, one of the paintings will be displayed in the Chapeau /Maastricht Region stand (TEFAF nr. 708) The 17th century Palace Het Loo was built as a summer residence for the Orange dynasty. In 1984, the palace became a museum. Because of the current three year renovation and expansion of the building, to be finished in 2021, many objects from the collection are undergoing restoration. Therefore, the museum has concluded a partnership agreement with SRAL. Paintings from several

Eye-catchers are the beautifully painted canvas wall hangings from the so-called ‘Audience Hall’ and Prince Bernhard’s private drawing room. Bernhard, husband of former Dutch Queen Juliana, in 1952 personally purchased the wall hangings that were originally painted by Dirk Dalens III for the country house ‘Huis Hoenlo’ in Olst in The Netherlands. The paintings, dating from 1720, represent romantic Arcadian landscapes with figural staffage, hunting scenes and imaginary Roman architecture. The drawing room will be visible again from 2021 onwards. Conservation of the paintings proved necessary. The treatment will include surface cleaning, varnish removal and

retouching of damages. As an internationally oriented conservation studio and heritage expertise center for the Province of Limburg, SRAL explicitly promotes public engagement. Therefore, sharing the conservation process and research discoveries with the TEFAF community provides a wonderful opportunity. In 32 years, SRAL developed into the largest independent fine art conservation studio and research center in The Netherlands and is located next to the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. The institute specializes in the conservation of paintings, polychrome sculpture, modern and contemporary art, murals and painted decorations in historic interiors. A broad diversity of museums, keepers of monuments and private collectors find their way to SRAL, also for the examination of works of art through X-ray photography, infrared imaging techniques and paint sample analyses. In collaboration with the University of Amsterdam, SRAL contributes to the education and training of conservators in The Netherlands. We also offer courses for students of the faculty of Science and Humanities at Maastricht University. Support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation enables us to even train young professionals from Indian museums. Thanks to a substantial grant from the Getty Foundation, the institute will be able to deliver courses to an

international group of mid-career conservators. These courses, to be organised in 2019, will focus on innovative lining techniques for canvas paintings, developed by SRAL.

Please, meet us in the Open Studio in the Bonnefantenmuseum or at the stand of Chapeau / Maastricht Region (nr. 708). For special requests, you are invited to make an appointment and visit our studios. info@sral.nl

Niente è facile e nulla è impossibile Chef Dino Bagnato had previously fallen in love with Maastricht working at the kitchen of the famous restaurant Mediterraneo. His partner Diana also learned the tricks of the trade working there as a host. Eager to set up their own restaurant, the couple went to Maasmechelen – and the name ‘Il Fiore’ was born. After many years gaining a great deal of experience, Dino and Diana have now returned to Maastricht and brought ‘Il Fiore’ with them. The building on Kesselskade, previously home to Rantrée, now offers authentic Italian cuisine. Averse to culinary fads, this establishment is all about timeless flavours, with delicious delights such as creamy burrata, fresh sea urchin, and caviar set ingredients on the menu. ‘We feel at home in Maastricht and we have no plans to leave,’ says a very enthusiastic Dino. Diana adds: ‘There’s no doubt that Maastricht is a fantastic city when it comes to shopping and dining. We receive many guests from Hasselt, Liège, Aachen, and – of course – the Maastricht region, and we’re sure we’ll attract even more.’

67 MAASTRICHT CITY GUIDE 2019 HISTORIC MAASTRICHT AND LIMBURG

Historic Maastricht and Limburg

What Maastricht lacks in size it more than makes up for in cultural-historic significance. Walking through Maastricht is like stepping into a history book and gives you a real taste of the city and region. Enjoy a stroll through and an excursion in historic Maastricht.

Maastricht St. Janskerk (St. John’s Church) The striking red tower on Vrijthof square in Maastricht is part of the distinctive St. Janskerk (St. John’s Church). This fifteenth-century Protestant church is located next to the Roman Catholic St. Servaaskerk (St. Servatius Church) and is one of the most significant historical sites in the city. The Gothic-style building still serves as a church to this day, but is also used as a venue for concerts and festivals. Those who aren’t afraid of a steep climb to the top of the tower will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the city. Sint Servaasbasiliek (Basilica of St. Servatius) The Sint Servaasbasiliek (Basilica of St. Servatius) is considered one of the oldest churches in the Netherlands and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Archaeological excavations around the current building expose the remains of the church’s earliest members, dating back to the fourth century. At that time, the church served as the burial chapel of St. Servatius, the first bishop of Maastricht, who died in the city. The church also boasts a rich collection of valuable relics, including the shrine of St. Servatius. 68

Dominicanen Bookshop The thirteenth-century Dominicanenkerk (Dominican Church), located on the square of the same name, originally served as a monastery church. In the centuries that followed, the church held various functions, ranging from an exhibition location to a carnival venue. . The church is now a bookshop, with a thirty-metre-long steel structure that serves as a grandiose bookcase spanning two floors. In 2018, British newspaper The Guardian dubbed the Dominicanen ‘the most beautiful bookshop in the world.’ Eiffel Building The stunning Eiffel Building on Boschstraat in Maastricht symbolizes the city’s rich industrial past. In the first half of the twentieth century, a prominent building was erected where the old city wall once stood. Until 2006, this building housed the Koninklijke Sphinx ceramics factory. The Eiffel Building is now located in one of the most popular and vibrant areas in Maastricht. Jeker quarter The Jeker quarter is a bustling neighbourhood in Maastricht, where past and present converge. The area is known for its beautiful churches, historic homes, and remnants of the medieval city wall. The Jeker quarter is a hotspot for art, culture, and traditional Maastricht hospitality. Dozens of cosy cafés, trendy

clothing stores, and art galleries make this area the place to be in Maastricht. It is also home to the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts, the Maastricht Academy of Music, and the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts. Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek (Basilica of Our Lady) The small and cosy Onze Lieve Vrouweplein square is home to the basilica of the same name, which was built in 1000 AD. In the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the church was expertly restored by renowned architect Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum. The basilica is known for its impressive westwork, its Romanesque capitals, and its Star of the Sea chapel. It remains a spiritual haven to this day, serving as a place of quiet contemplation and reflection for believers from all over the region. Helpoort (Hell’s Gate) One of the most striking buildings in the Jeker quarter is the gate in the old city wall, known as Helpoort or Hell’s Gate. Built to defend the city against hostile armies, the gate dates back to the thirteenth century, which makes it the oldest city gate in the Netherlands. Opposite Helpoort, just outside the city walls, is the Pesthuys (Plague House) – an eighteenth-century water mill that served as a paper factory. The name refers to the nearby barracks

that were used to care for plague victims, although the building itself was never used as a plague house.

Euregion Aachen Cathedral Just across the German border, near the tri-border area, is the historic city of Aachen. The Romans and the Celts once called this city home, as did Charlemagne in the eighth century. He also died here and was interred in a sarcophagus in the stunning ‘Dom’ (cathedral). The Dom also houses an impressive collection of religious statues and reliefs, paintings, drawings, prints, books, and manuscripts in the cathedral’s treasury. C-Mine Genk Just across the Belgian border, a short thirty-minute drive from Maastricht, is the former industrial city of Genk. A cultural breeding ground was created on and around the former coal mine of Winterslag. The distinctive buildings in neoclassical and neo-Flemish Renaissance style date from 1912-1925 and have all been repurposed. They now house a design academy, a cinema, dozens of trendy restaurants, and an interactive museum that brings the local mining history to life. MAASTRICHT GUIDE

‘DE WERELDBURGER’ (The world citizen)

Viviane Swennen is an artist from the Belgian region of Limburg. She grew up in Wijshagen, a small countryside village, within a very creative family. It was actually her father that inspired her to develop her creative mind. “he was always working with his hands, creating things, repairing things and making things” Viviane explains. “When I was a little girl, I started making sculptures from sand and clay.” However, it was not until the late eighties before she started developing her art. Throughout the years, she created ‘De Wereldburger’ (the world citizen), it started off with a young man on a globe holding the world, but developed into an art piece with deeper meanings. “I have always had a connection with the people from Pompeii. The struggle they had to survive when the Vesuvius erupted and the many people who did not make it”.

Most of her artwork is made for and inspired by her clients. “I always talk to my clients before I start working on a piece. Most of them have specific wishes, so from there I create personalized artwork, combined with my personal touch”. All her globes carry a little heart inside. “Art with a heart”, Viviane says. Vivianes trademark globes travel around the world. “I have clients from all over the world, so my ‘little world citizens’ become actual world travellers!”. Viviane has her own gallery at her house in Wijshagen, however, her art can be admired on different places such as hotels, restaurant, galleries and other public places. “The Kruisheren Hotel in Maastricht has been displaying and selling my art for quite some years, which has led to a wide, international audience”.

Want to admire Viviane’s art? Check out her online gallery at www.dewereldburger.be or visit the actual gallery in Wijshagen. You can also book an appointment via info@dewereldburger.be

What makes this small city so great is that all of the shops are located in close proximity to one another. It also has a friendly and pleasant atmosphere. MAASTRICHT GUIDE

Maastricht values TEFAF as a leading international event A history of culture

The city council is keenly aware of the significance of TEFAF for Maastricht and the surrounding region. According to economic studies, the international art fair has generated an estimated 15 to 25 million euros, with hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, and supply companies reaping the most benefits. Vivianne Heijnen, chairperson of the municipal executive committee for Economic Affairs, is not surprised at how willing the city is to facilitate the art fair by making the

MECC available as the event venue and by ensuring that the city can accommodate the thousands of international visitors who flock here each year. ‘Maastricht may not be as big as other major cities, but its unique location, its historic atmosphere, and its modern facilities make it an attractive venue for top international events.’ With an international university, a university hospital, and a health campus, Maastricht is quickly de-

Vivianne Heijnen, chairperson of the municipal executive committee for Economic Affairs.

veloping into a knowledge hub. The region focuses on international products and services and combines a modern economy with an excellent quality of life. ‘We are the perfect combination of beauty and brains,’ says Heijnen. As an example, she points to the close collaboration with the province of Limburg, particularly in the

economic sector. ‘Together we are investing heavily in innovation, which is starting to pay off.’ It’s an advantage for the service sector that many people in Maastricht and the surrounding area are multilingual, which reinforces the international nature of the city. TEFAF also aligns with the city’s ambitions in the field of tourism. While Maastricht is popular among day tourists, the city wants to shift its focus towards multi-day visits. ‘We call it high-quality tourism, as quality is of the utmost importance. TEFAF fits this ambition perfectly.’

Jim Janssen, alderman of Maastricht

Maastricht is the second-ranking cultural city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam, which says a lot about the city where TEFAF was born. With three performing arts companies (Toneelgroep Maastricht, the South Netherlands Philharmonic, and Opera Zuid), several institutes of international repute (the Maastricht Academy of Music, the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts, the Jan van Eyck Academy, and the Academy of Fine Arts), Theater aan het Vrijthof, and several museums, Maastricht has plenty to offer. But that’s not all. Alderman Jim Janssen is pleased with the arrival of the Muziekgieterij, which will soon become the largest music venue in the region. A new cultural district is cropping up around the Bassin on the northern side of the Parisian-looking Boschstraat, home to art house cinema Lumière, Bureau Europa, and the Timmerfabriek. ‘We are considering developing a new location for Zuyd University of Applied Sciences here to house its cultural programmes and a permanent rehearsal room for the philharmonic orchestra.’

Maastricht will continue to invest in culture and in the rich cultural heritage the city treasures. Theater aan het Vrijthof recently underwent an extensive restoration and now meets the latest acoustic standards. There are also plans to create a new central hall and living labs for such themes as dance, film, and ‘making’. The latter is a tribute to Maastricht’s history as a manufacturing city, particularly its earthenware and porcelain factories. The Limburg capital also plans to intensify its collaboration with the region, including the cities of Heerlen, Sittard, Hasselt, Liège, and Aachen. ‘Maastricht shapes culture and culture shapes Maastricht. To us, this is the perfect environment for TEFAF.’

Maastricht goes greener with sustainable transport

The annual visitors to TEFAF Maastricht have seen the traffic situation in and around the city undergo major changes, with the most prominent developments being the innovative double-layer tunnel on the A2 motorway and the relocation of Noorderbrug bridge. These have made sure that traffic to MECC and the city flows much more smoothly. ‘But Maastricht and the surrounding region have even bigger ambitions. Visitors are now familiar with maastrichtbereikbaar.nl, which provides travel information. Our next major objective is to make

transport more sustainable, as this will not only improve accessibility, but also lead to better air quality and quality of life in the city,’ says Gert-Jan Krabbendam, chairman of the Maastricht Bereikbaar steering group and of Maastricht’s municipal executive committee for Climate & Energy and Mobility. He works closely with Louis Prompers from Maastricht Bereikbaar. Since last year, the director of the A2 Maastricht project office has also been acting as the ad interim programme manager of Maastricht Bereikbaar. Prompers believes that this public-private partnership is essential if real change is to be achieved: ‘The national government, the Province of Limburg, and the Municipality of Maastricht are all encouraging employees and others to travel differently. We are working closely with employers in South Limburg, interest groups, knowledge institutes, and mobility service providers.’ Maastricht Bereikbaar has a num-

ber of focal areas. For example, it is encouraging cycling in the city – already a popular means of transport in the Netherlands – and is now also focusing on campaigns with e-bikes (electric bicycles) and how to combine these with public transport and the Park & Ride network. Behaviour change campaigns are also being rolled out to encourage residents, employees, and visitors to change how they travel. At the same time, in order to stimulate more sustainable driving, employers are being encouraged to upgrade lease contracts for petrol or diesel cars to contracts for electric cars. A campaign to create a car-sharing scheme with employers’ electric cars is also in the pipeline. Making sure car tyres are at the right pressure is a relatively simple yet efficient way to reduce CO2 emissions and drive more safely and fuel-smart, so Maastricht Bereikbaar is organizing specific campaigns targeted at this throughout city and at employers’ offices.

Krabbendam aims to create a climate-neutral city: ‘Supplying stock to city-centre shops is increasingly becoming a question of smart, sustainable logistics, so that the streets in the mornings aren’t packed with heavy trucks delivering goods and emitting exhaust fumes.’ Working together with Maastricht Bereikbaar, we encourage smarter, more sustainable logistics and try to reduce CO2 emissions.’ Maastricht Bereikbaar helps companies in the city centre work together, while the A2 Maastricht project office supplies the knowledge and expertise we’re looking for. This array of initiatives will help Maastricht and the surrounding region remain attractive for residents and visitors in the future.

Gouvernement aan de Maas – a provincial building with artistic flair The power of imagination is the source of all progress

The more than 1,300 works of art owned by the province of Limburg not only reflect its unique history, they also stimulate, connect, and encourage reflection. Art pushes and crosses boundaries. It is a daily source of inspiration for everyone who works at or visits Gouvernement aan de Maas, Limburg’s provincial government building. Below, four members of the Provincial Executive of Limburg discuss the works of art that have inspired them the most. The balance between power, market, and morality is the essence of government administration and politics. Within this realm, there is room for doubt and for empathy – room to push the bounda-

ries of the familiar. The convergence with art contributes to this by placing things in a historical context, by provoking, stimulating, stirring, or telling stories. Visual art has been an integral part of Gouvernement aan de Maas since the very first architectural sketches. Former governor and ‘master builder’ Sjeng Kremers was responsible for this, along with architects Gerard and Boudewijn Snelder and designer Dick Elffers. Kremers envisioned a marriage between economy and culture. Works of art were purchased for the new building, and Kremers initiated the Trajecta art event, which served as an artistic platform for the province of Limburg.

Artwork: De Lotusbloem (‘The Lotus Flower’) Artist: Marijke de Goey (1947, Utrecht) in collaboration with ipv Delft creative engineers Location: N274 motorway near Schinveld in the municipality of Beekdaelen

Eric Geurts, member of the Provincial Executive responsible for Mobility, Urban Development, and Tourism ‘When you enter the Parkstad from Germany, you can’t miss it: the new cycle bridge near the roundabout in Schinveld. It’s a landmark, a real work of art. While an engineer may have opted for a perpendicular crossing, Marijke de Goey designed a diagonal crossing topped with a multifaceted sculpture. The airy, cubic structure looks different depending on the angle. It changes constantly. It’s dynamic. To me, it represents the dynamism of Parkstad: a region that is constantly in transition, constantly

reinventing itself. The bridge and the first part of the sculpture receive and welcome you. It’s the gateway to Parkstad. The 260-metre-long bridge also symbolizes a new perspective on mobility – one in which cyclists, not motorists, play the leading role. I’m proud that we, along with the municipality of Beekdaelen and IBA Parkstad, had the courage to select this work of art over a more traditional cycle bridge. It adds something exciting to the landscape. It’s a bridge with spirit.’

Joost van den Akker, member of the Provincial Executive responsible for Economics and Knowledge Infrastructure ‘The bust of King Willem-Alexander in the Statenzaal room is more than just a representation of our head of state. Its creation, which I had the pleasure of experiencing up close, makes it a very special work of art to me. As a member of a special provincial committee, I was asked to help select an artist to create a bust of the new king for the Statenzaal room, following the abdication of Queen Beatrix in 2013. We opted for well-known Maastricht sculptor Appie Drielsma – an excellent choice, given the outcome. Unfortunately, Drielsma fell ill shortly after completing the design and passed away in 2014. Fortunately, his vision was car-

ried out by three people who were very close to him. His assistant, his trusted brazier, and his widow Gemma Drielsma-Serpenti ensured that the bust was completed in line with the artist’s vision and wishes. A fascinating documentary was made about the creation of this sculpture. The pedestal is inscribed with a quote from Willem-Alexander’s inaugural address: Ik wil verbindingen leggen (‘I want to make connections.’). I think this quote is extremely significant; in fact, it motivates me in my work at the Provincial Executive every day.’

Artwork: The Things They Carried / The Double Artist: Roy Villevoye (1960, Maastricht) Location: provincial archaeological depot De Vondst in Heerlen

Hans Teunissen, member of the Provincial Executive responsible for Spatial Planning and Education ‘I saw this work of art for the first time during the exhibition The Materiality of the Invisible, held during the annual meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists in late 2017 at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. I was instantly captivated. I think I was most moved by the narrative. You can only see this work as a statue, a statue that invites the viewer to piece together its story. What makes the sculpture so fascinating is its incredibly lifelike quality. I was really moved by the exhibition as a whole; by the wax sculpture, the letter, and the video. The ensemble is what made it so special to me. You can see the mis-

sionary from Papua New Guinea come to life through memories, speculations, and stories. It’s like archaeology in reverse: first the stories, then something tangible. At De Vondst, we want to connect archaeology to the present, to art and culture. We want to bridge the gap between archaeologists, restorers, and the public. I think this work of art does just that. It can be appreciated by anyone. It speaks to the imagination and sparks curiosity, which is exactly what our society needs.’

Ger Koopmans, member of the Provincial Executive responsible for Finance, Sport, and Culture ‘My first thought on seeing this impressive work of art was how intense a representation it is of the suffering of Christ. It’s massive – 227 centimetres long – and extremely detailed. The bowed head with its heavy crown of thorns, the tall, emaciated body with its jutting ribcage, the facial expression: you don’t have to be religious to be deeply impressed by this incredible work of art. Research has ascribed it to the famous sixteenth-century woodcarver Jan van Steffeswert. What makes this sculpture so special is that the original polychrome has been so impeccably preserved. That makes it even more valuable. Over the years, thirteen new layers of paint

have been added to the walnut wood carving. These are now being removed with a scalpel by restoration experts from Stichting Restauratieatelier Limburg. Visitors to the Bonnefanten Museum can follow this extensive restoration first-hand. The work of art is extremely relevant to Western European art history. It’s a masterpiece, and I’m proud that the province has helped to make its restoration possible. I also think it’s wonderful that a work of art from a Limburg artist is being restored by a celebrated restoration studio in Limburg.’

Brightlands: knowledge crossing borders

Borders can be explored or crossed, respected or pushed. At Brightlands, we want our knowledge to cross borders. In today’s world, we are facing major challenges and transitions that determine the quality of life for everyone. Brightlands focuses on four of these challenges every day: sustainability, health, digitization, and nutrition. Brightlands in the Dutch province of Limburg is an international community of nearly 21,000 ambitious entrepreneurs, researchers, and students with a national and international focus. They are affiliated with start-ups, SMEs, multinationals, and knowledge institutions. These skilled members draw on their industry-specific expertise to share knowledge and experiences across disciplines. They do so in fields where science enriches market developments on the

Brightlands campuses: open environments where entrepreneurs, scientists, and students develop new innovations, learn from their failures, and achieve international breakthroughs. Given these distinct specializations, it comes as no surprise that more and more entrepreneurs, researchers, and students are finding their way to Brightlands. Here, they can achieve their ambitions in an ideal campus environment with stateof-the-art facilities and plenty of room for talent development. Innovation and competitiveness are strengthened by a superb scientific

climate. While this can be described in words, it can also be expressed as a mathematical formula: entrepreneurship x science = innovation. Our community of ‘Brightlanders’ and many others benefit from the unique ecosystem and international location of the province of Limburg, situated at the heart of the Eindhoven-Leuven-Aachen technology triangle. This area is borderless in terms of geography, ambition, knowledge, and collaboration. It is a region that achieves outstanding results that strengthen the economy and boost new business, from idea to product and from promise to success. A strong concept built on a solid foundation of initiators from the province of Limburg, Maastricht University, Maastricht UMC+, Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, Fontys University of Applied Sciences, DSM, and APG. Borderless thinking will open up new worlds to you. This is particularly true in the Brightlands fields of sustainability, health, digitization, and nutrition – and endless combinations of all four. It all happens at Brightlands. Together, we develop global solutions that lead to new possibilities. Knowledge crossing borders: for you, for the world, for tomorrow.
