2024 marked 20 years since the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and North Lee Community Foundation founders dreamed of what could happen if they pooled their resources and worked with others to resolve their community’s challenges and build on their community’s strengths. The mission they embraced was to give back to Lee County, create leaders, and promote nonprofit organizations. By having this paramount goal to guide them, they created the first community foundations in Lee County with the vision of creating a timeless legacy of giving for good and for all.
Two decades later, the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and North Lee Community Foundation continues to embody the mission of our founders. Since our founding, more than 200 fund holders have played their part in building the Foundations by creating permanent charitable funds that form our endowment assets. In addition to our fund holders, many volunteers, committee and board members, and nonprofit leaders have partnered with us to evolve our mission forward. In 2024 alone, those funds infused more than 2 million in grants and scholarships across Southeast Iowa.
Each of these people are a thread in the tapestry that begun in 2004, and each has helped weave the Foundations into a permanent resources that is uniquely situated to meet the needs of the communities we serve. Looking forward, we know that people who haven’t ever been born yet will add their own texture, color, and design before our next 20, 40, or even 100 years is through. They will build on what has come before and address needs, challenges and opportunities in our community that we can’t even imagine from where we sit today.

We are inspired by the example of those that came before us; whether it has been Dick Lofton’s heart for giving, George Eichacker’s generosity, Joe Kowzan’s community building, Lawerence Matteson’s belief in education or Ivan Hasselbusch’s keen financial prowess.

RICHARD&DOLORESLOFTON
Richard and Dolores Lofton lived an outsized life and had an outsized impact in just about every way. From their family to their careers, to their faith, to their friends, Richard (Dick) and Dolores (Dee) created pillars of leadership, happiness and grace for the Keokuk Community they loved and cherished.
“If only you could sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to people you may never even dream of, there is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.”
Richard’s vast involvement in his community included serving as President of the Keokuk Area Hospital Board and being honored as the first recipient of the Spirit of Keokuk Award for overall community involvement. Affiliations with the Masons, Jaycees, and Rotary further demonstrated Richard’s commitment to community service. As a member of First Christian Church in Keokuk, where he served as an elder, teacher, and Chairman of the Board, Richard’s support and guidance was of great benefit to both the local and greater church. It was Richard’s leadership to the Keokuk Area Community Foundation that created a foundation of giving for Southeast Iowa.
Dee was a "doer." Supporting her community of Keokuk, as well as the First Christian Church (FCC) in Keokuk, was a priority for Dee, and her love for the arts was at the forefront of her volunteerism. She was a board member for the Keokuk Concert Association, worked with the Keokuk Fine Arts Council as president and secretary, and served as a member of that board for 16 years.
Although Dick and Dolores are gone, what they left to Keokuk will be forever be embedded in the vision of Keokuk Area Community Foundation. Community, gratitude, faith, friendship, family and giving back. The Lofton's are the outsized pillars of our mission and their legacy will continue for good, forever.
ALEGACY OF GIVING
IVAN HASSELBUSCH
Ivan Hasselbusch’s love of Keokuk and Iowa echoed in his professional, personal and philanthropic life. As a proud University of Iowa Graduate, Ivan’s CPA career would take him all around the world, but it was his work at Roquette in Keokuk that provided a meaningful community embrace. In Keokuk, Ivan’s passions included continuously growing better at the game of golf, and meticulously maintaining his lawn.
As a community leader, Ivan devoted his time to lending his vast amount of knowledge in either a spreadsheet or keenly explaining accounting to anyone who would listen which, well, was just about everyone.
As a philanthropic leader, Ivan Hasselbusch was the architect of the Keokuk Community Foundation’s financial success. Through his keen financial experience and leadership, Ivan received the honor of Board Director Emeritus of the Keokuk Area Community Foundation in 2021. We join with the Keokuk and Solon communities in remembering and honoring Ivan’s life and legacy as a philanthropic leader
The Hasselbusch Family Fund will continue to support the charitable passions of Ivan and Bonnie Hasselbusch by supporting Keokuk nonprofit organizations through the Eichacker / Lofton Grant Fund.
ROBERT DICKEY
A true Renaissance Man, Robert Dickey was a beloved leader, economist, writer, tennis player, lawyer and philanthropist. As a graduate of Keokuk High School and the University of Iowa, Bob flourished in his beloved Keokuk by practicing law at Smith, Dickey, and Smith Lawfirm and presiding as the County Attorney of Lee County for 16 years. Bob’s true joys were always the outdoors, traveling and playing tennis into his 90’s.
After his wife Peggy’s passing in 2015, Bob created the first scholarship at the Keokuk Area Community Foundation: The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship which awards funding to Keokuk High School Students annually.
OWEN “MARTY” FOX
Marty Fox’s caring heart shined upon Keokuk in many ways. As successful business owner at Decker Manufacturing, Marty also provided leadership and support to military vets and grieving families through the Grief Share Program in Keokuk. Because of his community leadership, Marty joined the Keokuk Area Community Foundation Board of Directors for two terms where he volunteered on the Grant Committee for many years. Marty’s legacy of giving continues through Jacquey and Terra Fox Charitable Fund which supports St, Jude Children’s Hospital.

One of the founders of North Lee Community Foundation in 2005, Joe was in so many ways the “heart and soul” of the North Lee Community Foundation.
At the Community Foundation, we work alongside great leaders and very generous people and Joe was the epitome of leadership, service and philanthropy.
In addition to the North Lee Community Foundation, here is how Joe served: he served on the boards of the Sheaffer Memorial Golf Course, Lee County Charitable Fund, Fort Madison Chamber of Commerce, Fort Madison Economic Development Corporation, Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission and the Fort Madison YMCA board and he was a founding member of Team Gnarly cycling club and rode in ten RAGBRAI events.
He annually distributed funds from the Kowzan Family Foundation to charitable organizations and always spoke with pride and love speaking about one of the most important organizations in Lee County; Emma Cornelis House.
AND, so as to never forget this great man: Joe believed that the two most important days in our life is the day we are born and the day we discover why. He felt that our life was a journey in trying to discover why we are thankful to be born in the greatest country in the world. He believed in stewardship in sharing your time, talent and treasure. He was known for his sense of humor and was always telling stories and quotes to his grandchildren. He deeply loved his family. Thank you Joe for your life of service to Lee County.

Keokuk Students compose an essay that is reflective of their life and could receive a scholarship of up to $5,000. The inaugural scholarship recipient is Iowa State University bound Cooper Abfalter Dial.

In 2024, The Fort Madison operations of Climax Molybdenum, a subsidiary of Freeport McMoRan, created the Climax Molybdenum Scholarship for graduating high school seniors. Established in 2023 with North Lee Community Foundation, the Wilkerson Family Scholarship awards an annual scholarship to a exceptional academic Fort Madison High School Graduating Senior. The current recipient is Iowa State University bound Lucy Avevado.

With a grant from Lee County Charitable Fund, the City of Fort Madison purchased new safe expression swings for Settler and Victory Parks. The face-to-face interaction of expression swings helps build stronger parent-child relationships and enhances emotional well-being. The city believes that over 4,500 Lee County Families will benefit from these swings.
Through the Keokuk Area Community Foundation Grant Fund, the North Lee Community Foundation Grant Fund, Lee County Youth Services, Inc. and the Lee County Charitable Fund, we invest in Lee County, Hancock County and Clark County nonprofit organizations that contribute to improving the quality of life in our communities. ABEDFOREVERYCHILD
First Christian Church Keokuk began the “A Bed for Every Child” ministry in 2017. With donations and grants from the Lee County Charitable Fund, to date they have provided over 860 beds to area children who would otherwise have no bed of their own. Each bed comes complete with simple but sturdy frame, new mattress, and bedding. Twin beds or bunk beds are provided according to the family’s need. If necessary, we deliver and assemble the beds at the child’s home. All labor involved with the ministry is provided by volunteers from the church.
EICHACKER/LOFTONGRANTFUND
One of George Eichacker’s and Richard Lofton’s proudest achievements was being the founding fathers of the Keokuk Area Community Foundation. George and Richard established the Keokuk Area Community Foundation Grant Fund to support Keokuk Area organizations in arts and culture, community betterment, education, health, and human services.

Many moms have brought their children in to play and have been very surprised by our exhibits. They often exclaim things such as "This is so cool! I didn't know this was here!"
Lee County Youth Services, Inc. awarded the North Lee Historical Society funds to build an exbibit of a log cabin in Fort Madison. This exbibit included a garden, a historical trading post, train sets and pioneer wash stations. Prior to this project, zero children visited the museum. Since the grand opening, (which had 12 children in attendance) approximately 12 children have attended weekly. The North Lee Historical society is proud of the success, because the Fort Madison community now has a safe environment where children can play,

With all changes in Lee County Healthcare over the last few years, preparation and training have become key. The North Lee Community Foundation Grant Fund provided Lee County EMS grant funding to procure the iSimulate System for the Lee County. The iStimulate system is comprised of every EMS agency in Lee County (ambulance, fire departments, dispatch center) and allows the agencies to perform high-fidelity simulations with actual patient vitals and interact with equipment that we would use to treat our patients.
The iSimulate System directly impacted one transport EMS ambulance service (4 staffed ambulances 24/7) and 9 fire departments, just in Lee County. The total providers impacted are estimated at 200. However, each individual in Lee County dialing 911 will get the biggest impact because that their first responders are trained.
CLARKCOUNTYCOUNCILONAGING
The Senior Center of Clark County Missouri believes that providing socialization, and wonderful meals will nourish the body, mind and soul of its Clark County Seniors. Using grants awarded from Keokuk Area Community Foundation, the Clark County Senior Center provided seniors, handicapped, and low income seniors a nutritious meal Monday-Friday. Over 14,500 meals are served each year to the participates of the program.
PEACE,LOVE&ROOTS
Sometimes the best labor of love is feeding a community. the Peace Love and Roots Community Garden in Keokuk was built so people of all ages and abilities could take part in a hands-on gardening experience and to be able to provide a wider variety of produce to be grown and donated to the community. Through a community effort, and grant from Eichacker / Lofton Grant Fund, Peace, Love & Roots was able to give away an average of 250-275 pounds of vegetables back to the Keokuk Community.

HISTORY CENTER
Over the years the Historic Miller House in Keokuk has been a popular tourist location due to its Italianate architecture style and the former home to Abraham Lincoln Supreme Court Justice Samuel Freeman Miller. The Keokuk History Center hosts many programs throughout the year celebrating the history of the Miller House. With a grant from Eichacker / Lofton Grant Fund, the Keokuk History Center was able to remove the existing deteriorated porch floor and supports and replaced them with safe structures and appropriate surfaces.

CITY OF HAMILTON ANIMAL CONTROL
In 2024, Hancock County Illinois ended their animal control program, so the City of Hamilton stepped in to continue to take care of the stray animals. With a grant from the Eichacker / Lofton Grant Fund, The city was able to purchase and brand new building to house the animals until they are returned to their owners or adopted.

SOUTHEASTIOWASYMPHONYORCHESTRA
Enriching the lives of students through orchestral music performed at a high artistic level by skilled musicians in a disciplined ensemble is the passion of Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. Using a grant from Eichacker / Lofton Grant Fund, Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra performed a concert highlighting Dvorak’s 8th Symphony with guest student conductors from Ft. Madison Junior/Senior High School.

With a generous grant from the Lee County Youth Services, Inc., Argyle Community Boosters has really BOOSTED their baseball program. Before 2024, there were only 2 baseball team playing on field with little equipment. Since then Argyle Baseball has expanded to 6 teams and a refreshed baseball field. Over 1000 families attended the summer games.
