The many people who work with the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and North Lee Community Foundation have different interests, different passions and different stories, but the one commonality we all have is that we want to give locally, together, for good.

Some utilize the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and North Lee Community Foundation to support a specific charity, like the afternoon meals at YMCA Test Kitchen, or help people get a new start at the Domestic Violence Intervention Group Keokuk Serenity House.

Some prefer to support the maintenance of Gethsemane Cemetery, repair trails at Shimek State Forest Park or even help buy a tiny house door for Iowa 2x4’s. We also believe in cultural and education impacts like building the endowment of Keokuk Catholic Schools and supporting the Tuesday Market at Montrose Riverfront.

One of our most exciting accomplishments is providing over $500,000 a year in scholarships through our 23 scholarship funds, to students enriching their life in higher education. Every year, we award scholarships to future nurses, mechanics, farmers, teachers, and engineers. Together we have created a perpetual source of support benefiting generations of Lee County, Southeast Iowa, Northeast Missouri and Western Illinois students on their journey to college.

Each one of these grants, scholarships, partnerships, and gifts represent a heart touched, a legacy left, and an indelible mark made. Thank you and together, we will continue to make legacies of giving.

ADDRESSING A LEE COUNTY NEED In 2020, The Lee County Impact Grant was created by the Lee County Charitable Fund to provide a larger funding impact and address needs in our Lee County communities. In 2024, the City of Donnellson received the third $25,000 Lee County Impact Grant for the Westview Trails Project.

The Lee County Impact Grant will provide funding for a new 10-foot wide, half-mile long, limestone, multi-use trail that will connect to the existing sealcoat trail and traverse the southern portion of the park from west to east, before running northward along the eastern boundary.

This addition will complete a one-mile loop and link to the existing trail entrance near Burlington Street and Westwood Court. Residents of Donnellson will benefit from improved park facilities, offering enhanced opportunities for exercise, recreation and nature activities.

In addition to health benefits, the project is sufficient to enhance Donnellson's visibility. The improved amenities at Westview Park are expected to attract more events, such as the annual baseball, softball, and disc golf tournaments. Tourists traveling along the Historic Hills Scenic Byway or the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail will also be more inclined to stop at the park and explore Donnellson’s businesses and restaurants.

MOLLY HURLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Molly Hurley Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by friends and loved ones of Molly at the Keokuk Area Community Foundation. The goal of the Molly Hurley Memorial Scholarship Fund is to help cosmetology students to follow their dreams in honor of the late Molly Hurley. The current recipient is Warsaw High School Graduate, Delania Lambert.

“It became evident to me that true happiness stems from embracing one's unique identity and fostering a sense of self-worth. Inspired by Molly's legacy of kindness and empowerment, I am committed to paying it forward. PEGGY DICKEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Now in its 5th year, the Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship has awarded more than $20,000 in scholarships to Keokuk High School Students.

The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship opens every year in October. The Peggy Dickey Memorial Scholarship is a renewable scholarship for four years. The application opens January 1.

GERALDINE BOYD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND The Geraldine Boyd Memorial Scholarship Fund awards annual scholarships to eligible full-time students in the nursing program at Southeastern Community College. To date, over $40,000 has been awarded to 20 Southeast Iowa Nursing Students. The current scholarship recipients are Megan Cook, Olivia Rule, Chance Weakley, London Wray, Millie Larson, Zach Meyers, and Kaelyn Ferrill. SPEECH SCHOLARSHIP FUND Established in 2023, the Donald & Bonnie Hoenig Speech Scholarship is a scholarship fund of North Lee Community Foundation. Throughout her life, Bonnie Hoenig of Fort Madison Iowa, had a passion for children who experienced speech challenges in their education and life. The Donald and Bonnie Hoenig Speech Scholarship honors the life of Bonnie Hoenig by providing scholarships for students seeking a degree in Speech Therapy /Speech Pathology, or any related field.

The Donald and Bonnie Hoenig Speech Scholarship Fund awards students who are currently attending or have graduated from any school in Southeast Iowa, which includes the following counties: Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Lee, Louisa, and Van Buren. The Donald and Bonnie Hoenig Speech Scholarship will also accept applications from students residing in the Illinois Counties of Hancock, Henderson, and Adams. Finally, the Donald and Bonnie Hoenig Speech Scholarship will accept applications from students residing in the Missouri Counties of Clark and Lewis.

ERIC PARDALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Eric Pardall Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship fund of North Lee Community Foundation and the Keokuk Area Community Foundation. It will be awarded each year to high school seniors, college students, and continuing education students that have graduated from Central Lee High School, Fort Madison High School, and Holy Trinity High School. The Eric Pardall Memorial Scholarship is offered to students pursuing careers in agriculture, automotive/diesel repair, construction, engineering, health care/medical/ nursing or any trade. Each of these renewable scholarships is $2,500.00 a year for four years.

The current recipients are Central Lee High School Graduates: Shanna Buford, Millie Larson, Josephine Newton, Sidney Gruntmeir, and Landon Rudd.

MIKE ROACH BUILDING TRADES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A staple of Southeast Iowa, Mike Roach had a passion for construction and teaching the trade to others. His family and friends honored his memory by establishing the Mike Roach Building Trades Scholarship at the North Lee Community Foundation in 2023.

Recipients of the Mike Roach Building Trades Scholarship are pursuing a career in the Building Trades Industry and are from Fort Madison. The first recipient of the Mike Roach Building Trades Scholarship is Fort Madison High School Graduate, Leif Boeding. Leif will be attending the University of Iowa.

A LIFE OF GIVING: GEORGE EICHACKER In July 2023, George Louis Donald Eichacker passed away, he was 93. As one of the founders of the Keokuk Area Community Foundation, George’s service and leadership enabled the foundation to flourish, grow and expand its reach far beyond Lee County.

George firmly believed in giving back to the community with time and money. He served as the managing trustee of several private charitable foundations. In 2007, the Keokuk Area Community Foundation named George as its first Director Emeritus in recognition of his role in the establishment of the foundation. We also honored George by creating the Eichacker Award for Philanthropy, which honors an individual or family for their sustained and generous commitment to philanthropy, charitable giving, and volunteer service in the Tri-State Area.

It was George’s vision and mission of giving that will always be remembered. He embodied the phrase “For Good For Ever” meaning our endowments and funds will provide grants and scholarships to organizations serving Lee County, Southeast Iowa, Western Illinois and Northeast Missouri for all time and forever.

UKRAINIAN REFUGEE FUNDS It would be difficult not to be aware of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the number of refugees this conflict has created. Many refugees have come to Southeast Iowa looking for a new life. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Des Moines County, the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and North Lee Community Foundation have hired Ukrainian Refugee, now Burlington resident, Iryna Bueck to help new Ukrainian Refugees adjust to life in Iowa. Supporting the new Southeast Iowa Refugees will be an ongoing focus, so please give at keokukfoundation.org/donate.

FORT MADISON FOOD PANTRY The purpose of the Fort Madison Food Pantry is to meet the needs of the food insecure citizens in our Lee County communities. With the increase of hunger of our friends and neighbors, The Fort Madison Food Pantry is always searching for additional resources to meet their project needs.

Every year, over 20,000 people use the Fort Madison Food Pantry to help feed their families. The Keokuk Area Community Foundation and North Lee Community are proud to have supported the Fort Madison Food Pantry in over $26,000 in grants since 2020.

MONTROSE FIRE & RESCUE It was an early morning when a house fire occurred. Very few firefighters responded. The fire was large and spreading very quickly.

Montrose Fire & Rescue were able to set up the monitor. The monitor allowed them to move to another location to continue battling the fire and trying to get it from spreading any further.

By using a grant from the Lee County Charitable Fund, the fire monitor allows the fighters to able to put water on a propane tank. The monitor prevents explosions while the department works to get the larger fires out. It is like having an extra person on each call, the monitor frees up manpower when they rely solely on volunteers.

CENTRAL LEE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT SOAR LEADERSHIP The CLHS Growing Leaders program is simply about growing good people. This program is a student lead program that focuses on social skills, employability skills, and life skills to better prepare high schoolers for life beyond high school. Schools are tasked with meeting the academic needs of students and providing resources to do so. It is also imperative that schools nurture social skills and leadership skills, guaranteeing graduates a successful transition post high school.

This grant from the Lee County Charitable Fund provided the Student SOAR Leadership Team funding to purchase curriculum and materials. These resources provide a variety of opportunities and activities for students to learn such skills in real world settings under teacher and administration supervision. KEOKUK SADDLE CLUB The Keokuk Saddle Club, serving Keokuk in Lee County since 1943, has made a comeback with a grand opening and new arena at Joyce Park. Since 2017, The Keokuk Saddle Club has been building, fundraising, and planning the new Joyce Park Arena. The Keokuk Area Community Foundation is proud to have supported the vision of the Keokuk Saddle Club with over $14,000 in grant funding since 2017.

KEOKUK CATHOLIC SCHOOLS "That was hard, but it's going to build my muscles!"

With a grant from the Keokuk Area Community Foundation Grant Fund, Keokuk Catholic Schools installed a new climbing wall in the school's gymnasium, specifically designed to cater to the needs and abilities of students in grades K-5. The climbing wall offers a safe, controlled environment that encourages physical fitness, problem-solving, and self-confidence.

Trained physical education instructors guide the students through climbing sessions, ensuring safety and effective learning. By incorporating the climbing wall into the physical education curriculum, the program is meeting the PE standards for learning.

With each ascent, the children reach new heights—both literally and figuratively— proving that they can overcome any obstacle standing in their way with determination and perseverance. And as they celebrate their successes together, they forge bonds of friendship and camaraderie that last a lifetime.

FORT MADISON YMCA / TEST KITCHEN Funded by many North Lee Community Foundation donors and grants, The YMCA Test Kitchen’s Music program is a threefold program, including Piano & Drum lessons, Friday Night Music Jam sessions and summer Music Day Camp. Piano & Drum lessons are offered to area 4th through 6th grade students in a group setting. An afterschool snack is provided then each student receives a 10–15-minute piano or drum lesson, group music theory lesson, and practice time. At the end of each lesson a hot nutritious meal is served to all.

FORT MADISON MEXICAN FIESTA For over 40 years, The Mexican Fiesta Committee has fostered Mexican pride, awarded scholarships and promoted cultural heritage in Lee County.

With a grant from Lee County Youth Services, The Mexican Fiesta Committee purchased books for the Fort Madison Library that promote social and cultural issues that give school age children a view into other ethnicities and cultures.

INDUSTRIAL OPPORTUNITIES, INC. / TWICE AS NEW The Keokuk Area Community Foundation is committed to making a charitable impact in Clark County Missouri. The Twice AS New Thrift Store is a community driven space that helps families in Clark County. With grant support from the Keokuk Area Community Foundation, Twice AS New Thrift Store was able to purchase items to help families that lost their homes and renovate the store. The store has now become more spacious, safer and able to accommodate more people.

IOWA 2X4’S FOR HOPE A community is built on the passion to help everyone. Iowa 2x4’s For Hope is a new organization that builds with passion and has passion for their community. With many volunteers, Iowa 2X4’s For Hope builds tiny homes for homeless veterans and last June, they completed their first home at 922 29th St. in Fort Madison. The Lee County Charitable Fund is proud to support Iowa 2x4’s For Hope in their continuing mission to build a future one board at a time.

MONTROSE TOWNSHIP HISTORICIAL SOCIETY On June 29, 2023, a derecho hit the small community of Montrose causing untold damage to buildings and trees. It blew down several trees on the grounds of St. Barnabas, including one which landed on the roof. To prevent further damage, the tree had to be promptly removed. With a grant from the Keokuk Area Community Foundation Grant Fund, Montrose Township Historical Society was able to repair the damage to the chapel, mend the tuck point and clean the dry rot at the front entrance of the chapel.

Continuing repairs are ongoing.

KEOKUK ART CENTER /POCKET PARK MURAL PROJECT “Our class of 2028 did a mural project for the city. This project is going to be a very nice thing for our community and will help bring people together.”

With support from a grant from Lee County Youth Services, Inc., artist Martha Neff, members of Keokuk Art Center and Main Street Keokuk created The Pocket Park Mural Project. This collaborative art project involved Keokuk Middle School Students creating and painting brightly crafted heart designs that personally reflected something important to them. These canvas squares will be combined to make a large mural in downtown Keokuk.

CREATING A LEGACY OF GIVING MARY JANE GOECKE MEMORIAL FUND The Keokuk Area Community Foundation honors the life of Mary Jane Goecke with the Mary Jane Goeke Memorial Fund. As a long time resident of Keokuk, Mary Jane was a passionate supporter of music and arts in Lee County and served on League of Women Voters, Mothers Study Club and The PEO Sisterhood. A gifted musician nurtured early in her life, Mary Jane sang and played piano and organ for numerous churches and organizations for over 70 years, often singing while playing. The Mary Jane Goeke Memorial Fund supports the music programs at All Saints Church.

SHEAFFER MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT IN MEMORY OF MICHAEL PHELAN The North Lee Community Foundation honors Fort Madison Native Michael Phelan. Mike was a community leader his whole life, and was a passionate volunteer at the Tri-State Rodeo and Sheaffer Golf Course. Mike established the Sheaffer Golf Course Foundation to give donors a charitable way support the course. Over the years, grants from Sheaffer Golf Course Foundation Endowment have improved landscaping and supported operational costs.

MIKE PRIBYL MEMORIAL FUND Mike Pribyl was a Keokuk community leader who had a passion for helping others and comforting everyone with his wonderful sense of humor. Mike was a valued Board Member of both the Keokuk Area Community Foundation and Lee County Charitable Fund. As a Grant Committee Chair for both organizations, Mike passionately assisted many Keokuk nonprofit organizations in receiving grants including: The Grand Theatre, the Domestic Violence Intervention Program Keokuk Serenity House, America’s Great Dam Foundation, and the Keokuk Public Library Foundation.
