Fill-a-Bag 2014 tops 18 tonnes for Salvation Army food bank
News - Sunday Dec. 7 was a cool sunny Sunday afternoon. Far and wide across North Grenville, youth, couples, scouts and cubs, teams of businesses people, and church groups were busy collecting full bags of groceries from porch steps and under mail boxes.
They were the feet and hands of the heart of the 2014 Fill-a-Bag program which brought the full bags to the “Old Giant Tiger Store” located across the street from the B&H Your Community Grocer. Inside the building was a hub of activity. Using the Oxford Street access, the
laden vehicles were met by eager volunteers, who helped move the groceries from the vehicles to the sorting room floor. The Kemptville Scouts did yeoman’s work lifting and arranging the heavy bags. See FILL-A-BAG page K12
News - Led by its new mayor, Merrickville-Wolford council was sworn in during a ceremony in the council chamber on Monday, Dec. 8. Three new faces – councillors Stephen Ireland, Chuck MacInnis and Shawn Hughes – join four council veterans in Mayor David Nash, councillors Anne Barr Victor Suthren, and David Snowdon. The council chamber was standingroom-only as friends, family and supporters squeezed their way into the room to watch the proceedings. Newly elected and former deputy mayor David Nash said he was looking forward to the upcoming term. “I am looking forward to it,” he said adding that he has not had to deal with the United Counties before but he was expecting the experience to be a good one. He said the new council will be a productive one. “Last term, five of the six councillors were new,” he said. “This time we have the benefit of three coming back.” Upcoming challenges for the small but busy municipality are: economic development, a long-term strategy to deal with recreation and the annual budget. “We are working with the United Counties to create a long-term economic strategy,” said Nash. He said the council would be$setting ELIGIBLE OWNERS T:10.5”

up an economic development committee he hopes would include some public input. First up for the new council is to begin budget deliberations. Last year they managed to balance their budget but this year may be more of a challenge. The council still does not know if they will be a winner or loser when it comes to provincial funding. The mayor said recreation is an area of concern. “Recreation for all ages is very important,” he said. He pointed out the municipality has great walking trails and has upgraded their tennis courts. He mentioned council would investigate a long-term recreation plan for the municipality. On the topic of recreation, council gave a green light to the Merrickville Lions Club’s plan to have pickle ball games in the community centre. The club paid a $500 deposit to cover any concerns about damage to the community hall as a result of their activities. Council also agreed with the cost for the game participants at $1 per person per session. The meeting included the election, by councillors, of a new deputy mayor. Elected for this term is Councillor Anne Barr. The first inaugural meeting, the only council meeting to be held in December will be followed by its second meeting onINMonday, HOLIDAY Jan. 12 at 7 p.m.
