Terry Fox Run set for this Sunday Ashley Kulp

akulp@perfprint.ca

Community – The spirit of Terry Fox’s legacy will shine brightly this Sunday, Sept. 14 in Kemptville for the community’s annual Terry Fox Run. For the past number of years, the run has been organized by Kemptville resident Debbie MacDougall and she noted that this year’s event will once again be held at the former fire hall/armoury on Reuben Crescent. The official start will be at 10 a.m. “There are three different routes this year with 2K, 5K and 10K runs. Maps are available at the registration table,” she noted. “There are other runners who start at 9 a.m. so unofficially, you can start at 9 a.m. if you so choose.” Registration opens at 8 a.m. and prior to the start of the run, participants will be treated to music by Kevin Render. Back again this year to emcee will be

local realtor Harry Pratt. MacDougall said the run is wheelchair accessible and open to those who wish to bike, run, walk or skateboard and refreshments for the event have been generously donated by local businesses in the area. “Last year, the run raised $12,524,” she remarked. Volunteers are always needed to make the event a success and this year is no different. Those interested in lending a hand can contact MacDougall at macdode@ripnet.com, 613-266-2433 or 613-258-9880. Thirty-four years Nationally, 2014 marks the 34th year for the Terry Fox Run, which has become a fall Canadian tradition. According to the Terry Fox Foundation, “in 2013, millions of Ontarians participated in 220 community Terry Fox Runs and 4,000 school events, raising $12.5 mil-

lion for cancer research.” The run is a tribute to Fox and his cross-Canada run, the Marathon of Hope, which began in 1980. After running on his prosthetic leg for 143 days, Fox was forced to stop as the cancer that took his leg had spread to his lungs. He passed away on June 28, 1981 and the first Terry Fox Run took place later that year. “His Marathon of Hope came to an end but the spark he had lit in the hearts and minds of Canadians ignited a cancer crusade that has lasted more than three decades,” the foundation stated. “ Eighty-four cents of every dollar raised through the Terry Fox Run goes to cancer research and to date, the Terry Fox Foundation has brought in more than $650 million for cancer research, worldwide. It supports 1,152 different cancer research projects. For more on the Terry Fox Run, visit www.terryfox.org.

News – Those wavering on whether or not to run in the upcoming municipal election had better make their mind up soon; the deadline to file papers is tomorrow (Friday, Sept. 12). In North Grenville, the positions for one mayor and four councillors are open and many newcomers have thrown their

hats into the ring. Incumbent mayor David Gordon will seek a second term, but will have competition from local resident Bill Forbes. Council will be shaken up as longtime councillor Terry Butler and deputy mayor Ken Finnerty have opted not to run. Current councillors Tim Sutton and Barb Tobin will each seek a third term and joining them are newcomers Elwood Armour, John Barclay, Jim Ber-
