Sports – As a way to cap off a successful baseball season, the Kemptville District Little League (KDLL) took on Municipality of North Grenville staff and council members Aug. 24 at the newly-upgraded diamond 3 in South Gower Park. During a break, three KDLL executive members took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Back row, from left: Dumping the water were Connor O’Callaghan and Brandon MacDonald with KDLL’s all-star junior team, KDLL’s parent advisor director Jeremy MacDonald, and KDLL all-star junior team member Patrick Hamilton. Front row, from left: equipment director Warren O’Callaghan, KDLL president Tim Hamilton and public relations director Mary-Anne Lang. The cause is close to Warren’s heart as a family member passed away from ALS two years ago. For coverage from the game, please see page K14.

News – When walking the new trail in the Ferguson Forest Centre, don’t be surprised if you run into some colourful residents living along the pathway. Kinderwood, which is geared towards three to eight-year-olds, features painted critters throughout that explain a little bit about themselves and their habitat, the forest. “I eat pine nuts, acorns, seeds, fruits, plant shoots, twigs and bark. I use my tail for balance when climbing trees. My large eyes don’t miss a thing,” reads the information card next to a rather happy looking squirrel. “I live in a hollow tree trunk or in a nest in the top branches.” The driving force behind this project is local resident Don Munz, but the whole community has really pitched in to make the vision a reality. “I didn’t want anything imposing or scary on the trail, I wanted something the kids could relate to and enjoy,” said Munz, of why cute critters are scattered along the 500-foot pathway. Included on the pathway are an owl, fox, raccoon, skunk, squirrel, deer, chipmunk and a rabbit. “The idea is to show children,

from three to eight, who are in their early stages what a wonderful opportunity they have to enjoy the forest, virtually in the middle of their town,” said Munz. “It will show them to have respect for the woodland creatures and the forest in general.” The trail is having its grand opening on Aug. 28. The opening will feature a tractor ride, the new trail as well as some food at the gazebo located at the end of the trail. “This project was all basically completed by the two high schools, North Grenville (District High School) and St. Mike’s (St. Michael Catholic High School),” said Munz. “The two shops cut them (the critters) out of plywood, the two art classes painted them and then some volunteers and myself placed them along the way.” Ferguson Forest Centre staff cut the path through the trees while Outer Creations, a local landscaping company, donated the wood chips that are strewn along the path. But, cute critters aside, the forest itself is actually really interesting. It is made of replanted treetops, taken from a forest in Almonte. “These pine trees were producing a tremendous amount of pine cones, so they grafted the trees, created a root See TRAIL page K4
