Council meets in Bishop’s Mills Jeff Mackey jeff.mackey@metroland.com
News – The North Grenville Municipal Council enjoyed a change of scenery on July 7 when they held their committee of the whole meeting at the Bishop’s Mills Community Centre. “We promised residents of North Grenville that through the years we would come out and hold council meetings in their community for the sake of inclusion,” said North Grenville Mayor David Gordon. “Bishop’s Mills is a wonderful place, we love coming here.” The meeting was well attended by the Bishop’s Mills community. The town’s welcome sign was replaced in advance of the meeting; it was allegedly knocked over by a snowplow. “We hold one meeting in Bishop’s Mills or Burritts Rapids once a year and then we go to South Gower and also hold meetings,” Gordon continued. “At a certain point in time people realize that they don’t always want to gravitate towards Kemptville, and needless to say they appreciate it.” While the venue may have shrunk, the council’s agenda did anything but – the 125-page package included everything from a tax rate comparison report, the 2014
operating and capital report, a new lease agreement for the curling club and new communal services system default agreement with Fetherston Mobile Home Trailer Park. The Fetherston mobile home saga looks like it could soon be coming to a conclusion. New water and wastewater treatment equipment should be installed in the fall which will allegedly cover the municipality’s obligations through a memorandum of understanding from an operational standpoint. The issue has been a long haul for the municipality and residents alike. “Absolutely, we are there,” said Brian Carré, Chief Administrative Officer for North Grenville. “The infrastructure still isn’t quite in the ground, but on paper the solution is there.” Also, the new curling club lease means that the icy sport will have a home in North Grenville for the next five years. “The curling club is a success story and moving on I’m sure that there won’t be any problems,” said Gordon. “We have good tenants there, the board of directors are top notch,” said the mayor. “I would love to see them in there for the next 40 years.” Also announced was a public
meeting regarding a new public school on County Road 44 south of the eQuinelle development on July 21 at the North Grenville Municipal Centre, 7 p.m. Kemptville College update A brief update on the Kemptville College was also delivered to council. The municipality is looking at taking over the campus in an interim role while a more permanent solution is found. “As a representative of the municipality, this week I had the chance to investigate the possibility of the municipality running the college on an interim basis,” said Carré. “As far as the municipality is concerned we are not yet at a point where we have clear direction as to how we could proceed with this interim role,” he continued. Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark brought the issue up in question period at Queen’s Park and, now that the election is over, there seems to be some movement on the issue. “We met with a representative of the University of Guelph who listened to the concerns of the municipality and members of the Kemptville College Renewal Task Force to make sure the college continues to move forward.”
