North Grenville Municipality acquires Kemptville Campus at no cost to local taxpayers BY PAULINA HREBACKA

After four long years of negotiations with the province and delayed announcements, the municipality of North Grenville has confirmed its acquisition of a large portion of the former Kemptville College Campus, at no cost to local taxpayers. The offer to purchase the property was agreed to on Dec. 22, 2017. North Grenville council and staff, along with representatives from the French public school board of eastern Ontario, currently functioning on campus, held a news conference on Thursday, March 22 to provide further details on the purchase and share their vision for the future of the campus. “This is an exciting day for North Grenville,” said Mayor David Gordon. “This process started in 2014 and is culminated in today’s news conference. It has been a vision for council to have the ownership of the college lands remain in the municipality.” The renewal of the campus will see an education and community hub operating under the three pillars of education and training, health and wellness, and economic development.

“It’s time to bring back the pride of this 100-year-old facility,” said Brian Carré, chief administrative officer for the municipality. Wednesday, March 28 marked the official transfer of ownership of 633.3 acres of land, including 34 buildings, the agroforestry centre, the trails system, all of the greenhouses, and all of the buildings on campus, including the government offices, such as Service Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNR), and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) to the municipality. According to Carré, the most frequently asked questions over the last two to three years concern the cost to acquire the campus. The property to be purchased was initially appraised at $11 million. In consideration of infrastructure deficits and deferred maintenance on the property, a discount of $3.3 million has been applied, bringing the cost Desmond Devoy/Metroland down to $7.7 million. “As part of the negotiations, the municipality commissioned Novat- The annual Bowl for Kids Sake fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters ech, an engineering firm from Ottawa, of Leeds and Grenville was held at Kemptville Bowling on Saturday, to inspect the property and identify
